/tg/ we all know about eldritch abominations, both the evil and ambivalent kind. But what about the good kind? What if there was a world where there was no evil or neutral abominations, just good. It's a world where people still try and stop their resurrection and/or awakening.

No one wants to have a 40 headed monstrosity covered mouths and baby limbs perched on the highest point in the city screeching at everybody in every possible language to not smoke and drink. It's so loud you want to look at it but if you even glance at it from the corner of your eye gives you a headache

A world where you could be minding your own business when suddenly a blue blob bubbles out of your kitchen sink, drives you insane while in its presence and when it leaves you find that it redecorating/cleaned your house for you misplacing everything while leaving your bedroom with reversed gravity for some reason and there's a plant with eyes on the dining room table. The eye-plant is on a plate to so you're not sure if it's a gift of food or decoration.

A world where you're lectured by nightmare beasts for accidental littering. A world you fear being bad just a little bit. It's a world of horror.

I despaired as the chanting of the cultists reached it's crescendo. I had sought to prevent the summoning, and failed. Tied to a nearby tree I could only watch in horror as rift opened in the fabric of space above the stone circle they had raised in the midst of this primeval forest.

Through the breach in our reality I witnessed the mad swirling of ultimate chaos. I saw shapes undefinable by euclidean geometry. Strange, indescribable radiations illuminated the scene, as a vast amorphous form forced itself into our reality.

I laughed and howled with madness as the utmost abomination was made manifest before me. I felt reality itself curdle around me and knew our world would never be the same.

My next memory is awakening in the woods. My bonds had been cut, and a blanket draped over me. With a sore throat and stiff limbs I slowly made my way back to my car.

As I drove back to the city the frantic yammering of the radio informed as to what had been unleashed upon our world. AIDS, at long last, had been cured.

It would be a risky gamble. All I had to do was undercut my competitors and make a few shady investments. It meant that some men would lose their jobs, maybe their careers. Good honest men. Nothing illegal about it, it's just strictly business. All I had to do was press enter on the keyboard and I'd be rich! But something is stopping me! It's in the corner watching me. It's looks like something you would get if you crossed a armadillo and a flamingo complete with a upside down dog head and spray painted puke yellow. It's not doing anything but watching with those expressionless eyes. I know what it is, I know what it's thinking, and it won't do anything if I JUST PRESS THIS BUTTON! I CAN'T! I CAN'T STOP CRYING! OH GOD I HATE MYSELF!

I think that would undermine the basic idea. The concept of cosmic horror is based on the idea that, since the cosmos is not humanocentric, there are forms of life and reality utterly alien to the human experience. It would be plausible and interesting if ~some~ of them were actually helpful to humans, but having them ~all~ be benevolent makes even less sense than all of them being actively malevolent.

It certainly makes less sense for the cosmos to be humanocentirc, but in its own way it's even more horrifying if the cosmos is humanoicentric.

I do not remember the shape of the beast that had crept into my room through the angles of time and reality. I do not know its name, and I am sure that I indeed could not know its name without going entirely insane. I do not know for what length of time it spent in my company, or what it did in my presence, although my room seems to twitch in places at the corners of my eyes since its visit, and sometimes I swear I can hear a sound like a balloon being inflated.

I think once you codify eldritch abominations in human morality they become a lot less eldritch.

Most of the 'evil' and 'ambivalent' eldritch abominations aren't actually evil or ambivalent, just motivated in such a way that the consequences are horrific for normal universe bystanders.

The Weaver in Perdido Street Station is a bit like what you're getting at though.

Body horror is pretty common, and that eye thing has been done multiple times.

I mean, if it's making benevolent actions (those aren't really benevolent actions) then just make them a product of the alien mindset, like any malevolent actions typically would be.

The Weaver I mentioned is totally focused on an aesthetic beauty only it (and maybe some other multi-dimensional creatures) can perceive, so its actions are unpredictable. The actions it takes in the book are more benevolent than malevolent though, at least in terms of what happens to the protagonists.

Perhaps Justice, Truth, etc exist in tangible forms to these extra dimensional beings and they are cultivating a garden that we happen to be in (like ants or aphids or dirt).

But I would also posit, with my humble human knowledge, that you are taking this too seriously.

