Well, she seems legitimate enough. But just to be safe - could she at least give you an idea of which Professor she's taking you to? Just to be sure that you've got the right person and everything.

The girl with the pale blond hair - so pale it's almost snow white - blinks her brilliant blue eyes at you, and nods. "I...well, the good Professor has...has these metal things sticking out from where her ears should be? Or rather, near them, at least?" She holds both her gloved hands over her ears, as if pantomiming earmuffs.

"She also has stitches here," She traces a line going down from her forehead to her left eye with a fingertip. "And here, as well..." Another line, this time tracing a line from cheek to cheek, going across the corners of her mouth. "And she has this accent where she elongates random syllables in words, and--"

Okay, okay. That should be Professor Madaraki. That's enough.

Yeah, if she can lead you to her, you'd really appreciate it.
>>
>>28335824

"Of course, Miss Malal." She curtseys, here. "But before that, may I introduce myself first? I am Odette Brighton, Eversor and Warmaster in Training of the Seventeenth. I am tasked to ensure the good Professor's safety in Varrigan City for the duration." A smile crosses her lips. "And it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Ah. Um. Well. You're glad to meet her, too. You'd introduce yourself, but she already knows who you are, it looks like.

...Jesus Christ, are all the girls from the Seventeenth THIS polite? Not that it's bad or anything, but god damn if it isn't slightly unnerving. And you thought Enyo was goody-two-shoes incarnate earlier. This girl is like Peaches and Cream Personified.

"The good Professor told me about you, and tasked me to bring you to her." Odette nods. "She seems quite excited to meet you, and couldn't stop talking about it." She gestures with a hand towards the crowd. "If you'll follow me, then, Miss Malal?"

That's...hmm. You've had your doubts about the Thirteenth - their history's always been a bit murky, from what Kyuubey told you about them - but being able to hire the Seventeenth's budding Warmaster for a simple escort job? Either Madaraki's rolling in money or has some serious connections of her own, here.

You keep this in mind, while continuing to follow Odette through the crowd. The young girl easily slipping through the throng, while you find yourself being jostled.

...Oh, you almost forgot. You point out to the Eversor that there's some cookie bits on her lips, if she wants to know. And isn't it a bit too early for snacks? She'll ruin her appetite.

[1/2]
>>
>>28335846

"Hmm? I...oh. I see. Thank you, Miss Malal." The girl smiles again, and you see her take a napkin from her skirt pocket and carefully pat her lips clean. "And I suppose so, but I'm afraid I couldn't resist the temptation."

She holds out what looks like a small cloth bag full of candy and cookies tenderly wrapped in thin rice paper. "Mom - um, I mean, my Warmaster made these for me, to take along for the mission. I've been trying to stop myself from having one ever since I left home, but..." She smiles somewhat bashfully at you. "Would you like some, Miss Malal?"

Well...sure, why not. A bit of sugar would help, you're feeling a bit worn down from that crazy motorcycle ride earlier. You take one of the plastic-wrapped maple candies from the bag and make to unwrap it, before popping it into your mouth via Culexus Trick #12: detaching the air filter plate really quickly and dropping whatever you wanted to snack on down the vent leading to your mouth before the suit depressurizes.

Hey, this is pretty good. Really sweet, but pretty tasty. You ask for another one, to have for later.

...Hah, wait. Did she just call the Seventeenth Warmaster 'Mom'?

"M-merely a bad habit, Miss Malal. Please pay it no mind." You hear the slightest tremble in Odette's calm, clear voice, and you're positive that she's blushing like crazy.

You let her lead you to the Professor in peace. There's no need to tease the girl about it - a lot of girls in the Ninth make that kind of connection with their tutors and squad leaders. Well, more of a big sister thing than anything else, but for the really younger recruits...

...It must be nice, though. Having someone as a maternal figure.

Everyone should have someone nice like that.

After what seemed to be a relative eternity squeezing past the crowd that no matter what you did, always walked in the opposite direction as you - Odette finally leads you into what looks like a typical Chinese restaurant. One that has rather strange creatures swimming in the wall of aquariums at front - the sort that have no place in any menu, Chinese or otherwise.

"Ah, Miss Malaaaal! Over heeeere, please!" A tremulous, sing-song voice comes at you from one corner of the otherwise unoccupied restaurant - and you turn to see a rather sickly-looking girl with long yellow-blonde hair wave at you, her dark amber eyes as wide as her smile. And there's really no mistaking her for anyone else other than Professor Madaraki - if the white labcoat wasn't a complete giveaway, then the steel bolt-things sticking out of her skull and the stitches on her face should be. "Miss Maaaalal!"

"That's the good Professor," Odette smiles as she nibbles on another cookie. "Take your time in talking with her, Miss Malal, as she seems to have a lot to say to you. As for this establishment's security, please do not worry - Xerxes and I will be guarding the only entrance and exit, here.

Xerxes? Who's that? Another magical girl you haven't met yet?

It's here that Odette seems to go pale. "Um, well, not exactly. I believe the good Professor calls him her pet, but she treats him more like a younger sibling than anything else." You see her shiver the slightest bit. "A-anyway, I'll go and stand guard outside, Miss Malal. Please don't hesitate to call out if there's anything you need!"

