So, after some discussion, we may see some more threads in '45. Could go out to the end of December, though I honestly don't think it will. In related news, work on next run of '89 progresses well, do you guys think i should call it SW'90 and do that through the seasons, or just keep calling it '89?

anyway, archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

down along the bottom of the page. They're folded in with all the other '89 and spin offs, plus there's the tag to get to the OG SWQ in there too.

++

You yawn, careful to not stretch too much- your back and left shoulder are always stiff and sore in the morning. You'd curse the kraut that put a few rounds into you over Chamery back in 1918, except you're afraid it'd disturb Ilyena.

You still wonder at that. This whole war, at least since Quentin called you to Europe, what, six, eight months ago, has been very strange. The most normal part about it, you think with a light chuckle, is the bomber escort- and even then, the mission packages these days are wildly mixed. Yesterday's morning mission, you flew with a mixed bag of Fw-190s and the newer P-51s, and the afternoon strike was similarly mixed, with Me-109s and -110s in among your Lightnings and Mustangs. Even a few of the newer Me-262s have been riding along, though, privately, you and the other American pilots have taken to calling them blow jobs- they're fast, but can't turn for shit, and the squiddies are learning how vulnerable they are on their landing approach- enough that the Luftwaffe's AA corps has begun setting up flak lanes on their airbases to cover them.

1/2
>>
Everybody says the war in Europe is winding down- the squiddies are beaten and withdrawing to their last few 'hives' in Poland and the westernmost parts of Russia. Rumors have even started floating down from above about pending transfers to the pacific theater, where combat still rages among the islands. A few of the bomber groups have even supposedly been issued mosquito netting and malaria drugs already, though you haven't seen anything.

You sit up, propping yourself up on your right arm and rotating your left shoulder with a grimace, trying to work the stiffness out. There's still some lead in there, a few small bits the docs couldn't get out, that you feel occasionally. Not this morning, thankfully.

2/3 (oops)
>>
You take a second to look down at your- well, you guess she's your girlfriend, though the term seems out of place, considering both of your ages. You can't help but reach down and brush a stray strand of blonde hair out of her face- smilingly lightly at it. It's kind of strange, kind of scary, and a whole lot of wonderful- you know what the songs are talking about when they try to describe love, now, you guess. You're not a poet, though, so you don't really have the words for it.

Quentin's already asked about the wedding- you haven't proposed, yet. You're planning to, of course, but not yet. You don't even have a ring, though you could get one in Berlin pretty easily. The twins think the whole thing is cute and disturbing in equal measure, and Camille seems to have taken it in stride. Privately, she's admitted to being in on Quentin's betting pool- and making a packet off of it, having been one of three people closest to guessing the right date when you two made it official. You'd laughed at that, having by then realized that it wasn't an issue as much as you were initially afraid it was going to be.

You've only got a brief, split-second of warning before slim fingers wrap themselves tightly around your arm and yank you back down, your head hitting the pillow with a weak pomf.

Ilyena, still half asleep, kisses you lightly, then lays her head on your chest, mumbling “Five more minutes?”

[] You can't- you've got to cook breakfast and get down to ops

[x] Five more minutes won't hurt a thing.

In a display of the whole 'old people acting cute' thing that disturbs the twins so badly, you just wrap your arm around her in response. Five minutes won't make the world burn down, you figure, and in your case the flight plan is the same as it's always been- out front, leading the sweep. Part of it is that no one, least of all you, now, wants to see the witches caught in their motherships if the bombers do get hit- which is rare, the martians seem to lack the general discipline to go after the bombers when your fighters are there, but the 8th has taken losses. You admire the courage of the bomber jocks- you don't think you could sit up there, just counting on luck to keep you safe from the spiral rockets and whatever else they throw at you.

Part of that is why you want to get down to ops before the mission today- rumors have it that there's a new weapon appearing, a flak rocket of sorts, that caused havoc against a soviet mission earlier in the week. While you've not seen anything of the like, you're worried about the implications, especially in the pacific, where the squiddies still have fight left in them. You have noticed that their fighters, the pricks, firebees, and steamsleds, are getting both more sparse and are piloted worse- something for which, you think, looking down at look at Ilyena's head, resting on your chest, you're eternally grateful.

