You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After helping some people out and stopping for some cinnamon buns, Luciana led you and the Princess to a clothing store... where she'd just asked for your thoughts on a rather provocative dress.

>Congratuations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

"...yeah, I'd have to agree with Marie on that," you say. "The white one is better."
"Aww..." Luciana pouts. "And here I thought that we'd get a chance to show off her curves... not that she really has much in that area," she says teasingly.
"Wait, that's supposed to be for..."
"Oh well, maybe some other time," she says as she goes to put the dress back.

"Since I warned her about harassing you too badly, it looks like she's turned her sights back on me," Marianne sighs.
"Uh, sorry about that," you reply, feeling a bit guilty.
"Don't worry, I'm used to it. It just gets exhausting after a while, that's all."

With that, Marianne goes over to where Luciana is... it seems like they're wrapping this part of your city excursion up.

Actually the opposite he would need to expand it.
VN can take anywhere from 8 hours to 60.
>>
>>28385441
He'd probably do the same for scenes. It's not as big of a problem in a quest thread, but there are waaaaay too many choices and pacing issues for a proper VN.
>>

It's arguably better, actually. My sleep schedule is fucked up due to work, so I normally sleep from 3PM till 11PM.

Not really.

Consider that we will only do one route in this game.

If anything the dialogue will expand and explode.

"It must take a lot to handle that kind of teasing everyday," you say to Takamaru. "I'm not all that sure that I'd be able to take it."
"Yes, well..." Takamaru laughs. "she actually considers me to be too boring to play tricks on."
"Huh."
"She's talked to me many a time about how much she enjoys getting a reaction out of Princess Marianne, however. And considering her feelings for you, I suspect that she enjoys teasing you almost as much."
"I'm not sure how happy I should be about that..." you shrug, "but it is nice to see them acting so naturally."
"I agree, I rarely see Princess Luciana this lively."

As you watch the princesses show each other several different outfits and joke around about various things, you remember something...

"Oh yeah..." you say, turning back to Takamaru, "...would you be willing to spar later?"
"I will be busy later today," Takamaru says apologetially. "I may be able to spar with you tomorrow night, though I'm not sure just yet."

After some more waiting, the girls finally finish their shopping and you all head up to the front counter so that they can pay for their clothes.

"Just have it all brought to the castle later," Luciana says as she hands the attendant some money.
"Very well, Princess," the attendant replies as politely as she can.

With that out of the way, you head out of the store and onwards to your next stop.

You're really hoping that it's to get some lunch.

"...you go by your real identity while out in the city like this?" you ask Luciana.
"Yes, of course!" Luciana replies happily. "I suppose my father is less paranoid in that way than King Thierri is in that way."
"I don't hide my identity because I'm forced to," Marianne replies. "I go into town to get away from my usual routine, and using my actual name an station would un counter to that."
"Makes sense, I suppose," Luciana replies.

A lot if things need to be factored in
First pay for writers / artists / coders etc
Physical copies / postage / extras
Copyrights / programs / resources
Computers / rates / sometimes office rent
VA pay
Electricity / internet / publicity
QA / bug fixing / administrative costs that don't fall under the other headings

So you can see where a large game quickly runs up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs even for a small indie team just trying to get their game out on time bug free

After about ten minutes of walking, Luciana stops in front of a large restaurant.

"Ta-da~h!" Luciana says, doing an exaggerated twirl. "This place is called 'Green Dream.' It opened up a few months ago, and its food's really good!"
"So I assume that this is where we'll be having lunch?" Marianne asks.
"Yyyup! To be honest, I was planning on heading here after..." she drifts off. "...anyways, I'm sure that you'll enjoy it!"

"I'm surprised that you'd need a reservation, considering your position," you say.
"Well..." Luciana sighs. "...I -could- just tell them who I am and skip to the front. That's what my elder siblings and most of the nobles would do, anyways... but I always found doing things like that to be really rude towards the people who actually did take the time to reserve a spot."
"Oh," you reply, surprised. "you do have a point there."
"I may like to tease those I love," she says, winking, "but I'm a nicer girl than you think."

