Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

You followed the trail of the robots through the tunnels they dug to attack you, and meandered into the Timorian Deep, the dark underground reaches of Venia. During a fight in the underground tunnels, Steward 001 - the robot you met so long ago - came to your aid. He held off his antagonist, 002, while you escaped out and into the ancient city of Va'ad, the home of the dwarves. Once there, you formed a plan with 001 to disable the city's power grid, thus weakening 002 to attack. The plan was successful, though you ended up chasing 002 nearly to the core of Venia itself before finally Erasing it.

In exploring the underside of the world, you discovered that the barrier of Order which keeps Chaos contained has been damaged. Chaos leaks from the Nether within in bubbles of energy, which then become demons upon reaching the surface. The crack in the barrier mirriors the great gulf known as the Lady's Finger. Vampiria and Archon both work from their respective cities to keep anything from escaping the Finger, but this process may be directly related to the greater problem of ever-increasing Chaos that threatens Venia's future.

For now, you must face the threat that faces you.

With Va'ad restored to the control of 001 and the other intelligences, you now have another powerful ally on your side: and they gathered together for a meeting. While skeptical of Yi Fang and the Black Lady, your allies have agreed to present a united front, though they'll be watching Fang, especially, for any sign of scheming. Abigail plans to keep him in check herself, while Auriel hopes to get him locked in a room with the Black Lady. Either way, you need him there to help cure Flint's parasite for good.

The next morning, you met with Fang himself, Duke Vellik, and Janus Miller in the city of Vischon. From there, you boarded a large river barge and now sail downriver toward Dobshire, the capital of Arland.

You stand on the top of the barge, watching the cliffs of the highlands float by. After a time, tou decide you have a bone to pick with Fang - but as you head for the stairs, you see him coming the other way.

<Archmage, a word.>

"More than happy to offer several," Fang says. "As I was looking for you as well."

<I see. Well...to start. Yong Xu?>

"Keep your friends close, Shadow," Fang says, "but keep your enemies closer. He was Abigail's main opposition. If he's here, he'll have no choice but to publicly support our new agenda of peace and harmony, especially in front of the others."

<Seemed like he was testing the limits back there.>

"Oh, he'll push and needle, I'm sure," Fang says. "But he won't cross the line. Otherwise, I'll kill him."

The words are said with a casual finality that leaves you with no doubt that Xu will in fact be murdered if he puts a toe out of line.

"Anyway," Fang drawls, "about the knight. As I said, I'll be personally helping to remove the parasite. I've seen it before, so I know how to remove it."

<You have? What were the circumstances?>

"Not important to the here and now," Fang says. "And before you ask, I never found out who was responsible. So that won't help. But splitting a demon in half so as to create a parasitic effect on one soul leading to another is not a simple feat. We will very likely be dealing with the same group."

<And so this may be a repeat of the first event.>

"Precisely," Fang says. "As Flint moves physically close to his...partner, shall we say, the Shel'kath's tail will diffuse like so much untraceable fog. You can think of it as a huge rope being piled up in one place. Impossible to pinpoint. But there's a way to deal with it, a simple weakness, in fact."

<And that is?>
>>
"Triangulation," Fang says simply. "We will determine the general location of the other end of the Shel'kath as close as is manageable. You will head in that direction. I will lead the knight around the general target location to three separate points. You follow the line of the tail..."

<And then we pinpoint exactly where the other half of the parasite is.>

"Indeed. Simple, but effective. Now...even then, it will be tough to get an exact location, because the other end will probably be hidden and obfuscated by any number of enchantments or charms. This will let us narrow it down to, oh, say, a few dozen feet, a room or so. But there's only so many men that can fit in a room."

<Is this along the lines of what happened last time?>

"Yes," Fang said. "Only last time, the person on the other end of the parasite had duplicated the 'tail' effect and we accidentally killed the wrong individual." He shrugs. "No real harm done, we got him in the end."

<...is it possible that the person carrying the Shel'kath isn't aware of it? Or that someone else put it on them?>

"The whole point is to suppress power in one individual and transfer it to another," Fang says. "I suppose it could be adapted somewhat...all spells can. But to not be aware of a rush of mana and energy, nor sense from where it was coming, would take a dunce of unparalleled proportions. Frankly, I don't like them, but the knight's family just isn't that stupid."

<I see. Well...at least we have a strategy.>

>con't
>>
"Yes. Now, as to the matter of the Black Lady."

