On your way back to the pyramid to bring the priests an offer from the Archers' School, you've been surrounded and confronted by members of the Slingers' School. You remember that they hate the Archers. You hope they don't know where you just came from.

"Savior of the city?" a voice asks. "Then who will save the city from you?"

> Get defensive about your new role
> Get friendly. Play the innocent little girl.

You find that acting like an innocent 12-year-old can be useful. Then you remember that you *are* an innocent 12-year-old. Well, maybe not innocent. "Hello, my name is Hunzuu. What's your name?"

The source of he voice drops down from a balcony. It's a white-bearded man with statuesque muscles. Like the others, he has a cord tied around his head. "We are the people. And we've been watching you, Hunzuu. You've been breaking bread with the high and mighty. The priests. The king. The Footmen. So I thought we would talk. This city has a lot of problems, I'm sure you know. What would you say is its biggest problem?

All the other problems the city faces can be solved if the city presents a unified face. Foreign armies and monsters can be slain with cooperation ,teamwork, and superior tactics. Knowledge can be shared and tested safely without fear of reprisal by groups of equals. Even Pazuzu can be turned away if the entire city stands as one against him. But in order for any of that to happen, the Footmen must stop their brazen power play and bullying of their equals. "Hah! Like you?"
"Yes, like me. It's not great being like this. And this in the wrong hands would be really bad."

The graybeard looks to some of his allies, and they not to each other, silently concurring. He turns back to you. "So the priests have not made you one of them. You still have a mind of your own. That's good. We know where yo come from, Hunzuu, and we know what happened to your friends. That's why I hope you will help us. Tomorrow night we move against the Footmen. They will be out in force, making sure people return to their homes after the festival for Shamash. We will make their patrols bleed. Meanwhile, their base will be weakly guarded. You propose to help the Slingers send out some night patrols of their own, showing up in person with them to dissuade the Footmen from doing anything about it.

He seems to like that idea. "Taking back the streets. It's a start. What I want eventually is streets that don't need to be owned, no more curfews, only as many patrols as there used to be in the time of the last king. But this would be a start. When can you start?

> Why not tonight?
> Tomorrow night. They'll really not want to start anything during the festival.

>>
>>28714898
>Why not tonight?
Festivals are ALWAYS when things start.
>>
>>28714792
Needs more combined arms. set up teams of volunteers. 2 slingers and 2 temple guards. They stay together at all times. They patrol as one. They always stay within sight of at least one other group. Two-man teams of archers sit on over third rooftop during patrols to watch over everything. I stay in the center of town. If the Footmen mass up to overwhelm a group, they can use simple whistles made of straw and reeds. I'll come running and other groups can converge. IF the footmen come for the patrols, the archers can discourage them from on-high. If they attempt to climb a building or tear it down, the patrols can stop them. Strength through different skills cooperating.
>>
>>28714898
>> Why not tonight?
Everyone know that something bad is always bound to occur during a festival.
>>
>>28714898
>Why not tonight?

"Why don't you come talk to the Pyramid guard. They don't like that the Footmen have taken the city at night either. If we can work together, it'll be easier.

Even if they don't want to help, I'll still patrol with you."
>>
>>28714927
>archers

The archers won't help. Not unless we could pay them enough for it.

But working together is a good idea in general.

If the Pyramid guards are willing to join up, this could be a lot easier.

Hunzuu is somewhere central, and every time the Footmen start some shit, the use a signal or send a runner to fetch her.

Sounds like a good plan.
>>
Just want to put this out there, all of the disparate factions are all but falling over one another for our support on who should rule this city state...all of them are short sighted or self important after a point. I mean when a 12 year old girl can see what's wrong like this, and see the inherent idiocy of all the layered politics and deception, it is a problem.

There needs to be a proper Regent to make decisions in the name of the King until the next generation or the king gets his head on straight. Unify the army. Make the king a figure head. Create two councils (one of the priests and nobility and one of the former school heads and representatives of the populous at large) then, we eat a raw goat because mission mostly accomplished and we're probably hungry.

From the look of things they've taken to skipping the part where they add human bits to the monsters. They probably decided full monsters would be easier to control.

There is no way this will end in anything other than disaster.