Moving ahead in line a little, you're pretty shocked to see just how many people are in here.

"Is this place always this crowded, or is it just because of the people who came in town for the birthday festivities?" you ask.
"Umm..." Luciana places a hand on her chin. "...it's always pretty bad, but it is a bit worse than usual so I guess so? I'm sure the owners are happy, but I feel kind of sorry for the waiters... they must be working themselves to death here."

Yeah, a night guard post back in the army honestly seems preferable to dealing with this massive amount of people, and those always SUCKED.

After a halfhour or so of waiting, you finally reach the front of the line and a waiter shows the four of you to a table. Immediately recognizing Luciana, he apologizes for making you wait so long, but she waves it off and tells him notto worry about it.

He did give you a table in the less crowded part of the restaurant... that was probably his way of making up for it.

Taking a seat next to Marianne, you see that she still seems kind of pissed at you. Looks like it's time to apologize.

"Umm, Marie?" you say, turning to her.
"What?" Marianne replies.
"About what I said earlier... I was only wondering if there was something else that you wanted to do in the city," you say in as best an apologetic tone as you can manage. "I know you like Mr. Marchamp and the Wilhelms, I wasn't trying to imply that it was boring going there with you or anything."

"C'mon, just forgive him already," Luciana says. "You know he didn't mean anything bad by it."
"Ugh, whatever," Marianne grumbles. "I'd forgotten how stupid you are sometimes."

So does that mean that she forgives you?

Yeah, it's probably best not to dwell on it. Pushing the issue will just make her angrier, and she -is- pretty moody to begin with...

"Uh..." you search through your mind for something to change the subject with, "...so what kind of food is this place known for?" you ask as you look through the menu.
"Hm? Pretty much anything that you'd expect... but what they specialize in is pasta. Spaghetti, linguine, lasagna..."

And as if on cue, a waiter arrives to take your order at that exact moment.

"And what will you be having today?" he asks.
"I'll have the lasagna," Luciana replies.
"An excellent choice, Princess," he says, jotting it down on a notepad before turning to Takamaru. "And you, sir?"
"...do you have grilled salmon here?" Takamaru asks.

Oh yeah, he can't read so the menu wouldn't be of any use to him...

Physical copies don't make a bulk of sales, but they're great for "exclusive" content, since all you need to do is print disks and boxes, which you can do even with a relatively cheap home printer, and they give a more "real" feeling of ownership.

>>28387027
A lot of that can be just done out of pocket though - archelon likely already has computers, a space to work, and electricity/internet, and he doesn't need to pay himself. VNs take fuck all coding, especially if you just do it in Ren'Py, then it's essentially just markup. All he'd really need is commissioned art and music. Hiring VAs would be a huge boost in cost, even if only for a few critical lines.

The only girl I'd say he's put serious effort into was Marianne and that's mostly because it's his job to and we're the only one around enough to help her out.

Looks like it'll be a while before your food gets here... might as well talk about something while you wait.

"That fountain seems like it's a pretty important landmark here," you say. "Is there anything special about it, aside from how big it is?"
"Father commissioned it to be built when Elena was born," Luciana replies. "Something about being proud that he has another child who had inherited his will, though I honestly have no idea what that means."
"I can see why he would think that now, but there's no way for him to have known right when she was born that she'd turn out as strong-willed as you..." Marianne says, shrugging.

"They do colored lights during special occasions, and we also gets street performers sometimes... it's become pretty popular as a date spot," Luciana says. "Giancarlo would always bring girls there..."
"Ugh, please don't mention him," Marianne grumbles.
"Sorry about that, Marianne."

Speaking about guests... you really don't know who is going to be at the party.