<Yes?>

"She's a powerful card," Fang says. "As much a one as myself or Sandalphon. If we play her at the right time, we win the game. If we play her poorly, Arcturis will throw me out of the castle over which he claims ownership."

<Isn't it time to let the rebellion go?>

"My grandfather built that castle. His grandfather stabbed me in the back." Fang looks at you. "I'll allow the Flints some leeway, seeing as we have other problems."

<How generous of you.>

"My, snappy today, aren't we?" Fang says. "To the point. Contact me if you feel the time is right. Of course, I'll keep my own judgement as well, but I'll at least let you know about it before she walks in the door."

<I'd appreciate it.>

"Absolutely. Now then, I've got to talk about how to most effectively kill other human beings and their demonic servants in large-scale war with a certain fallen angel. If you'll excuse me."

Fang departs the top deck of the barge in search of Auriel. You decide to find the Duke, whom you haven't spoken with for some time.

>con't
>>
You find him on the lower level, toward the bow. The black-clad ruler of Kelvere is staring over the railing, watching the wood of the ship part the water in a little frothing wave of white.

<Duke Vellik.>

"Shadow," Vellik answers. He leans up off the railing and faces you. "It seems that you've built the alliance I spoke of so long ago. Although I would not have been mad enough to include Fang, let alone the Black Lady."

<I'd rather them allies than else.>

"I suppose I agreee with that."

<...you've been on the front lines. How are things?>

"Terrible," the Duke says. He turns back to the river. The highlands have been gone for some time, now, left behind in Vischon. Brown hills alternate with fallow farmland that lines the river. It's still too early for spring planting.

"The demons are barely kept in check by the Kanians," he continued. "Those they haven't killed, they've enslaved. We scrape and scratch with our raids, but haven't done any real damage, especially with the snow slowing us down. Mr. Janus Miller has been of great assistance, but without an army, my home is gone."

<And with one?>

"That remains to be seen," the Duke says. "Though I find that if it is possible, it will come about because of these efforts. I'm impressed, Shadow. Few could accomplish what you have." He looks back to you. "Everyone has your name on their lips. And you seem to know them all. You're at the center of this." Vellik stares at you for a long time.

"In any case," he adds, "I've spoken with the angel. I will favor your plan of distracting the greater forces with our own army, and striking at their core simultaneously. I would prefer to be with the army...but I'm flexible. In any case, I'm sure Arcturis will have quite a few things to say about whatever fighting does occur."

Do you ask Vellik anything specific?

Lord Arcturis Flint is the ruler of Arland and Donovan's father.

He was mostly spoken of last thread; he might have been mentioned once before. Donovan hates him.

There is also Gerald Flint, Donovan's oldest brother, who married Megan. He actively disliked and bullied Flint, though wasn't usually as physical as their father was in showing his displeasure.

Then Matthel Flint, the second oldest, who Donovan considers his only true brother. Matthel always defended him against his father and other brothers.

And Harvan Flint, the third oldest brother. He didn't dislike Flint, but couldn't respect him, and considered him the family runt and a general embarrassment along with Arcturis and Gerald.

Finally, Hemmelus, a powerful sage who can wield all four of the Greater Elements. He was a substitute when Flint found nothing in his own father, and was Flint's tutor in politics, history, and what little magic he's capable of.

Also ask Vellik how well his guerrilla war is going, if that didn't fall under the previous questions.
>>
<What can you tell me about the enemy forces?>

"Much," Vellik said. "If nothing else, we tried to gain as much intelligence as possible.

"Nearly 50,000 are stationed at Evinbrook. 40,000 of those are Kan-Abar soldiers. Another 10,000 are Kelveren, conscripted, or turned against us. There are about 3 to 4 demons for every soldier. In the worst case scenario, that gives them a force of nearly 250,000 just north of the border with Arland."

<...by the elements.>

"By the elements is right," Vellik said. "A force approaching that size hasn't been seen since the Shadow War, and frankly, Kan-Abar caught the world while it was just beginning to rearm itself. On top of those concerns, we have two demon lords commanding them...supposedly themselves commanded by Nulis. I very much doubt he has a strict control over his summons."

<I'd have to agree.>

"Indeed. I don't know what sort of garrison Kan-Abar itself has, but my spies report that the third demon lord is in the city, likely in a defensive posture."