Your train of thought is interrupted when she tilts her head to look up at you, her impish smile playing around her lips. “So, John.” She says, quietly. “Do you have plans for the next five minutes?”

You're pretty sure you don't.

1/2
>>
Half an hour later, showered, shaved, and dressed, you head downstairs. You're still up before the twins, though that's not unusual, and Camille isn't downstairs yet, though you heard her shower turn on when you got done with yours. You're just glad the hot water heater in this place is excellent- some places, including your old quarters, back at Wattisham, the girls would be fighting over who got the hot water.

You manage to cook up some leftovers- not much, rationing here in Berlin is notably worse than it was in Britain, cut off as they were from most of the rest of the western allies by occupied France. With the French ports and railways open again, the torrent of supplies originating back in the US has begun to stream in. Still, it will take time to get caught up, and until then, you'll make due. In this case, you simply fry up some potatoes and slice in some sausage you managed to scare up on your last trip into Berlin, wishing you had some citrus fruit for juice.

Even the coffee is scarce, and you've made the switch to tea, again. You and Quint had both become accustomed to English tea in the first war, and it's an easy switch for you to go back to it. For some reason, supplies of that are far more plentiful- you'd ask why, but figure it's not that important anyway. You, rather gallantly, you think, save the coffee for Ilyena and Camille, both of whom join you downstairs presently.

You're in the process of setting the bowl with breakfast on the table when the twins join you- sounds like a herd of elephants coming down the stairs. April would have been first into her seat, if not for May pushing her hard enough to make her overshoot and run into you.

“Sorry major. Hey! Where are we going today?” She asks, bouncing away almost like a damn superball.

[x] We've got a tactical sweep with some Luftwaffe tank killers near Poznan today.

“Tactical sweep with some Luftwaffe tank killers near Poznan.” You say, indicating she needs to get the plate of toast. “The Seventh Panzer and US first armored are going in with the brits right behind them. Rommel thinks they can clear a corridor straight to warsaw in under a week.”

Ilyena shakes her head. “He is probably boasting for propaganda. This is their last major hold in Europe.”

“Don't forget Russia, mum.” Camille says, quietly. “There's still big hives around Minsk and Prypiat too.”

“It would be foolish for us to help the Bolsheviks.” Ilyena says, bluntly. “They are animals, and will act like animals. The more they are hurt in this war, the better.”

You look back and shake your head slightly at Camille, before she responds. She catches it, and her reply dies on her lips.

You pass the rest of breakfast in silence- you and the twins silently envying the glasses of milk sitting front of Ilyena and Camille. For some reason, it's come down that all european milk is off limits, and the powdered stuff you get is godawful. Typically, you and the twins make due with juice when you can get it, or water or tea when you can't.

“We'll clean up in here, John.” Ilyena says, as you start to get up. “You can take care of your pre-mission tasks, we'll be along shortly.”

[x] Go hit up ops for the latest weather and local intel

You snag your flight bag on the way out the door, noting that, while the day is a bit cold, and you're too sure about the look of those clouds rolling in from the west, the morning is fairly clear, with some scattered high altitude stuff, but nothing really worrisome. You don't exactly relish the idea of trying to fly through thunderheads- you did that once or twice back in the '20s over the midwest, and nearly died for it.

The ops building is jointly manned- the Luftwaffe has a fighter training school here, their war-weary Me-109s and Fw-190s lining the ramp on the other side of the base from your pair of bats. More than once, you've been allowed priority on the runway over them- you like to think it's because they're in awe of you, but realize it's more a case of importance. More specifically, an armed fighter on a mission is a lot more important than getting nuggets up for their training flights five minutes sooner.

>>
The weather report is just what you expected- there's going to be a major storm on the way in a few hours after you're scheduled to be back on the ground, and it's closing most of the major airbases in the region. You almost feel bad for the grunts and the tankers, but then again, masers tend to fare poorly in storms, so they might use it as a cover for a push.

As far as intel goes, there's plenty. Your mission isn't a sweep in the traditional sense so much as it is riding top cover for a unit of Luftwaffe tank killers, acting as close support for the seventh on their drive east. The aliums- already battered by the ongoing offensives aimed at crippling their European operations, are fighting a defensive action that's led Rommel, in general command of the operation, to revive aspects of the blitzkreig. While the Ju88 has been largely replaced by cannon armed Fw190s and P-47s with rockets, the theory is the same.

