You sleep uneasily the first night after your transformation into a chitinous horror. You might or might not find a comfortable position to sleep in, and the dreams that come are overwhelming.

You are someplace you've never seen before, in the flagstones of a ruined mud brick fortress overlooking a dry river bed. You feel a strong stirring in the ground. The earth crumbles a little. Then some of the bricks start to crumble.

You hear a voice, inhumanly deep, full of indignation, rising up from the earth. "THEY KILLED US. THEY LET THE HUMANS LIVE, BUT THEY FEARED US TOO MUCH TO OFFER THE SAME COURTESY. BUT THE SEVEN GATES OF ERESHKIGAL WILL NOT HOLD US, DAUGHTER. YOU WILL BREAK THEM FROM THE OUTSIDE."

You're not sure how to answer. That seems to make the voice angrier. "OR DO YOU STILL THINK YOURSELF ONE OF THEM? THEY WILL NOT KEEP YOU FOR LONG, DAUGHTER. YOU ARE NO LONGER ONE OF THEM."

>You can try to answer or just let this shit pass. Also, now is the time to post schematics for how you try to sleep. You have five sleeping mats to work with.)

You don't know what the voice expects you to do, but you don't care. You have other things to worry about. You just hold on tight and wait for it all to pass.

You wake up in the large storeroom that the Great Priests have converted into your personal chamber. Some food has been lid out for you. It's all human food, with none of the raw flesh that was available last night. The priests must have taken note of what you ate last night. Also, while you were sleeping you ruined your sleeping arrangement and burrowed yourself between the mattresses and the hard floor. Your back feels sore. The raw panic of yesterday has died down, but you still feel pretty awful.

You check outside your room. Some acolytes in white robes are guarding the door. But are they keeping others out, or keeping you in?

>Cont'd

I can't help but think pissing off the angry voice of the evil entity that we are inevitably going to release by ignoring it for a while is going to have unpleasant consequences.

Before you can ask them, you see someone else approaching your room. A woman, thirtysomething, musclebound, striped with scar tissue. Her right arm is an unnatural red color. She has a bundle of sticks under one arm and some kind of box wrapped in cloth under the other. The acolytes let her in.

She doesn't look afraid of you, exactly, but she's definitely wary of you. She stays just out of reach of your claws. "Hunzuu? I'm Nakurtum, armsmaster for the Adventurers' School. Are you ready to talk, or are you still getting your head straight?"

You know why she's here now. The priests expect her to turn you into their war machine.

"I'm fine. What did you want to talk about?"

She sets down the sticks and the box on the table. "As part of my debt to the priests, I've been put in charge of your training. This is... a unique challenge, though. I'm gonna admit it right now, I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I don't know any moves that would work with someone like you, for or against. I don't know how strong you are, and I don't know how much poison is in that stinger of yours or how strong it is. So this'll be a learning experience for both of us."

She picks up one of the long sticks, draws closer, and pokes you in your human stomach. "But we have to make one thing clear. While we're working together, I'm in charge. I'm not interested in using you like those priests want to do, I'm just here to settle a debt. But I won't be able to teach you anything unless you obey. We both know I probably can't overpower you - one tantrum from you and I'm a pile of gristle - but that doesn't matter. You answer to me. Understood?"

She's poking you! She has a point, though, and you don't see a reason to defy her right now. You'd raised your claws instinctively when she raised the stick, but you lower them now in submission. "Yes, ma'am."

"Good. Here's my plan. We train you in polearms, so your top half has something to do while your bottom half is tearing through enemies." She tosses you the stick she was holding. You catch it awkwardly. "Normally I'd start with footwork, but... well, you know."

She takes a stick of her own and leads you through some basic ways to hold your weapon out, attack and counter-attack, adjusted to your increased height. Occasionally she says "I'm taking one of these" and grabs one of the cakes laid out for you. She doesn't give you permission to do the same. She may have a sweet tooth.

