You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

While on the way to Marconetti, the Princess noticed something in the distance. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a gigantic wild Behemoth.

And it's coming right for you.

>Congratuations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

Fortunately, your warning came while the charging behemoth is still a ways away... but the thing is still coming right at you and it's easily about three times the size of the ones that are pulling the carriages.

You're somewhat hopeful that this incident will pass without anyone getting hurt Since Sir Gregory's here, but you still open the carriage door so that you can get a read on the situation.

"Marianne? Melanie? Are you two alright?" you ask, turning to face the two girls inside the carriage.
"Y- yes, I'm fine..." the Princess replies, clearly distressed.
"I'm not hurt either," Melanie says, doing her best not to have a panic attack.
"Alright, then," you say as you peek your head outside the carriage. "Just stay calm, I think Sir Gregory's about to handle things."

Looking outside, you see the drivers of the two carriages doing their best to keep their own behemoths calm in the face of this threat. Nicolette's also out of the carriage, and Sir Gregory is staring in the direction of the oncoming Behemoth, filling the air with a stream of loud obscenities.

"Fucking hell, Vincent's the one whos equipped for fighting giant fucking monsters..." Sir Gregory mutters as he grips the pommel of his sword.
"But you -can- handle this, right?" Nicolette says with a worried tone. "You can just cast Buster Cannon or something and take it out in one shot!"
"No..." he sighs, "...if I was to use that, I have no fucking idea how far the beam would go. If it reached a town or something... I don't even want to think about that."

"Then what should we..." Nicolette says, her voice growing more and more uneasy the closer the behemoth gets.
"Nico..." Sir Gregory says as he produces a scroll, "...I'm going to cast Santctuary on you."
"Wha- why me, I should be out there with you-" she shouts in protest.
"-YOU- are the only one I can trust with this, you got it?" he places a hand on her shoulder. "The spell works on line of sight, and I can't target Thierri because his stupid ass won't be able to resist the urge to try and fight this thing himself if he leaves that carriage. And I need the target to be something that it'll be able to see, just make sure."

"Then just have Sylvie come out here and use her as the target!" Nicolette shouts.
"Dammit, Nico..." Sir Gregory sighs.

I THINK I see his plan here.

If he casts Sanctuary on Nico, and the beasty wants to eat Nico (which seems to be the case, along with the rest of us), it won't be able to approach us on account of the magical fuck-off protection bubble.

At least, I hope that's his plan.

"So what's the plan and how can I help?"

>>28148732

And yet its the safest place to be.
>>
>>28148669
Gregory casts Sanctuary on a person.
Everyone within the area is theoretically safe as long as the target stays within the spell's area of effect.

Buster Cannon is out of the question for someone like Gregory to use, it channels 1/3 of the user's base magical reserves into a beam of destruction. If Gregory was to use it, there's no knowing how far it would travel before finally dispersing.

One of the drawbacks of being stupidly powerful.
>>
>>28148800
It seems like a waste of a sanctuary, honestly.
>>
>>28148818

Sir gregory is.
>>
>>28148838

>>28148813

"If you need someone to target the spell onto, then I could always do it," you say as you exit the carriage.
"Reinhold, you would actually..." Nicolette says, looking at you in shock.
"I'd basically be the bait, right? I can do that."
"Dammit Reinhold..." Sir Gregory mumbles, sighing. "Whatever, if you insist."

"DRIVERS!" Sir Gregory shouts as he turns towards the carriages.
"Yes sir!" they reply, standing at attention.
"Move those carriages closer together, I'm about to use Sanctuary! And do it fast!"
"R- right away!" the driver of the Princess's carriage exclaims as he scrambles back into his seat and gets to doing as he was instructed.

After the carriage is moved and everthing is set, you follow Sir Gregory and Nicolette to a point a few yards away from the caravan.

"Alright, Reinhold. You volunteered for this, so let me explain what to do while we still have time," Sir Gregory says to you.
"Alright," you reply.
"Whatever you do, STAY IN THE FUCKING BOUNDARY. Aside from that, just make sure everyone else does the same and keep them safe. You're in charge until we get back, and DO NOT FUCKING LISTEN TO THIERRI. HE'S FUCKIN SUICIDAL ABOUT THIS SHIT," he says, pointing at you for emphasis.