The threat assessment in the area is light- and going off your own memory of the missions yesterday, there weren't that many fighters sent up to oppose you. Your biggest concern is masers- you'll be inside their effective range from the ground, and they do have self-propelled AA guns now, even if they're not that common.

2/3 (oops)
>>
The ground threat is mixed and sketchy though- beetle tanks, for sure, maybe even a tripod or two, though the iconic martian tripods are all but gone- victims of the reality of warfare. There's unconfirmed rumors the martians still have a few of their flying dreads at warsaw, though reports seem to indicate that the soviet union captured a major depot with several dozen earlier in the week, and their numbers have been cut to nearly zero- reinforcements from the red planet haven't been coming for a long, long time, and a lot of the eggheads paid to know about that kind of thing are saying they're seeing signs of a massive civil war on the red planet.

You turn back in the intel packet- they don't make many copies, and you don't get your own- and head down to the hangar, where your fighter awaits. Inside, Quentin and Scotty are talking, sharing some of their precious coffee with an older looking man with a tremendous smile and round glasses.

[x] Mr. Roosevelt, sir! Haven't seen you in a while, how are you?

“Mr. Roosevelt, sir!” you call, walking over to join them. “Haven't seen you in a while, how are you?”

“Very fine, lieut- wait, it's major, now, isn't it?” He laughs, still a powerful sound, while shaking your hand. “I missed the chance to see you boys in action during the last war, and said by thunder I won't miss my chance this time!”

“Not much to see, really.” You say, with a shrug. “We go out, we do our thing, we come back. I guess there's gun camera footage...”

He laughs again. “I suppose I could have made you worry by saying I intended to fly with you, but my instruction, so far, isn't quite up to snuff.” He leans forward and winks. “Now, those tanks, those I think I could do quite well with, sir. Quite well.”

The image of the old man- he's got to be pushing 90, now- riding in the commander's hatch of a Panther or even one of the new tiger IIs- makes you laugh. You can practically see him saying “Hans, fetch me my martian gun.”

Practically.

“I'm flying this one with you, John.” Quentin announces in the short silence. “I've got the second bat loaded with rockets, just in case.”

“Quentin, ya know, maybe this isn't such a good idea-” you say, starting to express your doubt, when he continues.

“Oh, and dad wants to meet Ilyena.”

“He- what?” You ask, off-put by the statement.

“Indeed I do, major!” The elder Roosevelt says, turning now to face you. “Quentin tells me you've found yourself a ladyfriend! Very good! I intend to spend some time finding you a suitable wedding gift!”

“That's not really necess-” You protest, before being cut off by his laugh again.

1/3
>>
“Nonsense! It's entirely necessary!” He says. “I'd love to give you one of my hunting rifles, but I donated most of them to museums recently.” He shrugs. “I'm sure there will be something in the city that will fit. I intend to go in presently, though I thought I should wait to see you two off.”

He grins. “Afterall, it is a wedding gift, no sense in spoiling the surprise!”

You cast one baleful glare at Quentin- who meets it with his best shit-eating grin.

“Hello Quentin, Scotty.” Ilyena says, walking up from behind you and slipping her hand in yours. You didn't even hear her coming- not unusual, given the slippers the girls all seem to prefer. Easier to get in and out of, you think.

“Mornin, ma'am.” Scotty greets, handing her the clip board with the striker's maintenance forms on them. “We worked out that fault with your portside unit, looks like it was just a worn down bearing. No problem, probably had a few hours left in it. We did a full maintenance overhaul on both units overnight, then went through the rest of your kit, everything looks good. The twins are too rough on those Mustangs of theirs though, you might want to talk to them about that, that's the third powerpack we've had to replace in as many weeks.”

Ilyena nods, distracted. “And Camille?”

Scotty shakes his head. “Why she won't ditch those old hurricanes is anyone's guess, but they work fine, for as old as they are. We'd all feel better if she'd swap to tempests or spits though.”

Ilyena nods again.

2/3
>>
“I'm sorry to be rude.” She says, handing the board back off to Scotty. “I do not believe we've been introduced?”