Right. Sure. You watch as the white-haired Eversor stations herself just outside the restaurant, a rather oversized spear materializing in her hands.

[3/4]
>>
>>28335889

You turn towards Madaraki, and turn away immediately, covering your visor with a hand. ...Is she supposed to be this excited? Because you've never really met her before. It was Xiaomei who arranged this meeting, not you - and the Seventh's Spiritual Leader was adamant that she was trustworthy, despite your own suspicions.

You look back at the professor, and she's still waving. In fact, waving with both hands now, beaming happily.

...Nah. No one who's planning to stab anyone in the back should look THAT happy.

You tell Odette to take it easy on those cookies, before finally making your way towards Madaraki Fran.

"Oh, Miiiiss Malal! I've beeeen looking forward to meeeeeting you!" The sickly-looking Venenum stands up on rather shaky legs, holding both hands out toward you - and you hesitate for the slightest bit before reaching out in kind. She giggles here, shaking her head, before stepping forward slowly and...capturing you in a close, if rather awkward hug.

"Miiiiss Malal! I've looked forwaaaard to this day~!"

She's taller that you, but at the same time feels fragile. Like you could snap her in half easily.

...Smells like hospital antiseptic too. Not a bad smell, just slightly off-putting. But a clean smell nonetheless.

How do you react?

You try to return the hug as gently as you could, while letting the Professor take her time with you. You're not really much of a hugging person, moreso when it's a complete stranger initiating the hug - but you at least know enough not to counter the attempt with a headbutt or two.

She holds the embrace for a few moments more, before finally letting go and stepping back, the venenum smiling with a pink blush on her pale cheeks. "Ahahahaaaah...I apologize, Miss Malal, if that surprised you. I was hoping to hold myself back, but..." She giggles here, a slow, strange trill of laughter that would've sounded creepy if it had come out from the corner of a really dark room. "...well, aaaanyway~! Please, sit down, I realize we only have a short period of time together, so we might as well get riiiiight to it!"

Uh. Yeah. Okay. You make to take your seat, but you feel as if you should be helping her to hers - she's breathing a bit hard, here, with her knees clearly shaking as she lowers herself back onto her seat. ...She's not going to die on you here, is she?

"Huh? Oh, nooooo!" That strange, yet endearing giggle again, and she finally manages to seat herself. "I-it's just me getting used to my land legs again, that's a-all~!"

Oh. Ah, yeah, the Thirteenth's base is always at sea most of the time, so that makes sense.

It must be difficult, though, losing her sea legs every time she goes ashore?

"O-oh, not really! It's just a matter of making suuuuure they're well-packed in ice before I put them back in storage in my quarters!"

...Uh. Right. Okay.

You quickly abandon that topic, and go right to the meat of the matter. About Valnikov Ekaterina--

"Yes! Yes! We will get to that sooooon!" It's here that Madaraki pulls what looks like a large suitcase from underneath the dining table, placing it right in the middle of the half-empty dishes and opening it with two solid-sounding metal clicks.

You don't quite see what's in it, as she opened it facing away from you - but you spy her taking out what looks to be a large metal syringe from the suitcase and placing it on the table, along with several small stoppered test tubes. "We will talk of her while we do the saaaaample extraction~!"

...Sample extraction?

"Sample extraction...!" The Professor looks up at you, stars in her dull amber eyes. "Just like we agreed on! Four ampoules of Miss Malal's blood and plasma, in exchange for Ekaterina Valnikov!"

Wait. What.

Xiaomei didn't tell you anything about this!

"Eeeeeh~?" Madaraki blinks. "B-but Xiaomei-chaaaaan said that you were really loooooking forward to it, too! She said you were haaaaappy to do your part in the mighty, inexorable progress of SCIENCE!"

. . .

"Saaaaa~! Come on, Miss Malaaaal!" The blonde girl grins, her eyes wide and staring, the evil-looking metal syringe looking positively menacing perched between her fingers. "Close your eyes and show some skin~ This won't hurt a biiiiit!"

How do you react?

...For fuck's sake, what kind of syringe is that? It looks like the kind of needle you'd use to pump a horse full of drugs. And no you're not afraid of needles or anything but seriously they freak you out and can she point it somewhere else first? You just want to...you just want to check with Xiaomei first, and stuff. Yeah. You won't be a moment.

"Eh? Oh, ooookay..." Fran cants her head to the side quizzicaly, like a cat, but she seems to acquiesce. "Take your time, Miiiiss Malal, but remember we're on the clock heeeere~!"

You nod, before stepping away from the table and activating your codec. It's you doing the calling now, and when Xiaomei answers, you mute your outward-facing vox enough so you can speak without it being broadcasted out to everyone.

WHAT THE HELL, XIAOMEI? WHAT THE HELL? WHAT'S THIS ABOUT SAMPLES? WHY DIDN'T SHE TELL YOU ABOUT--

"Ayah, don't shout, lah." Xiaomei drawls. "Before you shout again, Malal, I will tell you story."

What?! You don't have time for stories--

"SHut up and listen, okay?" The brown-haired girl frowns at you. "Okay. Few months ago, there was this Culexus, who is sooooo ugly she never take off her helmet unless she going to shower."

