YOU ARE LOLI,

And you have just returned to Skadovsk after your first successful errand run for Beard.

"I'm back, Beard!" you call across the bar. "I did it!" you add, happily.
As you enter, calling out, a number of faces turn to see what the commotion is. All of them return swiftly to their own business, however one particular head catches your attention. The man in the back corner turned away from you incredibly fast when he saw who it was...

Intrigued, you make your way over to his table to see who it is. As you round the corner and see the man's face, your surprise renders you near speechless.

"...Ice?"

He looks you straight in the eye.

"Ah cack. You saw me." His expression is one of blank apathy.

You're not sure how to react to him. The last time you spoke, it was over the fresh corpses of his friends (whom you looted) before he left you to face an angry bloodsucker alone.

[ ]Accuse him of abandoning you.

Why would we be mad at Ice? Not like our attention span is nearly powerful enough to hold a grudge.
>>
>>28563318
You throw yourself at him, gripping him in a tight hug. "Ice! I missed you! I haven't seen you in forever!"

His expression doesn't change as he tries his best to disentangle himself from your arms, but you keep a firm grasp, giggling happily. He's the same Ice, alright.
"Sure," he responds in a deadpan tone. "The last time I saw you, you were looting the bodies of my comrades."

...And your beaming smile falters as you try to form a response to the accusation. Your giggling has been attracting the attention of the men at the nearby tables. A few are clearly listening in to your conversation now.

You release him from the one-sided hug and stare at your feet. "...I just... I... thought they might have had more chocolate..." After a moment, you glance back up to meet his gaze, pulling the best puppy-dog eyes you can.

"Uh huh, and when you discovered they didn't have any, you just helped yourself to their other valuables..."
He looks up at the ceiling, then sighs deeply, a large amount of the tension draining from his body.
"And somehow, I just can't be mad at you for it." With the lack of drama, the other patrons lose interest in you two and go back to their drinks and conversations as Ice continues: "it almost makes me feel bad for what I did to your mutt..."

"You mean... Doggy?" Your eyes light up as you realize you may have a lead on the whereabouts of your faithful companion. "You've seen him?!"

Ice scratches the back of his head. "Well, the mutt came bounding out of the bushes straight at me one day. I just... reacted..."
Your hand grips your chest as the horror of his implications crosses your mind.
"Oh no, no, he's fine!" Ice changes tones as he tries to calm you, "at least, he wasn't too bad... when I left him. There's a guy local to this area, has his own pet monster. I left your mutt with him. He seemed to think the beast was fine. That was two weeks ago, though. No idea where he'd be by now."

"Thanks for looking after Doggy for me, Ice!" you say, giving him another quick squeeze before hopping away. "I've gotta go do some things though. I'll see you later?"

"Yeah, sure," he intones. You give him a full grin before crossing the bar to Beard. "Hi hi! I brought you your money!" You pull the wad of cash and plonk it on the bar.

"Well done, well done," he gives you a toothy smile as he picks the cash to count it out, separating your payment as he does so. "It's all here. Have any problems on the trip?"

"Nope, none at all~!"

His smile grows. "Fantastic. Up for another job, then? I've got more for you."

You have to turn him down for now. "Maybe later. I'm going on a quest now!"

You run up the stairs, burst into the doc's room (while he's apparently in mid-surgery removing bullet shards from a man's torso) and throw a fist-full of cash onto his desk. "It's all there, thanks bye!" You dart back out again and rush for the front door, eager to re-unite with Doggy. Before you get through the door, though. A thought crosses your mind. You don't know where you're going.
"Hey, Beard, do you know anything about the pet-monster-man?"

"Pet-monster-man? Ah, you mean Noah? Sure. He lives in a shack just a little ways North of here. Be careful though, he's a bit of an o-"

"Thanks Beard see you later!" you call over your shoulder as the door slams shut behind you.
>>
>>28564760
You start making your way north along the dried river bed, the same way you'd gone before. The trip is somewhat faster and easier now that you're not carrying a bag full of guns. Within just minutes, you make it to the still-smoking ruin of the barge. You pass it, and continue along the swampy riverbed. Ahead, at a fork in the river, you can see a large scrap-metal tower sticking out of the top of a small metal shack built up around a tug-boat wreck. You bet that's where this 'Noah' is.
You try your best to skip happily across the muddy ground to your destination, but it's not easy in such muck. It's kinda spoiling your happy mood.

