This is a one shot quest I just made up on the spot, so adjust expectations accordingly. If there's strong interest maybe I'll do another one?

"Each nucleotide contains three parts: a phosphate group, a sugar molecule, and one of four bases. Adenine, guanine, cytosine, or thymine. The sugar phosphate bonds form the double backbone of the molecule, but it is in the nitrogen containing bases that we are interested in. While the basic pairings never change, the order of the pairs vary wildly between species. This is why we call DNA the building block of all life on earth. Why one could even say it is-"

Fucking boring. Lifting your head up and surveying the auditorium you see you aren't alone in the sentiment. A sea of hungover undergraduates fiddling with their tablets stretches off as far as the eye can see. You stop paying attention to the professor entirely and begin tapping the answers to today's lecture assignment into your tablet as rapidly as you can. Who doesn't know this stuff after all? You finish up with the remedial exercise in less than five minutes and ready it for submission. It's rather poor form skipping classes this early in the semester but sitting here and listening to this for another hour would be criminal. Besides, you've got places to be.

You quickly scroll through the list and select your name.

"DEVEGA, FELICIA"

Running out the door you hurry across the quad towards the community center. The usual assortment of soap box loonies are there spouting off about Marxism, the whales, equal rights, and all that. Today's there's some off campus types, fundies by the look of them, holding a giant papier mache cross and screaming at passing students who desperately pretend not to notice them.

"If a man lies with an animal, he shall surely be put to death, and you shall kill the animal! If a woman approaches any animal and lies with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them!" The old man is turning beet red with fury as he points a bony finger accusingly at each passing student. "Beware you who would put dare to question the plan of the almighty! For you are treading in the garden of an angry god!"

As if nobody has anything better to do than listen to this nonsense. You steer a wide path around the ranting jeremiad. Another day another shitstorm. Your little detour ran you into construction and now you're winding your way through a maze of road blocks. Perfect. Checking your watch you double time it off campus and down the road. It occurs to you that you haven't eaten since breakfast, no good. Spotting the local Starbucks you veer off to pick something up quick. Maybe if Elsa is working today she can get you the usual and you'll be out the door in time for....

Not with your luck. There's a new girl working the counter, and a clade at that. Tall, thin, piercing eyes, and long white hair punctuated by two ears on the top of her head. Her barista's uniform hangs awkwardly off her unnaturally lithe frame, only adding to the general air of incongruity she has about her. As you approach the register she stops fidgeting with her apron and suddenly pops her head up.

"Welcome to Starbucks, what can I get you!" she chirps in the kind of cloyingly enthusiastic tone reserved for clades and low wage service workers. You mull it over in your head. Coffee? Croissant? It's odd to see one of them out here, especially a cat. You thought they usually stuck to the cities where the jobs are. You know there's a few of them registered on campus but none of them take classes with you. Wonder if she's even a student.

"Miss, your order?" She smiles disingenuously as one of her ears twitches.

You receive your order and scurry away as quickly as you can. You're late after all, or so you tell yourself. Inhaling your cookies as you go you make a mad dash for the center and get in just in time.

Finally arriving at the gymnasium you quickly change and head for the mats. You start with some basic tumbling routines. If anything they keep getting harder as your age progresses but the feeling never goes away. Away from the classes, the family, the boys, the job. Just you and the mat. The endless quest for perfection. Not that you're anywhere close to perfect but after ten years of practice you're far from clumsy either. After spending a few hours you finish off with a few elaborate vaulting routines and hit the showers. It feels like all the bullshit and trouble of the day has melted away. Little exercise always does you good. You check the clock on the locker room wall. Still a few hours before you need to turn in. You could hit the town if you wanted.

You decide to hit the book store and pick up a few novels at the mall while you have the chance. It's a bit chilly, but otherwise nice. The streets are covered in the gold and red carpet of mid autumn. Likewise the walls are all plastered with the signage of election season. Most prominent are the endless rows of "YES ON 21" broadsides that adorn the windows of various shops. People are certainly getting less shy about their opinions. You've never really cared much about politics before, concerning the country in general or clades in particular. All you want is to go to your classes, read your books, be left alone. You imagine that's all they want too.

