You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

So Nicolette likes you...

...and she also likes Melanie...

...but she's still your best friend, so you're not about to let that screw up things between you.

Hopefully.

>Congratulations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

Oh... oh GOD.

Nervously, you wave goodbye and make a cool retreat from the suite without a single word.

Once you make it safely out into the hallway, you breathe a LONG sigh of relief. Dear God, that man is scary. And you don't even -want- to think about what would have happened if you had said something to Nicolette that he didn't like... a chill goes down your spine just thinking about it.

Returning to what you were going to do before Gregory popped up out of nowhere, you go a few doors down the hallway and into your own suite. Marianne's still sitting on the couch, reading intently... but then she closes her book.

"Oh... hello," Marianne says, glancing at you. "You come back just as I'm finishing up this book... rather interesting timing, that."

Then a shitstorm about some fucks getting mad over including or not including throwing knives happened. Then for like 20 threads people pushed really hard saying "this is like a VN quest" followed by "archelon should make a VN". Compare like the first five threads to the last five.

"All according to plan, of course," you say with a chuckle. "Did your book end well?"
"The mystery was rather contrived, but I suppose it did end well," Marianne says as she places her book on the couch and stands up. "So what brings you back here?"
"I figured that I ought to make sure that I had plenty of time to get changed," you reply.

"That makes sense," Marianne shrugs. "What were you up to since I left, playing with swords or somthing similar?"
"I actually haven't done anything sword-related all say," you reply with a salute. "I had breakfast with Luciana and then hung out with everyone else for a bit, that's all," you reply, making a point to omit Nicolette's love confession.

"...oh yeah- I did end up challenging Marius to a drawing competition while I was visiting..." you say as you reach into your breast pocket and pull out the sketchbook that you used. "Naturally, I lost handily."
"As if there was any way that you'd have been able to..." Marianne says as she takes the sketchbook from you and flips through it.

"...is this a picture of your sister?" Marianne asks as she inspects your drawing. "I have to admit that you're in no way bad at this..."
"Uh, thanks," you reply, not having expected to hear praise from her.
"To be honest, I was expecting something along the lines of that cute doodle from your note yesterday," she says as she hands you the notebook back.

Taking the notebook and flipping it closed, you start towards your bedroom to get changed... but then you remember something IMPORTANT.

"Oh yeah... Marianne?" you say, turning back to her.
"What is it?" the Princess replies.
"Would you happen to know Agnes Eschenwald?"
"...the name's familiar... oh. She's the grandmother of that man who you said was your mentor."

"Yeah, me and Citrine ran into her at the cemetary yesterday," you say.

Brief, but comprehensive.

Let her know that we're more than willing to explain anything more in-depth, but that we'd rather not sour her mood before what is already shaping up to be a bit of an arduous day, and that we don't want to have to cram everything in when we're on a deadline.

Also leaves open a future avenue for her to ask us to talk about more personal things when she feels like opening up more, which is nice.

Marianne would seem like a cat person, that or Reinhold.

You know, unless in the off-chance that Marianne happens to be allergic to cats, or fur in general.

Luciana's the only one who would get you in trouble here in Marconetti, really. Nicolette's also a risk due to being Celestino's niece, but the same goes for her- don't brag about it, act posessive or otherwise flaunt it and nobody will even know (aside from Gregory)

Sylvie isn't an issue since anyone who knows that she's royalty also knows that her father is Vincent, and he's kind of feared by the whole of Marconetti's noble class. Don't nobody want no part of that.

Who would you have in mind?

I guess Emilio, but he sort of already lost from the beginning. He isn't really too legitimate, right? Marianne's old bodyguard wouldn't work either, and we still haven't got a name drop for him yet.

I wonder if he'll be at this party.
>>
>>28815626

>>
>>28815610
I agree with you. Marie isn't dumb, she's being allowed to marry for love but she's still got to consider what's good for Granache. So unless Rein can apply he's learned from attending all her classes and prove he's awesome in battle and such he's out of the running.

Not good enough for Granache =/= not good enough for Marie.

>>28815623
Also this. Dealing with him kind of makes the rival thing unnecessary from a dramatic perspective, actually.
>>
>>28815632
Considering it's HIS party, yeah, safe assumption.
>>
>>28815623

Well THAT would have been fairly straightforward to deal with.
>>
>>28815623

that guy is dead if he shows his face. Not likely. And theres no reason to marry him, romantically or politically.

Possibly but i'm seeing a scenario where marie is forced to marry for the good of the kingdom rather than just for love.