Xiaomei--

"This ugly Culexus, she ask her beautiful and smart friend in Seventh Officio to help find way to rescue girl from asshole of world, Varrigan City. Even though both of them know that kind of thing impossible. And beautiful and smart friend remember what ugly Culexus say. Do you remember what that Culexus say too, Malal?"

. . .

"Well? I am not talking to wall here, right?"

...You told her to find a way, no matter what.

"Yes! Malal brain working still." Xiaomei lets out a sigh, before smiling tiredly at you from her HUD portrait. "This is that 'no matter what', Malal. Is what you asked for."

But did it have to be BLOOD of all things?! Why couldn't it have been money, or, or--

[1/2]
>>
>>28337088

I'm not saying she was, I'm saying the mob did it.
>>
>>283370

"Malal, you know I had to bargain her down, right? This is cheapest bargain I could get you. Did you know what she wanted, originally? Want to know?"

What was it?

"Living tissue sample. She want piece of your skin, muscle, hair, bone. All of those, for Valnikov Ekaterina. ...Oh, and one kidney, too. Because why not?"

. . .

Xiaomei grins at your silence, before shaking her head. "Now you know, and now, isn't as bad to give blood instead of those, eh?" She sighs. "Go on, stop being such big baby. Give blood. Just think of it as transfusion, to save someone's life. ...Well, isn't it something like that already?"

Yeah. Yeah, you guess it does.

You thank Xiaomei, before walking back to Madaraki. Sitting back down on your chair and activating your outward-facing vox once more, after a fashion.

"Ah, are we okay, theeeeeen, Miss Malaaaaaal?" The Professor beams at you, all smiles. "Can we continue with the extraction?"

Sure, you nod. ...It's not going to hurt, is it?

"Of course not!" The blonde blinks, looking as if you'd personally insulted her. "We are only drawing blood, Miss Malal, not extracting living tissue!" It's here that she smiles, hopefully. "Although, if you are volunteeering~"

NO. Er...no, thanks. Just the blood.

"Oh, well. It was worth a shot! But yes, let's begin the extraction~"

. . .

And so, you allowed Madaraki Fran to draw your blood. Four ampoules of it. You let her take it from your hand - right after you turned up your suit up to Maximum, to make sure that your anti-magic juju doesn't affect anyone even with you just exposing your hand. And it didn't really hurt all that much - she even gave you a lollipop for "being a veeeeeery good girl and not flinching at all!"

"Perfect!" The blonde professor squeals as she carefully slots in each ampoule of freshly-drawn blood - YOUR blood - in a rather expensive-looking metal case, before hugging it close to her chest. "Oh, happy days are heeere again!!"

I like her.
>>
>>28337105

You very nearly choke on the lollipop you're noisily crunching to pieces at that. ...Was your blood samples really that important?

"Oh, you haaave no idea, Miss Malal!" Stars shining in her eyes, the Venenum strokes the top of the specimen box. "You've practically funded my research for a century, maybe mooooore!"

...Right. Okay.

Um. About Valnikov, then...?

"Ah, yes!" Madaraki nods, placing the specimen box somewhere inside her coat, and then takes out what appears to be an envelope, which she passes over to you. Just by picking it up, you feel that some kind of coin is inside - and you take it out to give it a look.

It's a normal silver coin, but stamped with the roman numerals XIII.

"Valnikov Ekaterina is being held at Casino Town. It is heavily guarded and only those who hold that token can freely enter or leave it, as well as people rich enough to place bets in the Blood God's Arena. You will find her there, I think."

The Blood God's Arena?

"Magical Girl fighting circuit. It is...unofficial tournament scene, where rich people bet on which Magical Girl dies in combat first. Very violent, very...unsavory." The blonde Venenum shakes her head, a frown on her face. "I find such a place reprehensible and wroooong. It goes against everything I swore an oath for." She swallows audibly. "And Valnikov Ekaterina, she is one of the participants in today's card. Which is in one hour, I think..."

...Shit. Okay. That means you need to get a move on. Alright, can she give you directions to it? And possibly anything else she can give you to help stealing into that place?

"Of...of course. I will do anything I can..." Comes the faint reply, and you look back up at Madaraki. It's here, then, you realize that her upbeat mood has all but evaporated, leaving behind nothing but...melancholy, it looks like.

Or guilt.

"I...I, Miss Malaaal, please understand." It's here that the Professor's voice begins to tremble, more than it usually did. "We are an Officio that tries to make a better place. We do not perform experiments...oooon unwilling subjects. Only on...ourselves, and those who pay for them in the first place."

You stare at her, silently.

"Miss Malaaaal, I am....I am sooorry. I apologize for my Officio's sake." She lowers her head for a moment, before looking up, tears in her eyes. "Your Ekaterina is my Warmaster's...personal captive. She has been performing expeeeeriments on her. The wrong kind of experiments..."

And slowly, painfully, with all the catharsis of a long-postponed confession or the lancing of a boil left to fester - the Venenum known as Professor Madaraki began to tell you about what the Warmaster of the Thirteenth had been doing to Valnikov Ekaterina.

Experimentation, she called it. The worst kind - with the subject first restrained, to break her will; then tortured, to break her body; and finally sedated, to break her mind. Creating a blind, numb and soulless shell that could not even fight against what was to be done with her.

And that was the part that would hurt the least.

