I am Monique Gilbeault, a man of style and grace. Though I am my father's third son and thus have no claim to anything save the family name, I am the most accomplished of my father's children.

The only one of us to have truly inherited the skills of my great grandfather, the reknowned duelist Marquise Gilbeault, I have managed to achieve the rank of Captain of the Border Guard of my home country of Granache through naught save my own abilities.

I also placed second in His Majesty's Royal Swordsmanship Tournament, though I lost in the final round because that whoreson Reinhold shattered the blade that I inherited from my great-grandfather on his deathbed... I have yet to pay him back for that disgrace.

But as of late, things have been rather quiet. After I was lucky enough to be able to personally escort the lovely Princess Luciana of the neighboring Kingdom of Marconetti across the border, nothing of particular note has happened in my dull life.

After having breakfast with my family, I headed to headquarters to arrange for things to be handled during my absence. Unfortunately, I fouled up my landing... but never mind that.
>>
As I have come to trust your judgement over the past month or so, I shall defer to your decisions as to which choices I should make in my daily life.

However, I will ignore any such suggestions that would go against my gentlemanly code of conduct or otherwise cause me undue stress.

You have guided me this far, however, and I wish for you to continue to lend me your wisdom.
>>
"Good afternoon, Strelow," I say as I approach my second-in-command. "I trust that things have been going smoothly since yesterday?"
"Hey, Monique," Strelow replies. "Same old same old, though I increased the frequency of today's patrols because of the King's trip to Marconetti."
"I see. Was there anything else of note?"
"Fortunately not," Strelow says, sighing. "All there really is for us to do is wait for them to get back."

"That's good..." I say, relieved. "...now I can leave things to you with a clear conscience."
"Huh? What're you talking about?" Strelow replies.
"Something came up so I'll be leaving for Marconetti in a few hours. And I'll be gone for about a week."
"Wha- A week!?" he glares at me angrily. "Why the hell didn't you say anything about this earlier!? I had my own stuff to do later today, but now I'm stuck handling your workload too..."

"I apologize for the lack of prior notice," I say to him. "I myself only found out about this today."

"If it's any consolation, I'll do my best to make it up to you when I get back."
"You already owe me enough as it is... who the hell do you think was stuck covering for you during that month that you up and vanished? Or all those times when you decided that you just -had- to personally escort such-and-such important guest to the castle?"

As much as I would like to slap him across the face for speaking in such a way towards his superior officer, even I have to admit that he does have a point... as such, I shall let these insults slide.

"Whatever, man..." Strelow says, sighing deeply. "Just go, I'll take care of stuff here just like I always do."

"I have some packing do do before I leave, so I suppose this is goodbye for now," I say as I turn towards the door.
"Yeah, whatever. Just don't get yourself killed while you're out there, I really don't need any more work to do because of you," Strelow replies.

With that, I make my leave, ignoring the hushed murmurs of the other guards who are wondering where exactly it is that I'll be headed off to. Not that it's any of their concern, anyways.

Rememering that I hadn't taken the carriage here (and how could I forget the results of that), I make my way to the roof. Surprised by my sudden arrival, the guards who are posted on the roof do their best to gather their composure and salute to me.

>[1/2]
>>
>>28224606
>[2/2]

"C- Captain Gilbeault, what brings you all the way up here!?" one guard asks.
"Yes, you rarely ever umm, grace us with your presence!" the other joins in.
"I'm about to take my leave, and the roof is the best takeoff point." I reply as I make my way to the edge of the roof. "Do try and be on your best behavior for Lt. Strelow, he will be in charge in my absence."
"Y- yes sir!" the men shout, saluting to me as best they can.

Smiling as I recognize just how much respect I instill in my subordinates, I begin chanting the incantation for the same spell that brought me here.

"Shining lights of the night sky, free me of my shackles so that I may soar to your boundless heights," I say as I jump off the edge of the roof. "Starlight Wing!"

Once again timing it perfectly with the apex of my leap, the spell's wings of light form at my back and take me into the skies. After taking note of my bearings, I then proceed stright for my family's mansion.

Flying is always such a pleasant sensation... if I could, I would so all of the time. And since it is now the middle of autumn, I have no need to worry about flying into wayward insects. As such, I am allowed to simply admire the scenery from so high up.

After a few minutes, I see that I am approaching my destination... time to decelerate and descend.

Yes, I should probably go to greet Mother before I begin packing. As this is generally when I would actually be leaving the house, I have a fairly good idea where she would be at this hour. As such, I head out to the garden, where she is once again attending to her flowers.

