Last time on EDEN City Blues,
You are Sergeant Warrick Locke d’Angelo, MC1309018, on indefinite medical leave from UNAAF and today is the worst day of the month. As a mandatory part of the draft, you were given a neural implant to interface with communications. Yours doesn’t work properly, and the powers that be decided you make a better case study than a soldier. They gave you an apartment up in Beta, which you now share with an old friend, welfare stipends you spend on pain killers and hookers, no way back into the service, no way outside the walls of EDEN again, and nothing to do with your life.

You, wait a minute. Who the fuck let you in here? This is my gig, I wasn't told anything about letting you do this today.

...Interesting photos you've acquired...

ahem, right, one moment please
>>
Let's kick things off!
“Just what the hell do you think you’re doing you inconsiderate jerk? You’re destroying my city!” EVE roars in your head. “Do you even think about the repercussions of your actions? You aren’t taking any responsibility at all for all the shit you’re doing! You’re entangled in this shit whether you want it or not and it’s causing hell for everyone, me especially!”

“EVE, EVE please.”

“No, you listen to me for once. I’m stuck cleaning up your mess right now and you don’t even know what’s going on! There’s a rogue AI out there trying to incite a city wide rebellion all of its own accord, dragging the prole with him whether they want to or not, and he’s insulting the military and taunting them in order to make them respond in force, which they CLEARLY ARE. As I’m sure you’re aware since you’re busying having a small firefight on MY trains right now. And how the hell did that Roi bastard even steal one of my trains!”

“EVE, I’m being shot at, do you mind?” you ask as you fold the radiator fins back into the barrel of the ZEUS.

“Yes I do mind! I’ve been watching you the entire time and stayed quiet, but this is too far! Do you know how hard it is to repair footbridges when they’ve been bombed like that? Or how many people died when the train car fell? Seven! It was seven! It all started with a whore of course, it’s always whores with you, even up to Sarah who you hospitalized!”

“How was I supposed to know rats would fall out of the ceiling on us?”
>>
“I told you it was dangerous down in Gamma, but you went down there anyways, because Fenix told you you should so you would understand why he’s trying to start a god damned war! Something something apathy boo hoo and you’re twisted around his finger and dancing to his tune like a trained chimp,” she continues as you put a round through the front of a Kuzuri and crash it into a tower.

You sigh and flare the radiator fins. She’s not going to let you get a word in at this rate.

“So first you got a whore you didn’t know who was actually a mule for an invite to some shady ass simulation. If she wasn’t so uptight and embarrassed by it, she could probably get you arrested for it, but that’s beside the point because you dove into that sim like a rat finding a pile of corpses. And in there he just put the spooks on you, showing you a bunch of stuff from your past giving you a stupid fucking program and kicked you out with a migraine so bad you could barely stand!”

“I couldn’t stand actually. As you’ll recall I passed out on the floor?”
>>
“So you ran over to your friend Chase to tell him all about it during your check up, just like he wanted you to. Because the two men that were sent in to investigate this little ‘breach of security’ both wound up dead, putting you on the shit list. But while that was all going down, even when I told you this stuff was happening and you did NOTHING about it, you did fuck all but look around for people who might know him. You even made me let you release fucking spiders onto the Net and all the information you got out of that was that he’s using your servers as a proxy, which still didn’t tip you off that you were being set up!”

“Didn’t tip you off either,” you grumble as Roi crawls over to the wall to prop himself up. The bleeding has mostly stopped now that the foam as sealed the wounds.

“So you went and tried to find the people spreading these Twilight Keys, and instead of properly questioning them, or backtracing them, or anything productive, you just got in a fight with them and let them disconnect after knocking them senseless. Then you went playing fucking video games, bumming around in a ghost castle where you got a toy. Wait, sorry, you got a toy VOUCHER, not even anything real, and you wasted a shit load of time there, and you wasted HOURS in a space station game you hadn’t played before, only finding out that Fenix programmed it as a test, which you concluded nothing from of course. And spent the last of your powered hours fighting a losing battle in Somme, which you didn’t even win so it was just a massive waste of time!”

