>A girl stands before a tower, the sole landmark in a blighted field. Smoke can be seen wafting from a small hole near it's top. It is the only sign of life this tower gives.

The tower has been here for as long as I can remember and every morning it has stood watch over the land. My father told me tales of when it was first built. It had been a shining beacon for Strongwind, a sign of their wealth and prosperity. But the Overlord soon came in and took it for himself. None know where he came from but they are now all forced to pay tribute to the demon. Every year the people of Strongwind pay him with gold, crops, and livestock.
Tonight, I will slay the Overlord.

>The girl clutches her father's blade and enter the tower.
>It's entrance is unguarded, the Overlord did not deem it necessary.
>It's halls are vacant, the Overlord needs only his traps.
>And there are no torches to light your way, the Overlord does not see as others do.

But neither do I. My blade will light my way.
The once proud tower has been twisted by dark magic. The inside if far bigger than the outside and many of it's doors lead to a quick death.
Already there are branching paths with no obvious way up...
I can see three doors.

>Take the right door.
>Take the left door.
>Take the door in front of you.
>>
When in doubt, always go the right way.
>Take the right door
>>
>>28938131
>>Take the door in front of you.
>>
>The girl takes the right path. Hopefully it is the correct one.
>She opens the door and
>She suddenly feels very cold.
>She looks down to see several blades sticking out of her torso. Her armor has been sundered as though it were made of tissue paper. She feels no pain though, only a terrible pinching sensation. She barely has a chance to gasp before she slips into the void...

>And then wakes.

Ah!
Oh... I died.

>The girl stands and clutches a small necklace. One of it's many beads has shattered and turned into dust.

If not for this I would be dead for good.
That was a cheap trap. Instant death? At least give me a chance to figure it out...

>She steps into the tower once more, her sword lights the way. The same three doors appear.

>Take the right door. (No.)
>Take the left door.
>Take the door in front of you.
>>
>>28938131
>>Take the left door.
Left, always left.
>>
>>28938266
Widdershins won't do you.
Dead ahead - too true
>>
>>28938264
Always start left.

Left, left, right, straight, left, right, left. Works every time.
>>
>Forward it is.
>The girl opens the door in front of her. It reveals a simple spiral staircase. Up she goes, her bright blade held in front of her.

As handy as this blade is I wish I could make it -stop- glowing. There are moments where darkness would be more helpful than light. Still, it is all I have that can kill the Overlord.
Savior is the blade's name. It glows in the presence of true evil and cuts them particularly bad.
Whoever made it glow is a moron, though. Have they never heard of stealth?

>The staircase ends at a door. With no other options other than to backtrack she simply opens the door.
>She can smell old paper... Before her is a vast library filled wall to wall with books of all kinds. Scrolls lay about on tables haphazardly and expensive maps hang on the walls.

Oh my... This would be worth a small fortune in the right hands...

>Loot library.
>Continue forward.
>Go back.
>>
>>28938347
>>Continue forward.

Doesn't the sword have a sheath?
>>
>>28938347

Look around and loot. We might get something that can give us an edge on Demon-butt.
>>
>>28938347
>Whoever made it glow is a moron, though. Have they never heard of stealth?
Stealth is what evil uses.

To dispell the darkness you must bring light.
>>
>>28938347
>>Loot library.
But... not for gain. Seek knowledge that might aid you in your goal only.

There will be riches aplenty for all if the Overlord is defeated.
>>
>>28938362
It was sold years ago. The sheath was beautiful and made out of elvish metals and dwarven gems. They weren't terribly interested in the blade, it seems.

>>28938412
A good argument. Still, it would be nice if I could at least not shine as bright as a torch.

>>28938388
>>28938429
... It won't hurt to look. If there is anything like a Book of Slaying Overlords I will take it.

>The girl scans the library as she continues forward. Her eyes happen upon a scroll with golden writing and a red string. The parchment looks as expensive and there are arcane runs upon it. They read 'Scroll of Healing'.

This may be useful.

>The girl takes the scroll and packs it away. Nothing murders her so she continues.
>The next room is bare save for a door ahead and a single bronze statue. The statue is of a dragon crushing a dwarf beneath it's foot. The dwarf is smiling. There is a ruby embedded into the pedestal that the statue rests upon.
>Glowing runes shine below that.

>Go to next room.
>Read runes.
>Loot ruby.
>Go back.
>>
>>28938347

>>28938454

What, you've never heard of Grues?

There are adventurers I've known who would have KILLED for a glowing sword (and who occasionally died for lack of one).
>>
>>28938454
Why not wrap it in a cloak or something?
>>
>>28938497
because otherwise we can't see shit. In a tower filled with deadly deadly traps.