<Any idea what they're planning?>

"I can guess," Vellik says. "They've spent all winter consolidating Kelvere, and they've done a good job of it. They'll strike at Vischon next. You might have noticed that the city was quite busy. That would be Fang preparing to defend himself. He's just as interested in the outcome of all this as anyone - don't let his casual attitude fool you. I'm sure he'd love to take a chunk of territory home after this is over."

<Oh, I know. That's why he jumped at the chance to be here.>

"You're learning," Vellik says. "That's good. In any case, after Vischon, they'll burn their way downriver straight into the heart Arland. After that - it's anyone's guess."

<What do you base this on?>

"Logic, and interception of some communication," Vellik says. "They'll use Arland as a staging ground to go after Archon, or perhaps start chewing into the Empire. In any case...that's all a distraction while they attempt to construct a Pentarch. They might have numbers, but it doesn't matter how many pawns you have if you're facing a flock of queens. Sandalphon would beat them down personally before they set foot in Rivermeet."

<How do you expect to be received in Arland?>

Vellik makes an ugly face. "With a smug attitude and four words: 'I told you so'. Arcturis and I have long been rivals. I'm sure he's cackling about my downfall, even with such forces on his border."

<Doesn't he understand the threat?>

"Oh, he understands it," Vellik says. "He just thinks the Ring City will rush in to save him at the opportune moment."

<What do you think?> you ask.

"I'm sure you'll remember what I told you before," Vellik says. "Sandalphon's long-term goal is to unite the world under the Light. He's not one to waste a good crisis. Yes, the Empire will sweep in to save Arland and Kelvere...and then they'll never leave. Obis will be happily restored to his throne, so long as he pays tribute for the rest of his life. Of course, Arcturis, fool he is, doesn't really give a damn, as long as he can be Prince Anoited of the Empire Territory of Dobshire. Idiot Arlanders. Wind for brains, the lot of them. He'll trade his sovereignty for an empty chalice. In a generation they'll be under the military dictate of the angels."

<Maybe we can get him to see that.>

"Good luck with that." Vellik chuckles somewhat. "No, you won't convince him. But if you can get his lords on your side, you might force him to go along with it. In any case, Arland is not our strength - we are. It is in standing up to the demons without the Empire that we make them irrelevant, Shadow. At the end of the day, if we must march without Arland, then so it is."

So - I'm thinking we ensure that the Battle for Vischon is a Fang victory if we can.

In the meanwhile, we should talk to Arcturus. A Fang victory would cause Sandalphon to remain at a standstill in the conflict, and perhaps let Arcturus know that the Ring City will not save him from every threat. Yi Fang could say some snarky comments to help underscore that fact.

You consider the Duke's words carefully. He's right, in the end - but he's also most interested in seeing Kelvere restored to his control. He might push for war whether or not you have a strong position.

At the same time, you need him on your side. He's sharply clever and knows world politics like the back of his hand. Staying in his good graces is important.

<I'll keep what you said in mind,> you say. <If it's true that Sandalphon is hanging back intentionally...>

"What other explanation can there be?" Vellik says. "If he truly wanted to, he could reach out and strike at the demon lords himself, with his angels, right now. He could have done it weeks ago. Why wait? Because he thinks that acting immediately won't give him the best possible position. He doesn't want to reach out only to have his hands cut by Archon or Vampiria. Ultimately, there are a limited number of angels. Each that dies is one that cannot be replaced. There's no Hyperion anymore, after all."

That thought hadn't occurred to you - that Sandalphon might not be holding back for advantage, but because he was afraid of a disadvantage. It gives you a certain sense of pride to be advancing your alliance where angels fear to tread.

<A few other things I wanted to mention...>

You give Vellik the vague details of your time on Xile, leaving out most of the important information - but hinting at possible advances in dwarven technology, including dynamos. His eyes light up like little gold orbs. He promises that he'll be speaking with Steward on the matter, and soon.

We're fighting two battles here - the political battle for alliance, and the second tactical battle with Sandalphon. We need to draw him into a position that is tactically weak if we can, and to do so requires a more thorough grasp of his psychology?

Fifthing Auriel for information about Ring City's general strategic disposition.

>>28976300
The whole point was that Abigail was doing that in the first place while we went ahead and tried improving relations between Archon/Vampiria. And that Auriel wanted to force their shipping, while we wanted to make sure she didn't try anything that would let Melody figure out we spilled the beans against her wishes.

