It's frustrating, the way you never seem to win.

Every day you come here to the gym, an older building, polished wooden floors and concrete walls and ceiling. People work out around the room, lifting and working the bags. It's become a second home to you, you even have your own locker. Every day you do your exercises and stretches, spend a while on the bag, then strap on your pads and square off with Donna, your mentor. You're thankful for her help, really. You've gotten a lot better in the couple of years she's been teaching you, you can take on most of the other amateur kickboxers who go here. And win too!

But never with Donna. Damnit. Today, just like every day, you strap on your pads over your sweats and tanktop, helmet, gloves, boots. You bounce on the balls of your bare feet a few times, then step onto the mat. "Feeling good today, Bianca?" Donna asks, pounding her gloves together and bouncing up and down, striding towards the middle of the ring. She's trying to be nice, like she always is, but you're in a bit of a... sour mood, and it's frustrating. She, a longtime friend, brought you here when you were recovering from a broken leg years ago, and started teaching you.

"Just great, Donna." You go to the middle of the ring and tap her glove with your own, before bouncing back a few steps. She takes a classic english boxing stance, while you take a Muay Thai stance. You wait for the ref to ring the bell, and you're in eachothers faces. A couple of quick blows are traded- She snaps a left jab at your face, but you sway to the left and she punches air, but follows up with a quick right hook you barely get away from by leaning back. You respond with a quick left jab, the same she used, she did teach you after all, and she dodges perfectly. You follow up with a right high kick to the side of the head, but she blocks with her forarms and pushes off, letting you bounce back.

>>29061847
"Oooh, bloodthirsty today?" She teases, shaking her arms and moving back a bit, swinging her fists up to guard her face. You are, honestly. You started the day off hard, having had bad dreams for nearly a week straight, and you can't stop thinking about how you keep losing. No, it doesn't matter that she's been at it longer than you, or that she taught you. It's annoying. You try and shake it off and keep your head in the game as she takes your distraction for an openning- You have to jerk back and bounce back a few steps to avoid a jab to the nose.

Your response is to go straight in, snapping out another left jab, then a right high kick. She dodges and blocks again, but you snap her in the nose with another left jab while she's pushing your kick away. She bounces back and you go after her again, going for a roundhouse with your right leg- she ducks, but you keep spinning, landing on your right leg and swinging around to try and take her in the temple with your left heel. She blocks! Damnit, and now she's twisting in and DAMNIT, a right hook to your open side. You hit the ground and roll, getting back on you feet quickly and taking your stance again.

You keep back, hands up to guard. She comes fast, long and powerful legs carrying her like a bullet, and leads with a hook at your head. You duck under, and block the follow-up hook to your side, and use the other arm to snap off a pair of jabs to her face. She beaks off, skipping backwards and out of your reach. "Atta girl!" You hear her cheer. She's a good friend, even if her good mood is getting on your nerves.

There's a ringing in your ears as she says something else, before darting in again. You weave back and forth to dodge a few jabs and a hook, then catch a wide hook with your forearms. You snap out another couple of jabs to the face- her nose is getting a bit on the bloody side by now- then swing up a kick to her hip when she breaks off. She skips away, limping slightly.

"Christ that stings!" You hear her over the ringing. It's making your head hurt by now, a little distracting. She switches stance, taking up the same Muay Thai stance you're using. And this is the part where she always nearly breaks you, she kicks a lot harder than she punches.

You keep back, letting her come to you. You block a couple of jabs then use both arms to block a snap kick at your side, nearly losing your air as she forces you back a bit. She swivels on her toes and twists around three-sixty, swinging her heel around at you head. You block again, barely, and get forced back a few steps. But she leaves herself open as she comes down off it, a snap kick finding the same spot your last kick hit, hitting her hip.

"Ssshit, that hurt." She hisses, barely audible through the ringing and buzzing. The two of your circle, she's feeling the burn in that hip, and your forearms are hurting a good bit from blocking those kicks. "Lookin' a little unsteady. You alright, Bia-?" Most of your name gets garbled in static.

You give her a grunt while you keep your distance.

She darts in on those damn, mile long legs. You take your chance, meeting her with another kick to the hip- But you jumped the gun! Damnit! She blocks with a snapped up leg, catching your kick with her shin, then kicking just enough to make you lose your footing and stumble back, She snaps up her leg for another high kick- then drops it back down, a feint, and your arms are already up. You're fully open when she gives you a snap kick to the solar plexus. The air is out of your lungs, you're hurting something fierce, and your head is like a beehive.

"Bia-!" Most of your name is garbled again as you go down to your hands and knees. She holds your hair back while you puke, then stops you from falling into it, hoisting you up and helping you to stumble along. "I got ya." She says, rubbing your back slightly as you pass the janitor on the way to the locker rooms.

She helps you to the sink, and you puke again while she holds your hair back and keeps you standing. You look up into the mirror, your pitch black hair looking limp, green eyes dull, and skin pale. "Jesus, Bia-." Your name keeps getting lost in that buzzing. "You're burning up." She mutters, feeling your forehead as she helps you sit down. Your phone rings in your pocket, you thought you'd put that in your bag.

