You are Christopher Phillips, previously just another teenage nerd living in a small English town, and a lot of things have changed in your life since you died.

Of course, you’re not the only person who’s died recently. It doesn’t seem to have changed things all that much for the latest dead girl, though. Annabelle Lowe, or Anne to her friends, has apparently been happily going about her life for the past few days, completely oblivious to her new state of mortality. It’s odd that people keep ignoring her and her co-workers wouldn’t talk to her or look at her, but they’re probably upset about something. She does rather wish she could remember what happened on Sunday evening, though. It’s all a bit blurry.

You know exactly what happened four days ago, having heard the other side of the story from Annabelle’s murderer, the vampire Cassandra. Breaking the news to Anne needs to be done in a delicate fashion, though, if you hope to extract a useful ghostly minion from all this. Or a friend. Not everything is about power and control, after all.

‘Yeah, keep telling yourself that, kid. She’ll make a good spy, and she shouldn’t be too much trouble to claim. You’re expanding your power base well. We’ll be ready to start working on a wider scale soon, reminding everyone what power and control really look like.’

Well, that’s... interesting. And also something you'll have to worry about later.

You get up from your seat and walk to the front of the class. Miss White, your History teacher, is mostly letting the students do their own thing as long as it’s vaguely revision-related, so it’s not too suspicious when you ask her if you can get a bit of private revision advice, and she guides you through into her office, quietly locking the door behind her.

In addition to being your History teacher, Miranda White is your best friend’s aunt, a half-Fae with various interesting connections in the Court of Spring, an empathy and telekinetic, and a very beautiful woman. She’s absorbed a lot of the Fae views on sex and relationships, which makes her a very fun person to be friends with.

“I know you don’t need any advice on History, Chris,” she says with a playful grin, “you helped me write the revision guide. So I’m guessing you wanted something a little more fun, yeah?”

[]Well, there are things you need to talk to her about, but you’ve got the whole lesson, really. Talking can wait.
[]A very tempting offer, but it can wait a little while. You need to sort out this business with Anne first.
[]Aren’t there a whole class of students on the other side of that door? Maybe you should tell Miranda to dial it back a little.

Tempting, but we have business. Tell her that the social worker on Jill's case is currently deceased and that progress on that front may be stalled. We don't actually know what's become of Jill's case-file among the living- whether we'll be meeting another social worker, or we've fallen through the cracks. Then ask her about her take on the latest escapade with Jill's mother, about moving Jill in with her, and finally about her thoughts on breaking the bad news to miss ghostly.

Also, good to see you back, boss.

"As fun as our little sessions are, I do actually have things to talk to you about. You know Jill had a social worker assigned to her, right?"

"Yes, she mentioned. A lady called Anne. Sounds nice enough. Is there a problem with her?"

"You could say that, yeah. She's dead. And still walking around."

"She's... like you? That's interesting. What could have caused that?"

"Not like me. A ghost, I think. She got drained to death by a vampire I know, and she's missing, presumed dead by everyone. She doesn't seem to have realised, though. She doesn't know why her co-workers won't talk to her and her friends haven't called."

"Oh, I see. Yes, that could be tricky. If she's publicly dead, what happens to Jill's case?"

"No idea. We might have fallen through the cracks, or we might have another social worker to deal with soon. If we do get a new one, what do I tell them? Jill needs somewhere to live with her mother gone."

"Have you asked her what she wants? I'd be happy to have her stay with me, but she might want a little space for now. I'll talk to her about it later, anyway. If we do get another social worker, well, Margaret White is officially committed now. Paranoid schizophrenia and auditory hallucinations - she started ranting about how God spoke to her while I was getting the paperwork signed, which sped things up nicely. Legally, Jill can probably live on her own. She's 16, responsible and capable, and there's no mortgage to pay on her house. There'll be a lot of paperwork to fill in, though. As for the current social worker, or ex-social worker, I assume you're planning to break the news to her gently?"

"I'm getting people together for a meeting after school. It'd be nice to have you there, as a responsible adult and all."

Miranda chuckles quietly. "Responsible adult? I guess I am, at that. What a thought. Anyway, I'll certainly be there. Now, you need to go back out and talk to Jill, yes? Or did you have something else in mind?" She grins wickedly.

The Hunger

Ending
Short Rest for the Wicked
Satiety

Cold is used for shutting people down and keeping your own cool, and thanks to Disaffected it also applies to your seduction. Hot is used for manipulating people into doing what you want, without magic. It's usually also used for seduction. Volatile is your fighting and running away stat. I've also used it for foot chases, since running away and running towards are pretty similar. Dark is what you use when you meditate and look for visions. It's also used for various magic things, although not the Man's tricks (which run on an entirely different RPG system, let alone a different stat.).