>>28976307
Probably the fact that our small strike force plan depends on all our different forces being together in Arland to push against Kanian-Kelvere. Could be done from the great forest, but Arland has defensible borders and a fallback, so there's that.

>>
>>28976417
Hm.
SM let's ask Vellik about this viewpoint, with the logic linked in this post.
>>
>>28976367

Like I said above, I think our best bet is to use Sandy's neutral position and force Arcturus to join our coalition.

Fang takes Vischon and growls loudly that he is not to be trifled with. Sandalphon continues to sit on his ass until he can make out what will happen next. We're sitting with Arcturus and playing stupid about Yi Fang, and suggest that perhaps the alliance can offer him protection where the Ring City cannot.

If Arcturus is still being dumb, then we go to his minor lords and press our case with some ambitious youngsters.

Let's not forget that at some point, Flint's parasite will be removed and the Flint family traitor revealed - the political turmoil in Arland should make Arcturus more pliable, ESPECIALLY if Flint is now an ultra-badass and another son was the culprit. Our role in Donovan the Demon Slayer's return should be mentioned repeatedly.
>>
You recall that Sandalphon was self-righteous, but just.

Over time, the Empire of Light transformed into a dictatorship, step by step. It didn't happen overnight; less and less power was given to the people, and more and more placed in the hands of the Highest. It was more convenient that way; top-down rule was easier. Plague by what were legitimate threats from Archon, and unknown threats in Vampiria, the Empire continued to consolidate its power into fewer and fewer hands, until the entire nation was essentially run from the Ring City.

Sandalphon is not evil, but he is willing to do whatever is necessary to 'finish' the elementomachy in Hyperion's stead. Auriel woke up to the reality that the ends did not justify the means, and that they'd lost sight of what was truly important.

You briefly speak with Flint on the Windburn.

He tells you that the Windburn is a magical technique mastered by Sebastian Flint, Donovan's great grandfather and founder of Arland and leader of the revolution. Essentially, Flint's family is capable of taking temporary control of the Skysever itself. The friction generated in the air by turning the Wind against itself is powerful enough to ignite explosive force, though it can be sustained longer without going that far.

It is extremely draining, and demands several days of bed-ridden recovery after just a minute of actively using the spell. However, it can alternately devastate an enemy army or empower the user beyond human limits for a short time, potentially making the risk worth it. Flint's grandfather died during the Shadow War because of abuse of the Windburn. Having pushed the spell too far, his soul as vaporized by and added to the Skysever's blood magic.

The Windburn isn't quite blood magic itself, but it's in a hazy grey area. The threat of its power makes Arland a force to be reckoned with, alongside its formidable contingent of mage-knights.

What do you do now?

>talk to someone else
>to Dobshire

Well, shit. Yeah. Fuck Vellik thinking we don't need Arland for this. Windburn is OP.
>>
>>28976490

Well, this answers my questions.

Skip to Dobshire where we can make some early diplomancing efforts and hopefully cure Flint's parasite problem.

A "cured" Flint would be a huge, huge advantage for the coming conflict.

Does anyone else find it incredibly hilarious that Arcturus is the kind of person you'd expect to be serving directly under the jerkass wind elemental dragon? Though he has a different leash holder, everything about his attitude speaks of what we learned of Aelous' followers in Xile and before. It's like the descendents actually kept the culture.
>>
>>28976490
There was that stuff from before we could ask Vellik, but I don't really know how to broach the subject of his desperation.
>>
>>28976580

It's a tossup between Erebus and Aeolus for who was the biggest douchebag among the elementals.

My vote goes to Erebus because that guy at least had legitimate concerns about Chaos.

My guess is that Sandalphon is a staunch believer in the idea of Shadow = Evil. He was probably terrified that the free shadow mages would devastate the countryside of the Empire or worse join up with Vampiria and bolster the ranks of the Light's archenemy.

tl;dr Sandles is an extremist douchebag, but he still has some morality left in him.

Auriel clarifies your confusion.

The Sun Call can be easily shielded against by angels themselves.

Angels scattered in the city would be protecting the innocents from the collateral; the Shadow mages would all die. He was willing to sacrifice the physical city to ensure the shadow mages didn't escape. While it is likely that a lot of people would have died regardless, he's not insane.

>>28976754

Flint tells you that the subject of the Black Lady is best avoided around his family, and is unsure of what sort of terrible desperation you'd have to find yourselves in for Arcturis to accept her as an ally.

