-LAST TIME IN SALEM-
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/28405701/

You, Natalia Jean-Louis, a young american witch of afro-caribbean descent have started your first year at the Salem Institute for Witches and Wizards. Your first few of school went much differently than you expected. Between you losing all your hair due to a classmate's indiscretion, finding out a fellow Housemate passed away under mysterious circumstances, and getting a letter from your parents with a strange postscript (apparently redacted by The Society). Fortunately, you’ve made a few friends, including Todd and Angela, Eel Housemates also in the first year. There's also Allen, the older Eel House member that seems to know a lot about smithing and lots of other stuff. You've hung out with him a few times, it's not a big deal...I mean... he IS pretty cute... ANYWAY So you met a few cool people. Angela, Todd, and yourself tried unsuccessfully to break into Starfish House to investigate your Housemate’s death. Afterwards you headed back to Eel House to check the student’s room. Todd stumbled upon Allen, who got very upset with him, and Todd claimed Allen tried to hit him. You don't really know what to think about that. A bit of time passed without incident and you finally felt your life starting to settle in to this school until Allen dropped you a mysterious note at breakfast time one morning.

Keep updated here: twitter.com/Salem_Institute

This quest uses a ROLL-UNDER system. I'll usually take the best of the first 3 1d100 rolls that are linked to my post. Critical fails are 98-100, Critical successes are 1-5 and take precedence.

There is an -ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED- Fate point system in which for every THREE achievements Natalia unlocks, you get ONE Fate Token which can reroll ONE die-roll. If someone expresses a wish to use a token, I’ll call for a y/n vote on whether to use one based on consensus.

Current Fate Tokens: 1
Achievements Needed to next Token: 1

Natalia,

I think I found out what happened to Oliver. You were right, there is something suspicious going on. Meet me in the clearing just north of the Herbology fields after dinner tonight.

I can explain everything, but you must come alone. You’re the only one I think I can trust right now.

Sincerely and without Haste,
Allen

Your dark eyes scan over the page once more, hardly believing this to be real. Allen trusts you enough to tell you a secret. AND he wants to meet you in private. As your face flushes you can feel your heart quickening its pace. Speaking of which your head feels a bit warm as is.=

You sneeze, startled.
“Bless you!” says Todd from down the table.

Angela watches from the opposite side of the table expectantly. “So? What does it say?”

“Allen thinks he knows what happened to Oliver.” You say, lowering your voice so only the two of you can hear.

Angela’s eyes widen and she stops chewing her chocolate muffin. “Really?!” She half shouts.

“Hush!” you quickly say, attempting to control her volume vicariously. “He wants me to meet him alone in the that clearing by the Herbology gardens tonight.”

“How mysterious,” Angela remarks, “I wonder what he could hav’ found out. Promise to tell me everything he says. So suspenseful.”

“Umm of course!” You say in your best ‘no duh’ voice. It would be unfair to leave Angela out in the dark about this and you would be lying if you said you didn’t want to talk about it with someone.

“You know, I was just thinkin’ ‘bout how we would probably never find out what happened to him. Looks like the game is still on.” She flashes you a bold grin. “What ‘cha think it is? Ghosts? Monsters?”

The two of you swap theories back and forth for a little bit, causing more laughter than actual introspection. Angela seems pleased though. As the two of you finish up breakfast you realize you have some time before your disaster of a class Herbology.

You feel a bit hollow at the idea of not including your third musketeer in on this development, even if he had been very cold to the two of you recently. Maybe if you reached out to him more, let him know that this was going on, he’d understand why you were quick to be understanding of Allen. It’s just so obviously a misunderstanding, and you needed to show him that.

When you approach him at the other end of the tables you see that he is talking with (well more like listening to) Samir, the Octopus House boy. From what you could gather Samir was telling him about something to do with learning guitar. Todd actually seems mildly interested but concedes as you walk up that he is ‘a bit too uncoordinated’ for that.

He looks up at you when he notices your presence. “Oh, hey. How’s it going?”

There seems to be an air of hesitance in his voice, but other than that he seems genuinely glad to see you.

>Hey can I talk to you for a bit in private? (Tell him about the letter)
>Nothing much, how about you?

“Hey can I talk to you real quick?” You begin, but then lean in closer. “You know, in private?”

Todd raises an eyebrow as he thinks about this for a moment. Suddenly you ask yourself if he is actually going to say anything or not but Todd turns to Samir and excuses himself. You lead him to the stairwell on the west side of the building for some privacy.