Moves: Disaffected and The Hunger are factored into your abilities already. Ending lets you remember how you died, and means that when you tell people about it they find it morbidly fascinating. Satiety gives you substantial boosts from sating your various hungers, generally bonus xp. Short Rest for the Wicked means you will (usually) get back up again a few hours after you're 'killed'.

>Satiety gives you substantial boosts from sating your various hungers, generally bonus xp
As I recall, it also tended to make the hungers stronger and much harder to control or ignore.
At least, that's what I remember happening after we got Satiety and started using it.
It became much more difficult to not only ignore or control our Hungers, but they came more often and satieting them only made them come back harder.
And we can't bank our satiation, or stock up, as it were. The Hungers come when they come, and we have to sate them or we become unable to function.

"Well, I don't have to go back to class straight away, do I?" You grin right back at her, loosening your tie a little. "Come here. Just try to be quiet."

Miranda smiles, leaning across her desk and starting to undo her blouse. "Oh, don't worry, I know how to be discreet. We'd never have got this far if I didn't."

"You know, as the responsible adult here, should you really be taking advantage of one of your students?"

"Oh, certainly not. But you can come take advantage of me, can't you?" She sprawls across the desk, hiking up her skirt as you move between her legs and unzip your trousers. "Mmm, right there. It's been far too long..."

***

It certainly has been far too long. You feel much less stressed, less tired, less anxious now. You're brimming with energy. You may have lost track of time a little at some point - you think that class might be nearly over - but you're not sure you care right now. You'd almost forgotten how good it felt to have raw, undifferentiated power coursing through your blood.

You stand, slipping your clothes back on with some care - in your current state, you're a little worried about accidentally ripping some of your shirt buttons off, which might look cool and dashing but would also look rather suspicious. You need to protect your power base, make sure your minions are strong and useful to you, after all. There's a smile on your face as you leave the office and finally return to your seat, though. Jill gives you a sideways glance, but doesn't comment.

That's fine, though. She understand that taking what you want is in your nature, after all. And if she doesn't understand, it wouldn't be too hard to persuade her to start seeing things your way. It'd be for her own good.

... Okay. Hold on. Running this much raw magical energy through your brain is... making it a little difficult to think clearly. You need to ground it, give it a shape you can control. There must be some purpose you can bend it to. But what?

well, as i said earlier i was leaning towards fae magic to have an alternate power source to rely on but i think i'll choose this since i find it more interesting.

Also, found the thing about Hungers not being restricted to linear growth.
Thread 32:
>
Your Hungers don't function on a simple linear scale, there's no 'go x days without feeding, become x% hungrier'. To a certain degree they function off narrative necessity - if it suits the scene for your Hungers to be distractingly strong, they are - but there's also other influences, which you may or may not be able to discern.

We could get something like that i'd guess, but not any time soon. it's just too pwerful for chris as of now and not all that useful, we like to control and manipulate more than kill. actually, we dont even like to kill, and only do it if we are forced to it.
>>
>>28403607
>Would boosting our personal magic let us do the "DIE!" trick the Man used on that demon? That seems like a handy thing to have up our sleeves.
Why would it? It's legit reality warping and requires power that exceeds the fairy king's.
>>
>>28403607
((Potentially, sure. Practising carefully before skipping straight to using it in combat is probably a good plan.

They may require rolls as appropriate depending on what you're doing with them, if it's something Chris might struggle to control or power, but for the most part, this sort of magic just happens. None of your usual enemies will have any way of blocking or dodging, and the ones who do... well, I believe you were told to 'run as fast and as far as you can'.

>>28403632
Yeah... basically, Satiety doesn't mechanically increase your hungers, but it means they're more important and therefore carry more narrative weight and will be featured in the story more often than otherwise. That's not a mechanical effect, it's just good dramatic writing.))

You try to calm yourself, focusing on control. You have all this power at your fingertips, you might as well use it for something. You recall what the Man in the White Suit told you, about how you could improve your own powers, make use of some of his tricks. You need practise. You need time. But most of all you need power. And here you just so happen to have a whole lot of power to play with.

You feel the energy twisting as you impress your will upon it, coiling into shapes of incredible complexity. You reach out, towards your connection to your 'partner', and then suddenly into him, through him. There's something else here, something you struggle to understand. You can almost see in your mind's eye the suggestion of something even more complex, some great primal power that you're only touching a fraction of a piece of. For a moment, you reach out, and feel a spark...

