This is bat country

The sun rises over the mountains to the east, illuminating your path with a yellow-orange glow. The cold morning air bites at your nose, even through your scarf. The horses sway side to side beneath you, as they keep a slow trot going forward. To your left, Anna sits on her mount, breathing into her hands to warm them against the cold. To your right, Diane nods, half asleep, and clutching herself beneath thick robes and hide. When you turn your head around, you see Andre in a cart pulled by a horse tied to yours via a stretch of hempen rope. He is half dressed in armor, snoring in a pile with Leman Russ and all your bedrolls. All is quiet save for the clopping of hooves, and the songs of birds in the bushes and short trees along the road. When day breaks, the three of you that are awake clap your hands together and pray silently, asking for the Father's divine blessing on this perilous journey. Then you hear stumbling and groaning from behind, and look to see Andre sitting up in the cart, sleepily fixing his clothes and armor.

"What? Where are we? Why am I spooning this wolf?"

A) "We're going south."
B) "It's good to know that my best swordsman on this trip is going to have to be roused from his sleep by 6 hours of constant shaking and wobbling."
C) "At least you could give him a kiss when you wake up."

You tell Andre that the least he could do is show some affection after such a wild night, which amuses him. He Finishes adjusting his clothes and attaches his sabers to his belt, then asks how long you've been moving, and where you're going. You explain that it's been over 6 hours since you departed from the Palace, and then give him the details of your mission. He rubs his forehead in frustration.

"Is that why Diane woke me up in the middle of the night? To come with you all to die on some god forsaken desert, fighting some kind of demonic fire cult?"

A) "That's the long and short of it."
B) "We aren't going to die."
C) "Not so much a cult, they do have real magic."
D) "Don't forget the part where we may never go back to our home, and that it might be burned to the ground before we even finish, in which case those of us who live will have to wander the earth spreading the word of the Father of Light along with anyone who drags themselves out of the rubble of the Holy Palace."

Your joke, though well meaning, doesn't fly well with Diane. She shoots you a dirty look, and you come back with a shrug. Andre doesn't seem to mind as much, but he doesn't necessarily look happy to hear it. He lays back down in the cart, scratching Leman Russ and staring at the morning sky.

That evening, after hours of hard travel, you stop to set up camp for your first real rest. All of you are dog tired, with the exception of Leman Russ ironically. You divide up camp chores according to skill. You and Andre forage, Anna sets camp, and Diane prepares rations. Andre and you elect to take the first night off from hunting, since you've got plenty of food and water for now, and there is no game around for miles. You realize as you eat though, while Russ can feed himself effectively, Andre on the team means you'll be eating 33% more food per day. It won't last all the way to the next town, so you'll need to start foraging soon. After the meal is done, Diane comes to you and says, "We have a slight problem. We only packed enough for three people, which is okay as far as food goes, but there are only three sets of everything to share. That includes water-skins, coats, and beds."

You tell her that you can share water, and someone will have to ride in the cart with the blankets anyway, until you can stop for more supplies.

A) "We don't need 3 beds if someone is on watch, and someone should be on watch. There's no telling who may know what we're doing, or if there are brigands about."

You tell Diane that you won't be needing all three beds as long as you're out in the wild and need someone to be on watch for anyone who may try to do you harm in the night. She agrees, which calms her down, and you all sit down to a meal.

After nearly a week, you arrive at the edge of a town in the night. From the hill where you stop, you see that there is movement, and lights, but much of the town appears to be closed down or sleeping. Andre advises against walking into a place you know little about while it's dark and you may be lead into a trap. Anna and Diane on the other hand, say that there are no reports of hostilities here, and they desperately want to clean up and sleep somewhere soft.

You tell Andre and Diane to wait on the hill and try to stay hidden, while you take Anna and Russ into the town to check it out. Diane voices her disappointment but you stick to your decision and climb up onto your horses. As you begin moving away from the camp, you tell Andre that you'll be back within an hour, and if you aren't to come looking for you and assume hostility. He agrees and asks that you stay safe.

Riding into the town, you pass it's wooden walls and see that the outer edge is mostly homes while commerce and town business must be handled more toward the center. There are a few people wandering the streets, some of them tipsy on wine, but most simply going about their business. So far, nobody seems to look at you oddly, but none are openly welcoming you either.