It's pretty easy for her to swat at your legs and the base of your claws before you untrained human arms can bring your own weapon to bear. Though it doesn't hurt you, you find yourself backing up until your long tail touches the wall. You never really looked at your tail before. Before you'd looked down at your inhuman anatomy, not backward. Is that the stinger she was talking about? Has it always been that close to your head?

You jerk forward, trying to get away from the menacing stinger, which must be six inches long at least. But the damned thing follows you! It's almost as though it's attached to you. You make a panicked squeak. "Oh, gods..." Nakurtum leaps out of your way as you crash into a wall.

> Roll 4d6 to see how much you fucked up the wall.
> Also, is there a particular god you like to pray to for comfort? Popular options include the Zeus-like air god Enlil, the creator goddess Aruru, and Shamash, god of justice and the more benevolent aspects of the sun. Nobody bothered to teach you the intricacies of religion. Nobody ever bothered to teach you much of anything. But you're pretty sure that there's a goddess who shaped humans out of clay, and her name is Abubu.

"Abubu! I am sorry! HELP ME!"

Perhaps Abubu is listening, because you fall just short of annihilating the wall. Dust from cracked mortar fills the room, and several of the bricks have been knocked out of place, but you don't send the whole wall tumbling down the side of the pyramid.

Nakurtum coughs out some dust and rights herself. "Okay, you're definitely as strong as I thought." That doesn't comfort you at all, though. You remain writhing on the floor, repulsed by a tail that you can't seem to control, like the trouble you were having with your claws last night. You start weeping.

"It'll be all right, Hunzuu, now get up," Nakurtum says, to no avail. She waits a moment. "Get up." Another pause. She raises her voice. "YOU WILL GET UP RIGHT NOW! YOUR MASTER COMMANDS YOU!"

Your tail starts twitching around as your human mind starts to finally connect to it. Nakurtum is smart enough to stay way, way out of its reach.

You sting yourself in the shoulder. You feel some warm liquid go into you. It hurts, but only as much as it would normally hurt to get stuck with a pointy object.

You scream in fear, but eventually you gain full control over your tail. You seem to be immune to your own venom. Good to know.

You stand up again. "I'm sorry for breaking the wall, ma'am. But I don't want you to call yourself my master anymore. You're just a teacher, right?"

Nakurtum picks up the stick you dropped. "You're not a slave, if that's what you think I was implying. You're a student. Some young adventurers fight for that privilege. The ones who can call me master look down on the ones who can't."

The door opens again. It's the Sand Priest, the perpetually shady-looking guy in white. "Is everything quite all right in here, ladies?"

Nakurtum tosses you the stick again. "We're fine. We'd have a lot more room to train if we could do this outside."

"When we are ready! We want our new champion to make the strongest possible first impression on the city, don't we? Also, if you don't mind, may I have a word in private with young Hunzuu?"

>Let him

>>
>>28453016

let him. it is only a brief word, shouldn't detract from out training...

mayhap once we have 'settled' into our new form, we should work on fine manipulation of our scorpion half... see what materials our claws can crush, how deep our stinger can penetrate armor, If we can spin on the spot using our tail (and possibly the pole-arm) to knock down/cut in half enemies who would surround us....

something else to do would be 'endurance training', by carrying heavy weights on our back and running or dodging attacks...
>>
>>28453117
I want to get down lifting things with our claws without utterly destroying them.

We're big enough that if we can't master this, we'll have to bend over a huge amount, or get tongs, to pick things up off the ground with our human part.

"Only if it's not for long, I do need training."

he Sand Priest grins. "I assure you, I don't need long at all. Go get some water, and I'll be finished before you get back."

Nakurtum walks away. The Sand Priest closes the door and creeps into the room. "I hope this has not been going too fast for you, Hunzuu. An ordeal like this would be trying for any young mind. Becoming a monster. Not being able to fit in among humans again. Except perhaps if we work together..."

You eat some of the bread laid out for you as he talks. It's all right, but it doesn't feel as filling as it should.

"Sand magic is not just about sand. It is about mirages, well-crafted lies. I myself have been lying for years to the four fools who think themselves my equals."

