Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

You have collected and reforged each Shard of your past self. Three of the four keys to Hecate's prison are in your possession; you are certain as to the location of the last. The Black Lady has joined the alliance between the Great Forest, Felnoir, and Archon. More importantly, you've convinced both you allies in Haven and the Archonians that this is a good thing.

Soon, your collected followers will meet in Arland, ready to shock the world with a force comprised of outsiders and rulers joined together against the demon lords summoned by Kan-Abar.

It's halfway through winter. Auriel has predicted that Kan-Abar won't move until the snow thaws and spring arrives, but rather consolidate control over their newly captured territories. So far, that prediction has held true.

A banquet was held in the Black Lady's honor by Yi Fang, introducing her to the Archon nobility and cementing Abigail as a councilor and major political force. Once again, he's turned the unexpected into a powerful advantage.

Things seem to be aligning themselves as you've planned for some time. However, one last thing weighs on your mind.

But before you can address your concern over the robots that have repeatedly attacked you and your allies, something else crops up. Flint, feeling the pressure of returning home after so long with the weight of your alliance on his back, is at the frayed end of his ability to cope - to the point that he got into a shouting match with Auriel. She asked you to speak with him, and now you stand at the threshold of his room, thinking of what to say.

>Last time...

You continue to the left side of the courtyard and down the main hallway, ascending some stairs to the main corridor before the bridge. If you had to guess, you'd assume the officers would be housed here - for quick access to the bridge. You find room 1010 on your right hand side and give the door a sharp rap. <Flint?>

There's a shuffling, and the sound of footsteps. The old steel door creaks open. A disheveled Sir Flint stands before you. "...Shadow! I'm...I'm glad to see you. How's Abby?"

<She's well. Can I come in?>

"Uh, sure, yeah."

You step into the room. It's a bit messy. His bed is unmade, and a table under a light on the wall is covered in balled-up scrap paper. A feather-pen stands straight in the air, leaning out of an inkwell. Otherwise, the space is relatively bare. Then again, he doesn't have much to decorate it with.

Flint sits back on his bed, and you give him the news about Archon. He offers you a half-smile, and nods. "I'm glad things worked out. The Black Lady...it seems weird to think she's on our side. But friends can be found in strange places in times of trouble. Don't I know it."

<Indeed.>

You fall quiet for a moment.

What do you say?

I mean, the thread sat around for like 5 hours last time without any dialogue options, so I tried to write something, and there might've been some reasonable ideas buried in there somewhere but in retrospect it was waaaaay too heavy-handed and I'm really kind of relieved that SM didn't just run with it.

<You writing something?>

Flint sighs. He folds his hands over his legs. "More like failing to write something."

<What about?>

"...trying to introduce myself at the front of an alliance four countries strong to family members I haven't seen in six years. What's up with you?"

<Just wanted to see how you were,> you say. <Seems like you're more than a little torn.>

"...yeah."

<Well, just say what you have to say. What is necessary? Say those things.>

"...that's the patented Shadow method, huh? Blunt and forward."

<Actually, it's called the Bed Method.>

"Huh?"

<Never mind,> you say quickly. <But I wouldn't overthink this. Actually, I'm glad you thought to write it. That should help soften the blow somewhat.>

Flint shrugs. "Well, even if it was just us, we couldn't show up with Obis in tow without even letting them know. I just...I don't know. The people that are going to read this letter...there's my father, my three brothers. Hemmelus - what do I say to him, my mentor? For the Light's sake, what do I say to Megan? I don't even know where to begin."

And I suppose tell them you're sorry for what you choices did to them and Arland but that you have comrades and allies who will stand with you the entire way to help you achieve what needs to be done. And I suppose if you want....tell them about the friends you've made on your journey>

Oooh! good angle!

he's struggling with words because he's struggling to process the reasons he left and how its changed his opinion and how he carries all this baggage that's still in place because of HOW he left to run off and recreate a knightly order.

>>

I wish to have Resolve and Humanity take a look at the Aurora water gem thing and see how closely it resembles our shards. How much we'd have to work on it to add it to ourself.

Having another source keeping the Greater Elementals out would be good. Would be nice to be able to have more shards preventing apocalypse.
>>
>>28369127
I doubt it works that way. It's Water, which is Chaos. Also, the seal isn't for the Elementals, we've already confirmed it's some sort of primal Chaotic energy.
>>
>>28369127
>Would be nice to be able to have more shards preventing apocalypse.
From my understanding of the situation, that wouldn't happen and isn't possible.
It is probably a shard (or something) of Leviathan, however it almost definitely isn't coded into holding the seal, and it would likely take Erebus's power to do that to it.
>>
<Well,> you say, <why don't you just tell them the truth?>

"What do you mean?"

