I am Monique Gilbeault, a man of style and grace. Though I am my father's third son and thus have no claim to anything save the family name, I am the most accomplished of my father's children.

The only one of us to have truly inherited the skills of my great grandfather, the reknowned duelist Marquise Gilbeault, I have managed to achieve the rank of Captain of the Border Guard of my home country of Granache through naught save my own abilities.

I also placed second in His Majesty's Royal Swordsmanship Tournament, though I lost in the final round because that whoreson Reinhold shattered the blade that I inherited from my great-grandfather on his deathbed... I have yet to pay him back for that disgrace.

But as of late, things have been rather quiet. After I was lucky enough to be able to personally escort the lovely Princess Luciana of the neighboring Kingdom of Marconetti across the border, nothing of particular note has happened in my dull life.
>>
As I have come to trust your judgement over the past month or so, I shall defer to your decisions as to which choices I should make in my daily life.

However, I will ignore any such suggestions that would go against my gentlemanly code of conduct or otherwise cause me undue stress.

You have guided me this far, however, and I wish for you to continue to lend me your wisdom.

The warm rays of the sun shine through my bedroom window, rousing me from my slumber. Greeting the day with my usual vigor, I spend the next hour or so getting bathed, styling my luxurious hair, and getting dressed.

Thanks to certain manipulations of the Border Guard's schedule on my part, I have no need to report for duty until noon so there is plenty of time before I need to get going.

While it sucks he lost a family heirloom he needs to get over the fact his bitchass got outsworded by the swordbreaker style.

Which reminds me: shouldn't SOMEONE have recognized the style if Rein's teacher was at least remotely well known?

>>
>>28168300
Wasn't the guy who was going to teach him a dual swords user, though? It's possible that adapting it to a single sword would change it enough that it's nearly unrecognizable.
>>
I've been wanting to ask you stuff for two weeks but I never had time to stay awake until now.

You said Granache's and Marconetti's kings went on adventures. Is it possible for the princess to go on one too? Would we have to go with her to make sure she is always ok?

You also said that magic depends on what you're trying to do. Would be possible to make a royal bodyguard only spell that goes the same as Sanctuary? Like a spell that would only work on Marianne and using our will to always defend and protect her.

Love your threads by the way. The first thing I always do when getting home is reading them.
>>
>>28168300
Well that style uses two swords and we only use one so either we don't actually use that style or we are using a modified variant of it which would make it harder to recognize.

Reinhold does pack a secondary blade though I think it's just a dagger. And if he was going to adapt it it would still have the foundations of the old style unless he started over & worked from the ground up for some reason.
>>
>>28168353
Also, that guy is, like, super dead. Personal opinion of course.
>>
>>28168353
It's not really a secondary blade, though. It's just a holdout knife.

Although, this does raise the question if Reinhold could use a second sword in a pinch. Especially if he knows that scissors swordbreaker technique.
>>
>>28168373
Oh yeah, most certainly dead. Or really good at hiding his lust for lil Reinhold. Really hoping for the former though.
>>
>>28168353
Reinhold was self-taught. Since he HAD no teachers, the suggested adoption fell through, which means the guys probably died on their expedition.
>>
>>28168398
Does it ever actually say he was? I know Citrine mentioned he was always on his own, practicing, but that doesn't mean he wasn't taught the basics.

It would also explain why he doesn't use a shield, if he's using a technique designed around two swords.

Yes, it would probably be best to greet my father first. He normally spends his mornings in his study, so that shall be my first stop of the day.

Making a point to close my door behind me so as to avoid inviting my brothers' aggravating pranks, I make my way through the halls of our mansion, nodding in acknowledgement to our household's servants as I walk.

My brothers would always act as if they didn't even recognize the people who cook their meals and clean their messes as existing at all, but I am no such ingrate. Graceless fools...

As I make it to my father's study, I knock on the door a few times before entering. And there, I am met with... ugh.

"Ah, Monique!" my eldest brother Marcel the Second says cheerily as I enter the room. "And how's my favorite little sister doing this fine morning?"

