>It's a small world after all

You regain consciousness in a rocky valley. All around there is nothing but hard packed soil, and pebbles as far as the eyes can see. The horizon seems nearly nonexistent. Above you is a black sky, devoid of stars, moons, or features of any kind. When you kick up dirt, small clouds rise and fall. Overall, it is a dreary, dull place. You try to walk forward, judging forward arbitrarily as the direction you were facing when you first awoke. The featureless land yields no other details, no matter how far you walk, or how high you jump to better your vantage. It simply exists. You sit down, cross legged, and think of what might make this place more interesting, at least for a moment.

The earth beneath you begins to shake. From the flat and boring ruck emerges a single pillar of stone, stretching high into the air. More begin to emerge as well, all around you, and one beneath you. Yours rises highest of all, looking down on a deserted sea of stone platforms. You are able to jump from one to the next, freely bouncing about like a goat on the crags at the temple. This place has livened up considerably. But it still needs something. You look up to the blank sky, and think.

A) Some light
B) Some detail
C) Something relaxing
D) Something to fun

Clouds roll in from the horizon, fast at first, but slowly as they begin to cover the sky. They are large and fluffy, and shift shapes constantly. Some of them come in surprisingly low, and you can almost touch the,. You leap to a higher pillar, and find that the clouds are nearly solid. You touch one, and you are able to push it away. You cautiously try to put your foot on another, and sure enough you can even stand on it. You gleefully hop from cloud to cloud, ascending higher in the air, until suddenly an orange light emerges on the horizon. You stop and stare as a beautiful sunrise comes up, illuminating everything around you. Like the clouds, it travels shockingly fast, and stop before reaching noon position. The world around you is now much cheerier. It seems you have some amount of say in it's shape as well.

Try to make a grand tower out of stone.
>>
>>29150247
>>29150278
A great stretch of land clears, reabsorbing the stone pillars and then stirring itself up. Then, a magnificent edifice of stone begins to rise from the flat rock. It's top is a flat, circular platform, and as the tower rises, windows and staircases come into view. The detail on the outer walls include ornate carvings of spiders, lions, and monkeys as well. You leap over to the tower, even as it is still rising, and climb to the top. There, you ride out the remainder of the tower's construction, until it stops, high above any of the clouds you called forth. The height affords you a view of everything around you. You take a deep breath, and savor it.

"It's not much, but I suppose it makes for a good start."

A voice sounds from behind you. You turn to see where it came from. There stands a small girl. She is quite short, and has unusual white hair. She wears a white robe, stuffed and folded to the point where you can't even begin to make out her actual body shape, other than her small hands, which hold a large pearl in front of her. She looks at you with a smug smile.

"It's not a real place, if that's what you mean. It's only here because you had nowhere else to go. It's your realm. We all have one. You can turn it onto anything you like, whatever makes you happy. Only you can do it too. We've tried to change each others, it doesn't ever work, even for the older people."

You ask who she is.

"I'm Lunara, I think. Nobody calls me by my name anymore. Mostly they call me Moonchilde. I don't like it very much but they wouldn't stop even if I asked them. I'm sure you might have heard of me. Your grandfather used to ask me for things, like calm seas, but your father and you never really did. Anyway, how are you liking this place?"

"I can't see why you'd want to go back. The mortal world is so unhappy. But I suppose it isn't my right to forbid you. I should ask you though, do you want things to go back to how they were? Do you really want to give up all the power you have here? If you went back as you were, you'd probably only get eaten again. You were eaten, by the way. The big tiger chewed your body up and swallowed you, so there's no much a body to go back to. Are you okay with that?"

"You could, certainly. You can do most things if you really want to. If you really want to go back with your power though, you'll have to accept your fate. Can you do that, even after all the times you denied what you knew you were becoming?"

You tell her that you will accept. She smiles. She tells you that leaving your own realm is simple. All you have to do is walk out.

"My realm touches yours, so feel free to visit whenever you like."

She begins to fade away, much like a mirage, wavering and evaporating until there's nothing there. You look around you for an exit, but you don't see anything resembling one. You think for a moment, then decide to simply make one. You reach out and grasp a doorknob. The door it connects to is made of thick wood, dull and undecorated. There is no frame and no hinges, but when you tug, it swings open all the same.

You emerge in the cavern where you fought the Beast King. Your clothes are no longer those you perished in, but yellow and red robes and leather boots. Your arms are guarded by hide and fur bracers. On your head is a gold circlet, very similar to the one you saw on your first day in the temple. Your injuries are completely gone. You stand on the balcony from which he entered, and stare down into the pit that held your fight. You can't tell how long it's been since you were beaten, but he still seems to be licking his chops, confidently. He roars, and brags about his uncontested domain over the land. When you turn around, the door you came in through is gone.

