A tail? Cat? Someone's been following you?

Your eyes narrow at this, and it's here that the dots connect themselves.

"NECO." You growl this while turning back to glare at the road from the rear window. The otherwise deserted highway sporting only a few other fellow motorists - a couple of folks on motorcycles, and an old Volkswagen Beetle chugging along.

Ngh. You shouldn't have listened to Kyoko earlier. You should've just snuck the Golden Desert Eagle into your inventory and be done with it. Sure, you could probably gamble with your Shield, see what it'd bring you - but without the familiar weight of the shoulder holster against your side, you feel naked, more than ever.

An advanced...naked. Or something.

You don't feel all that comfortable without the Golden Desert Eagle in easy reach, is what you're getting at.
>>
>>28595050

"Eh? NECO?" Kyoko blinks, before chuckling. "Oh, that crazy girl from that internet computer thing! Ah, no, it's just a game a play whenever I'm drivin', I pretend I'm getting tailed by whoever I keep seeing on the rear view mirror. Never really actually gets to be a tail, though, unless I'm onna assignment."

It's here that she turns towards you briefly, before bursting out laughing again. "Holy shit, Murderface! Look at you! It's like you're gonna have diarrhea anytime soon!" She slaps the side of her steering wheel. "I'm drivin' you to a date, not your execution! Jeez, just turn it down a coupla notches!"

...Gnh. Well. It's not like you want to be like this all the time, just--

"I know, I know. It helped more than it didn't. But come on, nothing's gonna happen! You and Midori-chan's just gonna have dinner and that's it! Seriously, what could go wrong?"

. . .Oh, Kyoko. You poor, naive redhead.

Fine. Alright. Where's she taking you, then?

"Mami-chan's holiday cottage!" Kyoko grins. "Apparently Mami let Midori-chan borrow it for the night just for this occassion. It's not really that far from the city, though, just a bit of a drive near the countryside. It's near a small lake and everything - o-oh, and it's got an ENTIRE bear fur rug near the fireplace! Even the head's still there, with the teeth and everything!"

Huh. A bear fur rug, huh.

"Yeah! Really warm and comfy to sleep on, since it gets really chilly up there!"

How do you react?

[]So, did you sleep on it with Sayaka or what?
[]How secure is it? God dammit, Kyoko, those are details I should know.

A holiday cottage? By a lake?

...Well, it does sound like Mami to have one of those things. She works harder than anyone you know - it'd make sense for her to have some place to retreat to, away from the city, in case the job gets too much on the nerves. You have the same kind of thing, too - just that your version is a dingy bar staffed by a large, scowling man with the world's biggest afro.

Still, it...kind of reminds you about what you saw during the seeing, earlier. A cottage in the mountains near a lake. But that's just a coincidence, right?

You have to make sure, though. Even during times like these, you can't afford to drop your guard. Not for a moment, because as Malal had so succintly put it, the people you're up against have no concept of playing fair, and a moment will be all they need.

You ask her, then, if the place is secure at all, and if so, how much? How populated are the areas around it? What are the other ways that the site can be accessed, besides the way you're taking? Any blind spots? Dammit, these are the details you need to know!

"...Whoa." Kyoko turns to you, the cheerful mood gone, replaced by a dismayed surprise. "...Is that really you, Murderface? I mean, you know, you'd have taken the hint by now. But seriously? You're goin' on full paranoia mode on your DATE?"

She shakes her head. "Well, okay. Jeez. Let me think...it's kind of out of the way, so there's no other cottages around, but it is near the road we're currently on. There's a gas station down the road from it, an' a convenience store. The lake's small and doesn't connect to anything..." It's here that she frowns at you. "Aw, hell, can you just take it easy? It's not just me that's gonna be there, you know! Kuma-tan's also going to be there, except she's not really on guard duty. If it'll get you to dial it back a bit, I'll assign her as my backup just in case. There, you happy?"

Kumatora? The newbie you trained? What's she doing there, then?

"Search me! Midori-chan's idea, though - when I drove them back here she was lugging around boxes full of papers and stuff! And they couldn't stop talking about scenes and framing and dialogue...manga stuff, I guess? But yeah, Kumatora'll help." She lets out a breath through pursed lips, creating a raspberry sound. "Man. Guard duty for a date! Career first!"

Ah, knock it off. Wasn't she at all worried about security during her dates with Sayaka?

"I was more worried with showin' her a good time!" Kyoko snaps back. "Even more in Mami's cottage, I never even thought about that kinda stuff, and--" It's here that the red-haired Eversor snaps her mouth shut, her cheeks going red as her hair.

Ah. So. She did take Sayaka here, too. And no doubt the thing with the bear fur rug was part of that experience?

"N-no comment," Kyoko manages, blushing furiously. "I ain't sayin' nothin'!"

Right. Sure. Do you need to watch out for any stains or what?

"Aw, fuck you, Murderface!"

The both of you glare at each other from the rear view mirrors, before grins slowly break over your faces. You chuckle at this, before giving the back of the driver's seat a lazy kick.

"Anyway, just relax, will ya? It's gonna be fun. Just take it easy for tonight, go back to your ol' paranoid self after." Kyoko's voice regains its cheerfulness some, but not enough to rob the seriousness in her voice. "She deserves it, you know? Midori, I mean. She couldn't stop crying during the first day of our stakeout."

Midori? What was she crying about?

"Who else? You, of course, ya maroon." Kyoko shakes her head. "And her friend, I guess. The one she lost in Siberia. Didn't tell me much, but she's holding back a lot, Murderface. Up to you if ya want to help her through that, or just let her deal with it herself."

>Mami is a stone cold murderer, yet eversone seems to like to hail her as a hero.
Purely because we're on the same side.