Damn it all... I have no desire to put up with his annoying habits so early in the morning.

Just because I happened to be born after my mother promised my great-aunt that she would name her next child after her and then I was cursed with these good looks on top of it, I've endured an entire life of ridicule...

I've half a mind to tease that fool about having yet to produce an heir to the Gilbeault name despite having been married to a lovely woman from the East for going on three years now, but you are right. I should keep my composure and act as a gentleman should.

"I'm doing quite well, thank you," I say to Marcel, ignoring his insult. "And father, I wish you a good morning."
"Thank you, Monique," my father says, stroking his beard. "I was actually meaning to speak with you about something..."
"Hm? What is it?"
"Last week, I got an invitation to a certain party," he says, tossing me an envelope. "but the host is King Celestino of Marconetti, and that means that that miserable wretch Guillaume Arnaud will most likely be attending."

During his youth, Father was an aspiring duelist. He inherited his grandfather's skill with the sword, and was starting to make quite a name for himself... but then he made the mistake of insulting one of Guillaume Arnaud's friends while the old butler was within earshot.

Enraged, Arnaud challenged Father to a duel and then proceeded to completely destroy him in public... his fighting spirit was utterly destroyed and he never picked up a sword again after that day. Naturally, he still holds a bit of a grudge.

"Very well, I would be happy to go," I say. "I'll do my best to represent the Gilbeault family."
"As well you should," Father replies. "Now there's the matter of your transport..."
"Ah, yes. The party is... in four days? That's cutting it kind of close, especially considering that I need to arrange for how things in the Border Guard will be handled in my absence..."
"Yes... well you see, it took your brothers forever to finally turn the offer down. I trust that this won't be too much of an issue? I've arranged for a carriage to bring you to Marconetti this afternoon."

This af- ugh, why couldn't he have at least told me about this sooner... now I'm going to need to head out there directly after breakfast and then come right back here if I want to get there before dark.

"N... no, it's no problem at all," I say. "Thank you for giving me this opportunity, Father."
"Maybe you'll finally hit it off with a sexy foreign lady like your big brother, eh?" Marcel says, winking.
"Perhaps," I reply.

With a bow, I leave Father and Marcel to whatever they were talking about before I interrupted. This sudden invitation has thrown off all of my plans... now I don't even have time to relax at home before I head out.

As it is, I probably have time to do one more thing before breakfast... but what?

Ah, yes. My mother.

It would be utterly rude not to greet her so early in the morning, and I suppose I -should- inform her of the good news...

As such, I make my way to the courtyard where she spends each morning tending to her garden. Though it's late in the year, she's still hard at work... I suspect that I inherited my drive to succeed from her.

"Good morning, Mother," I say as I enter the courtyard where my mother is admiring the roses which are still in bloom.
"Ah, Monique! Good morning!" my mother replies happily as she shows me a warm smile.

Henriette Gilbeault, age forty-nine. Though she has her eccentricities, she's always been a kind, understnding mother. To be honest, I have no idea how she's able to stand putting up with most of my family... though I have to admit that I'm glad that she has.

"So what brings you here to my garden so early?" she asks.
"I doubt I'd get another chance today, seeing as how certain events have me leaving soon," I reply, holding up the invitation.
"Oh, you poor thing!" Mother says to me with pity in her eyes. "Your brothers actually dumped that onto you? I know that your father enjoys those parties, but such dreadful affairs are no good for a boy as delicate as you..."

That genuinely amazes me. The way Reinhold heard it, Marconetti is virtually (if not actually) Moniques spiritual homeland.
>>
>>28170767

>[2/2]

"I'm twenty-two years old, mother. I'm no longer a boy," I say, sighing.
"You may say that, but you'll always be my little baby boy!" Mother replies.
"...anyways," I begin, clearing my throat, "I figured that I ought to inform you that I'll be leaving later today."
"Yes, I figured as much. I'll miss you dearly, you know. Your brothers are always so cold towards me..." she sighs. "But I suppose this is an opportunity for you to use your status as nobility to find yourself a nice girl to marry!"