You wait for them to finish, worried what he'll think of you. The Blood Priest directs him to the same feast room where you had your first meal as a scorpion. He excuses himself to clean himself up before joining the festivities. The centaur goes where he is directed with an amused indifference.

You follow the Blood Priest and tell him about the deal with the Archers' School. "They want monsters of their own, eh? Let them try. We already have two, soon to be three! Their magic is weak. They'll give up and sell their share of relics back to us because all they care about is money."

I think we need to lay down the law with WHO they can sacrifice.

The Footmen snatched him off the street and tortured him. It's unclear what, if anything, he did.

Bitch-slappings may be needed as a result. We need to lay down the law with these murderhobo Priests.

Hell, they could have been repeated offenders, and the footmen (or whoever it was) knew about them, and decided to end their days of stealing. They could even just be mercenaries, hired by the granary's owner (if it doesn't belong to the city itself) to resolve the situation.

The Blood Priest pats your claw. "Don't worry, Hunzuu. Just because we're making more monsters doesn't mean we don't love you! We love all our monsters the same."

Your plan to guilt him into not making more monsters didn't work. So you try the direct approach. "You know that mole-woman I killed? The whole reason she attacked us is because I told her I was a human made into a monster. The gods don't like when people do that! This is gonna end badly. Also, Pazuzu is coming. That's gonna be really bad."

"A lot of bad things are coming for us. That's why we have to create beings like you to defend ourselves! If the gods would prefer for us to just keel over and die, I must respectfully disagree."

"Just don't use Tabni-Ninsun. I think she's going a little crazy."

"Hah! Wouldn't dream of it. I'll get some guard's daughter, or one of the girls who wasn't a complete failure last time."

He pauses for a moment. He might be afraid of you. But his reply is calm, "That's why we made you. And taking back the streets from the Footmen is indeed the next step. With archers helping us guard the ruins, we should have a few men to spare to back you up. And Nakurtum. She has a funny knack for survival. She might even survive the five years of service she owes me! Didn't see that coming."

You leave the Blood Priest to wash the blood and bone meal off himself as you head straight to the banquet hall. The centaur seems to be behaving himself, eating a fine array of human food, drinking beer, and laughing with the guards and Nergal-Edir. You rear up and hiss at him.

Now that you've established that you're a big scary monster, you show your softer side. "Hi! I'm Hunzuu. What's your name!"

"Flesh-eater is mad. Surround it!" It charges you, and you catch it in an affectionate but supremely forceful claw-hug.
He keeps swinging his chair leg at empty air. "Ereshkigal! You shall never have me! I spit in your face!" Slowly he realizes that you're not killing him. Nergal-Edir and all the guards laugh.

You set him down. "I told you, my name is Hunzuu."

He lowers his weapon and looks up at you in disbelief. "I, uh... my name is Soul-of-Lightning. My title is Fought-Even-As-The-Waters-Rose."

"No, that's okay! I eat human food. I'm not always comfortable with how I feel when I eat raw meat or meat from my kills...WHICH WERE AWESOME! This giant worm thing that went tearing through the market. Then I got sent to the ruins where they found what they used to make me like this and some other guys were there and unearthed this giant mole woman who started killing everyone. When she heard what I was, that I wasn't exactly what I looked like, she said she was going to show mercy and kill me...I beat her...it was tough...after it was over I tasted a little. Not the person parts on top, just a little of the mole parts that were stuck in my claw. A friend of mine died in that fight, and another was wounded, but with you here, if you're strong, fewer people will have to die!"

"No, that's okay! I eat human food." You demonstrate by eating a small honeycake off a tray. Somehow it doesn't taste as sweet as it should. You tell him truthfully about your battle with the giant maggot. The guards who were there laugh and add their own embellishments. You feel that they're very proud of you.

You take the chance to question Soul-of-Lightning. "Can you tell us about the Flesh Eaters of old?
I met this mole woman who said some worrying things before trying to kill me, I'm seeing visions when I sleep, and I have no idea what any of it means. I'm getting scared."

"Hmm. You are the last flesh-eater, yes? Ereshkigal caught the rest." You nod. "It must be a heavy burden. Even if you do not see yourself as one of them, part of you is toward them. The flesh-eaters were proud and vicious enemies. They would not bend. They fought in the name of Tiamat even long after Tiamat was slain. I will not call them worthy opponents, though. They fought with a hundred different venoms, unworthy weapons." He passes you a jar. "This beer is good! Some crafts are forgotten by humans with time, but others only get better. Have some."