What came next...you couldn't even fathom how someone sane could have thought of it. From what you could understand from Madaraki's tearful account, the Thirteenth Warmaster had turned Ekaterina into a monster. Something about making specific parts of a Magical Girl's body turn into terrifying weapons by grafting corrupted witch-flesh onto them, as well as onto their Soul Gems.

The Thirteenth Warmaster was trying to create the perfect symbiosis between Witch and Magical Girl - a perfect union between the two eternally-warring states, of what is and what is to become. And somehow, she had decided that Ekaterina was the perfect candidate for this. A rookie Vindicare, barely out of basic training.

You asked her if it could be reversed, if what their Warmaster did to Ekaterina could be healed somehow. Madaraki mournfully shook her head. Perhaps her mind could be saved, and her Soul Gem purified - but to get Ekaterina back to what she was, before the procedure? Impossible. She had been changed irrevocably. Valnikov Ekaterina would have to live - and die - with what had been wrought upon her.

By the time she finished, the blonde Venenum's eyes were red from all the crying. You couldn't cry - you were much too angry to. Too angry about what had been done to Ekaterina - and you promised her dying mother that you would take care of her.

[1/2]
>>
>>28337777

Ekaterina, you say quietly, hoarsely.

"M-Miss Malal...?"

Her name is Ekaterina, you growl at her. Not the subject, or the patient.

Ekaterina.

The blonde Venenum nods. "A-ah. Yes. I..." She shakes her head. "....Miss Malal, I have to tell you, she may not...recognize you when you rescue her. She may attack you if she sees you, or even try to kill you. My Warmaster has seen to that."

Ngh. You weren't expecting this. You didn't plan for this at all.

...Who is her Warmaster, anyway? Who's the chucklefuck who decided that experimenting on Magical Girls, especially those of other Officios, was a good idea in the first place?

"Strauss," Madaraki murmurs. "Herr Doktor Emma Strauss."

Jesus. Even her name sounds evil.

What do you do now?

The blonde Venenum nods, taking something from the inside of her coat again. It's a silver case, similar to the one that she kept your blood samples in. This she slides across the table to you. It's a compact hypogun, with four glass ampoules - each one full of gleaming silver liquid.

"I anticipated such a request, Miss Malal, and made my own personal formulation before our meeting today. One doses is enough to put three Witches to sleep. Two doses, they will be comatose for an entire year. Three will...make their sleep endless. They will never wake up."

...Yeah, okay. That's something to think about.

You slip the entire thing into your inventory, before standing up. Well, anyway. There's no time to dawdle. You should get going to Casino Town.

"Ah, I see...I...I wish I could be of more help, Miss Malal." The Professor stands up again, shakily and with obvious effort. "Please, take care--"

What? What's she talking about?

"E-eh? I'm..." Madaraki smiles, uncertainly. "I am wishing Miss Malaaaal...would take care on her rescue, and--"

No. You're not going alone. She's going with you.

If there was any way for the pale Venenum to grow paler, she would have at that moment. "N-no. No, Miss Malal. I...I cannot. Please, I know you are angry with me, but do not force me to go in that hell again." She shakes her head. "C-call me a coward, or a weakling if you wish, but I cannot go back there. I need to return to our ship, to..."

To what? You snarl at her, making her shrink back. To hide?

[1/2]
>>
>>28338380

"N-no. To...to do what I should have done a long time agoooo, Miss Malal." The Venenum all too nearly collapses to the floor as she tries to move forward, but she is able to support herself with both hands on the table.

"I return to our ship to...lead the ousting of our Warmaster, Emma Strauss. While she is still here, I will show everyone in my Officio what she has been doing...and we will elect a new one in her stead. Someone who will never resort to this kind of butchery again." She looks up at you. "That is my aim, here. I know I have not given you any reason to believe me, but...please, that is what I need to do."

It's here, then, that she seems to get an idea. "I...I may be able to help you still, even if I am not around." She takes something again from her coat - it's her personal identification and keycard, this time, attached to a clip.

She pushes it into your gloved hand. "Use this to enter the Arena's lower levels. That is where Strauss will be holding the patient--er, Valnikov, in preparation for her fight. Look for a young man named Souji - brown hair, looks unreliable, and has his nose always in a porno book. He is my personal assistant, and he may be able to help you sneak Valnikov out before the card even starts."

Hnh. That's...that's handy.

Couldn't she have given it to you earlier, instead of the coin? This would have helped a lot.

"I..." Madaraki shakes her head. "I should have, shouldn't I...? B-but I suppose I was still not comfortable with the idea of...betraying my Warmaster." She lets out a tremulous sigh. "M-maybe they will start calling me the Betrayer when all is said and done, huh...?"

How do you react?

You blink at her, before shaking your head. ...If there's anyone who deserves that title, it's Strauss, not Madaraki. She was the one who betrayed the Thirteenth by going into something she wasn't supposed to.

"...I do not really know what my Warmaster was thinking. She was...brilliant, before. I still believe she is, now, but not in this way. Not like this." The blonde venenum shakes her head, before managing a smile.

"Thank you, Miss Malaaal. I am...I will remember this as a debt to you. The Thirteenth will always be in your debt, and I will make sure none of us will ever forget it."

It's here that she glances up towards the ceiling. "Xerxes! Come down from there, we are leaving! Bring Odette aaaand her things, we will need to be quick!"