Again with this...

"Unlike Marcel, I have no intent on relying on my family name in order to find a wife," I say, running my hands through my hair.
"Yes, yes... you've always been so prideful. Just keep what I said in mind, okay?" Motherr replies.
"If you insist."

Not a chance. In character Reinhold doesn't know any of this, so still thinks he's a complete tool who needs a face-punchin'
>>
Monique is going to be so miserable at Marconetti. His mother was right, he's far too delicate for noble society. And who is it that tries to comfort him? That bastard Reinhold. Who the hell does he think he is?
>>
>>28171034
I get the feeling that he doesn't want to be a ponce, but everyone around him since birth was a ponce so he doesn't even realize he's being a ponce.

Unfortunately for him, Reinhold (the anti-ponce) punched him in the face rather than befriend him, so he missed his chance to get in on all dat juicy potential character growth for the entire first act of the story.

I want to sit him down and explain why it seems like his life is a constant battle with the entire world. But I'm getting really tired of doing that for people, and it's really tiring and time consuming, and he hasn't shown even a glimmer of self awareness yet.

Yes, I should show Mother that I'm not like my worthless brothers at least.

"Mother, shall we get going to breakfast?" I say.
"Hm? Ah yes, it getting to be around that time, isn't it..." Mother replies. "I take it that you're offering to escort me there?"
"That was my intent, yes."
"My Monique is ever the gentleman..." she laughs. "...it's a shame that you've yet to marry."
"Yes, well..." I sigh, growing tired of this conversation.

I then offer Mother my arm, and the two of us make our way to the dining room. Along the way, she begins speaking.

"Do you have any idea who else might be going to this party?" Mother asks. "I'm sure it'll be lonely there all alone without any familiar faces..."
"Father believes that Gillaume Arnaud will be there," I reply. "Aside from that, I imagine that other friends of Marconetti's royal family and dignitaries from foreign countries will be in attendance."
"Hm, that makes sense. And I heard that our Princess Marianne is friends with Marconetti's Luciana..."

"Reinhold," I mutter through gritted teeth.
"Ah, yes!" Mother says. "That young fellow from the army who you fought in the tournament's finals!"
"That worthless bastard is sure to be there as well, he is the Princess's bodyguard after all..."
"Don't do anything foolish now," Mother says in an attempt to calm me down. "I don't want to find that you ended up detained in a foreign prison for attacking him at the party."
"I'm not stupid, Mother," I sigh. "Though I won't deny that I would certainly love to return the insult..."

Seeing my mood sour, Mother stops in her tracks, pulling me back.

"I mean it, Monique," she says with a stern tone. "I don't want you wallowing in past failure like your father does, but I also don't want you to forget your composure and cause a public incident. Should you still have a problem with him, challenge him to a rematch and show him the fruits of that training journey you went on after your first loss."
"Yes, I know... should we fight again, I won't be the one who loses," I reply.
"That's my boy," she says, patting me on the head.

My mood sufficiently fouled, I say nothing else as we finally make it to the dining room and take our seats. And of course Marcel takes notice of my unpleasant mood right away.

"What crawled up your ass and died, Monique?" Marcel says, grinning.

I thought the decision was that interaction with her wouldn't go deep enough for the knowledge to be learnt or for it to mean anything, but she's still true to that character behind the scenes.

Marianne slammed the door behind her and, tears in her eyes; sat down hard on Luciana's bed.
She knew that Luciana wouldn't mind, and would still be busy at the ball regardless.
As the tears rolled down Marianne's face, embarrassment turned into anger; that bodyguard her father had forced onto her had AGAIN turned a ballroom dance into something better associated with his childhood.
Plans to make her 'bodyguard' suffer for this repeated insult whirled through her head.
Unfortunately, everything that sprung to mind seemed too small a punishment, she observed; as she spotted... A book? Barely poking out from under Luciana's bed, it looked suspiciously like it was lazily hidden.
As Marianne opened the book and read, her face displayed first shock, followed by a devious grin; she knew just how she would punish this bodyguard of hers.