The Sand Priest brushes some sand out of his beard. Then the beard disappears. His whole appearance suddenly changes from that of an old man to that of an old woman. "Disguising you as something mundane will take much more work, of course, but it's an experiment I'm willing to undertake. If you're willing to do something for me in return. Does that sound fair to you?"

"Something? Like what?"

"A favor to be named later. Nothing that will cause you harm, but something that will mean as much to me as a normal life means to you."

You want to know what I want? For now, I want you to keep my secret, and not to harm any acolyte wearing white. I want you to keep me informed of any plots that might affect me adversely, and I want you to play along with the Bronze Priest if he tries to introduce you to his oaf of a daughter. But perhaps their temper was a product of their upbringing. Perhaps we here can create the best of both worlds."

She sets some sand in her hair, and her body shimmers and returns to the appearance of a man with a silver-streaked beard. "Do what you feel is right, girl. As much as you will do for me, I will do for you."

Nakurtum arrives with a large clay pot of water. Wood is kind of scarce around here. The dark wooden doors in these interior rooms of the pyramid are impressive luxury items.

"All right, no more delay. Let's get back to practicing those counterattacks, maybe see what it will take to really train your strength."

"Sorry master, but we didn't actually eat anything this morning before you showed up. Not even any of those cakes you were muching on. Want to catch breakfast?"

Nakurtum narrows her eyes and considers your invitation for a moment. "... I approve."

You go back to the banquet room, ducking under every arched doorway, only to find it completely empty. Nakurtum points out that the Great Priests usually take their meals in the solar at the apex of the pyramid. It would be better to check the kitchens, which are closer anyway.

The two of you come across the hunchbacked cook Nergal-Edir in a kitchen bending over a hearth and trying to start a fire. As before, the sight of a large monster does not get much of a reaction out of him. "Oh. Hello again."

"Hello. We were wondering if you had some meat."

You take a strip of cooked goat off of a wicker tray and try it. Maybe it's just the inherent tastiness of meat, which you hardly ever had in your life of poverty, or maybe your monstrous instincts are kicking in, but it's so good it makes you groan in pleasure. You almost forget to chew it before sending it down your gullet. "Mm!" You go right back for more. You experiment with snipping some meat off the bone with a scorpion claw. It sort of works. You're more than strong enough, but the claws are somewhat serrated and don't shear against each other.

Nakurtum laughs and takes a little for herself before you eat it all. Fortunately, meat is not only tastier than the other fare you've had, but also more filling. You feel like you could take or leave the raw meat.

The time has come. Your rip some raw flesh from a side of goat and hold it up. Not wanting to get your human hands bloody, you lean forward and take it directly with your mouth.

It doesn't have that familiar meat texture, but somehow you know it tastes more like a real goat. It's juicy, and it practically melts in your mouth - or maybe it literally does. Is raw meat supposed to be this tender? In any case, you get a bit of a head rush. You don't feel a strong urge to finish the meat, but you feel a noticeable urge to protect it It's yours. Your kill. It's a weird feeling. Thinking about it makes you uncomfortable.

"So, uh, Nakurtum, do you know anything about scorpion-people? Like, from the old stories?"

She shakes her head as she stretches her red arm to keep it from going sore before training is over. "Not really. Just that they all died in the great flood, along with most of the other monsters. But I guess monsters are coming back now. People are finding ruins with some of the old magic in them. Some of them were probably my students!" She says with some pride. "Ready to train again?"

"Sure, I'm ready to go. Let's try going out on the terrace. Who cares if anyone sees us? They already know the priests are up to something."

You say the words, but something holds you back before you can skitter away. Are you just going to leave your kill here? What if someone takes it? You can't carry it on your back while you train, and you dare not stuff the whole thing down your throat now. "Nergal-Edir? Canyou make sure nobody else eats this goat?"

He blinks. "Um... yes. I swear on my word of honor not to let anyone else eat this goat."

