Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

On the whole, things seem to be aligning themselves as you've planned for some time. However, one last thing weighs on your mind: City 002, the source of the highly aggressive constructs that have repeatedly attacked you. You followed the trail of the robots through the tunnels they dug to attack you, and meandered into the Timorian Deep, the dark underground reaches of Venia.

You encountered and fought a Vog Brain, a powerful Spirit creature that could use other Vog as part of a larger body. And to your pleasant surprise, Steward 001, the amicable robot that first made contact with you, came to your aid. But your battle drew the attention of a second robot: Steward 002.

001 held off his counterpart briefly so you could make your escape, and you reached the ancient dwarven city of Va'ad, and found Steward once more. He explained the nature of the situation, including 002's quest for vengeance against the surface by harnessing the power of the Core of Chaos at the heart of Venia.

He also suggested a plan: by deactivating the power generators feeding mana to the city, it would be possible to weaken 002 so that the code holding the other artificial intelligences under his command could be eliminated. You Pocketed both of the generators, and the city went dark. You confronted 002 in the core of the city; after a lengthy battle in which you dismantled his automated defenses and fought with him directly, you were forced to chase him down into the depths of the earth.

The tunnel he flew into proved nearly endless, but it did end - at the very core of the world. Fearful of the consequences of further combat near something so vital and sensitive, you used one of your most dangerous powers and Erased 002.

>con't

In exploring the underside of the world, you discovered that the barrier of Order which keeps Chaos contained has been damaged. Chaos leaks from the Nether within in bubbles of energy, which then become demons upon reaching the surface. The crack in the barrier mirriors the great gulf known as the Lady's Finger. Vampiria and Archon both work from their respective cities to keep anything from escaping the Finger, but this process may be directly related to the greater problem of ever-increasing Chaos that threatens Venia's future.

For now, you must face the threat that faces you.

With Va'ad restored to the control of 001 and the other intelligences, you now have another powerful ally on your side: and they gathered together for a meeting. While skeptical of Yi Fang and the Black Lady, your allies have agreed to present a united front...though they'll be watching Fang, especially, for any sign of scheming. Abigail plans to keep him in check herself, while Auriel hopes to get him locked in a room with the Black Lady. Either way, you need him there to help cure Flint's parasite for good.

It's the night before your departure. After catching up with Abigail, and calming her nerves, you've decided to speak with Flint, who might be most nervous of all, and then Ila.

You take her hand up in yours. It's nice to feel her. To know she's there. Something solid. Something warm. Tying you down...but not in a way that feels restricting. It comforts you. She's so...real.

<What were your parents like?>

Abigail smiles. She closes her eyes. "My mother...she was beautiful. She was the prettiest woman in Jacob's Field." She opens them again. "There were a one time - heh - she was approached by drunks. My father chased them off, though. I remember not really getting it at the time, but now I know. Besides that, though...she was warm. She always smiled. That's what I remember most. Always a smile, no matter who it was." Abigail frowns a bit. "She smiled at those men, too, but it was a smile like a viper would give a rat. I think...it was good that my dad intervened. But I never saw her get angry, not once."

<What about your father?>

"My dad," Abigail says. "He was similar. Very...intent on things. He could get so involved in just tinkering around that you could come up right behind him and he wouldn't notice. But he was kind...always kind to me."

She sighs. "It's nice to talk about it. It was so long ago...I feel like the memories I have are fading."

<Tell me about them,> you say. <That will keep them new.>

Abigail smiles. "Well, there was this one time...mother was baking a pie, see, and there were a few boys in the village that..."

----------
----------

After a few goodbye kisses, you leave Abigail's room, feeling as though your relationship with her is stronger than ever.

You decide to go speak with Flint. He's probably more than a little nervous about the whole thing.

You walk to his room on the Cirrus, slipping along the steep halls without a sound. You knock on his door.

He answers swiftly. "Shadow. You know...I thought you might come to see me."

<Is that so?>

"You tend to come when you worry. Pretty obvious you'd be worried about me."

<...forgive my presumption.>

"No, it's fine. I'm fine."

<You're fine.>

Flint draws a deep breath. He runs a hand up through his hair. "Yeah, I'm, I'm good. I mean, you know. I'm..." He rubs his forehead. "Shit. I feel like I could puke I'm so fucking nervous. I mean...I haven't seen my family in 5, no, 6 years now. I haven't seen Megan. Or Gerald, or Matthel, or Harvan. My father. My damn father."

<...I suppose we'll just have to get through it.>

"Yeah. I mean..." Flint shakes his head, his eyes staring into the hallway past your side. "What the hell am I supposed to say when I see her? 'Oh, hey Megan, how are things? This is Shadow, my amorphous friend who's actually a reincarnated Erebus, probably. And this is Auriel Lightchoosen. You know, 5th Highest. We're together now.' I mean, fuck me. I...I still..." He grits his teeth, takes another breath. The air hisses back out his clenched jaw. "I mean, I...I still have feelings for her. There's..." He puts a fist over his heart. "There's still something here. And it hurts."