The front 'door' to the shack seems to be a rusty plate of thin scrap-metal hinged to a another sheet with a loose bolt barely holding it closed.

"THAT HURT!" You inform the door of your dissatisfaction with this turn of events. "SERIOUSLY, WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?"

The doorway answers back, rather cautiously, "What d'you want, mutant freak?"

"Freak? FREAK?" you yell back, "Oh you are SO ASKING FOR THIS!" You storm up to the door, reaching for your pistol as you step inside. You're met by the sight of a small, young-ish looking man with a goatee, still trying to load a shotgun. From what you can tell of a glance at the cartridge he's loading, it appears to be bird-shot, not buckshot. That would explain the smallness of the holes in the door, and the lack of penetration through your body armor.

As soon as he lays eyes on you though, he stops loading. "Oh, hello there young one. What can I do for you? Would you like to take shelter from those mutant bastards with me? We have food enough."

At the mention of 'we', you glance about the small room. In the corner is-
"DOGG-!"
...no, it's not Doggy. You can tell this one's a girl just by looking at her. She's lying contentedly in the corner of the room at the foot of a rusty iron bed.

Noah follows your gaze at your outburst. "Ah, Lassie. Come over here and say hello to our new guest."

Lassie looks over to you, before sluggishly lifting herself up and waddling over to lick your hand.
"Hey mister," you direct at Noah, "did you take in a wounded doggy recently? He looked a lot like Lassie here?" You glance down as you mention her, and notice that Lassie actually looks to have quite a bit of weight around her midriff.

"Ah, that wild beast that got shot up by the Loner the other week? Sure! He and Lassie got on so well! Not sure where he'd be now though, he wandered off towards the water waste station a few days ago, and hasn't been back since. I'm a little worried, that area is full of mercs right now, and they'd do the smart thing and shoot a mutant on sight."

Another lead! You look outside, and see that it's starting to get dark; there's a little while before sundown though. You ask Noah which way the waste station is. He steps outside and points along one of the forks in the riverbed. "Follow this. You'll come to a big, big rail bridge crossing the river. The right side of that bridge is the station. You can't miss it."

As he's pointing the direction out to you, there is a sudden sustained burst of machine gun fire from that direction, and then silence.

Gunfire at night? Could be anything... It could be a lone mutant, it could be a
Or it could be Doggy getting shot at.
You won't know until you see for yourself. You set out in the direction of the gunfire, waving a quick goodbye to Noah as you go. The noise was not overly far away. A little ways down the river, and there's the bridge. It certainly is big! The banks of the river rise up quite quickly to reach some several dozen feet above you, and the riverbed itself broadens out to around a hundred and fifty meters across. The rail bridge spans the length of it, from a small compound on the left-hand shore to meet the gates of a large industrial building on the right. In the fading dusk light, you can see a few small lights starting to flicker to life inside the industrial building.
You can also see the silhouette of a man outlined on the edge of the river bank, right in front of you. He's got some weird-looking device strapped onto his helmet, and carrying a very large machine gun. But he's facing away from you, apparently distracted by something nearby. After a few moments, he raises his machine gun and sprays a short burst into the riverbed just around the bend from you.

An easy kill!

You scramble up the bank and flop down onto the earth beside him. "What we shooting at?" You ask him in your most innocent casual voice.

His reaction is somewhat more active than you were expecting. He cries out in surprise, spinning in the direction of the voice and opening up on the position where you would be standing. Of course, you're not standing, and the barrel is some four feet over your head. A whole lot of hot shell casings start raining down around you as he continues to fire at nothing. The muzzle flash in the twilight darkness is near-blinding you at this distance. You don't know how he's managing!

"GiltinÄ—! GiltinÄ— is here! I need reinforcements! NOW!" He continues screaming, apparently to someone he thinks can hear him, as he stumbles back away from you, half blind. After a few paces, you call out to him: "Hey mister, watch out behind yo-", too late.
He takes another step back and loses his footing on the loose earth of the river bank. With an undignified squeal, he slips backwards and over the edge as the ground gives way. A short fall later and you hear a SPLAT from below.