Sorry, guys... I'm still suffering the effects from that all-nighter I pulled last time and now my brain's kind of fried. As this takes a bit more effort than usual to run, I'm going to have to call it a night here.

I'll run again tomorrow night, hopefully to the end of Monique's bit so we can get back to the normal story.

Thanks for putting up with this little experiment!

Reinhold Rogers Is disappointed with you.

Reinhold forgave the girls invading his personal space and Princess her slamming him into the wall. I'm sure he will be able to befriend Monique as long as he maintains respectful distance from his charge.

Of course with Citrine babbling we know he's not gonna make that easy.

I ship him with Nicolette.
>>
>>28172327
The difference is that those are waifus/women.
>>
>>28172856
Monique is girly enough to be a woman and has a woman's name and his brothers all call him their sister. Best waifu.
>>
>>28172856

I have seen no evidence of Reinhold being a dick to males, even when it would have been justified. Have you?
>>
>>28172937
He's snubbed the guards he went out of his way to greet on his first day for the entirety of his time at the castle.
>>
>>28172967
Yeah. The other guys just haven't crossed him /and/ are massively stronger
>>
>>28172967

How is that a dickery? We simply haven't had opportunity to interact.
>>
>>28173385
>We simply haven't had opportunity to interact.

You mean every time we had free time? Everyone was too focused on seeing waifus or getting lessons. Had we been more familar, other guards wouldnt treat us this way
>>
>>28173424
What way? They just don't want to get beaten too hard in a spar.

I'm guessing Rein don't spend enough money on ale and whores, but I'd chalk that up to the upbringing. He's just happy to have moved on to calmer environs.
>>
>>28173465
They don't want to get beaten in a spar by the guy who made next to no effort to get to know them and mitigate their fears.
>>
>>28173523
Yeah, this.
>>
>>28173523

They are right to be afraid, though.

But hey, if that's the way you feel, we can start a Gentleperson's Club at the castle upon return from the ball. Everyone's invited!

Although I still fail to see how not going out of his way to shake hand with every single person in the castle just because he can would be a dickery. Do you do that in your job?
>>
>>28173716
I would do that if it would get me sparring partners
>>
>>28173729
Those sparring partners are not that much of an improvement over the dummies.
>>
>>28173729

That's not being nice, that's manipulating people.

It's also useless. Most other guards are inferior to Rein and he'd learn little of use. Maybe schooling the guards would give benefit to castle defenses, but Rein already has Nicolette and, even better, Arnaud to spar with.
>>
>>28173757
Not really. Reinhold doesn't have much experience taking on multiple opponents. Almost all his training is for duels.
>>
>>28172967
>>28173424
>>28173523

You're twisting the facts. Reinhold tried to offer sparring, none of them accepted. Then, Archelon didn't really present suggestions to interact with them, while major characters and activities took all of our time. There's no indication he's seen as snobbing them. If anything, his niceness is starting to become common knowledge, judging by the reaction of the driver in PGQ 25.
>"Eh?" he looks at you, completely taken off-guard. "Um... sure. Thanks, man," he says as he takes a donut out of the box and immediately starts eating it. "I can see why you're so popular."

Archelon just treated them as NPCs, and judging by how Nicolette treats them, that's not really abnormal in-universe. We're already fucking busy, I don't think they'd ressent us too much.

I agree we could get to know them more, but we spend most of our time indoors and they have their own schedule.
>>
>>28173867
>Then, Archelon didn't really present suggestions to interact with them
All those What do? votes? We could have had a chat with the guards. Or the maids. Any of them, and some of them would be named characters.
>>
>>28173775
>Reinhold doesn't have much experience taking on multiple opponents. Almost all his training is for duels.
Why would you think that? He was a soldier until recently, i am sure he has training with fighting more than one opponent at the same time. Also, i think a monster like Arnauld wouldn't have much problem attacking like he is fighting three foot soldiers at the same time for his training.
Still, one-on-one spar is not much useful but he could spar with three of them. That should be fruitful training.
>>
>>28173921
Yeah, we could have also started a foundation or learned Takamarus people language from some books.