“EVE, why are you bitching at me for that? Did you have better ideas?”
>>
“You should have been able to come up with better plans when he was obviously up to something! But no, after that you went and got high in a strip club where you met Sarah of all people. High on weed you had no business being prescribed, it was POINT 5 not 5 kilos. So you got high and took her down to fucking Gamma of all places, bought a gun, which you didn’t even use when the sewer rats attacked, so now she has typhoid or something, the doctors can’t even identify the stupid thing, and while you were at least being polite and waiting to see her, you get arrested!”

“How was that my fault?” you ask as you send another slug at the kuzuris, but miss. Four still remain, but they aren’t close enough to fire on you.

“And now you’re in a firefight in the middle of my city, using high explosives, trashing expensive military drones, speeding along rails at sixty kilometers an hour,”

“Sixty? Fuck, we fast now.”

“Destroying infrastructure, killing civilians,”

“He did that, not me.”
“And playing into his plan, making his damn day!” she shouts at you as you snap the fins back down and curl around to take another shot at a kuzuri. The slug rips out of the barrel, taking the leg off of one of the kuzuri, but not stopping it.

When she doesn’t say any more, you venture to respond, “You done yelling at me now? I’m kind of about to be killed. And I could use some help.”

“It’s not like I want to help you, dumbass.”
>>
Okay, she's gone for now.

Sorry about that, I would have, shall we say parsed? that a bit for you, but anyways.

You are flying along the train rails somewhere in Beta right now, and you're being chased by four kuzuri, those crazy hunter killer drones. You have a few shots left with your ZEUS sniper rifle, hand guns, and a grenade launcher, all to buy you enough time until you can grab a city board and take to the rails yourself and escape.

General Chase made you swallow some pill for insurance of some sort, but for now you're with the resistance, or rather they're bailing you out of jail by force, but the guy got shot to hell and back by a kuzuri because he was dangling out the back like a lunatic.

If you fall here, it's sixty meters to the concrete ground, and the train ends in military territory.

>How do you proceed?

>>
“Hey, Roi,” you ask as you duck back into cover, the heat from the fins rising into the air. “Where’s the end goal here? A safehouse or something.”

“We just have to get into a blackout. There aren’t many of them up here in Beta, but if we drop down to Delta, we’ll find one quick enough. Get in the black out and the kuzuri won’t be able to track us and they’ll pull back. Trains’ll stop too though, even if we’re on boards.”

“You mean to say you have safehouses everywhere?”

“Some larger than others,” he says with a grunt of pain. “But yeah. We can hide at least temporarily in any tower.”

“So, what? Going to tower skip until we get all the way out of the city?” you ask as you snap the fins back down. Only five shots left.

“Nah, you have to stay for the show. This has all been the opening act, setting the stage. Wasn’t in anyone’s plans to have things escalate this far before the concert. You make damn good bait though. When you’re ready, your board is in the bottom of the grenade launcher box. I’ll follow behind.

>Thin the herd some more. Four is too many to be safe trying to run from.
>Go now. If they’re dropping back then it means other kuzuri are in wait.
>Stay in the train. It’s safer to do a quick drop out than a prolonged escape

As a reminder

There is no legal private transportation in EDEN aside from walking. If you need to get from point A to point B, you walk or take a train.

Many inhabitants have taken to the use of magnetic devices colloquially known as cityboards, to make use of the automatic alteration of magnetic field between the rails that the trains use. Strap one on your feet, jump on the magnetic cushion, and fly.

The magnets also allow you to latch onto power cords, walkways, walls, trains, and just about everything else in EDEN, allowing for maneuverability arguably greater than even a kuzuri, if you can stomach flying around dozens of meters above the ground with absolutely no safety gear.
>>
>>28928982
> Strap one on your feet, jump on the magnetic cushion, and fly.
I suppose it must also come with additional suspension and stabilization technologies, preventing our feet from simply kicking out from under us and smashing our head on the floor (or legs simply just ripping from our body via magnetic force).