"Mother?" I call out.
"Hm?" Mother looks around for a bit, finally fixing her gaze on me. "Ah, Monique! So you've taken care of things at work already?"
"Yes, I've just gotten back from doing so."
"And you came straight to your dear old mother? How sweet of you!"
"Well, um... I figured that I might as well say hello before I start packing..."

Ignoring my embarassment, Mother walks over to a nearby rosebush and clips off a single flower.

"And here you go!" she says, placing it in my hair. "A flower for my flower!"

"But you always have that lovely rose fragrance ..." Mother replies.
"A fragrance and the flower itself are entirely different things..." I sigh. "Anyways, I just wanted to tell you that I was back."
"Alright, sweetie!" Mother says as she kisses me of the cheek. "Make sure that you don't forget anything important, and bring plenty of underwear!"
"Yes, I know..."

I then leave the garden in order to escape further embarassment, kissing my mother on the cheek before I go.

Yes, I ought to check on Matthias, if only to see if he's actually coming along to Marconetti. Walking around to his room, I knock on his door a few times and then wait.

And wait.

And wait some more. Is he asleep or ignoring me, or what? Just to be sure, I knock again. After a few minutes, I hear rustling coming from inside his room. Just as I'm about to knock a final time, the door opens and I am met with my brother's annoyed face.

"...the hell do you want?" Matthias asks.
"I just wanted to know if you'd be accomianying me after all," I reply.
"Dammit, you and Mom and even Michi..." he grumbles as he heads back into his room.

...and reappears a few seconds later, carrying a large suitcase.

"Here," he says as he places the suitcase in my hands. "I still have other packing to do, so go make yourself useful and carry that to the front for me."

Before I can even respond, he retreats into his room and closes the door behind him.

"I suppose that does count as an answer," I say to myself with a sigh as I then carry his luggage to the front of the mansion and place it by the door.

Seeing as how Matthias has already started packing his own things, it's probably about time that I do the same. Heading straight for my room, I bring out my best suitcase from my closet and get to work.

Casualwear for when I'm in the city and don't want to draw too much attention (though anyone with my stunning looks would stand out regardless of the clothing...) a couple of my finest sets of formalwear, socks, shoes, undergarments... what else is there?

...that's right, I ought to change out of my armor. After all, I'm not going to Marconetti as a captain of the Border Guard, I'm going there as a representative of the Gilbeault family. After finding something suitable to wear on the trip, I gather a few toiletries together, make sure I have enough spending money for the trip, and finally close my suitcase.

A sword?

Why, that's the silliest suggestion that you could possib-... of course I'd...

...oh, you meant my great-grandfather's sword that that whoreson destroyed? I buried its remains in our family's cemetary plot, sadly. While I could get it reforged, it wouldn't be the same as the one he entrusted to me...

Ugh, I'm getting sentimental again...

Anyways, I failed as its wielder so I decided to put it to rest, despite it being a truly splendid blade. Should I get the opportunity to do so while we are in Marconetti, I would be more than happy to visit the same disgrace upon that ill-mannered cur.

As for armor... I've brought a dueling outfit, and it is enchanted with the proper protections as per tournament regulations. I am not going to Marconetti as a Guardsman, I am there as a noble guest of the King himself. It is neither my place nor my duty to do anything else.

Random note, there are no undead in this world and thus no necromancers.
People have certainly tried, but it's not a thing that actually works.
The closest you get to such things are mediums, and they are every bit as sketchy as they are in the real world.

Yes, I should probably go to see if Matthias is done packing... following your suggestion, I head to his room and knock on his door again. This time it's not long before he answers.

"Dammit, Monique..." Matthias grumbles as he opens his door, "...the hell do you want now?"
"I just finished my own packing, so I was wondering if you'd done the same," I reply.
"I'm trying to figure out what to bring," he says, sighing. "You already brought down my clothes, so now there's the question of what extra stuff I should bring in my other bag. I'm carrying my ocarina on me, but I have a ton of books that I haven't read yet and it's not realy feasable to bring all of them with me."

"I see," I reply, running a hand through my hair. "Depending on what you're unsure about, might it be a good idea to being one book of each genre? That should cut the volume down a lot."
"Hmm... that sounds like a plan," Matthias replies as he moves to go back inside his room. "...oh yeah," he stops. "Go make yourself useful and ask Michi to take care of my little tree while I'm out. I'd be really pissed to find it dead when I get back because I got dragged along on your little trip."

With that, he closes the door behind him. As I have nothing better to do, I figure that I had might as well do as Matthias says and find Michiko. He's oddly fond of that little tree, after all...

As I wander around the hallways of the mansion, my ears pick up the sound of Marcel bragging about... something. As his boasts usually involve some moronic story that he's telling his wife, I decide to follow his voice to the living room.

