>A horse with no name

Nearly two weeks since departing the base of the mountain, you find yourself riding across a vast expanse of hardpan desert. The heat is sweltering, even with loose robes and no armor on. You wrap your head in cloth to keep the sun off of your face, but still your skin has managed to cook. Your entire group has developed at the very least a bronze glow since coming here, and Leman Russ has shed so much you could follow the trail all the way back if you needed to. The journey this far has cost you a horse already, and if not for Diane's ability to create water, you surely would have died from thirst by now. Still, the canteens can only hold so much, and the ritual can only be performed once per day, so rationing water is of utmost importance.

On this particular day, as you ride with the others, making idle conversation in an attempt to forget about the heat, Anna points out a large triangular structure approaching. It is obscured by heat lines emanating from the hot earth, but you can see it. Andre asks if it would be fine to examine the place up close, and perhaps use it for a camp so that you won't have to spend the night sweating from the hot ground.

Diane climbs down from the horse she'd been sharing with Anna, and gets into the back of your saddle. Andre and Anna proceed to ride off in the direction of the structure at top speed, promising to meet you further down the way with what they've found out. You and Diane continue with the cart and Leman Russ, at a slow but comfortable pace for the rest of the morning and afternoon. Sometime before sunset, you meet Anna and Andre, who are both wearing pounds of gold rings, chains, and carrying whole sacks of the stuff. You ask where it all came from, and they report that the place you saw was some sort of tomb, filled to burst with all manner of treasures.

Shaking your head in disbelief, you tell them that every last bit of it needs to go back. When Andre asks why, you honestly don't even know where to begin explaining.

It takes 40 minutes to get to the tomb with all of your things, but you want to make sure neither of them try to slip something into their robes. Once there, the three of you dismount, leaving Diane with Russ outside. The tomb's entrance is a large gray frame of stone, with two enormous stone statues in the shape of lions on either side. Within there are walls, floors and ceilings made of intricately carved stone bricks, depicting strange scenes and concepts you are unable to fully grasp. You light a torch, and have Anna and Andre lead you to the place where they found all their loot. Down the entrance hall, around a few turns and down a set of stairs, you come to a large doorway. Andre explains that there is a trick to opening the door, which he demonstrates by tapping one of the stones on the wall. Sure enough, the door slides open, granting you entrance. Inside the next room are piles upon piles of gold and jewels, more than enough to build a castle in fact. As wondrous as the sight is, you command Anna and Andre to dump out everything they grabbed, threatening to strip them down and shake their robes if they try anything funny. Just as they finish, you hear a low rumble in the distance, follow by barking and a scream. The three of you run full speed to see the cause, but when you come to the entrance of the tomb, you find it sealed shut. Andre panics and begins pounding on each individual brick, trying to get it to reopen, but none of them work. You can hear no sound from the other side of the door.

Rather than waste time and energy getting lost in this place, you and the others decide to sit tight and wait for a sign before making any rash choices. The three of you sit, leaving the torch on the floor between you so that nobody has to get tired holding it up. It doesn't burn as bright, but at the very least it gives you something to stare at besides the murals you can't read.

After a while, Anna begins coming up witha new song, but can't seem to rhyme anything with "boring tomb". About to go mad from sitting around, Andre goes to stretch his legs, promising to just go around the corner. However, as he gets the turn in the hallway, he exclaims something, and begins running down the hall. You and Anna quickly follow, trying to catch him, but you are met with a fork in the road, and no sign of which path he took.

You turn left, heading down the winding hallway in search of any trace of Andre. As you walk, the hall seems as if it gets narrower, and in fact you eventually find yourself a bit pressed for room to move. By the time you reach a door, you nearly have to walk sideways to fir comfortable. The door itself is simple wood, which you open to reveal a room filled with sacks and crates. The room smells vaguely of food, but you think it'd be near impossible for anything to keep in here after so long. You look around, waving the torch for light. Anna calls to you. pointing out a sack that has been torn open. Beans are spilling out of it, and they look like they're still edible, meaning someone must be living here. As relieving as that seems, you still need to find Andre before you do anything.