You leap over the stone rails and land in front of him. He looks up at you, first in confusion, then in disbelief. You ask him if he'll be finished with his monologue anytime soon. His face turns suddenly into one of anger, and he raises his massive paw to swipe at you again. You leap and evade the attack, landing on the other side. He swipes again, and you continue to dodge. You think that fighting him here is still fighting on his terms, but letting him loose elsewhere, though likely a great boon to you, might put others in danger.

You decide that, as difficult as it will be, you have to contain him here. Eh continues to try and smash you against the walls and floor with his massive paws, and you evade by a hair every single time. Eventually you come to the conclusion that you simply lack the reach to strike him while also avoiding his attacks. After sliding under one of his paws, you shove your hand into the stone floor and grab hold of it. You pull your hand back up, bringing with it a stone rod, about 5 feet long, and dense as an anvil. You leap over another paw, and twirl the stone staff around your body. It is conveniently light and easy to wield, whether it be from your power over the mountain or your sheer strength. At any rate, you now have a viable weapon to turn the tables of this fight.

The Beast King roars again. You are growing tired of his foul stench. He demands to know how you survived being swallowed whole.

As his jaws surround you and begin to close, you duck down and hold out your staff. The stone staff catches his jaws, and prevents the Beast King from closing them around you. You hold on tight as he lifts you into the air, trying to shake you so that you will lose your grip and tumble back down into his gullet. You hold tight, but soon feel yourself slipping, Out of options, you turn the staff away, and point it down his throat. The staff extends far beyond it's normal reach, and hits his uvula, causing him to gag and cough you back up. You hit the ground and roll, narrowly avoiding a blob of phlegm. As you rise up, you use your power to extend the height of the chamber as fast as he can drive you upward. Soon however, you realize that his extended height is much taller than you suspected. He goes from being totally prone to standing on all fours, and then standing on his hind legs. Without any time to think of a new plan, you find yourself pushing out of the side of the mountain entirely, and into the morning sunlight. He growls, blinded by the sudden brightness, and you don't fare very well either. Dazed, you try to whack him with your stone staff to drive him back into the ground, but he reaches out and gets a foothold on the side of the tunnel you just made. He begins to drag his body out of the tunnel, even as you mercilessly wail on his neck. By the time he has emerged completely, you've bloodied him, and are breathing heavily from the strain. You descend upon him, smashing into his throat with your staff in an attempt to keep him from getting up. Now, in the open air, you can maneuver much easier. This new freedom allows you to strike him without any worries about the space you have to get around in. You strength alone does not appear to be enough to pin him, however, as between staff strikes he slowly manages to put his feet beneath him and come to a crawling position. You come down on top of his head, and jam your staff into his burned eye, but although that brings him to a cry of pain, it does not stop him from making his way to the other side of the mountain.

As you try to slow his advance, you see a beam of light penetrate his skin, emerging from his arm and flying off like a bolt of lightning. You peer over his shoulder, and look down at the ground. There you see your comrades, attempting to harm him as best they can. Leman appears to be hurling bolt of light at him, and Vicart is making wild gestures that ignite and burn part of the Beast King's fur. Though they hurt him, as evidenced by his growls of pain, they do not slow him down any more than your own attacks.

You shout at Leman and Vicart to keep casting their spells, as you hop down to the ground and begin assaulting the Beast King's legs, in an attempt to rob him of his mobility. Your first few strikes land, and on the fourth and fifth strike you think you can head something begin to crack. This doesn't last long though, as he realizes that without you on his back, he has free movement. He bends his legs, and begins pouncing instead of running. Vicart and Leman continue to lob magic at him, but he is soon well out of their effective range. You tell them to get back to town as soon as they can, and to take care of Ai, as you dive into the side of the mountain and try to cut of the Beast King. The earth stands aside as you run, and pushes you forward at a much greater speed than you could normally move at. When you emerge again, you launch yourself from the side of the mountain and at the Beast King, latching onto his fur just above his ankle. In only a few minutes, the town at the base of the mountain comes into view, and you are nearly out of time to stop him. You rack your brain for a new pan, but the panic and stress block your train of thought. The Beast King roars as he descends upon the town, licking his lips. The anger and helplessness eat at you, and you ask yourself why he is so bent on destroying the town instead of fighting you.