He sounds sarcastic, but that's enough to assuage your worry. You thank Nergal-Edir ad follow Nakurtum out to the stair leading out to the sunlight and the open air.

You're maybe 150 feet up, and you're not on the side overlooking the pyramid's courtyard, so the city streets are right below you. While you're looking out at the city, a few people on the nearest street seem to notice you. Laborers point and shout to each other, possibly arguing over what you are. Women scream and run to gather up their children.

> Yell something to them
> Disregard them. Run some laps with Nakurtum now that you have room.

I don't want to shout, because we'd have to shout REALLY REALLY loud.

Yes, that is exactly the sort of thing I am hoping to avoid.

You awkwardly wave at the people, but it doesn't seem to improve their disposition.

Nakurtum sets down the bundle of sticks and the pot of water, then unstraps the bronze discs she'd been wearing as armor. "Let's run around a bit. It's the safest kind of endurance training until we can get you some heavy objects to test with."

As it turns out, you do not automatically outrace the human woman, despite the long reach of your eight legs. You've learned to sort of drift forward, with each leg picking itself up when the right time comes, but making yourself move any faster requires a more conscious effort to keep your legs from bumping into each other and keep your upper half balanced. You feel almost as clumsy as right after your transformation.

It takes time, but you keep at it. Nakurtum paces herself, but you go all-out. You occasionally fall forward onto the front section of your scorpion half, but you quickly right yourself. After maybe a couple of hours, Nakurtum is sweaty and winded, and you've officially figured your legs out. You can even run sideways and backwards.

> You now have a Reflexes score of 1 instead of 0.

Nakurtum tries to act like she hasn't been running for two hours as she breaks for a drink. "Good. Coming along. Next is, uh, added weight training. See if you can go that fast with me on your back."

"Couldn't we use something else? We could get some more jars of water or something."
"You don't get another break. Come on, I want to see how this works."

Your stinger has obeyed you since your freakout this morning, so you see no further objection as she climbs onto your back and holds on tight. Fortunately, she gives up on the idea after only a couple laps around the terrace. Her added weight doesn't affect your mighty scorpion body at all, and you slow down just to keep her from being thrown off.

She slides off your carapace and finds her feet. "That wasn't a great idea. Thank you for obeying, though. Hey, who's that?"

There's a young woman, maybe 14 years old, well-fed, watching you from a stone bench on the terrace, guarded by men in brown robes. It's the Bronze Priest's daughter. If things had gone just a little differently, she'd be the giant scorpion and you'd be back to your normal life.

You skitter over to her as Nakurtum takes the remaining water, drinks deep, then pours the rest over her head.

You bow a little and keep your distance. "Oh! Hello. I didn't notice you were there at first. I remember you from the other day. I'm Hunzuu, nice to meet you."

She stays in her seat and clearly wants to look unmoved, but there is fear in her eyes. Maybe disgust, too. "I am Tabni-Ninsun. Father says you're the savior of the city. But you ran away. I didn't run away. Father says you're not supposed to run, even when you're scared. When Turtak comes for us, will you run again?"

Your top half is only a little stronger than it used to be, you think. For the most part, fighting with your top half and fighting with your bottom half are going to be separate stats. The advantage to cultivating your weaker top half is that you can theoretically fight with both halves at once, swinging a weapon while clawing and stinging people.

>>28455125
You want to try to play along. "Sneak? I don't think I'm very sneaky anymore," you say shyly.

She laughs. "You won't have to be. Usually all I have to do to get out of tutoring is not show up."

Nakurtum has regained her composure, though she's still rather damp. She puts her armor back on. "I think that's all I can handle for today. I'll be around, though. I'm staying on the fourth level. Oh, yeah, and that box left in your room is a cage with a little scorpion. I thought watching a real one catch prey might give you some insight. Might have been a half-baked idea, but it's all I could come up with at the time."