You and Anna turn toward the nearest inn. Outside you can hear murmuring and glasses from the people inside. You tie your horses to the railing on the porch and walk up the stairs into the front entrance, through swinging doors. Inside there are round tables set around the room, surrounded by chairs. Oil lamps hang from the roof, about two feet over your head, burning to in glass bowls to intensify the light they provide. There are 8 people in sitting spread around the room, some talking and some sitting alone. There is a staircase in the far right corner and a door to the backroom in the far left. Behind a bar at the other side is short, balding man in an apron, serving beer to a dirty looking farmer sitting in a stool. He notices you as you enter and welcomes you halfheartedly. Anna looks around curiously, and Leman Russ sniffs the air to take in the scent of hot meat cooking.

The innkeeper finishes pouring another drink for the farmer and approaches you. He asks if there's anything you'd like, but you tell him no, and instead ask about the town. He tells you the basics, which you already know, but does mention that most people living here worship either the Father of Light or the Moonchilde, but neither are practiced much and there is no place of worship to speak of, as most folks simply gather on a home to hold group service. You ask for the price of two bedrooms with baths, and he offers you the night for 3 gold.

You decide to stay here for the night, and ask the innkeeper to prepare two rooms while you go and fetch your friends. He does so, and you and Anna go back out to inform Diane and Andre. Halfway up the hill, Andre meets you with a worried look. He tells you that while you were gone, he and Diane noticed some people making a lot of commotion at one of the shops near the wall. They practically broke down the door knocking and cam back out with a chest they didn't have when they came in. You consider this information but tell Andre to put it out of his mind until morning.

You head to the rooms pointed out to you by the innkeeper and split them between the five of you, with Anna and you in one with Russ. After a bath and a prayer, you all climb into a somewhat cramped double bed to sleep. As you nod off, you hear metal being hammered in the distance. The next morning you wake, pray and dress. Diane takes Anna and Russ to buy some provisions and gear in town, telling you and Andre to go around and find out what you can. Andre asks to see about the men he saw last night, so you agree and follow him. He leads you to a smithy, but a small and dingy looking one. Inside you hear hammering, but see no smith, assuming he must be somewhere deeper in. When you call, there is no answer and no pause in the pattern of hammering,

You nod to Andre and the two of you enter the shop, careful not to knock over any of the strangely arranged items or make too much noise. The shop seems mostly concerned with kitchen items, but quite fine looking ones at first glance. The knives are sharp and polished to a mirror sheen, and the pots look like they could take a hit from a hammer and be unscratched. Even Andre seems to admire the fine work that's gone into such simple pieces. As you turn further in, you are surprised to see a small, stout man with a thick beard and wild hair, hammering at a cleaver on an anvil. He seems entirely dedicated to his work, and doesn't even look up at you when you approach. You speak up and try to get his attention, but when he sees you he takes a step back and waves his hammer at you.

"Back for more? I gave you every coin I had last night, you vultures, at least give me time to sell something before you come to rob me!"

I laid out so many fine swords and armors, all made with dwarven techniques passed down through my family line for centuries, but as soon as they saw what they could do those dirty crooks took them, and said they would serve as taxes for my business! He tells you that the people who come by are a pack of hooligans whose leader learned fire magic from some dusty old books he bought from a traveling merchant. He isn't very skilled with it, but he knows enough to burn down any building in town with ease, and nobody wants to confront him for fear of getting hurt. They tend to loiter at a tavern on the other end of town, where they kicked out the owner and drank the place dry before they trashed it and made the place their den. You have Andre intimidate one of them by dexterously cutting across the bridge of his nose. The thug panics, but doesn't speak. You take out your own sword and hold it close to his eye, and this finally breaks him. He explains that his bosses power is dangerous, but he doesn't fully know how to use it. You take the pommel of your sword to the head of the thug you were interrogating, and your comrades follow suit. The townspeople emerge from every which direction, curious to see what you've done. You speak to the woman calmly, explaining that you will rid the town of the thugs that have been extorting the people. Many of them seem doubtful, especially the older ones, but you can see that some have been persuaded by your actions against the thugs her. You apologize for being so untidy as they begin carting of the corpses as well as the survivors, and your group starts its way to the hideout.

On the way you do notice some people looking at you funny, most likely because you are armed and armored. You hear one old man whisper a prayer as you pass, wishing you strength, and whether it's his words or divine assistance, you do feel strengthened by it. You draw close to the thugs' hideout, and take up position across the street, out of sight.