Back on the initial topic, there is null evidence that Reinhold is nice to ladies but not guys.
>>
Does anyone else want to see Monique issue a challenge for a duel, only to see Reinhold turn him down and treat him like the petulant little manchild he is?
>>
>>28174405
"Let me get this straight: you're challenging me to a duel... because I beat you in a duel? I'm pretty sure that's not how it works."

"Oh, it's actually because the sword I broke was an heirloom? Well, if you didn't want it to break in battle, you probably shouldn't have been fighting with it, then!"

"Besides, if your grandfather was even half the swordsman you think he was, I'm sure he'd be disappointed in you letting sentimentality keep you from bringing a more effective weapon to the field of battle."

...and THEN we could get in a fight.
>>
>>28174574
Nope. No starting fights.

If he wants to fight us, he has to either attack us directly or threaten the Princess. Because we have no quarrel with him, and we have much bigger social obligations and responsibilities than helping some guy we beat in a tournament desperately attempt to stroke what's left of his own little ego.
>>
>>28174574
>"Oh, it's actually because the sword I broke was an heirloom? Well, if you didn't want it to break in battle, you probably shouldn't have been fighting with it, then!"

Considering Reinhold is also carrying around a sword that means a whole lot to him he'd probably feel pretty damn bad about breaking something with that kind of sentimentality about it. He probably used his own sword in that fight, after all.
>>
The thought that Reinhold is biased against Monique because of his gender is ridiculous.
The reason he's so less willing to forgive him in comparison to the shit the girls pulled is rather obviously that all of the stuff he forgave people for was directed against him and not someone else.

In case you somehow failed to notice it young Reinhold had massive issues with seeing himself as not worthless and even now he still gets far easier upset over stuff that happens to other people than he does over stuff that happens to him.
>>
>>28174677
>In case you somehow failed to notice it young Reinhold had massive issues with seeing himself as not worthless

This is also why I think he can be so workaholic and sword-obsessed. The only reason he was really able to live outside of the brothel is because his sword skills were good enough to join the military, and the only reason he got to live in the castle is because they were good enough to win that tournament. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought that his sword talents and such are the only things that make him not worthless. Because, seriously, where would he be right now without them?
>>
>>28174625
I was trying to say that telling him that he's being silly and that his (great-)grandfather would be disappointed in him would probably lead to Monique losing his cool and coming at us, not that we should just taunt him and then consent to a rematch.

>>28174665
well yeah but reinhold's sword is awesome so it's k

More seriously, I feel like if we were on the other side of the equation, we'd definitely be disappointed -- maybe even upset -- but we're also from a background where we understand that if your sword breaks in a battle, it normally means you're disarmed and are going to DIE. Having it happen in a tournament, rather than in mortal combat, is comparatively a blessing.

Part of the problem is that, being from a background of nobility, Monique seems to be conflating "a great swordsman" and "a great duelist", whereas they're really two totally different things.
>>
>>28174665
Not really. It's true that his sword is important for him but if it wasn't up to the standarts he'd get a new one to use by now. He even asked Arnauld for its quality to know if he would need to get a better one.
>>
>>28174926
So you're saying that he'd get rid of it if it wasn't good enough for the job?

I think he'd use a different sword if there was a better one around but I highly doubt he wants to see that one get trashed or broken. He'd probably hang it up in his room if he wasn't using it and he would definitely be upset if it was gone.
>>
>>28174942
>So you're saying that he'd get rid of it if it wasn't good enough for the job?
No i am not saying that. I am saying he'd exactly do this
>Well, if you didn't want it to break in battle, you probably shouldn't have been fighting with it, then!
which was the starting point of the discussion.