Once you are sure you are alone you begin to tell him about the note, carefully studying his facial expressions as you do so. He doesn’t say anything as you explain, but his forehead furrows with thought.

“He says he can explain everything that has happened.” You begin to finish up. “I just have to meet him alone tonight. He doesn’t want to risk anything.”

“That’s not a good idea.” He finally says once he’s heard everything from you. “He attacks me in his room. Then behaves strangely for weeks and then suddenly he’s all rubbing elbows and wanting to tell you secrets?”
>You don’t know him like I do.
>I understand that you’re concerned but…
>Well...I guess you do have a point.

I understand you’re concerned.” You begin, not wanting him to feel like you are siding against him. “But he really has little reason to hurt me. I’m just a first year, I’m not exactly a threat. I also haven’t been hounding him for information and he is the one who came to me, not the otherway around.”

You feel a tickling at the back of your nose and let out a loud sneeze. Your sinuses begin to feel swollen as you feel a sharp pain in the front of your head. Todd mutters out another ‘bless you’ and quickly puts a hand to your forehead.

“Wait, are you running a fever?”

>Naw, I’m fine.

Todd cross his arms uneasily at this. “Look. I can’t force you not to go. But as your friend, I’m saying that there is something fishy about this. Not to mention it’s not wise to be running around when you are clearly coming down with something. Just think about it okay?”

“I’ll be careful.” You assure him but he doesn’t look any less concerned about what is going on.

“If you say so,” He sighs. “Come on, we’re going to be late for Herbology.”

>Okay, let’s go find Angela.

“Go on without me,” You tell him. “You’re right, I’m feeling a bit sick. I should go see the nurse.”

He seems happy with this and says that he’ll see you in charms before leaving you to go to class. You walk up the stairs and enter the nurses’ office to find the nurse reading calmly in a chair by his desk. He looks up at you through his slightly magnified glasses.

“Oh, do you need something?” He asks closing the slender book.

“Yeah I’m feeling a bit sick.” You say, hoping that with a quick flick of a wand you’ll be out of there.

“Ah, yes something does seem to be going around.” He gestures to one of the cots in the wing and you take a seat.

He presses his hands to the sides of your throat, right underneath your chin, gently as he searches for something. He mutters ‘lumos’ and asks you to open your mouth, which you obliged.

After some investigation he mutters ‘nox’ to shut the light off and says with confident certainty, “Yes, a cold. Clearly not serious, but it just needs to run it’s course.”

“Can’t you just use magic?” You sniff your nose audibly and he hands you a box of tissues without missing a beat.

“It’s important to build a healthy immune system. So no waving of the wands and ‘poof’! But,” He says as he opens a nearby drawer. “I can give you a something to give you a little boost. So you can be back to your normal self in the morning or so.”

He produces a small vial of purplish liquid and gives it to you. You down it in one swig but feel your face cringe up. It tastes sickenly sweet with the undertones of something bitter.

“In the mean time feel free to take a quick nap. I’ll wake you up when the next classes are about to start.”

You thank him and lay down on the cot, pulling the knitted blanket up to your chin.

As you sleep you find yourself in the forest, but the ground is covered in water like it had become flooded from a storm. The light is dim, a strange blue hue illuminates the world around you. A large black eel swims through the air at eye level but quickly disappears into the thick grove of trees.

You’re looking for something. Or someone. You aren’t sure but your legs are compelled to move forward, the sounds of your feet sloshing through the water is the only audible sound. You round the elm and oak trees until you see something ahead of you in the distance.

A figure in white.

You follow it and soon see that it is no other than your mother. Her long white dress seems to hover above the water, her head covered in long white lace. She is not what you are looking for though. Her dark eyes lock with yours as she slowly raises her left arm, pointing west.
In a sudden flash you are by a rocky sea side, the salty air whips through your hair. It’s here. You just can’t see it.

“Natalia.” A voice so familiar says to you, but who did it belong to?

“Natalia, it’s time to wake up now.” Your eyes flash awake to see the nurse towering over you. “Your next class is starting soon. How are you feeling?”

You do feel a little less congested, but nothing much else. Unfortunate, but maybe the potion needs more time. You thank the nurse and leave for Charms. The class is focused on creating a significantly less powerful ‘incendio’ charm by lighting a candle with the spell. Though you fair well you find your mind wandering back to the dream you had in the medical ward.