I would like to think so

>The trees bent as if in reverence to the presence before me
>The night was banished in a halo of light and the moon's glow was humbled
>The twinkle of the stars faded into the newly made twighlight
>I could not move in awe of the presence that held me as if my body was shackled to the ground and consequently accepted whatever fate would befall me
>I did not notice when the thing moved it's stubby legs swimming through the air propelling it's massive rotund body to me
>At first it sounded like a distant whisper that grew into a cocophony of numberless voices, and then it spoke as clear as day
>"Sometimes being nice to people actually pays off"

"He's been like that for years now."
I looked through the safety glass at the huddled form. This thing that had once been human was weeping and gently rocking back and forth. As I watched, the patient soiled himself.
After summoning orderlies to clean the patient, Director Phillips said, "He just wouldn't listen to the Outsiders. He kept on hurting himself and others so they kept on dropping by to advise him, and... Well. You know how... intense that can be.
I did.
I would never forget the thing that slid and shambled out from behind the convenience store, or the terrible smell-sound that it brought when it looked at me.
>You should return that pack of gum. That clerk has a family to feed.
It was unfair to call the patient mad; after all, no sane man would tempt multiple visits from such creatures.

Didn't Brian Lumley do something similar? I remember some of his stories had Kthanid and Yad-Thaddag, that where basically good (or at least benign) opposites of Cthulhu and Yog-Sothoth aligned with Nodens and the Elder Gods. Kthanid is literally described as identical to Cthulhu, but with "diamond-dusted" skin that "shone with the light of the stars" and "eyes of molten gold". It's also implied to be a member of the same race, if not even a relative.

When watering flowers one cold and sunny day, I noticed that I had drenched a bumblebee to the point where it couldn't fly and it was moving sluggishly and confusedly

I balanced it on my hand and held it up to the sun for perhaps 10 minutes, continuing to water, until it warmed back up, dried off, and flew away

Consider the experience from the bee's perspective, and I think there's one example of what eldritch benevolence could look like

I usually bike home from work the quickest route, but on a sunny day like that day, the scenic park route seemed like a welcome change. As I lazily make my way through the crowds, I spy something from the corner of my eye. Under a tree, there was what looked like a hole in the trunk the size of a person. For just the brief moment it was in my vision, I feel like something had knocked the wind out of me. All of a sudden, I feel so tired that simply moving the pedals feels like a gargantuan task. I pull over the bike and make my way to the nearest bench. As soon as I sit down, I can see it. The hole from the trunk is walking towards me. As it makes its way towards me, I feel as if I had never slept in my entire life. Extreme fatigue set in over me as the hole walked toward me, so much that I could not even open my mouth to scream. It seemingly slid over the ground, completely unmoving as it made its way towards me. Now that it was closer, I could see that it wasn't a hole.

It seemed human in shape, if only because I couldn't think of a better descriptor for its features. It had a mouth that reached to the sidewalk, and in its dark recesses I could see the glimmer of many teeth and saliva. Its matted hair, which seemed to be black on first sight, looked as if it absorbed all light shone. As I prayed to any and all deities that I hoped would listen, my mental pleas that at least they would make it quick and painless, it turned around. Its mass appeared to shrink for a moment. I realized it wasn't shrinking, but bending to sit down. For what seemed like an eternity, it lay on the other end of the bench, breathing heavily with a breath that smelled like copper and rot. It shifted its weight, and moved its mass towards me.

It made a sound like a dying animal crossed with the howl of winter wind. It took me a while to ignore my terror and piece together what I realized was a sentence...

It's raining as I walk home from the funeral. It's been a week of constant misfortune. A pet's death, a breakup with my girlfriend, now my brother's death. The downpour in the dark evening sums up the my mood exquisitely. Then, in the night, I can see something wrong. A single floating red dot. It starts to come closer, the dot is attached to a writhing mass of glossy black flesh. Only the head remains the same vague shape, something resembling an avian head. The rest of the body is changing, it might have tentacles at one point, the next moment, four legs, then wings, or it slithers on a snake like body.
I stand still as it approaches, my horror locking me in place. The sight of the creature is an offense to reality, I feel a pain in my head as a single drop of blood worms its way out of my eye. The thing reaches me, where it rears up so it stands eye to eye with me. It turns its head from side to side, gazing at me with no discernable expression. I try to scream, or cry or run but I am held motionless, unable to summon the strength to move. Two protrusions come from around the mass's back, one clutching a bouquet of flowers, the other a small box of chocolate.
Written on the box is "happy valentine's day"

>Come from distant stars to protect unprepared worlds from cosmic horrors, flumphs are jellyfish-like creatures that float in the air and hunt with acidic spikes growing from their undersides. Gentle at heart, flumphs understand that their appearance often terrifies viewers, and thus conceal themselves and observe neighboring settlements from afar, only revealing themselves when absolutely necessary. They also know full well the limitations of their fragile forms, and rather than directly opposing the horrors they seek to defeat, they prefer to recruit and advise heroes to tackle these dangerous tasks instead.

