"I win!"
You lurch from your slumber, exclaiming your victory in the previous night's drinking contest. You immediately follow this announcement with an equally loud exclamation of pain as your head strikes the wood of the bunk above you.

"A bit early to say that innit?" A voice drawls from the top bunk. "You ha'nt even set foot in the pits yet."

Pits? What is he talking about? For that matter, where are you now? It looks like a cramped barracks of some sort, with simple bunk beds packed into a tiny, low-ceilinged room on either side of a narrow, straw-covered dirt aisleway. There are no windows, the only light coming from a lantern flickering from one end of the aisleway.

You struggle to recall the events of the previous night, but other than your victory over Kotori in the drinking contest -- that much you can clearly remember -- it's all a hazy blur. The painful throbbing in your head (only partly due to the blow against the upper bunk just now) makes it hard to focus.
With a start, you realize that you don't even have your coin purse on you. Fortunately, you do remember dropping the majority of your gear off even before going to dinner, so you know most of that should be safe, but right now all you have on you is the clothes on your back and the dagger sheathed hidden in your boot.

"So," you ask your bunkmate as you rub your aching head, "who are you? And where are we?"

"Name's Kalid the Crasher," the man on the other side of the board above you replies. "Pit name, anywise. And tha's where y'are, innit? The fightin' pits. Well, the barracks for 'em, anywise."

"Fighting pits? But that sort of thing's illegal here in Kethyria, isn't it?"

Kalid laughs raucously, a sound that feels like a hammer whanging against your skull in your current hungover state. "Aye, and nobody ever did nothin' illegal there wouldn' be no city guard, now would there?"

"Say, Kalid, I was out with a woman last night. Would you happen to know what happened to her?"

"They broughtcha in all by your lonesome last night, but tha's no surprise," he replies. "If this lady friend o' yours is in the same sorta shit you is, she'd be in the whorehouse more likely'n not. Or if she's one'a the scrappy bints what's actually worth more here in the pits than as a whore, she'd be in the ladies' barracks."

"Right...and what sort of 'shit' would that be, that gets a guy to wind up here?"

Kalid laughs again, sending another volley of throbbing reverberations through your skull. "Boy, you really were deep in the grog last night, eh? You got yourself a debt to the wrong folks, that's the shit you're in. 'S what all of us is here for, save the crazies who're just itchin' to fuck a bastard up. You slowly haul yourself to your feet, staggering slightly from vertigo as a wave of nausea washes over you. There must be some mistake; you don't owe anyone any debts. And there's no way you could have racked up such a huge debt in one night as to end up here, no matter how drunk you were.

Right?

You turn to thank Kalid for his helpful advice, and find yourself face to face with possibly the biggest, burliest man you've ever seen, covered in scars and missing one eye. You're pretty sure he's bigger than some orcs you've seen, and you wonder just how the rickety wooden structure even supports his bulk (though you're quite glad that it did).

"Best get yourself to the slop hall, boy," Kalid says. "Food here ain't good by any stretch, but it'll clear a hangover right quick. And you'll need it for tonight!"

"Right, thank you, Kalid."

There's only one way out of the bunk room, the door at the end of the aisleway with the lantern. Heading out, you see a rather seedy-looking guard leaning against the wall outside the bunk room. A hallway leads off to your right, opening out to what looks like a mess hall, crowded with people.

>[] Head to the mess hall and ask around there about figuring out how you got here

>>
>>28726406
The fact that QM put us in this situation at all, with no foreshadowing or warning or any chance to avoid it, concerns me greatly.
There was no mention of shady characters, and no indication that this sort of pit fighting even existed. Everyone simply assumed we'd get hilarious shenanigans upon waking up.

That doesn't excuse changing the entire tone of the story based on one diceroll, especially when there was so much confusion about exactly which roll counted, and the fact there was only 1 vote's difference is whether we re-rolled or not.
Which was completely fucking retarded, by the way. We get one re-roll per thread; we don't use it, we lose it. People just wanted to keep it because it was funny.

You stop to see what sort of information the guard might be able to provide.
"Sorry, but would you happen to know what exactly got me put in here? My memory's a little fuzzy, but I don't recall having any sort of debts or anything."