Sandlephon ordered the angels to protect the civilians; he was just going to blow up the city itself along with the shadow mages.

Remember that while it isn't now, Shadow was the evil side during the Elementomachy. Sandles is still operating on that bias, and from what Auriel has said, treachery by shadow mages in the past hasn't helped that prejudice.

SM, quick question. How many angels exist? Several thousand were present during the battle of Ring City, but more could be out and about in the Empire and on the front lines with Vampiria.

Erebus was pretty much evil. Hyperion was just a dick.
>>
The whole fact that we're a reincarnated Erebus thing and most of our closest friends know about it is a bit daunting... Pretty sure Arcturus would either laugh at the very idea of it, or something much worse.

Also, we didn't talk to Adavan, though he should be feeling pretty antsy. Hopefully he keeps in mind what we've said to him before about the Wind Key.

>for most of Shadowquest, Sir Flint has been 'Flint'. For the purposes of clarity going forward, he'll be referred to as Donovan
>besides, you're on a first-name basis
>apologies if I slip up, I've got 90 threads of habit at the moment

The boat slowly sails around a long bend in the river around a tall hill. Flint stares at the hill a moment, then takes a breath. "That's Sebastian's Stand! It's where he defeated - ah..."

"Me," Fang says gruffly. "Or rather, the three councilors that were attempting to defeat him."

Flint looks a Fang a moment. "It's strange to think you knew my great grandfather."

"Remember that when you think you've got the world all figured out."

Flint gestures at you. "Come on. We'll get a better view from up top."

You, Auriel, and Abigail follow Flint up the stairs. Several others come with you, and soon your group is clustered above the ship, lined up on the railing. You slowly meander around the mighty hill, and Dobshire comes into view.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exHDDZ4nq3o

A great castle sits over a wide floodplain extending at far as you can see. Sebastian's Stand is the highest point for miles and miles. To your right, two rivers meet - the Tairns, on which your barge sails, and the Kanian Feed. Between the fork of the rivers is a long town. "That's the Middling," Donovan says. "On account of its location between the two rivers."

<Seems logical.>

Donovan continues to point out locations as they come into view. The middling is north of the castle proper. The castle town itself is build on a huge island in just past where the two rivers meet; a wall lines the waterfront, which forms a natural moat. West of the rivers is a lowland called the Flooded Gardens; Flint tells you that is blossoms with every color of the rainbow during the spring, during the annual floods, and then more or less dries up for the summer.

>con't
>>
South of the castle island, on the mainland, is Dryfeld, the upper town of Dobshire which houses most of the merchants and well-to-do folk. West of Dryfeld is a series of small rises known as the Silent Hills. Three peaks in the middle are walled off. Donovan tells you that is the city's graveyard. A monument to Sebastian is located in its center.

The barge pulls up to the castle-side of the bridge connecting the Middling with the island. The bridge itself is an impressive construct, big enough for four horse-drawn carts abreast, and crossing over the largest part of the river where the two branches meet. The crew gingerly steers the barge into the docks build out from the walls. A huge portcullis is drawn up into the stone above the end of the bridge leading into the castle down. "Forkbridge," Donovan says. "And that's Forkbridge Gate. Trade from the whole north of Arland passes into the city every day."

And it's true. An unabated flow of traffic moves across the bridge, mostly wagons piled high with goods. Most ships moor up at docks near the middling, and then transfer their goods to land before crossing the bridge. Apparently that keeps a strict check on what goes in and out of the castle town's island.

At least, it was an unabated flow, until about ten minutes ago. When you sailed by, guards at the Middling side of the bridge stopped incoming wagons. Maybe to give you a clear path?

You glance up at Donovan. His hands are gripping the rail for dear life. His face looks like marble about to crack.

<...Donovan. Relax.>

"...that first wave of excitement is really starting to wear off," he mutters. "I don't want to be here. I don't want to be here."

"Hey," Auriel says. She puts her hand on his. "I'm right here."

"...and I thank the elements each day for that," Flint says to her.

A high voice shoots over the water.

"Ohhhhh!"

>con't
>>
""Working in the fields, I was working in the fields,
"Gotta work from sun to dusk to get my three square meals,
"Plant the hoe, scrape the dirt, rut another weed,
"Bend the knee and rub the earth and plant another seed.

"Ohhhhh~
"Farming is the life for me, yeah
"Farming is the life for meeee,

"Ain't nothing but the blue sky
"Ain't nothing but a pigsty
"Ain't nothing but sweat - "

"Boy, shut it! You'll embarrass us!"