You're back in your chair. The feeling of raw magic is gone. The strange floating sensation of touching some majestic being is gone. The hair on your arms is standing on end. Your throat feels a little sore - you cough, and there's a little ripple of magic along your throat. With a bit of focus and a bit of practice, you might be able to do more with that. At the moment, all you've done is cause everyone else in the class to cough in unison. A few people look round in confusion, then shrug and go back to their work. They'll have forgotten it quickly enough.

You head off to Chemistry, mulling over your new potential. After what happened last time, practising magic in class is probably a bad idea. You can keep this under control enough not to use it accidentally, now that you can feel it, but you don't know your limits yet. Assuming you still have any. Whatever it was that you touched, it felt like it was limitless.

Who do you want to sit and talk to in Chemistry?

You give Jill and Avril a hug and a quick peck as you settle into the seat between them.

"How are my favourite girls? Good? Right. Something a little odd has come up. The social worker, Anne, aka Annabelle? Have either of you been looking at the local news?"

Jill slowly shakes her head, looking puzzled. Avril just shrugs.

"Okay. She's dead. Not walking around dead like me, dead dead. I'm pretty sure she's a ghost."

Jill and Avril both look extremely confused. Jill is the first to speak.

"How can she be a ghost? I mean, we saw her, we talked to her, we shook hands with her. How can -"

Avril butts in suddenly. "Hold on. You didn't know? Neither of you noticed at all?"

"Wait, you knew she was dead?"

"Of course. I thought you knew too. I just figured we weren't mentioning it to her because it'd be rude, like how we don't bring up you being dead."

Jill still looks confused. "If she's a ghost, how did I shake her hand?"

"Well, I tried to shake her hand, and it didn't work. So I asked her if she promised to do everything she could to help Jill with her case, and when she said yes, I gave her a quick tactile glamour. It makes her look less creepily translucent, and it means that if you can see magic in the first place, you can shake her hand and stuff."

"I... see. Avril, is that glamour going to mean everyone can see and touch her?"

"Well, not everyone. If you can't see her anyway, you can't see the glamour, which means you can't 'feel' it. But everyone like us, sure. Anyone who's clued in to magical things."

"Why did you figure we knew, anyway?"

Avril shrugs again. "You're dead, she's dead, can't you guys just sort of tell? I can always tell Fae stuff. And Jill, didn't you notice that she was cold?"

"Well, yeah, but Chris' hands are always cold too. I'm used to it."

Avril just stares for a moment, and Jill blushes. "Oh. Right, of course. So, uh, what do we do about it, then? What are you going to do to her? Can we help her move on somewhere?"
>>
>>28405626
Or maybe help her properly THANK Casandra?
>>
>>28405626
"Well she doesn't know she's a ghost. So obviously the first thing to do is tell her. I've asked her to meet us later, ostensibly to update her about your situation, Jill, but mostly I want to break the news to her gently. I don't know how she'll take, and I figure the three of us can deal with any histrionics better than I alone can. Four, actually- I asked your Aunt to come too, since we really should talk about what's going on with you. And I'd like Isabella to be be there, if you guys don't mind. The more dead people in the room the more comfortable I expect Anne to be, but maybe that's an unreasonable assumption. As for what happens after, who knows. If she *wants* to pass on we'll see what can be done, but maybe she'll want to stick around? I did.

Anyway, that aside, I don't know if you've heard yet, Jill, but Miranda says your mother has been officially committed, which makes you a free woman. What you do with that is up to you- your aunt said she'd be fine with you staying with her, but apparently you can stay at your house on your own if you want to. I understand there'll be some fairly involved paperwork, but it's sounds doable. Of course, with your current social worker dead, I don't know what's happened to your case file. We may be seeing someone new, or maybe not. I'm hesitant to call and ask in case we *have* slipped through the cracks, but I guess it's your choice."

And then give her a squeeze.
>>
>>28405626
Oh god dammit Avril...
"Let's keep her around for the moment, and see what she wants to do. We still need to tell her that she's dead. Avril may think it's obvious, but apparently not to her. We're going to meet her later so I can break the news."

I've asked her to meet us later, so we can tell her about what's happened with Jill's mother, and we can break the news there. I figure the more supernatural people we can gather up for that, the better we can deal with it. I asked Miranda to come, since we do actually need to talk about what's happening with Jill now, and if you don't mind, I'd like to bring Isabella. The more dead people the better, right? After that, well, we'll see what she wants to do."

