You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

It was quite the day... you explored the town with Marianne, Luciana and Takamaru, visited Volker's grave with Citrine and somehow ended up with a great-grandmother, and then the two of you made friends with a pair of adventuring siblings.

>Congratuations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

Cursing her inability to turn Nicolette down, Sylvie slowly makes her way back to the castle. She ate so much during that little eating contest that it felt like her stomach would burst... actually, it still kind of does.

And to top it all off, Nicolette still won and THEN she even went on to eat another freaking plate just to show off, all while Melanie stared at the two of them in horror. Yeah, that was definitely a Bad Idea.

After leaving the restaurant, the three girls all wanted to do different things- Melanie wanted to go look at jewelry, Nicolette wanted to go explore the city, and Sylvie... well, she's feeling rather sluggish on account of downing four plates of spaghetti so she decided to call it a day then and there, and that's why she's currently walking back to the castle by herself.

Such is the hazard of having a total glutton for a best friend...

Fortunately, all this walking helps the food digest so Sylvie's feeling a lot better by the time she finally makes it through the castle gate. After taking

a few minutes to figure out what she should do now that she's finally here, she eventually decides to go to the suite that she's sharing with Melanie and poke through the magic books that she brought with her. Seeing as how Reinhold hasn't learned any attack spells yet, she figures that it would probably be a good idea to look up one or two that are easy to learn just in case he decides to ask for a magic lesson.

After a few more minutes of walking, she finally makes it to her door, and...

"Oh, THERE you are!" a female voice says as its owner places a hand on Sylvie's shoulder, sending her jumping a few feet forward in surprise.
"Wha- who's th-" Sylvie says as she turns to face whoever it was that decided it would be a funny idea to scare her.

And of course it would just HAVE to be Princess Luciana.

"Wh- what was that for!?" Sylvie squeaks, still more than a bit flustered.
"I see that you're as jumpy as ever..." Luciana laughs. "That's always been one of your cute points, you know."
"That's not funny..." she sighs. "Did you come here just to scare me, or did you want something?"
"Actually, yes!" she says, smiling. "There's something rather important that I wanted to speak with you about... would you mind if I came in, or would you prefer that we went to my room instead?"

"Umm... come on in?" Sylvie says as she opens the door and holds it for the red-haired princess.
"How kind of you!" Luciana cheerfully replies as she enters the room.

After Sylvie closes the door behind her, Luciana wastes no time in making herself comfortable on the couch.

"C'mon, take a seat!" Luciana says, patting the cushion on the opposite side from her.
"Umm... okay?" Sylvie replies as she does as she was asked. "So, um... what did you want to talk to me about?"
"Right to business, I see..." she sighs. "Alright, I'll get right to the point then."

After taking a deep breath, Luciana turns to Sylvie, a serious expression on her face.

"How serious are you about Reinhold?" Luciana asks.

"EH- WHAT DO YOU MEAN-" Sylvie stammers as her face turns beet-red.
"Exactly what I said," she replies. "It's as plain as day to anyone who's around you for more than five minutes that you have a thing for Reinhold, but what I want to know is if you're serious about pursuing him."

Freaking out internally because she was not at all expecting to be put on the spot like this, Sylvie closes her eyes and takes a deep breath before facing Luciana once more.

"Y- you're right. I like Reinhold," Sylvie sighs, finally having actually said it outright for the first time.
"Oh?" Luciana says, an expression of mock surprise on her face. "Are you sure that it's not just some puppy love thing? I mean, you don't exactly have much direct exposure to boys aside from your father and his friends..."
"It... it's not," she replies, finally having shifted to serious mode. "It was just a little crush back when he and Nicolette made me play referee for one of their sparring matches, but, umm..." she sighs.
"Just from something little like that?"
"Who cares how it started?" Sylvie replies, getting annoyed. "We've spent a lot of time together since then, and it's not just a little crush anymore... I- I LOVE him, alright!? I love him and now I'm spending most of my time thinking about how much I want to get married to him!"

"God, I'm so stupid..." Sylvie mumbles as she buries her face into her hands.