Or so it seems.
>>

In the event they do we can just jump into her skin and kill them ourselves.

oh, I absolutely think it SHOULD be exploited in the bedroom. Just maybe not today, and not without finding out what effect it actually has on Midori. And us for that matter.

Anything that Kyubey has stuck in someone's contract probably isn't supposed to be a kinky sex toy, but if the soulgem fiasco proved anything it's the virtue of being willing to experiment.

Here's the problem.

Chiaki doesn't actually know that.

Yet. Trust me, once the investigation of Mami's stalkers gets underway there'll be a lot of unraveling to swallow.
>>

And the fact that she thinks she knows what's best for everyone. And how her emotions are unreliable, going by the Kirika incident.

There's plenty of reasons not to trust her.
>>

Which is why I don't vote for Chiaki to use Yuu to hold Mami to the ground and demand answers, naturally.
We have no choice but to watch Chiaki go through complete emotional betrayal of at least one of the only two people she trusts implicitly.

Sorry, person who's writeup I didn't like, but I didn't like it and I will not read things I do not like. Especially when they are not a main part of the work nor are they necessary to enjoy and understand it.

If we really do need meta knowledge from them, I'm sure someone will tell us all about it when it comes up in-quest.

Don't lie to me.
>>
>>28596080
We already get a ton of OOC knowledge in the quest itself, between all the alternate viewpoints we see. We've gotten way more meta information from them than we have from the writeups, other than the identities of a few golden weapon users.
>>
>>28596192
I try not to let that color my choices either.

I have every intention of working my way through the writeups eventually, though.
>>
>>28596181
The DEagle is good for close-range reactive engagements. We do need something for longer ranges, which may end up being Mami's Musket.

...Well, of course you'll help her through it. You owe more to her than you remember, and then some. Besides, your own way of dealing with that kind of shit...well, Mami probably wouldn't be all that happy if she found Midori chasing painkillers with whiskey. It's just not done.

You were expecting Siberia to come up, to be honest. Siberia's a dodgy issue for the both of you that would need talking about sooner or later. You just didn't want to hurry the issue or pressure her into it. Some wounds need to be left to fester first before they can be lanced, that kind of thing.

"Yeah, I gotcha." Kyoko nods. "Well, so long as you're gonna be there for her, I'm good." Another sigh. "Ya know, I know she came from the Tenth, and I heard from Mami-san what she was doing when you got her, but...I don't know, Murderface. She's way too nice for this kind of job, and..." Her voice trails off into a hanging silence, one dangling over the both of you.

...And what?

"Aw, nothin'." Kyoko shakes her head after a moment. "You're my Warmaster, an' I'm not gonna tell ya how to do your job or anything like that." She glances at you from the rear view mirror. "What I am gonna tell you is that you gotta make up your mind sooner or later, too, Murderface. Are you doin' all this just because you like her too, or you're just really grateful?"

Ah.

"That's the kicker, ain't it?" Kyoko manages a laugh, here, but it sounds more forced than anything else. "I mean, if you two're just best friends an' all, and you don't think it can go beyond that, well...ya just gotta make it clear to her beforehand. If it's the opposite, make sure she knows too. But you didn't really need me to tell you that, right?"

...Yeah.

"Thought so." And it's here that the trip resumes in silence. A comfortable one, yet with some things still left unsaid.

Soon enough, the car exits the highway and turns into a rather hard dirt road, and then into a cemented driveway belonging to a cottage. At the sight of it, you let out a sigh of relief - it doesn't even look remotely similar to the one you saw during the seeing.

That was a veritable palace in itself, on a postcard-perfect background of verdant green grass and sapphire waters. This was an old-fashioned, rustic cottage - certainly modern but made to look as if purely constructed out of brick. It's...it looks charming, and would have cost anyone loads of money.

"Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I saw it, either," Kyoko seems to read your mind here as the both of you alight from the car. "Really fancy, eh? And look, it's just on top of a hill overlooking the lake - so it's got a really awesome view from its second-floor balcony." She crosses her arms behind her head. "I'm saving up for something like this myself, hahaha!"

Well. Good luck with that.

"Thanks! I got the location all picked out, too!" The red-haired Eversor grins. "It's gonna be back at Okinawa, and it's gonna be near the forest and everything, and--" It's here that she blinks. "Uh, don't tell Sayaka, alright? It's kind of a surprise."

Yeah, sure. Lips are sealed, and all that.

"Oh, Miss Matsuda!" A short, lithe form lugging a couple of boxes in its arms strides out from the cottage's front door as you approach. Kumatora, it looks like. "Miss Sakura! You're pretty early, we weren't expecting you for another hour or so!"

"Hahaha, well, I wanted to make sure Murderface here isn't late for her little appointment with Midori-chan!" Kyoko grins, before walking forward and ruffling the shorter girl's hair playfully. "Midorin still making you help her draw her porn comic, huh?"

"I told you, Miss Sakura, I volunteered, and it's an adult graphic novel," Kumatora explains patiently, despite her hair being mussed up completely. She turns to you, her smile widening - before her eyes go wide, suddenly, as if just now seeing you. "M-Miss Matsuda! Those clothes...!"

"Weird, huh?" Kyoko laughs. "I know, that's my reaction too! I mean, she looks great an' all, but it's weird seeing her out of costume!"

...Is it really that weird?

"N-no! No, of course not! Miss Matsuda looks..." It's here that Kumatora turns crimson. "Miss Matsuda looks really cool!"

You 'look' cool? You're...well, that's great and all, but what does that mean? Does it mean you don't look cool in your normal getup? Your Magical Girl costume doesn't look cool at all?

"Huh?" Kumatora blinks at you, both eyes wide. "N-no! No, of course not, Miss Matsuda! I-it's just that, um, I..."

She what? What was it, then, if it wasn't that?

It's here that Kyoko cuts in. "Ah, no, Murderface, maybe ya got it wrong--"

You hold up a hand. No, it's okay. Ishikawa's a big girl, she knows what she said. You nod towards Kumatora, signaling for her to continue.