And as I thought, there Marcel is, standing with one foot on a chair and his fist in the air in an exaggerated pose as he regales Michiko with another tale of his boorishness.

"...and there I was, with like four guys surrounding me..." Marcel says, a wild look in his eyes. "But I wasn't scared at all, I knew I could beat those pansy-asses. So they all came at me at once, but I punched one of them in the face and he went down HARD, those pussies were even worse at taking hits than Monique is!" he laughs.

"Brother, I've just come to deliver a message to Michiko," I reply.
"You oughta go and get your own wife to talk to..." he mumbles under his breath. "Whatever, spill it already so I can get back to entertaining my lady."

"Matthias requested that you tend to his little tree while we're away," I say to Michiko.
"Oh, that won't be a problem at all!" Michiko replies, bowing in that odd way that people from the East do.
"Thank you, I'd much rather not see how he would react if his tree died while we were out due to lack of attention."
"That shouldn't be a problem," she says with a faint smile. "My father owns several, so I'm familiar with their care."

"That al you wanted?" Marcel says to me dismissively.
"Yes," I reply, having no desire to put up with his insults.

"Very well," I say as I turn around to leave. "You can return to your undoubtably exciting tale of being surrounded by men now."

I then make a cool exit, making a point not to linger around long enough to see his reaction when he finally get it. After all, i'm sure that my dear sister-in-law understood -exactly- what I meant.

The next order of business is to see if Father has gotten done with the preparations for our trip, so I make my way to his study...

...and run into him along the way, just as I hear Marcel's voice in the distance screaming about me being a bundle of sticks.

"So you changed into something presentable, I see," Father says to me. "Good, we don't want people thinking that we're some kind of military family after all."

Father never thought much of my going into the Border Guard, but I can not for the life of me figure out just what it is that he -did- want me to do with my life...

"Are the preparations for our departure done with, Father?" I ask.
"Yes, the carriage is outside as we speak," Father replies. "Wait, 'we?'"
"That's right, Matthias appears to be coming along after all."
"Seriously?" he looks at me with a look of shock. "I'm surprised that you actually managed to convince that layabout to actually leave the house for an extended period of time... no matter, let's head to the carriage. I trust that you've packed your things?"
"Yes, I've left our things by the door."

Yes, there is no need for men to chatter idly the way that women do. As such, the two of us make our way to the front door without a word, just as Matthias arrives with his second bag.

"Nice to see that you're not going to make your brother late," Father says to MAtthias.
"Yeah, yeah..." Matthias mumbles. "Let's just get going now before I change my mind."
"Very well," Father says as he directs two servants to carry our bags outside and load them into the carriage.

With that out of the way, the three of us head outside and wait for our luggage to be loaded.

"I'm sure that Monique knows better, but as you're not exactly used to formal events," Father begins, "I expect you to be on your best behavior, Matthias."
"And when am I not?" Matthias replies with a deep sigh. "I don't get into barfights like Marcel, and I don't hit on married women like Monique. out of your three sons, I'm the one LEAST likely to do something embarssing."

Damn it, that was just the one time. And it's not like she was wearing a ring...

"Whatever, just make ure that you're on your best behavior. That goes for the both of you," Father says. "You're both going to be representing our family in a foreign country, and I don't want to hear any gossip about either of you that doesn't involve how incredibly proper you were."

Just as Father's about to start another round of berating, Mother comes running out of the mansion.

"Oh, my babies!" Mother exclaims as she pulls Matthias and I into a hug. 'I'll miss you so much!"
"I'll miss you as well, Mother," I reply.
"Yeah, yeah..." Matthias groans, clearly unused to mother's displays of affection even after all these years.

Releasing us from her embrace, Mother turns to Matthias.

"You're older, so make sure that you look after your little brother, okay?" she says.
"Yeah, I know..." Matthias groans.
"And Monique, I expect you to keep a hold of your temper," she says as she turns to me. If you want revenge, challenge him properly like your great-grandfather would, you hear me?"

"So, Matthias," I begin, "how has your ocarina playing been going?"
"Hm?" he replies, not bothering to look up. "Fine, I guess. I only took it up as a hobby anyways."
"You taught yourself how to read music just for that, didn't you?"
"Pretty much, yeah," he says as he peers through his ocarina's holes to make sure that everything is clean. "It's not like your piano or anything, though. Mom and Michi like my playing well enough, but the two Marcels of our family think that it's for pansy-asses so I stopped playing it outside my room."

Ah, yes. They disapprove of my appearance and in Matthias's sedentary hobbies as being "effeminate." It makes me wonder if that's the source of his shut-in lifestyle...