The guard eyes you up and down, and stifles a laugh. "So you're the new guy, huh? I dunno 'bout the details, but word has it you're s'posed to be king of the pits by the end of tonight." He chuckles a little, saying, "Or so goes the bet your lady friend made. Can't say you really look the part -- better hope your girl wasn't just blowin' hot air about ya!"

"Wait, what was that about my lady friend?"

"Well, like I said, she 'pparently made a bet with the boss hisself that you could kick the ass of every fighter in the pits, even the current champion!"

"So, wait, does that mean I'm free to go? I'm not here because I owe any debts myself or anything?"

"Well, I s'pose you could go if you like...if you like your lady friend to lose her bet, that is. Word is she made quite the hefty wager, and if you back out she'd lose by default."

"Well, rumor has it this high-rolling lady of yours is staying with the boss as a special guest for the time being...Oy, oy, not *that* kind of 'special guest'!", he exclaims, catching the look in your eye. "The boss may not be a 'respectable' man by reg'lar standards, but he knows how to do right by a person. Honor among thieves and all that, yeah? Your lady friend couldn't be in safer hands, an' that's a fact!"

"So, would I be able to go see her?"

"Well, you'd be free to leave here and look for her if you like. Far as I know, the guild ain't got nothing on you, you're just here for the bet. When you ask the guard about getting a messenger sent to bring Kotori, he advises you to talk to the folks manning the main gate down the wide hallway leading out from the slop hall. Doing so, you manage to get a messenger sent off on your behalf with little fuss.

While waiting for the messenger to return with Kotori, you head to the slop hall to get some of its titular foodstuff. The name about sums it up -- the sludgy gruel you're served is anything but appealing, whether to the eyes or the palate, and you'd rather not wonder just what exactly goes into it. However, it does fill your belly, and with that and some water in you your hangover starts to abate. Plus, as an adventurer, it's not like you haven't had your share of unpleasant meals in the past. Better than goblin bread, anyway.

As you eat, you look around the slop hall to get a look at what you presume is going to be your competition for tonight. It's a rather motley assortment of misfits, to be sure, but not very many who look like they'd be all that dangerous in a fight. Or at least not dangerous to you, anyway -- they're certainly not types your average person would like to meet in a dark alley, but compared to the orcs and other such nasties you're used to, they shouldn't be too tough. You'd guess the only one here who could really give you a proper run for your money would be Kalid...though there is one here in the slop hall you're not entirely sure of.
>>
>>28728024
An then Kotori was a slave. The end.

>>
>>28728043
Sitting alone in a corner of the slop hall is a girl with shortish black hair and a stony-eyed glare. She doesn't look like much -- pretty average build, from what you can tell -- but the way the others seem to treat her makes you wonder. Perhaps it's just her particularly unsociable attitude and uninviting expression that's making everyone avoid her, but the glances you catch people shooting her way and the hushed conversations accompanying those glances suggest something more than that. You wonder if she might perhaps be a mage. Is magic even allowed in these pit fights? You're not sure.

At any rate, about an hour after you've finished your meal you get called up to the main gate, where you're informed that the messenger has returned with Kotori. You're escorted out the gate and through a winding series of tunnels until you finally emerge from a trap door into the back room of some inn or another. Heading out into the common room, you find Kotori seated at a table wearing an astonishingly fancy dress, quite different from her normal attire.

"Yes?"

"That was a joke. Just trying to lighten the mood a little."

"O-oh." She giggles sheepishly, blushing in embarrassment. "I guess you're alright then, Producer?"

"Well enough, for waking up in a cramped underground barracks with no knowledge of how I got there. But honestly, Kotori, what were you thinking?"

"I don't know! Like you said, you won -- I was worse off than you last night!"

They've provided a meeting with Kotori and actually have outlined what P-San can do and that they have nothing against him even when they could have since he obviously remembers nothing.

That speaks to at least some level of integrity to the conduct of its members.

Furthermore I am not prepared to risk the girls against an organisation like this. Remember this is suppose to be a guild. That means the organisation in the city is a CHAPTER of the guild and not standalone by itself. Much like there are Adventurer guild chapters in various places. And the main danger is not a straight up fight. This is a Thieves Guild, which means they'll be happy to wait until our guard is down before striking. Some might fight us head on but they can and will play the waiting game and take us down one by one, especially when our girls are on a assignments.

No. Let the organisation stay. It's been here too long.

"Alright, bring me up to speed. How'd we wind up in this mess?"