Then you realize his plan. He wants to wipe out your followers. You climb up his back, and summoning all the strength you have, you slam your stone staff down onto his forehead. Your staff cracks in half, but he falls to the ground, and begins sliding to a stop. You leap off and head for the town as fast as you can, commanding the earth beneath you to speed your movement. When you reach the town, you see the people gathered outside, frightened and panicking as the Beast King gets back to his feet.

You regain awareness in a familiar place. You find yourself on your back, on something cold and hard, staring up at blue sky full of soft, white clouds. Your back aches, and your head is fuzzy. You sit up, and look around. You are at the top of your tower again, situated at the center of your realms. The stone pillar below have started to crumble, and even the platform that serves as the top of your stone tower seems to be cracking, as though someone had take hammers to it. You ask what happened, and how you got back here. They explain that when you tried to roll beneath the Beast King, he squashed you under his own weight. The man in green laughs, "He basically just sat on you, and you died. I've never seen someone go out like that, and I've been around for 4,000 years. I'm the Huntsman, by the way. I'm one of the old gods. I tell you though, in all my time I've never seen one of us willingly weaken himself like that. I have to assume you were just being over confident, because otherwise it would just be hilarious."

You ask them for advice, but they seem much more content to watch you try to succeed on your own. You decide that they'll be of no help at all, and that you need to get back quickly.

The problem was we told them to run shaking their belief, not that we didn't act enough or didn't convince them. If we tell them to go back to worshipping us and then teleport to the Beast King we should get our powers back.

You return to the mortal realm in the midst of panic and chaos, as the townsfolk flee their home in a desperate attempt at survival. In the distance, the Beast King gets to his feet and begins checking beneath him for what you're should have been your remains, were you mortal. The townsfolk stop when they see you, and stop. Many of them seem on the verge of bolting, but you have their attention for a moment.

You raise your hands to still them, and speak softly. You tell them that only they're faith and fidelity can defeat the Beast King now, and they if they flee now, they will only doom themselves. They seem confused, likely because of your conflicting words, but soon some of them drop their things and kneel. Already you can feel your power growing again. You open a door again, and reopen it above the Beast King as he begins to head toward the town again. You fall on him with all your weight, driving your boot into the back of his neck, helped by Burning Heart. The blow staggers him for a moment. When this happens, you can feel your power growing again. You leap down and raise the earth beneath the Beast King, hitting him in his throat with pillars of stone, and knocking him off balance by sliding the ground beneath his feet. Again your power grows. You feel stronger than before, even. The Beast King gets up and roars, "You live again? Why won't you stay dead, and accept my reign! It is your fate to lose to me, Mountain God!"

You raise a shaft of stone beneath your feet, launching you high into the air. The Beast King seems surprised by your sudden surge of strength, and does not attempt to respond as you fall, elbow first, into his forehead. Just before impact, you ignite your body with Burning Heart, and when you collide with him a wave of wild flame bursts out from the point of impact. The Beast King is driven down into the floor, groaning in pain. You land in front of his nose, still feeling your strength increase as the townsfolk more fervently believe in your ability to succeed.

You take a half step backward to build momentum, and then strike the tip of his nose with your right palm, igniting Burning Heart upon impact. The sound this makes can only be described as thunderous, and the effects speak for themselves. The Beast King is thrust backward, sliding along the ground and flattening everything he runs over. He moves a good few hundred yards, and at the end of the slide his nose is still smouldering. You run in to follow up the attack.

The Beast King tries to get back to his feet, as you call to you a series of massive boulders from the mountain. While you run, the boulders catch up to you and begin to stack together. They compound on your arm, forming a rather comical stone arm and fist, with several cracks and fissures running it's length. The Beast King no longer looks at you with smugness, or contempt, but with genuine fear as you launch yourself into the air again. You draw your arm back, and swing it, smashing it into the side of his head. Burning Heart ignites, and an explosion powerful enough to send you flying backward into the town results. The Beast King falls onto his side. You approach him, slowly now. He does not move, but you can see his chest rising and falling as he breathes. You arrive at his head, staring into the smoking crater of his right eye.

With a motion of your hand, the great tract of land beneath the Beast King crumbles beneath him. He tumbles downward, kicking up a cloud of dust as he hits the bottom of a deep gorge. You slide him beneath the mountain as easily as one would slide a drawer back into a cupboard, and seal the earth again. You hear cheering from the townsfolk, as they rush over to greet you. You are hoisted into the air, and lifted on their shoulders. They praise and ask for blessing. They beg for you to accept various offerings. You tell them that as flattered as you are, time would be better spent finding your friends and making sure they returned home safely.