...What? Xerxes was up on the ceiling all along? You look up as well, following Madaraki's gaze. What kind of bodyguard is that--

"SKREEEEEK." The THING that slowly unsticks itself from the ceiling chirps - almost melodically - as it lowers its appendages to the floor.

It's a...it's a giant fleshy starfish thing, that's the only way you can describe it. Big enough to devour a full-grown man, and harangue an entire dormitory full of schoolgirls.

"KREEEEK." It chirps again, this time at you, and slips a tentacle under the table to take the heavy suitcase placed there, along with what looks like a Hello Kitty backpack. Madaraki reaches out with a hand to pet the encumbered tentacle, before nodding at the creature itself, which then slithers past you to get to the entrance.

"DO not worry, Xerxes is harmless. He is a sweetheart." The Venenum smiles, just as Odette herself starts to shriek.

Before you can say anything else, though, she catches you in a hug once more. "I will pray to the Blessed Lady for your success," she murmurs into your ear, before letting go and limping away where Xerxes had gone.

You sink down on your chair and resist the idea of pulling off your helmet and just...ugh. You don't even know.

In pretty much the last hour or so, you found out that the girl you're supposed to save and bring back to base may not be herself anymore, and has a good chance of killing you before you could even touch her.

You wonder, then, if she's still worth saving. If she's still going to factor into the things you planned, in the things you dreamed about.

...Of course she is, you spit at yourself. It shouldn't even have to be asked. Whether or not she fits in the grand scheme of things, you are not leaving her here to die.

You're better than that.

= =

You manage to reach Casino Town in perfect time after that, and with the coin's help, you score not only entry but a secure parking spot for Schpeltiger. And Casino Town looked just like what its name implied - it's the gambling part of the city, where neon lights shone blinding, electric colors as far as the eye can see. Strip clubs, motels, casinos...hell, the entire town is a fucking casino. The inhabitants look fit for the role, too - some of them eagle-eyed shysters looking for the next sucker, others looking broken and bankrupt, sunken eyes contemplating suicide.

You ignore all of these and head straight for the Blood God's Arena - and it's not exactly hard to find. Right in the very middle of the town, it looks like someone took Mitakihara Stadium and gave it horns. And skulls. And today's card - which is thirty minutes from now - is advertised quite prominently on its outward-facing walls.

The Blessed Lady's Champion versus The Butcher, the garish banner read.

(Chapter 1: http://pastebin.com/xjkhycZG )

This operation had started out a mess. During the initial stages of the invasion plan, sneak through the confusion of the front lines. Proceed to kill or capture an unknown number of enemy magical girls, eliminate potential witnesses, and return as quietly as they came. There were countless uncertainties, but they had done the best they could.

It was lucky, then, that the enemy had no Culexus countermeasures. Were they inexperienced, or was their spy to thank for that? Either way, if they had allowed the Second to reinforce this position, things would have become difficult. As it was, it was entirely one-sided.

The Culexus designated as Paria was very effective at what she did, and what she did was subjugate enemy magical girls.

She finished checking the captured children. They were all terrified and hated her, as expected, but none of them started convulsing or lost consciousness. Not because of her, at least. None of the Seventh's girls had tried to blend in with the crowd.

It was unfortunate for the citizens of Lanehen that their orders were so thorough. The Hexenjaeger company, like everything to do with magic, was a state secret. Even rumors would cause Dieter no end of paperwork and headaches. For being in the wrong place at the wrong time, the people of Lanehen had no future.

Be that as it may, there was a silver lining to everything. If she hadn't come on this mission, she never would have found this lovely red dress. It was a mystery what such nice clothing was doing in a backwater town like this, displayed so prominently in the window of the town's tailor. It might have bothered her, once, to step over two corpses to get her spoils of war.

“All done here, you can start the fire anytime! Gonna go check out the rest of town!” The sergeant idly nodded, not looking away from his work. Their prisoners had been separated from their soul gems, and their vacant bodies piled ungracefully on the back of a truck. Not the ideal setup, but they were traveling light.

There wasn't much left to do here, really, but she could go help Dieter with whatever he was doing.

Strolling up the fenced path to the town proper, a soldier she didn't recognize turned around the bend, abruptly stopping in front of her. His fists were clenched- he must not be used to her presence yet. Being what she was, non-magical observers felt an instinctual hatred toward her. It was a testament to their training that a stray bullet hadn't taken her out long ago.

“M-ma'am! We're in battle with an enemy Eversor! The captain says to come at once!”

She focused, expanding her field of her power toward the town, probing. It didn't take long to find the target, wildly burning through her magical energy. Was she wounded, or struggling?

“Relax, it feels like they've already subdued her. There's no rush.” She beckoned for the young man to walk with her. She took a closer look at him.

“If I know my insignias, you're a new recruit? How did you end up with the Hexenjaegers?” She had few enough chances to socialize, so she tried to be friendly to the soldiers that would humor her.

“My little sister contracted. I found out, and the next day the captain showed up. He said I'd been drafted. I don't think I could have refused.”
“Sounds like he did you quite a favor. The Thirteenth doesn't mess around when it comes to leaks.”
“I think I'm starting to realize that, ma'am.” He dragged his foot to wipe blood off of his boot.
“You ever get another chance to talk to your sister?” A change of topic was in order.
“They haven't let me meet her since that night.” No luck with this topic, either.
“I see...” As far as she knew, there was no rule against it, now that he was in on the big secret. The sister must have felt guilty for getting him involved in all of this.