Quentin takes the lead, seconds before you can. “Colonel, this is my dad, Theodore Roosevelt. Dad, this is Colonel Ilyena Nicolevena, on detached duty with us from the soviet witch corps.”

Her eyes narrow slightly at that- you're not sure anyone notices but yourself.

“Honored to meet you, miss Nicolevena.” Theodore says, kissing the back of her hand. “Quentin has told me as much as I suspect he can about your exploits over France, but I'd be delighted to hear about them first-hand, should you ever have the time.”

She smiles. “Only if you promise to share stories about mediating between the Imperials and Japanese at Portsmouth. I have heard you once offered to take both delegations on safari?”

3/4 (oops)
>>
Teddy laughs. “That I did! They declined, I'm afraid, but it was their loss. Nevertheless,” he continues, looking at his wristwatch, “I imagine you fine young people have a war to win. I'll be here when you get back. And John, miss Nicolevena, congratulations. I look forward to the wedding.” He grins.

“We look forward to seeing you there.” Ilyena responds, before you can say anything, looking sideways up at you.

Teddy laughs, clearing the hangar with his minder- some secret service type, you think, who probably doesn't get paid near enough. Ilyena sneaks a quick peck on the cheek in, then she heads off to her strikers, preparing her own preflight.

“Well, sir, we've got some weapons laid out.” Scotty says, once she's left. “There's some cannon pods- German made stuff, thirties. Good for busting tanks, and they won't mess up your handling or speed too much, but they don't have much ammo. We can load some rockets up, no problem, or give you some bombs, I think we can get some two-fifties on the wings. We've even got some of those pressed paper fuel tanks, we could load those up, give you some more loiter time if you wanted it.”

[x] Cannons

You contemplate loading the fuel tanks up- the extra wouldn't hurt, especially if you find yourself in an extended dogfight- but the cannon pods just call to you. The German 30mm tank busting cannons supposedly have a much better ballistic profile than the 37mm cannon the bat was initially armed with, and they won't affect your performance much at all- you've got power to spare, afterall.

Scotty takes the clipboard back from you after you sign off on the maintenance forms, nudging you to step off the taxi path as the twins go coasting by, their strikers giving them a ground-effect. You've always wondered why they don't just take off straight up and down- they certainly could, you think. You make a mental note to ask.

You climb up into the bat as a aircraft tug hooks up to it, pulling you outside before you start up the monster wrights- they create so much air disturbance in the hangar that you really can't start them in there. They chortle and whine and cough and snort their way to life before finally hitting their stride, their chained thunder only barely muted when you close your retrofit Malcolm hood canopy and latch it down. You wish you had a bubble canopy like the Mustangs, though you think that's something for the next batch of bats. If there ever is a next batch.

You and Quentin roar down the runway like old times, peeling right after takeoff and linking up with the orbiting witches. Your Strike package charges, a wing of Fw-190s loaded with gondola cannon and bombs, loiter nearby, and you take the lead.

You're briefed strict radio silence, of course, but that doesn't tend to keep. You get the feeling you're headed into a hellstorm when you can see the smoke a hundred miles out- dozens of columns, more than you can count, crawling skyward. You rock your wings, and Quint looks back.

“Bandits?” You sign to him, using the handsignals you both remember so well. He shakes his head, flashing back “Tanks. Breakthrough”

the -190s bank, diving on seperate targets as you enter the airspace. Human forces have the martians on the back leg, panthers hammering apart fixed positions and martian beetle tanks alike. The Panzergrenadiers, some of the best mechanized infantry in the world, in close support, their half-tracks rolling along, the dust from their advance clear even from up here.

A little ground fire wings it's way toward you, and in the distance, you make out the faint, distinct specks of inbound fighters.

Quentin points to them, indicating you should go after them first. You can't make out how many it is, but you'll certainly be badly outnumbered- then again, the witches will probably follow you in- a trick you've worked out over the last couple months.

[x] Agree, we'll get those fighters.

You nod, throttling up and following Quentin into a gentle climb, to put you about on the level with the incoming fighters. Looks like a good two or three dozen, but that doesn't concern you too much- factoring in the witches, it's about an even fight, maybe skewed a bit in your favor.

