>What mysteries do the dead hold dear?

Previous Thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/28524878/

The combat training room is one of the largest rooms in the building complex that the Eldritch Society has taken for its own. Currently you are the only living thing in the room, except perhaps some rats and the odd spider or two. This wasn't the cast a moment ago, as your brother in arms Yen Chau and you were having a somewhat heated argument concerning your capacity as leader, or his need to protect others from you, or some nonsensical prophetic scenario where you get your entire murder killed.

It had escalated to the point of him assaulting you, which was turning out very badly for him. When you had him pinned, he attempted to shift into his true form, that of a spectacularly deadly Spectre....which somehow became a fatal dissolution of both man and symbiont. You are now kneeling in front of what appears to be black ashes, all that remains of your comrade. The sight of his body consuming itself might have terrified another but you have only just suffered through another friend being eaten alive as well as having bonded with your own symbiont.

For as glorious a day as it was supposed to be, there's been nothing but trouble and pain.

Your first response is to go fetch the Elders....the same Elders who plan on allowing your freshly transformed murder to do the bidding of a master spy who hasn't planned on using you to get closer to the Chrysalis Corporation, while sending you to a different enclave of the Society. Despite that you've managed to get them to let you remain with your friends and see their mission through, so maybe it is a small amount of paranoia. Still, this situation isn't going to look good to anyone.

[Con't.]
>>
>>28542326
It isn't ash that Yen – Gravedigger – has turned into at least. You're absolutely certain of that, less because of what you know than what your symbiont knows. As an Efreet, it does make a certain amount of sense that you would understand ash and molten materials somewhat better than average, and your symbiont has never given you reason to doubt the gut instincts it has shared with you yet. You do not know ~what~ it is, but it's definitely not ash. Not that anyone except the other Efreet would realize that very quickly. So the problem quickly becomes who do you inform....if you inform anyone.

[] It should be an easy clean up.
[] Transform, and inform the Elders yourself.
[] Send someone to fetch the Elders.

[X] Send someone to fetch the Elders.
[x] Transform.

You walk quickly over o the door and open it. There are a few acolytes around, and you flag one down. He walks over, confused, but seems amiable enough. “I need you to find one of the Elders and bring them here, please. Take....her with you, if you would.” It takes a little effort to not make it a command; he may not know you are a Tager. He nods and jogs off, co-opting another society member as he goes, apparently understanding the severity of the situation. A lean young man is near the door, and he glances at you; you passed him on the way in, so it must be someone Yen stationed to ensure privacy. “Don't let anyone in, except an Elder.” He nods, his eyes wide as you shut the door.

There is another entrance, but if Yen put someone there they are probably still there, and will be keeping guard, so it would be redundant to do the same. The less who know the better, for now.

Walking back to the remains of Yen Chau – and making sure you're standing on concrete – you transform from mortal Nazzadi into near-indestructible Efreet. The transformation is nearly instantaneous, flesh imploding, bones exploding, fire erupting in your veins and obsidian armor coalescing about your body. There is no pain this time; being reborn may hurt, but apparently that passes. You can feel the others in your mind, as they can feel you: a Tager among Tagers, seventeen of them, three of them your own comrades. A simple thought and you can inform anyone you need of whatever you wish.

[Con't.]
>>
>>28542529
((I saw everything, Anne.)) The apologetic, nervous voice of Viss in your head is the first thing you receive. For a moment you are confused, because you would have seen if she'd been in the room. Especially transformed, Tagers aren't small, and she's neither Spectre nor Shadow.

Oh. Whisper. Hypersensitive, capable of remote sensing and seeing through walls. Well, at least you have a witness, biased as she may be. That could certainly help....help....

….

Great. The girl with a crush on you can see through walls. Time to learn to enjoy exhibitionism.

Setting aside questionable relationships, you are contacted by the Elders; three of them are in public places and two are in the same location, so it is unlikely any of those three are doing something that can't be interrupted. They're transformed, as you are, otherwise you couldn't sense them. It suddenly makes a great deal more sense as to how the Elders know so much so quickly. Farsight, Jewel, and the Elder Phantom called Scrivener are immediately attentive to the voice of Towern. ((Stay there. Do not let anyone else into the room save an Elder. We will come to you at once.)) Even his telepathic contact borders on overwhelming; you wonder if that's what it feels like when you contact others.

[Con't.]
>>
>>28542546
Jewel and Scrivener respond at once: ((Agreed.)) ((Agreed.)) Farsight remain silent but you can feel his acquiescence.