The path ended, and they reached the town. Captain Dieter Gris was waiting for them, cleaning his Walther P38 as he leaned against a wall. He was a sharp-looking man, especially in his black leather coat.

“Nice of you to join us.” He seemed annoyed. More than usual, that is.
The soldier snapped to a salute. “I brought her, sir.”
“Were you delayed?” He didn't seem that interested in the response. His attention was focused on her. She shifted uncomfortably under his gaze.
“Is this a problem?” Not seeing the prisoner, she guessed where this was going.
Dieter turned his attention to the soldier again. “Miss Paria is not your commanding officer. I am. Return to your squad.” The soldier saluted again and did so, eager to get away.

“She escaped, then?” She hated looking bad in front of him.
“Yeah. Another showed up, with a bow. Four dead, one wounded.”
“Ah, jeez, all my fault for being lazy. Sorry.” She was sorry, though perhaps not as sorry as she should be.
He ignored this. “I watched them meet up with a third girl. We'll have to pursue them.” He sounded tired. At this point, they just wanted the mission to be over.

(3/13)
>>
>>28339437
Dieter had spoken about their losses in a clinical tone, but she knew he deep down, no matter how many terrible things he did, part of him was an idealist. Logic told him deaths were unavoidable with their swarm tactics, but he was never able to accept that. It worried her, but it was also what she liked most about him. She had failed him this time, but he would never blame her, only himself. Having non-magical friends like him made this curse bearable.

“It could be worse. Rolt could have come along.” The company's other captain would have enjoyed the slaughter too much. Her joke was in poor taste, but got a slight, sad smile out of him.

“I suppose we should start right away. Most of the men will head back with our prisoners and wounded. You, me, and a couple squads will pursue. I'll give the orders.” He made to leave, before turning back.

“And what's with the dress?”
“Oh! I found it here!” She smiled mischievously and did a dramatic twirl to show it off. “Don't I look great?”
“Yeah.” He turned away and kept walking. She had hoped he would sound more sincere...

---

Claire awkwardly kept pace behind Mireille and Amy, walking carefully on the uneven ground of the thick forest. Amy held a lantern out in front of them. They hadn't been walking for long, but the sounds of the fire in town were already distant.

Mireille's occasional reassuring grins in Claire's direction were the only acknowledgment they even remembered her presence. She had been swept up in a lot of events tonight, and had just gone along with the flow, but she had questions. Lots of questions. If her new companions wouldn't address the elephant in the room, she would.

“So, uh, what's going on?”

Amy let out a tired sigh, and Mireille turned around, managing to walk backwards on the difficult terrain.“I guess this is a little overwhelming to you, huh. How much did the Seventh tell you?”

(4/13)

>>
>>28339449
Telling her what she knew about magical girls and witches, Mireille relaxed a little and gave a wry smile. “That makes this a little easier, then. Girls have contracted without knowing what witches really are. Always rough. The Seventh's too much of a softie, though!”

“As for what happened back there...” Folding her hands behind her back, she looked like a child preparing to be scolded. “It's kind of a long story. Um, so magical girls don't always get along...”

“That boarding house was a cover, wasn't it? And the Germans came looking for you?” She could put the pieces together. She should be furious, but she couldn't bring herself to be angry at the girl. There was too much she needed to learn from her.

“Yeah, they did.” Her constant cheerfulness was gone for a moment. “We could have put our base anywhere. We thought Lanehen would be overlooked. You all just had bad luck.”

The mood was heavy. In a way, Claire was surprised at her own resilience. Her parents were dead, and her only feelings were a simmering anger toward the culprits.

It was a minute before she could bring herself to ask her next question.

“And what was that thing in town? The Culexus?”
Amy answered. “Culexus are the chosen of the Blessed Lady. To find ourselves against one is an ill omen.” Very cryptic. Mireille looked at Claire and shrugged a little. Amy continued, being much more straightforward. “They control an anti-magic field. Bad news if you're magical.”

Mireille briefly explained the classifications.
“So you're a Vindicare, then?”
“Ehehe, everyone thinks that.” She stuck out her tongue a little. “I'm actually a Callidus. The bow isn't my magic.”

Claire could almost see the lightbulb go off in her head. “Oh! That reminds me! We still need to introduce ourselves!” At this, they all stopped walking. Amy turned around to face them, momentarily blinding Claire with the lantern.

(5/13)
>>
>>28339468
“I'm Mireille Linois! I've been a magical girl for a while now, contracted to the Seventh, like you!” She started stretching her arms. “I was in Lanehen with Aveline's gang, but I've been out of town for a while, escorting Amy here. Just got home and saw the attack.”

Claire looked expectantly over at Amy, who lowered the lantern a bit. “My name is Amelia Brynn. Initiate of the Black Templars, and of the Eversor rank.” With a touch of annoyance, she quickly added “We're an order contracted to the Second Incubator in London. We're at war with the Thirteenth, and I was here as an envoy to formalize our alliance.” She looked at Claire expectantly.

“Claire Roux. I just made a contract back in the village. Where are we going? We do have a goal, right?”