As you look around a pile of crates in the corner, you hear something strange. It is coming from a rather large sack, which upon closer inspection is wriggling. You open it and find Andre, bound and gagged and stuffed into the thing. You untie his mouth so he can speak. He tells you that the place is inhabited by some gross creatures who captured him, and planned to eat him. Suddenly you hear footsteps coming from outside the door, and realize that someone is approaching.

Without much time to react, you tell Anna to arm herself and prepare to attack as soon as someone comes in the door. She nods and draws her sword. Andre attempts to protest his bondage, but you tell him there's not enough time to cut him free.

Slowly the door knob clicks and turns, and in step three small creatures with enormous eyes and sagging skin, as well as raspy voices. They spot you and cry in high pitched tones, trying to draw weapons from their backs, but you and Anna are on them before they have a chance to prepare. One of them draws a crossbow, which you knock out of his hand using your sword, then kick him into the wall. The one behind him reaches for a short sword on his back, but you hit him with the pommel of your weapon, sending him into Anna who finishes him off with an elbow to the back of the neck. The final is already collapsed on the floor, having been been hit in the face with Anna's knee. The three of them roll on the ground, trying to get back to their weapons.

You try to ask again, but come to terms with their unwillingness to cooperate, and ask Anna if she can do any better. Putting up her sword, she approaches them and takes a powerful stance with her hands on her hips, demanding that they tell her the way out. They continue to shake for a moment, but stop after a moment and begin whispering to each other. Then the middle creature stands up and tells you all to follow them. You agree, and the three of them lead you out the door and down a series of hallways. They don't say a word to each other on the way, giving you a bad feeling about the entire thing. Eventually, you come to a staircase which leads up to another floor, and then more halls. You continue to follow until you come to a wall. The leading creature taps two of the stones, causing the wall to slid open and reveal a stone terrace. You nod to Andre, and the two of you step out onto the terrace. Indeed it overlooks the entrance to the tomb. You stare over the edge and see the cart and horses still where you left them. Over the other side, you see Leman Russ pawing at the sealed entrance, and you call to him. He looks around in all directions eventually spotting you high above and begins barking. Suddenly the floor falls out from beneath you, as the terrace retracts into the side of the tomb, sending you sliding down the side of the structure. Up above you can hear laughing and a scream, then see the wall you emerged from slide shut. You hit the floor, and Andre lands on top of you, taking the wind out of your lungs. The two of you writhe in the sand, staggering to your feet and brushing yourselves off. Leman Russ paws at your chest and whines. You scratch him for being so loyal as to stay here and wait, but now you are trapped outside, and two of your companions are stuck inside with those creatures.

After thinking for a moment, you decide there is no other way to proceed but to climb the side of the tomb, no matter how long it may take. Andre agrees, and you tell Leman Russ to wait down here a while longer until you return. He droops his ears, but goes back to the cart and lies down. You and Andre then begin climbing the lion statues outside the door, digging your fingers into the cracks in the stone for support. By the time you reach the tops of their heads, you are already slightly winded, but you press on. Higher and higher you go, never stopping for fear of falling down again. You pass the floor where you fell from, and keep going. At one point Andre slips, but manages to catch himself by drawing his saber and stabbing it into one of the larger cracks as he slides.

Eventually you reach the top of the tomb, which fortunately has a level section where the two of you can rest. Nearby is are ornaments that resemble chimneys and in fact do create narrow tunnels down into the tomb. When you look inside the nearest one, you see a room full of plants. They seem to be growing beans and potatoes in this room. Andre waves you over to another one, and inside you are relieved to see Diane, kneeling chained to a stone torch, mending something with a needle and thread.

You toss your sword down to Andre, who catches it easily, then shimmy down the opening the same way he did. It's somewhat difficult with your shield, but after a bit of a struggle and some flailing, you fall and land on your feet. You speak to your companions in hushed tones, to be sure you aren't found out by the creatures in the tomb before you're ready with a plan. When you ask why Diane is in this room, she explains that she was captured by the little creatures outside. There was a flash of light, and both she and Leman Russ were blinded, giving the creatures a chance to grab her and drag her through a secret door inside one of the lion statues. She fought back, but with no weapon and not much combat ability, they overpowered her and forced her into this room, telling her to mend a pile of old clothes. You look over to the pile, and recognize them as being the skin of the creatures, meaning that whatever they are, they're just wearing suits to look like they do. Then, outside the door, you hear something. You peek through the small barred window and spot one of the creatures dragging a large sack, seemingly filled with either more clothes or blankets, approaching the door.