<...does Auriel know this?>

"...she knows. We've spoken of it many times. She just said...well..."

<Yes?>

A grim smile breaks through the pained look on Flint's face. "She said, and I paraphrase...'It's only natural that you feel that way. Settle up with her and be done with it - she's your brother's wife now. So put it to rest, the way you should have 6 years ago. More importantly, you're mine, so even if she's changed her mind she'll just have to back the fuck off'."

<It sounds like what I'd expect.>

"Yeah."

Getting his mind off his family for a moment or two will probably help. <What do you think about the situation?> you ask him.

He blinks for a moment, thrown by the change of topic. Eventually, he shrugs. "Hey, if you told me we'd have all these people working together in an alliance to help Arland last year...I'd be laughing at you. But here we are." He muses on it for a moment. "I guess it depends on your definition of 'working'. We'll be more like a...highly dysfunctional family." His face darkens. "I know all about that."

<You just have to take things as they come,> you say. <The words will be there when you need them. Don't force them out.>

"...yeah. Just wish I had them now, I guess."

A little from column A, a little from column B.

Maybe a little more background on the history behind the split with Archon, and what kind of attitude they tend to have toward the parties we intend to bring to the table.

Historically, Arland would likely have fought against Orcs and Werewolves, as they were Archon-made soldiers, but we don't know how the defectors from the Forest will be viewed. Do they have a generally favorable outlook (sympathetic toward them due to the abuses Archon had put them through), or negative (on account of probably having fought against them during the rebellions?)

He grew up there in a prestigious family, so he probably knows the history, but might not have the entire man-on-the-street perspective. But that doesn't really matter so much. Even if, in an ideal world, we'd want to go with the whole "hearts and minds" approach, we're practical enough to know that winning over the bigshots is probably enough in the short-term.

How about ask if he even wants to tell us about his family?

*laugh followed by shoulder punch*<Flint let me be blunt, you CAN do this. Think of all you've done since we met, fighting impossible odds, slaying Demon Lords, even gathering those fractured by the Elementomancy. Sounds exactly like the great things you promised to do when you first left. Sure you stumbled along the way but so what, use this to make up for lost time. We'll be here to pick you back up no matter how many times it takes you. You believed in me and gave me a chance to become better than I was, what kind of friend would I be to not do the same for you>>
>>
<You've spoken a lot about your family...but I feel like I don't know that much about them.>

Flint nods. "Well...three brothers. Gerald, the oldest. Uh...Megan's...husband." He clears his throat for a moment. "He's kind of an arrogant son of a bitch, if I'm perfectly honest with you. He...always hated me. And I hate him."

<...why does he hate you?>

"My gross incompetence," Flint said. His eyes narrow. "The constant bad luck that I now know was because of this damn demon parasite. He felt I shamed our family. But I always worked hard. I trained three times as much as the rest of them. I studied until my candles burned through. I even practiced dancing so I wouldn't trip up over myself in the balls. But it never mattered."

<How did you stay motivated? If nothing you did made a difference?>

Flint looks at you with a half-smile. "...it...let me be alone, for one. When people weren't around...everything clicked. With no one to observe, I could swing a sword with the skill built by my efforts. I knew all the classic poems by heart. I could dance the fastest and hardest movements. It was always when someone was watching...it afflicted me. And so...I thought that was it. That's what everyone concluded, too. Stage fright. Bad in public. Terrible with people. But my training...alone, with my training. That was my comfort, my only solace. It wasn't so much as being motivated to work so hard as it was I made hard work my escape from the castle."

<...Flint.> You put a hand on his shoulder. <I'm sorry.>

>con't
>>
He waves a hand. "It happened. It's done. The problem is, that horse's ass Gerald wouldn't ever let me live anything down. Say I spilled food on my shirt. I mean, I could go change my shirt. Gerald would be there to point it out to everyone before I could get out of the room. He's that kind of person. He...he enjoyed it." He shakes his head. "I don't like thinking such things about him, but by the elements, he thrived on my misfortune. So I hated him. And when I tried to get back at him, I inevitably...screwed up."

You're quiet. You don't really have anything you could say; nothing Flint could relate to. But he seems content to continue. So you let him vent.

"And then, Harvan," Flint says. "My third oldest brother, three years my senior. He wanted to be a knight, like me. For a while...we were closer. But over time, he grew distant. He started standing next to Gerald more often. He didn't berate me, but...he couldn't respect me. I was an embarassment. He looked at me like a man looks at a starving dog."

<...that's terrible.>

"Matthel, though," Flint says. He smiles brightly. "Older than Harvan, younger than Gerald. He...he was always there for me. He was the only one I considered a real brother. He defended me. He stood with me. He gave me the courage to pursue my dreams, when I was ready to...to do other things. He told me that if I hated home, I should leave and make of myself what I would. And Hemmelus - my teacher - agreed.