They started walking again. Mireille grabbed a small apple off a tree as they passed by it. “Oh, that's easy. Amy hid her motorcycle around here somewhere. We caught wind of the attack as we approached town and wanted a stealthy approach.” She took a large bite, wrinkled her face in disgust, and threw it into the foliage.

“And then?”

Amy turned her head, looking back at her. “We're heading back to my order's temporary base in Dunkirk. I need to warn my sister about what happened here...” She jerked her head to indicate Mireille. “...she's tagging along, and you have nowhere else to go.”

“There it is. Behind those bushes.” Mireille pointed, and Claire squinted to make it out. It was painted black, and Claire was happy to see it had a sidecar.

Amy ran ahead and led the bike toward them. “We'll have to throw away the tea to make room for her.” She reached into the sidecar and pulled out a crate.
Mireille waved it away. “They don't need it anymore.” Setting it in the bushes, Amy straddled the bike, grumbling as Mireille hopped on and nuzzled up against her back.

It still looked like an uncomfortable fit. Much of the leg room was filled by a large metal box. Embossed letters on the side identified it as a radio receiver.

Sitting down, she saw Mireille's eyes grow wide. “Wait, wait, wait!” She pointed at the broach on Claire's collar. “Your soul gem is in pretty bad shape! Just how reckless were you back there?”

“What? I was-”

She was cut off as Amy whirled around and snatched it, holding it out and studying it warily. Having seen it for the first time since she transformed, Mireille was indeed right- a malignant darkness was swirling, clawing at what remained of the crimson light she had seen earlier.

Amy gave a grunt. “You're fine for now, but no magic until we can find you a grief seed.” She threw the broach back, and started fiddling with the bike as she talked to herself. “It's risky to wait until camp, we might need to find a witch along the way...”

Mireille looked ponderous as she spoke. “Margaret might help us. Her territory isn't too far from here. If she's not out hunting for witches, she has a home near Sedan.”
“That's where the town did most of its trading.”
Mireille nodded, but seemed uncertain about something.

Amy brought the engine sputtering to life, roughly riding across the terrain, and they set off southeast, no closer to safety in Dunkirk.

Until she was sitting down, she hadn't realized just how exhausted she was. She fell into a deep sleep in the cramped sidecar of Amy's Norton.

Claire had never seen Sedan quite like this. To call the atmosphere tense was an understatement. Most of the citizens had up and left. A few soldiers loitered around town, their main force not far away, apparently building up their defense along the Meuse river. They looked in even poorer spirits than the townsfolk.

Before getting to town, a feeling of self-consciousness had come over Claire, her costume caked with dried blood. Releasing the transformation, her original clothes returned, still torn and muddied. Mireille flipped her a few francs, and the three agreed to meet up later.

Familiar with the town, she made a beeline to buy new clothes, hoping the shop was open. The jolly old man who ran it was a family friend, and had always kept close business relations with her father. It wasn't until she saw the bearded man looking up from his book that she had second thoughts.

“Claire!? What happened to your clothes?” Time to think fast- this was going to make her feel guilty. She didn't have it in her to tell him the truth.
“I tripped and took a pretty bad fall on the way to town. I'm not hurt, but I'm afraid I need to buy new clothes.”
“Buy?” He gave a warm chuckle. “I wouldn't charge you for this! Is your father in town, too? It's been forever!” That tugged her heartstrings hard. She hoped it would be many years before he got a chance to catch up with him.
“I'm sorry to say that you may not see him for a long time. We're heading west, trying to avoid the fighting. They sent me to town for supplies.”
This hit him hard, and suddenly he looked his age. “And he didn't even come to say goodbye?” His voice dropped to a sad whisper, and his gaze fell away from her. “He was always afraid of this. It may be the right move, getting out of here. But I can't leave my shop... it's all I have left.”

She didn't have anything to say to that.

His eyes met hers again, and he gave a sad smile. “I'm glad you came by. I still have some of the clothes you made for me in return for that nice bolt of red silk.”

---

His last words to her echoed guiltily. “You take care of yourself, Claire.” Was that really what she was doing?

Thirty minutes later, she was the first of the three to reach the agreed meeting place. The riverbank north of town.

Leaning to look over the river, she thought about the last fifteen hours. Where would she be at this time next week? It sounded like Amy's order was the enemy or her enemy. Could Claire fight with them? She found herself thinking about battle with a frequency that would have disturbed her old self. Was that part of being a magical girl, or was revenge just a way of coping with loss?

Amy sauntered up in few minutes, having found fuel. After demanding to see her soul gem again, they stood in silence. With her hood down, she looked surprisingly unassuming. Her brown hair was slightly curly and stopped at her ears, while her face managed to be simultaneously haughty and miserable.

Maybe twenty minutes later, Mireille came back, scratching her head as she ran up. “Ha! Sorry for the wait! I was grilling some soldiers for info!”

Margaret lived about a mile north of town. As they made their way, Mireille filled them in on what she had learned. The Wehrmacht hadn't made a move on France, yet, but much of the French forces had moved to Belgium. This portion of the border was being held by one unsupported infantry regiment. Claire wasn't sure what that meant, but the way the two were talking about it, it didn't sound promising.