"This is just great," Luciana says, laughing bitterly. "I guess that I do need to count you as as rival after all... but are you sure that you wouldn't rather give up on him? Because if I can find some way to make Father recognize him as a potential husband for me, I -will- make my move..."
"I'm not going to step aside," Sylvie says quietly. "Not for you."
"Even though my father's the big scary King of Marconetti?"
"That doesn't matter. And even if it did, my father's a -lot- scarier than yours. I'd step aside if it was Nicolette who liked him since I love her like she was my sister, but you and I aren't that close."

With the atmosphere in the room having gotten extremely tense all of a sudden, Sylvie braces herself for an ultimatum or a challenge tro a magical duel or something similar. But much to her utter confusion, Luciana instead starts laughing.

"Well, this is certainly going to be fun!" Luciana laughs. "I suppose that I really do have to consider you a proper rival!"
"Wh... what...?" Sylvie says, dumbfounded.
"I thought that I might be able to scare you off with a bit of intimidation, but you really do take after your father after all!" she says, reaching her hand out towards Sylvie.

I'd rather go with Marianne or Melanie or Nicolette now. Anyone that isn't these two.
>>

With absolutely no idea what's going on now, Sylvie just stares at Luciana, who stil has her hand extended.

"Uh..." she says, unsure what to do.
"I, Luciana Violetta di Marconetti, do hereby recognize you as my rival in love, Sylvie Roseline Granache! Now let's shake on it!" Luciana says with a warm smile.
"Uh... okay?" she replies as she shakes the Princess's hand.
"May the best girl win!"

After an extremely awkward handshake, Luciana gets up from the couch and motions for Luciana to do the same.

"Now let's head to my room!" Luciana says happily.
"Wh... what...?" Sylvie says, just kind of staring at her new rival.
"I have quite the collection of grimoires, and Marianne was telling me that you've recently taken up an interest in magic... I've never actually been able to share my own magic hobby with anyone before, so I figured that I'd show my collection to you while you're here."

"You just declared that I'm your rival, and now you're inviting me to your room?" Sylvie says, completely confused.
"This is this and that is that! now let's go!"

With that, Luciana grabs onto Sylvie's arm and forcibly pulls her along.

"Nnn..." you groan as you sit up in your bed. You actually got a good night's sleep, with no messed-up flashback dreams or horrible nightmares or any of that.

And to make it even better, now you have the entire day to spend however you like! Deciding not to waste any time, you quickly get bathed and dressed, then pick up your pocketwatch.

It's currently 7AM. Great, you didn't oversleep or anything.

With a sigh of relief, you make your way out of your bedroom and into the living room area of the suite that you and Princess Marianne share. Looking around to see if maybe she hasn't left yet, but the only thing of note that you see is a food tray sitting on the table with a note close by

Picking it up, you see that it has the same fancy handwriting as the one from last night.

"I didn't feel like waking you up, but your breakfast is right here."
-Marianne

"...huh. Thanks," you say to noone in particular as you sit down at the table and remove the lid...

...and today's breakfast is crepes! Great!

Seeing as how there's nobody to talk to, you figure that it might be a good idea to figure out where you'll go after you get done eating.

Letter to the Luciana Faction:

The experience I have ha of your worth, and the happiness I have enjoyed in your friendship are wounding considerations when I look upon the present distance between us. Certainly my affections to you are so unchanging, that hostility itself cannot violate my friendship to your person. But I must be true to the cause wherein I serve.

The great Archelon, who is the searcher of my heart, knows with what reluctance I go upon this service. And with what a perfect hatred I look upon this war without an enemy. But I look upon it as an opus Domini, and that is enough to silence all passion in me.

We are both upon the stage, and must act the parts that are assigned to us in the tragedy. Let us do it in a way of honor, and without personal animosities. But whatever be the issue, I shall not willingly relinquish the dear title of your affectionate fried and faithful bro.

Even though Nicolette's pretty much your best friend, you haven't really hung out with her all that much lately... yeah, that's a thing to do. Go find Nicolette and see if she's up to wandering around the city. And Karel seems like a nice guy, maybe you can invite him too.

