Inventory: Catarina's Cell Phone, Locked Briefcase

The story so far: You were summoned to Naples, Italy from your home in Madrid to receive ominous news. Your father, Hidalgo, has gone missing and is presumed dead. You have agreed, for the time being, to take his place as an Executor, a mysterious branch of the Church dedicated to the annihilation of all that would besmirch the name of God. The woman who has told you all of this, Catarina Belmont, has decided to test your abilities before taking you under her wing for training. You have come to a warehouse out by the docks with the goal of scouting its interior for her. This has been complicated by your discovery of a pile of human corpses, as well as the ghoul who left them there...
>>
You are face to face with a monster. You do not know for sure what it is, or where it has come from, but you are certain that this is the creature that killed all of the people behind you. You have never felt quite so helpless in your life.

But as it salivates, and eyes you hungrily, you realize your survival comes first. Weak or not, you have to do something if you don't want to become like these dead.

>1. Attack the ghoul, and try to gain the initiative. (d100)

Your best bet is the briefcase that Catarina gave you. With any luck, she hid some kind of weapon in here. You pry at the briefcase, but you find it still will not budge. "Shit!"

The thing lurking in the shadows lacks the courtesy to let you play with it any longer. It lurches forward, and you catch a glimpse of it as it hits you. It looks like a man, but its mottled gray skin is rotten and coated in its own dried blood. Its clothes are in tatters, and vicious-looking claws twist out from the tips of its fingers. It swipes a hand at you, and you can only throw up your arms to defend yourself.

The claws rake across your forearms, and you scream as it tears open multiple wounds. Your own blood goes flying in every direction, and the force of the blow sends you careening to your left.

Dust flies as your body thuds against the metal crate, and the world around you is spinning. Your arms feel like they're on fire. (3/15 Wounds.)

As you try to move your quivering legs, you hear a snap. Your eyes are drawn to the briefcase, dropped to the floor when you blocked that thing's attack. A few drops of blood trickle down its side. The latch is undone, and it is now cracked open, ever so slightly.

>1. Ignore the briefcase, run! (d100)

You lunge for the briefcase, determined to get at its contents, but the ghoul cuts you off. Your bodies collide, and you blanch as you find your opponent is stronger than you. The impact alone sends you skidding backwards, your soles wearing against the concrete floor. The monster doesn't skip a beat, and comes slashing at your neck.

You yelp in surprised and duck back from the haphazard swings, avoiding injury, but you're no closer to the briefcase than before. This isn't working, you tell yourself. You've got to find some way to get around this thing.

>1. Keep going for that briefcase. (d100)

You roar and dive at your opponent, throwing a heavy punch at his head. But the ghoul is agile and weaves around your strike. It lashes out at you, and you avoid him. By some instinct you don't understand, you follow his motion and go around it, slamming your shoulder into his.

"This time, I push YOU!"

The creature is forced back a few precious feet, and with a yell you shove him back. You haven't hurt the thing, but there is a silver lining: the case is at your feet.

You waste no time snatching up the case, flipping back the lid and taking a look at the contents. The sight confounds you.

Inside the box there are two plain short swords. Their hilts are wrapped in red cloth, and sit upon velvet bedding. This is what Catarina sent you with? Why would she send you weapons unless... unless she knew what was waiting here?

You toss the box aside, feeling the swords as they rest in your hands. They are remarkably light, but you don't find them comfortable. These are tools of death, not of God.

The creature hisses at you.

But even so, you still need to defend yourself. You bend your knees and brace as the ghoul charges at you. Your eyes open wide, and for a second time stands still; you understand exactly where to place yourself. With your left hand, you swing your sword and catch the ghoul's arm between the ring and middle fingers. The blade travels upward, splitting most of the creature's arm in half.

The ghoul shrieks, its ragged vocal chords making a mockery of human noise as you drive your second blade right into its neck. Blood spurts out, flecking your arm and coat.

You withdraw your blades from the frozen creature, taking a step backward. The ghoul seizes up, twitching for a few moments before grasping out at you. Its eyes are moving rapidly, clearly in the grip of terror.

It takes a step forward, and you take one back. It collapses to its knees, choking as it tries to clamp its wounds shut with its one working arm. It is clearly dying.

"Heavenly Father," you pray, "grant unto this pathetic creature your grace, and forgive its sins. Its mind is not its own." With a quiet "Amen" you raise one blade, and stab downward. Your sword pierces the skull of the ghoul. Its body slumps, and collides with the floor.