Tabni-Ninsun snaps her fingers. "Boys, you're dismissed." The guards leave her, and she shows you how to get to a room she likes in the basement of the pyramid. It's not near any windows, and it's lit by magic blue torches in the walls. Though Tabni-Ninsun looks normal, the light makes you glow blue all over. "Whoa, look at you! Won't you be a sight to see. If they start ragging on us again. We ARE a powerful and divinely-granted creature, after all. It's all very well to hang onto who we were, but we should also cultivate the ability to be respected and a little feared, as well as loved.

As for if it's truth... I always consider that, if the GM hasn't said otherwise, all aspects of a character (and sometimes scene) are at the player's discretion. If we say we had it especially hard, then why not?

Yep. It's not as strong in your human skin and hair, but it's definitely there.

>>28455520
Yep, the Blood Priest believed that the younger the girl, the bigger and stronger the scorpion she can grow into. Using it on an adult would ether fail or result in a smaller scorpion with no potential for growth. You on the other hand, have the potential to shed your skin and level up at least twice.

>>28455466
"W-wait. Will they be okay with me, like this?"
"They will, because I'll tell them to. I could have any one of them thrown out o here, or bled to death, or turned into a hyrax. They do't forget that."

As you wait for her to return, you decide to name your scorpion Mr. Clicks.

She comes back with a teenaged boy in a red acolyte's robe, a girl of maybe 10 years dressed like a servant, and a boy about your age dressed even more finely than Tabni-Ninsun, with heavy gold jewelry and everything. He's carrying a couple jars of something. She'd clearly told them what to expect, so they hide their fear. The boy in red doesn't look afraid at all, though. "Interesting! The Great Ones do amazing work. This is three or four levels beyond anything I've seen."

The well-dressed boy sets down the jars. "I stole some beer from that halfwitted hunchback. Will you have some?"

> Just a little...
> No thanks. I'd better stay completely in control.
> Don't you dare talk smack about that hunchback or I will slap your shit.
>> Also, I'm gonna break for just a little bit to eat. Forgive future lateness.

I think its a little soon for that, to be honest. Im still surprised that zuu stood up for herself with the amazon, to be honest. Shes just about at the point where she can order servants about. I'd have thought she'd cave before anyone who carries themselves with authority.

Beer brings back bad memories. Your mother was, to put it frankly, a whore, and she was always trying to get beer from the men who used her. Her habit for the stuff affected her decision-making. Once when she was really hammered she got in a fight with a customer and gouged his eye out with her thumb. You never saw her again after that.

"No thank you. Also, are you talking about Nergal-Edir? He's really nice, you know. He'd probably just give it to you."
Tabni-Ninsun rolls her eyes. "Don't mind her attachment to the help. She's common. Or rather, she used to be. Now she's as rare as anything!"

Everybody else drinks, even the ten-year-old. They gossip about the staff and the acolytes, you contribute to the conversation where you can without revealing anything important, Tabni-Ninsun makes out with the well-dressed boy for a bit, and then they decide to hide the rest of the beer for later and go get something to eat. As you prepare to follow them out, though, the ten-year-old girl tugs on the hem of your dress to get your attention. "Hunzuu? Can we talk alone just for a second?"

You don't see a reason not to. You skitter off into an empty hallway. The girl, who's called Ku-Aya, suddenly takes on a more serious look. When she speaks, her voice seems a little deeper, more mature. "I've been here since the Great Priests announced their little plan. They think I'm just an apprentice jeweler, but I represent the king. He wants to be sure you stand for all of Ligish. He also requests that you honor his advisors with your presence when the time is right. Will three days be enough? Somewhere out of the way, like the first ford in the river north of the city walls."

> Of course. The city and its king are one.
> I'll try.
> Get bent. I fight for [myself/my creators/the actual city and not the king nobody respects.]
> Agree, but report her to the Great Priests later.
>>

"They will see you leave the city, and they will see you return, but how many will dare to follow you across open ground? That is what we have reasoned."

>Makes sense.
> I have nothing to hide. I walk straight into the palace, or I don't go anywhere.
> You'll just have to see if I show up, then. I don't know what I'm doing in three days.