"Umm, would you happen to know anything about the party's guests?" you ask.
"Oh yeah, it probably would be good for you to know about the VIPs," Luciana says, nodding. "You already know about the Lanzmanns... Mr. Gilbeault and his brother are also here..."
"I wouldn't consider -him- to be one..." Marianne says derisively.
"Ehehe, I suppose you have a point there," she giggles. "Who else is worth mentioning..."

"Oh yeah!" Luciana claps her hands together. "My elder siblings will be attending! I feel kind of dumb for forgetting them. And aside from you guys, the only other REALLY important guest who'll be attending is the crown prince of Krassato and his wife."

After a bit more chatting between Marianne and Luciana about who they do and don't want to have to deal with at the party, the waiter arrives with your food.

Well, it's really not that hard. Just start with the route you're writing now. Don't set your reach beyond your grasp, I'd say just do it in Ren'Py and mark it up as you go, then you only need images. Background images are easy as fuck, and each character really just takes one portrait with a couple swappable faces for expressions.

I'm looking forward to it and I'm glad you're doing it.

I think the quest can be a lot more pleasant if everyone knows they can be with their Best Girl some day regardless of how things go here.

Yeah, you've talked enough. Now is the time...

...to CONSUME.

Taking care not to lose yourself in your hunger, you start eating after the girls have already begun.

Oh...

...oh wow...

"Marie!" you say excitedly. "This is really good, I should have gotten this last time!"
"...well I'm glad you like it," Marianne replies, slightly flustered.

As Luciana watches you with an expression that you can only describe as a catlike smile, you continue eating your food.

Your DELICIOUS FOOD.

Could use some salt, though.

Despite holding back, you still finish your food rather quickly. As you wait for the others to finish eating, you help yourself to the complimentary bread that was provided. Fortunately, they don't take too long.

After paying for the food (which Luciana was gracious enough to do for all of you), the four of you leave the increasingly more crowded restaurant and make it outside.

"Next up is a jewelry store I like and then I think that'll be all for today," Luciana says.
"I'm surprised that you didn't have more planned," Marianne replies. "It's still rather early."
"Yes, well... I did but then- nevermind, we can always hang out in the castle."

The biggest problem here is that Luciana is too much of a schemer. It really wasn't a good move to spring our dead not!dad on us as a surprise and expect us to go along with it or take it very well. She also wasn't thinking Citrine would like to go too, though that's a bit hard since she doesn't know the full circumstances.

She really should have just asked us about it beforehand. She meant well, but it was kind of insensitive how she went about it. I know that isn't something I'd like just dropped on me, especially if I woke up that day depressed about this stuff.

>>
>>28392247
Even then, you don't go "hey let's go have fun today" and then turn around and go "want to see a grave? I have this whole schedule worked out."

I just don't know what made her think surprising him with a grave visit of all things was something that would go over well.
>>
>>28392272
And?

Citrine and Reinhold were sibling status before Volker and the adoption thing. Luciana doesn't know she's involved with the situation either.

In fact I bet she's really confused just WHY Reinhold is going with Citrine in the first place.
>>
"Uh... did I mess something up by deciding not to go to the graveyard?" you ask, unable to ignore that nagging desire to KNOW.
"N- no, it's fine," Luciana replies, blushing slightly. "You were right... I didn't know that your sister was close to him as well, and it would probably be better if you went to pay your respects together. I'm sorry for springing it on you like that..."
"No, it's fine. I'm just glad that I'll be able to pay my respects at all."
"I'll give you the directions to the graveyard when we get back, so don't worry about my plans. I know I can go a little bit too far sometimes."

"I see that you've finally developed some self-awareness..." Marianne remarks.
"-You- are the last person I want talking to me about that," Luciana replies, poking Marianne on the forehead.

With that out of the way, the four of you start on your way to the jewelry store. Once inside, you and Takamaru step aside while the two girls fawn over the sparklies. After what seems like forever, they finally finish their business in the store and you finally start on your way back to the castle.