This is one case where disobedience might actually be worse than death, so going anywhere else is out of the question. You can sense Jakob, who is in the pool and enjoying his new body, as well as Irren, though his presence is slightly muted in the mental map of your symbiont-sense. That leave Rechert and Holmes unaccounted for and obviously in human form. The effectiveness of a telepathically linked team of Tagers hunting Dhoan – Dhohanoids makes calling it a murder instead of a pack far more understandable!

Of course, this leaves you with one problem: Viss. She's currently on a rooftop, obviously transformed, and while you didn't tell her what you told the Elders, she's going to see and possibly hear everything that goes on unless you and the Elders stay transformed and use telepathy to communicate, which seems unlikely. You hope.

[] Have her come too.
[] Have her come as well, but in Nazzadi form.
[] Keep her in the loop, but have her stay where she is.

Oh yeah, I suppose this makes more sense.
>>
>>28542558
Have her stay where she is. If the Elders don't take our word for things, we can call her down and get her voice added to ours. Otherwise I think having a Whisper's senses keeping an eye on this room would be a good idea.
>>

[X] Keep her in the loop, but have her stay where she is.
[x] Other – Inform the Elders she is a witness, and note she saw it all.

((Viss.))

Her response is less a verbalization than a waiting command prompt, which feels a great deal weirder than it sounds like it should. Unlike radio, the telepathic bond carries as much or as little emotional content as desired. While you cannot do anything more than communicate, the scope of what you communicate is broad. You can also easily tune it out, with as little effort as setting a radio to standby – but it isn't radio. Whispers confirmed that a long time ago. Ether maybe?

((I want you to remain where you are. I will keep you informed as we go, but no need to trouble the Elders with it.)) Less that than having the elders trouble her, but the principle is the same.

((What do I get in return?)) Her response is playfully coy, despite the nervous undertone. Before you can reply, however, she continues. ((I don't mind. Better that way. Should I tell any of the others?)) Obviously you're not the only one who has meshed with her symbiont especially well.

((Anne.)) Farsight's voice in your mind is just slightly reverberated and distracting in a pleasant sort of way. He does not speak your name as much as inform you that he wants your attention. ((Ensure that no one enters, but downplay the severity of the situation if you can. Hint at some sort of minor accident or that your powers were less controlled than you wanted. Towern will be there promptly. He will explain as best he can. You are in no danger.))

[Con't.]
>>
>>28542726
He doesn't know you are in contact with Viss, which might be a good thing at this point. ((I understand Elder Farsight.)) It is less use of his name or call sign than it is an impression of him that you respond with, and it is instinctive to grant him some measure of respect despite your superior form. That particular thought is filtered by your mind, and he doesn't receive the impression. Which you are very grateful for after a few seconds consideration. ((Elder Farsight, Viss was watching – as a Whisper. She witnessed the situation, and she may or may not have heard anything.))

There is a moment of 'silence' which is nerve wracking. Then: ((That is all right Anne. I leave her to your judgment. I will keep her involvement to myself for now if you think she an be trusted to keep silent until you explain to her what has happened. She is now your responsibility.)) He closes the contact, but you could easily reconnect with him.

As what he has told you percolates in your mind, you realize that she is now officially part of a murder consisting of you and she. Not merely a comrade and friend, but a soldier and holy Warrior under your command, recognized by an Elder.

The very thing Yen didn't want.

((Anne?)) The communication isn't instantaneous, and you've kept Viss waiting. On the other hand, she was watching too, which means she may have sensed more than you did.

+Ask Viss what exactly she observed.

((Keep an eye out for anyone strange or panicking, but otherwise, we need to keep this to ourselves. The Elders are supposed to explain, and I'll let you know what they say. Then we can talk to the others.)) Her agreement is instant and non-verbal. More and more you understand why Dhohanoids have to come in small armies to cope. With a small group of Tagers. ((Did you see anything, anyone unusual or particularly interesting before Gravedigger died?))

((No, Anne. I was experimenting, experiencing, and I noticed him using the gravewind several times. Almost everyone has been experimenting with their abilities. I was mostly....)) You can't ~sense~ any embarrassment or pleasure, but you're certain Viss can filter just as well as you can. There's absolutely no reason to hesitate when you're not using your lungs to talk. ((….looking around.)) Uh huh. That's what you thought. ((But when you met him, I started paying close attention. I could see that there was something physically wrong with him. I can combine the scan with the x-ray.)) That's not exactly what she says, but the impressions are far more thorough than language.

Mordecai the sorcerer's words come to mind. ((Like they were trapped in some kind of membrane?))