"I think I've mentioned Hemmelus to you before. He's an incredible sage - capable of wielding all four greater elements, so a certain extent. He taught me what magic I know, as well as a great many other things. I learned many things from him, alongside Megan.

<What about your father and mother?>

>con't
>>
"...my mother died when I was very little," he says. "I never knew her well...though, Gerald and Matthel did. They say she was a beautiful, kind woman. As for my father..."

Flint's face grows still.

<...yes?>

"...my father. Lord Arcturis Flint. He can die in the Nether for all I care."

<That's quite something to say about your own father.>

"Gerald bullied me," Flint said. "And he would beat me. But eventually, he'd let me stand back up. My father didn't do that. Anything less than perfection was total humilation for the family bloodline. A toe out of place was a toe that should have been cut off yesterday. He threatened to disown me more than once. Usually it was Matthel and Hemmelus that talked him out of his rages. A brutal, impatient, and terrible person. I..." Flint holds his head in his hands. At this point, he's sat down on his bed, knees on his thighs. "...I remember wanting litle more than to run him through more than once. I'd imagine striking back at him, breaking his jaw when..." Flint pushes both hands back up through his hair and sighs. "Fuck, Shadow. I'm going to see these people tomorrow. I've got to keep it together."

You feel terrible for Flint. Your alliance has never seemed as fragile as it does now.

<...do you think he'll ally with us?>

"It's a coinflip," Flint says firmly. "He's ugly, but he's infinitely pragmatic. Arland always came first, the Flint family a close second. If he feels like he has no choice...then yes. Otherwise...I honestly don't know. It's been six years. Maybe he's changed. But I'm not holding my breath."

You absorb the information for a moment. And then, something you haven't done in a bit - you focus your senses.

The Shel'kath is still there, as tightly woven about Flint's soul as ever. It sits there, still and silent. Fang's token is holding it in place.

The long, ethereal tail of spirit leads off and through the wall of the airship...to somewhere else.

>con't
>>
<No matter what,> you say, <to me, you Sir Donovan Flint, the man who has begun Aeolus's order once again. You've even got the cape to prove it.>

Flint glances across the room. His enchanted cape, imprinted with Aeolus's sigil, rests across the back of a chair. "So I do, Shadow. Right from Xile, huh."

<Damn fucking straight.>

Flint flinches away from you. "...elements, Shadow."

<I picked those up from Auriel,> you say. <Too much?>

"Uh, well...just odd from your mouth, I suppose. Speak as you would."

<I'll stand with you, no matter what,> you say. <Though thick and thin. Through whatever comes our way - angels or demons. Until the parasite is gone, and the safety of your people is restored, and for as long as you want me after that. I'm at your back.>

"...rather, in my shadow."

You chuckle. <I guess so.>

Flint smiles. He stands, and clasps your shoulder. "...I am glad, Shadow. And I'm glad to speak of this to you. I've...rarely told anyone these things. But my heart eases to share the burden."

<Share it freely, my friend.>

"Same to you." He sits again. "Well. Tomorrow's the day. I suppose I had better get some sleep. Have you spoken with Abby?"

<Just came from her room.>

"Bet you did, you sly dog."

You're a bit taken aback. <Well...I mean, I wanted to check in. Make sure she was alright. These things are - >

"And steal a few kisses!" Flint says. "Ha! Now the shoe is on the other foot!" He rubs his hands together wickedly. "Oh, Shadow. All the teasing, all the torture...expect it to return tenfold!"

You swallow.

You find Ila outside the Cirrus, in the grounds between Haven's outter wall and the fortress. The mages have set up a sort of practice field near the north wall. The tall trees of the wood loom over the stone, swaying a bit in the frosty winter air. Most are bare of leaves.

Ila's focus is set on a training post. It's a twisted bit of metal, steel-adamantium, salavaged from the Noiralev. She steps in front of it, slashing with one of her daggers. She would have come up short, but a shadowy aura lengthens her blow and snaps across the metal target. She steps back and ducks, as if dodging an imaginary blow. She vanishes and reappears behind the target in a blink, thrusting with both knives. Shadow power juts forward, and then explodes over the target in a controlled, close-range Shadow bomb.

She sighs, straightens. Wipes her forhead. And then, she notices you. She pauses for a moment, meeting your gaze, and then sheaths her knives. "...Shadow. How are things?"

<Things...are chaotic. But we'll manage.>

"Yeah. We will."

<Indeed.>

"I sensed that Sir Flint was...nervous."

Well, it's done in over with. I guess just tell her she's still a good friend and like family and that we still care about her and all that other shit.

This isn't entirely accurate, since the Black Lady is also going to be attending, but she IS going to be one of the primary representatives of Haven, in its first real exposure to the 'real world', no less.

A different set of implied responsibilities and pressures, but still one worth talking about.
>>

Ohh, I like this idea. If we agree to avoid all offensive and illusion magic. It might get out of hand otherwise. Blink is still free game.

Option 1

>>
>>28910571
Ok then.