"Thanks... you got any aspirin or something?" You ask, and she nods and heads toward her locker. In the mean time, you draw your phone. This isn't your phone. Your phone is five years out of date, half busted, and a flip phone. This one of a tiny little smartphone, a black screen with a green M, the back is gold with a black caduceus on it. You hesitantly press the button and an IM program opens up.

"Bonjour, Bia. It has been a very long time since we last spoke! I know you must be wondering what is going on, the first ascent is always hard on a godling." The message, from sender 'Hermes' says.

"What?" You ask out loud, rubbing your eyes.

"Simple, dear. You've been chosen for greatness by the Fates. They've waited a long, long time, you know. Millenia, even. They woke me up first, and made me strong, so that I may do my traditional duty. Ask the questions I know you have." The message comes up.

>How did you get this phone in my pocket?
"I didn't. The Fates did. A little gift, preparation. A chance."

>Fates?!
>Who are 'they', and what do they want?
"Yes. The Fates. Immortal, unfathomable, unstoppable. They have lived while we died, we faded. They have grown stronger. Strong enough to control everything. As for what they want? Why, they want their world back! Their age ended with the fading of the gods, when belief died, so did they. But oh, pop culture. It's brought back belief and imagination, and enough people believe that we atleast once existed, that we are able to come back." He text explains.

"But they think that that is still a touch boring. So thy created... a game. For them, atleast. The godlings shall pass their trials or die. Each who survives and thrives, growing in the trials and challenges, shall ascend when they finally reach the peak of Olympus. The great power of myth shall be spread amongst them... equally. A little incentive on the part of the Fates. You want a team! Friends and allies who will help see you to your true ascension! But you also don't want too many
godlings to make it, that would mean less power for you, after all. It's war, my dear. War. And you're on the front and in the thickest of it."

"Oookay! I'll be here when you get your proof. Just so you know? The other pantheons didn't get as badly decimated as we did. There's still remnants of them, and they're nooot super happy. Look out for monsters. Have fun."

You scoff and turn the phone off, putting it in your pocket. Donna -finally- returns with an aspirin, and you knock it back. "You ok?" She asks, and you nod. You're feeling a bit better now. She helps you to your feet. "I think you should go to the hospital, get checked out, y'know?" She seems concerned.

"I'm fine. I just need to try and sleep it off." You promise, and she nods. She wishes you the best as you strip your pads off and pull on a pair of sneakers, not bothering to change, then head out. Climbing into the car and turning it on, the radio lights up. It's some song from the fifties, about Egypt. It makes your headache worse, a lot worse, so you turn it off.

Your radio keeps coming on and you keep turning it off. Your back is killing you- did you land on it when Donna hit you? You don't remember. You keep going over the fight in your head, thinking of every single way you could have moved or swung or kicked to have won. The radio is on again, and you can't resist just punching the damn button. You recoil when your fist goes into the dash, crushing the stereo to a pulp.

"Oh god, what the fuck?" You hiss, then a jolt of pain in your head makes you wince and look up. There's a man in the road. Something's not right about him. It's like looking at a mirage. You swerve to try and not hit him, but you rip the damn steering wheel off the column, and the car jerks to the side. It's not like in books or movies, where everything is just chaotic and 'the next thing you know is'... nah. You experience every second. You're on your side, then your top then your side, then back rightside up, then on your side, then your top... you skid to a stop hanging in the seat by your seatbelt.

"God damnit..." You hiss, trying to unbuckle yourself- and crushing the buckle in your hand. You stop trying and just rip it out of the seat, falling down into the car in a heap. It doesn't hurt, surprisingly. Really, the only thing that hurts is your back, which is killing you. You kick the door open and crawl out, wincing at the light in your eyes. You look up, and the man is standing over you.

He's easily ten feet tall, white-grey skin stretched over chiseled muscle, garbed in some sort strange gold skirt/loincloth, with arm and leg wraps of golden silk. He cocks his head- the head of a black furred jackel with an Egyptian headdress- at you, glaring. He raises up his staff, tipped in a crescent blade, and swings down at you.

Instinct takes over. You're off like a shot, past his staff and in his guard. You hit him in the chest with your shoulder and force him back, then twist and bend, delivering a side kick to his gut and sending him sliding back on clawed feet. You raise your fists and take your favorite Muay Thai stance. It feels good. Natural. Your back is still killing you, but you can ignore it.

You don't have a lot of time to think as the creature swings up its staff into a guarded pose. It's out for blood. You're going to make it work for yours.

You stay back, keeping your guard up. It advances, winding up and taking a wide, horizontal swing. You skip back out of range, back up against your flipped car, and it advances further, winding up again. It swings overhead, a diagonal strike that you sidestep, planning to let it hit your car and jar him enough for you to get an opening. That's... not quite how it goes, though.

You ignore your car being cleaved nearly in half, ducking in past the staff, into his guard, and delivering a staccato of quick jabs to his chest and sides. He is forced back a step with each blow, and finally stumbles- your cue to give a had snap kick to his hip and send him skidding to the side nearly a foot. He disengages, leaping backwards and swinging up a hand. Dirt and gravel start to rise from the road, swirling around you and condensing into long, thin blades as it chants, voice guttural and gravelly, in Egyptian.