You find the store and browse for some time. After some time you notice the shop keep giving you dirty looks and settle on a few pulp fantasy volumes. Exiting the store you notice it's already dark. You really shouldn't have spent so long. Now you'll have to-

"Get AWAY from me!" you here a voice echo out of the darkness. By the sound of it, it was coming from an alley nearby.

>Wat do Felicia?

No time to think. you quickly shoulder your bag and run towards the alley cursing your foolishness even as you go. It's bad enough you're out here alone without so much as a rape whistle, and now you're rushing head first in to trouble? Not like you Felicia, not like you at all.

The scene that greets you is every bit as unpromising as you feared. A clade girl is trapped at the end of the alley behind two rather drunk looking local men. The woman flattens her ears and hisses threateningly at the two large men. You're sure it was meant to be intimidating, but it only succeeds in eliciting howling laughter from the toughs.

"Kittens got claws!" guffaws one. "Come on darling, play nice and we won't hurt you."

She woman tries to back away farther but quickly runs out of alley. Her hands touch the brick and she realizes her mistake too late. For a moment, you hesitate. Is this really worth getting involved in? Who's she to you? Why should you even care?

"HEY ASSHOLES, BACK OFF." Was.... was that you? The men turn around, alarmed by your yelling, but their panic quickly fades as yours rises in turn.

"We're just having some fun with our friend here. Blow girlie, unless you want to join us?"

>Nothing for it now, fight or flight Felicia?

You feel a familiar rage bubbling up inside you. Who does this clown think he is? Ever since you were little people have been making fun of you. For being too shy, for being too tall, for not fitting in. In the old days you would have found a nice big tree to hide behind and cry. But things are different now. You're an adult, you're strong, and these assholes are already three sheets to the wind. You can take them.

The thought occurs that we could just step out of the alley, and make a show of how it would be so very very easy to call attention to them. Maybe while getting the camera-phone out. Even if they think some might not defend the situation, it wouldn't be hard to attract a lot of people over here.

You get a running start down the hallway and swing your book loaded bag off into one hand. The grit and gravel of the alleyway are nothing like the practice mat at the gym, but you manage to keep your footing and build impressive momentum down the long corridor. The man squares his feet and prepares to a charge that never comes. Pivoting at the last moment you swing the backpack up and over in a wide arcing blow that catching the man square below the jaw.

He goes reeling backwards into girl, who takes the opportunity to rake at his face with her claws.

You casually sidestep the hay maker and trip the man. He goes sprawling into the dirt with his friend.

"Had enough?" you gloat with uncharacteristic bravado. The men simply grimace before dusting themselves off and hurrying back onto the main roads.

"I am SO SORRY I never meant to get you involved in any of this thank you so much please don't make a big deal of it or anything." The poor young woman ramblesas she feverishly tries to gather up her scattered belongings. Getting a good look at her for the first time you're stunned. It's the girl from the Starbucks. Regrettably, we have no video evidence, and there's a good possibility the police will just ignore an assault against a minority person if they're not forced into it.

I'm not certain what the level of discrimination is, but the original thread suggests it might range up to Jim Crow-level discrimination.
>>
>>28258616
Well, we did note it was a bit surprising to see her there before, so presumably there aren't so many Clades hereabouts.
And those asses were making it a big deal. They deserve a hell of a lot more than just getting chased off after a trip, but they're not worth any more trouble either.
And we should probably at least help her gather her things. If we figure Clades want the same things we do, then observe a few simple courtesies, is all.
>>
>>28258759
Truth, but it doesn't hurt trying, and unless they throw us out it'll at least be on record somewhere.

In any case, we should stay with her and help her get dusted off etc. Maybe get a cab.

"It was my pleasure, I've been putting up with assholes like them my whole life. Here, let me help you with that. We'll get you sorted and then call the police." You reach down for one of the books as you speak but a clawed hands snatches it away before you can get a look.