>>28910491
>"Would you like a sparring partner?"
Because a moving target is always better practice than a stationary adamantium post, and the rest of our chosen discussion topics can happen while sparring.

>>"Thank you for the help in the Deep, Ila. It was of great assistance."
Which is probably going to lead to a candid discussion of her abilities and how we choose to delegate manpower if she mentions being dissatisfied with our choice of when to ask her to stay behind. An awkward topic of conversation, but one that I think we could benefit from having with her.

>"Are you prepared to represent all free Shadow mages?"
A bit of an exaggeration, as I mentioned in >>28910462 but still.

>A bit of an exaggeration, as I mentioned in >>28910462 but still.

Agreed, change it to "represent Haven." Or something like that. It also removes our need to bluntly ask her if she is going to throw her life away for us. Since she can't represent Haven if she is dead.

A thought comes to mind - maybe a way to break the strange ice that sits between you. <Would you like a sparring partner?>

She looks up from her toes. "...I...yes, of course."

<Then by all means.> You ready yourself. <The worst you can do is stab me.>

She charges. And then, she's gone.

You spin, and your forearms sweep up. You knock the thrust of her dagger wide.

Her second dagger plunges toward your abdomen. Another arm grows out of your stomach and catches her wrist. You lift her, then throw her over the grass - not too hard.

She easily deals with the fall by rolling over her shoulder - but before she gets to her feet, she's gone again.

You sidestep. Ila plunges down into the spot you'd stood just a moment before. She crouches to absorb her momentum, the springs back toward you, lunging with the daggers again. You move to block.

The daggers suddenly lengthen, doubling, tripling in size from a shadowy aura that wraps about them. You attempt to compensate - but she doesn't even hit you. Each dagger stops to either side of your chest.

You open your arms to knock them away, and then a close-range Shadow Bomb blows up in your face.

>you've taken 1 damage
>80/81

Clouds of dust and dirt clear. You back up, trying to find her. That one stung a bit.

>con't
>>
A flicker on your right.

But turn left.

Her double-feint broken, Ila is caught with her attack half finished. You grab her wrists with lengthened, shadowy arms. Two more arms split off your wrists and wrench the daggers out of her grasp. You toss them to the side.

"Your win."

You let her go, and she collects her daggers. <Impressive.>

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68EsL0MsvQE

"I...I want to be your strength," Ila says.

<You represent Haven,> you say. <You represent the shadow mages. You're vital to what I'm trying to achieve. You always have been.>

Ila shoves her weapons into their sheaths. "I thought...when you spoke to me of the world...I felt...this is a person who understands. This is a person that knows what it means to be a Shadow mage. This is someone I can stand behind." She blinks rapidly. "And then I felt myself wishing...to stand next to you, not behind you. But that spot's already been taken." She turns back to the target. "...but so it ever was."

In one moment, she stands, balanced on her toes. In an instant, she's sprinting for her target, her arm extended, and she sweeps across it. The blade of shadow curved about her hand slices neatly through the adamantium. The top half tips over and thumps to the dirt.

She clenches her fist. "I'm getting used to your powers. My daggers...are starting to become irrelevant, really." She looks up at you. "If not for you, we would all be slaves. My life would still have no meaning. But thanks to you, I can choose my own fate. I have already choosen it. I will always be your shadow."

<...good. Because we'll need your strength. I will need it.>

She nods.

Do you have anything else you'd like to say?

I WANT to say that there are certainly others that we would say stand at our side as well. Sir Flint, Auriel, etc. And it's true that she can count herself among them.

But I also know that that's not what she meant by it, so it's really not going to change anything.

>>28911265

<But,> you say, <there's more to life than that. I'm glad to have you. I'm glad for you strength. But if that's all you live for...what happens when the conflicts end? When the battle is over? That's what I'm concerned about.>

"...I don't understand."

<Ila, the last thing I want you to do is become a martyr for me,> you say. <If helping me makes you happy - well, I'm happy to have you. But it's healthy to be a little selfish. What makes you happy?>

"...I'm not sure," she says. "I was...captive for so long. I don't really..."

You approach her, and give her a gentle pat on the shoulder. <I think the answer to that question is more important than anything else. It's why I'm doing all this,> you say. <Yes...I want good things for the world. I want there to be peace. But that's only so I can live as I see fit. Winning the battle is just a step on the road.>

Ila is quiet for a long moment. Eventually, she looks up at you. "...I will look for that thing, then. But where do I start?"

<I don't know,> you say honestly. <That's the problem with being free. You've got a lot of choices.>

"Heh. Yeah." She begins to walk toward the Cirrus. "I'll...see you later. I want to think about this."

<Until tomorrow.>

She waves at you, then Blinks over to the entrance of the ship.

What do you do now?

>SM have we been ignoring the dream world a whole lot?

Yes. I've been forced to scrap it repeatedly.

Originally, your meditations were supposed to lead you into the dream world naturally. That was how you were to discover the overarching plot - that is, the problem of chaos and rampant magic. The queen would have contacted you there.

It instead became a method for strengthening your shards.