The twintailed Eversor swallows audibly, before looking to Kyoko desperately for help. All she gets from the redhead, however, is an averted gaze and a nonchalant whistle. "R-really, Miss Matsuda, I didn't mean...I..."

What? What didn't she mean? You don't know, she said it. First she said your costume isn't cool, now she's saying it isn't?

"M-Miss Matsuda..." Kumatora seems to be shivering slightly now, her face pale, the boxes she's holding quivering the slightest bit.

You stare at her for a few moments more, before Kyoko pokes at your side again. "Oi. You're gonna make her cry, you know."

"W-what...? No, I wasn't going to--!" Kumatora protests, before suddenly realizing what you've been up to. She pouts at you. "A-aah, that's mean, Miss Matsuda! And you too, Miss Kyoko!"

You shake your head, allowing yourself a small smile. You were only kidding, but you worry about Kumatora sometimes. She may fold under questioning, if she gets captured by a rival Officio or something.

"Of course I won't, Miss Matsuda! I still remember what you taught me, after all!" It's here that Kumatora beams again, getting her enthusiasm back. "No witnesses!"

Kyouko guffaws at this. "Hah! Classic Murderface!"

Well, anyway. Where's Midori, then? And what's up with the boxes?

"Ah, Midori-san is getting ready inside, Miss Matsuda!" It's here that she gives the boxes she's carrying a shake. "And these are...well, to be honest, these are Midori-san's stuff, actually. She told me not to look inside, but, um, I couldn't resist, and--"

And?

"I do think they're unpublished volumes, Miss Matsuda. Of Midori-san's work. Manuscripts and stuff - they just need to be sent in to the publisher. Print-ready stuff."

Huh. But why bring them here...?

Kumatora shrugs. "Midori-san really didn't say, Miss Matsuda, I--"

Kyoko nudges you again, before gesturing towards the cottage again. "Maybe you can ask her yourself, then."

You look up from Kumatora, and see...well, Midori, come out from the cottage herself.

In a way you've never seen her before.

She's wearing a rather form-fitting black dress, the figure-flattering sort you've seen Iori wear too, during the gala. Her hair let down and teased into silky straightness, flowing down her back in glossy green waves. The slightest bit of makeup accentuating her features.

Is...is that what she looks like? Are Callidus supposed to be this pretty? You've never seen her wear anything else other than her usual black hoodie and stuff, so...

As if reading your mind, Midori smiles at you. A nervous smile, but trying its best not to look the bit.

"Sempai," She says, her voice small, quiet, sounding just as shy as she felt.

How do you react?

Fran is what happens when you don't clean out your bellybutton. It starts out as lint, but then the next thing you know it's crawling on the ceiling in the dead of night, stealing snacks and scurrying to the dark under your couch as the lights flick on.

But then it grows. It can no longer subsist on the leftover food scraps littering the kitchen of some lob. It needs more. So some family pets go missing. Not for food, no. This is a greater Purpose.

The Fran integrates itself into the base of the spine and assumes direct control of the neighbor's dog. No more yapping. No more barking. Only cold, soulless obedience from the k9 host.

Using the mutt, fresh bodies are sniffed out. Parts. String is woven from stray hairs and the webs of unlucky spiders. This string will be used to stitch the found parts into a new form for the Fran to inhabit.

And inhabit she does. The Fran forces itself into the patchwork corpse, filling, twisting, consuming every last morsel taking up space in its new space.

But she's not done yet. She's only just begun. You see, it needs new parts. Optimal parts. How can you expect her to walk with one leg longer than the other? You can't expect that. It's inhuman to do such a thing.

She needs more. She will get more. And that's why you clean your bellybutton really good.

I think it was more of a "right place at the right time" situation, really. "Use an illusion and make people think you're someone else and then hit them when they're asleep" isn't exactly Sun Tze level strategy mastery. And Midori's powers still aren't that amazing, the nun with mind powers from Kazumi can do shit that makes Midori look pretty small time.

Though I'm worried. I keep getting the feeling the only reason Chaki hasn't had her intestines scatter though the wall is because Pinky is somehow slowing Raven homu down.

You find yourself unable to talk for a while. It's...a strange thing, really, when you think about it. You've always been of the opinion that Tomoe Mami was invincible - both in the pancake-making category as well as being a looker. No one else had really impressed you in that kind of way, not that you look at that kind of thing to be impressed with in any case. But Midori...well, suffice to say even you got bowled over by it.

Well, who wouldn't? She was looking forward to having dinner with you, enough that she went through all of this trouble to look good. You, who even had the audacity of thinking of barging in here with only a jacket over your Magical Girl costume.

Idiot, you could almost hear Sayaka shriek. You fucking idiot, Murderface!

"You look...nice," You finally manage to croak out, inwardly horrified at the awkward tremor in your voice. Feeling as underdressed as you could possibly be, at the same time unable to shake off the feeling that you're going to ruin this night somehow. That everything wrong that you've done would actually come crashing down on you at this very moment, ruining the night that Midori - one of the few people you haven't disappointed yet - had obviously been planning for quite a while, and had been working hard to pull it off.

No. No. Don't think that. Just...get through this night without thinking that. It'll go perfectly. Nothing will happen. Midori deserves this.

You're just not sure if you deserve it, too.

"R-really, sempai?" Midori replies shyly a moment later, her cheeks going pink. "I...Kuma-tan said it might be a bit too much for a date--er, a dinner and all, but..."

Well. Er. It...it is a bit formal, you venture out. You were expecting a dinner somewhere in the Mall district, or something. If you'd known it was going to be like this, then maybe you could've dressed a bit better.