"But whatever, I stopped doing things just to please others a long time ago," Matthias says as he wraps his ocarina in a cloth and places it in his pocket. "That's what our great-grandfather said, isn't it? That a real man doesn't worry about what others may think?"
"Something along those lines, I believe," I reply.

With his ocarina maintenance done, Matthias begins going through the stack of books that he brought to read during the trip.

Matthias always gets annoyed when people bother him while he's trying to read... you're right, I should probably leave him alone.

While my brother reads his book, I look outside and admire the scenery. The countryside at this time of year is quite lovely, and it makes me quite appreciative of my job. When I actually deign to go on patrol, I'm treated to such sights almost constantly. As I sit quietly and look out the window, I feel my eyes growing heavy... after trying to fight it for a while, I eventually give in to the pull of sleep.

When I finally regain consciousness, the scenery has shifted from the countryside of Granache to the cityscape of... my word, I've actually managed to sleep for the entire trip here.

"Finally awake, huh," Matthias says to me. "We just arrived in the city, but where were we supposed to be staying while we're here?"
"According to the invitation, guests from Granache's nobility will be staying in the guest wing of Mrconetti's castle."
"...huh. Guess you'll be ejoying that, you'll be surrounded by your beloved peers."
"In any event, it's better than being placed around the common folk."

.[2/2]

After a few minutes of riding, our carriage reaches the castle itself. The carriage stops and starts several more times as it's directed by the castle staff to the proper area to let the guests off... and then it's finally time.

KNOCK KNOCK

"Matthias and Monique Gilbeault of Granache?" a voice calls out from outside.
"That would be us," I reply.
"Alright, you can come on out."

The two of us do as we are instructed and are met with several butlers and guards.

"Er... the driver said that there was a Matthias and a Monique, but there's two guys here..." a guard says.
"-I- am Monique Gilbeault," I reply coldly.
"O- Oh. Sorry about that, but your name... anyways, the butlers will take care of your things so just follow me to the greeting area."

"Did you not get any rest while we were riding, Matthias?" I ask, turning towards my brother.
"No, I was reading for pretty much the entire trip," he replies.
"I see. Um, Mr, Guard?" I turn to the guard who is leading the way.
"Hm?" he turns to face me. "What is it?"
"Would you happen to know who else has arrived?"

"Um..." the guard scratches his head. "I don't really know any specific names, but we have some guests from Granache, Krassato, Perricone and a few other countries already here And I think the King's brother-in-law's party is supposed to show up later today. The Prince's birthday is still a few days away, so we're expecting most of the attendants to show up within the next day or so."
"So we were among the first guests to arrive?" I ask.
"No, there's a bunch of people already here. You're far from the first, but I suppose that it's good that you arrived when you did." the guard says. "Tomorrow's sure to be hell, what with the Lanzmanns scheduled to arrive..."

Lanzmann... he's talking about the famous painter? I'd heard rumors that he'd married a whore, but I suppose those must be false... after all, only a fool would bring a whore to a royal gathering.

"Was there anyone who you were looking forward to seeing?" the guard asks, hoping to make small talk.
"Nobody in particular, though I suppose that it would be nice to see Princess Luciana again," I reply.
"Oh, you've met her before? She's feared by most of the staff here on pretty much the same level as the King himself, so I can only imagine how she is when she's in a foreign country..." he laughs to himself.

It looks like we've finally reached the end of the line... or rather what's passing for one. The entire hallway is completely packed full of people, and the murmur of people is -quite- loud.

"Well, it looks like this is it for me," the guard says to us as he waves goodbye. "The butlers will stick around to take care of your bags, but I guess you just need to wait here until you're finally processed."
"I see. Thank you for your assistance," I say.

As the guard walks away, I look around at the crowd for any familiar faces. While I have to admit that there's nobody aside from you who I would actually consider as a friend, it would be at least slightly comforting to find a...

>>
>>28228855
Damnit Monique. It's like you don't understand at all while you were punched. I'd think you'd at least know something about the royal family and their relationships. Nicolette and Marianne grew up together. Nicollete's mother taught them both magic. Considering Marianne's lack of a mother herself, Arianne is probably the closest thing she ever had to one.

You showed up, kissed the princess's hand without permission, sucked up to her with a bunch of empty flattery, and then turned right around and insulted her childhood friend's mother.

You completely mistreated the princess and insulted the wife of the motherfucking Red Mist(seriously, how are you not dead yet?). You should go over there and apologize for your insult and insincerity before you get punched again.
>>

There's no indication Nico makes her mother's identity secret.
And since her mother and father must necesarially associate in noble circles, someone like Monique would obviously know.

The only reason Reinhold didn't know was because he wasn't in a position to be aware of who's married to who in noble circles. Monique is.
