After a crushing victory in space, Ghosts of Retribution turn their gaze onto the battlegrounds of Varda - their vassal world. In this session we will try to defeat Iron Monks, however their ground forces, despite losing their space superiority, are still a formidable foe.

Enemy forces:
+7000 troops are in control of Novomark. They have managed to set up AA defences and they are supported by large detachments of heavy armour.
+6000 troops are scattered in Krodian mountains. They have light armour attached, but that shouldn't be a problem. They are having problems with leadership as Kronos and his men managed to decapitate their command structure early in the battle.
+Green Belt is almost entirely under enemy control, their forces there are unknown, but your reports suggest tight cooperation with Iron Monks air force and with their elite machines, such as Penitent Engines.

Special information:
+Orbital bombardment is impossible(analysis was completed last session) due to the damage suffered by Aspera Dominus and because enemy mostly operates in areas where collateral damage would be unavoidable.
+Enemy has taken a significant part of Novomarkian population, including your Planetary Governor Kvei Lohar, as hostages and are holding them in the planetary palace.
+You have support of two Scitarii Cohorts from "Technohammer", a total of 2000 augmented warriors, including heavy machinery, artillery and air support.
+Last thread you successfully deployed first company in Novomark and Krodian mountains.

Okay if I remember correctly Macedon was in place around Novomark's generators, get him to shut them down so we can use the superior senses of Space Marines to attack the enemy in the dark. Our 1st company veterans dropping in the dark should make a beeline for the hostages and free them.

We need a full casualty report from our Captains.

How is Kay and the 7th Company doing? Last I remember they were destroying the Frateris airbase.

In the Krodian mountains, have our men on the ground pour suppressive fire into the enemy whilst we make planetfall. Once we're on the ground Brethorius and his Terminators start smashing vehicles out of whatever cover they may have, forcing them to expose themselves to the guns of Kronos' armour.

20 - 40 = They weren't able to save Lohar, but retreated using underground tunnels
41-50 = Light casualties - d10

91-100 = Almost all died, but some of them were taken as prisoners and forced to release some of the secrets about your forces by intimidating them that civilians will be slaughtered en masse if they refuse.

Would you prefer an immediate destruction of generators or to properly deactivate them? If you will simply deactivate them, enemy forces will be able to use emergency energy reserves for another 48 hours, but on the other hand destroying generators will hamper the recovery of the planet after what you assume to be your inevitable victory. Would you like Macedon himself to lead the taskforce? Please roll d100 for his strategy skill(whether he leads the attack or not, because he's the one planning it), then roll d100 for the leader of the attack and finally pick your maneouvres from the Doctrine page on the wiki to constitute your battle plan.

Kvei Lohar is now being held in a safehouse a dozen miles from the frontlines, where he is now helping you with the recovery and coordination of the civilian population. While the man is shaken, he might be of some use even in his condition - please roll d100.

Under 25 = He will manage to coordinate groups of workers to clear paths from the rubble for your armour to approach the planetary palace. Having armour participate in the siege will grant you bonuses in the assault.

Captain Macedon has learned many things in recent years, but the battle that rages in Novomark is the first time he can really put them to use. He managed to draw out enemy forces out of their base by staging a suprise attack on one of their listening posts out in the suburbs of Novomark, forcing them to mobilise their forces. Macedon drew out about a half of enemy force, close to 4000 troops and about 30 vehicles to chase his already bruised 6th Company. Macedon was trying to use his superior skill at Maneouvres to outsmart enemy Advance and he was largerly successful. Enemy caught up with his company near the crossing over Feiros river, but Macedon managed to use this natural barrier to deny enemy the chance to use his armour and inflicted heavy damage on enemy forces when they tried to cross Feiros.

6th Company suffered 5+d5 casualties and lost a Rhino to an enemy bombardment.

Enemy taskforce lost d3 Immolators, d5 Chimeras and 300+7d100 infantry.

