You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Time to party time!

Agnes has just left to get something to eat, leaving you alone with the Princess... well, not exactly "alone," so much as "slightly segregated from the crowd of nobility."

Let's see how long that'll last.

>Congratulations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>Though dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

"She's pretty nice, huh?" you say, turning to the Princess.
"Yes... and surprisingly sharp, too," Marianne replies.
"She certainly is," you say with a chuckle. "...though I suppose my life -does- sound kind of convenient, doesn't it..."
"It did at first... but then you went and told me the details, and now I'd have to say that it's the exact opposite," she replies, a sad look in her eyes. "Just look at your current situation as a happy ending to all the horrible things that happened before."

That's definitely one way to look at it...

"Anyways, I'm glad that the two of you seem to have hit it off," you say, looking up at the ceiling.
"Yes... I wouldn't mind talking with her some more," Marianne replies. "Among other things, I'd like to tell her about some of the stupid things you've done over the past few weeks," she says, smirking at you.
"I'd kind of like it if you wouldn't completely ruin her image of me," you reply with a chuckle.
"What, doesn't your grandmother deserve to know the real you?"

Unfortunately, your little back-and-forth is interrupted by the same would-be suitors from before, who appear to have regained their nerve now that Agnes isn't in the immediate vicinity.

"Princess, are you done speaking with your friend?" one young man asks.
"Not that we're trying to intrude..." another says.
"Very well..." Marianne says with an exasperated sigh, "if you absolutely insist."

That seems to be your cue to leave, and the crowd of boys seemingly closes up behind you as you back away from Marianne. Though she's put back on her previous blank expression, she nods at you to signify that she'll be alright.

...for now, anyways.

I'm sure this isn't a popular opinion, but, in all seriousness, if/when we see Monique, we must apologize sincerely for destroying his grandfather's sword, since we know we would be devastated if the one we were left was broken. We don't apologize for beating him in the tournament, or getting this job instead of him, or punching him across the room for saying awful things about our friend. But we will concede that one thing we did wasn't nice, and had we known, we wouldn't have done it.

Just because Monique has been a douche around Reinhold doesn't mean we should completely exempt him from our nauseating niceness 100% of the time.

Seeing as how Agnes is here, you ought to find Citrine so that she can introduce him to Marius. Scanning the crowded hall for any sign of her, you notice that the crowd's a lot thicker on one side of the room.

Considering that Marius's art is really popular among these guys, maybe they're making a big fuss over him? Might as well check it out...

It becomes increasingly hard to maneuver as you get closer, especially while keeping the Princess within your field of vision. It's all you can do to keep from bumping into anyone...

...and then some asshole decides to bump into -you-.

Or rather, you find yourself shoved out of the way by an obese woman in a dress that's far too elaborate for... ANYONE to be wearing.

"...exCUSE me!" she scoffs as she pushes her way through the crowd... and knocks you off your feet.

Just as it's looking like you're going to hit the floor, you find yourself someone holding you up by both shoulders.

"Don't say that I didn't warn you about... -things- like that, buddy," a male voice says as you're helped to your feet.
"Hm? Who's..." you say as you turn to see who just helped you out. "...Lord Girardot?"

>how do you respond?
>>
>>28925852

"Thanks for the save again," you say. "You have pretty good timing."
"I do hear that a lot," Lord Girardot replies with a chuckle. "The wife and I are on our way to the buffet table, but it's getting kind of hard to get there," he sighs.
"Pleased to meet you," a cute girl with short black hair and a frilly white and beige-colored dress says to you. "Are you one of my husband's friends?"

"No, I've just run into him a couple of times," you reply with a tired laugh.
"You know how it is with most of the jackasses here," Girardot says to his wife. "Little regard for others and all that."
"Yes... I do wish the nobles from our country would act more... noble," she replies, sighing.

"You two are from... Perricone, was it?" you ask.
"Yes, though I'm a rather recent addition to the nobility," Lord Girardot replies. "Makes certain people jealous... though I honestly don't give a damn what they think," he shrugs. "And my position allowed me to marry this lovely young lady here, so I'm rather attached to it now."
"C'mon, not in front of other people..." his wife says, blushing.

"R... Reinhold...?" Sylvie says, her hands closed into trembling fists. "W- what are you doing here with THIS PERSON?" she mutters through gritted teeth.

"Sylvie?" Lord Girardot says, a look of surprise on his face. "I wasn't expecting to see you here..."
"...er, you know each other?" you ask, rather alarmed by Sylvie's sudden turn in mood.

I'm kind of against punching the dude in the face, since we're trying to avoid an international incident.

When we were told the story, we were also told that Marianne was embarrassed about what happened, and asked them to keep it a secret.

You honestly think this guy would be more than a stain on the wall if Gregory, or Vincent, or Tierri, or Arnuad etc. etc. knew about it?

Reinhold will have someone to be on a lookout from. Let's just make sure it's not to the detriment of other threats.
>>
>>28926850
>>28926901

Yes you're right. He must be seriously formidable if he somehow got ennobled afterwards, especially in a country like Perricone which has a very old and jealous noble class. Although no one knows the circumstances of his dismissal, it's probable that a few people, certainly in Perricone's Court, know that he used to be Marianne's bodyguard. This may be our nemesis right here.