Can we board on walls or even ceilings provided they are magnetized?

>I suppose it must also come with additional suspension and stabilization technologies, preventing our feet from simply kicking out from under us and smashing our head on the floor (or legs simply just ripping from our body via magnetic force).

That comes with technique and style, but the rails detect how fast you're moving and compensate to accelerate you properly. Wouldn't want to rip trains in half after all.

Almost everything around you is made from steel, some of the lower structures are concrete reinforced with steel, but most boarders ride high. So, if you jump off the rails and smack your board onto the side of a tower, you can grind down the side, jump off a window, and land on a different rail going a different direction. There are as many paths as there are things, you choose your own path and no one else has any say

“Alright, well, we’re getting distance between us and them right now, so I’m going to wait this out best I can before we bail. That sound good to you?” you ask as you crawl over to the grenade launcher box and rip the foam out to reveal the metal cityboard beneath. The circuitry and magnets on the bottom are nothing special, not some kind of designer board made by a Gamma savant craftsman or something, but it’ll get you around.

“You’re the one with the gun, if you want to sit it out for a bit, I’m all for waiting and not moving. That said though, I’m going to need a doctor when this is over,” Roi responds as you slide back to the end of the train to watch the kuzuri.

“I’d be concerned if you didn’t need a doctor right now. Only CZARheads shrug off those kinds of wounds. Them and the dead,” you comment. Looking down the scope of the ZEUS and accounting for relative speeds, the kuzuri are out of range and falling back. Firing now would be a waste of bullets and dangerous to everything behind them.

You lower your aim and look out over the city. Wind is rushing past you, whipping against the edge of the train. The lights around you are blurring past above and below you as the towers stream past. From what little you can recognize, you seem to be closing in on the headquarters of the Military Police.

Then the train shakes slightly, and you hear the ripping of metal come from the front of the train. You turn around to stare at the door leading forward.

“Now what do you think that is…” Roi comments as he slides over to you.

>How do you proceed.
>>
>>28929205
Could we conceivably get out on our board, take a look at the head of our train, and head back in without drawing undo attention or danger?
>>
>>28929278
getting on your board would entail falling back, so you'd be behind the train, and thus unable to see the front of it.

The rails are less wide than the train, and you have to ride the middle.

Climbing on the train is an option, as if it were a traditional train

“Whatever it is, it’s at the front of the train, and we’re at the back. We’re travelling a hell of a lot faster in here than we would out there, so yeah,” you comment as you sling the ZEUS over your shoulders properly.

“You can say that, but I’m getting my board on,” Roi responds as he pulls his citybaord off his back and tosses it down to his feet. You nod and do the same. You both start fastening yoru boards to your feet, locking them onto your shoes, and you wait.

Just as you snap the last lock down on your feet, the thing smashes through the doors of a train car ahead of you. You can hear the glass shatter, and glancing out the back you see the rent doors tumble down to Gamma as debris.

“That’s bad.”

“Agreed.”

“Time to bail?”

You can feel the train bob slightly from its weight as the thing moves.

It's been a while since I've explained the dice mechanics

All rolls are the highest of 3d100, including those for the enemy, and you subtract your modifier from them. The lower of the two rolls succeeds. Ties are ties.

So you had a modifier of 20 for cityboarding, and your highest roll was a 97, thus you got a 77

His modifier was 30, and his highest roll was a 44, so he got a 14

He did just fine, you did terribly

Some day these rules may change slightly, but only in certain circumstances
>>
>>28929873
but if >>28929818 highest roll is 82 - 20 that gives a 62.

Is that good or bad?
>>

77 is very bad. It might be the worst roll I've seen, but there are no crits in this system.