It was also going to be a sort of link into the nether. In fact, I've changed the fundamental structure of the world behind the scenes because the dream world just never came up in an important manner.

The Archonium is a physical portal into the dream world, given specific structure by the powerful enchantment. (I will grant you this because in-character you may have read a book in Archon or something discussing the major theories) However, by the time you got there, I had made it a Spirit ability to be purchased in the tree, and decided to shelve most of the plot-related things leading to it.

It may yet play an important role, who knows.Player creativity killed it; player creativity could revive it. At the very least some anons think it could be a useful tool of long-distance communication, and I'd agree.

Who the shelkath is connected to isn't the same person as who put it there in the first place.

After all, a few mages probably had to summon the thing(at least one on each end), and it was on behalf of someone requesting it - likely someone on the royal family - and its a whole conspiracy to put the damn thing in place.

The end connection is only ONE of those facets.

The morning comes. You rise from the bluff overlooking Haven, stretching after the long meditations. You leap from the cliff and glide over the outer wall, landing near the gathered leaders of the alliance.

Your entourage is substantial.

Valeria Kavanere and Young Bull are met by Great Tree, the old man you remember from your first meeting with the folk of the Great Forest. The venerable werewolf gives you a kindly smile. "Here's the one we have to thank for reminding everyone we're on the same side, I suppose. Strange that it turned out to be a Shadow mage."

<Strange people for strange times, I suppose.>

"Very true. I hope we prove to be of assistance. And earn our legitimacy amongst the peoples of the world."

You nod. <We have similar goals.>

Valeria is accompanied by some 20 elven rangers and a few earth mages. They give you appraising glances, but nod respectfully. Young Bull and Great Tree are alone, for the werewolf side.

Vaz Grak has come with a contigent of 15 ork warriors. In bristling black armor interspersed with wood slats, the giant green-skinned men are an intimidating sight. You greet him briefly; Vaz grunts at you, but says nothing else. His warriors maintain a silent discipline.

Obis, Freja, and Vidar are all there, along with 10 rangers from Felnoir as a sort of honor guard for the prince. Freja and Obis keep stealing looks at each other. You wonder how their relationship is faring...but Obis is committed to Kullia Nesteral, the lady held in marital captivity by his mad brother.

Steward is, as usual, alone. Though he does have five small, orb-like repair drones with him, resting on his shoulders. He says they're for on-the-fly maintenance...and intelligence gathering. Should prove useful.

Of course...what about Haven?

QM Default Suggested arrangement:

This is probably a reasonable idea; helps to make it more clear that it wasn't just Auriel that chose to defect.

We should make sure that people aren't going to tear the Duke's head off right when we get there, just as a precaution.

The last time most of our allies ran into him (or rather his duplicate) wasn't exactly on the best terms. There's a time and a place for them to read him the riot act, but it shouldn't be RIGHT as we get there.

We also don't quite know what Obis' personal plans are with respect to him and his country, and that's going to be pretty important when it comes to negotiations.

They are aware of the whole "rogue clone" situation and aren't particularly angry at him. Though they'll be giving him suspicious looks for a while.

Obis had a theory that it was a secret summoning group from Archon that was with the traitors, Duke Vellik thought it might be the light empire trying to get at Kelvere by giving Kan-Abar a push through their Light Noble Kullia Nesteral surrogate leader,

I suspect a third, as yet unknown party to be responsible...

It was in the first tree we unlocked and it wasn't that far in the summoning tree either, plus the abilities that let us use it were some of the cheapest.

Yeah, I know. But the Shadow Magic Tree (purple) is not the tree that has Blink in it. The tree with Blink in it is the one that's all of Erebus' inherent physical stealth properties.

While Auriel and Flint are talking to Vidar and Freja, you approach Obis.

His headband as been replaced with an ornate half-turban; it allows his hair to come up in a tuft above the cloth. The front is set with a red ruby. His enchanted cape billows out behind him as the cold forest wind blows, and he wears several layers of red and white cotton, creating a layered, sophisticated look. His sword is sheathed from his belt, and his shield rests strapped across his back.

<You look...princely.>

Obis raises an eyebrow at you. "I sure hope so. 2 years of rolling out of bed and walking, and now I'm back in the getup. It feels...different. I can feel it laying on my skin." He glances down at himself. "How the hell did I survive without any pockets?"

<It's not so bad without pockets.>

"Says the blob that can just produce extra arms at a whim."

<Point.> You're glad to see he's in his normal sarcastic spirits. <Obis...assuming we're successful. We're going to war against Kan-Abar.>

"I know."

<That means we might have to kill your countrymen. Your brother, Obis. He might not survive this.>

"That's fine, Shadow," Obis says. "Because I'm going to be the one to kill him." His eyes stare at Haven's fortress. His face is set with dark lines. "He took everything from me. He's become a monster. He has to be put down."