Excitement floods your mind. ((Yes, exactly! Like they were trapped in some kind of polymer or liquid latex. And they just kept getting more and more entangled, both of them. Then something broke and they just....bled away into....something or somewhere. I can't visualize it properly.))

((That is all right Viss, try not to think on that too much. You did perfectly.)) The acknowledgment is both flattered and proud. ((I'm going to have to transform, so we won't be able to communicate for a bit. If you see me motion for you, come join us.)) Her abilities are almost enviable. Almost.

((Yes Anne. Also, Elder Towern and Elder Scrivener are approaching the main entrance, while Elder Jewel and Elder Slipt are approaching the back entrance near the infirmary. They're all human-formed; it should take them about five minutes.)) That's reassuring at least. You have your doubts that they'd assassinate you while a Whisper was Watching in any case. Yen's fears about anything harming Viss were sorely unfounded.

((Is there someone at the back entrance?))

((Yes, an acolyte who hasn't moved since Gravedigger stationed her there.))

((Just as planned undoubtedly. Thank you.)) You give your appreciation without vocalization and she responds in kind.

That settled, you need to make arrangements to keep the place secure. Sliding free of the flaming shell of yourself, you bask in the momentary warmth remaining....right before your feet start to hurt and the awful scent of burning composites surrounds you. Leaping a few feet away – scratch that, a few YARDS away – you slip off your shoes and stare at the scorched remains of their bottoms. A quick look tells you that yes, you did in fact liquify the surface of the concrete, which is still glowing a little at the upper edges. It's cooling quickly, but that is a relative sort of cool.

You're going to have to invest in some very special foot gear, obviously, or start going barefoot. Also while keeping your enhanced physical capacities in mind.

Approaching the door, you toss the ruined shoes into the waste bin, and open the door. There is an acolyte near the door already – the same one who had been standing near it when you looked out earlier – and he looks up at you from his kneeling position on the floor. “Yes, dame?”

We're trying to keep it quiet that anything weird happened, so let's not ask the guy anything.

[X] “The Elders will be coming. Keep your post please.”
[x] “Did you hear anything?”

You manage to smile despite the seriousness of your situation – basic counterintelligence – and with effort manage a casual tone of voice. “Sorry, but did you hear anything out here? And some Elders will be coming too, so could you hang around until they get here?” Get him to think what you ant him to think while making sure nothing was spilled.

You had no idea how easily the training would come to the fore when you were first having it drilled and beaten (often literally) into your head.

“Of course, dame, but I did not hear anything, no. Did something happen?” His question is almost perfunctory, rather than having any genuine curiosity about it.

“It's Anne. I set something on fire by accident, and I was hoping the alarm had been localized rather than general.” True, and true if not entirely accurate. Those screams were certainly alarming.

The acolyte gives you a wry grin. “I can certainly smell it. But no, there were no alarms or alerts. When the Elders come shall I alert you?”

You smile back, and shake your head. “No, merely allow them to pass. Which did sound better in my head, now that I actually think about it.” No chance of him 'allowing' them anything. “Thank you....”

“Warwick, Dame Anne.”

“Just Anne.”

“Of course, Anne. Will you be too much longer? I have to prepare for....” His smile falters, understandably.

You notice the Elders moving down the hall, at a steady pace and seemingly in no hurry. “Not too much longer. There are Towern and Scrivener, it shan't be long at all.”

He nods, makes the Voorish sign before you, and then bows his head in acknowledgment. The bowing of heads makes it easy to conceal awareness of other Society members, and such courtesies as the Society has are all basic, simple, and easily concealed when used....but the Voorish Sign isn't one of those. It increases the flow of ruach or orgone into rituals, and it can make the invisible momentarily visible, and annoy lesser entities, but last you checked you were neither invisible nor a lesser entity. Before or after the Rite of Joining. It isn't something done casually either.

It's part of why you took up magical studies despite your knowing that as a Tager – especially one of the great ones – you might not be capable of magic any longer. Yet you never did ask WHY people did that to you.

It's not the first time someone did that to us. Curious, but we currently have more important stuff going on,

Maybe if we find Mordecai later on we could ask him about that. Maybe conceal it as if we're curious to what spells we're capable of casting now that we're a Tager.
>>
>>28543128
We can't cast any spells. Nightmares, Vampires, and Efreets take up all the orgone/ruach a Tager has. It's pretty common knowledge. The others have half their orgone left, so they can cast spells.

[X] Leave it for now.