>On the ancient world where flumphs first originated, these misunderstood creatures served as heralds of their elder gods, deities so old and far off that humans have forgotten them. Naturally docile and protective creatures, they serve the greater good, aiding kind and sentient creatures in an eternal fight against horrors that should not be.

>Flumphs live out their lives ever vigilant of threats from beyond. When they catch wind of a potential incursion, either in their mystic dreams or by watching the stars for telltale signs, the creatures generally send an emissary to make contact with a civilized race, often lurking on the fringes of a community and observing the populace before picking the most accepting person to approach.

>Flumphs find great pleasure in making pacts and upholding them. Most conversations with flumphs end with small oaths or agreements. While such accords may seem to be nothing more than the outcome of polite conversation and social chitchat, flumphs take great pride in staying true to these arrangements, and expect the same of their conversational partner.

I was just coming home from a horrible argument with my family. It was raining so hard i could hear my heart thumping with every sharp turn i've made, when I felt it. a feeling of dread as if the very fabric for reality was coming asunder, i felt my self lost all consciousness, when i woke in home in bed with i saw it ; a being made from the very darkness it's self grasping tendrils coving it's form. when i finally spoke with a voice that shook the foundations of the very universe "I saw you were in trouble.. so i saved you.. you should go back to your family they worried so much..so much love…I guess i'll take my leave kind sir." I watched as the rain cleared up and it was as if every negative emotion in my whole body was gone. I raced back to my family I failed to notice the dark ball of energy following me.

You collapse into the mud. Your body has finally given out after hours of running with no rest, unable to push itself any longer. Your breath comes in ragged gasps, filling your burning lungs. For all of your determination and terror, you just can’t go another step. You can hear them calling out to one another and the branches snapping as they close in as you futilely try to drag yourself through the dirt and leaves, but you know that this is the moment their hunt ends.
You look up and can see the things circling around you. Their spidery limbs twitch and jerk as they haul their impossibly gaunt bodies through the underbrush. This is it, you think. This is how it ends. One of them reaches you and snakes out a single tendril, lifting you by one ankle like you were a feather. On the way up its enormous frame, you see your image reflected a hundred times in its dozens of eyes, but your features are distorted and feral. Death would be preferable to what comes next.
Still upside down, you are brought face to “face” with the atrocity. You try to shut your eyes, as merely gazing upon the thing in all of its horrible majesty brings visions of mouths and blood. Its featureless head cracks open, and you can see a star-speckled void stretching forever, rimmed with teeth beyond count. You pray it will be over quickly. A faint, ragged, sucking of air precedes its screech.
“WE NOTICED YOUR CAR HAD A FLAT TIRE BACK THERE.”
You peek one eye open.
“NEED A HAND WITH THAT?”
You twist your body slightly, and see that the other two are holding a jack and a spare tire. It would fit your car perfectly.
“...s-sure?” you barely manage to eek out.

You drive off, still watching behind you warily. You put down the note with written directions to the nearest gas station and turn the rear view mirror away. You thought you saw them waving at you.

OP here. I'm surprised this thread is still here. Thanks for keeping this thread alive. I'm proud of you /tg/.

>My wife stares at me a bit before heading out to work.
>I ask her what's up but she tells me it's nothing and steps out.
>Thinking nothing of it I take advantage of the my rare day off to catch up on some shows.
>As I'm sitting there watch I get the strange sensation of falling forward endlessly.
>My vision blurs and sound becomes muffled.
>My tv's screen goes black and starts spewing endless globs of thick inky liquid.
>A fat meat red hand erupts from the black depths and slams down on the ground.
>This is followed by another and another and another! It's too many to count.
>I remain bolted where I sat, unable to move away from the coming horror.
>It pulled itself out of the tv ink. Morbidly obese with a vertical mouth that stretched from the middle of a eyeless face to bloated gut.
>I opened my mouth to scream but the creature rushed me and pinned me to the wall.
>Then it spoke with the voice of a thousand dying rodents, "Don't forget! It's you and your wife's anniversary! Surprise her with a home cook meal."
>And just like that everything returned to normal except for a note shoved into my hand.
>Written on ancient parchment and penned in the blood of a thousand beasts the very note itself was a grocery list I could use to make dinner.
>Rather complete but I don't think I can get the heart of a Xchangal.