You line up, looking around, and nodding when Ilyena knocks on your canopy glass. She pushes forward just a hair, above your canopy by just enough that her striker propellers clear the back of your cockpit. Her shield flashes to life in front of you as you close, absorbing the fire sent your way.

You return the favor, the thunder of your combined weapons shaking the sky and annihilating one prick in an instant, the quad 20mm cannons backed by the half dozen .50 machine guns overwhelming the smaller fighter's meager protection and obliterating it's power core in a storm of lead and fragmentation shells. The rest of the little fighters make defensive turns to get out of your line of fire- Quentin and Camille replicating the move perfectly, plowing a route through the martian fighters and breaking up their formation with almost no effort. The witches break off, engaging their own targets, Ilyena's mosin-nagant barking once and swatting another fighter with one well-aimed shot.

You dive on a pair that broke low like a hawk on a pair of pigeons- the leader doesn't stand a chance as your cannon slam into his fighter from the top, and you watch it fall, almost vertically, to cartwheel along the ground, leaving a fireball and trail of debris. His wingman, seeing his leader's demise, breaks into your attack and away, clawing for distance- you're coming around when Camille's SMLE knocks him out of the sky.

1/3
>>
You flip onto your back, rolling around for another sweeping pass, when you're forced to interrupt yourself to engage a prick tailing one of the twins- damn girl isn't paying attention, focused on two others she's chasing. You can't tell which it is, but she's intent, spraying .45 lead from her Thompson at them. You break hard right, closing on the fighter and forcing him to break off with your first burst- though he won't get away that easily.

Your second sends him spiraling down, whatever martian controls he had shot all to hell by the throw weight of your cannons. You look back over your shoulder to watch the twin- her tail now cleared of martians- get the two she was chasing.

Three so far, you think, noting that they're bugging out. The witches have accounted for a good twenty, and Quint's gotten four- with most of their numbers gone in less than five minutes, the survivors are fleeing, leaving their ground forces open to predatation by the marauding close air support planes- now including some Jugs from a nearby sortie and some Mustangs from the morning raid, expending some ammunition shooting up softer targets.

You get in a few licks as well, strafing a strong point and making repeated passes at a bunker complex- Finally, one of the Germans nails it with a 250lb bomb, and the tanks roll past it's wreckage and into the open, their crews gunning down the fleeing aliens- a full breakthrough. The way to Warsaw lays open in front of them.

Your ground attack flight, it's ammunition exhausted, turns for home, and Ilyena indicates to follow them, noting that your own ammunition is critically low- you're out of 20mm ammo, and your .50s have less than a hundred rounds between them.

2/3
>>
Landing at Templehof airport, You park your bird in it's hangar stall, noting that the wind is really picking up- there is one mother of a summer storm rolling in. You wait for Quentin to deplane, standing by the nosewheel of 'his' bat as he slides the canopy back and stands up, pulling off his helmet. He tosses his flight bag down at you and grins. “Just like old times, eh John?” he asks. “Did you see that breakthrough?”

You nod.

“We'll be home by christmas, mark my words.”

You scowl. “How many times have we heard that before?” You ask, handing him his bag as he climbs down.

He laughs again. “Ah, don't be like that, John.”

He leans in, conspiratorially. “So, have you picked out a ring?”

I wonder if that German clockmaker in the original SWQ has a brother...
>>
>>28650237
Isn't that what a jeweler is?

But yes, I do think that perhaps it would be advisable to put a stone on a wing ring (heh) and propose to her with that. It's like saying that you don't need to fly, you've found something better.

So...

Why not both?
>>
>>28650184
>[] “I had one of Scotty's boys make one out of my first set of wings.”
AND THEN WE TAKE IT TO A JEWELER IN BERLIN TO GET BLINGED UP

Okay, so. BRILLIANT IDEA, or possibly the sleep deprivation.

Jeweler is totally a gnome, because fuck why not. Not only is the ring made of his first wings. But we also get a witch foci incorporated into it. Just fucking because.
>>
>>28650357
So, money=romance, right? Fuck, we can get rocks for the ring after it is cast. But, they don't just hand out pilots wings.

[x] Write in option because yes.

You grin right back. “Something better, I think.”

He looks at you, quizzically.