You and Andre separate to take positions. Andre finds his way around the fence and leaps up onto a window. As he swings and releases his grip, you leap from the bushes and the both of you come down on the two men like hawks on rats. They don't even have time to be surprised before they are cut and silenced. Andre wipes his saber on of their shirts, and you put away Dad's knife. Now the back yard is secure. You peek in through a window to see what is inside. You spy nine men and three women, all armed, most of them drinking the same muck as the two outside were. You settle in and wait for something to happen, despite Andre urging you to attack. As you wait, you spy Anna and Diane looking into the house from across the road. They aren't doing very well at stealth, but you suppose the people you're up against aren't doing very well at detection, so it comes out even. Eventually you hear loud footsteps descending the staircase, and from them emerges a raggedy man in leather, with his arm around a scantily dressed woman. You take him for the leader. He asks about their money, and one of the men in the room tells him they've collected nearly 2000 gold pieces from the town. He releases the girl and walks over, picking something up from a table. It looks like a chest. Then the leader seems to sour on something, and he starts to look around the room. You fear he may have become aware of you.

You emerge from beneath the table and lunge at the leader, aiming for his neck. You are halfway across the room when the entire gang of them begin standing and preparing for the fight. Then, to your shock, the leader grabs the woman he was just holding and throws her at you. You are forced to step to the side to avoid hitting her, but it's enough time for him to prepare his magic and ignite the air in front of you. You feel the flames hit your abdomen and force you back, then the heat from it takes effect. Andre emerges right as this happens and tries to charge him, but is blocked by two men with battleaxes. He does his best to fend them off, but more approach him. You get back to your feet and move in, targeting the leader again, but he is already set to cast another flame at you. You roll back and narrowly avoid it, then see Andre cut down one axeman only to meet two more with swords.

You draw your Holy Symbol from your robes and say a word in the language of the verses, which ignites you sword with white flames. Most of the thugs in the room immediately stop to awe at the blade, giving Andre time to cut their legs and send them to the ground. The leader of the thugs himself is briefly shocked, and again tries to cast flame at you, but in his panic he allows you enough space to step aside and still close in, cutting his arm clean off from the elbow down. The flames sear the wound shut even as the blade passes through flesh and bone. He falls and screams. Seeing this, all other that remain drop their weapons and surrender.

You lead them all out into the street and have them kneel, then call out the people of the town to see your deed. You inform them that they have their town back, and that with one arm, the leaders flame spells will no longer be a threat. Many of them begin cheering, even as some angrily approach the thugs and begin kicking them as they sit in the dirt. You stop them, claiming that justice needs no insult upon injury, but they are hard to convince. When everything wraps up, you give the chest of stolen money to the mayor, who thanks you, and invites you to stay in town for one more night at his personal expense.

You thank the mayor for his offer, but say that you must be on the road again. After purchasing what you need from the merchants in town, you and your companions climb back into your horses, and start off again. Some of the townsfolk are there to see you off as you leave, waving and wishing you well. That night, as you huddle around the fire, you enjoy fresh meat on bread with cheese from the town, and watch goes by smoothly.

It isn't for another 2 nights that something unforeseen occurs. As you stand on watch, poking at the fire with a long twig, you hear something approaching your camp. The sound of hooves, wagon wheels and whistling emanate from the distance. When your look out into the dark, you spot the light of a lantern dangling and swinging about. You stand and place your hand on your sword, prepared for an enemy, but are pleasantly surprised to see the small dwarf you met in town,

I got it from the mayor the day after you left, and damned if I didn't pack all that I had into a wagon and beat the trail the moment I did. I've been driving this wagon all day and night, trying to put as much distance between me and this pit of a town as fast as this filly will carry me. Oh, but I do rant. I've got something I'd like you to see." He hops down from his horse and leads you to the back of his wagon, lifting the tarp to reveal an shield of wood with an iron frame. It is painted white and bears a yellow mark of the sun, as well as many tiny and intricate symbols you don't recognize. "Those there around the edge are runes used by my people to give things a longer vitality. I'm not master at them, but this shield shouldn't break for any old reason. It's worth near a fortune around these parts, but I suppose it's only kind for you to take it."

You pick the shield up and attach it to your arm. If feels heavier than you'd expect, but then again you've never used a shield before. You smile at the dwarf and thank him for the kind gift, to which he smirks. He goes back to his horse and climbs up, adjusting himself in the saddle. "I hope wherever you're going, you find yourself in good fortune. As for me, I'm of back to Solemnyagrad. It may have plenty of smiths, but at least you can make an honest living!" He laughs and rides around your camp and into the night, whistling the same song as when he approached. When you get back to the fire, Andre is awake and peeking out of his bedroll. He asks what that was about, and you show him your gift. He compliments is, and promptly falls back asleep.