Oh, and Rana and Reya did mention that they wanted to hang out today... well, that at least seems like a starting plan. You can decide where to go after you actually meet up with everyone.

Having finished your initial planning, you make short work of your crepes and head out of the room, making your way across the hall and stopping outside the suite that Nicolette shares with her father.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

"Nicolette, you in there?" you call out.

After a few seconds, the door opens...

...and it's Sir Gregory.

"Oh, it's you. Hey," Sir Gregory says, looking as unhappy as ever. "Since I doubt you're here to visit me, I assume you're looking for Nicolette?"
"Yeah... sorry to bother you," you reply.
"Meh, don't worry about it. Nicolette just left not too long ago, she said that she was going to wander around the castle some before heading out to find something to eat. You might be able to catch up with her if you hurry up."
"Thanks, Sir Gregory!" you say with a wave as you make you way down the hall.

As you're about to turn the corner, you remember that it was actually pretty nice of Marianne to leave you those notes... though you would very much rather not miss Nicolette, there's still the matter of being grateful and all that.

As such, you make a quick detour to your room, where you tear a page out of your sketchbook and write a quick note...

"Thanks for the notes. And for the breakfast!"
-Reinhold

And as a final touch, you do a quick sketch of a little smiling guy that kind of resembles you on the bottom of the paper before placing it on the table and hurrying back out.

Now in extra rushing mode due to the time you lost, you walk through the halls as quickly as you can without breaking into a run (seeing as how you're a visitor here and you don't want to cause any problems).

Finally making it to the main area of the castle, you find yourself at a crossroads... there are several paths that you can take, and you waste a few seconds trying to figure out which way to go.

"Excuse me!" an annoyed voice calls out from your left.
"Hm?"

Turning to face whoever just said that, you see a fancy-looking guy in his twenties with curly brown hair and the gaudiest clothing you've ever seen in your life.

"I've no idea what a commoner like YOU is doing here in the castle, but I can assure you that it is in fact NOT acceptable to stand in the way of your betters like some foolish alpaca!" he exclaims in a voice that is way too high for a man to have.

You would very much love to call this -alleged- man all kinds of names, question his taste in everything, and insult him in every way you know... but then you remember the etiquette lessons that you sat in.

Those boring, boring lessons.

"Sorry for standing in your way like that," you say with a lazy salute.

With your apology done with, you make you way down the right-hand passageway... but he grabs your shoulder.

And you can somehow feel how sweaty his hands are through your shirt.

UGH.

"I don't know what barbarian country you're from or what you're even doing here in this castle, but I'll have you know that you ought to speak to your betters with the PROPER RESPECT," he says to you.

As you turn to face this... PERSON without giving in to your urge to punch him in his ugly face, you notice that some else has grabbed his arm.

Thus removing that disgustingly damp hand from your shoulder.

"And I suggest that you stop pissing this guy off before he uses that sword on his belt to lop off those sweaty hands of yours," he says with a smirk.

"Just because you bought your position, that doesn't mean that you can order me around..." the curly-haired fool mutters through gritted teeth.
"Oh, but it does," Girardot says tauntingly. "Like it or not, I happen to outrank you now. So get gone before we have an international incident on our hands."
"D- Don't think that I won't remember this!"

Shaking his fist in anger at the two of you, he scurries around a corner and out of sight.

A foreign princess who is allowed marry anyone she wants to. Absolutely everyone interested in rank or power is going to want to suck up to her.

This is kind of why, combined with her last bodyguard's shit, we're still distrusted. Marie's probably spent most of her life dealing with men who just see her as a way to get to the throne.

It's a good reason, it's why we should be EXTRA CAREFUL of anyone we meet, especially this guy, the only thing stopping him from putting on the same face the other guy had on was because he probably knows who we're protecting and may be trying to put in a good word with her.

"Eh, it's always a pleasure to piss that guy off," Girardot replies.
"Er... 'Lord Girardot,' was it? Who was that guy, anyways?"
"Just a minor noble from Perricone, nobody that you need to worry yourself with," he laughs.
"Uh, if you say so..."

Oh yeah, you're wasting valuable time!