>>
>>28456411

Meta Question; what do we know about the king? Do we have an opinion on him? Is he a good king, or a bad king? What about the 'prince' that 'authorized' the priests preforming the ritual?
>>
>>28456411
[x]I'll try- I've never been outside of the city before.
>>
>>28456411
>You'll just have to see if I show up, then. I don't know what I'm doing in three days.

The king is essentially a rubber stamp for the priests. Whether we think that makes him good or bad, or if we even know that IC, remains to be seen.

Honestly, I'm pretty convinced suspecting this is an assassination attempt.
And if they're really only trying to meet us unnoticed, this is so clumsy that I don't really want to throw my lot in with who is behind this anyways.
>>
>>28456682
I am not sure if unnoticed is what they are going for.
Though, an assassination attempt would be interesting/traumatic.
>>
>>28456698
If they don't care about keeping their involvement and just want to make a statement, a visit to the palace would work even better and would be less troublesome and dangerous.
It seems rather likely that there is something else going on and they want us out of the city for it.
Either to ambush us, to goad us into ambushing something else or to have us be absent from the city while shit goes down.
>>
>>28456759
well, that is a strong argument for the palace visit, I have to say.
My only real counterargument is the classic secretly-competent king gambit.

You hear there are bandits outside the walls, maybe scouts from other cities, but nothing you'd really be afraid of. Ku-Aya apparently thinks that people would be afraid to follow you into open ground just because it would attract more attention from you than shadowing you in the street.

>>28456481
You were old enough to remember the last king, a burly man with an enormous beard who would make booming proclamations, sometimes out of high windows without warning. His successor is eighteen years old, skinny, beardless. He only shows up rarely at religious festivals and has heralds do all his public speaking. Your new friends made a lot of jokes about him while they were drinking. Apparently he controls so little of the city's military now that his palace is guarded by men from the Charioteers' School, simply because it's the only one he's sure is loyal to him. Not even the Slingers' School respect him, the well-dressed boy claims, and the slingers are street trash.

>>28456411
"I'll try, then. I'm still not sure if I can."
"I understand. He looks forward to seeing you."

The evening passes uneventfully. True to his word, Nergal-Edir saved the rest of that goat for you. He butchered it and cooked it for you, dressed up with spices. It manages to be good without giving you that little rush of bloodlust that you had before. That's probably for the best. Though you don't finish the whole goat, your urge to protect it has subsided, and you let the staff have the rest of it.

You've just gone back to your room to feed Mr. Clicks when you see something you haven;t seen since your transformation. All five Great Priests have come together to see you. They look upset by something.

The Blood Priest steps forward. "Hunzuu, dear... We may have to send you outside the pyramid earlier than expected. There is another monster."

>> I have to break now. Not sure if I'll be able to get back later tonight. The next time I'm sure I can post is tomorrow at about 7PM EST.

yeah, seems like a big change from the last king, we should check it out.

Assuming, you know, monster things don't interrupt us.
>>
>>28456784

Well, for the priests, this is a 'make or break' gambit. Either the girl who has been half scorpion for little over a day defeats the 'enemy' thusly displaying both fearsome power and making the peoples view of her more positive. Or, she is defeated, appearing weak causing the priests to look foolish for using such a young and unskilled child for the ritual...

There are only two possible replies.

"WHAT?!?!"
and
"Are there no other options?" followed by a strict talking to when we get back about Civil Defence policies, if the best plan the city-state wise men can come up with is "throw the untrained twelve year old girl we turned into a horiffic scorpion monstrosity not twenty-four hours ago at it, while she still literally can't find her arse with both hands, 2 claws and a map."
>>
>>28456904
I'm betting this one of the priests doing. When Zuu got turned into Scorpion, someone else's plan got fucked up, and this is their "backup plan" for if we don't work out. Which has now gone awry and is threatening the city.

The timing seems unlikely, otherwise.

Doubtful that 'concealment magic' will remove the rather large scorpion lower half.... make it invisible, maybe, remove it from existence? unlikely...