He lands on his feet, though, and meets you as you dart at him again.

Ducking under a wide, powerful swing, you let your fingertips slide across the flat of the blade, deflecting it. Your response is swift, a powerful pair of jabs to his chest, then a high kick to his upper arm, resulting in a satisfying crunch that makes it go limp. He takes a wild swing with his staff in his other hand, but you easily leap away. He's solidly on his last legs, but he's not giving up from the look of things.

His main advantage is that staff. You need to deprive him of it. You dart in, slower than before, and let him swing overhead at you, but your foot hits the ground and you take a quick step forward. The staff hits your shoulder, but the blade is behind you, and you grab the staff in both hands. You hold on as tight as you can, and step in just a bit, delivering a powerful side kick into his solar plexus.

Your grip is better than his, though the blade does slide forward and cut into your back, and he loses his grip and goes sliding back. You spin the staff in your hands- It feels good, natural, even though you've never used a staff or spear or anything like that before. You raise it in both hands, blade forward, and square off again. It's undeterred, and raises it's hand again, chanting once more. The sand left from the destroyed razors rises and begins to form, once again, into thin blades.

Your back isn't hurting anymore, even though you cut it. It feels good, even if there's a slight weight that wasn't there before.

You dart forward once more, a great wind behind you throwing you further forward. He's ready this time, blades maneuvering between you to try end block, but you swing with the staff and shatter them. You go under his arm, catching him around the middle with the blade of your weapon, and keep on going, hitting the ground on your feet and swinging forward. The sand blades explode as blade liquid is flung in a crescent around you, and you stand, using the staff to support yourself as you look over your shoulder.

Great golden wings, grown from your back, sink into your flesh. With one final flap as they disappear into your body, the bisected body is blown away as it dissolves into sand. You're oddly calm, the adrenaline pumping through your system dissipating as your heart slows its frantic beating. In seconds, no signs of your battle remain except for your new staff, your destroyed car, and the black stain on the street. Even the small cut on your back has stopped bleeding.

You look around. You need to get home, you need to... to... not be here right now. You need to clear your head. You look behind you and focus on the feeling o having wings again... it's not hard. It was a unique experience, really. And one you will not forget- especially since you can do it again. Golden wings, like an angel's, grow from your back. They're enormous, and you give them an experimental flat, a gust sending sand and gravel flying away. You lift off with a few more flaps, it's a good feeling as you fly up into the air and hover. One last thing... You focus on the spear, trying to make it a bit more to your liking. All you manage to do is make it dissolve into golden sand- no, wait! The sand twists and compacts around your wrist, turning into a little gold chain bracelet with a tiny silver crescent charm.

You take to the air, drawing your new little phone. You try and fiddle with it for a moment, landing on a tall rooftop as you do, but text fills the screen. "Oh dear me, Bia. Did you get your proof? I got to see you take on a servant of Anubis... always nice to hear from our Egyptian cousins. You have questions now? I'm glad to answer all I can." The text says. "Bia, Goddess of Force, Power, Might, and Compulsion. Winged enforcer of Zeus. You were a scary one, my dear. And you still don't fail to impress."

>How did you see me?
"Oh, well you see, the Fates gave me my First Ascent before any of the others. They demanded I be the messenger and observer, a referee of sorts. Not a fighter, of course, but I can see everything that happens, and I know. And I report to the Fates, and they know."

>How scary are we talking about?
"Well, you terrified a Titan, then when he snuck around, you beat the tar out of him. Ah Prometheus. Poor bastard... Ah, sorry, you probably don't care for my whining..."

>What is this gold chain on my wrist?
"Your trophy! You defeated a spawn of Anubis, and took his staff as your prize. All creatures of Myth will dissolve when they die, but they will leave a piece of themselves behind, a trophy to their slayer. The Nemean Lion left its hide, Medusa left her head, the Stygian Birds left their feathers, etcetera. The passing of trials give you fractions of your true powers back, but the defeating of Mythic beings will give you an armory of relics and trophies."

>More questions? If not, we'll move on.

>How can I find more mythological beasts, then? That one found me. Can I do like-wise?
"You can, yes. Things around creatures of Myth swayed towards them. You heard Egyptian music before encountering it, right? Or atleast a song about Egypt? Plus mirages, sand on the streets... You need to pick up on cues to figure out where Myths are and what sort of creatures they are."

"Right... I'll... I'll be in contact, I guess." You mutter, and the phone gives a cheery tone before going blank. You stow it in your pocket and leap from the edge of the building, spreading your wings and taking to the sky. It's a feeling like no other, the wind in your face, your powerful wings beating and taking you into the air, the ground below seeming pointless to you right now. You eventually land on the balcony of your second story apartment, it's a little place, but it's yours. You drag yourself in and collapse into your bed, worn and battered from the day.

Sleep finds you quickly.

>That's it for today, folks. I'll be running again tomorrow, probably pretty early. If this thread is still around, I'll use it. Thanks for playing! I hope you all enjoyed it. I'm open to suggestions and requests, so feel free to give me your ideas!