"I was actually looking for a friend of mine," you say. "She has long silver hair in a ponytail..."
"Hm... haven't seen anyone like that since I got here this morning," Girardot replies. "Sorry that I can't help you, though."
"Don't worry about it, at least that means that I don't need to check the hallway that you came from. And thanks again."
"No problem, buddy."

With that, you wave goodbye as you head down the hallway in search of Nicolette. Walking quickly and keeping to one side of the hall in order to avoid a repeat of this most recent incident, you keep your eyes open...

So Luciana and Elena both got shit they want to do if they weren't stuck being princesses. Does Marie? She takes her responsibilities as future Queen seriously but she definitely doesn't seem to enjoy them. I feel like we tried to probe that info out of her with all the adventuring talk and such yesterday but maybe we should ask her instead of trying to figuring out. We kind of ticked her off giving the wrong impression when we tried to see if she wanted to explore more of the city.

So, I started reading this quest a few days ago and caught up, and I have to wonder

Why haven't we made a spell?

The structure seems simple and straightforward, and all that is really required is that you feel what you are talking about and not just speaking words.

we could do something like
"Sword of my soul, forged in the flames of my wrath, come forth and rend my enemies asunder: Valiant Edge!"
To have a blade whenever we need it.

I'm just curious, did Archelon say anything about this? or is it just a unofficial quest choice not to make spells?

Archelon, if you feel up to it, can you weigh in on this?
>>
>>28485805
That'd get in the way of the waifus, and we can't have that.
>>
>>28485818

>>
>>28485779
>So she probably just wants to be a normal girl

That's about as equally cliche as Luciana wanting to run away on an adventure, but it makes a whole lot of sense for her.

>>28485805
He's said before that it's actually really difficult and beyond our level.
>>
>>28485805
It seems straight forward, but it apparently takes a whole lot of skill to create a whole new spell. We can apparently make minor changes like changing the color, though.
>>
>>28484228
Bro, think about her position and the social time period, not to mention that she's ladylike. Thinking about getting married = thinking about having sex. She's not going to put out until after she's walked down the aisle, therefore, wanting to get married to him is wanting to be able to have sex with him. I really don't get why everyone's thinking she's a yandere. If her reactions were unusual, then Luci wouldn't have acted as normal.

>>28485805

Part of you want to try and surprise her, but there's a decent chance of that ending in you getting kicked in the throat or something. As such, you decide to take the safe route...

"Hey, Nicolette!" you call out.
"...r move alre-" Apparently talking to someone on the other side of the doorway, Nicolette cuts herself off midsentence and turns to face you. "Reinhold?"
"How's it going?" you ask, waving.
"Uh... alright?" she says as she hurriedly shoos away whoever it was that she was talking to before walking up to you. "You were looking for me?"
"Yeah, I was wondering if maybe you wanted to hang out today."
"Uh... one minute!"

Nicolette then scurries outside for a few seconds, saying something that you can't quite make out to someone unseen before hurring back to you.

"Alright, it's a date," Nicolette says, giving you a thumbs-up. "Did you have anything in mind, or did you just want to spend the day with a pretty girl?" she asks teasingly.
"I was just thinking about hanging out in general," you reply, ignoring her joke.
"Alright, sounds like fun."

"And now that I've found you, would you mind if I invited Karel along too?"
"Yeah, I don't see why not," Nicolette shrugs. "I just saw him a little while ago, so I'm pretty sure where we can find him..."

And so, Nicolette leads the way as the two of you head out to add another member to your party.

Oi, Arc. Compiled PGQ into a single file.
It can be downloaded here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n4nhs9gd0kmnnni/04tpEy5_pe

Available as an .epub, .mobi, .pdf, and .txt
I work on the .epub natively, so it gets updated fastest.

Current chapter organization is by Day/Interlude, rather than by thread.
Considering going back and adding character images for the first time we encounter a character. Do you think that would break the flow up too much in the early sections?

"Where was it..." Nicolette mumbles to herself as she inspects the area, finally stopping in front of a closed door. "Pretty sure it was here."

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

Nicolette knocks HARD on the door, tapping her foot impatiently before calling out.