I still can't understand how anyone is taking the "offer to spar with Elena" suggestion as an honest desire to spar with her, rather than just playing around with a younger child by addressing them as an equal rather than speaking down to them.

Kids normally love that shit, but I suppose soul-crushing sibling terror overrides all impetus to fun.

"So, uh..." you begin, "what's everyone going to do when we get back to the castle?"
"Marianne and I are going to hang out," Luciana replies. "I had some stuff I wanted to talk with Sylvie about later, but that's pretty much it for my plans."
"Yes, we'll be sticking around our suite so you'll be free to go once we get there," Marianne says.

"What about you, Takamaru?" you ask.
"Just some personal matters to attend to once Princess Luciana gives me my leave," Takamaru replies. "I'm sorry that I won't be able to spar with you tonight."
"Ooh, sparring between you two?" Luciana chirps, her eyes sparkling. "Whenever you two get around to that, be sure to tell me..."
"I shall do so, Princess," Takamaru says, nodding.

It isn't long before you make it back to the castle. Luciana dismisses Takamaru once you reach the inner corridors, and then you work your way back upstairs to your rooms.

As you reach the area of the castle that you are staying at, you're surprised to see a familiar face...

...doing something unexpected.

"Oh, hi!" Elena says, happily waving at you from her perch atop Sir Gregory's shoulder.

"Ehehe... you're both goofy!" Elena laughs.
"I was just telling Elena here that this was originally Marianne's perch..." Sir Gregory says, smirking at her.
"That was a long time ago," Marianne mumbles under her breath.

"As nice as it is to run into you here, Elena and I have business to attend to," Sir Gregory points into the distance. "Elena, just say the word."
"Okay!" she says, raising a fist to the air. "Umm... let's go find Karel!"
"Aye aye, captain!"
"Okay, let's go!" she shouts. "Tailwind!"

"Seriously," you reply.
"I wonder if Nicolette's jealous of how close they are..." Luciana giggles. "Well, I suppose we should get back to your suite now."

You then head a few doors down the hallway, opening the door for the girls. While Marianne empties the contents of her bags on the table, Luciana pulls out a piece of paper and pencil and begins scribbling something down.

"Would you happen to know where Citrine and her husband are staying?" you ask.
"They're in the guest wing of the castle," Luciana replies. "Just ask someone to lead you there and it shouldn't be a problem."
"Alright, thanks. See you two later."

Waving goodbye, you make your way into the hallway, and then find the nearest butler to give you directions like Luciana suggested. Fortunately, he doesn't give you any trouble and leads you straight to their room.

Well, it's now or never.

KNOCK KNOCK

"Just a minute!" Citrine calls out from inside the room.

After a bit of furniture creaking and shuffling footsteps, the door opens and you're met with Citrine's smiling face.

"Reinhold!" she chirps, grabbing your hands. "Come inside!"

she then pulls you inside the room and pretty much forces you onto a couch.

"Hey Marius!" Citrine shouts. "Guess who came to visit us in our fancy castle room?"
"Hm?" he replies, peeking his head out from the bathroom. "Oh, hey!"

I hope this isn't too meta, or out of character for Reinhold, but I really think that at some point in the near future, perhaps on the walk/ride back from the grave visit, we should seek some advice from Citrine on our brewing romantic problems. I am not sure if Reinhold is able to pick up on the level of tension that is brewing here, but there are going to be some fireworks at some point. It would be nice to know that we could at least run to Citrine and/or Marius (who seems like a bro) if things start to go belly up.

"Heh, yeah... the money certainly doesn't hurt."

"How long hae you two been married, anyways?" you ask. "I've been wondering about that for a while now."
"We've been together for three years now," Marius replies.
"Yeah, he showed up about a year after you left," Citrine says. "And after like a month straight of having me model for him, he up and proposed..." she giggles.