With no more time to dawdle, Sir Gregory unfurls the scroll and lets the wind catch it.

"Sanctuary."

As the scroll is consumed by flame, the ground beneath you begins to shine with a brilliant light. Beginning about three yards or so in front of you, you notice that a border line has formed along the ground, extending around the area that the carriages are stopped inside.

"See that?" Sir Gregory says, pointing to the line. "Don't cross it until we've finished killing this Lindwurm."
"Got it," you reply.
"Nico!" he shouts. "Try to keep up!"
"Got it!" Nicolette yells back, a confident smile forming on her face.

Sir Gregory unsheathes his sword and lets out a deep sigh.

"Winds of the frozen north, let the swing of my sword call forth your might. ARCTIC BLADE!"

Slashing in the air with his sword, a wave of ice forms along its arc and flies towards the oncoming behemoth. After giving it a second or so to gain some distance, both he and Nicolette chase behind it at top speed.

"Thanks, Reinhold!" Nicolette shouts as she runs behind her father, her lance at the ready. "I owe you one!"

Honestly, if we can get the King not to run off and fight the thing with his bare hands like a MANLY MAN, I think we actually kind of want the King to be able to see.

Seeing Nico in action alongside her father against something that's actually impressive (as opposed to bureaucratic castle guard duty) will probably go a long way toward getting him actually thinking about that maybe she's a reasonable candidate for Knighthood.

And as long as things look like they're going well, it's probably our duty as her friend to hint at how awesome she's being in order to plant that seed in his head.

As Nicolette and Sir Gregory head out ot fight the behemoth, you turn around to check what exactly the area of this Sanctuary spell was that Sir Gregory used you as the focus of. The total area of the spell affects a circle of about four years away from the carriages in any direction. There's enough room to move around in without leaving the boundary and negating the spell, but it's close enough so that you can actually get a decent bearing of what's around.

With that out of the way, you head to the Princess's carriage and peek your head inside.

"Mr. Reinhold, what's going on!?" Melanie asks frantically.
"Y...yes, is everything going to be okay?" Marianne joins in.
"Nicolette and Sir Gregory went to go fight that giant behemoth," you reply. "He cast Sanctuary on me, so we should be fine as long as nobody leaves the boundary of the spell."
"...Nicolette's fighting it as well...?" the Princess says with concern. "I understand that she wants to impress her father, but now is not the time for that..." she sighs.

"But that's a wild Lindwurm," Melanie says under her breath. "It's really dangerous, not like the domesticated ones that we use to pull carriages..."
"What was that?" Marianne asks.
"Umm, I have some relatives who work on ranches so I know a little bit about things like this. Humans bred Lindwurms to be smaller and more docile than normal so they'd be manageable, but something that big would have to be a wild one. It's not as bad as if that was a Salamander out there, but they're still really dangerous... I hope they understand that."

"I see..." the Princess says, turning to you. "Have you already informed my father and Sylvie about the situation? It's too dangerous to just keep them in the dark..."

"Sir Gregory was actually worried that he'd rush out right away to go fight, so maybe it'd be better if you talked to him instead?" you say.
"Yes... that does sound like the kind of thing that he would do," Marianne says with a sigh. "And if Sir Vincent was here instead of Sir Gregory, they'd probably be out there right now fighting that Lindwurm together..."
"Yeah, I was kind of expecting as much from what Sir Gregory was saying."
"Very well, let's go... Melanie?"

"Um, yes?" Melanie replies, not having expected to be included in this conversation.
"Would you like to come with me? It'd probably best for all of us to be in the same carriage for now, anyways," Marianne replies.
"Umm, certainly!"

You then help the two ladies down and then walk around the carriages to the other one's door.

"Wild Lundwurms are very territorial, so that's probably why that one charged us..." Melanie says as she looks over to where Nicolette and Sir Gregory are fighting it.
"You're probably right, the Princess replies. "But first things first..."