The next few days pass without much conflict, but on the 5th day, you spot some heavy clouds rolling in from the north. You agree to find someplace to stop, if only to ease the worries of the others. You search around for a decent place to stay dry, and with high enough ground in case it floods. You settle on a small cave in the side of a hill nearby, that seems to have nothing but a few bugs in it. After a few minutes of screaming and nearly an hour of you and Andre shooing as many spiders as you can out of the cave, you settle in and bring the horses inside just as the rain begins to come down around you. Quickly the cave becomes cold and dark, but in your hurry to find someplace to go you neglected to bring any wood for a fire, and all your things are in the cart outside, beneath the tarp to keep them dry. Even magic wood doesn't burn when wet. As time goes by, everyone starts getting chilly. The horses start to join together and share warmth. Diane draws her holy symbol and chants a spell that causes it to illuminate, but it gives no heat. The five of you begin huddling together, and rubbing on one another's back for heat.More time goes by and the storm only worsens. Eventually you grow tired, and begin to nod off.

You try to rush to the cart and bring it in before the water gets through your mail, but by the time you get to it it's too late. Now you're colder than before and you can already feel your clothes getting heavy with water. You grab the cart and begin pulling it back. The mud that has formed beneath the wheels makes it incredibly difficult, but you keep at it. Suddenly, something moves in the bushes nearby. When you stop to look, you see nothing. Then a flash of lightning and the boom of thunder, very close by. Leman Russ is barking in the cave. Another rustle of leaves, and you turn to find the source. Nothing again. You place your free hand on your holy symbol, now exposed due to the beasts raking claws, and cast Strength of the Gods. With your remaining good hand, you pull out Dad's knife and try to use the temporary strength boost to your advantage, jumping at and wrestling the beast before it tries to jump at you. You wrap your arm around its neck and try to drive your blade into its back, but it is quick and wriggle's out of your grasp. It runs around behind you and tries to pounce again. It knocks you back into the mud, but you manage to flip over before it goes for the killing blow. Feeling your strength fade, you take one last desperate action. You assume a wide stance and wait for the beast to pounce again, but this time, as it comes at you, you stuff your arm into its jaw and twist your body around to reverse the momentum, and force it into the mud. It struggles beneath your weight, but you push down hard. It finally stops fighting and looks you in the eye, growling and blowing rancid breath in your face. Then you deliver the killing blow, forcing Dad's knife deep into it's chest, until it stops moving all together. You get up, and wipe the mud from your face, then go back to dragging the cart inside. You tell them that while you were fetching the cart, a large cat attacked you and beat you up a bit. You show them your hand, which is bleeding quite a lot now, as well as your torn robes. Anna runs over to dote on you, bringing you over to Diane and begging her to have a look at it. Andre gets up and goes over to the cart. He throws the tarp off of it and begins unpacking the things you'll need to spend the night in the cave, including bedrolls and your everburning log. When he reaches for the rations, you mention that the best that attacked you is still outside, and you can skin it and have it for dinner. You see a sick looking face come over all three of your companions. Clearly not fans of cat meat.

Anna has Diane heal your hand as Andre preps the fire and starts on a hot soup to keep you warm through the night. Anna forces you to remove most of your clothes and hang them over the smouldering fire to dry as you sleep. Night draws close, and the cave grows dark and cold by the minute. You think only a fool would wander around the wild in all this rain, but you can't help but worry. Leman Russ does eventually come up behind you and attempt to make a pile, and you pet his ears before letting him rest against your lower back. You decide to call it a night, and go over to Andre to kick him awake for his shift. He reluctantly rises from his bed and stumbles over to the fire, where he plops down, yawns, and begins warming a piece of bread for a snack. Leman Russ is kind enough to lend his warmth to Andre as well. You go over to Anna's bed with your pillow and slid in, immediately soothed by the warmth stored in it from her body. You bring yourself close to her, and feel her wiggle next to you. She look up at you through sleepy eyes, "You're freezing.". She then rests her pillow between your chest and your arm as always, and the two of you fall asleep.

The next morning you wake to sore muscles and a dry throat. You can't seem to find the will to crawl out of bed, and even when you try your arms won't lift your weight. You call to Diane, and she examines you, feeling your forehead and looking at your tongue. It seems you've come ill with something from yesterday. Try as you might to get up, and move around, every moment you're standing you're struggling not to topple over. Dine tells you to rest, while she and Andre pack up the wagon. Anna feeds you rewarmed soup and helps you into the back of the cart, covering you in the blankets to keep you warm. Before you set off on the road again, Diane reaches into a bag in the cart and produces a bottle of blue-green liquid, telling you to drink some. She explains that it will put you to sleep until you feel better.

Leman Russ leaps in with you, causing immense pain, but you appreciate the company. You begin to nod off soon, staring at the clouds as they change shape. And color. And then into flowers and bunnies. And then into horrible, fire spitting demons.