Leaving that mystery for another day you slip back in and walk back to the pile of black dust that used to be a friend of yours. Settling into a comfortable crouch, you think back to what Yen said just before he tried to shift into his warrior's body, he hadn't actually said 'the future is set in stone' but 'in stones.' You know he took his magical training very seriously, and his personal orgone must have been a heavy weight indeed with the needs of a Spectre to siphon from it. Rechert's must be fairly high as well, if that is the case, given Shadows also use a lot of orgone for their special abilities. It's entirely possible they studied together and practiced together.

Maybe they did a lot more together than you'd previously suspected.

After leaving a false tail at the behest of Elder Farsight and making sure the acolyte would write it off as a typical training exercise gone slightly wrong, there isn't anything to do but wait and see what the Elders have to say. Viss watching your back is a comfort, however. You might have to discuss some boundaries as well. Though her symbiont has made her a little more forward. It might be a good idea to research the foibles of the others as well – another surprise out of left field could be a disaster, or at least embarrassing. More embarrassing.

As Towern walks into the room, leaving Scrivener at the door, one of the other Elders, the Nazzadi Shadow whose call sign is Slipt enters via the other doorway near what used to be an office. She steps into the makeshift infirmary and collects a small kit, then resumes her walk to join you. You stand up, giving one last glance to the silhouette of darkness that is all that remains of Gravedigger, before steeling yourself to deal with Towern.

The big man is dressed in a simple gi-style silk robe and black umanori hakama pants.. Notably, he is barefoot as well. His eyes take in the scene, and he raises an eyebrow at your lack of footwear, before recognition of the burn marks in the concrete answers the question he did not ask. Apparently it isn't that unusual for newborn Efreet. Slipt, dressed much more conservatively in a Tager's standard combat uniform, crouches near the black dust, and opens the medical kit, putting on gloves. Towern simply continues to look at you, and when you do not immediately say anything, he gives a simple half nod of encouragement.

Towern takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly. Buying time to phrase his response properly. Not that you'd ever accuse him of equivocating. Efreet were nothing if not honorable, and you'd trust him before a Widow, Spectre, or Shadow. “On rare, very rare occasions, a Tager who makes it through the initial process of Sacred Union will act strangely. As if the symbiont and the host were at odds with one another. It happens....about one in thirty, forty....”

Slipt speaks up. “One in every seven to eight rituals, so the average is one in fifty-five.” You hear Slipt moving behind you, scraping the floor, and tapping glass vials, sampling the remains and studying them. It is a little nerve wracking to have what is effectively an assassin behind you, but you could probably survive an assault from her, at least long enough to escape.

Towern, not so much.

Towern nods slowly. “We don't know what happens, and it is absolutely unpredictable. Even if the candidate is otherwise perfect, and the symbiont chooses them, anywhere from hours to weeks later, they start losing their grip on their emotions and their thoughts. They start to act strangely, and eventually they collapse.” He nods to the black dust. “This is all that remains of them. We have had observers, mystic and mundane, technology, every imaginable way, and we haven't the slightest understanding of why it happens.”

“Well, that is as much as I can do here. All that remains is to clean up and arrange a tale.” Slipt pulls off a glove and sets it in a plastic baggie she's prepared, and then does the same with the other, sealing both. “I'll get these to Doctor Kalinka, but I suspect there won't be anything more to learn from that angle.” The young woman looks at you, and speaks in the 'native' tongue of the Nazzadi. “Your losses pain me as they pain you.” It is as close to sympathy the warlike language can convey.

You incline your head, acknowledging the sentiment. Slipt walks around the dust and you, to stand at Towern's side. It is interesting to note that he gives her the same wary glance you do, though only once and it's not as wary as much as keeping track of her position. It's not you then, it's her.

She continues, “What we do know is that it isn't a disease, or contagious, or anything of the mortal plane, unless it is the mortal themselves. Sorcery training, combat experience, Human, Nazzadi, youth, age, vitality, symbiont type after the union....even genetic scanning doesn't help predict it. It was just....a coincidence that it happened so quick and to one of your own.”

“Does Mordecai know as well?”

“All of the Elders know – in all of the enclaves of the Eldritch Society. We have worked hard at understanding, but there is little that we can discover.” Towern looks at you, and crosses his arms. “Will you tell us?” It isn't an order, or a command, but from him it doesn't need to be to seem like one.

Despite that, helping the Elders learn from your experience prompts you describe what you can of Yen Chau's actions and behavior, both just after the ceremony and here, in the training room. You'd planned on offering, if not to Towern and Slipt, then to Doctor Kalinka or Mordecai. It doesn't take much to slip into the soldier's recall: you were here, this is what you saw, this is what you did, this is what happened next. Basic information delivered straightforward and to the point. For now you keep Viss' observations to yourself, as Farsight suggested; more than likely she wouldn't enjoy the experience and you expect you'll go through similar situations when you debrief.