"I was just singin' to pass the time, is all."

"You're a squire of one of Arland's sons. Act like it."

Abigail lifts her head up from the railing, her face on a swivel. "That's it! Those are the words to the song!"

The singing voice sounds familiar. Very familiar...

<Is that...?>

"That's Joey!" Donovan shouts. He bursts off the railing and scampers down the stairs of the ship. You exchange glances with Abigail and Auriel, then hurry off after him. Your entourage is a bit slower to bring up the rear, but they walk down the gangway and onto the stone docks of the river.

>Before you go into Arland, you need to decide how to present yourself.
>Who are you, exactly, in relation to your allies? This plan, though stated now, will have been agreed to by all parties.

Well, before we were going off as a a consultant of Fang of sorts who was involved/responsible for Haven happening. I think we should ditch the part about being the guy who did it and being Fang's consultant and more go for being one of Haven's leaders who primarily acts as a liason for Archon. That's mostly the truth anyway.

We should undersell ourselves I think. We are one of the mages liberated in the Ring City. It certainly wouldn't be a lie when it comes to truth spells, since we were imprisoned and released there. As for how we present ourselves, lets take a queue from fang. Radiate our power a little.

Ok, you'll be a representative of Haven, and liaison between them, Archon, and various other factions - John, for lack of any other name that everyone would agree to.

Do you openly admit yourself as having freed the 'slaves' in the Ring City?

Note that the fact that they were magical slaves was not popular knowledge. Recall: Ila's speech restrictions before she was freed.

And you check yourself over as you walk forward - but you're more or less in the same form you've been for some time.

You're John Nyx, a Shadow mage that escaped the Empire's grasp and sought refuge in Archon. You later made contact with Auriel, and participated in freeing the Shadow mages from their state as slaves. You now serve as an important figure in Haven, and a liaison between the many factions of the budding alliance.

As you approach the end of the docks, you see Joey once again, his arms wrapped around Donovan in a bear hug. You note a shining blue ribbon tied around Joey's right upper arm. Donovan is smiling warmly and mussing up his hair. "I'm glad to see you in one piece. How did you end up here?"

"Long story, Sir Flint."

"Well, you're going to have to tell me about it some time."

Donovan parts with Joey and faces the man at the head of a short column of soldiers. Donovan himself is a large man - well over six feet tall, barrel chested, and impressive in his adamantium half-plate and Xile cape.

But the man standing before him is even larger - an inch or two taller, and even more built. He's clad in ceremonial armor that seems to multiply his stature. His face is a mane of messy brown hair, from the curls down his head to the wide beard across his face. If he was an animal, he'd be a lion.

"...Donovan." The word is hesitant, deep.

Donovan has a strange look on his face as he stares at the man. "...Matthel."

>con't
>>
Matthel closes the distance in an instant. Arms like steel crossbeams grip Donovan in a hug worth of an elemental lord. "Elements damn it all, Donovan, I missed you to the Nether and back. By the Light, man!" He starts laughing, and it proves catching, because Donovan hugs him back and laughs too. By the end of it, they're both wiping water from their eyes - whether from how hard they're chuckling, or from sheer joy, you're not sure.

Matthel finally sets Donovan down and clasps his shoulder. "...you...seem different, Don. Taller."

"You seem just the same to me," Donovan says, grinning. "And I wouldn't have it any other way." He gestures to the side. "I owe some very important people introductions."

"Yes, you said you'd come with friends." Matthel's face takes in Auriel, and Abigail, then you. His smile fades quickly. "Friends of all stripes, apparently." You feel your contingent walk up behind you. Matthel's eyes widen. "...oh no. You didn't."

"...afraid I did."

Matthel closes his eyes and remains silent for a long time. He exhales. "...father...will not be pleased."

"Well..." Donovan clenches his fists. "He'll just have to get over it, unless he intends to turn them out."

"I'll...do my best with that," Matthel says. "But...excuse me. You said you had introductions to make."

"Indeed I do! You might know this one."

Matthel smiles, and bows deeply. "Highest. We have heard much...but it is good to see you."

Auriel nods politely, suddenly every inch the measured, glowing angel you remember. "Lord Flint. I'm glad that the brightest of Arland's brothers came to greet us."