"One other thing, Jill. Miranda says your mother has been officially committed now. She's locked up somewhere she can't hurt you or anyone else, and you're free. Your aunt said she'd be fine with you staying with her, if you want a bit more company. Or you can stay at your house if you want to - there'll probably be some paperwork, but we can all pitch in. I'm not sure who we'd get the paperwork from, though. If I call and ask about it, I might just remind them you exist and get the great fiery eye of bureaucratic attention upon you again."

Jill chuckles at that. "Okay, Chris. We'll wait and see. I don't mind staying in the house on my own for a few days, at least. I'll have a think about things over the weekend." She pauses, and then grins. "I guess this means my new dress is going to be safe, at least."

"Oooooh, I'd almost forgotten!" Avril is positively beaming now. "We need to go pick that up this evening. It's going to look so great. We'll sort this meeting out first - Chris, it sounds like you have all that stuff in hand, just do whatever you think is best, okay? - and then it's dress fitting time."

For once, you don't find Esther in the library. Perhaps with Ajani still recovering, there's no-one to schedule new meetings for the hunter group, or maybe this just isn't a typical meeting day. You don't know much about their schedules. Either way, the library is quiet and empty. The small room back in the stacks where you met them - only two days ago? It seems much longer, somehow - is locked and dark. There's not even anyone hanging around doing last minute revision, or kissing in the stacks. Everyone's just waiting for Friday night, and the start of the summer holidays.

You find Esther in the dining hall, in the end, at a table on her own. She's neatly cutting a massive, rare steak into small chunks. It looks like very neat and fastidious eating, until you look closer and notice that each chunk gets swallowed whole, no chewing or even biting. Something in your hindbrain shudders reflexively, but you tamp it down and slide into the seat opposite her, giving a polite nod before turning to your own food.

Esther finishes her steak fairly quickly - you're not sure if she finished her other food first, or if a steak so rare it was virtually raw was her whole lunch - and waits quietly for you to finish eating before she carefully clears her throat.

"Ajani and Gloria are recovering adequately, with a combination of high-grade medical treatment and minor alchemy, and will be sufficiently well to attend the dance tomorrow evening and in fighting form by Saturday evening. James has indicated he is unlikely to attend. Louie has acquired a tuxedo, and with some assistance from myself he may be able to tie a passable bow tie by tomorrow night. Nothing more has been heard from any of the Corrupter's agents, and we believe the rest of its network has now been, ah, 'rolled up'. Was that all the information you needed at this point?"

You pause, blinking for a second. "Uh. That's all very good to hear. Do you know about ghosts, by any chance?"

((Cont.))

She gives you a thin, satisfied smile. “I know a great many things about ghosts. Is there any particular facet of information you are seeking? Binding, banishing, exorcising, fettering, raising, summoning? Or do you wish information about some specific ghost?”

“Um... none of the above, I think. There’s a new ghost I thought you should know about.”

Esther carefully raises an eyebrow. “You are bringing information to me? Splendid. Is this a new ghost absolutely, or one that has come from another area?”

“Absolutely new. One of the missing people we were looking into on Tuesday, the woman. Annabelle Lowe.”

“Ah, I see.” A brief expression of regret flashes across Esther’s face, and then it returns to its usual calm. “At least one of them is beyond saving, then; however, she may well be a useful source of information regarding her killer.”

“She doesn’t remember much of her death, unfortunately. That whole period is blurry.”

Esther nods. “A common reaction to the trauma of death. It will clear up with time. Hopefully, soon enough for us to prevent further loss. Is she haunting the area of her death? That might provide us with information for forensic analysis.”

“I don’t think so. She was on the school grounds earlier, but I’ve seen her wandering about. She doesn’t seem to realise she’s dead yet. Do you have any information on how to tell someone that they’ve died?”

There’s a brief pause. “That is... outside my usual areas of specialisation. I have some notes on human grieving rituals and counselling practices, but I have not committed them to memory. When do you wish the information by?”

“I was actually going to tell her later today, so if you don’t have anything right now, that’s fine, don’t trouble yourself.”

Esther nods slowly. “I see. My apologies that I could not be more helpful, then. Were there any other matters you wished to inquire regarding?”

>“No, thank you, Esther. Give my regards to the others my best for their recovery. I'll see them at the dance...after that fun is done, we can figure out the move against the Winter King,"
>>
>>28407820
"No, I believe that is all, Esther. Thank you. Please give my regards to Ajani and Gloria for their recovery."
>>
>>28407820
"I don't think so, or not yet at any rate. I'll almost certainly want to know something eventually. I take it the tux means Louie's going to the dance with Masami? I hope they have a good time if so. And, hold on- Are Ajani and Gloria going to the dance *together*? James is going to pitch a fit."