Oh, man. I'm gonna fucking use this in my Dark Heresy campaign.

Think about it. Team is in the slums on some hive world. A deadly plague is wreaking havoc in the lower levels population. Nobody above cares as usual.
But rumors are spreading about a cure. Someone has taken residence in an old hospice and gives care to anyone who needs it for free.
Team locates the hospice and enters. It's filled with the diseased and downtrodden. They wait in silence. Men and women in pale blue robes hand out carpets, food and drink. Every five minutes, patients are led through a door. Nobody seem to return.
Assassin wraps his cameleonine cloak around him and takes a trip in the ventilation-system.
Crawling through a labyrinth he finally reaches a room. Watching through the vent, he sees a white, but dark room. A patient is laying on a slab. Three robed figures stands around him, praying in a laguage which give you discomfort. A tall fourth figure appears. It pulls back it's cowl. It's face...vaguely human, but his face carries a great beak and long dark blue feathers.
The patient is stripped naked, and the creature draws his hand across every boil and sore. The flesh warps and and in place of plague, the skin now takes colours and in some spots patches of soft down or an eyeball.
The patient rises on his own...he is given a new set of clothes and one of the robed figures escorts him out.
The birdlike creature waves his arm slowly, and a new patient is guided into the room...

Knowing my players being a bit radical and "goody-two-shoes" at times. This will give them quite the dilemma.
Let minor mutation take place in exchange for a painful death and risk of spreading plauge further? Or stop this heresy now, taking away the only chance of survival and further risking riots and other consequences.

Oh, I'm so looking forward to next friday. :3

>A strange corpse washed ashore after some flooding.
>The locals claimed it was mythical creature which inhabits the woods and is responisble for the disappearances of numerous hikers.
>I decided to investigate such claims and debunk them as mere local superstition.
>I soon received a letter from one Mr. Henry Wentworth Akeley, urging me to abandon my research. We begin a correspondence, and he told me numerous fantastical stories.
>He claimed he would send me proof, but when it never arrived he suddenly changed his tone and urged me to come visit. Claiming he had been contacted by the beings, that they were indeed quite friendly, and they wished to discuss several things with me personally.
>With some reluctance, I set out immediately. When I arrived Mr. Akeley was in a pitiful condition. He claimed he had recently fallen ill, immobilized in a wheel chair, and so covered I could scarcely see his features.
>When we finally sat down to talk, Akeley told me that the creatures were actually beings from another planet and assured me they ment us no harm, and that everything had been a massive misunderstanding.
>I asked him what it was they had wished to discuss with me personally.
>At that point, from behind a curtain emerged two large, fungoid, crustacean-like entities. Their heads were a mass of grotesque fleshy feelers and eye stalks. Perhaps most disturbing of all, they wore ill fitting white dress shirts and black ties.
>They spoke in a vile burbling attempt at human speech. What they said would forever be burned into my memory.

Dilemma? It's a fucking chaos cult. Sure, stage one of their plan doesn't seem that bad. But you have to know that the endgame they're working towards makes the plague look like a christmas party.

For all you know, they released the plague so they could cure it.

Here, upon the pages of this journal, I will record my now fleeing memories of the event, that fateful meeting, which will change my perception of reality forever.
I was on my way home from the library in town when I crossed through a small, forrested path. As I looked around me into the darkness, I suddenly felt a sharp stinging sensation between my temple, before my consciousness caught up with the thing my eyes had perceived: a mass of round stamps appeared in the snow in front of me, growing in number every moment, until something took shape in the air above them.
I wanted to turn, to run, or to at least close my eyes rather than see this...thing, this abomination of nature, and even remembering it now provokes a terrible headache. With its hundreds of thin arms outstrechted, it scattered at me on countless legs, staring, as it seemed, straight into my soul with horizontally slotted eyes protruding between the thin appendages.
As it stood before me, a noise of a million teeth shattering against each other arose, before that same clatter shaped something akin to words:
"IT'S VERY COLD OUTSIDE, YOU COULD GET SICK! HERE, TAKE MY GLOVES AND MY HAT". The monster stretched out two of its arms. One of them let what seemed to be a pair of arm long, organic tubes fall into my hands. The other set a cap upon my head, solid in shape, yet soft on the inside.
Breathing a thanking response, I ran as fast as my body, fuelled by adrenaline and fear, would take me. From behind me the creature called out, "AND DON'T OVEREXERT YOURSELF!".