<Your own family?>

"It's because he's family that I have to do it." He looks at you. "I hope we can spare most. I will be trying to have the armies...however many join us...pose before the demons in a delaying action. The strike-team aimed at Kan-Abar will be doing the real work. If the demons are gone, Kan-Abar's armies can't possibly stand against us, even if we only have who we've gathered right now."

<You are determined.>

"Yes, I am."

He looks at you. "We rebuild. I will cede the Duke's lands back to him. I've heard that Isle Imil's navy has been decimated by our privateers. That is a debt that must be repaid. I'm sure they, Vellik, and Arland will want heavy reparations." He sighs. "Hopefully not too much. Realistically...in a generation, we'll be where we were before. Optimistically..." He looks at you. "Bringing in Archon and the Black Lady herself was the best thing you could have done. Kan-Abar has never been good friends with the Empire, and I'm sure Sandalphon is secretly giddy that we'll be taking such a huge blow. But open free trade with the Lady - ha! Imagine it, Shadow. Even the angels can't stop us if we just trade around the shiprakers in the northern seas. The south will try to suck us dry, but ironically, the cold north will be the ones to restore us." He taps his waist. "Speaking of which, if you could introduce me to her, I'd be in your debt. Uh...more than I already am."

<That's what friends are for.>

"I thought they were for drinking and sparring."

<That too.>

He glances at Abigail, who is speaking with Valeria, then gives you a sly look. "So I heard you got yourself a pretty sweet broad. She's got some nice curves."

1) After it had become irrelevant, so did the ability. The tree had to be adjusted to accept it; I picked a spot rather far in, location-wise, as the ability itself denotes certain experience with Spirit magic.

2) It's not late into the tree. Add up the experience cost of the abilities needed to unlock Dream Walk. It's not high at all, especially compared to other trees.

Obis flinches slightly. "It's not like that. I'm committed to Kullia. Shadow, I'm serious, it isn't...would you stop looking at me like that?!"

With everyone gathered, you cluster together in the middle of Haven, just outside the fortress. Abigail walks around the collective group, pacing a slowly circle. On occasion, she kneels and touches the ground, drawing at it with a finger. An orange glow marks where she does so. The casting of her spell continues until the group is surrounded by an orange haze.

"If there is treachery, here, councilor," Vaz says, "the blood feud will never end."

Abigail looks at the orc and plants her hands on her hips. "Now, you listen to me! You've been nothing but a bad mood and more trouble than you're worth! I won't defend what my uncle's done to you, or to anyone else. But I'm not him. So get that through your skull, because we've got to work together. I don't know if we can stand up to a Demonic Pentarch, but I'd prefer to not to find out the hard way. If your hot head screws all this up, then it would have been better if Shadow hadn't bothered to get you involved, because hundreds of thousands more will die!"

Abigail stands there, her hands thrown to her sides, brow furrowed. You didn't see that one coming.

But when you glance around the ring, it's quite clear that she's said what's on everyone's mind. Frankly, the orcs could prove a liability. But there might have been better ways to put it...

If you fight with us, you've got a chance to be recognized by other nations for what you are - a free and independent people. Why are you fighting so hard against the only people that bothered to offer you the opportunity?!"

Vaz Grak's biting commentary is effectively silenced. He sits back on his heels, blinks a few times, then folds his arms with a huff.

"Good!" Abigail says. "Now hold still, because compensating the spell for your magical resistance is quite challenging."

The orcs all go very still. Vaz Grak's eyes follow Abigail's movements, but he doesn't move.

You quietly heave a sigh of relief.

The gathering is teleported to the roof of a castle. A dust-colored wind whips around you. You glance out over the parapet.

Vischon isn't a huge city, but it's sizable. The fortress you now stand upon rests on the precipice of a mighty formation of rock that holds a strong view over a long bend in the Tairns. It winds out from the Archonian highlands, dipping through canyons, and then vanishes further along, out of sight behind more hills. Vischon itself spreads along the river and under the arch of rock.

"Vischon," Auriel says. "Attacked by Arland three times during their revolution. Never taken."

"I think you mean, their -rebellion-."

Everyone turns at the cold voice. And it is who you expect - Yi Fang, the Archmage of Archon. He's fully dressed in his armor, as if ready for all-out battle. It oozes spirit from every crack and joint, an orange light that brightens and dims with his breathing. By his own word, you know it's just for show...but it's still quite a sight.

Two people step out from behind Fang and his guard - Duke Vellik, deposed ruler of Kelvere, and Janus Miller, the thief of the Great Forest. Duke Vellik has Magnock's staff in hand, though you can now sense that the powerful Spirit magic within is contained by a strange force of Lightning. He smiles when he sees you. "And as a result, ever-curious Shadow, Kelvere had to forevermore pay a tax to both Archon and Arland to ship goods downriver to the Empire."

Janus Miller sighs. He's as strange as ever - a normal man decked up in a mismatched menagerie of obviously-enchanted items from head-to-toe. "World politics isn't turning out to be as hard as I'd thought. The answer is always money."

"I suppose that if you take money for power, then you've arrived at the right conclusion," Vellik responds.