You look over at Scotty. “Hey, Scotty! Did you guys get that thing I asked for done?”

He grins and nods. “Yessir, we sure did. I had Jackson do most of it, he comes from a family of jewelers, would ya believe?”

Quentin follows along as the Scotty leads, still talking. “We didn't have much trouble with the wings themselves, I guess they really did make them out of silver, back then. Pretty easy to heat them up and shrink them down.” He says, looking around before opening a door in the back of the hangar towards the machine shop.

“We clipped the ends of the wings themselves off and rounded it out,” He says, still talking. Inside the machine shop, a tech sargent is waiting with most of the ground crew that isn't out in the hangar. “The problem was the focus- we just couldn't lay hands on one that small with any kind of strength to it. We had to talk to pilot-officer Knight, she helped us out.”

Quentin doesn't say anything, and neither do you as one of the ground crew hands Scotty a plain black box.

“So we took the money you gave us, sir,” He says, opening it to show you it's contents “Pitched in a few extra here and there, and got an uncut diamond, then found a guy in the city to cut it to Cam- I mean, pilot-officer Knight's specifications. She did the rest of the work.”

Inside the box rests a silver ring- made out of your first wings. Set into the center of the shield is a small diamond- one that seems to glow with it's own inner light.

“She said the effect would wear off over time, If it wasn't used.” Scotty says, handing the box to you. “We used some of the leftover material from where we had to shorten the wings for the setting, then we polished the unholy living hell out of it.”

1/2 (I think)
>>
“Wow- this is amazing. You guys did a hell of a good job.” You say, wishing you could figure out a better way to say it- then you do. “Beers are on me for a while.”

You'd swear you just told them the war was over and they were going home, judging by the cheering. You invite them to come along- might as well have a crowd to pressure you into not chickening out. Besides, they kinda deserve it, after pulling this off.

“So, you think she'll like it?” You ask Quentin, the ring stuffed safely in your pocket as you walk across the tarmac towards your building, the rising wind blowing in from the west carrying the scent of rain.

He laughs. “Ya know, I must have asked myself that a dozen times when I was getting ready to propose. John, look. If you two are anywhere near as serious as you act, you could give her a ring made of twine, she'd still love it. That,” He motions to your pocket, “is, quite possibly, a one of a kind feat of craftsmanship. I bet she's going to cry.”

You open the door and step in, followed by the crowd. April, at the bottom of the stairs, grins and points to the sitting room- the one room with a radio and chairs, and the favorite spot in the building to dump your equipment and sit between missions or while gathering the energy to go get cleaned up and make dinner. Yours is a strange life, you think.

Somehow, you note, Quentin's dad has managed to join you, drawn, no doubt, by the crowd. Now you really can't back out.

“John, what is-” Ilyena starts, looking at the sudden crowd of people, then stops when you take a knee in front of her, pulling out the box.

“Ilyena Nicolevena, will you-” you don't get to finish in the face of her crushing hug.

Between her repeated sobs of 'yes', you're pretty sure you hear Theodore say “I think she agreed, fellows.” His is a dry wit, sometimes.

And that's it for tonight!

Sorry about the glacially slow update pace- I don't even really have a good excuse, I was just being slow. I'd like to say I was playing tanks and at least being productive in a game, but... nope. I'm not good enough to be productive in that game anyway, haha!

We'll probably stick with John and Ilyena for another thread or two, then we'll see what Frank's up to. I'm reserving a week somewhere in there for an actual break, by the way, but I'm not sure if things will work out quite how I want them to. We'll play that one by ear, keep an eye on the twitter, I guess.

The ring suggestion was pretty good, I hadn't thought of that.

Wonder if that's in the sealed chest...?

Anyway, cheers guys, hope you had fun, and I'll be in IRC if you need me.

till next week, gents!

Good thread, Goast. I'm really hoping we can get Ice that box of her grandpappy's, and her grandmother's ring is in it.

If the foci has lost its use because of those fucking matrons, Fronk should be pissed enough to napalm their houses.

Dont you see anon.

This means the ring is till in use in '89.

And that its probably with Ice and she uses it from time to time.
>>
>>28651152

I prolly should have been much more specific. She means the glow, not the use. Unless it gets burnt out, it's good forever.