It is done.

And all at once, your strength is gone. You collapse to your knees, and for the first time, you feel your heart slamming against your ribs like a hammer. You grip your chest tightly, and gasp. Your arms are still bleeding.

You almost died. You were almost killed.

By a monster. A ghoul. A vampire.

Your Faith is now Shaken.

Just because we dealt with one ghoul doesn't mean that the entire problem is resolved. There might be more to this warehouse, there might be others connected to this ghoul.
>>
>>29101751
You sit for a moment, and try to calm yourself. It's harder than you expected. Everything's gone so wrong tonight. Your father may be dead. You've pledged your allegiance to an organization you do not yet understand. And you've just killed a person.

No, you correct yourself. Not a person. A beast. A horrendous creature that was an affront to human nature. This was its nest, and you came and destroyed it. What was this thing? From where did it come? Why was it... your stomach turns just thinking about it, but why was it hoarding these people? You have so many questions, but you doubt any of the answers are pleasant.

You look around this empty, foul place. Are there any other creatures like it here? Do you wish to stick around, if that's the case?

>1. Search this place once more. If there are more ghouls, they cannot be allowed to live.

It is time to get moving. If there are others like that ghoul, they can't be allowed to stay here. Your sense of trepidation has faded with weapons in your hands, and you step into the darkness boldly. You search the warehouse up and down, seeking any sign of more ghouls. You find a few shards of cloth and bone scattered in dark corners. Signs of the lurking beast long dead, but that is all. It seems this was the only thing of its kind here. The warehouse cleared, you stand by the northern exit. There isn't much else for you to do here, and you are left with the choice of what to do next.

You step outside, retrieving the old cell phone from your pocket. Its screen is cracked, and you can barely make out what's on it as you navigate to the contacts list. Sure enough, there is only a single number there. Assuming it is Catarina's, you call it.

You hold the phone to your ear and hear it ring twice before it clicks. On the other end of the line you hear a heavy, annoyed sigh. Perhaps you've woken her up from another nap. "What?" asks Ms. Belmont, curtly. "Are you done?"

There are a lot of things you have to say to this woman after what's transpired here. You must choose what grievances you air, and which you keep to yourself.

"Done?" you ask, just a tinge of offense in your tone. "You mean, am I done breaking and entering into public property? Am I done stumbling onto... to piles of corpses?! Am I done fighting some kind of--of vampire?!"

"Ghoul," she blithely corrects.

"I don't care!" you tell her. "That whatever it was killed people, and now I've killed it! So if that's what you meant... then yes. Yes, I am done."

"Good." She doesn't seem perturbed by your angry response. You hear her yawn on the other line, as well as some faint noise in the background. A thrumming. An engine, maybe? "Get in the car. We can talk more on the way back."

"Car?" you ask. "What car--"

Your thought is interrupted by a black Mercedes rolling up to the warehouse, stopping directly in front of where you stand. Its tinted windows roll down, revealing Catarina in the driver's seat, a pair of small circular shades on her face. "Well?" she asks.

The car drives away. You're now sitting in the passenger seat, glancing at the strange woman as she drives slowly through the streets of Naples. She isn't saying anything. Maybe she expects you to ask questions.

I already know you knew of that...thing and what it's done. I know that you gave me the swords to slay it and the reason for me to go there is a trial for the executers.

But what was that exactly, a ghoul? How vampires really work compare to reality? Why are we keeping this a secret to the public? After all, they were just fantasy until today. I mean, I manage to kill it with a sword, so guns should kills ghouls and vampires right? I don't understand why killing vampires is related to protecting our faith.

All around you, the nightlife of Naples is dying. Storefronts are beginning to close up, the bright neon lights dimming. Drunken bar hoppers are stumbling home. The lanes are empty save for you and the rare taxi. In the quiet repose, you ask Catarina of all that has occurred on this outing.

"What, exactly, was that thing?"

"A Ghoul," she tells you, not taking her eyes off of the road. "A ravenous nightwalker that craves human flesh. It's pretty standard fare."

You lean back in your seat, hands behind your head, cradling the aching appendage. "You corrected me when I called it a vampire. Is there a difference?"

