"Pull back, Hippo! You're exposed!" You listen to the chatter between Duck, Hippo and Turtles teams as they struggle to fight off Kay's attempt to take your teams' flag tank out and win the game. "Covering you!" Noriko shouts before talking to her gunner, Akebi. "I don't care if you don't have a clear shot! Keep their heads down!"

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack" and the fight against Saunder's University Highschool and it's tank commander Kay have taken a bit of a... chaotic term. Currently half your remaining team is fighting a losing defensive battles against what appears to be what's left of Kay's tank force.

And you and Miho are racing back across rather rough and bumpy terrain at speeds would would probably be considered hazardous under any other situation. You brace yourself across the top of Black Jack, urging the tank to go faster- the StuG and Excelsior, while well-armored and suitable for a defensive hold, wouldn't last forever.

You unfold the map in your lap, looking for roads, trails, anything that'd let you move a bit faster. "Anyone see their flag tank?" You call in the radio, tracing your finger over the map. "There! Richard, follow this creek up... two miles up there's a fire trail- we can follow it right to them!"

Richard slips down into the creekbed- wider and less choked with bushes and weeds you feel Black Jack move a bit quicker. "No sign of the- wait, that Sherman up there, the one that's been-" Noriko starts. "What's the M4A1 look like that's different from the rest of them?"

"M4A1's got a cast-armor frontal hull, instead of a flat-welded one!" Miho volunteers- you aren't sure whether she just knew it or Yukari gave her the information.

"Yep! That's their flag tank!" She says, suddenly a bit more excited. "She's been up and down at hill for ten minutes taking potshots at us!"

IIRC.....the writefags all waited until planefag had finished for the night before they started up.

And then they took turns, one would do his writing and then the next.

Very orderly.

But Planefag also posted at 10x the speed of Blackjack

I miss planefag.

I miss SWQ

I miss our P-61 Black Widow.
>>
>>29162311
iIf memory serves, the writefaggotry that SWQ spawned was handled as it is here, in-thread.
>>
>>29162311
SWQ original recipe didn't have much of the type we're seeing in GuPQ that wasn't fapfic.

The serious writefagging stayed outside of it or at the end of threads, And was pretty much always done with a lot of consultation with Deme or whoever's spinoff they were writing in.

None of this off-the-cuff "I have great Idea, will write regardless of appropriateness" stuff that people are vomiting out in GuPQ threads these days.

Alright, proposal. Those who are posting the "serious writefagging" such as Anchovy, The Way and myself, and who can wait for end thread, keep posting at the end of the thread.

Those who can't wait for the end of the thread post their stuff in a pastebin or something similar. Easy solution.

>>
>>29162556
And that compound word is used as the specific word for 'tank'.

That's how German works.
>>
>>29162560
having people post at the end of the threads bothers me because of timezones, I'm already two hours ahead of BJ, I imagine there are others farther ahead (or even behind).
>>
>>29162595
I was pointing out the construction of said compund word and how the literal translation occurs.
>>
>>29162602

>>
>>29162631

>>
>>29162646
Yes.
>>
>>29162629
Yeah, and? The only translation that matters is what the word ultimately means.
>>
>>29162491

Okay, this I can work with.

Who are they?
>>
>>29162662
>>29162642

Then they can write them then and post the links in the next thread.

Or whatever.
>>
With regards to in-thread non-quest writefaggotry, I see no reason not to simply post as-is. BJ has a long time between updates, so we need something to keep us occupied, and we NEVER hit autosage unless there's something REALLY interesting to talk about, but that only happens after the quest segment is over.
>>
>>29162642
We usually don't reach autosage, and even when we do its already late in the thread. Often, the thread is still around in the morning.

Yeah, some people still can't post at that time, but there's nothing stopping them from using a pastebin.

I have nothing against the writefagging and I do enjoy it, but I don't like the way it clutters the thread.
>>
>>29162758
And it's a mess between updates, especially since there's nowhere near the level of coordination and communication the old SWQ writefags had.

End of the thread or nothing.
>>
>>29162792

But I DID that with my last story and the thread 404'd immediately afterwards. No-one read it, and I had to repost it in the next thread.
>>
>>29162853

Implying that most people don't read threads after they missed the thing by using the archives.
>>
>>29162853
So repost it. It's not like most of the readerbase doesn't just read the thing in the archives anyway.