It wouldn't be about romance. It'd be about revenge. He reacted badly enough to her initial rejection; imagine what his reaction would be if word got out that she fell in love with THE VERY NEXT BODYGUARD AFTER HIM.

The most dangerous threat behind a well-prepared one is an unstable one.
>>
>>28815632
she's a princess, the next queen of a kingdom, this won't be the last time she will be invited to social events with some agenda.
>>
>>28815673
we're talking about rivals for her affection, both from a romantic and a "kingdom's best interest" viewpoint. the last body guard may wind up an antagonist, but he doesn't fit in with what we're talking about at all
>>
>>28815694
fuck rivals, Rein just needs to win all the tournaments that will be held and remain her bodyguard.

she won't be seeing any other males other than political ones, which she hates to a default.
>>
"One minute, let me get a head-start on getting changed..." you say as you quickly head into your bedroom and put on your dress pants, then head back out into the living room as you button up your shirt.

"...I figure that it'd make more sense if I told you about my background..." you say as you continue fastening the annoying number of buttons on your shirt. "If you want, I mean."
"Um- I already got the impression from before that it's not exactly a happy thing, so you don't have to..." Marianne says, blushing slightly as she makes a point to turn away from you. "...I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't interested, though."
"So that's a yes, then? Alright..."

You then tell her the story of pretty much your entire childhood, leaving out the most unpleasant bits because you honestly don't much care for recalling them yourself. Your life at the brothel, when Citrine came into your life, the short time you spent with Volker... all of it.

>Give Marianne your backstory? (full/abridged/whatever)
People voted for the full backstory, He could have just as easily given her the stage notes, or no backstory at all.
>>
>>28815831
Then you lack reading comprehension. Go educate yourself instead of sterring the shit here.
>>
>>28815842
Yeah, that was the intent of the choice, or you could have just as easily said nothing at all.
Admittedly, I could have worded it better.
>>
>>28815850
>backstory
backstory with WHO? It was a vague option. It could have meant backstory with the brothel, or maybe backstory with Volkier

I assumed backstory with Volkier, because that's who we were talking about, Volkier.

These threads wouldn't devolve into shitstorms if you didn't act like a dick.
>>
>>28815857
It might have been better to write it like we told her about Volker and filled in the blanks from what we told her last time she got the backstory info. It kind of feels like we just repeated things we already told her.
>>
>>28815831
I agree cept I'm not complaining or anything as this works fine. (and we can actually see a bit more backstory maybe). Just thought it was going in a bit different direction
>>
>>28815880
Well, this is a lot to dump on her before the party.

This is supposed to be a serious/lighthearted time, and we just dumped how crappy our life has been.
>>
>>28815831
It's herding in the sense of:
>>Give Marianne your backstory? (full/abridged/whatever)

He made that the, and only option without prompt by other people, and lately we've been telling everyone our backstory. Yes, he could have offered a 'no', but PG/tg/ is pretty predictable when it comes to girls. It's likely you have a different definition of 'herding', but that's what I meant.

I'm not going to argue about this, hence why I ignored other responses. Just wanted to clarify.
>>
>>28815744

And by the time you finish the story, Marianne is visibly distressed.

"Aw, crap..." you mumble. "I didn't mean to get you all depressed because of my admittedly awful life."
"N- no," Marianne says, dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief. "I did pry... though I had no idea that you'd gone through so much. And your usual demeanor really doesn't suggest such a thing..."
"Eh, I have plenty of my own issues," you reply. "But the main reason I was able to come out of it mostly okay is because Citrine was there to keep me from flipping out."

"But, uh... oh yeah, the entire reason I brought that stuff up," you say, mentally berating yourself for forgetting the main point of the story. "We ran into Volker's grandmother at the party and told her about what happened with him... and she accepted us as her grandchildren."
"...really?" Marianne says, a look of slight surprise on her face. "So what, you're an Eschenwald now?"

Reinhold Eschenwald... it certainly doesn't sound bad.

>>
>>28815868
Look guy, go read it again. And go read the votes. We voted to tell her our full story. If you misunderstood because you lack comprehension, even without your one vote, things would go the same way. Also it doesnt mean railroading because you can't understand what you read. Stop crying will you?
>>
i'm seeing this as more of a "start talking about volker which leads to citrine which leads to whore house which leads to..." kind of thing. we start talking and then just keep talking, with mari too polite/embarrassed to stop us
>>
>>28815910
Why do we keep jumping the gun when it's not official yet? Getting a noble status at this moment only complicates things for us.

Magic also helps a lot in that area. There's a low risk of horrible scarring if you treat an injury quickly enough, and any major injuries incurred on the dueling circuit are treated ASAP.