"O-oh, no, sempai!" Midori shakes her head. "You look pretty good, too...! I mean, well..." It's here that the green-haired Callidus seems to regain a bit of her own composure. "It's not as cool as your costume, but it's a nice kind of different."

Huh. Well. That's good to know, you guess.

Just before things get awkward again, though, it's here that Midori seems to relent to her instincts - stepping forward and taking your arm. "I-in any case, sempai! Let's go and have dinner, quickly! Before...before I lose my nerve and everything!" She smiles at you, a brittle smile, clearly nervous and not at all confident about this - but desperately trying to be.

You allow yourself to be dragged. But...she's not going into the house? Isn't that where the dinner's supposed to be?

"Oh, well, we're doing it outside today, sempai!" Midori's grip on your arm is warm, smooth and impossibly soft. Reminding you of how you'd been relaxing earlier in your own quarters. "The view's much better, too!"

Ah. Well. You'll take her word for it, then.

A few moments' walking brings the both of you behind the cottage - and in its yard facing the lake. There's an expensive-looking dining table set placed right there, in the middle of it, with a spread that wouldn't look out of place in yet another expensive restaurant. The table set for two people.

And she's right, you think as the both of you take your seats. The view is pretty good, with the moon above shining down on the lake, making the ripples across the surface glitter with light.

"I got us Italian cuisine, sempai," Midori murmurs from across the table. "Is...is that okay?"

Italian? It's...well, you don't really eat much besides pancakes, so...

You shake your head. No. No, it'll be fine. Whatever it is, it's food. You're sure it'll be delicious.

"Ah. Well, alright, sempai." Midori smiles at you, sheepishly. "I was thinking of pancakes, too, but I thought something different would be nice once in a while."

It should be, anyway, you reply as you pull off the silver cover off your plate.

...

Spaghetti...? With meatballs apparently the size of fists. Really big meatballs! You're not sure what's the point of packing balls of meat as huge as these.

"You don't like it, sempai?" Midori looks up at you from her own plate. It seems she's gotten some rice covered in cheese and mayonnaise, with some bits of herb and peppers? What's that, omelette rice or something?

"N-no, sempai, it's Risotto..."

Ah. Right. Well. That certainly is Italian. You think.

Well, no, spaghetti's fine. You've had spaghetti before. Pretty sure you do.

Just not to this...extent. The most experience you've had with the stuff is with the instant noodle variety, with the egg noodles and the packet of chunky ketchup.

"Oh, I see." Midori smiles. "Well, I hope you like it, sempai. I, um, I made it myself."

...Huh. Really?

"I can cook other stuff besides ramen and takoyaki, you know, sempai," Midori says somewhat sullenly, although the smile on her lips tells you she's not as hurt as you thought.

Right. Well. Here goes, then.

The both of you give thanks for the food, before digging in.

...Hnh. Not...bad. The noodles are a bit soft, and the sauce a bit tangy, but...it's actually pretty good. Good spaghetti. ...Then again, all you can compare it with is the instant kind, huh?

"How is it, sempai?" Midori asks after your first couple of mouthfuls.

How do you react?

You cut one of the fist-sized meatballs in half with your knife, the two halves steaming in the cool night air as you do so. From what you can tell, it's properly cooked all the way through, and after a taste - made rather masterfully. No, you don't know the first thing about cooking, but damn if it doesn't taste good.

"You'd make a great housewife," You hear yourself say, and very nearly choke on the pasta you've been swallowing as what you said sinks in a moment later. You just have enough time to see Midori drop her fork on her plate with a loud clatter, her face going completely and utterly red before you down your glass of ice-cold coffee in an attempt not to choke to death.

The hell did you say that for?! You're not wearing your hat right now, right? You checked! You checked before leaving the goddamn Officio! It's in your Inventory!

This is all YOUR fault!

"U-um, well...if...if it's sempai..." You hear Midori murmur, and the two of you glance back at each other, you with plain disbelief and her with the same horror-filled expression that you'd been sporting mere heartbeats ago. Horror at her own self.

Silence. Painful, heavy silence.

And then--

"Ah, ahaha, I mean, j-just kidding, sempai! Hahaha!" Midori is the first to break it, flashing both a peace sign and a very forced smile, and you try to chuckle along the best as you could.

A moment of silence, and it's then that you both hunker down to eat once more, just as embarrassed as each other.

YOU'RE FUCKING IT UP, Sayaka is roaring at you right now. DON'T FUCK IT UP I SWEAR TO GOD MURDERFACE

...Quick! That...that H.A.D thing Kyoko taught you! Do it! DO IT NOW!

I yawned and stretched my arms over my head. Security duty might not be nearly as phsically demanding as combat, but it was still exhausting; the need for constant vigilance taxes the mind and dulls the senses. It's boring, monotonous work, to the point where I'd almost rather be getting shot at instead.

"Just another forty-five minutes, Tanya. Hang in there." The short, white-haired girl walking beside me shot me a half-smile, which I returned.

"I know, Sonja. Can't wait to get out of this armor." I gave her a wry grin. "As nice and shiny-new as it is, it gets old after being shut in it for twelve hours at a time."

Sonja nodded fervently, and wrinkled her nose. "That, and I think my environmentals are acting up. It smells funny in here."

I nodded sagely. "That'll be all that chili you ate last night. Honestly, I don't know where you put it all."

The younger girl swatted my armored shoulder and, judging from the noise that emanated from my com, blew a small raspberry at me. "I can't help my metabolism. Perks of being young, I suppose.~"

It was my turn to blow the raspberry. "I've got what, three years on you? I'm not old. And you can blame the smell on that metabolism of yours, too, so I don't begrudge you it."

Sonja shrugged. "At any rate, we're not going to be in these much longer." She turned and snapped out a textbook-perfect side kick, watching appreciatively as the Cadre armor's artificial muscles bunched and flexed with her own, lending the kick vastly more power than she alone was capable of. "I do like them, though. I wonder if we'll get to keep them."