>con't
>>
"You're too kind, Highest. I hope that the worst we've learned is but ugly rumor, and that the best has been terribly understated."

"That's not far from the truth, my lord. We have much to discuss. But onward."

"Yes, please. My men will attend to you." Auriel moves past Matthel, but stays to introduce Adavan, Ila, and you as fellow leaders in Haven. You yourself get an appraising look from Matthel. Donovan explains how you helped him back in Jacob's Field with the plague, and then assisted him defend the town from the Kanians, and then further helped defeat the demon lord. You were then introduced to Auriel through him, and the rest was history.

"Well, John," Matthel says, "you're apparently the accomplished sort. What happened at the Ring City is...a sensitive matter. But any friend of Donovan's is a friend of mine."

"No," Donovan says. "He's not my friend." The knight clasps your arm. "He is my trusted companion, and the best of men. I'd lay my life down for him, should he ask it."

Matthel is taken aback. You secretly rejoice, happy that Donovan would go that far for you in front of someone he respects and cares for. "...I see. You will be welcome in Arland, John. I'll see to that."

"I thank you for the hospitality, my lord. It is a gift I seldom receive."

"You are welcome to it."

You join Auriel, Adavan, and Ila in walking to a wider section of the dock near the wall, which allows the next guests to come up. Donovan stays to complete the chain of introductions. Auriel nods to you, smiling slightly. You must have done the right thing.

On a whim, you decide to check on Flint's parasite. Does it point into the city? You focus your gaze on him a moment...

It's distorted, just as Fang said. A cloud of spirit rests around the Shel'kath - the tail is gone, lost in interference.

Valeria Kavanere, Young Bull, Great Tree, and Vax Grak are next to greet. Matthel seems rather awed by the elven Lady, and pleasantly pleased with Great Tree's kindly words and warm smile. The war leader, Grak, seems impressed by Matthel's sheer size, if nothing else, though he limits himself to slightly-politer grunts of acknowledgement than usual. Matthel takes it in stride, however.

Then there comes Vellik, along with Janus miller, who the Duke introduces as 'an associate'. Matthel raises an eyebrow at Janus's mismatched enchanted clothing, but wisely decides not to comment. The Duke and Matthel himself exchange a curt, if not unfriendly greeting. Vellik offers to keep the worst of it until later, so as not to spoil the moment; Matthel thanks him for the discretion.

Next come Obis, Freja, and her father, Vidar Blackwater. There's a friendly clasping of wrists on all sides - Felnoir and Arland are friends, in the way that smaller nations that resist the encroachment of larger neighbors tend to be.

To Obis, Matthel bows deeply, and greets solemnly. He isn't surprised to see Obis - his being alive became public knowledge when he was 'rediscovered', back when he first met Sandalphon in Palthair. "Prince Vin. We last met...8 years past, at Gerald's birthday?"

Obis nods. "If memory serves."

"I wish we could join again in better circumstances."

"So do I, my Lord Flint. The fate of my people rests in this meeting. Nulis must be stopped."

"Yes," Matthel says. "For our sake, as well."

And then, the last group approaches. You brace yourself as the Archmage Yi Fang stops before Lord Matthel Flint, councilor Tae Wong to his left, councilor Yong Xu on his right.

Donovan clears his throat. "And...may I introduce to you, Archmage Yi Fang, of Archon. And Councilors Tae Wong, and Yong Xu, his trusted advisers and diplomatic representatives. And..." He gestures to where Abigail is tucked behind Fang, slightly out of sight. "Councilor Abigail Fang, the Archmage's niece."

Matthel ignores the latter parts of the introduction, because he's busy staring at Fang like a lion sizing up a steak. The Archmage can't match Donovan's stocky brother in height, but he has ten times the presence. You feel as though you could reach out and cut the tension with a hand.

Abigail sweeps around in front of her uncle, a smile like a sunbeam bright on her face. "My Lord Matthel Flint. It's an honor to meet you. Sir Flint has told me so much about you."

Matthel blinks, caught by surprise. He tears his gaze from Fang and looks at Abigail. "Ah...yes, of course. I...didn't know the Archmage had a niece."

>con't
>>
"Well, he can be a little protective," she says, playfully patting Fang's arm. Her face softens somewhat. "I know...that Arland and Archon have much history as enemies. Bad blood rests between us - there's no sense in ignoring it. But while the world stands at the edge of war, it also stands at the edge of friendship. I believe that this can be a moment to finally come together and put old grudges to rest. I pray my lord will help us do so."