"Alright... Which hill is it on?" You ask, looking down at your map- you're still three hills away from them at this point, but if you can get an idea of where that tank is, you can be ready to set up and take a shot at it ASAP.

"It's across from us!" Noriko calls out. "Hold on- keep that supressing fire going- our barrels not melting yet!" She takes another moment to direct her crew. "Directly across from our position- to the North- I don't know the grid..." She's gone for another second, ordering her driver to back them up a few yards to keep them covered. "There's a... a big bald tree! Top third is dead!"

"Negative- we don't have line of sight yet!" You reply. But her description was still helpful- you've got a landmark to aim for now. "Keep tight, keep safe and keep giving them hell!"

You're filled with a supreme feeling of helplessness- you've got the big gun to finish this fight, but you're out of position. Frustration wells up in you.

You pop the hatch and go up for some air. "Miho?" You ask, over the A-Set.

"Russells?" She mirrors. "What did you need?" She sounds distracted, and rightly so- Miho isn't exactly one to be flustered by things going awry, but this certainly isn't how you saw the fight being finished this morning.

"Why don't you split off and go ahead?" You say grimly. "They need every gun they can get right now, not ten minutes from now." Black Jack was too slow, right now, and Miho staying back to support you was keeping her just as slow. "You can get up there a lost faster than me, maybe knock a few of them out in the surprise."

Miho looks up from her map- folded up in front of her on top of the turret. "If they leave an ambush or anything for you-"

"-We'll handle it, Miho. Hippo and Duck need you a lot more than I- we do." Besides, you're pretty sure they've got everything they have leveled against the flag- which doesn't leave a lot to ambush you.

"Alright." Miho says, nodding at you before she ducks into the turret, the Panzer IV immediately revs and steams around Jack, continuing up the creek before turning onto the same fire road you'll be using. "Russells? Just remember we're going to need you to finish this, so hurry up!"

As if on que, Caesar reports over the radio. "We're out of ammo! We need to pull back and re-arm!" The StuG carried most of it's ammo stores ready to fire, but reserves were in boxes below the loader's seat.

"Pull back, StuG! We'll cover you!" Noriko chimes in, but a moment later disaster strikes. "We're hit! Hard!" There's frenzied coughing and, looking down at your loader you see him bristle with worry. "We're fine... I think- I think we're out though. We got one before they got us!"

Although the battle described actually took place. It was a precursor to the Battle of Raseinai, and a lone KV-2 did legitimately halt an entire Panzergruppe for an entire day.

I merely took some liberties, like all writers.
>>
"Anzu!" You shout into the radio. "You need to get clear- it isn't going to take them long to realise the StuG isn't shooting." You say- it's looking damned grim right now- you didn't want to go home without a single win and you still don't intend on it now.

"Yeah, we pulled out three minutes ago." Anzu replies, sounding bored and annoyed at the question. "What's your position?" She says.

"Still coming up the fire-road at H-5." You reply, annoyed with Anzu's attitude towards the fact that the team had no officially fallen behind.

"Yeah... Okay... Thank's Momo." She sresponds to something. "Alright, Miho, where are you?"

"Further up the same road... I-4." Miho says. "...Anzu, how many of them are following you?" You hear a crack over the radio and Hippo's StuG radios that they're hit. "Well... all of them, now."

"Anzu! can you get them into the valley down below us?" Miho says and you see exactly what's happening- the entire column of tanks follows her out and it's just one big turkey shoot. You could kiss Miho right now, but she wouldn't need the distraction.

"I can try." Anzu responds as though there was absolutely nothing wrong with five tanks taking after her. "Not gonna last long on open ground- you guys will have to work fast."

The valley below is more of a shallow canyon- thick treelines broken up by golden fields with a relatively open, flat bottom. It doesn't take fast for the little Pz.38(t) to fly out from cover, it's 37mm firing wildly behind it. About two seconds later the first Saunders tank breaks the tree line.

In a column ambush, taking out the lead tank halts the advance, taking out the trailing tank halts the retreat.
Stopping them going after the 38 is the primary objective, setting up the killzone is secondary, so we put the big gun on the lead tank.
>>
>>29166049
This.
>"OPEN FIRE!"