You crawl up to the edge of the bank and look down. His body lies un-moving on a small outcrop of rock a little way below you. His head seems to have cracked open rather messily on a jagged corner.

How unfortunate.

You swing your feet over the edge and drop down on top of him. As you do, you hear a faint sound of static, and a... voice?

"Captain? Team two here, we have eyes on Verrik's post, but he isn't there. We're moving in on that location now."

From your vantage point below him, with him distracted, believing himself safe, it's easy. You reach up, grasp his ankle and pull hard. The result is two-fold. First of all, it gives you the leverage to yank yourself up onto the bank. Secondly, it takes the bank from under his feet. He doesn't even get a yelp out in time as he rapidly drops the short distance, and also cracks his head on the rocks. You roll into a standing position, and find yourself face-to-face with the other two members of his team.

"What the-"
"Who-"

You grasp the bayonet attached to the right man's belt, and pull it. You use the momentum of the draw to open his throat, catching the handle with your left hand, then reversing the blade's direction to a two-handed thrust into the heart of the left man. Both fall dead without a word.

You turn to look down into the riverbed at Doggy. He's in a terrible state. Even with the flickering green filter you're viewing the night through, you can see the rips and tears in his hide and the blood streaking his fur.
You see him sniff the air a few times, and apparently catching your scent, he jerks his head about to stare directly at you.
You can tell from his expression that his wounds are very, very painful; but definitely not life-threatening.

"Team Two? I'm not hearing gunshots. What's taking so long? Hey, answer me!"

I was going to leave you alone, but you hurt poor doggy. It's not nice to hurt friends you know, Mister.

This I'd say...Also if all things go well. We should loot and bring the stuff to Noah's crip as a safe house then bring little bits at the time to sell at Skadovsk.

Let's loot the soldiers and leave. We already got doggy, and keeping him alive is the priority

You're not quite sure how this speaker-thingy works. You try to just talk to the bad men. "Hello? Can you hear me? Is this thing on?" When there's no answer, you run your hands along the outside of the helmet. Still nothing. Then, along the inside, around your ears- ah! There's some wiring to headphones, and on the left headphone is a button. You push it in. "Hello? Can you hear me now?"

"Wha- who is this??"

"Hi there! My name's Loli. You might know me as GiltinÄ—. Your friends won't be coming back, I'm afraid. You see, they tried to hurt my Doggy. So I killed them. Now I'm just playing with their corpses for good measure. And, well, I was trying to be nice, see? And just find Doggy and go home. But then I heard you order them to kill him. So I think you and me, we might have a problem."

"So I'm going to come kill you now~!" You begin to giggle uncontrollably before letting go of the broadcast button. That should set the mood nicely. Now to move off and set up a pretty little ambush for anyone coming after you. Doggy is already limping away from the open fire zones, clearly understanding what your intention is and getting himself to safety.

As you look around for good cover, your green vision flickers black for a moment before restoring. Does this thing run on batteries?

[ ]Move down into the river bed.
[ ]Get closer to the wall around the industrial building.
[ ]Stay in this area.

Now they should be mobilizing to take you out at your currently broadcast location. Therefore, the smart thing to do is not be here when they arrive. You start sprinting for the wall around the industrial building when you start hearing the satisfying sound of your opponent falling for it.

"Teams One and Three, converge on that location. NOW!

"Roger." "On it."

"Everyone else, defensive positions inside the compound wall. Anton, back on that catwalk now!"

"Yeah, yeah, never left. And Sir, think maybe we should change frequencies yet?"

The Captain curses loudly, before giving an instruction you don't understand. The radio line goes silent.

By this time, however, you're already pressed against the nearest wall, only a few yards from one of the main entrances. You can hear ragged breathing on the other side, and a little fidgeting, like men adjusting to more comfortable positions.

The only armament you have on you is your pistol, your grenade-launching American rifle and the bayonet you just took from Team Two. Not exactly the most prepared you could have been. You vision suddenly flickers black again for a moment before restoring.

There's a small gap between the wall sections next to you. You scoot over and take a peek through. On the other side of the wall are two men, both aiming rifles at the entrance. The nearest is within arm's reach of you. You pull you pistol, slip it through the gap and press it to the back of his neck, and pull the trigger once. You pull your arm back and slip away from the gap before the muzzle flash after-image has even finished clearing your vision.