>>28938476
>>28938477
>>28938474

Well, I still have 34 beads left so...

>The girl reads the runes. They glow bright and there is a sudden flash. Searing pain burrows into the girl's body as her face is destroyed. It takes her a moment to die...

>She jumps awake, revived at the entrace of the door and with one less bead.

AAAAHH!
That hurt!
Also...
Those runes said 'Fuck you'
I'm going to murder this guy extra hard.

>>28938497
The light still bleeds through.

>>28938492
I will carry the Savior only as long as I need to...
Anyway, let us continue...

>She steps through the door. A spike is thrust into her body, piercing her heart.

D-dammit...

>She awakes at the start of the room once more. Another bead is broken.

Well, I'm out of ideas here...

>___
>>
>>28938506
Then we can't complain about the lack of stealth now, can we? Besides, who would we ambush?

>>

Aw come on Doll-face, don't we're all here for ya.

>>
>>28938545

>>28938555
Hmm...

>The girl ties a piece of rope around the door and with a hard tug she pulls it open. A spear materializes and stabs at where her heart would be. Of course, it misses.

Ha!

>She peers into the next room, holding her blade before her. In it she sees a laboratory. There are vials bubbling, machines venting out steam, and wires crisscrossing everywhere. There is a single door leading forward. There are signs that someone has been here recently...

I think I may be close...

The pain focuses on her eyes and she cries out in utter agony as she feels them tearing apart. Finally, the pain passes. She stands up and blinks a few times.

... Hey, I can see better now. I was worried I would just burst into flames.

>>28938664
Hmm... I will save destroying the place for later.
Onward.

>She opens the door and sees another staircase. After a moment of climbing she reaches a door that simply -looks- better than the others. This must be the final room...
>She opens the door, revealing a beautiful room. It looks comfortable, with a fireplace and expensive furniture. Sitting in the center of it is the Overlord. He looks over a book he's reading at Arva.

"I am impressed you made it pass my traps, young warrior. But your tale ends here. If you drop your blade and submit I will make you my servant. If you do not I will not end your life... I will trap your soul within a flask and keep you as a trinket."

"Hello, Overlord. I'm afraid I will not stand down... You will die by my blade!"

"You wield the Banisher of Darkness? I am impressed that you can hold such a thing." Flames engulf his hands and soon he is holding two flaming maces. Their tips are lined with white-hot spikes. It looks like it would hurt pretty bad to get hit with those... "Prepare to die, Savior's Keeper."

>But she doesn't use her senses anymore. An unseen force guides her and she easily dodges the attack. She strikes back, driving her blade into the Overlord once more. "Yes. There is Istur our artificer and Eluria our demonologist."

"Demonologist?"

"She is the one who summons demons from the portal here. It is how I was summoned. It is down the stairs and to the left. Istur created the traps and the laboratory. Is there anything else you wish to know, Overlord?"

no, no, no.

That's how the fucker's mind worked.

They killed us a number of times, they seem to be pretty effective against most people. Sure, they aren't the only defense, but they whittle down enemy numbers and force them to proceed slowly which gives us more time to prepare defenses.

If someone is actually invading our tower locks aren't going to stop them, and if they're coming in politely, considering we're Overlord of the tower, we can probably make it so they don't get gibbed by them.

Also, I don't feel like turning off -all- the traps just yet. I will, eventually, but for now let us simply get settled in, hmm?

"Hey, Where's Istur!?"

>The demoness simply points to a previously unseen door.

How did I not notice that...

>The new Overlord steps into the hidden door and sees a man wearing some sort of helm. He is busy working on a contraption that occasionally flashes with a bright light. When the door closes behind Arva he turns up and looks at her. He lifts the mask up revealing a refined face with a crop of white hair atop his head.

"... I sense that power has shifted to you. Tell me, did you slay the previous Overlord?"

"I did."

"Good. The man was growing fat and dull. We need someone sharp if this place is going to get any better. My name is Istur. Many years ago the last Overlord hired me to help him build this place. I have done as he wished but I have grown tired of making these silly traps..."

"Of course I can create more than just traps! I am the greatest builder in all the land! Not even the dwarves can match my abilities!" He takes a deep breath and calms down. "Forgive me. I can make more than traps. If you with, Overlord, I can craft you almost anything within reason. Engines of war, expansions to the tower, entire rooms of whatever you desire. I need only the money and other resources. I keep track of everything we have so if you desire something simply ask and I will tell you if we have enough. If we do not you can gather some yourself, have a minion gather it, or maybe demand it from Strongwind."