Kotori explains the events of the previous night, as she'd been told them by this Mr. Reedfeld:
At the point where he'd crossed your paths last night, you were challenging everyone who'd accept to various contests of strength -- arm wrestling, actual wrestling, lifting heavy objects, whatever they'd agree to. And you were doing quite well; in fact, you'd managed to best every comer so far. So you and Kotori were both in rather high spirits, and kept boasting about your strength and fighting prowess. At some point, one of you had apparently boldly claimed that you could beat anyone in a fight. Mr. Reedfeld then asked if you thought you could beat even his strongest warrior, and Kotori replied that you'd beat not only his strongest, but ALL of his warriors. When asked if she'd care to put a bet on that claim, she rashly agreed, and the wager was made: if you could beat all of Mr. Reedfeld's warriors in single combat, Kotori would win a rather dizzying sum of money -- a whopping 1200 silver pieces, 50 for each of the 2 dozen fighters defeated. If you lost at any point in the gauntlet of challenges, however, Kotori would owe Mr. Reedfeld 600 silver pieces, regardless of how many opponents you managed to defeat before the point of elimination.

The fights would not be to the death (the thieves' guild prefers to avoid lethality, seeing as dead men aren't much good for making money in any way and require a lot of effort to keep from attracting unwanted attention from the city guard), but serious injury would not be out of the question. The thieves' guild does have a healer mage in on their pit fighting operation, but receiving treatment would cost you.

You do learn, to your relief, that your money is safe and sound -- Kotori took it for safekeeping before you were taken to the pit fighters' barracks. Getting your coinpurse from her, you find yourself actually down in funds from before your drinking began last night, despite the fact that you'd apparently won a fair amount from winning at your various contests of strength. The cause of this would apparently be the bit of parchment folded up in the purse; it would appear that you'd spent your winnings on a deed to a plot of land outside the city. Seeing the parchment jogs your memory a little; you vaguely recall a man offering to sell a little old farm, which you'd foolishly jumped at because, in your drunken logic, you were looking for a place to live in the area. Rather run down, you believe he'd said, but a steal for what you paid for it.

>>28729987
"Well," you say after Kotori finishes her explanation, "so much for my sabbatical. Did this Reedfeld guy tell you any other terms of the bet? Like, conditions of the combat, what sort of equipment, that kind of thing?"

"I didn't look at it too closely before, but I think there was something like that in the contract," she says. "Let me check."

"There's actually a contract?"

"Yes, apparently it's standard practice for them when it comes to bets of this scale...helps to keep people from backing out of it, I'm told." She produces an envelope, opening it to take out the paper within and unfolds it to read. "Yes, here it is, Terms of the Challenge...oh...um..." You see her face growing red as she looks over the paper. "S-shall I read it off to you?", she asks.

"It'd be easier just to give it to me to read, wouldn't it?"

"N-no, really, I insist!"

>[] Well, alright then.
>[] Yeah, no, lemme see that contract
>>
>>28729987

Double check the terms of the fight.

How much rest is there between fights and the terms? Is it till the opponent yields?

"Yeah, no, lemme see that contract," you say as you snatch the paper from her hands.

Looking over the section headed "Terms of the Challenge", you find a fairly thorough detailing of the way the fight will be organized, laid out in stilted legal language. In addition to the details Kotori had already told you, you find that the fights will be organized in order from the lowest to highest ranked combatant from the pit fighting roster. You are to face each opponent one-on-one, fighting until one combatant yields or is rendered unfit to fight. Killing opponents is strongly discouraged; while you will not be disqualified, you will be made to pay a blood price for the fighter killed, which may range from 10 to 75 silver depending on the rank of the opponent.
Between each match, you will be allowed a quarter hour to rest and, if needed, obtain healing. You may bring your own healing potions, or purchase healing services from the pit healer; potions would probably be the more cost-effective. You are permitted to bring your own equipment, but only weapons and armor (including shield); anything else is prohibited for use during the fights. Magic is strictly prohibited during the fights, and only healing is permitted between fights.
Finally, at the end of the list, in different handwriting from the rest -- handwriting that looks like Kotori's, albeit made somewhat clumsier than normal by drink -- is a rather odd stipulation...