<Tell them what's happened to you. Tell them about your journey. That you've seen things you didn't think you would when you left - that you've found the love of your life, and started to think about what family really means.

<That was why you left, right? You wanted to get away.>

"I...yeah. I guess...being with her...it has made me think. About home. About...taking back wanting to leave." He looks up, past you, at the door leading out of the room. "I thought...somehow, it would work out. Making Aeolus's Order once again. But it never really coalesced. I stayed alone. I wanted to be alone. That was just an excuse. A quest to get the 'why' off my back."

<I think that some things would be better said face-to-face,> you say, <but as far as the reason for your return...well. You've grown, right? Write about that.>

"I've grown," Flint nods. "And I've met some pretty amazing people." He stands up, crosses the room. He leans forward on the desk, staring at the blank sheet of paper lying at its center. "Some pretty amazing friends. I've made some amazing allies, to. And I'll be coming home. Because home is in trouble. And I have to..." Flint's hands ball into fists. "I have to save it."

<...I think you've got it,> you say.

Flint stands straight. He looks at you. "...thanks, Shadow. I really needed that. I kept thinking about how to bring half the world together in a letter...but...it should have just been about me from the start. That's all it needs to be."

Flint rubs his forehead. "Well...I have to make up for that, later. But thanks."

<Sure. I'm sure Auriel was just trying to help. She's just...well. Auriel.>

<I'm off for now,> you say to Flint. <Good luck.>

"Thanks. I'll need it. But where are you going this time?"

<To settle things with Steward, and the rest of the constructs.>

Flint nods slowly. "...I guess you'd better do that. But don't take too long. We have to move - and soon."

<I know.>

-------
-------

A short time later at the Shadow mana pool, you stand before your fully upgraded construct. You took a little scrap from the hulk of the Noiralev - it was a simple task after that. For some reason...you can 'see' the robot's construction...feel how it's built. You couldn't explain it if you tried. The knowledge is simply intuitive.

The result of your efforts stands next to the pool. Spinning within it is a powerful core of shadow, a not-quite dynamo, wired through to its arms and legs like the lifeblood of a living creature. Shadow power hums over the smooth adamantium plates of its armor casing, coating it like a skin. You feel that it could stand up to both physical and magical attacks very well.

As you back away, the robots snaps to attention. And then its limbs dance in a jittering, chaotic pattern. There is no apparent ryhme or reason to the jerking movements and rotating appendages.

The shadow-skin morphs slightly, forming into a pair of streamlined fins on its back. It morphs again, forming spikes on its feet, and then jets of shadow that lift it a few inches off the ground. Finally, the skin extends into blades off the top of its wrists, then snap back.

And then it stops, and remains still.

"Initial operations check completed. All systems at 100%. Awaiting instruction."

The odd words of the tinny voice don't seem out of place to you. You suppose that's a good thing.

What do you do?

>name the robot
>give it some instructions
>write-in

Guys, we killed one forever ago. Remember back in the murder canyon? When we met Steward? It was before that. Back when we weren't all that strong.

"Program" the bot with some global codes - never attack ourselves or any of the party members, or any of Haven's residents, for that matter.

<Your name is...Shade.>

"Understood. This unit will respond to the designation 'Shade'."

You run through a list, giving the robot the names of friends and foes, as well as a priority list for who to protect if needed. The robot affirms each order as given, though warns it cannot prioritize things it isn't familiar with. You think for a moment, then feed it impressions, images and memories of the people and things you've mentioned. It understands immediately.

That's useful.

"Inquiry: current mission status."

<Right now, you're with me. We're going to locate the source of the robots and figure out what, exactly, is going on.>

Shade gives you a stiff nod. "Understood. I agree that the actions of the constructs designated with '002' seem highly irregular. Determining how to stem future attacks seems best in order to protect designees Abigail Fang, Donovan Flint, among others. Additionally, it is an unknown variable in the greater conflict against Kan-Abar."

<My thoughts exactly. How fast can you move?>

"I am capable of gliding in short bursts. I can move across the ground quite rapidly while utilizing under-foot jet propulsion. However, the power rerouting to maintain balance and speed reduces my overall attack power. In essence, I trade mobility for defensive and offensive power in real time. Both defense and mobility are limited while utilizing higher magical functions."