"Yeah, I was freaking out about that for a while before I actually mustered up the courage," Marius sighs. "Not to mention that I felt like crap because that town didn't have anything even resembling an engagement ring to buy..."
"But he finally manned up and saved me from that awful place!" Citrine says happily. "And after a while, his art got popular with the nobility and now we went and got invited to a bigshot royal birthday party!"

"Yeah, life's been good," Marius says. "And my studio's not too far from the castle back in Granache, so feel free to visit whenever you have the time. We're family now, after all."

For kick starter projects they make a with ficant portion since people like to still get physical objects for their money

And like I said I don't know the details about making VNs I have limited experience with normal game production and medium to large sized teams at that I was just outlining how easily costs can climb when you go into a project like making a game

Smaller games projects and VNs can go under a lot of that because of their smaller teams etc I expect but I have no real experience with it so I didn't say anything about it

And while digital will make a large part of the continuing sales a lot of games still get more from their physical sales early on even with the advent of steam, gog etc because it is easier to sell someone a disc than a program for some reason even though the profit margin for hard copy is less

They have Cognatic succession. It's not that far-fetched.

Family... that really does have a nice ring to it. But now it's time to get to business...

"Hey, Citrine..." you sigh. "...remember how Volker said that he was from Marconetti?"
"How could I forget?" Citrine replies, instantly falling into a somber mood.
"Volker? Is that the guy who was going to..." Marius says.
"Yes," Citrine replies solemnly.

"Well, um... I actually mentioned him offhand when I was talking to Princess Luciana yesterday. It turns out that she recognized the name, and actually went and found his grave for me..." you say.
"R- really!?" Citrine gasps.
"Yeah. I wanted to go and pay my respects, but it wouldn't feel right if I didn't tell you first in case you wanted to come too."

Tears welling in her eyes, Citrine hugs you tightly.

"Of- of course I'd like to..." she says, choking back tears. "Thank you so much for telling me, Reinhold!"
"No problem..." you say, starting to choke up as well. "I was actually going to head there now, but I don't know if you two had anything planned."

"We didn't have anything planned, no," Marius says. "Go on ahead, I'll explore the castle while you're out."
"You can come too if you want," you reply. "I mean, it's not a problem or anything."
"No, you two can go on ahead," he sighs. "This is the kind of thing that you two should do together, after all."

From what I've seen It's Agnotic-Cognatic. I think.

"Don't mind me," Marius says, giving you two a thumbs-up. "I won't die of loneliness just from being away from you for a few hours."
"Ehehe... thanks, Marius," Citrine says as she dries her eyes off with a handkerchief.

Saying goodbye to Marius, you and Citrine make your way out of the castle. Fortunately, the directions that Luciana wrote up are extremely easy to understand and you're able to find the route that she specified pretty easily.

Doesn't hurt that you have a few hours of daylight left in the day, too.

We've only really seen high society so far and what we've seen looks like early 18th century European courts mainly just the hapsburgs to me but given that we're pre-industrialization divorce among the commoners would still be extremely uncommon simply because both partners need each other far, far more than partners need each other in the current era.

I'm interested in seeing how common magic is among the general populace though, that'll really impact society in general since, I assume, magic doesn't discriminate between genders.

Also, while I'm thinking about it, Arch you should watch Fall of Eagles, it's an amazing series about the 19th and early 20th century royalty and the events surrounding them.
Amazing cast too.

That said, if Reinhold is the kind of person who would talk to a person while visiting their grave which he probably is, since he is stuck in a medium that encourages speech rather than introspection, the whole tournament/Monique's sword anecdote seems like the kind of thing he might think Volker would appreciate hearing about.

"...maybe we should get flowers or something for the grave?" you say to Citrine.
"Y- yeah, that would be a good idea..." Citrine replies quietly. "There ought to be at least one florist or something along the way."