The little man rolls around, clutching his stomach, as Andre unlocks Diane's chains and you leave the room, locking it behind you. You then head to the kitchen, going by your memory of the building's layout from above.

You come to a door, but stop when you hear voices from inside. You go to Anna, and unlock the iron ring around her leg which was securing her to the floor. She throws her arms around you, and you respond with the same.

While Anna gathers her things back up you go over to Andre and the little men to question them. After a little rough persuasion, they tell you that they are only here in hiding, after a strange church rose to power in the desert capitol. They purged the city of all non-humans, including their kind, and forced them into exile nearly 3 years ago. The three little men found this tomb, and used their knowledge of mechanics to disarm the traps and discover its secret passages. The little men apologize profusely for taking Anna and Diane, saying they only wanted them to do the chores they hated. One of them crawls up to you and begins kissing your boot while he cries. You and the others mount the horses and ride off without another word to the little men. You don't even look back as you continue along the path marked on your map.

You continue for a few hours, then camp, then keep going in the morning. A mere three days later, you are finally at your destination.

The desert capitol stands as a monument to the defiance of mortal creatures, almost a challenge to the forces of nature, and all their wicked designs. It is a great city made of sandstone, with several towers scratching the sky, and even trees growing outside, likely watered by some underground source beneath the city. The walls stand tall and thick, with sentries walking along the top. You come to a gate, though not much of one, as it is blocked by nothing but two men with spears and chainmail. They stand with spears crossed, watching as you approach. You can see through the entryway that the city within is full of people wrapped up in protective garments, seemingly going about their days as normal. But when you close your eyes and truly feel the area around you, you can sense a dark and sickening presence deep within. The sentries ask why you have come to the city.

Inside, you pass by many people, none of which pay you much attention, but some do take a long look at Leman Russ. One of them has a curved blade on his hip, the handle of which he seems to enjoy grasping. They stop in front of your horses and spit in the dirt in front of you.

You explain that you only mean to pass through the city, and are stopping for rest and resupply before you go. They begin circling your horses and nodding, looking each of you over. One of them takes extra notice of Diane as he passes. When they've made a full circle, the one with the weapon speaks up, "Well I don't think you'll find much for you here. See, the desert isn't very generous, not even to us natives. So I think you had all better just go back the way you came. Or something bad might happen to you."

A) "I'm sure we'll be just fine."

You try to diffuse the situation with calm words. The men don't seem pleased to hear it, but they aren't rising in hostility either. You attempt to take your horse and ride on. When you look back, they're still looking at you and speaking to one another under your breath.

It is not yet noon, and you aren't particularly tired, but you would like to rest and get a good meal before you get to work. Remembering that time is of the essence, you:

A) Begin asking questions around town
B) Find a place to stay
C) Split up and do both

You decide that it would be better for the entire group if you got to eat well and sleep before you began your work to find the Black Fire cult. The others agree for the most part, but Andre is nervous about staying here.

You find a decent place that offers two bed rooms. Inside it is nearly empty, save for a man reading behind the counter. The shade doesn't do much for the heat. You approach the man and ask for two rooms, three beds total. He looks at you, then at your robes, "You can't stay here. Are you trying to get me in trouble?" You ask what he means, and he explains that for him to allow you to stay here would incite ill will toward him from the local church. You try to assure him, but when that fails Andre offers up 10 gold for each night he allows you to stay, which changes his tune quite a bit. He allows you the rooms you need and you head up to unload your things. That evening you eat well before settling down to sleep. The temperature is much more bearable at night, allowing you to rest easier.

As you sleep close to Anna, something wakes you in the night. You open your eyes to the bedroom. There isn't much but a bed and a large glass window that shows the starry night sky outside. You hear scratching from above, and Leman Russ seems to perk up in his corner. He growls at the sound, but you don't hear it again.