Yi fang glances over the group. Vaz Grak makes a low grumble in the back of his throat when Fang's gaze lays on him. Young Bull, likewise, shows his teeth. Steward is impassive. Auriel stands with a single raised eyebrow, waiting for him to say something.

Abigail steps forward before that can happen. "Well, then," she says. "I'm glad we're all here. We're stronger for putting our differences aside."

"Still on about all that?"

You're getting rather tired of surprise guests, but this one does indeed take the cake. There are two other councilors with Fang - one, Tae Wong, you know well. His son once dueled Abigail; he's Fang's trustworthy general. The other - and the one who spoke - is the one that surprises you.

It's Yong Xu, the councilor that spoke out against Abigail's nomination to full councilorhood. You remember him leaving the ball on not-outright confrontational terms, but now, the young man stares her down. "You're an optimist, councilor."

Abigail smiles back at him. "You have me there. I am."

"But results cannot be denied," Xu adds, "for here we all stand. It is either the beginning of a new era, or the beginning of the end."

"It's both," Abigail says. "A new beginning for all of us." She glances at her uncle, and then at the rest of the group. "A time to put old wounds behind us, and move forward. To size the opportunites of this generation, rather than the hatreds of the past. Today is that day. And as for endings...the threat of the demons, will end."

"Well said, councilor," Valeria says.

>con't

"Hatred is itself an end," Steward says. His metal voice cuts through the windy air easily. "Else allows us to move forward."

Fang smirks. "Platitudes from constructs. It seems that servitude teaches important lessons."

"You would know about that, wouldn't you?" Young Bull says. The tension that was beginning to diffuse snaps back into the air almost instantly. But Great Tree puts an arm on the shoulder of his young ward and politely moves up until he meets Fang face-to-face.

"Elder."

"Archmage." Great Tree folds his arms behind his back, standing hunched. His wrinkled face is old, and his back is bent, but for some reason, he seems as tall as Fang. "We stand as equals, together. Or we do not stand at all."

"I've already agreed to end the policy of...recapturing old research," Fang says. "Your peoples are your own. Yourselves, and the..." Fang struggles to conceal the disdain of the last words. "...the warleader's."

Vaz Grak makes a rumble in his throat. "I'll believe it when I see it, lich."

"Now now," Fang says, smiling. "Don't be spreading rumors like that. My reputation is a fragile thing."

"Very," Great Tree says. "Let us hope you use your second chance wisely. I say no more on the matter. As the young councilor points out...this is a time to begin anew."

If everyone here together can believe in Councillor Fang's optimism, there will be forces and circumstances that will inevitably attempt to drive us apart. From within our own goals conflicting with each other, and from without, such as the Empire of Light itself.
Coming together today is just a step. Getting past grudges to work together is the next. Fighting the demonic armies of Kan-Abar is another. >>
<I couldn't agree more,> you say. Now it's your turn to step forward, and you can feel all their eyes. But it's not uncomfortable. For the most part, everyone of importance on the terrace of the castle tower is someone you know personally, or have helped and spoken with many times. The words come easily. They're the same words you've been telling everyone all along.

<Getting along isn't easy,> you say. <Coming together is just the first step. Getting past old grudges is the second. And so far, I think everyone is doing just that. And that's good, because we will be beset on all sides when we reach Arland.

<We're all here for the same big reason. We have to come together to defeat a threat that could consume the entire world. And if we don't, then we all lose. There is no one else. This is it.

<But there's more to it than that. In a meeting like this, we have a chance to reshape the world. We can go from a time of friction and strife, into a better place of peace. I believe in Councilor Fang's vision. And that is why I brought you here - to save the world, and to remake it. If we lose this chance, I'm afraid there won't be another. If we do not act now...then perhaps no one ever will.>

The only sound on the parapet is the slow brush of wind over the rock and stone. Everyone is somber. Even Fang's gaze is cast downward - if only for a moment.

"...you give me too much credit," Abigail says. She puts her good hand on your arm. "It's your vision."

"No," Great Tree says. "In truth...it belongs to all of us."

You give the elder a short bow. <You're right.>

Abigail smiles at Great Tree. "Thank you, elder." She looks about to the group. "Well. We have a destination, so let us be off. Is the boat ready?"

Vellik nods. "Indeed. Let us to the port."

Your entourage, which now includes 50 of Fang's elite mage guard, as well as twenty of Vellik's finest, begins a march down the slope leading to the fortress. Docked at riverside is a large, two-story barge, easily big enough for everyone. Before long, you're on board, and the ship is untied and pushes off. The ship is propelled by a team of dedicated mages, sending you along at a good clip. You'll be in Dobshire by late afternoon.

I have an alternative.
>>
You stand on the top of the barge, watching the cliffs of the highlands float by. After a time, tou decide you have a bone to pick with Fang - but as you head for the stairs, you see him coming the other way.

<Archmage, a word.>

"More than happy to offer several," Fang says. "As I was looking for you as well."