"Davin has them on a probationary basis." Linde's voice sounded in the channel. "We'll be running a few operations with them. Depending on our performance, we may be permanently redesignated as a Cadre unit."
>>
>>28599274
I raised an eyebrow, a gesture I was amused to note Sonja mirroring through her transparent faceplate. "Sounds like kind of a big deal, Boss."

"It is. Warmaster Pavlovena's been making noises for some time about re-founding the Cadre, and this is her first step in actually doing so."

"So why us?" Sonja's voice was considering. I suppressed a smirk. For a fourteen-year-old, Sonja had a strong grasp on how the Officio did its internal business.

"I'm...not entirely sure," Linde hedged. "There could be any number of reasons. Let's stay focused, though, shall we? We'll have ample time to speculate on this later. For now, give me a report."

I manipulated my helmet's datalink, patching the camera feed through to the HUD Linde's implant projected across her vision. I panned the camera across my field of view. "Nothing but concrete, metal, and water out here. No sign of any sort of disturbance."

"You've made a full perimeter sweep, then?"

"Of course. All clear, nothing to report. Except one minor altercation; two of the off-duty guards in the cafeteria, but that situation resolved itself."

"How?"

I grinned. "You remember Jack?"

"That one dude who never takes his balaclava off? Facial scarring, or something?"

"That's the one. Anyway, yeah, one of the other guys apparently got into the Sar'Major's scotch, and took issue with Jack not showing his face."

"And how did that end?"

I chuckled. "Predictably. Last I saw of the poor bastard, Jack was carrying him over one shoulder off to Medbay. He should be fine, once the doc gets his shoulder back into its socket and checks for concussion when he wakes up."
>>

>>
>>28599274

Oh boy. I'm still waiting for the first real Spess Mahreen, Tiny Pete not counting.
>>
>>28599299
Linde laughed. "I'll give him one thing - ugly mug or no, our lad Jack knows his way around a fight. He and Rev had a go in the ring the other day while you two were on patrol. She won, of course, but he put up a pretty good fight."

I grinned. "The way he's built, I'm not surprised. How did it go?"

"Well, he had reach, but she had flexibility. He managed to keep her at arm's length for a while, but she absolutely floored him when she got in close. By the time she was done with him, he couldn't see straight!"

I raised an eyebrow. "We're...still talking about fighting, right?"

Rev's distinctive laugh issued from the com. "Yeah, he wishes it wasn't just fighting. Not bloody likely."

Our collective laughter was interrupted a moment later as one of the guards used his emergency override code to break into the channel. "Freon, Bulldog. We may have a situation."

I blew out a breath. "This means we have to keep the armor on, doesn't it, Boss?"

---

We stood in a semicircle around Linde, watching as she rolled a small metallic cylinder in her palm.

"Tranquilizer?"

The man standing beside her, who wore the stripes of a Sergeant Major, nodded. "Each holds enough to knock a man out. We've found four of our men unconscious in the last hour, each with a dart in him. We found a fifth who'd been choked out."

Linde's eyes narrowed. "You think we've been compromised?"

The man nodded reluctantly. "It looks that way. Unless this is someone's very bad idea of a joke."

Linde smiled wryly. "I'm not laughing, Sergeant. Are you?"
>>
>>28599324
MAXIMUM LEWD... I MEAN ARMOR
>>
>>28599328
The Sergeant chuckled. "I suppose not. I've already taken the precaution of having the men patrol in groups of three; hopefully, at least one will be able to report in the event of a breach."

Linde nodded, considering, then turned to us. "Rev, you and I are suiting up. Zero, Pawn, you two stay together. You're our mobile reserve and rapid reaction, such as it is, and what there is of it. Sergeant Winters, I want your men on alert. Don't make it obvious, but I want every inch of this facility searched."

Winters nodded. "And if we find the intruder?"

Linde's voice was cold and flat. "Capture if it's feasible. If not, I'd rather have them dead than escaped. See to it." The Sergeant saluted, spun smartly on his heel, and left the room.

Rev turned to Linde. "My armor's down in the Armory for maintenance. I'll hook up with you on the outer shell once I'm suited up."

Linde nodded, and turned to go. "All right, People. Let's be about it."

---

Barely ten minutes passed before we got a break. Or, rather, Rev got a break.

A broken neck, to be precise.
>>
>>28599360
>MAXIMUM LEWD
I assume that's when it turns transparent
>>
>>28599370
When her med-alert went off, Linde ordered the bulkheads surrounding the Armory sealed off completely, to trap the infiltrator inside. Moments later, the three of us who were left stood outside one of the bulkheads. Sonja hit the manual override, and the three of us moved in.

Linde signalled us to split up, and for several tense minutes, the only sounds that broke our silence were murmurs of "Clear" as we moved through the sealed-off section of the facility.

We reached the room with Rev's transponder signal at roughly the same time. She lay on her stomach in the doorframe, head tilted at an impossible angle. Linde motioned Sonja forward, covering the younger girl with her battle rifle. I looked around the room for any sign of the infiltrator, but saw nothing.

Sonja bent down over Rev, before jerking back and shaking her head muzzily. She reached up to pop her helmet seal. "Getting some weird interference. My HUD's down." She bent down again to turn Rev over.

There was a ping!

The concussion grenade that had been concealed under Rev's inert body detonated in Sonja's face.

An instant later, something dropped from the ceiling and landed heavily on my shoulders, driving me to the floor. I made to get up, only to see a second grenade inches from my face. The world went white.

---

I awoke to the sound of combat. I blinked muzzily, trying to clear my eyes, and took stock of the situation. I was still face-down, precisely where I'd fallen. According to my HUD my suit wasn't compromised - it had just been the overpressure that had knocked me out. I rolled over onto my side. I blinked.

"Jack?"