"NO. I mean uh.... there's no need for that. It would only cause trouble and really nothing happened so there's no point in filing a report. Thank you again though! I'll be sure to be more careful next time!" She jams the rest of her belongings into a bag and bolts away towards the street.

"Wait a minute at least take your..... bag." You're left holding the small black backpack, feeling like a fool again. It's not so strange you supposed. Clades and the police haven't been on the best terms since the riots so it's only natural she'd be scared. Shame though, it's never going to get better for them if they keep knuckling under like this. You toy with the bag. There might be some contact info inside that you could use to deliver her things to her, but on the other hand it isn't yours and it seems a bit rude to rifle through somebody else's things.

You toy with the drawstring on the satchel. Surely if it were to help return her items..... but no. You've always been fiercely protective of your own privacy. Besides, you know where she works. You'll just return them tomorrow. You pack up your things and prepare to head home. No point in calling the police if she's not prepared to testify. the cops would only come out and take a look around, say they'll be nearby if you need them. The same way they always did....

You shake your head and prepare to set out. As you start down the alley something odd catches your eye. The light of a passing car reflects briefly into windows of an apartment. There is a man in the window, with a pair of binoculars, watching you. For a split second your eyes meet. He's watching you. You know he is. He knows you know. Before you can think any further about it the car passes and the man fades back into shadow.

It's time for the shaky camera and dramatic chase that ends with you throwing him out a window
>>
>>28259111
Get a read on the window, find the address and record it, just like in the "What to do if you are being stalked" book says.
>>
>>28259111
This is now two instances where a gun would have been helpful, guess we will need to track him down and teach him booksack dual wielding.

You put on a brave smile and wave into the now black window to let whoever it is know you see him. Nothing stirs in the apartment. You decide to hurry on before the usual, frightened, Felicia decides to return. The rest of the night is, blessedly, uneventful. You make it home and fall into bed. Trouble. Nothing but trouble. You've never stuck up for yourself, let alone anybody else. Why did you do it this time? You don't have anything against clades, but you never much cared about them either. When the politicians talked about segregated settlements you even thought it might be ok. So much quieter, so much easier, for everybody. No fights, no riots, no murders. Is that such a bad thing to want? The night's events go round and round in your head, replaying themselves endlessly in turn. You finally drift off into a shallow, troubled sleep.

Morning. You spring out of bed and get ready. Shower, brush teeth, breakfast, clothes. You make the trek to campus with unusual speed and head straight for the Starbucks. Heading in you put on your biggest smile and hold up the bag..... to a young pimply man at the register.

"Uh... is there a young woman... working today." So much for last night's bravery. The man looks at you like you have a degenerative brain mutation.

"Probably. Who you looking for?"

"She's tall, Silver hair, a... cat clade?" You finally circle in on the relevant detail

"Oh you mean Abby. Yea she didn't come in today, which is why I'm stuck covering her shift.", he grumbles. "But then that's what you'd expect of..... teenagers."

>What now?
>>
>>28259397
"She left her bag with me. Do you happen to know how to contact her so I can return it?"

I get the suspicion that by "teenagers", he meant "clades"; might not be a good idea to leave her bag with this guy.
>>
>>28259397
I have her stuff, you got a number or something?
>>
>>28259397
I dont imagine you can get me her contact info? I wouldnt mind checking up on her, for both of our sakes.

"Um, do you have a number or address I can reach her at? I have her bag". You flash a hesitant smile to punctuate your good intentions. The man mulls your words, clearly pained by this imposition on his otherwise productive and no doubt important existence.

"I can't just give away employee information like that, regulations and stuff you know. Unless you can get her mom or something." He looks up and stares, clearly expecting a response.

>He clearly doesn't care that much either way....

Oh I'm sorry of course. I'm Abby's big sister. It's just... she left her books at my apartment yesterday and I don't have her new address to deliver them to her. She'll just go crazy if she doesn't find them." You lean in conspiratorially and whisper. "She can be a touch temperamental you know."