There are five tanks coming after our flag. If they hit it, we lose. We need to prevent that from happening, since we can't guarantee that we'll take theirs out first

Oh. I assumed you were trying to go for maximizing the effect of the sychronized shot by simultaneuosly cutting off both the advance and the retreat.
But if disuading the chasing enemy is the priority in this instance, then I suppose I have no problem with that.
>>
>>29166151
We want to do that, but Hana is not as accurate as Rose, and a failed kill on the lead tank is more hazardous to our team than a failed kill on the trail tank.

"Wait for it..." You say, as another Saunders tank bursts from the forest below, intent on pouncing on little Pz. 38(t). "Range... Three-hundred. Wait for it..."

Another Saunders tank bursts from the woods- The last Easy-8, firing a shot at the fleeing Turtle Team. And finally, with its sloped, rounded armor and firing wildly out at the Pz. 38(t)- the M4A1 Flag tank. "There's the flag!" You call, excitedly, turning the turret to track the tank- You barely notice the last Sherman, follow it out, limping along on a damaged track. "Miho... Have Hana knock out the first tank in the line..."

"Got it!" Miho shouts from the Panzer IV- a few seconds later you hear her shout. "Firing!" and a 75mm shell arcs out from a point ahead of you on the road towards the Sherman, expertly catching it broadside with the inertia of the shell causing the tank to turn the side- the Easy 8 slams right into it.

And that's exactly what you were going for- a small traffic jam forms with the flag tank being forced to nearly come to a halt. "Target: Sherman flag tank. Range 290!" You say, bringing the turret onto it. "On target!"

"Firing." Rose says as though it were any other shot of the game. Black Jack rocks backwards under the weight of the burst of propellent and explosives. "Hit." Rose reports simply.

Awww, you guys really do care. Okay, here we go.

Bovington tank Museum, United Kingdom
2010

"So, what's your story?"

The tank lifted his awareness. There was a new arrival in the museum, a Grant, and it was looking at him. "Never seen a tank like you before."

"That's because there aren't any like me." The other tank said. "I'm a Black Prince. Mk IV Churchill with a 17 pound gun. Experimental design."

"Ooh, fancy!" Replied the Grant, though the other tank could sense the sarcasm. "That your name, Black Prince?"

"No," replied the tank. "My name is older than the gun. It's Oswald."

"Oswald? What kind of a name is Oswald?" The Grant was incredulous.

"Okay..." Oswald relaxed and cast his mind back. "A long time ago, I was in Africa. Me and five other Churchills-"

"Hold on," Interrupted the Grant. "You said there was no one like you!"

"No one like me, NOW, yes." Replied Oswald calmly. "Back then I was just a Mk III. Riveted turret, 6 pound gun. Now, there were six of us. We were supporting a light armored division, and over the dunes comes this big Jerry tank. A Tiger."

"A TIGER?!" scoffed the Grant. "I bet. How many of you did he kill before you got him?"

"None."

"Bull." Said the Grant. "You can't kill a Tiger with one shot from a 6-pound gun."

"I popped a round into his turret ring and the crew bailed out." Oswald retorted. The Grant scoffed again.

"Son, have you ever fought a Tiger?"

"Well, no, but-"

"Then shut up and let me finish." Oswald cut off the Grant forcefully. For the first time, the lend-lease tank fell silent.

"Right. That was when the Commander decided I needed a name. Called me 'Little Oswald'. When the crew asked him why, he just smiled. I never got a reason for the name, but it stuck. So that's why I'm Oswald. NOT...the Black Prince."

The Grant was silent for a while. "...So how'd you get the big gun?'

Oswald sighed. "I was part of the 7th Armored. We got sent in to disloge the Huns after they dug in around the center of the city. Trouble was, by devoting their reinforcements to Caen, they left the line open elsewhere, so while me and the 7th held 'em down in the city, the rest of the invasion force circled around 'em and-"

"Yeahyeahyeah, I know how that went." The Grant interrupted, yet again. "What did YOU do?"

"Look, mate, I'm telling you the story. Now are you gonna interrupt me constantly, or are you gonna bloody listen?"

The Grant was silent now, seeming to get the point.

"I was part of two big operations. First, there was operation Perch. We were supposed to take Hill 112, near Evrecy. We pulled it off, but most of the other groups failed their objectives so we got ordered to move ahead again, into Villiers-Bocage. But that didn't work at all-we got stuck in there for two days...so we got pulled back." Oswald didn't go any further.