"WHA- MAN DOWN! MAN DOWN!" The second man immediately swings his aim away from the entrance way to cover his fallen friend. You take the opportunity to rush around to the entrance, and lean out to place two rounds into his face at close range. He topples over into the concrete without another sound. On his belt is an object you've never seen before. It sort of looks like a smoke grenade, except it's too long and thin, and doesn't have a pin. You have an inkling as to what it could be, so you step into the open to pull it off his belt. As you're pulling it free, a bright green beam of light emanates from the catwalk around the side of the building inside the walls, and swings itself around to your location. You scramble back into cover, and the beam lingers on the spot where you were, before disappearing as suddenly as it appeared.

You take off along the wall, moving away from the river and around the compound.
>>
>>28569485
You find another gap in the wall further around, and poke your head through. Another two men are moving up very carefully to try and draw a line of sight to where you just dropped the previous two. They're moving quite close to the wall as they move. You wait, patiently, as they draw closer and closer...

As the first man passes your position, you slip your bayonet through the gap and jab at him hard, slipping under the night vision device over his face, and give a quick saw across his eyes. He screams in pain and terror, his teammate turning to loose a full burst of automatic fire into the concrete wall. "She's coming out of the walls! She's coming out of the goddamn walls!"

You wait until his weapon runs dry before breaking cover. "Ahahaha! Got your eyes~!" you call over your shoulder as you skip away, the man desperately trying to reload his rifle.

As you make it to a safe distance and start to approach the wall again, the world flickers black once more. And the green light doesn't come back...

You take the helmet off and toss it unhappily to one side.

[ ]Wait for your eyes to adjust.
[ ]Use your torch.
[ ]Backtrack, try and loot another helmet.
>>
>>28569631

[x]Backtrack, try and loot another helmet.

NVGs are a high priority right now.
>>

Yea, those things are proving helpful. Good to get another one.
>>
>>28569631
You stumble your way back to the wall, then place your hand on it for guidance. As quietly as you can, you follow it all the way back around to the first entrance. In the dark, you can just about make out the shapes of the dead on the floor. The closest, the one you shot in the face, is only a little way into the open. You reach about, fumble for a moment, the feel his helmet in your grasp.

You struggle to pull it from his corpse, but somehow manage to wiggle the sun strap over his face. Pulling it down on your own head, you find that you actually caused rather a lot of damage to it with those rounds. The image is fizzling in and out. You tap the side of the helmet a few times before the view stabilizes somewhat, only to realize that the bright green beam from before is back. And it's centered on your chest.

A voice in your ear. "Eyes on, got her."

You hurl your body sideways as a SNAP tells you the shot barely missed its mark. His beam, however, has given you his location just as much as its marked you. You respond by emptying the rest of your pistol magazine in his general direction as you run for cover, finding yourself once again against the wall closest to the river. You start to rush along the wall towards the bridge, getting as far as you can from your last known location.

"She's outside the wall against the river. Team Three, she's headed your way. Team One, move up behind her. We got her now."

Ahead of you, you can just make out the shapes another team moving across the rail bridge, setting up in positions to engage you if you go any further. Looking behind, the other team is rapidly advancing along the road behind you to close you in.

And once again, your night vision flickers and dies out...

Your only way out of this will be to break through the group in front of you before the rear closes you in.

You pull out the stick thing you grabbed from the dead man, and start fumbling with it, trying to find some way to trigger it. It's got no pin like any other grenade, but it has all the same type of military-style writing stamped on it. You're pretty sure this should work... there! You find the fuse pull and rip it. The device in your hand suddenly turns into a ball of blinding red light. Without another moment's hesitation, you hurl it with all your strength at the end of the bridge. You're rewarded with multiple panicked cries and the group falling out of position, hands reaching to tear their night vision off and cover their eyes.