> Explain why you don't touch alcohol because of your mother.
> Maybe you're making too much of a deal out of it. Drink!

On a side note. I've been thinking about our weapons.

I vote we use a poison tipped spear. It'll be much more effective and we, y'know, make our own poison.

We can ask Nakurtum about coating and caring for poisoned weapons. We'll probably need a sleeve to cover it when not being used.

What do you think?
>>
>>28717089

I'll support it, we might even be able to produce different kinds of venom with practice.
>>
>>28717089
>poison tipped spear
I was thinking we could get a sling or some javelins or a bow or something. we've got mellee poison -down-. But a bow could fuck mages from across the battlefield.
>>
>>28717089

It should work fine, I like it. Though I prefer a ranged weapon, since we are already pretty good at melee. Can't sting/stab people if they are away, can we?

Anyway, a hundred different venoms. Who els ebets we need to invest social points in the dream voices to unlock them?
>>

You tell Soul-of-Lightning about how you used to be a human. You never knew who your father was, and your mother kept letting drink get her into trouble until she maimed or killed a man in a drunken brawl. You heard about it after the fact. You never saw her execution. She just disappeared.

He seems moved. "Oh. I am sorry, Hunzuu. My mother runs in the Far Country with the rest of my people. Together we hide from Ereshkigal."

"That's good, I guess. That you still get to see her. So what's that you were saying about a hundred different venoms? I've got just the one. It kills things. Slowly."

"Oh, that. They would make new venoms. With magic, or maybe when they shed their skin. Killing was not enough sport for them, I suppose. Some wanted to kill with more pain, or to dishonor their enemies' bodies, or put their thoughts into their blood, or simply make the meat taste better. The flesh-eaters were decadent."

> He seems all right. Ask him to come with you on your new night patrols.
> The priests want to keep him here and ask him about ancient times, since he's more fragile than you. Let him do that.

>>28717186
If you want a crossbow you'll have to invent one. These people haven't gotten past bows, slings, and javelins.
>>
>>28717133
I was thinking about some throwing javelins. We could easy carry a quiver of short javelins.

They don't have the range of a bow but have the advantage of not taking months of practice to be effective.

Using a bow would be a mid-long term project. We have a lot on our plate right now and the practice needed to use one would take away from other things.

>we've got mellee poison -down-.
We can always be better. No reason to turn down an advantage.

Go see Nakurtum. She might want to come or have some advice for us.
>>
How much weight can our tail hold?
If we wanted to go all out with a bow, we might hold the bow in our claws, then tie a hook to our tail and use that to draw it back. It would be a bit cumbersome at first, but six foot arrows would do a lot of damage.
>>
>>28717224

"Good point. Give it a day or two. But do you have any advice? Th-this'll kind of be my first fight without you."

She shrugs. "Well, there probably won't be any monsters this time! Just units of boring footmen. With men, it's all about psychology. You make them break so you don't have to fight them all. Sometimes men don't think much of me at first because I'm a woman. So I have to get one man to come at me first and make such a bloody mess of him that the rest don't want to go next. Making blood come out in an arc when you pull a weapon out is good. So is making them see bone. Break a leg the right way and thy'll be sick to their stomachs."

"Eew. Well, thanks for the advice. I hope it won't come to that!"

Ask how big the normal Footman patrol groups are. Divide our men into larger groups.

It might mean fewer patrols, but it'll also mean our men won't get fucked if a fight starts.

We start the night doing the rounds of the most public areas.

Get the word out, let them know we're paroling the streets. That alone should make them think twice about starting shit.

After that, set up somewhere central and have the patrols summon you if you're needed somewhere.

Arm up with basic armour, helmet and spear.

She hugs you, and you clawhug her in return. "You're a lot smarter than I was at your age. And bigger. Go get 'em, kid."

You kiss her forehead in parting. You round up s force of guards, including Dadanum, who's now wearing a red cape to partially conceal his mole-woman armor. You organize your men into balanced forces of spearmen and slingers and prepare to take back the night.