"But of course, Overlord." She smiles, revealing a mouth full of razor sharp teeth. It is a wonder she doesn't slice her tongue as she talks. "I am Eluria, keeper of the Black Gate. For you I can summon almost anything you desire. Whether it be grunts for manual labor or even some good company. The only price is whatever is needed to tempt the demons into our realm. For some it is as simple as food or gold. The stronger ones will require souls. Have you met Elvya yet? Cute little demon. To bind her to this realm took only the promise of escaping the Dark Realm. Simply tell me what it is you desire and I will try and summon them for you. I can also bring about demons of disaster. If you want an earthquake or a storm just ask." A list of costs of the most common summons would be good.

>>
>>28939740

"I could use a steward. Someone to deal with finances, make sure projects are on schedule, manage the estate and servants, that sort of thing. Also a butler would be nice. What would you suggest? And what would it cost me?"

"Those are simple but you need to be more specific." She flips through a large tome. "Hmm hmm... Elvya usually takes care of the boring things like schedules and stuff like that but if you need a more traditional servant... It would be quite easy to summon one. I could bring one out right now. We have the gold for it stashed away. Or, I could do it for much less gold if we had a body to sacrifice. The demon would simply take it over. Many would jump at the chance to do that."

"I will keep that in mind. I will probably not do any summoning right now but it's nice to know."

Ask how much gold we have stashed away. Also if we have any souls in storage.

Can you store souls for later? It'd be a lot easier to collect them en masse.

Ask if there's anything she personally would like in the tower. We may be in charge, but we're going to be working with her for a while, we may as well establish a solid working relationship.
>>
>As Arva walks out of the room a few more questions come to mind.

"Ah, there's a few more things I'd like to know..."

"Yes~?"

"How much gold and souls do we have?"

"You'll have to ask the little demon for exact amounts but as far as I can tell we are quite wealthy. As for souls we currently have 11 locked away. They don't spoil so we may use them as we please."

"Can you infuse things with demonic powers?"

"Of course."Her smile gets even wider. "It is a simple matter of summoning the demon and stripping it of it's powers. It still costs the same as summoning it, and perhaps a little extra for the ritual to transfer it's ability. I've done such things to myself many times."

"Okay. Does the power of the soul matter? Would a strong person's soul be more favored over a weak person's?"

"All that matters is that they are human~ Good, evil, strong, weak. None of those are very important unless you are trying to attract very specific demons."

"Understood. Now, is there anything that you, personally, would like to see added to the tower? I'm trying to make a list for everyone."

"Oh my... You certainly are more considerate than the old Overlord. I would like... A bath. A big bath, not the tiny excuse for one that we have. And a bigger portal, if possible... That would be nice."

"I'll see about getting that for you. Goodbye."

There is a single river running along the city and further into the forest. Eventually it will lead to Fellgrand and then split off. Strongwind 'used' to be a good city with a lot of trade but the previous Overlord put a stop to that. I need to change it. This is -my- city now and it needs to be perfect.

It will not cure old age but death from illness would work. She would die and then come back to life immediately.
If she simply died from her body failing naturally she would revive but then die instantly.

>also OP, when you running next?

Thanks for running.

What's Fellgrand like? Trade with them will be pretty easy considering the river so they'll likely be our main trading partners for a bit.

We can summon soldier demons to act as a town guard and to patrol the roads, right? Because the only crime we want around here is our taxes.

A list of common purchases would be useful, I like having a baseline to operate off of.

Also the resources around Strongwind would be good to know. We obviously have a good bit of lumber available, are there any mines or farms? Is there any artisanry this place is known for? Such as blacksmithing, glass blowing, stonecutting, or anything like that. We need to know how to market this place.

aaaaah, so many questions.
Fellgrand is a primarily human kingdom with a few elves scattered about. They had great relations with Strongwind but had to cut that off once the previous Overlord took control of the tower.

>We can summon soldier demons to act as a town guard and to patrol the roads, right? Because the only crime we want around here is our taxes.

Actually, the farther away things are from the Black Gate the weaker they get. For example, if Elvya walked all the way to Strongwind she would grow weaker and weaker before she simply vanished.

>A list of common purchases would be useful, I like having a baseline to operate off of.
>Strongwind Resources.

I will try to make a list of all of these before the next thread.

For now I must sleep. I really hope you guys enjoyed this and thanks for following!
>>
>>28940053
Ah, I should mention that the 'getting weak away from the black gate' thing only applies to demons that were summoned normally. If they were simply drained of their power and used to augment something or a sacrifice was used to give them a new body then they're fine.
>>
>>28939936

Getting a nice bath would be nice. We're the Overlord, we deserve some luxuries.

Also, our sword seems to only be special against evil, so we'll probably want to get some armor and another weapon, probably a sword, and upgrade them with demons.

We might not expect to be fighting, but it's a good just in case measure.

We'll want a place to meet dignitaries from other cities, and people within our city who want to bring something up with us.