"Yes," she explains. She holds up two fingers, tapping them together. "Think of a Ghoul and a Vampire in the same way you might think of a caterpillar and butterfly. Same species, but one's in an earlier stage of development. A Ghoul is the rare exception to a vampire's victims, whose brain and soul are not fully destroyed when fed upon. They maintain an ounce of self-agency, and persist in the world even though their body is dead. They are consumed by a desire for blood, and lack any kind of intellect. They want to grow, and become a thinking being again. The same way a caterpillar wants to grow and become a butterfly. They each progress through a stage of metamorphosis in their lifetime, and they do it the same way: eating as much as they possibly can."

"That ghoul you faced was an infant," she explained. "It had only just begun to feed. If it had been allowed to keep doing that for another century, it might have become an intelligent vampire. A much deadlier breed."

You whistle, impressed by the knowledge you've been given. "I suppose it's silly to ask at this point, but all this you've told me... vampires are real, then?"

"Very real," Catarina tells you. "And very dangerous."
>>
>>29104564
Another question rises. "But that ghoul that I killed... it only perished when I pierced its brain. Aren't vampires' hearts their weakness? And the sun?"

"They are weak to the sun," your mentor confirms. "but don't let pop culture distract you from the truth. Some vampires are strong enough to walk openly in sunlight. Never trust it as a weapon. Those weapons you carry are special, but that's not why they worked. For the most part, any weapon will kill a vampire if sufficient damage is dealt. Just be thorough."

"What is so special about these blades, then?"

"They're Black Keys. They're our weakest tools. Symbolic, but effective against vampires. The only function of theirs you need to understand is that they damage the spirit more than the physical. They make good tools for ghoul-killing."

Catarina slams on the brakes. The car screams to a halt, and as you lurch forward you come an inch from smashing your head into the dashboard. You look up to see where she's glaring, and find yourself staring at a pedestrian just in front of the car. He is dressed lightly on this cool night, only a loose white shirt over what appears to be a VERY well-built torso. His face is almost white in the glare of the car's headlights, but even distorted you can see its impeccable beauty. His angelic features are complemented by silky blond hair falling to his shoulders. He is almost distressingly good-looking.

But what's really distressing you is the way he's smiling at you. His squinting red eyes are fixated on you, and an amused grin is dancing on his face. There's no mistaking that he's staring straight at you, and not the car in general.

"Move it!" howls your driver, laying into the horn as she does. You see the man in the headlights shrug, and his stomach jumps with a quick laugh. He turns away and finishes crossing the street, waving back at you as he goes. You find your eyes following him as Catarina steps on the gas to pull away.

"Fuggin prick," she mutters.
>>
>>29104582
You let a few minutes of silence pass, your thoughts swimming with the uncomfortable memory of that man. He was entrancing, yet something about him made your skin crawl. You're only awoken from your stupor when you're patted on the shoulder by your companion.

"Hey, Bartolomè. You were still asking me questions."

"Oh, right. Discúlpeme. I am confused, is all. You know so much of these creatures, and you already own such deadly tools. Why did you need me to perform this task?"

Catarina has that wry smile again. You think it may be more disturbing than that man. "Oh, that's one's easy. It would be a pretty shitty test if I did it for you. Wouldn't you agree?"

That confirms it, then. "So you knew this whole time? You knew that thing was waiting for me?"

"Well, yeah," she says, glancing at you with a confused expression. "It had been lurking around Naples for a few months, actually. It was deadly enough to be a threat, but weak enough that you might actually stand a chance. It was the best test I had available for you."
>>
>>29104602

Something is troubling you. "If you knew about this ghoul, why let it roam? If you'd intervened sooner, you could have saved all of those people."

Catarina is silent for longer than usual. "It's our policy. We can't intervene unless we can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the one we're hunting is a Dead Apostle."

"A what?" you ask, interrupting her. She waves her hand.

"As far as you're concerned, a vampire."

"So... you didn't have the proof of its existence?"

She shrugs. "Doesn't matter anymore. You stumbled across it while scouting as a part of your test. You killed it in self-defense. It's dead and gone."

It slowly dawns on you what your superior has just done.

"I think I understand," you say, but curiosity gets the best of you. "But that ghoul... do you think it had something to do with what happened to my father?"

She shrugs yet again. "It's possible."

"You think he killed him, then?"

"No," she says shortly. "I meant it might be connected. Have you considered where that ghoul came from?"

"You don't mean..?"

"It has a father, somewhere. A vampire that created it out of some meal. No telling just who was responsible, but there might be clues on his body who he was, where he came from. Who he might have interacted with."

"W-wait, then shouldn't we turn around and grab his body?"