The Grant seemed to understand. "What happened then?"

"Then, there was operation Goodwood. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what we were trying to do, besides 'smash the Jerries'. I guess Monty just thought that...if he threw enough men and tanks at the problem...it'd go away."

"...And did it work?"

"Oh, yes." Oswald sighed. "We lost almost a quarter of our tanks and thirty-five hundred men, but...it worked."

The Grant was silent for a long time now. "So, then...What about that 17-pound gun? How'd you get that?"

Oswald brightened at the change of subject. "Well, I got picked up for weapons testing. 7th was cycling out their armor, and they needed a tank for an experimental upgrade. I got selected, got a ticket home, got this choice new turret. Never got a chance to use it, though...war ended first."

"Aww."

"Yeah, I know." Oswald sighed again. "I know. To be honest, I'm happy I never needed to use the bloody thing. I mean sure, I've given my licks out on the field, but it was a WAR, mate. Good men died. And every day it went on, more of them died. Sure, it might rob me of a chance at glory, but I wouldn't trade that for anything."

"Hear, hear." A solemn silence passed over the two tanks.

Suddenly, Oswald's attention was drawn to the museum's curator, who was following a short girl in a red outfit, flanked by two much larger men. She marched up the aisle, stopped in fronf of Oswald and pointed at him. "That one. He's perfect."

"What?" Said the curator. "But, Miss-"

"No 'buts', Mr. Pennyworth." Replied the girl in what Oswald recognized as refined, but learned, English-it wasn't her native tongue. "You said, 'Just walk in and pick any tank you like.' and I have walked in, and I have picked this tank. Now are you going to be rude, or are you going to grant this lady her wish?"

Mr. Pennyworth fell silent, and the girl-whom Oswald now recognized as Japanese-looked back at the big tank. "Yes, indeed." She said, now in her own language. "You'll make a fine Sensha-do panzer."

SENSHA-DO. Oswald had heard the word before. Like war games, but for kids. All the battle with none of the bloodshed. He didn't understand most of what was going on, but he knew one thing: He'd finally get to use his big new gun.

"This should be good."

>and so a veteran tank gets brought back into service. in all honesty this is probably one of my weaker writings. thoughts?

For what it's worth, I enjoyed it. Only thing is, 7th didn't have any Churchills, these served in independent Infantry Tank Brigades. Still, I'm quite certain that the 7th did have support of Churchills at one time or another (AVRE's if nothing else...)

I am 99.99% certain that each of the six Black Princes were built from scratch, given that they were wider, longer and had a completely different shape at the front to regular Churchills. Plus if anything they'd have been modified Mk.VIIs, not Mk.IVs.

Also the curator of Bovington would most likely rather shoot himself than give up any of the one-of-a-kind tanks in the musuem's collection, ESPECIALLY one that has had a lot of time, effort and money spent on it to restore it to running condition.

Other than that it was fine.

Tanks talking to each other weirds me out in all sorts of ways. Seems kinda forced. How would tanks talk to each other, what would be their mannerisms, interaction, body language, etc? It's all so foreign! I'll never write a tankspective.

Good read though.

has the right idea, one of my dreams if I ever win the lottery is to go to one of the US armor museums or maybe Bovington and try and buy some WW2 armor and restore it to factory-fresh (or better, if its something like a Tiger/KT, I'd try and improve the running gear) condition.
>>
>>29171115
If I were him it'd have to be a heck of a lot of zeroes. I'm not sure even nine would convince me to let go of a (running!) Black Prince.
>>
>>29171469
I'd be glad to let it fight in senshado if I were him, I don't like the idea of planes/tanks/etc sitting static and gathering dust.
>>
>>29170953
>I am 99.99% certain that each of the six Black Princes were built from scratch
Yep. They're A43, Churchills are A22.

>Also the curator of Bovington would most likely rather shoot himself than give up any of the one-of-a-kind tanks in the musuem's collection, ESPECIALLY one that has had a lot of time, effort and money spent on it to restore it to running condition.
Well, I imagine it would be more like leasing the tank to Gloriana and letting them use it in Senshado for advertising and publicity purposes, complete with the huge list of indemnity forms about condition on return.