When you're in the Net, you regularly get a 0 for your roll

“Time to bail,” you confirm as you jump to your feet. Your board activates and locks you down to the base of the train. As you stare in surprise at your predicament, Roi grabs the handle of the door and uses it to throw himself out the back, landing neatly on the cushion and keeping pace with the train despite his injuries.

“Come on you scrub, it’s like you don’t even cityboard,” he yells through the wind to you as you try to deactivate your board and move to the back door.

“Fuck off, I just have better things to do with my life,” you shout back as you inch towards the back.

“Like what?”

“Fuck you, that’s what,” you respond. You reach the back of the train just as the next set of doors get smashed apart. Looking over your shoulder, you can see through the windows to the train ahead of you. A large kuzuri covered in heavy armor is forcing its way through the train to you, destroying the entire thing in the process.

Then you’re falling out the back. You swing your arms through the air, flailing and trying to catch your balance but it’s too late. The board detaches from the train. You shout in surprise as the world inverts. Something yanks on your feet, grabbing you as your shirt falls over your head, whipping against you in the wind.

You can hear Roi laughing until he whimpers in pain.

You growl and thrash with your shirt, the fashionable design simply getting in the way. Quick enough you rip it off and throw it aside. You take a moment to consider the fact that you haven’t showered or even changed in about two days now, part of which was spent in prison.

You shake your head and begin rocking back and forth on your board before you tuck and flip upright, one of your shoulders brushes the near rail on the way up, but you manage to catch your balance, and keep your ZEUS. Tilting your board back, you rise up on the pad a bit and slow down with Roi.

Roi whistles behind you. “Look at you, trying to be all sexy and shit when your skin hasn’t seen light in years.” You turn around to glare at him as he chuckles. The kuzuri in the train rips through the last door between you and it. “Unless you think you can shoot it from here, without ending up like me, time to bail,” he says before pulling the nose of his board up, peeling off to the side, twisting and jumping off the rail. He latches onto the nearby tower and starts grinding down the side of it, leaving you behind.

A word on the layout of the rails, for those that don't know

There are three directions of rails, RED runs SW to NE, Green runs NW to SE, Blue runs W to E and of course back. The towers they run between are arranged in a simple honeycomb, so the three rail lines can go straight between the rails without stopping until the very end of EDEN. Occaisionally, the rail will diverge and ramp up or down. Aside from getting off and taking stairs or a lift, these are your only opportunities to gain height. Going down is far easier, as the train is always relatively close to towers which you can latch on to. Hanging across the rails are foot bridges, semi-holographic billboards (which many cityboarders make a habit of diving through whenever they key), and the occasional illegal overhang.

All of these things are regular and repeating. If you look for one of them, it's just a short span of time until you find one.

The only real danger is having a train catch up with you, and changing directions at high speeds.
>>
>59 you
>29 Roi

You shake your head at the kuzuri as it takes aim at you, and you lean over with your board. The magnetic field quickly repel you to the side and you ollie off the side. Your board slaps onto the side of the tower, cracking a nearby window. You can see office workers staring in disbelief at you as you grind past, the magnets unable to hold your weight on their own. Their amazement switches to fear as the kuzuri starts shooting at you, but its aiming solution is just a bit too slow to keep up with you as you grind down the side of the tower.

Just before the side of the tower gives way to the station gap below, filled with dozens of onlookers, you jump off, flipping backwards gracefully, and twist around to land on the rail beneath. The drop was a bit high, an intermediate grind along a billboard, or a power cord or something, would have helped slow you down. Regardless, you didn’t have enough speed to push through the field and quickly bounce back up on top. You dance your board from side to side until you catch the middle and take off, tucking it behind yourself.

Ahead of you, you can see the Blue junction, and Roi seems intent on joining it. The only problem, is the kuzuri are crawling down like flies to get to you, and you’re headed right for them.

There are a few alleys and walks that you could get off on. You might be able to take a shot or two at them while they’re still at distance. If you speed up, you can get on Blue and get around a tower before they can resolve a firing solution on you. Or you could go lower to Gamma somehow. Or perhaps another track is available to you.