Thoughts? Critique? This is my first piece of writefaggotry I've done here, how'd I do?

I mean, sure, hoodies, the color white, strawberry jam and any musical note on the minor scale give me terror headaches that leave me weeping opening in the fetal position, but my new personal assistant is just so darn chipper and good at managing my schedule that I just can't see myself replacing her.

Seriously.

Every time I think too hard about my new personal assistant, I no longer cast any reflections. Other than that, life is good!

Fluffing this concept out a little more, I'm envisioning the beings existing partially in several realities at once.

The entities can manifest certain power in their own reality by effecting ours.

This makes them sometimes unpredictable but most of the time the singular entity pursues a similar power.

For example, satisfaction and physical pain might combine for a typical alien desk job 9-5.

This mean that it will help someone as it makes them howl and boils away their flesh.

Another way I'm entertaining is positive actions transforming into physical objects in their realm, them being the carpenters and architects who have no sense of the consequence of what they do in our realm.
>>
So where do all these strange, well-intentioned beings come from? Perhaps they're refugees from other worlds trying to adapt to local customs? Or minions of a benevolent God meant for worlds beyond Earth, trying to do their duty in a place they were never meant to inhabit.
>>
>>28711449
but... Yog-sothoth has never actually been depicted as malevolent? At least in the original mythos stuff. Like, some cultists do some weird shit but Yoggy doesn't really have an active hand in any of that.
>>
>>28754641

In the Dunwhich Horror the beings trying to push along the plan to "take the world out of the solar system" are the Old one or the Great old ones (I think they are the same thing). However to do it they needed Yog-Sothoth's powers which involved getting his essence hence the incestuous birth of Wilbur and the Horror
>>
>>28754641

Yog-Sothoth isn't a person per se, it's space and time.
>>
>>28757300

The Great Race, the Elder Things and the Outer Gods are all separate "races". Not sure there are any "Old Gods" in Lovecraft, they're all as old as the cosmos. Maybe the Gods of the Dreamlands, who are based on human myths?
>>
>>28711449
you're thinking of august derleth's awful shit writing
>>
>>28757373
It's a bit nebulous and some later writers made kind of a clusterfuck but from what i remember they are organized thusly:

-Outer/Other Gods: Azathot, Yog-Sothoth, Nyarlatothep, Shub-Niggurath and a couple of others; they embody cosmic principles and pretty much rule the universe.

-Elder Gods: a mysterious pantheon of deities, enemies or at least rival to the Outer gods and apparently much more benevolent toward humanity. The most famous are Nodens and Hypnos.

-Great Old Ones: Lesser deities, like Cthulhu, Yig or Ithaqua, often servants of the Outer or Elder gods. They're incomprehesibly powerful by human standards but still small fries compared to the big guys. They tend to have more worship than the outer gods since they're much more involved in human affairs.

-Great Ones: the myriad of human-like gods of the Dreamlands. They're barely above superhero level but they're under the protection of the Outer gods so you better show some respect. They think humans are pretty cool.

-Avatars: Independent manifestations of a god, like the 999 Masks of Nyarlathotep.

Then there are the various mythos races, divided into Independent Races (ghouls, Old Ones, the Great Race) and Servitor Races (Deep Ones, Snakemen). Dunno about these "Old Gods".
>>
>>28754132
They need humanity ti become a benevolent Gestalt deity since they won't survive once their betters make the cosmos go boom.
>>
>>28757518
No, he's thinking of Lumley, they're in the Titus Crow stories. (which, as much as I'm not a fan of term, I'd be hard pressed not to dub Mary Sue fiction)

>>28758072
Those divisions are mostly given in the CoC RPG from Chaosium. Other sources are often more fluid.

Even with those categories, there's some flexibility: Hastur has occasionally been placed as an Outer God, rather than as a GOO as usual.
What exactly is the difference between Bast and Yig in the mythos?

Why not someone who turned into a chaos monster but kept their sanity (more or less)? So they sort of just want to have someone to be friends with?
>>
>>28758308
Bast is an Elder God but her cult is pratically dead outside the Dreamlands, but she is always described in positive terms (Lovecraft really loved cats); Yig is a Great Old One (so in theory less powerful) but still has his snakemen and snakehandlers cults across America. Both of them are very similar though: aloof, reserved gods that will leave you alone if you don't mess with their worshippers/favourite animal but will personally come for your ass if you do.
