>We are humans and we hate everybody

The Free People of Greystream people prepare for war. Reports from the Dwarves tell of Orcs leading hordes of undead risen from beneath the sands, all marching toward your fledgling republic. In response, you have sent out half of your (proportionally small) standing army, as well as many of your carpenters and masons, to build a fortress in the gap between the Dwarven mountains and the sea. Your remaining forces murmur discontent at having so few to defend against incursions from Kobold pirates.

It has been a year since you sent the men to build a fortress. Very little has happened in that time. The harvest came and went, the fortress walls rose, the city of Rolanton and the town of Norbry have both grown, and your people repelled what minor Kobold raids came. The Orcs set a laborous pace, moving only a little, then camping for weeks while they raise more dead, so they have not reached your fortress yet.

Speaking of that fortress, my lords, now that it is complete, it will need a name. What will you name your borderfortress, which defends you from the orcish undead hordes?

>>

My lord, that is exceptionally fertile farmland. The soil is moist, the sun shines bright, and the northern swamp leads to extremely regular and dependable rainfall.
>>
>>29007611
I assume perfect farm land or something...
(Captcha Settlers shoscrm)
>>
>>29007363
We should try and make a plan with our dorfish allies;
If the orcs approach our border fortress, the dorfs should raid them from the north, sneaky attacky.
and vice versa.
Keep a messenger ready to rush to the dorfs if this situation should arise
>>
>>29007363
Hello gentlemen, tis a great day to see you all. I apologize if I failed last year to properly do my duty but I was having sleep issues at the time. Now to the fort. I vote that we name it Shield-Brook, for it shall break the attack of the Orcish army like a brook's stream against a shield. Now, what are the next matters at hand?
>>
>>29007744
Seconding the name
>>29007714
I vote we figure out how we deal with the little lizard midgets before we get on to the big green bastards...
>>
>>29007714
>>29007769
I do think it would be smart to keep a messenger at hand to dispatch to the dwarf, however I think it might be wise to send one right now to ask for the dwarfs to be ready to attack the orcs. On that note, is there a way that we could divert the orcs from smashing into us, to smashing into the goblins because that would be great. Any ideas?
>>
>>29007797
Goblins? Do you mean Kobolds sir?
>>
>>29007744
>>29007769
My lords, Shieldbrook is a fine name for a fortress. I shall send a letter to Shieldbrook post hatse, informing them of their official name, along with the monthly caravan of supplies.

>>29007797
I shall also arrange for messengers to the Dwarven folk. Your battle strategy is sound as ever, my lords. It shall be so.

As i recall, when this senate last met, my lords were debating forming another settlement, would my lords like do discuss such matters?
>>
>>29007769
the orcs are already amassing it seemed last thread, we might not have the opportunity to chose our enemies right now, better to be prepared in case shit hits the fan, and also put a two-front pressure on the orcs. we have allies, let's use them

>>29007833
I say send surveyors to the nearby mountains of Shieldbrook, we might strike "gold"
>>
>>29007830
Yes, I meant Kobolds. I am sorry but I have been having some memory problems as well, I blame it on the blows to the head I took in the last Kobold raid.

I would propose that we build a settlement in the fertile land below Shieldbrook, it is the perfect land for farming and we can certainly take advantage of that.
>>
>>29007833
>>29007797
Ahhh yes yes... How would you feel about one right on the lip of the fertile zone >>29007861
I feel instead of moving in to strike gold we should be assured we have the food the dwarves will be needing in the coming year... It will allow us to make more deals with others... I assume the swamps are pretty devoid of foods... Lizards should be easy to persuade with some corn and cattle...
>>
>>29007893
if we are to settle a farm-town. I would like to place it on the middle tile on the closest row to lizardland. fortify it there, so the farms will be on the protected side deep in our territory
>>
>>29007893
>>29007944
Unless there are no other representives weighing in, it is decided. We settle a new colony on the lip of the fertile lands south of Southbrook, on the swampy side, so that we may bring in even more food to trade to the dwarves for favorable agreements and other iron. The food may also be used to trade with the Lizard-folk in future trade deals. We should also attempt to send some people to survey the mountain range near Shieldbrook in the hopes that it holds valuable ore. Is this agreeable to the council?