Towern interrupts occasionally, but only to clarify how Yen acted, it seems. Every time Towern asks a question, as a matter of fact, it is entirely focused on that.

Still, after your short tale he does ask one other question, the same one that stuck in your mind. “He said that, 'the future is written in stones'?” As you'd feared, the phrase doesn't seem to ring any bells for the other Efreet, and you glance at Slipt, who shakes her head. “I cannot think of any prophesy or fortune telling that concern you or your companions, Anne. Certainly nothing in the Ta'Ge Fragments, that would have been incredibly obvious to anyone.” There are few in the Eldritch Society who have not been over them with a fine tooth comb.

“What did you mean by crafting the tale?” You have your suspicions. An ignominious death for a Tager sounds – FEELS – a little like blasphemy.

Here Slipt steps in. “What we will do, is to let people know that Yen Chau-”

“Gravedigger.” They look at you, surprised. Expressions you aren't really certain you enjoy being on the receiving end of from Elders. “He claimed it as his call-sign before he died. T seemed to....center him a little. Not for very long.”

With a glance at Towern, who indicates his approval with a nod, Slipt explains. “Gravedigger will be sent on a reconnaissance mission given specifically by the Elders. He will gather some vital intelligence, and then die in action; he will be honored and his funeral will be held, just as it would be for any who have undergone the Ritual of Sacred Union.” Despite her seemingly callous wording, you can see that she in her body languge means what she says – that she does consider his death as worthy and honorable as any Tager who dies in the line of battle. Or during the Rite of Joining. “Since we have already made such plans for your team and yourself, it will seem natural; with no way to prepare anyone for this, there is little that we can do to avoid it, so we must hide it for now.”

“Thank you.” You're not certain it is the best way to go, but this does give the friends and Society some closure, rather than adding a little more despair to the ailing world.

“I need to get these to Kalinka. I ~am~ sorry for your loss, Anne.” Slipt walks away, circling you and the dust, to take her leave.

Towern watches her go, then turns to you. “I suspect you have other questions for me, little sister. Let us commune, and see what we can make of you.” He gestures towards another area of the training room, one with much greater reinforcement....

Still, better safe than sorry. No need to give them unnecessary information that could come back to bite us in the ass.

Oh good, they weren't nearly as draconian about it as I feared.

So aside from the fact that Yen died and Viss is going to need some talking too, we came out of this fairly well.
>>

I think we need to talk to Rechert too. Between the stones and that weird reaction to 'prophecy' i think Yen was up to something.
>>
>>28543622
Yeah, and we'll need to check out what's with everyone giving us the Voorish sign.

For now, Viss and Rechert should be under close observation. Yen seemed worried about them, for some reason - whether it's jealousy or there's something more, we'll have to check it out.

Coming up, a skill list, meant to give you an idea of her basic skills.

I'll put an actual character sheet together shortly.
>>
SKILLS: Counterintelligence, Intelligence Operations, firearms (Light-Medium-Heavy Pistols, Long Range Rifle), Close Combat Training (melee and unarmed), Arcane Studies (Novice), Tager and Dhohanoid Identification, Meditation, Medical Training, History (N.E.G and Nazzadi), Government Organization, Languages (Basic Esperanto, Nazzadi, English + Pnakotic, Tsath-Yo)

SPELLS KNOWN:
Create Arcane Space: Creates a purified area for magic to be done in.
Ward of Solitude: Prevents supernatural and outside influences into a large area of effect. Also dampens magic.
Eldritch Faculties: Allows you to sense and detect magical forces, unseen influences, and other eldritch forces.
Phantom Vision: Grants you the ability to scan and observe any place you have been to before from a remote location.

You know OF several others, but nothing more complex than a novice could potentially cast, so there is much outside your areas of expertise magically.

ARCANE LANGUAGES KNOWN: Pnakotic, Tsath-Yo.

Incidentally, I do take suggestions outside the votes under consideration. Write ins are always more potent than simple votes, though they can carry more risk as well.

So we know spells but are unable to cast them. Well, at least having some knowledge about them would prove useful.

That's why she didn't study harder (also, not a very high intellect compared to most sorcerers). She was well aware she would not be able to use much magic afterwards.

The spells were a bonus for achieving a high Conviction.

Great. Thanks for running this, it was fun as always.

Any idea when the next thread is going to be?

Not sure. I tend to avoid weekends, but I may make an exception. I may also run tomorrow, but I am not making a promise at this time.

I do have a twitter, which I should add t the intro, no that I am reminded.