And so you continue on the way to the cemetary, both of you keeping an eye out for where to pick up a bouquet. Sadly, you reach the cemetary itself without spotting a single florist... but there's a flower cart just outside.

Hooray for opportunism?

After picking up a bouquet from the stand, you and Citrine head into the cemetary itself. Despite the sun being up, it's still quite the eerie place to be... and you realize that you don't know where exactly Volker's grave is.

"Um, excuse me?" you call out to a nearby groundskeeper.
"What is it?" he replies. "come here to pay your respects?
"Yeah... do you you happen to know where the Eschenwald family's gravesite is?" Citrine asks.
"Eschenwald? Oh yes, that one... just keep on that way until you see a large monument, you can't miss it."
"Thank you, sir."

Going in the direction that the groundskeeper specified, you eventually spot a fancy stone monument with the name "Eschenwald" engraved on it... great, you found it.

Approaching the monument, the two of you look around for Volker's grave...

...and spot an old lady, supporting herself with a cane.

No, no, no.

We need a concrete thing for her to see that we do appreciate her and what she did, and for Marianne to see that we're primarly nice to people because they're nice to us, not out of self-interest or lust.

The only question is... What to do for her? She has eveything!

Unless we "capture" her and make her go on an adventure, giving up everything else, my dreadful lack of imagination don't see anything to please her at the top of my head.[/spoiler )

>>28394639
I think we were supposed to have lunch at the Eschenwald's house or something. Luciana didn't have a reservation for the place we ate at even though she planned the day out and said she was planning on heading there herself after [redacted].

Likely this means she was planning on leaving Reinhold and Marie alone for some time with the Eschenwalds before meeting up again and doing the other stuff she had planned for the end of the day.
>>
>>28394729
Grimoires.
>>
>>28394729
It doesn't have to be this huge thing.

We've got Marie gifts before and even though they were things she could easily get herself she still appreciated them.
>>
>>28394669
I find myself really liking Luciana, maybe we could ask Takamaru-dono if she has any specific hobbies or something that we could surprise her with.

>>28394729
Well she technically has everything, yeah, but in reality she's probably just as lonely as Marie. Maybe we can arrange for some 'unofficial' time away from the castle...

>>28394745
Nice reading between the lines. I still feel like we need to pay her back though.

>>28394747
Nice memory, completely skipped my mind. Maybe the old lady knows something about grimoires, I can't think of anyone else who would...but that definitely fits the bill for a Thoughtful Reinhold Gift.

Niklaus, for one. Our creepy but skilled librarian, for another.
>>
>>28394786
I'd have to go back and check, but grimoires are just really old tomes about magic and magic related subjects right? Not forbidden or anything like that? I think I remember her saying that it was a secret she was collecting them. We could send a letter back to the castle to request a grimoire that either of those two would most certainly have somewhere though.
>>
>>28394810
They're a secret because her dad's a sexist who doesn't want her to be as good as magic as a guy.
>>
>>28394810
They're forbidden for her because her dad doesn't want her to study magic for whatever reason.
>>
>>28394745
That's a pretty reasonable guess, actually.

If the old lady is from the family (which makes sense given that she's loitering around their plot), she's of an age and in a position where she probably would've been privy to Volker's intention to take in two kids.

Given that this was something Luciana set up just thinking that we were just an (admittedly close) acquaintance of his, rather than an adopted child-to-be, she might not have put quite so much weight on our visiting his family, and felt like it would be fine to explain for the circumstances that kept us from visiting after the fact.

I suspect that even if we didn't make a possible lunch date, an old lady with the knowledge that we were in town and hadn't yet come to visit his grave could easily imagine that she'd be able to find us there at some point if she wanted to talk, especially if she knew the extent of Volker's relationship to us.

also it would totally make sense that this would be able to happen since because PLOT

>>28394810
It was a secret that she's collecting them because she's trying to keep it from her father, much like how Elena is trying to hide that she's aspiring to do swording.