The councillor skitters off with his notes in order to prepare groups of settlers to form your new farming village.

A few weeks pass, and the Kobolds try to raid your people several times, but are turned back by the boom, unable to get past it.

The councillor returns to the senate, with a troubled look. "My lords, the people are quite upset. Nearly in a riot. The people are angered that the priests at the Temple does not pay taxes. The people claim that the priests are citizens just like everyone else, and if they are to benefit from the toil of the people, they should pay taxes like the people. The priests have hidden in their temple, but they have sent me a number of missives. They claim that their temple is apart from the state, well above it, and that to pay taxes would make them subservient to the state, when they should be subservient to none but the gods."
>>
>>29008189
I say we fix this here and now, the priests have an ultimatum, if they wish to be apart from the state they maintain and fund themselves, if not they can pay taxes...
I personally thing they should be on the same level, they are not gods they are but messengers, why should they be given a free pass?
>>
>>29008189
The God's don't need to pay taxes, the priests on the other hand do.

Very well, my lord. The temple priests will no longer be exempt from taxes, and shall be treated like regular citizens.

It is now midsummer. The people have much leisure time, and pursue many leisurely pursuits. A trend spreads like wildfire among the people: Music. Bards sprout up like weeds, and each one has a different style. Some favor slow, laboriously overdesigned ballads, others favor quick folk music, one strange bard paints his face like a clown and plays fast music where he seems to shout rather than sing. The Savna mostly play drums made from pulled buffalo leather, and your own folk often play stringed instruments such as lutes.

After a few weeks of the fad, fights begin to break out. The ballad players argue with the folk fiddlers over which form of music is best. The drummers, lutists, harpists, and the absurdly rich with Lyres all argue over which instrument is best. The arguments often devolve into physical fights, and after a particularly horrible spat which ended in a burned down taphouse, the arguments are dubbed ironically as "The Bard Wars."

The councillor comes to the senate the next day "My lords, these musical disagreements must be put to rest. If you decree, or subtly encourage one form of music above the others, i believe they will cease."

What sort of music is your culture known for?
>>
>>29008693
>What sort of music is your culture known for
Diversere orchestras
room for everyone
>>
>>29008693
Very good... I am glad they have taken to it without problem...
>>29008731
We seem to constantly be in the same mindset!
I say the music of our people shall be as diverse as we are! Instruments of all time playing to support each other, each is to help the others! It is like they will be a war band of music... So no war just the band!
>>
>>29008693
What if we attempt to encourage all styles of music. We could have a battle of the bands once each year, where everyone can play and the winner's form of music is the one that is top for that year.
We shall make a festival out of it and smoke the holy weed and drink the sacramental wine.

But let them know that any overt, not musical forms of fighting will not be permitted and will be punished. No burning down buildings, no fist fights, no nothing. Also, create laws so that people can sleep and we don't have music at all hours.
>>
>>29008693
Let us influence them in subtle ways to work together on large-scale performances. We shall call these large groups of varied performers Orchestras and we shall assure that they all perform as one cohesive and friendly group.

Now if you excuse me, I need to go forge a iron bow-tie.
>>
>>29008786
I seem to have misplaced my name. Ah well, tis why I am slightly mad after all.
>>
>>29008786
I see... This is interesting... Music by choice of the people! An astounding idea!
Agreed on the hours to be used... No music is to be played when the sun is not present!
Unless specified to happen on special occasions holidays festivals and such instruments are not to be used when the sun does not light the sky, allowing people peace to sleep!

Truly wise, my lords. We shall create a new midsummer festival, called the Battle of Bands, and whosoever wins this torney of the bards shall set the musical trend for the year. It encourages both diversity and focus at the same time!

The harvest has arrived.

My lords, our scouts and cartographers have created a new map of the continent. As you can see, the Kobolds have extended their sea patrols quite a bit, and the Orcs are slowly advancing on Shieldbrook.