>>28815998
This is probably pretty close to the case. This whole "having sort of an actual family" is all new and exciting stuff for Reinhold, so he's going to be understandably excited to talk about it.

His friends just happen to be stuck listening to him babbling about his windfall until it finally sinks in that yes, this is actually the state of things now and it's not going to go away just because you didn't acknowledge it hard enough.

>>28816060
I don't think a slightly unusual element is vivisection-worthy. It's not even the most uncommon one! And even if it was, we're probably safe given our willingness to help him out with some of his other experiments ...hopefully.

"I don't think it was anything formal like that, but it is a nice feeling, having a grandmother all of a sudden," you say, smiling. "She said that she'd be attending the party too, so you'll probably be able to meet her there if you want."
"Yes..." Marianne says, "...that would be nice. At the very least, it gives me something pleasant to look forward to during Emilio's party."

"And I should probably get ready now," Marianne says with a sigh as she heads into her room and closes the door behind her.

After putting on your jacket and checking in a mirror to make sure that everything's on correctly and that your hair's presentable, you plop down onto the couch and relax for a bit. From how much Marianne and Nicolette are dreading the party, it's sure to be stressful... as such, you figure that you ought to make the most of what little free time you have left.

After maybe twenty minutes, you hear Marianne's door creaking...

"Umm..." Marianne calls out, her voice wavering. "...would you mind helping me button up the back of my dress?" she sighs. "I'd do it myself, but my fingers can't reach."

she knows full well that was an accident and we've had our hands on her basically every day for dancing lessons, she trusts us, even if she finds this embarassing

I hate the love dodecahedron that seems to be forming around us because I can't just choose a waifu for Reinhold to end up with knowing that it would hurt all of our other potential love interests.

Really, how can we come out of this making everyone happy without going full harem?

The best ship is friendship.

To be honest, as long as they're all still friends in the end, that'd be fine. If they began not liking each other and distancing themselves from another because Reinhold decided to date one of the girls that'd suck dick.

In the end, I'd rather just be friends with all of them, but at the same time that's still shitty if you can't date someone if it's just gonna make others mad.

Really, they'd have to just get over it and move on or something.

Shit's gonna end up like Oreimo if it doesn't. So would that mean Sylvie going to punch someone like how Manami punched Kirino?

Helping button up the backs of dresses is something that you've been doing for as long as you can remember...

"Alright, I'll be right there," you say as you walk over to where Marianne is.

Standing in the doorway, Marianne is holding her long hir out of the way with one hand while attempting to hold the top buttons of the back of her dress together with the other.

"D... don't think that this is some kind of thing, alright?" Marianne says. "I'd normally ask Melanie, but she's not here on duty..."
"No problem, I'll have you buttoned up in a second," you reply as you take either side of the dress's opening in your hands, moving your fingers to locate where the bottom button is.

With that first bit out of the way, it's a piece of cake to get the entire thing buttoned up, And unlike some of the dresses you've helped fasten, you didn't even really have to pull!

>Sylvie going to punch someone

"Alright, you're all set," you say as you step away from the Princess.
"Thank you," Marianne replies, sighing as she lets her hair fall back down her back.

After hurrying back into her room to make sure that everything is where it should be, Marianne heads back out into the living room to where you are.

"I'm ready to go," Marianne says with a sigh. "What about you?"
"I've been ready for a while now," you reply.
"Good," she says, walking to the door. "Come on then, I'd like us not to be late.

With a nod, you follow her out into the hall... where Sylvie, Nicolette and Melanie are already waiting, all in their own dresses.

"Er... were you waiting for me?" Marianne asks, a guilty expression on her face.
"Yeah, Melanie figured that we should all head down to the hall together," Nicolette shrugs. "Less chance in being harassed that way."
"Yes," Melanie nods. "Don't worry, we've only been out here for about ten minutes.

"Sir Gregory's not with you?" you ask, wondering if he's going to pull another Gerhard on you.
"Nah, he went down early," Nicoltte replies.
"So, um... are we all ready to go then?" Sylvie asks.
"If the rest of you are, then I don't see why not," Marianne shrugs.

If all these girls are so afraid and bothered by the potential asshole nobles hitting on them, they should just stay with Gregory. A glare from him should scare away any asshole.

Well next thread we should start trying to pair up Nicolette and Melanie in-story now that we know they both have feelings for each other.
>>
>>28816825
No we don't. For a number of reasons.
We ask nico to give it a rest, its a dick move to do the same thing we dont want done to us.
Melanie doesn't have feelings for nico, even if she does we dont know about it.
>>
Well that was two threads worth of HAPPENING to get caught up on. Good show.