One great tunnel later, you emerge on the other side of the mountain, and meet your comrades as they walk back to the other side of the mountain. Ai runs to embrace you, as Leman and Vicart make a loud commotion, asking what happened. You tell them exactly how the battle unfolded, and they are awestruck. After a short rest and catching up, you ask how Vicart and Leman plan to get home. Vicart explains that his teleportation spell takes several days of preparation, and that they'll likely need to find a place to stay in the meantime.

After dropping Leman and Vicart off at the edge of the town, where they are lifted up and carted off as heroes, you return to the temple with Ai, and the spider. The bird, seeing his opportunity, elected to stay in town to host Leman and Vicart. Later, as the spider heads off to gather meat, the two of you head to your cell to bond. When Ai presses herself against you beneath the blankets, you hear a strange voice come from somewhere in the room.

"I love you."

You search for the source, but unable to find anything that may have made the noise, you settle on Ai, asking her if she had just spoken. She shakes her head, but you hear another word, "No" when she does. Utterly confused, you tell her to think of your name. "Ross".

It seems that somehow, perhaps by way of your new powers, you can hear Ai speak, despite her mute nature. All that night, as the two of you shake the mountain, you hear many things, some sweet, some incredibly flattering, and some that you can't decide whether you'd call disturbing or exciting. When you finally finish, you explain your about what you heard, and Ai's face turns bright red as she hides her face beneath the covers, just like the old days.

The next morning, or somewhere around noon, you enter the kitchen to find food, but instead encounter a very exhausted spider near a pile of 4 large goats. You pat him on the head in thanks, and head back to Ai.

As Ai rests to regain her energy that afternoon, you head into town to see if you can assist Vicart. You find him in the center of town, in a corded of area where he appears to be preparing a circle. Leman is off to the side, mixing up components. You greet them, then sit beside Leman, and help him with his part of the work.

As the two of you sit, mixing powders and pastes, you make small talk, getting to know each other a bit better. You ask him what he plans to do next.

"Well technically speaking, this was a vacation. Normally we aren't supposed to go on just any adventure that isn't for the sake of the church, but I still felt like I owed you guys for trying to kill you and all, so when Vicart asked I took time off and came with him to help you."

You thank him for doing so much, and assure him that any debts he may have owed you are more than forgiven now. You then ask his opinion of your becoming a god, and whether his people would frown on it.

"I can't say I appreciate being called your vassal, but it's not as though we don't know there are other gods in the world. Most people assume we live to do nothing but crusade and extend the reach of our gods, but that's not true. It's not really about forcing your own will on other people. It's not even really about fighting evil. Evil is too subjective. MY dad told me once, when I was a kid, that there is no true good or true evil. Only laws, set in place by gods or men." This strikes a chord with you. Curious, you ask Leman what his father is like.

"Hm. He's kind of tall, I guess. And really nice to most people. He's been head inquisitor since before I was born, but honestly I think he should be tougher on the men. He and my mom are always together too. Up until my first sister as born, they would go on missions together all the time. But a few years after that, my mom was basically carrying a baby around constantly. It got to the point where they both thought it would be better to stay at home more, to raise us. My dad still goers on really important missions, but those aren't as common these days." After a few minutes of awkward silence, you tell Leman that if you must be a god, you'll try to be a kind one. "If you say so. I don't plan to ever come back here again, so do what you like."
>>
>>29159545
You spend the next few days alternating between helping Vicart and Leman, training, and bonding with Ai. Out of courtesy for nature, you begin bringing Ai into your realm when the two of you must be amorous. It's actually quite an improvement, since you can hide away in your tower and do as you like. When Vicart and Leman leave, you say goodbye, promising to see them again someday. As they disappear in a column of fire, you hold Ai. The townsfolk still seem to clamor to you when you're around, and so you don't spend much time there.

One night, a month or two later, as you and Ai lay in a pile of pillows in a candle light room somewhere in the tower, you hear a giggle. You turn and see the Moonchilde. She sits cross legged on top of her pearl, floating in the air.

And that wraps up the second chapter of Rags to Riches. Kind of an abrupt end, but I think it works. I hope you guys had a good time playing, because I had a great time running.

There probably won't be a new quest thread from me for a while, at least a week while I come up with ideas. But I'll be around /tg/ in the meantime, lurking mostly. I might leave my trip on, without the name when I browse.

In any case, if you guys care at all about my next thread, feel free to suggest what I might try next. I would be happy to do more Rags to Riches, but I could also maybe come up with something new, or try another type of quest if you like.