"That's all for the moment, thank you. Give my regards to Ajani and Gloria for their swift recovery. I'll see them at the dance... um. Wait, are Ajani and Gloria going to the dance together?"

Esther shrugs. "They are attending at the same time. I am unaware if they have any relationship beyond their sexual one."

"Beyond their... okay, never mind. I'll see you later, Esther. Have a nice day."

You breeze through R.E. fairly easily - a couple of people you know you've seen earlier in the day haven't even bothered to show up, and you suspect tomorrow will be worse for that. Isabella and Masami are both there, though, and you give Isabella a brief update on the situation, telling her about the planned meeting later. She has no idea where Cassandra likes to stash bodies, unfortunately - she went to quite a bit of trouble to ensure there weren't any during the time Cassandra was her minion. She's not aware of any previous ghosts, either.

When you get a chance to talk to Masami, she's happily looking forward to the dance. She'd love to watch anime another time - particularly if you want to bring your 'lovely friends' again. She hasn't had a chance to talk to Louie since Friday, but she's texted him a few times, and he's picking her up tomorrow night. Unless you want to come and pick both of them up? You let her know that you have other plans, and she shrugs. Some other time, perhaps.

Before you know it, it's time for the meeting you're now almost dreading. Miranda gathers everyone together, sorts out a large table in the History classroom, and holds down the fort while you locate Anne, apparently still hanging around outside, and invite her for a quick chat.

Anne is a little startled to see such a crowd waiting for her, and laughs nevously.

"It almost looks like an intervention or something. I don't drink that much, I promise." She laughs again, sounding even more forced and nervous this time.

"This isn't about drinking, Anne. It's about death."

((Good night, everyone. I'll see you again next Tuesday at around the usual time. Questions, comments, baseless speculation and shadowruns all go below. You really, really ought to have enough clues to identify the Man in the White Suit now, at least by general type of being. Also, thank you all for playing.))
>>
>>28408610
Thanks for running.

We have all the shadowruns we need to distract us from your seeded clues.
>>
>>28408610
Good run, boss. See you next week.
>>
>>28408610
Lurker here, thanks for running OP.

So, that other thing we touched when we got the magic upgrade: what the hell is it? The Man in White's power source? His boss? Maybe we can go over his head if he tries to fuck with us again.
>>
>>28408578
Hmm. Things are going good. Long awaited dance is almost here.

We should definitely use Ending before we break the news to Anne by the way.

even the man was surprised there, guess he never had a host who draw power out of his control. >>28404724
This is good.

(( Yes. ))

At this point it seems the playerbase is adamantly refusing to acknowledge their breakthrough just to fuck with you.

Do share it please. I cant think of him being anything that isnt already mentioned.

So, are you actually going to share it with us or what?

Personally he just keeps reminding me of someone's inner hollow. Like In bleach. ( ernagherd weeaboo)

I have no idea, either, but I don't know that many settings.

In Nomine, maybe? Are there neutrals to the Angel/Demon conflict in In Nomine?
>>
>>28419113
My money is on something WoD, just for parallelism of themes.

Actually, fuck. Anyone know anything about Geist? You get some kind of entity riding around in your head when you come back from the dead, right?

>“If you meet a woman with the falling stars in her eyes, run. Run as fast and as far as you can. Run before she can speak a single word. You must run before she can speak.”

This makes me think of Sidereals and I suppose you could call Malfeas hell, but the rest doesn't fit
>>
there are two big clues i see in visions.
-“I saw a great plain on which two armies had fought. A man in full armour walked among the debris of the battle, holding a sword in one hand and a crown in the other. When he reached the centre of the battlefield, he found a great stone table, wider than he was tall, across which the bodies of the kings of the armies had fallen. He laid the crown on the table, took his sword, and sliced the crown in two. As the two halves of the crown rolled apart, they caught fire, burned, blackened, and turned to ash.
-the woman with faliing stars in her eyes.

but cant tie them to anything.

This wiki http://wiki.white-wolf.com/worldofdarkness/index.php?title=Geist
says that the human has to accept a bargain, we didn't do that
>>
>>28419271
we were kinda dead so it might be justified we are just not aware that we did.
>>
>>28419403
We should be able to tell a person's exact age if we were a Bound
>>
>>28419271
>>28420516
Also, Sin Eaters aren't cold and dead, they're vibrantly alive.

What else do we have? The woman with falling stars in her eyes, the vervain gorse hollyhock thing, the weird being we saw earlier in this thread?
>>
>>28420675
I'm pretty sure the "crown" vision is also related to us
>>
>>28420731
The third one was explicitly a vision of us 'dressed in white', so it's definitely relevant too.
