After much thought, you have decided to forget about books and balance and all that boring stuff, and just focus on turning your body into a perfect specimen of humanity! But of course, there is more than one way to skin a cat, as they say for some reason you're not entirely sure of. You need to choose a place to train and study. Will you go:

A) West, to the kingdom of Astora, to learn of horse and longsword
B) East across the sea, to learn the ways of the monks high upon the mountains
C) North to the forests, where the Rangers hunt and feast on the bounty of nature

It will take all the money you've saved up for this trip, but you have enough to board a ship to the eastern islands.

You depart before sunrise, stepping out of your house on a cold winter morning. Your parents and your baby sister, an innocent babe of only a year, come out to say their goodbyes. Your father hugs you, holding out to you a fine new fishing rod, which he made by hand for the day you set out to become a man. Your mother, tears in her eyes, kisses your cheek, and your sister holds out a crude crayon drawing. It depicts a set of freeform blobs, that vaguely resemble your family. You thank them all, and make your way to the docks. As you set sail for the east, you look back out to your home, and take in the image of your shrinking village as you drift out to sea.

It is nearly sunrise now. You didn't sleep well last night due to all the excitement of packing and preparing to leave. Perhaps you should get some rest now, or you could pass time some other way.

A) Have a nap below deck
B) Cast your line and lure to see if anything bites

You move about the boat, making small talk with the crew maintaining it. Most of them aren't very talkative, but you do learn a few interesting things about the voyage. It'll be nearly two months by sea even at top speed. Also, some of the crew seem worried about a happening on the islands, but none of them will let slip what it might be.

After, you wander below deck and see, along with the normal crew, a young man in red robes, pouring over a pile of odd scrolls and leather-bound notebooks. He seems to be deep in thought, and mutters to himself under his breath.

A) Ask him what he's doing
B) Go over and observe him

You decide to leave the man be, as he seems quite involved in what he's doing. You turn away from him and head to the cabin, to catch some shut eye while it's still warm enough to go without a blanket.

Later that day, just near sunset, you head back up to the upper deck and see that there are more crewmen up and about. This doesn't seem odd to you, except that they are being unusually silent.

At the bow of the ship, you see the same man in red robes. He seems to be looking out over the horizon, and reading a notebook by the little light remaining outside. Before you have a chance to turn the other way, he spots you and waves you over. As you approach, you realize that he smells a bit foul, almost like sulfur, and his face is smudged with ash. He extends his hand, stained black in places, and greets you with a smile.

"Hello! My name is Vicart!"

You tell him about yourself, from the fishing village you were born in, to the journey you want to make to the mountain temples, to learn the ways of the monks. He laughs,

You ask about what exactly a pyromancer is. He explains that they are mages who specialize in fire, the most basic but also most complex form of magic known to mortals. He waxes poetic about how to manipulate fire is to teeter on the edge of life and death, order and chaos. He seems very passionate about the subject, but confesses that in this day and age, masters of pyromancy are rare, as it is seen as a dark art at best, and at worst a violent study of killers and conquerors. You sympathize with him.

You then ask him about the details of the island.

"What? You mean you signed on for a trip like this and you don't know anything about the place you're headed?"

A) "I know a bit, just not everything."
B) "I just know that the monks there study fighting unarmed and with strange weapons."

Vicart laughs hardily at your answer. The two of you spend some time talking at the bow of the ship, exchanging anecdotes and learning about each other's lives. You find out that Vicart studied under an old mage with a habit of drinking, and that his love of the creature lead to him going up like a pile of dry leaves one day when he spilled a firebomb mixture on his own robes. You give your condolences, but Vicart waves them away, stating that mages are always aware that their practices are dangerous and deadly, and a mage who isn't prepared to see death and misfortune won't last long.

After the suns ets and the sky goes black ans starry, Vicart invites you down below for a drink and to have a look at something he's been working on. You feel pretty tired, as you didn't sleep long earlier.

You agree to drink with him, and the two of you head below deck. Vicart has quite a number of various trunks and other assorted cargo, to the point you wonder how he managed to get it all on board without help. He rummages through one of the trunks and produces a tall bottle of light brown something-or-other.

"It's nothing fancy, but it'll put you under the table as good as anything else."

He pours the bottle into two small wooden cups, and he two of you drink. It burns your throat going down. You've never had something this strong, not even the homemade wines that old men back in town brewed up in their backyards. After a cup or two, you more or less get used to it.

After about 4 cups, Vicart, nose red as a blushing rose, pulls out a beaten up notebook with a strange insignia on the cover. He tosses it over to your side of the table. It's bound in leather, and many of the pages seem like they're about to fall out.