KNOCK KNOCK

"Father? I'm coming in," Mariane calls out as she opens the carriage door.

Marianne opens the carriage door to the sight of Sylvie doing her best to keep the King seated.

"M- Marianne!?" Sylvie exclaims. "Could you help me here? Sir Gregory said to keep him inside this carriage, but he keeps trying to get out..." she says, sounding quite exhausted.
"Marianne?" the King says, turning towards his daughter. "Would you mind telling Sylvie to let me go?"

"Father, would you please stay in your seat?" Marianne asks.

"So I assume that you know what exactly is going on out there?" the King asks.
"I'll only tell you if you promise -not- to try and chase after Sir Gregory," Marianne replies.
"C'mon, Marianne..."
"Absolutely not. I mean it." she says, sternly crossing her arms.
"Alright..." he slumps down. "...you're just like your mother when you do that..."
"Thank you," Marianne replies. "Anyways, Sir Gregory and Nicolette have gone off to kill a wild Lindwurm that's trying to attack us."

"A wild l-" Thierri's eyes grow wide with shock. "Dammit, I need to be out there! It's a WILD Lindwurm! Not one of the little baby ones that pull our carriages!"
"SIT DOWN, FATHER," Marianne says, raising her voice. "You're the King, you can't just run off to fight monsters anymore. Anyways, we should all be safe, since -he-," she points to you, "is the target of a Sanctuary spell."
"Oh, hey Reinhold," the king says, waving to you.
"Hello, Your Majesty," you reply, waving back.

"Now would you mind moving over so that Melanie and I could sit down?" Marianne says as she enters the carriage.

Remember the rules of sanctuary.

It only deflects hostile intent against the target so we need to be seen.

So an attack which has no hostile intent against reinhold will pass through the barrier.

We need to focus its hatred and hungry on Rein if it gets that close.

No, WE specifically can't walk outside the barrier because it will collapse.

After both Melanie and the Marianne are safely inside the King's carriage, you turn around.

"You're not coming inside too?" Melanie asks.
"I'm the bait, remember?" you reply. "If the behemoth doesn't know that I'm in here, the spell's useless."
"Oh. Umm, take care then!" she says with a weak smile.

"I wonder how it's going out there, I hope they're doing alright..." Thierri says with a sigh.
"I'm sure they're fine," Marianne replies. "Sir Gregory may be a jerk, but there's no way that he'd allow Nicolette to accompany him if he wasn't confident in her abilities."
"Yeah, I guess you're right. Still wish I was out there helping, though."
"If you even try to get up, I'll freeze you to your seat," Marianne says in a stern tone.

"Umm, Reinhold?" Sylvie asks. "Would you mind me helping you keep watch?"

Pretty sure this would require higher brain functions that a territorial wild animal would lack. (e.g. being able to distinguish and single out one target to the exclusion of a second)

And presumably, even if it WERE capable of that kind of thought process, as long as we intended to protect Sylvie from the Lindwurm, it would be intent on harming us to get through to her, which would make the Sanctuary work as intended regardless.

>Or have her take off after Nico if something happens and not be able to stop her since we can't leave ourselves.

This is my biggest worry, if she takes off then the only one who would be capable of getting her back would be Thierri and if he goes he ain't coming back.
>>
>>28152873
If Nico gets seriously hurt, Gregory would go damn the collateral damage and fire his giant laser at the damn thing.
>>
>>28152859
The risk is basically nil, because no wild animal is going to suddenly think "I MUST EAT THAT GIRL, AND ONLY THAT GIRL, BUT MOST DEFINITELY NOT THE GUY STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO HER, HE SEEMS LIKE AN ALRIGHT DUDE". Unless we're secretly part dragon

The odds of that is about the same as it deciding to eat the carriage and everyone in it but not us for some reason.
>>
I'm honestly more worried about the thing getting knocked inside the barrier by a stray blast more than anything. I want everyone in the carriage just in case we need to get the drivers to take off and use our own sanctuary scroll to re-establish protection.