You slip out of bed and reach underneath to grab your sword. You unsheathe it, and prepare for something to occur. There is only silence. Then, Russ barks as something falls from the roof and crashes through the window, followed by another. Anna wakes up from the noise, and both of you see two figures dressed in all black, wielding short blades in each hand. Anna rolls out of the bed to your side, hitting the hard floor twisted up in the blanket. You leap over the bed and attack with Leman Russ. Russ tackles one of the figures, pinning him to the wall, while the other meets your charge and knocks you backward onto the bed. He tries to bring his blades down into your gut, but you drop your sword to catch his wrists. Anna sorts herself out and grabs Dad's knife from your belt, springing into action to assist you. She takes your opponent in the back with the knife, and he stumbles backward into the wall, which only serves to drive it further in. Russ, in the meantime, tears at the arms of his opponent. You regain your standing and attack again, driving your sword deep into the stomach of the attacker who tried to stab you. He sputters and dies. You turn your head to see Anna notching an arrow, having picked the bow up in the time she had, and aiming at at the second attacker. Russ clamps his jaw down on the man's side, and Anna fires the arrow, which lodges itself in his skull. He goes limp and falls to the floor. After catching your breath and retrieving Dad's knife, you realize that Andre and Diane should have heard the noise and come to see what was wrong. You look to Anna, who seems to pick up on your thought, and both of you cross the hall to their room. You hear nothing from the other side of the door.

You drive your foot into the locking mechanism of the door once, splintering it, then twice, casuing the door to fly open. Inside you see two bodies, dressed in black just like the ones that attacked you. A window, shatter inward. And Diane, kneeling on the floor, still in her nightclothes, holding Andre in her arms, sobbing. You rush over to see him, and an immense weight drops from your shoulders as you realize he is still breathing. You ask Diane what happened, and she relays a story much like yours, only without any way to fight the men that broke in, and with her holy symbol stashed in her robes, she could only watch as Andre took them both on with his bare hands. You kneel down and look closely at him. He looks fine over all, but his eyes exude a black mucus that seems to bubble and churn with malice.

"I keep trying to heal him, but I don't know what this is! I wipe it but it won't stop! Please, help!"

You take Diane's holy symbol, but with the little healing magic you know, you don't feel confident in your ability to help. But you try anyway, closing your eyes and focusing tightly on the symbol, praying for Andre's salvation. Nothing happens.

You toss the symbol aside and lay your hands on Andre's eyes. The black stuff burns your hands when you touch it, but you keep pressing, praying to the Father of Light for help. You begin to feel a warmth in your palms, but whether it's from the stuff or the Father's power, you don't know. You close your eyes and speak loudly, invoking the Father. Andre begins to spasm, and you tell Anna and Diane to hold him down. You focus on Andre, remembering the times you've spent together, all the way back to the battle with the orcs in the Holy City. Andre screams in agony, and you can hear Diane sobbing loudly and asking the Father for help as well. Anna joins in, and at some point Leman Russ must have followed you in, because you can hear him howling. You cry out to the dark of the night, "Father please!", Diane follows, "Save him, Father! Save my brother, please!"

A blinding light pulses from your hands, and Andre gives one great heave, arching his back and shouting in pain. Then the light begins to fade, and Andre slowly relaxes his body. You take your hands off of his face, and see that they are burned and smoking. Andre himself looks calm, but there are terrible burn scar over his eyes. His breathing steadies, and Diane rains kisses all about his face, repeating. "Thank you, thank you Father." You fall back onto your rear, closing your eyes and laying your hands on their backs. Anna comes over to see you, and sees that they're burned.

You tell Anna to calm down, and that you'll ask for Diane's help once she's ready. Diane meanwhile continues to kiss and hold Andre, speaking softly to him between small sobs. When Andre finally comes to his senses, he looks around the room, confused. He asks what happened, and you explain about healing him.

"You healed me? Thanks but, try a harder next time. I can't even open my eyes."

You laugh, and tell Diane to heal him properly when she gets the chance. Your smiles fades quickly as Diane begins crying into Andre's neck again. You go over to see what the matter is, and catch sight of Andre's face. The pupils and irises are completely white. There exists no trace of them

Sunrise nears. You have spent the remainder of the night in bed with Anna, holding her while she cries quietly into your chest. You think that if you were alone, you'd cry too, but you try to seem strong if only for the sake of the others. You think back to a few hours earlier, when you went to check on the owner and found him dead, stabbed by a dagger as he slept. No authorities were called, and you merely covered him in his sheets and said a prayer for him.