A) Open it to the first page

You haphazardly flip through the pages 2 to 3 at a time, looking for anything interesting. Most of them are filled with the notes and jottings of a madman, but occasionally you see something legible. The book seems to detail some sort of method for manifesting flames, but the handwriting coupled with the sloppy organization makes it very hard to piece together. You hand the book back to Vicart.

A) Ask him what it's all about
B) Tell him it looks quite complicated

As you pass the notebook back to him, you ask Vicart what all the scribblings mean. He tucks it away in his robes, patting the outside of them after, in a sort of ritualistic way.

"As of right now they don't mean much of anything. But if I can finish them, I may have a method to generate flames fit for magic manipulation at any time, and in any place. These days, most pyromancers need a ready source of fire for their magic, but this research could change everything. In fact, the ingredients I'm looking for on this island may help me put together a device or composition to help with it."

A) Acknowledge his skill
B) Ask why it's so important if there are so few pyromancers
C) Offer to help him gather materials
>>

You compliment Vicart's ability to comprehend such nonsense, and ask him to pour you another drink. He laughs and does so, and the two of you spend another hour or so bleeding the bottle dry, before you're too tipsy to walk straight on the swaying ship. Vicart bids you good night and you head back to the cabin, and find the nearest hammock to the door that isn't occupied with with a foul smelling sailor. Your sleep that night is groggy, with oblong images of unfamiliar sights and people all about you. Whether this is due to the drink, or some other cause is uncertain, but upon waking in the morning you feel well rested and fit.

You stumble out onto the bright deck, rubbing your eyes and breathing into your hands to fight the mild chill. You spot Vicart at the bow of the ship again, looking out to the sunrise and jotting down more notes. He doesn't seem to have fared as well as you after the night of drinking, as he occasionally rubs his temples and heave a bit over the side of the ship.

A) Go up and greet him
B) Cast your line off the side of the ship for fun

You decide to let Vicart alone for now, and try to catch something off of the side of the ship. You don't expect much, since the ship is moving so fast, but it's fun to watch some of the larger fish try to chase down the lures from time to time. You go through your things, mostly some slight rations and camping gear, and pull out your rod. You head to the port side of the ship and set your lure, a silvery piece meant to attract fish to the surface, and cast off over the railing.

You sit in silence for quite some time, watching the lure flash and dance in the sunlight, just a half foot beneath the waves. After so many years on the sea, you've gotten quite used to simply staring and nodding off. Suddenly you see the line tug, as something catches onto your hook. It tugs hard at the line, and you are forced to grab hold of the rod before it goes flying off into the open water.

With all your strength, you attempt to reel in the monster tugging at your line. At first it seems as though you have the upper hand, but the more you fight, the more the thing on the other end fights back. Soon, one of the crew notices your struggle and comes over to help you, followed by another. The three of you tug hard, and let slack the line, trying desperately to win the war over the wooden railings. Finally, after one last great heave, the three of you collapse backward as the line and the thing on it burst from the blue sea and come flying up toward the deck.

You see coming toward you, a small and shining creature with green skin and fins on it's body. It's shape if vaguely human, but it possesses a large maw full of sharp teeth, and gasps for air as it hits the deck of the ship. You shuffle backward on your rear, trying to put distance between you and it as it rises to it's feet. You hear shouting all around the boat, as you see more of the creature's kind climb over the sides of the ship and begin hissing at the crew. The one you reeled in makes a slow gait toward you, hissing and snapping it's large jaws.

You aren't left waiting long, as it runs at you, webbed feet slapping the wooden floor. It tries to take a bite out of your forearm, but you backstep in time and it only catches the salty air in it's fangs.

It ignites quickly, and releases your leg, rolling about on the floor before slipping back into the sea. In the direction of the flame's origin you see Vicart, standing proudly with his hands ablaze. Though they are clearly alit, he seems to feel no pain from his extremities. You nod in thanks for his assistance, and turn back to the other two monsters. Thinking quickly and with little to lose, you lean in with the fishman on your shoulder and try to drive him into the charging one. Unable to lessen his momentum on the slippery floor, the charging fishman runs right into you and clamps down on his friend, causing him to cry out in pain and release his bite. You are now free, watching as the two fishmen tumble to the floor and rush to untangle themselves from one another.