"Just stay put for now," you say. "I'll tell you if something happens."
"Oh... okay," Sylvie replies, sounding -quite- disappointed.
"And now you know how I feel," the King teases.

turning away from the door, you stand beside the carriage and focus your attention at the ongoing fight against the Lindwurm. You're somewhat surprised that Sir Gregory didn't just slay the thing outright by now, but then you remember his previous comments about wanting to avoid collateral damage.

"Nico, you alright!?" Sir Gregory shouts as he slashes at the behemoth's front legs.
"Yeah, I'm okay!" Nicolette shouts back, dodging a swipe of the lesser dragon's claws.
"Good, now get back!" he shouts as he draws his sword back. "Winds of the frozen north..."

Nicolette leaps out of the way just as her father lets loose a point-blank Arctic Blade right into the behemoth's face. Unfortunately, the attack only causes a shallow cut before exploding into an array of ice crystals, sending the beast reeling in pain.

"Fucking hell, the weak shit doesn't work and I can't use my main spells without risking hitting someone in the crossfire..." Sir Gregory grumbles to himself as he readies another spell.
"So what should we do?" Nicolette asks, positioning her lance for another lunge.
"I'm gonna catch its attention. You fall back and use Fragment Lancer for as long as that necklace I gave you can stand it."
"For as long as...?"
"Just don't overdo it so that you get burnt! Now do it!"

Doing as her father instructs, Nicolette jumps back out of the behemoth's reach as she pulls out her necklace and casts Fragment Lancer repeatedly, stabbing each new weapon it forms into the ground before casting it again.

"Over here, you piece of shit!" Sir Gregory shouts as he begins to float in the air. "Radiance of the heavens, gather in my hand and light my way!"

As the behemoth lunges at Sir Gregory in an attempt to bite him in half, the knight deftly glides out of the way and stretches out his arm right in front of its eyes.

"ILLUMINATE!"

A bright flash of light is released from Sir Gregory's hand, completely engulfing the behemoth's face for a split second. With a roar of agony, it thrashes about and swings in the air with its claws, unable to see where its enemy has gone.

"Nico! Now, while it's distracted! Throw those at the underside of its jaw!" Sir Gregory shouts.
"Alright!" Nicolette shouts back.

With aim honed through years of training, Nicolette grabs one of her makeshift spears in each hand and lets loose the second that the lesser dragon shows her an opening.

Two.

Three long pieces of jagged metal pierce the underside of the Lindwurm's jaw, causing it to roar in agony. It frantically attempts to knock the spears from where they are embedded, but it's prevented from doing so by the limited movement range of its front limbs.

Having finally regained its sight, the behemoth lets out another pained roar and searches for the one who caused it such agony... and then it finds her.

"Oh shit-" Nicolette gasps as she realizes that she's now the primary target.
"Nico, get out of the way!" Sir Gregory shouts as he drops the spell he had been casting and flies towards her as fast as he can.

Nicolette does her best to dodge the Lindwurm's attack, but its adrenaline-fueled rage has given it newfound speed...

"NICO!!" Sir Gregory screams, reaching his daughter just in time to get between her and the beast's claws.
"DADDY!!!" Nicolette shrieks.

It's up to you how to handle things either way, but setting a policy of counting unlinked votes just because they came after your story post chronologically only serves to encourage anyone who is posting during the run-up to a story post to leave dice on at all times in hopes of getting lucky and preempting a 1d20 request in the story post itself.

Kind of seems like the opposite of what you wanted to encourage in the first place.

>>
"...the hell is that knocking sound?" you say to yourself as you look around. But you don't notice anything.

You turn back around just in time to see Sir Gregory getting smacked through the air and into the distance.

"DADDYYYYY!!!!!" Nicolette shrieks as she watches her father rapidly disappear from view.

The Lindwurm lets out a triumphant roar as one of its enemies has been removed from the scene. It then turns back towards Nicolette, who was the initial target of its rage.

"You... you piece of shit I'm gonna fucking kill you..." Nicolette says through gritted teeth, tears streaming down her face.

But the Lindwurm cannot understand the words of men, and simply roars in her face as it raises its front limb to crush her. Nicolette roars back as she dashes to the side just in time to avoid being smashed into the ground, grabbing another of the lances she created and throwing it right into the beast's face.