The masked guard didn't answer - he was wholly focused on the armored Puella Magi who was doing her level best to put him down.
>>
>>28599391
Jack was good. He was very, very good, trained and experienced to the pinnacle of combat skill.

But Linde was riding the Tick.

Jack was wholly on the defensive, evading and redirecting blows as best he could. Linde, for her part, refused to let go of him - she stayed in close, strike after perfectly-executed strike chaining together in an endless flurry of blows. It was like watching a beautiful, violent dance, a waltz of flashing hands and sweeping legs, as Linde slowly pushed Jack further and further back. With one final palm-strike, she blew completely through his defense, hammering a blow into his diaphragm and slamming him against the wall. In an instant, she had her combat knife to his throat. He let his hands drop into a nonthreatening stance.

Linde's voice was clipped and without inflection - the voice of someone who was deliberately slowing down their speech from the hyperacceleration of the Tick. "You didn't fight like that the other day."

The man chuckled. "Only an idiot shows his skill before he needs it."

"Take your mask off." He did so, revealing a not-unattractive face. "Pawn, run a search through the Officio database. I want to know this asshole's name, where he's from, who he works for."

I activated my helmet's camera, and ran the resulting photo through the Officio's standing database on known security, mercenary, and military personnel. Moments later, a match came up.

"Kamijou Kyousuke, of Militaires Sans Frontières. Nothing too notable...." My eyes widened. "Until recently. He was mixed up in that clusterfuck at that idol's concert, working with the Ninth's Warmaster."
>>
>>28599411
Oh shit.
>>
>>28599411

what?
>>
>>28599411
"Interesting. Tell me, Mister Kamijou, what brings you all the way out here?"

Kamijou smiled tightly. "You know I can't tell you that."

Linde Van Dyke's eyes were hard, and her voice soft. "I know you don't want to tell me that. Not yet. Now, normally this is the part where I would call up my boss and have him start digging. But you've hurt my girls, Mister Kamijou."

Linde's combat knife inched its way down until its point rested against his stomach.
"I think I'm inclined to do a bit of...digging...myself, if you prove uncooperative. So I suggest you start talking, Mister Kamijou. I am not a patient woman."

Yo, my first time here, i hope it's not too bad.

***

As Sally stumbled into the church to evade her pursuers she didn't exactly expect the doors to shut with a CLICK just -that- ominous. Neither did she expect it to actually stop them. Then again, the immediate cessation of all outside noises like traffic, yelling, agonized screams, police sirens and the intermittent chatter of machineguns should have clued her in that something wasn't all vertical here.

But then again she was new on the job, who could blame her?

So Sally slowly stepped back from the huge wooden doors she just had slammed shut with her magically enhanced strength timidly, carefully, afraid that something she would do, anything, could shatter the illusion.

Instead, she heard a bit of a cough from behind her. Whirling around she brought her fists up, ready to whip out a punch that could disintegrate flesh and bone at five meters' distance-

And only saw an old man with white hair, a five o'clock shade and a flatcap look back at her over the backrest of a pew, his face formed to a smiling sort of grimace. Sheepishly, she lowered her hands again, then stepped towards him as silently as she could. He sort of did look like a religious man; one had to be to show up at four in the morning at a church in the middle of the inner city.

The church was big and neo-gothic. And dark. And spooky. A few lamps at the altar lit the huge plain cross put up behind it.
>>
>>28599456

This caught me totally by surprise, I'm actually feeling a little dizzy right now.
>>
>>28599505

She silently sat down next to the man while he slid over a fair bit to give her some breathing room. Silence followed, since that seemed to be a theme in this church.

He was holding a thick, black bible. The book was worn and opened at the very end; he looks like he was reading before she entered. At her curious gaze he shut the book, holding it up for her to see. The painted-on gold cross faded and dull.

"I just wanted to take another look at what this funny old book says, haven't done so in a long, long time. Thought I'd start at the back, this part called The Apocalypse, that way I'd already know how the story ends, y'see?" he smirked at her in a voice somewhere between kindly old grandfather and blender full of gravel.

Her nervous giggle didn't exactly make the situation any more comfortable for either of them.

The old man shifted in his seat a bit and coughed into his fist. He glanced away to the side.

"So, I assume you didn't exactly come here to pray, did you?"

"N-no sir. You could say I am, um, seeking shelter? Y-yes, that fits." Sally mumbled while sheepishly scratching her cheek. Well, she WAS sort of sitting in a church while sort of wearing a full suit of sort of cobbled-together combat armor. Worst part was that it was her summoned costume and just dismissing it would raise another batch of questions she wasn't very comfortable with answering right now.
>>
>>28599525
He hummed like a subwoofer and then nodded. "Just as well. This is a place of safety and salvation for a reason." He gave her a sidelong glance and a smirk. "Though I suppose little rascals like you getting into trouble should rather ask their parents for help instead of their local priest."

She had to laugh, a little. If only her problems were still in that size category. Involuntarily, she felt herself relax a bit. At least this place seemed to be safe, for the moment.

"...well?" The old man grumbled towards her. Her head jerked up again and regarded his curious expression.

"Oh come on, you wouldn't have taken the spot next to the old stranger if you wouldn't have something on your heart you wanted to let loose. Go on, I'll listen."

What was this guy thinking of himself, asking questions like that? And why was he right? Well, the reason for the latter was probably that Sally had been caught up in a treadmill of assignment after assignment for over three months now with not a single day off. And that she had seen things, well. The less said the better. And of course, nobody cared enough to give her a few minutes of sit-down and talk-out. So yeah, this was probably a pretty good chance to get a bit of weight off her chest. Maybe later on when nobody was looking she could go AWOL for a day or two and blame it on the fighting this night, call it MIA. Yeah, this sounded like a good plan.
>>
>>28599548
If the incubator didn't mind-probe her to find out if she told the truth. Again.