<I see.>

What do you tell the robot?

>in the case of a conflict, prioritize your survival first, and then the destruction of enemies
>prioritize the destruction of enemies
>prioritize my safety first
>some other general combat-orientation ruleset

<Follow me.>

You walk outside. Your robot moves smoothly behind you, walking not with the halting gait of your first construct, but an even, balanced stride.

You grasp it under the arms. <Hold on.> As instructed, its hands clench around your limbs.

You flap up into the air, getting clear of Haven until Hamil's illusion wavers into place. You fly up and over the Great Forest, heading for the dig site. By air, it won't take you long to get there.

---------
---------

The dig site is a mess. The gaping hole left by the airship you used marks the center of the ground. Felled trees and broken temporary housing for the men doing the labor are strewn about the craters and scorched marks left by the battle between Vonnegut's men, the angels, and the constructs. You set down inside the clearing.

A large chasm where the robots emerged still splits the ground.

You use Deep Focus to try and learn more.

<Get behind me,> you tell Steward.

You prepare your Earthforge. The spell swirls around you, ready to be unleashed - but you hold it just before letting it do its work.

You let your human form waver and collapse as you stretch up, up, and out, forming a giant half-circle. The swirling force of the void condenses at the center of your mouth, ready to consume everything in your path.

It would be hard to just keep pushing the rock and earth out of the way - so why do that when you can feed it into a hole that can't be filled.

You unleash both spells. Rock and earth churns forward, only to be annihilated and sucked away. You chew forward at a rapid rate, almost running down at a steep angle into the earth.

It's easy to keep yourself on track. When you go off the pre-churned path the constructs already dug, your earthforge spell strains to keep up. You just correct your course until the pull on your mana slows.

You go like that for several minutes -

And in a cloud of dust, you emerge from the earth. You find yourself standing at the end of a crevice - larger than the one the robots forced open, more natural. This was already here.

An entrance to the Timorian Deep.

You've already got a cross between the void and normality spinning in your mouth, chewing through air as it comes in. You don't feel the need to do anything further.

The tip of the iron drill bends as it enters your Gaping Maw, and then is shredded, bit by bit. You take off half the arm before the robot attacking you thinks better of its assertiveness and withdraws, stepping back.

It's a hulking machine, much bigger than your own robot. The click and grind of gears and pistons clacks through the underground canyon. Steam rises from its back. A power core churns in its midsection, but it seems altogether primitive compared to some of the constructs you know. An older model?

"Threat level: extreme." Its voice is hard and flat. "Activating self-destruct."

The power core glows bright.

But then, Shade is there, driven forward by its jetboots. It thrusts its palm forward, contacting hard on the golem's power core. A burst of steam hisses from the golem's back, and then it slumps over, silent.

The skin of Shade's hand morphs into thin projections of shadow. They edge between the plates of the robot, then extract the core. It proffers it to you. "An exposed core is an obvious weakness. Old models contain this feature as they could not cool themselves otherwise. More powerful models may contain this feature for the same reason."

<How did you know that?>

"It was inherent knowledge in my construction, along with my combat abilities, movement, speech, and internal architecture."

It seems your abilities go beyond your own understanding. You wonder if the old Erebus knew what he was doing more than you did. You can make a powerful device, but you don't really get how it works. But at least it works!

What do you do now?

You use Deep Focus.

Your power echoes off the walls - which strikes you as extremely odd. Your Focus has always penetrated right through solid objects.

But then you see it, on the far end of the chasm - adamantium. It gleams like a wall of diamonds tinted just slightly green. Your senses rebound off the thick vein and soar down another tunnel.

Your awareness expands. The raw adamantium has some strange affect on its range, and rather than slow or fade, your senses are amplified several times. A network of maze-like tunnels expands in your mind.

And...there! A trace of Earth - the residue of powerful magic. It reminds you of the Dynamo Warrior's earth-based explosions. That could be a good starting point.

You sense something familiar in the same direction - many familiar presences, actually. Animalistic. Spirit...and Earth?

Suddenly, it hits you.

The Vog. A hole nest of them lies between you and your destination. You remember how fast they can burrow...this is definitely their territory, not yours.

<I'm going to go ahead and clear the way,> you tell Shade. <Stay here, keep alert. Make sure nothing comes in behind me.>

"Understood."

You creep forward through the tunnels. The rock is irregular; in some places, there's no path at all. This poses little problem for you. You Ink and crawl your way down sheer slopes, stabbing in little spikes to leverage yourself downward. Even if you fell, you could just glide. It seems that the bottom of the chasm is marked by an underground river.