You simply fix Kotori with a wordless stare, mouth agape in a mixture of bewilderment and dismay. A simple expression purely expressing the very essence of "what in the everloving name of all that is holy is this shit?"

Kotori buries her face in her hands, face and ears solid beet red as she shrieks, "I was drunk, okay?!"

>>
>>28731094
We made a decision to take a break from adventuring, and now you're throwing us into 24 consecutive fights.
And we can't lose a single one or Kotori goes 600 silvers into debt with the fucking thieves' guild.
On the basis of a single diceroll that was ONE FUCKING VOTE away from being rerolled.

>>28731294
i know you don't like me much, but as players to this BS, we can STILL get around this. just quietly contact the girls, all of them, and have them work with the town guard/police to raid the place when we fight to catch them in a criminal act. we have a freaking document to PROVE they are breaking the law! we can still win over this.
>>
>>28731383
I'm fine with interesting situations.
I'm not fine with what is essentially railroading that runs directly counter to players' decisions for what their character should be doing.
>>
>>28731113
As stated earlier, the penalty for losing is 600 silver pieces owed to Mr. Reedfeld. If Kotori is unable to pay it, then she might be taken and put to work to pay it off. However, she'd most likely only be abducted and put to work in one of the thieves' guild's operations if she failed to keep up with prescribed payments from her normal work. Exact terms of repayment if she can't pay up front would be negotiated at the time payment is demanded, but generally speaking the thieves' guild isn't interested in ruining people's lives for the hell of it. They're not outright malevolent, they just have very loose morals when it comes to making money. They'll make sure they get their money one way or another, but if they can do it in a way that avoids drawing too much attention (which taking somebody away from their normal life to work off their debt in one of the thieves' guild's illicit operations would), they'll prefer that option.

Of course, whatever way the debt's getting paid off, if it's not paid in a lump sum right away you can be pretty sure there will be rather steep interest rates applied.

>>28731203
Give me a minute, running out of post space and I'll get some quicker stuff before launching in on thieves' guilds.

>>
>>28731483

Look at it this way, we have no hope of actually fighting our way out of this. It'll lead to the destruction of everything P-San hold dear.

What we want though, can be achieved by a renegotiation of the contract.

We do well enough, we can offer our services temporarily to the Guild as a paid fighter in the arena for a set term in exchange for the bet being written off.
>>
>>28731581
Who says we wont be able to beat these guys?
>>
>>28731203
Ok, so, thieves' guilds. Only mentioned in passing in the quest itself so far, but in the background info pastebins they're noted as basically the outlaw counterpart to adventurers' guilds. Often have similar skillsets to adventurers, but willing to take on illegal operations, while adventurers tend to stay above-board. Thieves' guilds are also basically like the mafia. They run all kinds of criminal enterprises -- whatever's profitable, really. Obviously, here in Kethyria the thieves' guild does a fair amount of loan sharking and other such things that will put people in debt, and will then put people to work in their various other illicit operations to pay off those debts if need be.

Thieves' guilds are pretty ubiquitous, with at least a small presence in most decent-sized towns. They also tend to be more extensively interconnected across regions than adventurers' guilds; adventurers' guilds are often essentially independent competitors with each other, barring very major, successful ones like 961Pro, but thieves' guilds tend to band together and run back to a central core. It helps them stand up better against law enforcement. When driven out of an area, they'll often come back fairly quickly; their like weeds all springing from a common underground root system. For a thieves guild as apparently extensive and well-organized as the one here is, it has to be quite deep-rooted indeed, particularly since big cities have tighter regulation than smaller settlements.
>>
You and all your buddies are Autistic, you know!
>>
>>28731567

> if you could beat all of Mr.

From what I read, I see that we earn on a per fight basis but get saddled with an automatic 600 silver debt if we lose, not forfeit all the silver.
>>
>>28731601

I'm offering an alternative suggestion that might be profitable to both parties in the event that it looks unlikely. We might still wipe the floor with them but it is something to keep in mind.

This whole bet is a sideshow. They make their money more from ticket sales and bets. If we can provide entertainment, they'll want it.
>>
>>28731547
it's too late now to keep it down low is it? this is a golden chance to bust crime in town and improve 75pro's reputation at the same time and you are just tossing it away. i KNOW these guys are assholes becouse i have dealt with people them them IRL, they don't change much here either. They will ruin your life one way or another, the stigma of this if we keep this on the down low can and will come back to bite us. the QM even said so with bad decisions. you think they will not go to 765pro and tell them what we did? more so if Kotori has to go to work for them! Miki is already has a major loss of trust in us already, this will make it worse. think will you.