You ask the lead Slinger (the muscular grey-bearded guy, whose name turns out to be Rihat) and the other guards and slingers for advice as you stake out an area to watch tonight. They decide that it has to be small enough to let them call on you if needed, but large enough to make a statement. Instead of the area immediately surrounding the pyramid, you decide on a rough part of town, around your old poorhouse, in an area full of citizens sympathetic to the Slingers. It seems to be a fairly average plan.

The sun has set. Soon the Footmen will come to enforce their curfew and do who-knows-what else.

As a team, you've decided on a central location for you to patrol with Dadanum, Rihat, and a couple of slingers, to be called on if needed. After an hour or so, you hear a cry for help.

You open your claws and tear the nets until they're hanging from you in relatively harmless tatters. You're getting sick of their arrogance. "We're just paroling to keep the streets safe. Just like you. We don't have to fight. Since you're not doing anything wrong, are you? Are you?!"

The patrolman rise to their feet and form a ring of spears and shields facing out. "You charged us! Are you saying now that you'd let us go?"

"Yes." You crawl off to one side. They change their formation to keep as many spears on you as possible. When you're relatively close to your own men, they break formation and run in the direction of their barracks.

Once we smack a few around and send them home with their tails between their legs, we'll have sent a fairly strong message.

I'm still in favor of using the footmen as a blood source, if that helps.
>>
>>28718759
I want to avoid open conflict right now for two main reasons.

1) They have hostages. Until we get them back, we're limited in what we can do unless we're willing to sacrifice them.

2) The Footmen are the largest and strongest War School in the city. If we break them, our city is that much weaker.

I think the best solution would be to do 'peace keeping' until the Slingers find where our friends are being kept then assassinate the leadership.

The Footmen as a whole remain strong and intact but get new (less insane and dickish) leaders.

You gather some, but not all, of your patrols. The rest will probably come trickling in later when they hear the commotion. You find a place to wait for their arrival, an open square with a well in the center. Poisoning a well to spite the people seems like something the Footmen would do, Rihat comments. You see a few people watching from the rooftops, with slings in hand, or cudgels, or just pieces of stone or mud brick.

As you'd predicted, the Footmen arrive in force, with more men than you, all heavily armed and armored. You can't see Ninurta-Nasir, but Iltani is right at the vanguard, dressed quite casually, but with red war paint smeared under her eyes. Or at least you hope it's paint.

"Hunzuu, so good to see you again. Did you like my gifts? I hope they suited your refined sense of taste."

"Iltani, we're not doing anything wrong, and we don't want to fight. I just think it's time that the whole city work together to defend itself, not just you."

"If you wanted an army, I could have given you one. You had your chance. Now you've started a war that will leave us weak when Pazuzu comes."

"I didn't start it! You guys have been kidnapping and terrorizing everyone!" You hear a few cheers and shouts of agreement behind you.

Iltani draws her long knives. "That kind of slander is very impolite. I almost don't want to give you the next gift I had planned."

"And what is that?"

"Ninurta-Nasir's head."

> Well, now we're getting somewhere! Bring it to me.

You see that some of the commoners have lost patience and are throwing bricks and sling stones at the Footmen. Most fall short, but one leaden sling bullet flies true and heads right for her head.

With a loud cracking sound, she catches it in her bare hand. She drops it casually. "Because they know true power when they see it."

"Bow." Iltani shivers in pleasure as she thinks she's finally gotten through to you. She bows. "It could have been me. I would have been a glorious queen. But it can still be you. It's not too late. We have a little longer before Pazuzu comes..."

suck out the poison/bring her to the blood priests.
We need someone who can just sort of be -fine- after getting stabbed with poison and a javelin on our side, not dead. Just... stop being so crazy.

Then tell her privately we'll talk about pazuzu once she recovers.

Once we've secured her in a nearby building for the moment, we should talk with the highest ranking Footmen and Slingers present. Sort some shit out.

Now, normally, I'd RIP AND TEAR, but think about it.
We REALLY don't want the general populace thinking we're fucking crazy.

"Lock her up. I don't want any more death, but we can't have anyone causing more infighting."

You bend over her and suck out the venom. This makes her sigh breathily in enjoyment. It almost makes you wish you hadn't. But you're the only one who can do this safely. The venom comes back laced with blood that gives you a little head rush. "No need to lock me up. I'll be good. I never meant to harm you, not really. I just needed to burn away the little human girl so the queen could be born. I can keep helping you. We will be wonderful together."