The soldiers and boat captains are getting antsy. Those who had their children kidnapped by the kobolds years ago still complain to all who will hear them. Those who head off to settle the new farming village (which, by the by, needs a name!) mutter their fears of lizardfolk before heading off. The people who have famly members at Shieldbrook are melancholy, with visible fear for their kin.
>>
>>29008949
I propose that we start production of a palisade wall around the farming village, which I would also propose that we call Longfield, in honor of the fertility of it's land. I also propose that we assure those whose children were kidnapped that we will deal with the Kobolds after we take care of the orcs, who are the larger threat. Finally, I propose that we start drilling all of the soldiers at Shieldbrook in the most effective methods of defending a castle wall.
>>
>>29008949
Good good I think the festival needs a more fitting name... Do any of you have ideas for this?

Good good the orcs seem to be more pressing as with the kobolds... This year we shall go to war there is no option other than this now... I say we must load our ships with soldiers and do something preemptive...

We shall load boats with our men ready for war, and then send them across allong the shores through the kobold seas careful to avoid any attack... then to land and charge through to the orc city nearest us...

>>29009016
A noble name Personally I felt Ryersdale in honor of the grains to be grown and shipped from the place!
>>
>>29009062
Ryersdale is a splendid name, I change my vote for Longfield to this. I also throw my support behind the Pre-emptive strike on the condition that we first scout out the orcs and make sure that they are not in a position to attack us during our own attack.
>>
>>29009103
Agreed I was assuming scouting would be something we'd do either way... But it is good to make sure we have everything in place so we know what is happening...

"Wise indeed, my lords. I shall put together scouting parties to observe the Orcs, and plan a naval attack route." The councillor shuffles off to make arrangements.

The harvest passes, and winter comes swiftly.

The dwarven merchants arrive, pleased to see that you have created a dedicated farming community. This year, however, they did not send a token group of caravan guards.

One hundred dwarven legionaries, armed with tower shields and warhammers, have come as an honor guard for a dwarven general, named Urist Copperdrain.

"Senators of Greystream, I have come to you as per the terms of our alliance. My people mobilize for war against the vile Orcs. Our armies muster in the southern mountains, hidden from Orc outriders by the rocky highlands. We are pleased to see you have built a fortress in the low pass. It shall be the Anvil against which our hammer shall strike! I have brought this honor guard as a gift to your people in good faith, do utilize as you see fit! We have also forged for your people armor, and arms, from the finest of dwarven deep-Iron."
>>
>>29009346
Play them the song of our people as thanks
>>
>>29009346
(Side not, fuck yes we have a line and some to charge around it)

Also since the dwarves seem to know what is up with the orcs I say we share information on the green bastards...

Next off I say we send our most charismatic bardic diplomat as an emissary and an ambassador to them...

Next off I say we begin training with the dwarves as well increase our soldiers training against unmounted opponents... As well as training the dwarves in the opposite in how to fight mounted ones...
Lastly I say we send a small party bearing food gifts to the lizard folk to give a gift of food as an offering and to start out on somewhat of good terms... We need to broaden our horizons... Or at least find out what's on them...

It shall be so, my lords.

The heart of winter comes, though they Greystream winter is always mild.

The councillor comes before the senate. "My lords, I have troubling news. A number of...cults have popped up, meeting in cellars and barns in the dead of night. It is rumored they practice arcane magics of all sorts. As you know, all magic was illegal in the ancient homeland. The people have begun impromptu witch-hunts, though until now they have been non-violent, ostracizing or shunning the accused. Last night, however, A man accused of spellcraft was accosted in the street by a mob. He set three men ablaze before he was subdued by the crowd, who gagged him so he could cast no further magicks, and hung him from a support beam in the town square. This requires immediate action, my lords."

How will your nation treat arcane (non-necromantic) magic?
>>
>>29009481
This man has some great ideas that I think you should listen too while I nap to the sounds of those nice Lyres.
>>
>>29009638
Let all our population be tested for magic. If everyone able are properly trained it will be a massive boost to our society.
And if we legalize and control it, we will get rid of the cults
>>
>>29009638
Ah, you wake me up from my nap for some witches! Hang them a-Wait, well, maybe no. We have striven so far to be different from our homeland in many pursuits and why not in this way too? Arcane magic could greatly suit our needs with the incoming orcish horde and attack on the Kobolds, imagine what a few fireballs could do to a Kobold Warship! Asides, it is wrong in my opinion to ostracise and kill men and women for their natural abilities. I propose that we test all of the citizens in our population for magic, as well as actively encouraging those who have magical talent to come out of hiding. Then we legalize all magic-use outside of those of the Dark Arts and appoint a magic-user with great talent to teach the other magic-users control and mastery over their specific arts.