As half of the enemy force was stuck at Feiros, Mercurion and his Veteran guard used this chance to strike at the planetary palace right after sunset. Their tight formation Advanced on the enemy positions in a slow, but methodical manner, burning outposts after outpost, extinguishing machine gun nests and silencing fortifications. Darkness, while already a terrible enemy to the Frateris militiamen, became only worse when marines in a calculated move destroyed main power generators that belonged to their own city. Sudden darkness and terror engulfed enemy positions, chaos and confusion reigned among terrified enemy soldiers. Mercurion, even though just a sergeant, lead his men from the front, carrying a meltagun in one hand and the banner of the 1st Company in the other. In the beginning his brazen attitude attracted attention from all the enemies and sacred flag was torn by dozens of lasbolts, but by the sunrise enemy learned to fear the sight of that ragged banner on the horizon, because wherever it appeared, bastions crumbled, tanks burned and once-zealous Iron Monk brother-officers fled the battlefield. Another hero that everyone will remember from the assault on the Planetary Palace will be another sergeant, named Dragrock, who lead 3rd Squad. A giant man even by Space Marine standards, Dragrock unleashed his simple, but pure fury upon the traitors. He strode amongst the ruins like a titan, with nothing but his personal handforged blade and a chain wrapped around his fist. He charged alone into enemy formations and broke them, forcing as many as three hundred men flee at once from the North-Western Courtyard of the Planetary Palace. At later stages of the battle Dragrock lost his foot to a landmine, but when the first sunrays hit the ruined palace, but that didn't stop him to go out on his bloody stump to hunt enemy stragglers.

I'd just like to verify that Aspera and our Admech allied ship have reported this betrayal (and our Victory in the void) to the following:

Battlefleet Deus (Imperial Navy)
Order of Bloody Tears
Fortress world of Volitair (neighbors and defends the world Dreifus' ships fled toward)
Merchant League (the people that buy Varda's gas)
Prothera (Former home to a number of refugees that settled Varda)
Folkvangr (We're obliged to defend them as per agreement with Kerr)
Tachion Primaris (Especially Sector Gov & Kest)
Templos (We have some favor there, and Merchant League)

That and we should be having our friends everywhere putting out word that Dreifus' ships are traitor vessels, and get the Navy to declare them hunted, hostiles.

We could probably also ask Nestorium to call upon the wider Mechanicus to cease supporting any Iron Monk activities until Dreifus and his ships are brought to justice for their attack upon a friend of Mars and the Mechanicus.

Overall this was a stunning victory, what in the beginning was supposed to be just a rescue operation for the civilians, in the end became a full out assault on the Planetary Palace. Mercurion lead only 50 brothers and some scouts against almost 3000 entrenched enemy soldiers. Your assault left around 700+d20 x 50 of them dead, and the rest fled into the outer suburbs of Novomark to regroup with the main force that was hunting 6th Company. However victory is not without a cost, you've lost d10+1 Veterans and most of the others are heavily wounded. Some tough choices are ahead of you:
+You have liberated about 90 000 people that enemies were keeping as prisoners, probably to bargain with you for a favourable truce. Now those people are free, but unless you protect them, they will fall prey to enemy once more. Also, they need food and shelter. Planetary palace can provide those facilities, but it's an obvious target for enemy counter-attack.
+Are you going to hold the palace? It suffered two sieges in the last two weeks, all of it's outer defences are in rubble, so it will offer very weak defensive bonus and your men are tired/wounded. Mercurion sends you a message:
>Milord, we've won a stunning victory for the glory of the Company tonight, but we request your immediate reinforcements. Planetary Palace is ours once more and it would pain my heart to leave it, but my current force does not have the strength to keep it if enemy employs it's armoured columns to counter-attack. Please send word as soon as possible on whether we should hold or withdraw.