In transfiguration you can hardly concentrate on turning your mug into a cigar box. What on earth could your mother be trying to tell you? This question continues to plague you through lunch as Angela chats to you madly about Sky Rays and how she saw one just this morning while heading to Charms class.

And finally, in history you learn about the final chapters of Tituba and Anne’s life. Mr. Gonzales started the class by pointing to the large portrait of the two, the only painting that is still. He goes on to explain that Tituba did not die, but in fact ascended into a higher plane of existence thus becoming pure magic. Anne would do the same only a few years later.

You study the painting as he says this and you notice the wild-looking sea behind the two of them. A feeling of suspense and longing passes over you with no logical reason to it.

At dinner you are starting to feel a bit under the weather again.

“Hey? Everything okay?” Angela asks as she helps herself to a large steaming pile of macaroni and cheese.

When you finish the dream she still seems highly interested, asking you details about your surroundings in it.
“Do you think it was really my Mom though?” You ask her after she’s done with questions.

“Too soon to tell if you ask me.” She shrugs. “Potions can give weird dreams sometimes, but I think you ought to write that down or something. At least think about it for the next few days. If anything turns up then you know.”

You suppose she could be right, but before you can make any more assumptions about the dream you notice that Allen is already gone.

As you walk into the chilly fall evening air you can already feel your grogginess taking hold. Part of you wants to turn back and be in the comfort of your dorm but you know you can’t disappoint Allen like that.

You make your way past the Herbology garden's, blowing your nose in some spare tissues as you go along. Making it to the forest’s edge you begin your search for the clearing. It seems fruitless at first, simply wandering around and around in the forest aimlessly. Then you come to a thick grove of trees and you can see something about 15 feet away in the clearing.

A figure stands in the field, shaded slightly by the waning sun’s shadows on the trees. They are hunched over, as if having stomach pains. Moving as silently as you can you get closer to see who this person is. Their back is still turned to you but you can make out a glimpse of blond hair.

Allen, of course. At first you thinking about approaching him like you had planned but something holds you back and soon it proves to be a good idea because you notice a smaller figure to the right, standing in complete shadow. Allen notices and turns to face them, giving you a profile image of him.

They’re talking, arguing about something. You can’t make out what it is they are saying to each other but you can tell the hostility by their body language. Allen looks pale, and you notice how frail his body suddenly looks. He stops talking and straightens himself.

In one smooth movement Allen reaches up to the edge of his face. An index finger and a middle reaches up to his chin but then seems to go inward too far. Then, slowly, begins to wedge itself upward like a trap door to some horrific place. Something dark flows from underneath it, but it’s not blood like you would expect. It’s something solid and long, rope-like even.

They dangle as Allen lifts up more of his face off his head, exposing more of the dark horror beneath.

Then, so fast that a blink could miss it, the dark tendrils shoot out at the person across from Allen.

Your vision starts to blur and you stagger back, trying to run away. Yet, nothing is chasing you. Color drains from your view and you can feel ice cold sweat run down your face as you fall into darkness.

You slowly awake to see both the nurse and the headmistress standing over you with a bright light shining above. It doesn’t take long to realize you are back in the nurse’s office, complete with him holding a petri dish full of a glittering blue powder under your nose. It smells strong with a piney-lemon scent.

“Now there she is.” The nurse smiles and gently brushes a lock of hair out of your face. “We were all very worried about you.”

Behind the two of them are tightly drawn white curtains, keeping you segregated from the rest of the ward. Your mind feels fuzzy, as if the images from last night never happened.

“We clearly have many questions for you.” Theliza calmly states as she stands by your bedside. “However, I think it can wait. You’re friend is very concerned about you and I think it would put us all at ease to let her see you.”

She throws her arms around you in hysterics, pulling you closer than anyone has ever held you outside of your family.

You finally pull yourself away from her so you can finally speak.

“What is it?”

“I-I-I told him NOT to go! I told him!”

“You’re not making any sense.”

“It’s Todd!” She exclaims through a thick veil of tears. “He saw you leavin’ after dinner and said he had ta go after you.”

You feel the color drain from your face as you recall a short figure in the forest. Your stomach twists up. No. Not Todd.

“I told him no. That was your business. But-but he wouldn’t listen to me.” She sniffed loudly.

“Please tell me that you’ve seen him.” The question is unfortunately rhetorical because you already know in your gut what she’s going to say.

“He never came back, Natalia.”