Why the hell was he invited to this party where no one knows him? If he was recently ennobled, either he or his wife must know people, or he must've done something to warrant an invitation. I doubt they would raise him up and give him a large or important fief right off the bat.

>>28926851

I think she's probably a noble, possibly the scion of a very powerful family. I bet Giradou humiliates her sexually every night, just like in my chinese cartoons.
>>

"Again I thank you for your assistance, but sadly now that I know who you are I need to ask you to leave. Immediately."
Bow slightly.
"It is for your own continued safety, Lord Girardot. You see my princess has ordered me to refrain from violence, and I would so hate to disappoint her."
>>
>Nicolette: "So, uh... Marianne's old bodyguard. Yeah. He used to be a Royal Guard captain, but then he got booted up to bodyguard what, three years ago?"
>Sylvie: "We're sixteen, so, um... two years ago, not three. Mari- I mean, the Princess is a year younger than us, remember?"
>N: "Oh yeah. So two years ago, her old bodyguard retired a little while after Marianne's thirteenth birthday and this guy got promoted. I thought he was an alright guy, and he actually managed to get along decently with Marianne even though she's- anyways, things looked pretty good, yanno? So anyways, I guess he was looking to, uh... further his position. Get in close with Marianne when she's younger, position himself as her only male friend, and then when it's time for her to find a husband, he'd be the obvious choice. So now that Marianne's pretty hot, he decided to put the moves on her. And when she turned him down because she's only into guys who won't let her walk all over them..."
>S: "He didn't take it well."
>N: "Not at fucking all. So he was like pushing her against the wall and shit and Melanie saw and ran and got me since I'm a captain and I so beat the living shit out of him right then and there,"
>S: "Should've called me..."
>N: "Totally should have, then Vincent would've gotten to him and he'd be a smear on the fucking wall. But yeah, that's what happened. Marianne felt all ashamed about it so she begged me and Melanie not to say anything, and I only did on the condition of him getting the fuck out of the country outright, or else I'd get -my- old man to murder the shit out of him."
>S: "And Nicolette never brings her father into anything, so he knew she was dead serious. So then he left and they held the tournament and then you came and now everything's going great!"

Judging by her previous reaction to an accidental ass-grab by Reinhold, she'll probably try to kill him on sight. That or she'll collapse into a gibbering, sobbing mess and have to be escorted out (whether that happens before or after confrontation with Giradou is unclear).

>>28926537 Also, I say we should probably just go with this.

At least if shit seems to be going bad, we have Gregory to break it up. But we should be keeping an eye on the princess and another on him.

Really the situation seems sort of shitty in foresight, since we're not supposed to know this, and we straight up can't tell or warn Marianne or Gregory. If we told them, that'd just crumble the attempts of us getting Marianne closer to Nicolette and Sylvie, and she'd certainly distrust us and them.

To be honest, I'd say we'd just have to break the mold when it comes to it. We'd have to convince Marianne to actually tell someone about it, maybe with the both of them and Melanie so there at least are alibis.

It's all returning to nothing and it just keeps crumbling down.

No. Assasination is wrong.

This is princess GUARD quest, not HITMAN or murderer quest.

Although if she expressly says to relieve her of that person, Reinhold will obey, perhaps with satisfaction.

This scheming to murder him now when he's not threatening anyone is just over the top.

no, she wouldn't like the fact that we were talking about her behind her back. let her know he's here and maybe let her know we know things didn't end well (even if we didn't know crap sylvie's pissed reaction would have clued us in to something happening) but no more unless she wants to talk about it

>Step 1: Secure the megane. We're not taking the punching-faces-in approach, so no point in risking anyone else doing it.

>Step 2: Play it cool. No need to cause an incident. If we do, no one will sympathize with us cuz we're helping Marie cover up what happened, when we probably should've spoken to someone about it.

>Step 3: Throw the killer intent into maximum overdrive. He needs to taste our hatred and our thirst for his blood in the air and recoil in fear. However, we keep it entirely locked tight. For the sake of Step 2, no one can suspect anything is amiss.

>Step 4: Speak up. "Oh? Oh! No small wonder you'd do so well for yourself among such people! I'd been starting to wonder! But yes, I've heard SO much about you... Pity we can't talk more. And we have so much to discuss! Still, such things deserve proper attention, so there's no point in rushing things just this moment. I'll be looking forward to next the time."

>Step 5: Disengage. Leave, bringing Sylvie with us, and go discuss with Nico on how to proceed. Marie hates this enough as it is and it's unlikely she can just up and leave, so we should avoid telling her if at all possible.

>Step 6: Defend the objective. If this fucker so much as trips in Marie's direction, fill him with sword.

Confronting is not the order of the day. The guy could have just as well forgotten why he left Granache in first place. Memory has its tricks of quelling dirty conscience, and denial and selective forgetfulness is one of them.