You swear and shake your head. Rather than face the kuzuri, you take note of where he turned off and jump off the rails and latch onto a tower. You slide down the side for a moment before jumping off and hitting foot bridge, grinding down the rail. Before it ends in the wall, you jump off again, planting your board against the wall, but it’s almost entirely SMARTglass. Your impact sends a net of cracks across the pane, but the thing holds long enough for you to push off and hit the rail beneath you.

Before you can start accelerating again, the window shatters. A mess of bodies spill out from it in a tangled grapple, tumbling end over end around the rails, but mostly along an unassuming detour down, to Epsilon level. If you were to go down there, you could easily escape the kuzuri, and could surface anywhere in EDEN.

Then you hear the horn of a train. Behind you, a maglev train is hurtling up to you, and ahead of you is the station it’s trying to stop at, with a train already stopped there.

There is too much in the way between you and the kuzuri for them to fire on you.

Pressed to get away from the trains, you turn your board and jump off the rail. You attempt to hit the remaining window pain and jump off it to reach the bridge down to the bar, but your board slips. Rather than pushing off, your legs shoot down and you slam your chest against the pain. You shout and scramble, but quickly fall from the wall and tumble down below the rails, onto a thin concrete room. You can see the aluminum sheets scrapped together beneath the concrete flexing from your weight, ready to give out.

The smell of alcohol is strong around you. Very near to you are the four men that fell out of the window, still engaged in their brawl. One is armed with a broken bottle, another has as stun gun sparking in his hand. They’re blocking your path to the Epsilon ramp, although you do have a handgun.

You almost get knocked over from the rush of air accompanying the train as it tries to reverse the magnetic fields and slow itself before ramming into the standing train. The whole machine is passing within centimeters of your head, but you managed to land clear of it. Soon enough the two trains should depart the station with little fuss.

The kuzuri will be looking for you.

>They're all armed and trying to kill one another
>Get caught between two trains
>Hunter killer drones have been dispatched to deal with the incursion

Tell the drunk guys the kuzuri said their mom was a whore?

I normally encourage these kinds of plans

But you'd be the only fool if you tried to get them to fight a kuzuri with melee weapons.

Maybe they're so drunk and busy with their brawl, they won't mind us sneaking around them.

I suppose that'll be a speed check

They might be able to drag you into this fight accidentally

You have a speed of 25 at the moment

Maneuvering as best you can while not touching the train, you reach down and disable your cityboard and remove it from your feet. As the train finally comes to a stop, you scoop it up under your arm and get to your feet. The drunks are still trying to kill one another more or less, but they’re focused on each other, not on you. While their attentions are all on one man screaming in agony as he has the stun gun slammed into his neck, you run past them.

You jump up on the rails sloping down to the depths of Epsilon. The dark corners and tunnels of EDEN’s infrastructure awaits you, but the kuzuri are at your heels. “Better not be any fucking rats,” you whisper as you start running down the rails.

Communications get blocked off, lights disappear, and isolation welcomes you in the pits beneath hell.

I think that's as far as I'm going to bring the tale of Warrick tonight. Going to at least take a break to recharge, might resume with a perspective shift.

Thoughts?

The recap was a good idea, great way to bring in more players though it is possible you could generalize it to reflect a more overarching history.

That said, thanks for running.

Next recap will probably be in the vein of a Gurren Lagann recap

THIS IS THE TALE OF A MAN WHO ROSE UP FROM THE DEPTHS OF EDEN. HE TOOK IT IN HIS OWN HANDS TO FORGE HIMSELF A FUTURE IN THE LANDS BEYOND THE WALLS, AS A SOLDIER. BUT DEFEAT FOUND HIM, AND HE WAS CRIPPLED BY HIS BEST FRIEND.

and so on
>>
I think next quest will start with a [REDACTED] medical report on Warrick to cover the technical details, good idea?