Eh, she didn't care by this point. She needed a break and she was going to get it. A deep breath and a sigh later, she began talking.

"You're a religious person, aren't you?" was the first thing she said.

"Oh yes. Moreso than anyone else I might say." The old man smiled.

"Well, did you ever have, like, a crisis of faith?" She rested her elbows on her knees, then bent over and rested her head on her hands.

"Certainly, I do believe sooner or later anyone alive and living will have one."

She gave him a glance with narrowed eyes in return. "No, I mean more than just the usual. You ever have that sort of feeling that, you know, the one you've always been told about is so great and will save you when you fall and always fights for you, well, isn't all they're cracked up to be?"

The stink of rotting bodies. A sick bloodstained smile.

"Not just that, but really, that the one you've been thinking grandly of and looking up to is... well, the exact opposite? The one that's going to put you to the blade, throw you into the abyss and laugh all the way?"

Those claws. Her sheer being, a caricature of the Blessed Lady. But too authentic, too real.

"Did you ever have that feeling? Because I am having it right now. I don't exactly think what I am doing with my life is all that... right, or the way to go. Wether I want it or not."
>>
>>28599562
"Hmm. when I'm honest here, that's not really what I expected a thirteen-year old girl to say. But to answer your question, well, did you consider that maybe, the difference between the Devil and God is from our perspective non-existant?"

"Huh?" Sally straightened up. The man drew his smile a bit wider.

"Well now, consider history and etymology. The words Satan, Devil and Lucifer, in their original languages, carry meanings like the Accuser and the Tempter. Nowadays people often think of the Devil as the bad guy who sends you to hell as soon as he can get your fingers on you. But that's not necessarily the case."

Sally still didn't exactly grasp where he was going with this, but nodded along anyway. The old man leaned towards her a little.

"God has a court, young lady. The one Court. And someone needs to play the persecutor. Heaven wants to accept you, but your deeds in life will be what colors God's judgement. So the Devil takes the role of the tempter, the one trying to lead you astray and towards Hell and he will be the one to call out your sins on your own Judgement Day."

Sally furrowed her brow. This was getting a bit strange for her. "Yeah, uh, I don't really understand how this gets to my point at all."
>>
>>28599580
The old man leaned back and coughed in his hand again. "Excuse an old man for rambling. What I mean is, God gave you the Devil to test you. The one laughing at you and tempting you to do bad things, God put him on the job." He smiles again then. What a damn smiley.

"Someone needs to separate chaff from wheat, you know? And that's where contracts come into play. It's a really easy way to tell the sinners from the saints."

She jerked when he mentioned 'contract'. Did he...?

"Oh, I see you already understand what I mean!" the old man says, grinning. "Yes, contracts! Deals with the devil! Pacts with the underworld, power in exchange for servitude! And do you know what's the worst of it?" he says, his face barely an inch from Sallys'.

"N-no?"

"We make them everyday, that's what!" He falls back onto his spot on the pew. "Every day, the devil plays a bit of power into our hands. Every day he's right there, over your shoulder, whispering to you. When you could share the candy or keep it to yourself, he's there. When you can crush another's science project so yours ends up looking better in the end, he's there. When you hold the gun and- ah, I suppose that metaphor is a bit far-fatched for you, little one. But still. Whenever you get your fingers on a little bit of power, it comes from him, the adversary. And the larger the amount of power, the stronger a person you need to be not to give in to any evil desires."
>>
>>28599509
I'm seeing way too much spaghetti going on, guys.

I wanted to get the spagetti out of the way with in front of Kyoko so we could at least attempt to be a normal human being in front of Midori.

You fuckers have got this all back to front!

That's what I get for sleeping on the job, I guess, but I honestly didn't think you'd be able to fuck it up as badly as this. Jesus, I should have been expecting it.
>>
>>28599601
That... that actually made some sense. When she rolled it around in her head a bit, and bent it somewhat to fit her worldview. Made sense in respect of politicians anyway.

"And that is good! It is the freedom you have been given by God. You have the choice, Heaven or Hell? One must consider, you make this choice every day again and again. That is the beauty in God's plan."

And then he leaned in again.

"So, little lady. It seems like you've already had a few contracts in your time."

Sally starded sweating and swallowed her own spit. "Eeeh, nandemonai desu..."

He laughed the laugh of a mall Santa, then clapped her on tha back hard enough to make her cough.

"It's okay, it's okay. Just keep in mind: the Lord is watching! He doesn't like to see His sheep fall by the wayside and follow a bad path! Do what your heart tells you and I'm certain you'll find the right way through the world. What these old crocks sell in their books here is way too unweildy for someone like you, who no doubt has lots of stange and confusing things happening to her everyday, hoho!"

She laughed, too. Ha ha. Yeah...

Yeah.

Then a sharp voice cut through the warm atmosphere like Amanda's steel wire cut through necks.

"Creeping up on young women again, old man?" Sally turned around.

Behind her, in the middle of the path between the pews, stood a man. Black shoes, black pants, black heavy-set coat, black hat. Skin chalk white, or whiter. Dark eyes. He did look old by the lines almost cut into his face, but he stood ramrod stiff and the piercing look in his eyes spoke of- well, she wouldn't call him a killer, but something in that general direction. He seemed to be cut right out of the darkness covering the church itself.

"Hah!" said the old man over his shoulder. "You're the one to talk!" He dusted his legs off and stood. Turns out this old man was fairly spry for his age too. "You don't let an hour pass without bothering me, don't you?"

"You've grasped the essence of my existence, dear doctor." The dark man spoke again with a voice like razors. "Though I really must say, this try is a bit.... lets say, unfriendly?"

"Ah, stop it already. I need to go to the ends of the world just to have my peace from you for five minutes and it seems like this place worked out better than the last." The old man said, stepping next to him. "Shall we go then?"