Seeing dawn about to break, you tell Anna to stay in bed while you check on Andre and Diane. Andre was quite panicked about his situation, screaming and thrashing even as Diane held him close. When you enter the room, you see Andre laying in Diane's lap as she strokes his face and hair, both on the bed. She sings to him softly, a lullaby you aren't familiar with. His breath is slow, and he seems to be asleep now. You're glad. You approach Diane.

A) "Is he going to be okay?"
B) "I'm sorry Diane. I'm so sorry."
C) "They aren't going to get away with this, I swear to you."

"It's not your fault. If anything I blame myself for bringing him. I wanted him to stay safe, but I didn't want to leave him either. If I hadn't been so afraid, he would have been okay." She sobs silently, letting a tear splash Andre's face, causing him to wince. She wipes her eyes and sniffs. You try to tell her there was no way she could have known this would happen, but she doesn't seem very responsive to it. Instead of pressing it further, you ask if Andre will be okay.

"I think so. He wasn't in pain when he fell asleep. I think he's just scared. He was always scared of the dark." She pauses, "I don't want to stop now. After what Andre gave for this mission, I want to finish it. Don't even think about telling me to stay behind."

Diane agrees, but not happily. You look at Andre, examining his face. The burns are a bit ugly, but you can see how they might actually add some character to his face. In any case he seems at ease now. You look back to Diane and try to ask a few more things, but are surprised and cut off by Andre, "Could the two of you be a little louder? I was planning on not sleeping for a few days, and I could really use the help.

Diane hushes him, still stroking his face, and shuts his eyes, for whatever comfort it's worth. She asks you to leave them for a while longer, until Andre is ready to wake up. As you exit the room, you hear Diane begin her lullaby again.

In the morning, after you and Anna have gotten dressed and had a quick meal, you decide it's time to head out to gather information. You tell Diane to wait in the room and stay quiet, leaving Russ to guard them in case anyone comes back to check and see if they were killed. You exit the building, stepping out into the bright sunlight. Anna asks how you plan to proceed:

A) Be subtle, try to direct people to give you information slowly, but without anyone noticing
B) Be direct, and try to gather as much info as you can as fast as you can

You spend a few hours traveling around the city, eavesdropping and making casual conversation with people. The first few tries don't go well, but when you think to remove your robes and act as mere wandering adventurers, people seem a bit more open. One shopkeeper in particular mentions that there is going to be a meeting tonight in town, where the priests will perform a ritual to help weed out the heretics remaining in the city. You piece together that you aren't the only people refusing to worship the Black Fire god, but none of the people who seem to be on the lamb seem like they want to stir up any trouble.

Sometime between noon and sunset, you overhear a drunk in a bar talking about the church sending a few people to kill some heretics in their sleep last night. You're somewhat satisfied to hear how confident they are in your death, until he speaks again, saying that they plan on sending some more today, to make sure the job is done. Anna looks at you, worriedly upon hearing this.

A) Turn and ask the man for information regarding this

You and Anna leave the bar and head outside, mounting your horses and head back to the inn as fast as you can without trampling people in the street. As you ride, Anna asks whether you think Russ can handle whatever attackers they might send. You tell her that they likely would have sent their best last night, so as long as they didn't ambush them again, Diane and Andre should be fine.

You round the corner, turning into the street that leads to the inn, and see a crowd of people gathered near the entrance. Anna gasps, and you put your hells to your horse to speed up. However when you get close, you find not the bodies of any of your friends, but 7 men lying in the street, bleeding from several cuts. You ask the rubberneckers about what happened, and they tell you that all of these men tried to break into the inn and rob one of the patrons, but he beat them and dumped them out here. Anna catches up to you, and you tell her that something odd is going on. The both of you run into the building and up the stairs to Andre and Diane's room. There you see something odd.

Andre is standing, leaning against the wall, with both sabers attached to his belt as usual. Diane is crying again, but her face doesn't seem as sorrowful as before. Andre turns his head toward you, but doesn't open his eyes. he greets you and Anna both by name. Diane looks over to you and smiles. You ask them what happened. Andre speaks

"I suppose I should say, when the Father takes from you, he doesn't take selfishly. I lost my eyes, but he gave me something just as useful." He approaches you. He raises a finger to your face, " Eyes, ears, nose, mouth," pointing to each of them in turn.

You are stunned.