<I see. Well...to start. Yong Xu?>

"Keep your friends close, Shadow," Fang says, "but keep your enemies closer. He was Abigail's main opposition. If he's here, he'll have no choice but to publicly support our new agenda of peace and harmony, especially in front of the others."

<Seemed like he was testing the limits back there.>

"Oh, he'll push and needle, I'm sure," Fang says. "But he won't cross the line. Otherwise, I'll kill him."

The words are said with a casual finality that leaves you with no doubt that Xu will in fact be murdered if he puts a toe out of line.

"Anyway," Fang drawls, "about the knight. As I said, I'll be personally helping to remove the parasite. I've seen it before, so I know how to remove it."

<You have? What were the circumstances?>

"Not important to the here and now," Fang says. "And before you ask, I never found out who was responsible. So that won't help. But splitting a demon in half so as to create a parasitic effect on one soul leading to another is not a simple feat. We will very likely be dealing with the same group."

<And so this may be a repeat of the first event.>

"Precisely," Fang says. "As Flint moves physically close to his...partner, shall we say, the Shel'kath's tail will diffuse like so much untraceable fog. You can think of it as a huge rope being piled up in one place. Impossible to pinpoint. But there's a way to deal with it, a simple weakness, in fact."

<An that is?>

>con't
>>
"Triangulation," Fang says simply. "We will determine the general location of the other end of the Shel'kath as close as is manageable. You will head in that direction. I will lead the knight around the general target location to three separate points. You follow the line of the tail..."

<And then we pinpoint exactly where the other half of the parasite is.>

"Indeed. Simple, but effective. Now...even then, it will be tough to get an exact location, because the other end will probably be hidden and obfuscated by any number of enchantments or charms. This will let us narrow it down to, oh, say, a few dozen feet, a room or so. But there's only so many men that can fit in a room."

<Is this along the lines of what happened last time?>

"Yes," Fang said. "Only last time, the person on the other end of the parasite had duplicated the 'tail' effect and we accidentally killed the wrong individual." He shrugs. "No real harm done, we got him in the end."

<...is it possible that the person carrying the Shel'kath isn't aware of it? Or that someone else put it on them?>

"The whole point is to suppress power in one individual and transfer it to another," Fang says. "I suppose it could be adapted somewhat...all spells can. But to not be aware of a rush of mana and energy, nor sense from where it was coming, would take a dunce of unparalleled proportions. Frankly, I don't like them, but the knight's family just isn't that stupid."

<I see. Well...at least we have a strategy.>

"Yes. Now, as to the matter of the Black Lady."

<Yes?>

"She's a powerful card," Fang says. "As much a one as myself or Sandalphon. If we play her at the right time, we in the game. If we play her poorly, Arcturis will throw me out of the castle over which he claims ownership."

>con't
>>
<Isn't it time to let the rebellion go?>

"My grandfather built that castle. His grandfather stabbed me in the back." Fang looks at you. "I'll allow the Flints some leeway, seeing as we have other problems."

<How generous of you.>

"My, snappy today, aren't we?" Fang says. "To the point. Contact me if you feel the time is right. Of course, I'll keep my own judgement as well, but I'll at least let you know about it before she walks in the door."

<I'd appreciate it.>

"Absolutely. Now then, I've got to talk about how to most effectively kill other human beings and their demonic servants in large-scale war with a certain fallen angel. If you'll excuse me."

Fang departs the top deck of the barge in search of Auriel.

To be continued, probably Wednesday evening. I wanted to get to Dobshire at least, but ugh I'm tired.

Is there any particular naming convention for angels and shadow mages?

I've noticed that the angels all have the -el suffix except Lucy and Sandals, and the shadow mages tend to have short, clipped first names like "Ila" and "Cain".
>>
>>28917687
-el means "of god" and is used for many of the Biblical angels

I blame EXP arguments. But anyway, thanks man. It's great to finally get to the Happening.

Oh SM what do you think of my shitty abilities guy edit?
And more importantly, how much do you think you'll enjoy the War Council?
>>
>>28917687

All the angels names are actual biblical angel names.

The short names of shadow mages were intentionally selected to reflect the fact that, as slaves, they were stripped of identity. Something that can be said in a single grunt is something lowly.
>>
>>28917704

I know that much, anon. I just wanted to know if the syllables before "-el", like "Auri" and "Micha" and "Tyra" meant anything at all. Were they given their names by Hyperion himself?

I think the edit is hilarious and I already saved it.

Also, I'll very much enjoy the war council. I have a lot planned. I don't have a lot outlined, though. It's going to be chaotic.

Turns out that Tom is also one of those names.

But more importantly, so is Ron.

Ila Marril

Cain Mannad

Hamil Miller

They just haven't come up. Most of my characters have first and last names, even if they don't come up. That lends them a larger identity in my head, which helps me write them more individually.

Nope, just a funny coincidence.

Which is SQ in a nutshell. Half of it is meticulously planned, right down to the Greek references, the other half is constant emergency repairs on derailed trains.