Mountains are not your favourite battlefield, but this time it's not your choice where to meet the enemy. However your impressive strategical insight allowed you to deepstrike your best warriors from the 1st Company, including your Terminators, to the rear of enemy positions. When Chapter Master leads the attack on the enemy, it's like a thunder out of clear sky - unexpected, swift and deadly. Your forces, combined with Kronos' force and his armour, are enough to break enemy resistence within hours. Your combat doctrine, which emphasises tight, strong formations that crush the enemy with superior force, proves to be very well suited to the mountain passes of the Krodian mountain range. Your terminators work together with your marines to simply roll over the enemy lines, killing and maiming everyone in their way. Especially impressive is the performance of the repaired Fortress of Vengeance. Wherever it rolls, rocks crumble and jungle instantly turns into a plain.

did we capture any enemy mortars/artillery/explosive munitions when we routed them from the governor's palace?

I'd like to have our marines use such things to set up the buildings along their likely routes of advance to be demolished onto them, conceal captured flamers/meltas rigged to fire into the street when a wire/string/chord is pulled by a hidden Astartes/militia volunteer, and just general 'fuck you' sabotages involving fire and explosives into their line of advance.

Bonus points for hiding people above the streets and raining delayed-timer detpacks onto advancing columns.

C) withdraw lines and orbital bombardment from one of the 3 ships we have in orbit.
>>

Also, there might be another way...

Plan D) use firepower to collapse valley walls/mountainside onto their position

The fucking orks did it to Void Squad, why can't we do it?

You now control 500 men who are more or less suitable for war. Many of them are Mormarkian veterans, so you have trust in their abilities, but others are green civilian Protherans who are not sure what's the difference between a lasgun and a lascutter. Do you want to name the new regiment?

>Ave Omnisiah, milord. This is Dossar speaking. I am glad to inform you that we have managed to push the enemy by the coastline, we have burned a few of their airfields and destroyed a force of around 1300 troops. Your Captain, name's Kay, joined us recently and we are now pushing together Northwards. We have won this victory, now it's just the time required to get our boots on the ground. Expect Green Belt to be retaken within 72 hours. Yours, Commander Dossar.
>>29202268
Impossible due to the damage you've sustained. If you'd convince "Technohammer" to bombard it for you(if they have the means), it would still be highly problematic because of the electromagnetic storms that form in the Krodian mountains. unless your troops withdraw a couple of dozen miles, they'll risk getting hit.

>Am I ordered to hold this position, sir?
>>29202319
That would be possible, however as this is a whole valley, not just a narrow ravine, you'll have to send engineers to actually evaluate the rock formations. What you will be looking at is not just knocking down a few stones, but actually bringing down a whole mountain, or a few. Either way, you'll have to roll for the lesser (A) casualties because of the battle you've suffered before you cornered them.

"Make no mistake, that further resistance will mean death, whether by our armored fists, bolters, cannons, or the very mountains you are trapped in, each and every last one of you will eventually die here, you have made Varda a death trap for yourselves, an enemy that you cannot defeat or flee from, this is your last chance before in the name of the Emperor we purge your mortal beings from this planet, give up your arms, denounce your leaders, and come back into the Emperor's fold."

For good RP, I will ignore the roll. You receive a reply:
>Greetings, Astartes. My name is Captain-Bishop Kalor, I am the highest surviving officer of the Ferum Frateris Militiae on this planet. If you are willing, we are ready to negotiate as our lord is unable to save us. However we have killed many of you and we will kill many more if you will force us to. All we want is to leave this planet. If you can assist us in that, this war will end tomorrow.

>Mercurion to fortify position

"Negative. You are to trap the enemy's line of advance to your position, give the appearance of a hastily fortified position, and vacate the position once they reach the first of your traps. Buy time for the civilians to escape the enemy if you must, but rely upon traps and timed demolitions to slow them. The civilians are to travel light and make use of whatever vehicles can be put to our service as transports. Boobytrap any supplies that are left behind. It is time to embrace the tactics of Corax."