You climb halfway through the chasm when you come upon the rocky tunnel that is your destination. You find steady ground, then consider the situation.

Directly ahead, the tunnel continues on a short distance, then opens up into a wide chamber in which you can sense many Vog. That chamber has many side-rooms that host smaller groups. It reminds you of a rabbit's nest - wide spaces interconnected by thin tunnels, dug out where the earth is soft.

Past the main chamber, the tunnel continues on to the location where you sensed the Earth magic.

You creep forward along the tunnel, hoping that your shadowmeld is enough to evade detection...

I think you're misapplying how much of a hivemind the vog have, or the way mindcrush has worked before. As it attacks a mind directly by spirit and the vog hivemind works by rapid communication and short pulses of magic, which is what we learned fighting them last time. It's not a "active" network of constant magical connections, but a response & sensory network with rapid pulses.
So I think terror would abuse their trait of communication more strongly while also stunning each one directly from the fear.
>>
>>28372689
Stop fucking up so hard, dude.

You creep up through the tunnel. Nothing moves in your senses; no magic, no life. You're pretty sure you've made it through.

You come upon the chamber.

It's a rough, rugged place - and old. Stalactites bristle from the ceiling in a forest of rock. It's huge - plenty of space to move in, even fly, if you had to.

The ground is covered in slumbering vog. And they're disgusting creatures. Ugly, warped apes, with arms that are too long and heads flatted into their shoulders. Their hair is patchy, vestigial from a time when they didn't live under the earth.

This could be quite the buffet. You really need to make that first strike count.

So. Terror,
Followed by Earthforging all the [stunned] Vog into the big chamber for concentration,

IF some resist well enough after that use Terror(stuns with fear) or Dark Blizzard(stuns with freezing) or Nightblaze(doesn't stun, but severs intelligent communication),

And Gaping Maw the [stunned] Vog in either case.

What is it with you and earth forge?
Not trying to be mean, but it seems like a pointless action that could back fire easily.

I'd just make sure everyone knows we are currently in the 'evil' territory of actions. Not that I care too much, but I don't want any excuses later if this affects our reputation.

Different anon than me, and I was recommending plan earthforge.

You see, like me, he's seen avatar: The last airbender.

Let me make a comparison.

Earthforge is Toph mode.

Have you ever played D&D4e?
Imagine being able to change the terrain of the battlefield around at will - difficult, easy, cover, working as an escalator to bring favorable transitions - all for 6 mana.

Its AMAZINGLY good

The only problem with that plan is that its against beings that are made to dig through earth.

I thought it was an interesting way to concentrate their stunned mass for consumption, rather than having us constantly moving around consuming one stunned vog after another one at a time- it could be done more quickly and the ones in the siderooms wouldn't be able to burrow away quickly enough, and that having them in a concentrated area would make our next magical stuns easier.

Can't dig if stunned tho
or terrified
or cut off from the group mind telling you what
or if your diggers are restrained.

Why is it a problem?

Its not about trapping, though

its about consuming them as fast as possible before the stunlocks wear off.

>Resolve - Broken
>mana: 31/58

You bring forward the power to null out chaotic energy. In a flash, a light like darkness fills the room, expanding from your position and enveloping the central chamber, and the outer three, as well.

But the spirit mesh that binds the vog together resists your power. It hums brighter, affirming itself in the face of your denial. There's too many of them in one place!

Their eyes flicker open as one, all locked on you.

<Resolve!>

Your shard answers your call. In an instant, the power of your Nightblaze redoubles. Lose rocks shake with the force, then vaporize, little bits of matter that are no match for the Order you impose upon them.

The connection between the vog pulses, flickers, and dies. The hard, vicious gazes go blank. You see drool leaking out the mouth of the one closest to you. They're totally vulnerable!

What do you do?!

>NEXT TIME!

Next time will probably be Wednesday night. See twitter.

To all a good night!

So are you going to do anything about the double voting that is possible by rolling?
>>
>>28373338
So now that they're dumb animals [temporarily?] what do you guys think our next course of action should be?

Consume is the obvious, but with gaping maw or not? And what to do if that spirit mesh starts returning or if the vog start fleeing?
>>
>>28373382

I've never counted votes that had rolls in them.

So I'm currently reading the entire archive to get up to date and... goddamn this has got me gripped/entertained.

Had to just come here and quote this though

>"Did you say something? Oh, no. You must have been busy abdicating your throne."