You can see the thoughts working their way through his tiny brain before his expression finally slackens.

"Yea sure, I remember it because she just got her contact info to us yesterday, late I might add. If you see her tell her she's lucky to have so many people to cover for her."

With the address firmly in hand you decide to make a day of it. You don't have any classes on Thursdays and your term paper isn't really due for another week anyways. Following the directions you ride the express bus downtown and finally reach a large, run down apartment complex. Following the stairs up to the fifth floor you come on what should be her unit.

((Cont.))
>>
>>28259808
Approaching the battered wood door you attempt to knock, only to have the door creak inward at contact.

"Uh hello, Abby? It's me from last night. I wanted to return your things."

You push the door further in to reveal a troubling scene. Everything is in disarray. The couch is ripped open and cotton stuffing is everywhere. Books are scattered across the floor from one end to another. Even the fridge looks like it has been looted. You walk silently through the scene, afraid to disturb anything. Your thoughts scatter in a million directions. Did somebody get her? Did she run away from those men? Should you call the police?

"If you would be so kind as to stay right where you are miss."

You practically jump out of your skin at the sudden voice. Wheeling around you see an old man in a trench coat and hat, hands in his pockets, and flanked by two other men in black suits. He smiles disarmingly and extends a hand to the hallway.

"I think we need to have a chat."

((That's it for tonight! If people are interested I'll take the time to actually plot out a continuing story, write notes, and learn how to shot dialogue formatting. Thanks for playing!))

You did well. I hope you continue this, you avoided the pitfalls of fetishy waifu quests despite being one. Im kind of impressed.
>>
>>28260000
Waiting warmly for it to resume.
>>
>>28260032
Fetishy waifu quest means precious little in this day and age anyway, but yes, OP did well.
>>
That was fun, if short. You did rather well OP.

I'd be interested in seeing this continue.

Thanks, OP. T'was fun.

Please come back, I enjoy it.
>>

Its about as waifu as you can get without being an actual waifu quest.

Uhm, alright anon. Allow me to bow out of this conversation.

Uh, do we still archive quests? Its been a while since they drove me off with the pitchforks and the fire.

So it will be then. It will probably take me at least until the weekend to get enough time and prep to continue the adventures of everybody's favorite kung-fu bibliophile civil rights crusader. I'll post a twitter and details in a QTG when I can.

I should say that I say that as someone who enjoyed the quest. It was a fun time.

Yes, but foolz works too.

Having a backbone automatically makes you a white knight now?
>>

If you're not a sociopathic twat you're a whiteknight.
Unless you avoid all females in favour of barely veiled homo-eroticism you're a waifufag.

The more you know.

Good show. Here I am, archiving new quests again. Been a while, feels good.

>>

On that note:

OP, avoid QTG as much as possible. I cannot stress this enough, the last thing you want or need is a reputation there.
>>
>>28260259
Well shit, I geuss I better get some armor on order then. Do I need a sword for the whole ensemble, or will my pocketknife and revolver suffice?

This. Drop off contact details, MAYBE link to your quest but otherwise stay out.

>>

Nigga, I'm gay. The pussy is irrelevant.

In some cases, and this may be one of them, it may be best to simply label the quest as such and not beat around the bush-

Hey yeah it's really nice to see you idiots constantly white-knighting for Clades. I just have one question for you. What about me? What about the Muties who aren't cute girls with cat ears. The ones who are just regular joes whose parents came up Snake Eyes in the Genetic Craps game. The sort who have eyes that aren't level, third arms that don't work, the kind of folk who get hooked on Heroin just to dull the pain of our ruined bodies.

We are the face of the Fallout, not the catgirls. The Clades are just some weeb gene-splicer's experiment that got out of hand. They are not the majority, far from it.

When's the last time you lifted your pinky finger to help Lumpy the mutant with terminal neurofibromatosis. No, you were too busy wondering where you could find a cute Clade girl to jump your bones.

"have sex with me and I'll vote no on Prop 21" Seriously, you people make me sick.