They arrived at a humble, comfortable-looking wooden cottage. “Margaret's a real traditionalist. Lives alone and hunts witches. Said we'd never be able to support so many girls in the same area, and that fighting other magical girls didn't earn us grief seeds. In the end, though, she was always willing to lend us a hand. Helped set us up here, actually!”

Their knock on the door was met by silence. Nothing was moving inside. Mireille knocked again, louder, but Amy moved to a window. Seeing the curtains drawn, she picked a good-sized rock off the ground.

“Don't! There's no need to-” Amy didn't seem to be listening, as she smashed the rock through a tall window, shattering the glass. As she stormed through the window frame, she tore the curtain out, along with its rod. Claire giggled a little at the thrill of it, following her inside.

The moment she did, a sickening scent assaulted her nostrils. Amy's eyes were focused on the far side of the room. Claire looked over, and started gagging. That must have been Margaret, decaying on a fluffy chair near the fireplace. Her dirty blonde hair looked like straw, and her clothes were eerily similar to Claire's own.

There was a click and the door opened. “So is-” Mireille entered and noticed. “Whoa!” Claire ran out past her, hoping to get outside before she emptied her stomach.

As she finished, she overheard the conversation inside.

“One bad thing after another, huh?”
“She has no injuries, no soul gem, and her body is decaying. She's a witch.”
“I can't find her spare grief seeds. We'll have to hurry back to Dunkirk, before-”
“Don't worry. We'll have one after we beat the witch.”

Mireille strolled out, with an uncharacteristic scowl. “You make it sound so easy. Its body has been decaying for days. It could be anywhere by now.” She crossed her arms.

Its body? Were fallen magical girls so easily forgotten?

Amy rapidly glanced around as she walked past them. All they could see was her back. “Finding it IS easy. Witches are drawn to negative emotions. Why would it want to leave this town?”

Mireille's fingers impatiently tapped the quiver at her waist. “So you want us to wander blindly around this powder keg until a war breaks out?”

Amy jerked her head back to face them. The huge smile on her face would have looked more at home on the other girl. In her cupped hand was a dark blue soul gem, pulsing wildly in a cyclical rhythm. “I don't think we'll need to!”

Mireille cursed and made to grab her bow, and Claire clambered to her feet.

Before they knew it, the forest, the cabin, and the sound of the river had disappeared. A new reality was swallowing them up, forming around them.

---

They were in a clearing, surrounded by an endless field of golden wheat that swayed gently in the wind. In the horizon, countless windmills turned wildly, framed by a blood red sky. In the center of the clearing was the witch- it could be nothing else. An enormous, bone white egg was surrounded by writhing vines, obsidian and covered in thorns.

Mireille readied an arrow, and Claire readied herself to transform, but Amy threw out her arm, as if to block them.

“You two conserve your magic. This is my duty. I may be an Initiate, but I am a Black Templar.” The tone of her voice didn't allow for much argument. Not waiting for a response she walked forward, a fierce look in her eyes. She was still in her faded black cloak, untransformed, and seemingly unarmed.

The vines abruptly stopped all movement. Starting at the center, a white shimmer ran down them, and the tip of each slowly turned toward Amy. They seemed to appraise her for a moment, before all shooting toward her. A split second later, there was an explosion of dirt where Amy had been standing, a dozen heavy vines having struck at the same time. Bits of them snapped off as they hit the ground, obsidian shrapnel spraying out.

But Amy was already in the air, her cloak fluttering. The stone tendrils retracted, and flew toward her. Claire was momentarily worried about how she would dodge in the air, but a large maul materialized in Amy's hands. It looked to be made of iron, and had deep blue sapphires socketed in its grip.

There was a sequence of loud metallic noises as Amy hit away each tendril, shattering them. She hit the ground with her legs bent, and dashed toward the giant egg. More vines surged her, but she dodged to the side each time. As she got near, one swept from the side at her feet, but she pushed off the ground and flew over it, high in the air.

At the height of her jump, the hammer in her hands glowed with a blinding blue light. As Claire looked again, the hammer had grown many times in size. The head was almost comically large, easily dwarfing Amy herself. It was a solid iron slab, perfectly rectangular, but the size of a small tank. She tilted the enormous socketed grip down, and gravity did its work.

The remaining vines quickly retracted and coiled into a shield. It was nowhere near enough to stop the immense power behind the ridiculous weapon. The barrier was pulverized, and the hammer's descent continued into the defenseless shell of the egg.

>>28339553
It didn't just crack, it was violently smashed open with a sickening squelching. A sea of thick, gooey blood poured out, quickly covering the field. A quivering mass of flesh rested where the egg was, spotted with bits of decay. A beak pointed out of it, near a wildly spinning bloodshot eye.

The wheat in the field joyfully danced in the wind as it drank heavily of the liquid on the ground. The windmills slowly came to a halt, all at once, as the remains of the embryo stopped its twitching, ending its death throes.

The world around them dissolved, returning them to the deserted cabin. Amy, not showing any sign that she cared about being drenched and covered in bits of what seemed like curdled blood, reached down to pick up a pitch black stone, surrounded by a cage of pointed metal.

“Here's your grief seed, Claire.” She carelessly tossed it at her, like an afterthought.

Was this the fate that awaited them all?

It was all so absurd. She couldn't help but burst out laughing. And once she started, it was hard to stop.