Or rather, its eye.

Another roar of agony cuts through the air as the behemoth reels back and does its best to remove the lance from its bleeding eye. But Nicolette isn't done, timing her throws with perfect precision and piercing the beast's eye with her remaining two spears.

Blood pouring from its face, the behemoth desperately tries to slash at Nicolette with its claws. But it's to no avail, the sudden loss of an eye has ruined its aim. Frustrated by this sudden turn of events, it backs away from the enraged human before she can ruin its other eye as well.

"You... you're not fucking getting away, you hear me..." Nicolette growls as she readies her personal lance this time and races towards the behemoth.

Evading the beast's frantic attempts to KEEP HER AWAY, Nicolette quickly races up its body, makes her way to the top of its head, raises her lance in the air, and thrusts down into its bleeding eye socket as hard as she can.

With a roar, Nicolette stabs into the Lindwurm's eye as deep as her lance will go. Completely afraid for its life and utterly confused that a weak tiny creature such as this female is able to cause it such harm, it starts to shake its head frantically.

"Whoa-" Nicolette loses her footing, but still holds onto her lance for dear life... the behemoth can't tell that she's still there because she's in its (newly-created) blind spot, but she's still in a fair bit of peril...

...but her grip remains firm, and she doesn't let go of her weapon.

Too bad the lesser dragon's thrashing caused said weapon to finally become dislodged from its eye.

With a shout of surprise, Nicolette is sent flying through the air.

"SYLVIE! GET OUT HERE!" you shout as loud as you can.
"Wh- wha!?" you hear Sylvie's muffled voice call out as she scrambles to exit the carriage.

And then you turn to the behemoth, inhaling as deeply as you can.

"HEY YOU GIANT PIECE OF SHIT OVER HERE HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY!!!" you shout as loud as your vocal cords will allow, while jumping up and down and waving your hands as well in an attempt to get the Lindwurm's attention away from Nicolette, who is still airborne.

WHUMP WHUMP

"God damn it, what now..." you mutter to yourself. Your friend's in mortal danger, someone who you admire may well be dead, and yet ANOTHER thing is pulling at you for your attention.

"...oh shit what the fuck," you say as you turn around just in time to notice a massive bear with crystal growths jutting out of its body doing its damnedest to break through the invisible barrier that's protecting you and those who you've been charged to protect.

"Reinhold!? What's wrong-" Sylvie says as she stumbles out of the carriage... and sees the exact same thing that you just did.

As Nicolette falls through the air, she wonders how she'll get out of this one. She quit magic lessons before she could get to learning Starlight Wing or Zephyr Wing or Stardust Wing or any of the numerous flight spells that are out there... she makes a mental note to at least find a scroll for one of those if she actually gets out of this alive.

Uttering a chain of expletives as the ground approaches, she finds herself full of regrets. Never got to make Knight, never got to find out what her grandfather's glaive actually does, never got to tell her old man that she actually loves him more than anyone else who's still alive, never got to confess her feelings to-

"That was a close one, huh," a male voice says to Nicolette as she rapidly changes direction. She was falling down, but now she's going... sideways?

Looking to see what the hell's going on, she's elated to see...

"DADDY!!" Nicolette shouts, hugging him with her free arm. "H- how'd you- I mean, I saw you get hit-" she stammers.
"Shade Guard," Sir Gregory says with a smirk. "Absorbs the impact just fine, but you still get pushed back... anyways, let's put you down so we can finally kill this fucker.

Landing, Sir Gregory places his daughter on the ground a safe distance away from the Lindwurm, whose attention seems to be split between your shouts and its attackers.

"Looks like he's doing just what I asked," Sir Gregory says as he glances over to you. "I doubt you're interested, but if you are, I'd approve..."
"Th- this isn't the time for stupid jokes!" Nicolette shouts, flustered. "Let's kill this thing already before it does the same to one of us!"
"Yeah, yeah... Nico, stand back."
"Eh? But I'm not hurt or anything..."
"Yeah, I know. And I see that you did a good bit of damage there," he says, giving her a thumbs-up. "But this is starting to drag on, and I owe that piece of shit for making my daughter cry."