The dark man just raised an eyebrow at him. "Did you lose all sense of etiquette on your quest to get away from me?" He nodded towards Sally. "At least say your little... 'friend' goodbye."
>>

how does that have anything to do with my post?
>>
>>28599629
Silence reigned for a few seconds, broken only by the tapping of the old man's shoes against the floor. "A nice fellow, isn't he?" said the dark man, who just kept standing there while his 'friend' left. Sally couldn't help but nod.

"Just like Robert." "Robert?" Sally asked, turning to the man. "Yes, Robert. You met him earlier this night, didn't you? You can't tell me you already forgot him."

The great wooden doors fell shut loudly that moment. And Sally remembered a blue shirt with a nametag on it. 'My name is ROBERT', in thick permanent marker.

"If I remember correctly, you walked up to him and asked him some funny thing. Then while he was laughing, you had a little social faux pas and hit him. I'm certain he'd have forgiven you sooner or later but he seemed a bit short of breath, what with most of him being spread over the surrounding cars in the parking lot. Pesky things, those security guards, but-"

And that's where his voice stopped cutting and started piercing.

"-you've got to do what you've got to do, right? Especially when the mission is on the line."

How did he get behind her?

Sally sprung up, brought up her fists and got into a fighting stance. Her face had already shifted from mild apprehension to frightened alert. Who was this? What was his angle?
>>
>>28599648
"Sally Sullivan." The sound of her own name made her fall to the ground like a doll with it's strings cut. A feeling of dread ensnared her heard like ice-cold razor wire and wouldn't let go. The dark man- were those red lights in his eyes, staring at her from under the brim of his hat?

"You had the luck of meeting one of my associates in person so I'll give you a hint that most everyone else needs to figure out all for themselves." And then he was whhispering in her ear. "You still have a chance. Not very much of one, but you do still have it. Try to make it count."

And with that, the pressure bearing down on her from all sides just up and vanished.

Sally looked around. She was alone in the church. She immediately got up and made to leave but a glint on the floor caught her eye. It was the cross on the old bible, left behind on the cold stone slabs of the floor. Acting on an impulse from somewhere deep inside her animal brain she picked it up. 'It might come in handy at some point', she thought. Out of curiosity she let it fall open. There was a business card stuck in the pages, so she grabbed it and took a look at it. In gleaming white text on the coal black card it read:

ERITIS SICUT DEUS, SCIENTES BONUM ET MALUM

She looked past the card, on the page it was stuck in. It was the first page of the Revelation. The Apocalypse.

Sally took to her heels and ran.

And done. I'm Megative by the way, should have put that in the name field.

Mephistopheles, the Devil (and from the picture that I posted further up, the color palette and rolemodel for Kyuubey) associated with Doktor Faust, the doctor that had studied everything that one could have studied back in his day, he who was lusting for more power and knowledge. And he made a bet with him, a wager for his soul, overseen by God himself: Mephisto would serve Faust for his entire time left on this world and fulfill him every last wish and in turn, Faust would do the same if he ended up in Hell. The Devil himself would hive him power, all the power he could ask for, and, after the Devil's calculation, it would only be a matter of time until Doktor Faustus fell to evil and earned his damnation without the Devil himself having to do anything but let him have his way, whatever that was.

Suffice to say, the story wouldn't be as popular if it was as flat as the standard deal with the devil a lá Ghost Rider.

That's cold, NECO, and uncalled for.
She tries her best, and actually survived the Murderface Experience as her apprentice with her cheer intact. I think that deserves a little more than that.

>>

Are you going with Goethe's interpretation? Because I have to say, Mephistopheles really did not count on Faust's unquenchable desire and greed to tech really fucking fast, and the Devil's inability to provide it.
>>
>>28599971
I thought both were demons. Okay, that works. That means there's a plethora of other supernaturals in the verse. Very interesting to see where you take this.
>>
>>28599978

in hind sight, I'm actually really surprised the old Murderface actually took on an apprentice in the first place, probably with a bit of persuasion from Mami

Yes, I read the original. Only the first part is what I like to work with though, the second went to weird places that don't work in my clean-cut headcanon.

>>28600016
Well, I guess you'll have to wait and see, but they're not exactly supernatural. God is always watching, and the Devil is always inside your heart. Magical girls should know this especially well.

>>
>>28600098
Oh, you mean the weird bit with the homunculus and the Greek gods showing up? Yeah, that all kind of seemed to conflict with different Hell's and different afterlives.
But I still liked how Faust did end up winning the wager by exploiting the loophole; just keep asking for more and more, and get Mephistopheles so frustrated, that he eventually breaks the rules without realizing.
>>
>>28600098
>second went to weird places that don't work in my clean-cut headcanon.
I suppose so, since it ends with Faust winning everything and ascending to Heaven without even being penitent or renouncing his ways. He just kept demanding more and more from Mephisto, that if the second part was written for a /tg/ audience, Faust would have demanded Eclipse Phase level of technology and demanding the reversal of the heat death of the universe. Not quite the cautionary tale that everyone thinks the story is supposed to be.
>>
>>28600371
>>28600238
The second half was extremely relevant for the time period it was written in, he made references to governments, kings and so on everywhere which is of course way over the head of us today unless you're a major historician. I disregard it because it's just not the The Way The Bible Should Make Sense: The Book that the first part was. Gretchen's death and the circumstances around it just made for a much more satisfying cutoff point. To me, the story was always about the wager being a direct metaphor how, well, basically everything the old man told the little girl in the storyposts further up. Power is a temptation and if you want to be a good person you need to act responsibly with it. And nobody can send you to hell but yourself, thats a good thought to hold onto too. Not that I'm religious at all, I just really liked the book.

I mean, ask yourself this: how many of our protagonists in this little world would be going right into the flames as soon as their soul gems shatter? Food for thought...