You sprint forward and leap into the light, drop-kicking your first opponent square in the chest. He stumbles back, flails once, then tumbles back over the bridge railing to plummet to his death. You don't wait for the confirmation, though, rolling as you hit the floor in order to have your bayonet drawn to slash across the next closest. He falls in a fountain of blood, oddly colorless-looking in the deep red glow of the flare. The third stumbles back away from you and falls on his ass, waving his hands in a gesture begging for mercy. You consider it for the briefest of moments before a sniper round from the catwalk behind you flicks past you, ricocheting off the floor and blowing a hole clean through the man's chest.

"Vasily? Oi, Vasily! Where d'you think you're going? Team One I ORDER you to get in here! GODDAMNIT I WILL MAKE IT SO YOU NEVER GET A CONTRACT AGAIN!"

There are two more men trying to fall back from the wall nearest the bridge to the building itself.
You rush that direction, placing the building itself between you and the catwalk. Anton can't possibly get any more shots on you now. The two ahead of you are pretty much running blind, trying to get back as fast as they can. You're also about to run blind as you pass out of the flare's light. But before then, you make the distance and pounce onto the slower of the two men, reaching around to tear at his face with your nails as you both fall together. As you hit the floor, your hands finds the broadcast button on his radio. His screaming blanks the rest of the radio net, while you yank your rifle off your back around to hip-fire from the floor at the second runner. One of the rounds strikes true and he hits the dirt hard.

After leaving him to scream a little longer, you whip your bayonet about to silence the man underneath you. While you're here, you take a moment to check his gear and a find a couple of actual grenades, which you take for your own use. You also find a pair of spare magazines identical to yours, which you place in your vest pockets.
>>
>>28570615
There's a lull in the action as you're sorting your gear, before the net livens up again. "Seems she's got us surrounded now, Sir. Don't think any of us will be getting out alive. You know, unless we give you to her like she wants."

"What was that, grunt?"

"Well, it's true isn't it? She wants you. All we have to do is-"

BLAM

A single gunshot from inside the building.

"...Anyone else want to voice that opinion? Though not."

You move up to the side door to the building. On the other side, you have no idea how many guns are waiting for you.

You take a moment to reload your pistol, discarding the empty magazine. Placing it back in your waistband, you properly un-sling your rifle and prepare a grenade to breach the room.

Before you do, you touch your broadcast button. "He was right, you know. Your Captain ordered you to hurt Doggy. My Doggy. You were all just following orders, so I can forgive you this once. But Captain? Your actions are unforgivable."

The net is silent for a long few moments, as is the interior of the building. Then, a scuffling and a muffled cry.

"Alright, he's coming out! Don't shoot!" The door in front of you pops open, and a man in a black uniform and cap, bound and gagged, comes falling through the door. It is slammed shut after him, and you hear a bolt being slid shut.

"Oh, look at that. It would seem your mercenaries don't favor you, huh?" He looks up into your eyes in sheer terror.

As soon as the gag is loose, he simply starts begging. "Please, please no, it wasn't my fault! The beast, it attacked us first! He's been killing my men! Please just let me go don't kill me please, please I don't want to d-"

You place a rifle round through his forehead and his whining ceases. Opening the radio channel one more time, you inform the men of their Captain's demise. "This man committed the unforgivable crime of hurting my friend. This is what happens to those who hurt my friends. But you guys were just following orders, right~? So I can let you live today! And to celebrate, I think we should be friends. Just remember to play nice from now on!" You close the channel, and take off the damaged helmet, tossing it onto the lifeless corpse at your feet.

With that bushiness dealt with, you about-face and begin skipping away from the building out of the compound. When you make it back to the spot where you last saw Doggy limping to cover, however, he's nowhere to be seen...

[ ]He must've gone back to Noah.

You can't possibly have gone far! Not only was he injured and limping, but this ground is terrible for making good time over. You look about the area, for any signs to track him by.

Looking about the nearby area, you find a deep groove, like something's been dragged through the mud recently. You follow the little trench along the direction of travel for a short ways, to where it meets a shallow alcove in the bank. Inside, find Doggy curled up and apparently trying to sleep but whimpering gently to himself.

"Doggy? Are you okay?" You move up and place a hand gently on his muzzle. His ears perk up as he hears your voice, and looks up at you. As soon as he lays eyes on you, all his energy returns. He jumps up onto your chest, knocking you flat on your back. With his paws on your shoulders, you're pinned in place as he begins vigorously licking your face.