>>29009677
Basically this dude
>>
>>29009638
I say we create a guild! We shall build an academy for Magics that shall allow people to practice and hone their skills, they will make amazing soldiers as well as craftsmen... The academy will be funded by taxes... Any with the power to wield magics well shall be admitted and trained by those who know it.

>>29009677
(The irony of your title, magic was outlawed and the king has a wizard haha)

I agree people should somehow be tested, we will allow those with the gift to go where they like... People shall learn to accept them in time... We will create schools, healing, crafting, assistance, and war, people shall be given choice of where to go and we shall make sure they know how to use it and how well it is regulated...

If the one man burning three is a good representation of them in power... We need to hone thier power for good if one can burn three men while a mob attacks him, a mob protected by soldiers could surely burn orcs like the pig they are!
>>
>>29009767
This is a fine set of ideas and you should be proud of them, speaking of guilds. Can we establish a guild for napping, I desperately need membership of it.

"Wise indeed my lords. I now feel safe enough to come out of the proverbial closet: I myself am a wizard. I shall see to it that a Mages' Guild is put together as soon as possible, and shall set to test the populace."

The Dwarves and your mounted warriors train rigorously through the winter. The soldiers are now well manned by men trained in castle defense, who have taken to calling themselves the Dwarf-kin. After a few months, and the manipulation of the word by the accents of peasants, they come to be known as the Dwakin.

The Orcs advance, and their outriders finally discover your fortress. In response, the Orcs begin fortifying a camp in the southernmost corner of the desert.

The men you sent with gifts to the Lizardfolk return, and not alone. With them is a lizard, who is brought before the senate.

"Me Zzesk. Me come to talk. Me come to make trade and make sale. Me bring elf stock!" The councillor interrupts at this point, "My lords, the Lizard refers to the twenty chattle slaves he brought, elves, bound in reed rope."

"Yes, yes," Zzesk says, "Me sell Elf scum. Me trade. What you offer?"
>>
>>29009954
I would like to get some thoughts on this from the other council-members before I propose anything but I was thinking that we could form a allaince with the Lizard-Folk and attempt to get them to attack the Orcs with us. The more prongs that there are to the attack, the better we will be off during the attack itself. Concerning the Elf slaves....well, we already did slaughter one their captains for being abominations. Why not continue?

>Captcha: Soap Todsay. Hell no, no soap for me today.
>>
>>29009954
Hmmmm my brothers in the council how do we feel about this... This man seems to be of our type, slaves seems to be quite similar to our own beliefs... I think we should pay for the lot of slaves offering good nonperishable salted and smoked foods in exchange for half of them but pay for full in a token of good will to our scaled friends, any in objection?

Also to offer an alliance like with the dwarves that we war with the same as they do... Though I sense that we would be declaring war on the elves... Mind you we have killed one already... It seems to be biting us in the ass now is it not?
>>
>>29010125
It is decided in my opinion then. We shall give the Lizard-folk some of our food goods in exchange for the Elf Slaves. Now, what do you all humbly think on forming a alliance with them? The more scaly foots on the ground, the better.
>>
>>29010178
Fully agreed my friend if we have this much force crushing the orcs will be simple... I am only worried they may be allied with the orcs...

Also OP can we get a map update?
>>
>>29009954
>>29010125
Alright, unless any other council members object, I presume that the official course of action is trade some of our food goods for the twenty Elfish slaves as a sign of good-will. Then we are to negotiate a Military Alliance with the Lizard-Folk and ask that they assemble a army to attack the Orcs to the left side of their fortified camp. Also, lets inquire about any maps and buy them if he has them.
>>
>>29010260
>Also OP can we get a map update?

"Me take food, me leave elf scum." Zzesk says, nodding. "Me tell tribe, humans too weak to fight green-men and dead-men. Me tell tribe, profit in helping weak humans. Some tribes maybe help, some tribes maybe not. With lizards, nothing certain." With that, he leaves greystream.

And thus, I call the third meeting of the senate of the Free People of Greystream to an end.