"Lock her up."

Some slingers approach her, and she only resists by leaning toward you a little and looking into your eyes with insane longing. Some footmen are already negotiating with Rihat. They're talking territory and prisoner exchanges. Rihat volunteers to be taken hostage to assure his people's civil behavior. They seem to think this is a fair idea.

> Let the Slingers keep Iltani. So she's not around any of her former people.
> Make the Footmen take Iltani. They're the only ones who have a base nice enough to lock someone up in.
> Take Iltani yourself. Maybe the priests can turn her into a hyrax or something until you're ready to talk to her again.
> Don't let them take Rihat. No more hostages for anyone. Seriously.
> Tell the Footmen that they can resume total control of patrolling the streets if they stop being such assholes about it and they return all your friends.
>>
>>28720940
Or rather, you assume she can't punch through walls because we haven't put her in a situation where she needs to yet.

Kill her, burn the body and bury the ashes five miles outside the city.
>>
>>28720917
Not sure about others, but I'm against killing her for two reasons.

1) Going RIP'N'TEAR in front of a large crowd of civilians could have negative effects on our PR.

2) She has info on 'The Monster that Monsters Fear'... That shit sounds important. If we kill her, we do it /after/ she tells us what she knows.
>>

> Take Iltani yourself. Maybe the priests can turn her into a hyrax or something until you're ready to talk to her again.

The fuck's hyrax?
>>
>>28720984
Can we like, use a jumbo-heavy duty monster cell in the temple to store her? Do those exist?

Whichever option has the highest rate of not-escape. Not the footmen, they will let her out easy.

And you guys, stop with all this territory talk or whatever. You both patrol now, and if you see each other, you're going to SMILE and WISH THEM A NICE DAY. You got that?
>>
>>28720984
>> Take Iltani yourself. Maybe the priests can turn her into a hyrax or something until you're ready to talk to her again.

And maybe a spell to enforce loyalty/submission.

As a last measure, we could always just use her blood; she fulfills the requirements to be a proper sacrifice. And yes, I voted to spare her. But I'm not so blind to the danger she can represent if left alone.
>>
>>28720984

Let the Slingers negotiate with the Footmen. Bring one of their representatives back to the temple for some negotiation.

I'm torn between taking Iltani ourselves or letting the Slingers do it. We still can't trust the Footmen, even if some progress has been made.

oh, I think the idea is to turn her into a normal hyrax, not a halfman halfhyrax.

The priests did it before. They keep bragging about it.

I'd rather just keep her human and in a cage, with a set of barbells and a training dummy, that cage adjacent to the city walls and ready to be released in an outwards direction at a moment's notice
>>
>>28721224
>Why not suggest mixed patrols?
I like the idea but think that would be a Step 5 or something.

"I'll take her myself. Maybe the priests can restrain her."

"Ooh!" Iltani seems to like the sound of that. What venom remains in her shows up as black traces in her lips and under her fingernails, but she doesn't express any discomfort.

"Quiet, you. As for the rest of you, taking hostages helped get us into this mess in the first place. Just give me back my friends and work out a fair way to watch the streets at night."

Iltani laughs. "Your friends? They make you weak. They let that idiot Ninurta-Nasir play you like a puppet. Let him keep them. It'll give him a false sense of security."

A Footman hits her with the butt of his spear. He has blood on him, so he must have served right next to the man she killed. "We have to apologize. We thought she was just gifted by the gods. She never displayed such an open contempt for her own people before."

"Just let my friends go. Tell you commander that if he doesn't like it, he knows where to find me."

He looks worried. "Well phrase it as a trade. Your friends for the slinger. Maybe he'll see it as a bargain. You have to understand, he can be cruel and bloodthirsty, but he's also the most experienced leader in the city. People respect him. It will be better to placate him. We can't blame him for trusting the witch-woman. We did, too."

The crowd gradually disperses. The slingers even help to subdue the bystanders who were expecting blood. You, Dadanum, and all the pyramid guards escort Iltani back to the pyramid. She mumbles to herself. "Pazuzu... too big for one mind. Trying to make the others understand. Power. Only power..."