You strike out at the cowering fishmen, striking one in the leg with a powerful thrust. The other sees this and panics, attempting to escape off of the side of the ship, but he is caught up in Vicart's flames before he gets very far. Together the two of you dispatch the remaining fishmen and revel in your victory. This celebration is cut short when you realize that you have very nearly set the boat on fire, and rush to extinguish the flames. Vicart holds them at bay as you fetch seawater to douse the,. The crew and captain chew you out for using fire so wildly, but they thank you all the same for helping to defend the ship.

The rest of the day goes by fairly quietly, as the crew works to right the damage wrought by the fishmen. Vicart himself heads back below deck, electing to retreat to his books rather than help clean up. You decide to:

With a long two months of travel ahead of you, you decide that there is no better time to begin your conditioning for the upcoming trials that will await you on the eastern islands. You put up your things in the cabin, strip down to your pants and begin training. You perform various exercises to build strength, such as lifting barrels, as well as practicing your agility by dashing from one end of the ship to the other. The days you spend resting are often full of drinking and joking with Vicart, and before the two months are up the both of you have drunk the ship dry of it's booze. Vicart offers to foot the cost of the drinks out of his own pocket, and with no money yourself you are forced to accept.

The two months passes by, through sun and rain, cold and heat. By the time you near shore, your physique has come along well, and your footwork and balance have improved tremendously. With the unwitting help of Vicart, you have even begun practicing a form of your own design, applying the swaying of the ship with your tipsiness from the drinks.

You have learned: 'Drunken Boxing'

Shore now approaches, and the crew prepares to land. Vicart is busy packing his things, and you say your goodbyes to the crew. The captain asks where you'll be heading off to now that you're nearly arrived.

A) Stone Fist Temple, masters of boxing
B) Golden Monkey Temple, masters of acrobatic combat
C) White Tiger Temple, masters of grappling
D) Black Snake Temple, masters of a thousand weapons

Upon hearing your answer, the captain laughs. You look at him, confused, as he wipes his tears and gathers himself.

"Ah, so you're going all the way up there on that silly mountain? Well, it's your decision I suppose. But if you're going to make that journey, I suggest you take find something sturdier than an old mop to use."

You descend the plank with Vicart and the crew. The two of you head toward the nearest tavern for a bite and drink before going your separate ways. Vicart toasts you, and wishes you luck on your quest.

You drink with Vicart a while longer, before the bottle runs dry and you two say your final goodbyes. You shake hands, sticky and stained, and turn in opposite ways on the road. As you walk away, you take short glances over your shoulder to see Vicart, and now and then you catch him doing the same. This continues until you are both out of sight.

That night, as you make camp, you look up to the sky and see that a storm is brewing right in your path. Should you continue on at your current pace, you'll be walking through harsh wind and rain. But something about that entices your adventurous spirit.

A) Delay until the storm passes. If you take ill now, you'll never make it.
B) Brave the storm. A little wind and rain isn't enough to hold you back.

With a fire in your belly, you decide to press on. The following morning, you pack your things and eat well, electing to spend the brisk morning by jogging to build up stamina. It isn't more than a few hours before the storm kicks in, just as expected. The winds shove you sideways, and the rain is like icy needles on your skin. Despite all this torment, you press on, determined to endure this force of nature.

That night you collapse from exhaustion and hunger, barely summoning the energy to unroll and slip into your bedroll before falling asleep. Though your body shivers and your throat is parched, somewhere inside you feel pride at your own tenacity.

After a few more days of travel, you run out of food. You didn't anticipate the eastern islands being so taxing on your appetite, but there's no point to worrying now. You are going to start getting hungry soon, and you should make a plan. A day from here is a farming village, but just beyond the hills you believe there might be a river. Going over the hills would delay your trip a day or two, and spring is only going to get rainier from here. Still following the river might be handy so long as it doesn't flood.

Sadly, after an entire day of searching, you find nothing. Two days later and two days hungrier, you arrive at the farming town, barely able to stand without swaying. You need something to eat and soon, or you aren't going to make it to the morning without collapsing.

you tell the woman that if she is to offer anything else to you, that you demand to repay her somehow. She smiles and agrees that you can pay her back once you've eaten a proper meal.

The inside of her home is fairly standard, with simple wooden features and furniture. There is a large backyard, that seems to have been left unkempt for years. The woman offers you a seat and a drink, as she goes to the kitchen to make up some food. The drink is some sort of hot, planty thing, bitter and unappealing, but it does seem to refresh you a bit so you swallow as much as you can in little sips. Eventually the woman returns with a large bowl full of rice and meat and vegetables, and tells you to help yourself. The dish is messy, but it gives your body everything it needs. You can feel your energy and passion returning with each bite. Once the bowl is empty, you thank her and ask about the payment. She tells you that what she needs done can wait until morning, and that you are free to sleep in her guest room tonight, and get started first thing in the morning.