There was so much confusion regarding which was the actual dice roll that counted, and the discussion went on LONG after the actual story posts ended. A lot of people would have left by that point, and the reroll failed BY ONE FUCKING VOTE.
ONE.
You are punishing the players who were taking this quest seriously based on the influence of those who were not, and in the process you are making a mockery of the concept of player agency.

>>
>>28731546
>>28731619 has the right interpretation. Putting basic in-character knowledge of how thieves' guilds tend to operate together with the terms of the contract, you can pretty safely guess that this Reedfeld guy is pretty skeptical of your ability to tackle so many consecutive fights, and/or is expecting to make enough from the spectators that it doesn't matter to him if Kotori's bet itself is a loss. It's probably a win-win situation for the thieves' guild, even with the relatively generous terms of the bet.

>>28731564
To be fair to the other players, it might help if you hadn't been such a sourpuss the whole thread.

>>28731693
Even before the matter of the roll itself, the decision to have a drinking contest in an unfamiliar city in the first place was a pretty poor one, and that vote was enthusiastically unanimous. Copious amounts of judgment- and inhibition-impairing substances when you've recently had major issues with a serious problem related to self-control? All things considered, this is on the better end of the possible outcomes for bad rolls on all parameters in such a situation.
And even if a lot of the people had left, there were still quite a few votes in on the reroll. In fact, more votes than I'm used to seeing on issues in general.

>>28731705
>do they go into blackmail as well QM?
Oh, naturally.
>>
Also, just as a general note to everyone being all Chicken Little over this: deep breaths, please.

I have no more desire to see this quest cut short in a bad end than you do. I enjoy writing this, I enjoy seeing what you guys get up to, I want to see this continue. And frankly speaking, I'm really not looking to make this a super serious and dark quest. I took a definite dip in that direction recently (frankly, probably more than I should have, in retrospect; it's a bit late to go back on it now, but if I could do it over I'd definitely do it differently), but I have no intention of maintaining that sort of tone for the majority of the quest.

This doesn't mean I'm going to coddle when bad decisions get coupled with crappy dice rolls, but as much as makes sense the setbacks sustained from such will be ones that set up new adventures, not GAME OVER. That's what I'm aiming for here. It's not a perfect world, there's some not-so-nice stuff out there, and shit can get hairy sometimes, as a meta perspective that darkness is just there to give contrast to the light when the heroes win in the end. I like happy endings, and I'm not going to deny that (especially for an iM@S quest, ffs) unless you guys really go persistently full retard (we're talking consistent strings of terrible decisions here, not isolated episodes like this) and leave me with no other reasonable outcome.

>Copious amounts of judgment- and inhibition-impairing substances when you've recently had major issues with a serious problem related to self-control?
You yourself made it quite clear that it was blood and combat that triggered our 'episodes' and OH LOOK WHERE WE ARE NOW. GEE. THIS SURE IS UNFORTUNATE.

>it'll provide combat from the constant SOL I was expecting when we said we'll stop adventuring for a while.
Here's the thing; we actually voted to stop adventuring. That was a decision we made. We wanted to take time out to sort out our shit and make sure it wouldn't keep happening.
Frankly, the first chance I get I'm going to be voting for MAXIMUM BLOOD, MAXIMUM DEATH because that's clearly all QM wants to see from P-san.

As is your right.

And i will be exercising mine to vote against that.

Ah, but QM will be pushing us into situations where the only way out is to use our Berserker power. That's the entire reason he forced it on us in the first place, after all. And one bad roll, just ONE, and every motherfucker in the room is dead.
Of course, depending on the scale rate for the kill penalties, we could come out with a profit even if we kill every one of his fighters.
And since we can't afford to lose even a single fight, we'll have no reason not to use every advantage we can get.
So you see, I don't even need to vote at all. I already know I've won, and I already know how this arc will end; with P-san soaked in blood, and Kotori completely terrified of him.

... this is a rather dicey outcome - I sure missed a lot. Hopefully the dice gods don't fuck us over next session.

Seems I fell alseep and missed sime drama.

Now to parse through and see what's relevant to adventure.