"Hey, this is Nicolette!" she shouts, knocking on the door again.
"Uh, it's not that urgent..." you say to her.
"Eh, this is how you gotta do things here in Marconetti. Especially considering that..."

Before she can finish her sentence, the door opens and Karel peeks his head through.

"Umm, hello," he says nervously. "Did you need something?"
"Reinhold here wanted to know if you were up for hanging out with us today," Nicolette replies.
"Wha-" he gasps. "I- I'm really flattered, but I'm here with Prince Emilio and we're going to be busy all day..."

"Hey, Karel!" a boy's voice calls out. "Who's at the door?"
"YOUR HIGHNESS PLEASE STOP FIDGETING OR WE'LL BE HERE ALL DAY!" someone else shouts from inside the room.
"Eheh... he's in the middle of getting the final measurements for his birthday clothes, and it's taking forever," Karel says with an exasperated laugh. "As much as I'd like to get out of here, I'm kind of stuck. Sorry."
"Maybe some other time then," you say, shrugging.
"Heh, that'd be nice," he sighs. "Anyways, I guess I'll see you later..."

With an apologetic smile, Karel closes the door.

this is how galge work. You get time with each of the girls before you get to the major choices. That's why we're totally fine with turning down Sylvie at this point. We still have plenty of opportunity to get with her later.

I was actually kinda bummed that Karel was going to join us - we hardly get enough NicoNico as it is.

But we've already spent time with the girls. Or are you saying the part before the trip was just the prologue and we're only now getting to the opening act?

Of course not, anon.

It was the prologue to the prologue.

"Well, it looks like that was a bust," Nicolette says as she gives her arms a good stretch. "I guess it's just us, then..."
"Actually..." you begin, "...those two adventurers I was telling you about last night wanted to hang out today. Would you like to meet them?"

"Oh, the chick you claim can eat more than me?" Nicolette replies, a wide grin on her face.
"Uh, yeah..." you say with a chuckle.
"Fine with me. I assume that they're in the city?"
"Yeah, they said that they'd either be by the fountain or the Adventurer's Guild for most of the day."
"Cool, let's get going then!"

"sorry, it was just a joke."
"Yeah, whatever... anyways, I was talking to Sylvie. We were going to grab a few cinnamon buns before she went to hang out with Luciana or whatever, but then you showed up so I told her to go on ahead without me."

Bleh. We really should cut back on teasing Nico. It's not like teasing Sylvie, where she gets flustered in a cute way, or Luciana, who teases right back i na fun way.

Nico just gets angry. I don't want to make our bro wifeangry.
>>
>>28486393
>>28486407
It was Sylvie, almost assuredly.

We're in a foreign country, and there are only so many people here she'd know. She shooed them off at our approach, and we already know where Marianne and Gregory are. Not to mention that what she was saying could easily have been

>>28486464

>>28486372
I want to veto asking her to lay off on the matchmaking, for the most part because she's mostly doing it because she wants her best friend to be happy, and knows that she's turbo-shy about her feelings. So she's leveraging the cheerful antagonism they have to try and get her past her hangups about it.

>>28486522
Archelon. I got one piece of critique for you.

Stop using adverbs. Like seriously, cut them entirely out of your writing for a while. They're a huge crutch and explain what's going on without actually showing or describing anything. Pretty much the essence of telling over showing. It's a bad habit to use them so often.
>>
>>28486522
If you cant score a decent artist you just gotta lean more on 'novel' side of vn. You are good at it anyways and the story would be good enough to be enjoyable, it doesnt have to be all fancy pictures. They certainly are a bonus though.
>>
>>28486538
Thanks for the run boss.

Brodate gonna be good.
>>
>>28486522
You're going to have to use your own terrible scribbles to represent Reinhold's early drawings, naturally.

>>28486464
And now that I think about it, this could be a reasonable way to ask her to lay off a little on the matchmaking around us, if that's what people really want.