"You worry too much. Another agent will pick it up and bring it to the church tomorrow. We're very thorough when it comes to evidence. Speaking of..."

She pulls to the side of the road, and parks the car before turning her head to look at you. She leans toward you, pressing your back up against the window as her eyes scan up and down your body.

Don't wash this, we might need some of that later. And make sure not to get any of your own mixed in, you should really get these wounds dressed."

"Oh. Okay," you say quietly as she puts the car back in drive. "I mean, I haven't really had the time..." You both take off again, and you find it hard to re-ignite the conversation. Though there is one thing nagging at you.

"Magic?" you ask, stupefied. "You mean to tell me that there's magic, and witchcraft, and wizardry out there?"

She looks at you right back with your own expression. "You just tangled with Dracula's mentally deficient cousin. This is the line in the sand you draw?" You open your mouth to retort, but find yourself lacking anything to say. She does have a point.

She shrugs. "Don't get worked up. The acclimation to this job's never easy. But yes, there is magic. And there is an order dedicated to its study and preservation. It's called the Mages' Association. There's not much I can say about them other than keep your distance. Self-righteous sociopaths to the last. We and they don't mix well. I'm sure you'll run into them someday, though. Ask them if you want to know how all of their stuff works. Our thaumaturgical principles work differently enough to be an unrelated school."

"Thauma-what?" you say, bewildered.

"Just jargon. You'll learn it in time." The car screeches to a halt, and you find yourself outside a nice hotel near downtown. Catarina places a set of keys into your hand.

"Your room's number 836," she informs you. "You'll find your luggage and some packets waiting for you there, but they can wait until morning."

She pats your fluffy hair twice. Maybe it was an affectionate gesture in her mind. You step out of the car, and only an instant later she begins to pull away. "Night, Bartolomè. You did good work tonight."

She peels away into traffic, and is gone.

You find your room on the eighth floor, and step inside the suite. There are two rooms, one a living room with a television, sofa, and small kitchen area, and a bedroom with attached bathroom. It seems this will be your home away from home, for a time. It's cold.

Take of our clothes but don't wash them.

Patch up our injuries and eat as well drink water.

Then fucking pray, pray until you fall asleep.

You find your luggage waiting beside your bed, and change into warm clothes for the night. There is a first aid kit in the bathroom, and you use some gauze to wrap up your arms, now scabbed over. Your whole body feels drained, presented with too much information to process. These Executors, this Catarina, speaks so casually of heresies of the highest order. Witchcraft. Murder. If these are your father's associates, would it not perhaps be better not to learn what depths he had mired himself in? As you sit at the foot of the bed, you hold in your hands a manila envelope you found on the desk. The packets Catarina told you about. They hold valuable information, but the way she worded it troubles you. It sounded like she hoped you wouldn't read them just yet.

>1. Open the packet, and look inside.
>2. Leave the packet, and sleep for the night.

On the one hand, she said that it could wait until morning- it could be that whatever is in here could disturb our sleep, or is the last point we have to turn back, and to give us more time to make that decision.

In which case, fuck that. We've come too deep to turn back now. Open the packet.

We already seen some shit. Might as well give it a rest and not leave it for tomorrow.

She is probably hoping we'll rest, and wake at ease and pliable for her tomorrow morn.

... We probably are about ready to pass out though.

Your weary hands flip the packet over and undo the metal clasp, opening it up. You reach inside and pull out a bundle of various things. A few photos, some folded documents, and one thing that catches your attention above the rest. It is a tiny white envelope sealed with the wax stamp of your church. Your hands move quickly, undoing the seal and tearing out a letter.

"Dearest Bartolomè," it begins. Your hands shake as you read the letter from beginning to end. Addressed to you, and according to the date, written only three days ago. At the bottom of the page is a signature you know very well.

"All my love, my son,
-Hidalgo de la Fuente"

It should come as strangely relaxing. Even if it reminds us that our father is most likely dead... It is something of our father. And it reassures us that this organization is something he himself found worthy of a servant of god.

And that's where we'll stop for tonight.

Once again, thank you all so much for humoring my shenanigans, thanks for playing! I hope you enjoyed it (though let me know if there are things you DIDN'T enjoy and I can improve for next time.)

Shameless shill powers, activate!

I'll try and keep updated both there and on qtg for the next thread's arrival.

I'm not going to lie, I was hoping to elbow drop the ghoul in the first quest. But I didn't realize the getting closer part would move us to the ground, so can you please clarify a little more in combat/almost combat situations?