Now i'd better move, if the Fuzz catch me using an fixed ipad I found in the trash to post on an an unsecured Wi-Fi, I'm in for the beating of my life. If i'm lucky, or a swift and brutal execution if I'm not.
>>
>>28260400

If OP makes this a subplot, I will fully support the option.

That just might happen, guess who just noticed a Police Armed Patrol Cruiser circling the neighborhood.

They really don't want us posting from inside the Exclusion Zone. It's almost like the Provisional Government doesn't want the Norm public to know what happens when you cram thousands of people into an enclosed space with inadequate public services and one fucking Welfare station that's only open from 9am to 3pm. The line to exchange welfare vouchers for food is nine hours long. The only reason I've had anything to eat last week was the Black Market, and that was probably someone's dog.

I might sound irrational, but I've got a serious bone to pick with the Clades who do live in this Exclusion Zone. Every one of them is a fucking hooker, and they have no problem securing work passes out of the Zone. All they have to do to get one is give a guard a blowjob and bam, it's off to Club Catnip to dance naked for some slumming Norms and get paid to have sex with some overweight Corp Suit.

Me? I'm not a catgirl so even thought I have a job offer from a pro-mutie Carpenter in the City, I can't get a work pass because those bitches keep using them up.
>>
>>28260647
Oh shit, you got a visa with King Construction? I work for those guys, they're awesome! I'll see if we can push the guards, they owe me and Pops more than a few favors.

Still, man, i don't get the hate for the Clades. I was a 90-day wonder back near the end of the war, and they put me in charge of a Clade platoon. Even with those shitty old bolt-actions we got issued, those guys kicked some ass.

>>

The difference is, Harem Knights has a potentially happy ending. Prop 21 is much darker. It's the fa/tg/uys and their catgirl waifus vs the overwhelming power of the Government, the Media, public opinion basically everything and based on what I see, the fa/tg/uys losing and their mutant waifus being deported to Concentration Camps is pretty much a foregone conclusion.

Hang on, based on the last thread shouldn't the world's descriptions be more Post-Nuclear Wasteland than "Regular old College Town?"

From the last thread I got the impression that the world was a poisonous, scorched desert and everybody lives in Judge Dredd-esque Mega Cities.
>>
>>28273991
Depends entirely on how heavily based off that it is, and what elements were taken. For all we know, it IS postnuclear wasteland outside of enclaves of 'normalcy' like the one the college is in.
>>
>>28274024

True for all we know the college could be inside a giant Dome.

Tried to avoid massive indo-dump in thread partially because it's tedious and partly because I was making it up as I went along. The short answer is, this is a markedly happier setting than the one that spawned it. There were no cataclysmic events that gave rise to the appearance of alternately gened individuals in the general population.

Reproduction involving one or more alternately gened people greatly increases the likelihood of similar traits manifesting but by no means makes it certain or even probable. Generally speaking these issues manifest in less than 2% of the population.

The popular culture has separated mutations into two categories. Stable, reproducible mutations (clades) and the more unstable, unsightly, or degenerative ones (mutants). Where the actual lines between these groups lies is unclear and most major medical research outfits reject them entirely.

Social attitudes towards clades are varied. At first it was treated as a medical epidemic, but as the permanency of their existence has begun to settle on people attitudes have begun to shift in different directions.

PS: Consider that post instructive but non-canon. Everything is subject to change as I try to educate my poor liberal arts major brain in genetics.

Thread on for saturday, twitter is @Clade_Quest

BOOO!

Give me Judge Dredd ish mega-cities, the Big Fuckup, fallout storms, and a thinly veiled Strontium Dog expy setting or give me death.

Or I'll just make my own quest thread. One that is truer to the spirit of the original thread.

I'd play it. I just didn't have it in me right now to write something so relentlessly bleak. Not to say things are going to be all sunshine and light for Felicia and crew....

Well we'll get there.

Eh, I personally would love if the setting stayed relatively idyllic and not fucked up, it just so happens that grass only grows inside the domes and everything outside sucks.