We just need to
1) warn Marianne that he is here, so she's not taken by surprise.
2) warn Lucianna that this pretty cool new noble we've just met has a big skeleton in his wardrobe and is to be held at sword's length. Details are optional perhaps after consulting with Marie
3) Be on a lookout. This guy is not sophisticated enough to be the real thread or behind the abduction, and his appearance is probably just plot-driven coincidence, but he COULD have been planted as a decoy to stir shit up.
>>
>>28927306
Here's the catch: I don't think he has ANY interest in Marie anymore.

His entire reason was because he wanted a noble status. Now he has it, he has zero reason to even associate with her anymore.

His coming onto her was a calculated move.

I think he's smarter than to try it again. At the fucking ball, with Gregory sitting RIGHT THERE. Especially when he has a title already.

I think you're associating him with pure evil. When he's not, at worst he's a sociopath.

People letting their emotions get in the way of the bloody obvious: he's toothless and would love nothing more than for everyone to forget what happened. He's probably ten times as scared of Marie as she is of him. Especially with his new wife standing RIGHT THERE. Who probably doesn't know that he tried to tap the JB peaches of a princess.

If the reverse happened and we met Spinelly, I would not think that it would be good for Rein if Marie where to publicly freeze the woman to death. No, Rein would need to confront her on his own, and surpass his traumas however he might choose, be it by law or at swordpoint.

I think it's time to summon Monique to relieve tension with flowery speeches and aggression toward reinhold.
>>
>"Reinhold... this person is Milien," Sylvie says, cracking her knuckles. "He's the one who was Marianne's bodyguard before you came along."

>Wait... so this guy is...

I can barely stop myself from reaching for my sword as burning hot rage courses through my veins. My desire to avenge marianne mixed with my feelings from my own treatment at the hands of that horrid woman mix together, becoming a seething brew of hatred, straining to break free from my chest.

I swallow it, I can't make a scene here regardless of how much I want to. Marianne didn't want this coming to light and there's no way I can allow myself to hurt her image like that. Even if I take it all upon myself... who knows what the next bodyguard will be like and how Gran and Citrine would feel.
I can't do that to them.

I restrain my hate and shift my hand from my blade to instead brush some dust off from my fall from before.
Any hope I had that he didn't notice my sudden swell in killing intent as I watch Sylvie's face. Whatever happened in that moment, it scared her.
She's looking at me like I'm some eldritch monstrosity, something inhuman and strange.
No matter, perhaps I am.
I turn to Milien and note his suddenly guarded expression, his eyes swiftly scanning my features as he tries to figure out my next move, and how much I know.

As much as it pains me I put on my best smile and address him like before
"Oh you're the one? I've heard so much about you. It's good to meet the man that came before me, perhaps you can give me some pointers later?"

He blinks as if shocked and slowly a wide smile grows across his face.

"Why of course Reinhold, I'd be happy to have a chat with you and the princess later. Marianne was a good friend of mine before I suddenly had to visit family in Marconetti, I would love to catch up with her, pick up where we left off"

That's it, I reach for my sword again as the words of the arctic edge spell rise in my mind unbidden and sw-

"Honey, perhaps we should go"
>>

No one is asking to not be pissed off. We can be as furiously angry as we want to be. This is something we should know very well.

But this is neither the time nor the place to be thinking of revenge or ways to get back at him. Nor is it the place to get back at him at all. Parties and birthdays may be the few times we ever meet the guy. So this guy we'll be seeing a lot of.

That said, we shouldn't tell her, Sylvie should tell her, since I'm not sure Marie knows we know.

I want to know just what this guy did to Marianne.

agreed, we don't want her to know that we were told, that would undermine her relationships with everyone.

>Marianne and Milien
>Reinhold and Monique
This is bound to be interesting. I wonder if there are any other nemesis-parings at this party

yes, let sylvie tell her that the guy's here. maybe mention that from sylvie's reaction we can tell things didn't end well, but nothing else unless she want to talk about it

>Spinelle showing up
>Adrien crashes through a window taking vengeance on the guy that hired the dragon mercs

i love picturing stuff like this. you get hired to discreetly kill a guy then when you show up shit has spiraled so far south you can beat him over the head with a chair and no one will look twice

I know what you mean cause we're on /tg/, but man out of context what you said is pretty fucked up.

>Milien kidnaps Marie and magically subdues all the major players
>Reinhold and Monique set off on a Rivals Turned Friends Broventure.
>save like... 30 god damn princesses

I'd play that quest. It's like a high fantasy buddy cop flick.
>>
Is it bad that I want to hold handswith Marianne?
>>
>>28931775
Nah, it's cool. I mean, Reinhold already has.

Lets view this objectively.

He won't try anything there. It's too risky.

But he's ballsy. He wanted to marry the princess and take a throne. A minor, recent title is a DISTANT second place and he may try something drastic. He may go after a princess at some point. If his wife has some kind of accident, he could be the one marrying Marianne, or Luci, or he might just be sleazy enough for the even younger girls. Or try anyone else in the royal family.

Keep one eye on him from time to time here, then check on the girls after the party. He's probably not the actual guy doing it, but he's worth watching.

Remember, he held OUR job. That means he's at least as badass as we are.