Just let her know that it's hardly fair that she doesn't want us to tease her when she gets to tease US on a technicality whenever Sylvie's around.
>>
>>28486538
I can't wait to draw Nico in a frilly dress.
Especially because she told us we'd never get to draw her in a frilly dress, back when we made that bet.
>>
>>28486594
Pretty sure that option won out. The only other votes were for something we already did and they weren't even the majority.
>>
>>28486594
A quester extrapolated that Nico said, "make your move already" to Sylvie.
Therefor I would not feel bad having Reinhold make the same assumption, if we want to ask Nico to cut the shit out.
>>
>>28486539
Care to clarify what exactly you mean by that?
I know I suck and would like to get better, but I can't into English sometimes.
日本語のせいだ。
>>
>>28486538
You an cool bro OP!
>>
>>28486632
Pretty much your words that end in -ly are his concern.
The issue he's raising is that an adverb, such as "nervously," TELLS us that the subject is nervous instead of SHOWING us through his behaviour/speech.
>>
>>28486632
Just going to copy-paste something from a writing resource I use:

24. Relying on adverbs.

Adverbs, those -ly words that modify verbs ("cunningly," "hurriedly," "super-cala-fragalistic-expealidoshously") are severely frowned upon by editors. I had a teacher who called them the monosodium glutamate of writing. The idea is that adverbs are a shortcut that gives no information or atmosphere. For instance, it is not nearly as informative to say, "She got up quickly from her chair," as it is to say, "She bolted from her chair." Or instead of, "He tried desperately to call his boss," to say something like, "At the phone booth, he stuffed his stolen fifties into the hands of everyone waiting before him until he was next in line, then pounded on the glass at the two teenage girls hoarding the receiver, and finally snatched the arm of a passing security guard, screaming, 'My wife's going to have a baby! I have to call home!' hoping that no one would remember the well-publicized mug shot and recognize the scar on his face."

When ridding yourself of adverbs, please try to avoid the most commonly used adverb, "suddenly" (and its synonyms, such as "immediately" and "instantly"). It is an easy out, and so overused that it seldom has the impact that writers would like. The concept can be communicated in more effective ways, such as drawing out the moment until, perhaps, a flash of sound or light sets into motion the post-"suddenly" action.

That was from the common traps section.

>>28486632
not that anon but he means you use adverbs too much, even when it is not necessary. One recent example is that you wrote
>"So, who were you talking to just now? Your crush?" you ask jokingly.
jokingly here wasn't really necessary, let the reader see and feel that he is teasing/joking with the dialogue. It is fine to use them but you use them a bit too often, it is better to relay that message with the dialogue, it will kind of make the reader feel it instead of reading and thinking it.
>>
>>28486669
>>28486686

This is fine for a narrative controlled by one author, but does not apply for quest threads where it's important to quickly get the gist of character attitudes and emotions so that the audience can make informed decisions. Don't just crib writing advice, adapt them to the context of quests.

I brought it up because he's planning on editing his posts for a VN and it's a bad habit he absolutely needs to get out of and needs to be aware of while editing.

Also, that is the most bullshit thing I've ever heard. Over-use of adverbs is just plain mediocre writing. Furthermore, no one, not even the autists of /tg/, is so incapable of inferring attitude and emotion that they literally need it spelled out for him. If someone yells at you, it's obvious they're pretty fucking mad, you don't need to say they "yelled angrily." If that's your complaint, then you should be encouraging Archelon to write well enough descriptions that his audience understands what's going on, not saying it's okay to keep relying on a crutch because he writes a quest.
>>
>>28486739
you see the statement that he uses them even when they are not necessary and the example of such a case right?
also i am sure he would want writing advice regardless, most qms would. they would want to learn and improve their writing in general.
>>
>>28486449
Unfortunately the editor doesn't support wrapping text around images.
I could still do it, but it would require that I go into the .css manually. And then the problem with THAT is that the editor would fuck it up every time I recompiled, so I'd have to go back and do it again after every thread.

I'll leave them out for now, and see if any of the other editors out there support the feature. Failing that, I'll leave them out entirely or perhaps put a gallery in the back.
>>
>>28486834
Oh wait no, I'm fucking retarded.
I totally forgot that I can just do that with the html, which the compiler won't forget.
>>
>>28486538
Thanks for the thread, Arch.