A) Insist that you repay her tonight

You agree to spend the night here. After all, you won't come across many warm beds and hot meals on the way to the temple. She smiles brightly and goes off, asking you to wait while she readies the room. You drink a little more of the bitter stuff, even though it's gone cold now, as you wait. She returns and guides you to a small room in the corner of the house. The first thing you notice is that there is no bed, but merely a sort of think blanket with a small pillow on it. You think to ask her why she would have a guest room with no proper bed, but you don't want to seem picky when she's going so far out of her way. She invites you to get comfortable, and wishes you goodnight. You are left alone in the room.

You decide to have a quick look around the house before settling down. You first wander about the room, ears perked for any sign of the sound from earlier. Nothing. You then quietly open the door to your room, taking care not to make a single noise that may disturb the kind woman hosting you.

You step into the hall and tip-toe across the floor, examining the walls. There are various small paintings hanging here, which you assume to be friends and family. There is also a small stone idol in the shape of a rabbit, resting on a wooden pedestal. The rabbit appears to be made from some brittle, greenish stone. It looks almost as if it was shattered, and put back together with some sort of yellow adhesive. You hear a noise from back down the hall, and turn to see the old woman approaching you. She is wearing different clothes, likely for sleeping, and her hair has been let down. She asks why you're up and about so late.

You tell her that a strange noise disturbed you, but she doesn't seem to know what to say. You change the subject to the rabbit, and she explains that it's a simple idol meant to bestow good luck onto the household. The material is a precious substance only found on the eastern isles, and it is very delicate.

After a chat, you decide that nothing seems readily amiss, and say goodnight. Upon returning to your room, you lay down on the blanket, and find it to be surprisingly comfortable. You wrap yourself up and drift off. That night you see more blurred images, confused and churning in the dark. When you wake, as last time, you can't recall any of them. Just that they were there.

You hear a light knock at the door as you stir. The voice of the woman comes through, asking if she may enter.

You tell her that all is fine, and she opens the door, holding a tray. She steps lightly over to you and places it down by your bed. On it are small buns, some grilled meat, rice, and a more of that bitter drink from earlier. She says that once you've eaten, you can get started on your repayment, and leaves the room just as she came in. The food looks back at you, tempting you. You eat up, and even the bitter drink seems to taste less awful compared to last night. You then slip your boots and shirt on, and go to meet the woman outside.

She sits in the room looking out into the garden, where you talked and ate last night. When you enter she smiles, and asks if you're ready to repay her. You nod, and she asks you to remove your shirt.

You do so without much thought, and afterward she hands you a pair of leather gloves. You put them on, and she points to the garden. She asks that you pick every weed and straighten out the planters before dark. You don't suspect that it will be too impossible, given the amount of time, but you are slightly weary as you look at her and see her face reddening. Still, you hop down from the back porch and get to work, yanking the thorny plants from the ground and piling them up to be thrown away later. Some of them fight you quite valiantly, but your strength wins out in the end. She does gives you a short break around noon, pouring you more bitter drink and feeding you some small cookies, which to be honest are quite good.

After everything is done, the garden looks much nicer, and your back is so sore, you can barely stand straight. When you step back onto the porch, you look at the dining table and see an enormous spread of food, hot and ready to eat. She tells you that working so hard must build up a rabid appetite.

She stands and goes to ready the bath, leaving you alone with the cookies and bitter drink. Despite your full belly, you can't help but munch on a few more before she returns to tell you that the water is hot and ready.

Upon entering the bathroom, you notice that the only source of light seems to be various candles along the rim. Some of them are even stacked in ranks. It seems a bit odd, but you suppose you'd need to see yourself to clean properly, and don't question it. You undress and slip into the tub, feeling your muscles relax as soon as the heat takes effect. You tilt your head back and enjoy the soak for a while, contemplating the next leg of your journey. You suppose the wasted days are worth it if you got to eat and relax like this. After a while, you decide it's time to scrape all the dirt from the garden off of yourself. You see that the woman has set out some sort of odd, poofy log and some blue liquid, which after a regrettable taste test, you determine to be soap. Putting two and two together, you soap the poof log and use them to clean yourself up. The blue liquid lathers up well, and does an excellent job of getting the muck off of you.

As you clean, you notice something out of the corner of your eye. You glance over to the wall across from the tub and see a small hole in the wood. Looking more carefully, you realize that someone is watching you as you bathe. You stop for a moment, and think.