"SYLVIE!"
"Y- yeah! I can take care of this thing, don't worry!"
"Thanks, I need to get that behemoth's attention before it..."

And then you look back over just as Sir Gregory comes out of nowhere and catches Nicolette before she can hit the ground.

"...never mind about that," you say with a sigh of relief.
"Alright, Mr. Bear... I'd prefer to leave you alive, but I guess that's not an option here..." Sylvie says as she cracks her knuckles and walks up to the Sanctuary's boundary.

"Fragile gem, hidden from sight. Let your every facet reflect my will..." Sylvie chants, Script forming as she walks.

She then dashes to the side, exiting the Sanctuary's active area just out of reach of the bear's claws.

"Jewel Breaker!" Sylvie shouts as she extends out her hand while running to the side, forming a large crystal a few inches in front of it.

The crystal then shatters into several smaller fragments, which dart around all around the bear. It roars with confusion as it swats at them to no avail, as they dart around far too fast for it to catch. Then in an instant, the crystals converge on the bear all at once, exploding on all sides.

The crystal infection was always a naturally occurring thing. We learned that when we went to Niklaus' lab ages ago.

The only reason this is notable is because we JUST SO HAPPENED to aggro an angry crystal bear the moment we stepped outside. Now this may be a coincidence, I don't know how common angry crystal-infected bears are around these parts, but its something we should probably inquire about once this is over with.
>>

"Ehehe... I really am sorry about th..." Sylvie cuts herself off as the bear stands back up, albeit severely wounded.

It lunges at Sylvie with a roar, but she dodges it effortlessly.

"You know... Uncle Thierri and Uncle Raoul first met my father up in the mountains while he was fighting bears..." Sylvie says, grinning widely. "I always wanted to know what that was like."

The bear desperately tries to hit her with its claws, but Sylvie seems to be used to a lot worse. Finally growing tired of being on the defensive, she rushes in.

"The beats of my heart rumble like an avalanche, the ground itself trembles beneath my feet. Now crumble before my mighty fist!" she chants as she dodges a few more of the bear's swipes.

"SHOCK FRONT!" she shouts as she punches the bear in the chest and then dashes back out of its reach. It stumbles a few steps towards her, but then it lets out a cry of agony as its chest caves in on itself.

"I really am sorry..." Sylvie says, bowing her head solemnly before hurrying back into the Sanctuary's area of effect.

As the bear falls over dead, Sylvie smiles at you.

"I took care of it, just like you asked!" Sylvie says happily.
"Uh, yeah... thanks," you reply.
"Are Nicolette and Sir Gregory doing okay? You sounded really worried before..."
"Looks like I overreacted there," you say as you point to where they are.

Leaving Nicolette behind to watch, Sir Gregory floats into the air and towards the Lindwurm. It reels back initially, but then realizes that the male human isn't the one who stole its sight. Freed of its fear, it lunges at him, making sure that he stays in its newly halved field of vision.

"Arctic Blade," Sir Gregory says as he flicks his finger in the direction of the Lindwurm's open mouth, a wave of ice arcing out and slicing deep into its gaping maw before expanding into a massive explosion of ice.

"I'm done fucking around, you worthless fake dragon," Sir Gregory says as he unsheathes his sword once more and flies towards the behemoth as it attempts to bite through the ice crystals that now fill its mouth.

"Arcing light of creation, power of the almighty," Sir Gregory chants as he draws his sword back. "Crash down from the heavens and become my sword, so that I may strike down my enemies in your great name!"

Picking up speed, he flies directly for the wound that Nicolette made in the behemoth's eye.

"VAJRA SPARK!!!!" Sir Gregory shouts as he stabs his sword deep inside the Lindwurm's eye socket, releasing a massive explosion of electricity from his sword that pierces all the way through the beast's head, three prongs of pure electricity extending from either end of his blade.

The beast lets loose a final roar of agony as its body falls backwards, completely devoid of life.

"And that is how it's done," he says as he lands on the ground next to Nicolette.

Could you please stop with this idiotic fearmongering already?

The crystal does NOT grow on humans.