"You come under the guise of friendship, betray us, and expect to simply be allowed to leave? Captain-Bishop Kalor, Dreifus has abandoned you. "How far are you willing to go for your men, Bishop Kalor, I cannot promise you a ship and a warm bed back to your own world after what you have wrought upon our worlds and people, but I can guarantee you your life and the lives of your men if you organize a ceasefire, and ensure no man, space marine, or Iron Monk shall die again this day."

>I hope you understand, that it was neither my order, nor my design to do what has been done. I am a priest and a soldier, so I must do my duty with double the zeal and twice less questions than either one of those two individually. I follow my Lord, Astrobelus Kest, and my life is tied to his Church and to the service to the Iron Order. I do what I am told to do, no matter the risks and no matter the consequences. Dreifus requisitioned us and thus I follow his orders in this holy war. To be honest, the only reasons I am speaking with you and not fighting to the drop of blood is because my men have seeds of doubt in their hearts. I am not a Cardinal, I cannot judge whether you are heretics or not, but your messages put a different perspective on the situation. I am a son of the Imperium and I will not see this force surrender, the only thing I can offer is a truce until this matter is resolved and we will either continue to wage war if you are heretics or we will shake hands and be brothers under Aquila once more. What shall you say?

>I understand. My men will surrender in an hour. Ave Imperator.
Once communications cease, your scouts report movement in the camp. Apparently enemies have split themselves into two groups, small one of around 100 men and big one with the rest of almost 4000 men. Scouts are not sure, but it appears, that the bigger group is disarming themselves, by pilling weapons into pits and setting them afire, they are also sabotaging their vehicles. However the other, smaller group, turns towards your positons and starts marching up the mountain. As they are approaching, you notice that they are all in their finest uniforms, marching shoulder to shoulder like soldiers of Vostroyan regiments did in times long past. Your scouts are unable to understan why would they make themselves into such an easy target and why are they singing while they are marching, there's no stealth or tactics in their approach. The bastards are openly marching on your position. Scouts ask for permission to open fire.

Scouts with non-bolter weapons are to take non-lethal shots against enemy legs. Withdraw if the enemy closes to range.

Move 2 Tactical Squads to the Scouts position, have them take as many of the enemy alive.

They will not be granted an honorable death, knock them unconscious and take them prisoner.

As the officers do not stand down and keep marching to the drum straight into your machine guns, you are forced to take action - your scouts open fire on the enemy, trying to take non-lethal shots. While it is a sound plan, it doesn't work against enemy who does not want to be taken alive. Two Commisar-like Priests follow the formation, giving last rites to those unable to carry on and administering Emperor's Mercy. One of the scouts tries to stop this by shooting one of the priests, but as soon as the old man hits the ground, one of the officers picks up his Aquilla staff and his encrusted laspistol and continues the duty of the priest. This continues until the formation reaches the distance where they shout their battlecry "DEUS IMPERATOR VULT!" and charge at your lines in silence. While their bayonets are a small danger to power-armoured brothers, they still pose a threat and in the end none of them survive. When you descend to take a look at the battlefield yourself, you soon find Kalor, lying on the ground with a strange smile on his face. He seems to be proud, probably because unlike others, he took Emperors Mercy himself. Trianon raises his arm into the air for a moment and says:
>The aura of their death is unusually calm for a mass suicide. They must have been happy to do it. Fanatics? Maybe. But I would like to have a death as meaningful to me as the one they had for themselves.

Within an hour representative of the rest of the Frateris militiamen comes to you with a white flag. He is in a rugged uniform, clearly a grunt. He hands you the document, stating that they surrender as individual persons, because they were released from their duty by Bishop-Captain Kalor before he ordered his one last charge.

While to certain extent your anger at people who betrayed you and killed innocents is justified, by the end of this battle you learned many things from them. Dishonored corpses of men who thought that they serve the Emperor bear witness to the increasing brutality and cold-heartedness of the Ghosts of Retribution. But who knows, maybe that is something what we need these days to survive?

Either way, Khorne smiles upon your actions.