After a moment of thought, you stand in the tub and let the water roll off of you. You lather the poof well, and begin washing yourself again, but slowly, and more deliberately than before. You allow the lather to sit, slowly rolling down your body, which as you realize now, has become much more toned and built that just a few months ago. You suppose you should be flattered by having someone peep on you, but the whole situation still seems somewhat uncomfortable.

You do your best to seem sensual with your limited knowledge. At the end, you look clean, but still feel a little dirty. You dry off and wrap yourself in a towel, then head for your room to find a fresh set of clothes. Once in them, you hear a knock at the door again. The woman, voice slightly quivering, ask if the bath was enjoyable. You tell her it was quite nice, and she seems happy. The rest of the night, you think you hear an odd sort of noise in the other room, but you elect to simply ignore it for the hour or so it lasts, and just try to sleep.

The next morning, the woman sees you off with a smile and a meat filled bun. You thank her for her kindness and head on your way. You cross the town, greeting some of the townsfolk as you go. For some reason, many of the older women about town seem to take extra care to wave to you as you pass. Eventually you come to the town limits, as well as a large fork in the road. Both seem to lead to the place you need to be, but they lead through different places. The left heads toward a large forest, and seems to be quicker. The other, while longer, only passes through fields and hills.

You turn right, choosing to take the long route. The next few days are very dull in comparison to the previous. You simply spend the morning jogging, lunchtime resting, and the nights training. The hills make the trek quite tiring, but toward the end you can feel your stamina and endurance increasing. All in all, the walk takes about two weeks.

You come to a small town, likely only holding a few dozen people. As you enter, you notice things are very quiet, and there doesn't appear to be anyone around. You walk through the town, looking around for any sign of life. Then you hear a loud racket coming from one of the larger buildings, and watch as a man is sent backwards out of the front door, hitting the dirt with a thud. Another, much larger man emerges from the door, with a great frown on his face and his hands wrapped in ragged rope. The man on the floor finds his knees and begins begging for mercy from the larger man, but when he sees you, he begins to ask for your help.

You step between the two men and ask what the problem is. The kneeling man tries to back away, but the larger one glares at him, stopping him in his tracks. He then looks down at you.

"He owes me money. It's that simple. And since he can't pay up, I'm just going to beat his face in until I feel satisfied. Now if you don't back away, I'll split the difference between the both of you."

The kneeling man accuses the large man of being an extortionist, but he is silenced again by the large man's glare.

You attempt to reason with the large man, but he merely shrugs you off. You place a hand on his shoulder, attempting to get his attention and prevent him from approaching the kneeling man, but he merely casts his glance at you instead. However, seeing that you won't be intimidated as easily, he brings his fist back and takes a swing at you. You backstep and lean away, avoiding the blow, but now this has turned into a proper fight. You can see faces emerging from the windows of the buildings now, as curious onlookers watch the brawl.

The large man takes several more slow swings, and you dodge them, but you can tell he's only toying with you to lower your guard. After a few weak jabs, he digs his backfoot in and rushes at you, reaching his great hand out in a claw to grab you.

You deliver three successive uppercuts to his stomach and side, but the damage seems to be minimal, as he grabs you by the waist of your pants and hoists you in the air. For a moment, you are held up, high off of the ground. Then you are tossed forward, colliding with and crashing through a window. You hit the ground inside a house, rolling through a table and various odds and ends. You look up and see a family, frightened by your entrance. You Take along drink from the wine bottle, taunting him as he nears you. After, you wipe your mouth and offer him a sip as well. He sneers, and angrily rushes toward you. You take advantage of his bland rage and sidestep, bashing his face with the bottle, and shattering it. He falls and wiped his face, roaring in anger. When he turns back to you, you see that his face is covered in small cuts and blood.

He rushes at you again, but you maneuver your limber and booze-loosened body around his strikes. It isn't easy avoiding him, but you can see his face turning red with anger and embarrassment.

He drives you back toward a wall, and comes at you with a hard uppercut.

You raise your arms up to defend your face, taking the brunt of his assault to your gut. You are forced to bare the pain as he hammers blows into you, but luckily your training has toughened up your core well enough that the damage to your guts will be minimal.

When he begins to slow down from fatigue, you take the opportunity to strike back and shove him away from you to gain room. You begin to dance around one another again, but this time much slower. He hits the floor like a pile of stones, and you land clumsily on your hip. The booze dulls the pain, but you know that you'll still be sore in the morning. After you get up and dust yourself off, you go over to the large man to check on him. He still seems to be breathing, but he doesn't want to move, save for the occasional twitch.