And NEITHER does that this crystal grows on a bear make it some sort of special crystal, because the crystal has ALWAYS grown on bears.

Don't believe me?
Go back to thread 28 and read it for yourself.
NIklaus says:
>I've never seen them growing on anything larger than a bear
From which folloes Niklaus has seen it grow on a bear.
From which follows even that type doesn't grow on humans.

And people want us to NOT use magic why exactly?
>>
>>28154318
He's just a little creeped out by the scene. Perfectly understandable.
>>
>>28154314
Normally they don't, but we don't know anything about the crystals, and our bracelet theoretically links us with crystals.
>>
>>28154329
Because mage is so overdone/not the style of character that Reinhold is. Nobody is saying that we shouldn't learn magic, the argument is more along the lines of Sword First.
>>
>>28154358
No, no, for a while there some people were seriously and very vocally suggesting we should not magic at all ever.
>>
>>28154358
We already have sword covered with lessons from the best swordsman in the country. They aren't being shown in story, is all.
>>
>>28154358

But this isn't that kind of setting. A "mage" in this world is just a person that doesn't know any other fighting skills but magic ones (and we know swording well enough for that to never even be an option). Everyone else use magic to supplement and enhance their martial arts. Is Sir Gregory a mage? Is Sylvie? Is Nicolette? They weave magic fluently into their fighting. We should strive for the same.
>>
>>28154388
Sylvie is totally a mage.
Nicolette doesn't even use magic.
What the shit are you shitting talking about you shit?
>>

Given that she's a magic user, that's pretty fucking impressive.
>>
>>28154280

After poking the Lindwurm's corpse a few times to make sure that it's actually dead, Sir Gregory and his daughter head back to the carriages.

"...the fuck is that? A bear?" Sir Gregory says, staring at the corpse that's lying just outside of the boundary.
"Yeah, it looks like it was drawn by the sound of you guys fighting," Sylvie replies. "But I took care of it!" she says happily, giving him a thumbs up.
"Heh, good job," he says, patting her on the head.

"You too, Reinhold. I was half-expecting you to run out to try and help after Nico got thrown, but you did the right thing," Sir Gregory says, placing a hand on your shoulder.
"Thanks," you reply. "I didn't really do much aside from stand here, though."
"No, I saw you get that Lindwurm's attention. If you hadn't done that, it might have tried to attack Nico before I was able to catch her."

"And I'd probably completely lose my shit if my little girl got hurt," Sir Gregory says as he pulls Nicolette into a big hug.
"...sorry for being such a jerk lately..." Nicolette replies, giving up any pretense of keeping up an image and hugging her father back tightly.
"Heh, don't worry about it. I'm a jerk, you're a jerk... it's in our blood."

"Ehehe, that's really cute," Sylvie giggles as she watches the touching scene. "Umm, is it okay to let the King out now? The danger's gone, right?"
"Huh?" Sir Gregory turns to Sylvie, finally releasing the hug. "Yeah, we killed all the dangrous shit so go ahead."
"Okay!"

Sylvie then hurries over to the King's carriage and opens the door... where she's met to the sight of Thierri pressed against the window, doing his damnedest to see the downed corpse of the Lindwurm.

"Sir Gregory says that it's all clear," Sylvie says.
"Seriously!? Alright!" the King shouts happily as he nearly tramples Sylvie to get out of the carriage.
"I really don't understand him sometimes..." Marianne says, sighing.

Marianne and Melanie exit the carriage shortly after the King, and everyone then congregates near the side of the carriages that faces the behemoth corpse.

>what will you say?
>>
>>28154405
Sylvie has more levels in face-puncher than mage. Remember that she only started training in magic a few months ago, and was only allowed to do so after her face-punching skills were considered acceptable by her father, who by all accounts pretty much wrote the book on punching things in their face.

After all the congrats are passed around, and maybe mild ribbing of his Majesty about his child-like glee at scrambling out of the carriage to go check out the Lindwurm corpse, I feel like we should probably mention this.