Abigail's stream of enthusiam has Matthel on his toes. He can only nod. "I...find myself in agreement with her ladyship. Ah...or would you prefer to be addressed as councilor?"

Abigail grins at him. "I think Lady Fang has a certain ring to it, don't you?"

The hint of a blush grows on Matthel's cheeks. "Ah...indeed, my Lady Fang."

Abigail curtseys to him. "I look forward to speaking with you further."

"Likewise," Matthel says. His blush fades, and a smile starts to take him again. "No one will expect flowers from Archon, but it seems their most beautiful decided to show up in person. You might win hearts...and minds, yet."

Abigail covers her smirk with a hand, half-mockingly. "My lord is most flattering. I shall hope your words hold true."

She struts by him, and his gaze follows her as Fang and the other two councilors move behind in her wake, as if protected in a shield of beauty and good cheer. There's magic...and then there's magic.

Fang stops next to Vellik. The Duke glances up at him. "Your niece, hmm?"

Fang chuckles. "She's a chip off the old block."

"Of marriageable age...to secure an alliance?"

You feel a sudden terrible panic worm at the bottom of your stomach.

"No," Fang says.

That panic fades, but from the way Matthel looked at Abigail...well. You don't like it. Even if her flirting did work rather well.

"She's too much for any of these fools to handle," Fang adds. "I'd rather her for Xu, to secure a few...domestic interests."

Yong Xu? That conniving bastard?!

You try to banish the thoughts from your mind as Matthel leads the party up the walkway. The stone stair branches up from the flat of the docks. The high wall of the castle town rises up and up on your immediate left. You continue until you reach the gatehouse at the end of the Forkbridge.

You'd have time to speak with someone on the way up the stairs...

You work through the line until you reach Donovan, who is walking just behind Matthel at the front.

"Donovan," you mutter. "What do you know about political marriages?"

He raises an eyebrow at you. "Considering what they've done for me lately...I hate them. Why?"

"No reason. But I hate them too."

"...you're worried about Abby."

"Was it that obvious?"

"Yes."

"Oh."

Donovan holds a hand up to you. "And before you ask, yes, I'm...fine." He glances ahead to where Matthel leads the march up the stairs. "I'm just glad Matthel is on my side. And...I wouldn't worry about him and Abigail. You'd have to have a heart of stone to not give her a second look, you know."

"Well...she is..."

Donovan snorts. "Come on, out with it. She's pretty. Beautiful. Gorgeous. Hyperion-blessed tits?"

You snort slightly.

You exchange glances, then burst out laughing.

Auriel calls up from behind you. "What are you two getting on about?"

"Nothing, dearest," Donovan calls back. You glance behind you, and find a lot of smirks waiting. You catch Abigail's gaze. She smiles, then winks at you.

That really makes you feel a lot better.

When you turn back to the front, you see Matthel's glanced back at the two of you, half-smiling. He turns away quickly, though.

It isn't long before the stairs intersect with the bridge, and you all gather at one end of the gatehouse. You start to walk through the wide hole leading through the wall. The tunnel is almost twenty feet long - Dobshire is quite well protected. You find your vision rather blurred by the quick switch from afternoon sun to dark tunnel, but it clears quickly.

And you see something on the other end...

The warning of a short thread was true, unfortunately.

I've got a lot going on during Christmas, so thread frequency will be patchy for a bit, and I have a vacation coming up in the first half of January. See the twitter for times and updates.

Hopefully I can have a bit more prepared for next time, so the waits can be cut down somewhat. It's going to be heavily narrative for a bit as I describe the scene and all the characters, and dialogue always takes time to write. Nature of the beast.

And, of course, how would that make you feel SM?
>>
>>28979251
Did you always plan for Joey to show up here? I know some people were wondering if he was forgotten.

Abigail is doubled over laughing. Fang looks just as amused as his niece. Flint's face, crimson, is buried in his hands. Ila and Adavan are expressionless, though hints of smiles are twitching at their lips.

Auriel is seething.

"Shadow, what in the name of the fucking Light are you doing?"

You casually flip your hair. "I'm being faaaaabulous!"

Thanks for the run, SM!

I do believe we have our plan for infiltrating Kan-Abar.
>>
>>28979875
I think we should go female next time we're alone with Ila, as a reaction to her feelings.

"Why are you a woman now?"
<I thought it would be less awkward this way>