"I actually don't think the bear was drawn by the sounds of you fighting, or it would've been able to get through the Sanctuary. I hadn't even noticed it at first, but it was bashing on the barrier for a while before we spotted it. If I've got how Sanctuary works right, the fact that it stopped means it must've been after ME, right?

>>
>>28148813
Can we learn Buster Cannon?
>>
>>28154440
That certainly fits.
>>
>>28154521
I had figured that we were at the front edge of the barrier, we would've seen the bear if its initial approach was from either side, which means it was coming from the far side of the barrier on the other side of the carriages.

I feel like if it was going by smell or simple curiousity, it would've been after the behemoths, the drivers, or the people in the carriages first. But seeing as it was stopped by the Sanctuary even on the other side of the carriage wall, it had to have been after us for a reason other than our physical presence.

Dunno if that bit of deductive reasoning is A) accurate to reality, or B) even something Reinhold would put together at the moment, but I figured it would be worth asking about for the sake of clarification either way.

Either we learn something more about the living crystals, the mechanics of Sanctuary, or get a better summary of how things actually happened.

"Well, that was exciting," you say with a sigh.
"It certainly was," Marianne replies, sighing as well.
"Too bad I wasn't able to join in on said excitement..." the King says in a depressed tone.
"No, that's a good thing," she says.

"I'm seriously glad that everyone's okay, though..." you say. "I got really scared for you two while you were fighting that behemoth."
"Sorry for making you worry, man," Nicolette replies, patting you on the back.
"Yes... I was forced to work on a bit of a handicap there, which made things a fair bit more difficult," Sir Gregory says, sighing.
"You were both pretty awesome out there, though," you say.
"Thanks, Reinhold," Nicolette replies.

"And you too, Sylvie," you say, turning to face her. "I wasn't expecting you to just destroy that bear so easily."
"It was just a bear, after all... well, a crystal-infected bear," Sylvie replies, blushing slightly.
"About that," you begin, "do you think that maybe that bear might have been drawn out by this bracelet that Niklaus gave me to test out, do you?"

"What, the crystal thing?" the King asks. "The crystals don't affect their behavior, it's kind of like having fleas that make you stronger, I guess..."
"So it wasn't the bracelet?" you reply.
"I doubt it. I remember Niklaus saying that he gets his new samples from this area, and those crystals are just kind of a thing that happens... plus, they don't affect humans."
"Yeah, I punched that bear and my hand's fine. See?" Sylvie says, showing you the back of her hand,
"Oh, alright then... just trying to be careful.

The three of you continue to chat about various things over the next few hours before the conversation finally dies down and the girls drift off to sleep. You also let your mind wander for a long while, finally coming to upon seeing the tall buildings that signal that you've arrived back in civilization.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you to the Kingdom of Marconetti!" the driver says excitedly.

>[1/?]

The carriages pass through the large capitol city of the kingdom, heading for the castle where you'll be staying during yout visit. Unlike the lengthy amount of time it takes to get from the castle in Granache to the main city, this portion of the trip doesn't take long at all. As opposed to its neighbor to the south, Marconetti's castle is actually within the boundaries of the city itself.

"It's quite different from back home, isn't it," Marianne says to you, having woken up a short while ago.
"Yeah, it really is," you reply.

After a few minutes for the guards to check with the drivers that you are all who you say you are, the door to your carriage opens and the three of you are finally able to place your feet on firm ground once more.

"Welcome to Marconetti, your highness," a butler says as he approaches the King. "We'll handle your bags, so if you could come this way to the greeting room..."
"Certainly," the King replies as you all follow suit.

As you pass through the lavish halls of this castle, you find yourself stopping behind a long crowd of people.

"What exactly is going on?" Marianne asks, a bit annoyed.
"Ah, my apologies..." the butler says, bowing deeply. "...we've had many guests arrive within the past few hours, and I guess there's a bit of a backlog... if you'd mind waiting here, I'll go and see if I can speed things up for your party."

With that, the butler hurries off, leaving the seven of you in this crowded hallway. With nothing better to do, you look around at who else is here. There are people of all types, young and old, tall and skinny, lighht and dark...

...but then you notice someone.

Someone familiar.

And before you can turn away, your eyes meet.
