Only one or two threads left till break, I think. Hope those of you that are interested in the war era stuff are up on your prop aircraft!

and here:

and a pastebin short sheet here- it'll help you jump in if you want, if that's still a bit much, just ask in thread, I'm sure someone will help you out, and if one of the guys won't, I will.

You're out on the island, just below one of the ship's sea sparrow box launchers, watching the launches in the predawn twilight. You can't help but think that now would be the time for a smoke- if you smoked.

The intel brought in a few days ago revealed the massive build-up behind the lines, and gave the units in their defensive positions some time to prepare themselves for what, by now, everyone knew was coming. You hope it helped- the witch that brought it in, a Lieutenant Powers, was pretty badly dinged up, and is currently down in sickbay, grounded. Her strikers are beyond the ship's crew to repair, and you suspect they'll just be cannibalized and junked when they get back to the states.

The task force adopted a southerly course, taking position just off the northern coast of Germany, with the task force arrayed in a defensive posture around the carriers, while the national guard troops- the marines, along with general Porter, are still on Iceland- sailed on, and had begun disembarking, though there was no way they'd have made it in time.

1/3
>>
The first combat reports started just a couple hours ago- OP and LPs being withdrawn in the face of a massive soviet armored and mechanized assault. The air battle started simply enough, too- NATO SEAD aircraft launched with air superiority fighters against the soviet onslaught, both sides taking light losses early on. You're reminded of Tanana, honestly- the numbers are creeping upwards, with both sides forward staging their aircraft in an attempt to gain air superiority.

The task force's air element got it's orders a few hours ago- all four carriers have been launching their wings nonstop. While you're expected to return here, there's a full dozen alternates, all set up to receive aircraft from the fight and turn them around.

“F-Frank?” Merlin asks, hesitantly, from beside you- you didn't even hear her coming. “I-I put together a weapons list for us, if that's ok. A-and I talked to my sister some before she launched, she said she heard from someone that soviets are moving more of their flying dreadnaughts in.”

You nod, not able to speak over the roar of another pair of hornets, laden with mixed weapons packages, being launched. The intruders, alongside allied aircraft, are slated to hit ammo and fuel dumps, known depots, that kind of target, behind the lines. You don't envy them that mission- they're going in with escort, but it's likely to be rough.

You're slated to go in in about an hour- down below, the squadron is doing their various precombat rituals- Slider and Katya are going through the weapons, while Ice is in what you've dubbed 'hummingbird' mode- she seems to be flitting everywhere, checking everything, talking to everyone. Burying herself in her work to cover her anxiety. You can't help but note none of then have come to see you, though.

2/3
>>
They're not mad at you- well, not anymore. When you'd first landed after bringing home that witch, Ice had been under the impression you'd taken the twins and gone off without orders. Now, though, she's mad at the ONI spooks, who seem to be taking it in stride. Brigette, actually, ended up laughing about it when you ran into her, saying Ice was 'de mos angry witch I ever did know'. Kind of funny, coming from one of the semi-legendary SEAL team witches, you think.

Merlins loadplan is... surprisingly well rounded, you think, looking it over. Your nacelle bays carry AMRAAMS, giving you a total of four, while your dorsal bays are loaded with agile IIIs, for a total of eight of the deadly little missiles. Your centerline is the only one you're iffy on- she's elected to load the tesla cannon. While it could be useful- especially if there's dreadnaughts in the area, you'd get a lot more mileage, you think, out of more missiles- You could load sixteen agiles or eight more AMRAAMs in that bay, for example. But you're not sure how useful they'd be against dreadnaughts- you remember vividly the kind of firepower it took to kill them two over the Bering sea.

[x] Take Merlin's suggested load, I need to go (talk to Katya)

“How are the twins loaded, did you see?” You ask- you've got faith in your wingmate's capabilities to plan for themselves without you looking over their shoulder, even if that's what you probably ought to be doing. Command is a bitch like that, you think- as is evidenced by Ice trying to make sure everyone else is ready to go. Of course, you know, like she knows, that Slider will probably have done the same job already. For as much shit as she gives you, she's really the big sister to most of the girls here, you think. Well, kinda. She's the psychotic big sister. You've never had a problem with that though.

“T-they're loaded the same as us.” Merlin says. “I-I helped them plan it out. I thought it might be a good idea to carry the cannon for big targets, and the missiles we'll need if- well, if...”

“If it's as hairy as they said it was in the briefing?” You ask, making your way belowdecks, down to the hangar deck and your small space in it.

Merlin nods. “Y-yeah. Frank... if... if...”

You shake your head. “Don't ask for promises I know I can't keep, kiddo.”

She nods, but doesn't say anything.

Down below, you find Slider and Katya at a folding table- with plenty of room down here now, they're doing some basic upkeep on the squadron's weapons and loading magazines- a tedious task, regardless of how often you've done it.

1/2
>>
You take a seat next to them, reaching for a stack of unloaded mags- their short, box pattern indicates they belong to Ice's M-14. You shrug, nodding when Katya slides you a can of rounds, and start loading them in, silently thanking your patron deity that your father utterly insisted all his children be familiar with the M-14. Your mother, who'd carried one as well, agreed, and helped your dad teach all of you on her old rifle, which she- unlike your father- had been able to bring home.

Slider glances over at you, but doesn't say anything, just shrugs and continues stacking 5.56 magazines on the table- there's over thirty now, a slowly growing number. A few cans for the pair of 249s sit as well- Goose hated the minigun, which has since been sent back to Maryland for further testing and modification, and Katya's BAR is sitting this one out, it's round, even when enhanced, is just too slow for a dogfight. You hope she doesn't need it if those dreadnoughts turn up.

“Frank, you came to help?” Katya asks, sounding somewhat surprised. “I am thankful, as I am sure Comrade Rachel is, but do you not have other things to do?”

“Just came to see how you two were doing.” You answer, smoothly.

Katya snorts. “A likely story, I am thinking. You came down because you wished to look at Rachel and myself one more time before flying off into battle.”

2/3 (oops)
>>
Slider chokes back a laugh, cursing lightly when she drops a shotgun shell.

Katya grins. “I understand, of course, you are a hero, yes? Off to do glorious battle, and seeking his lady's favor?”

You tilt your head- something's coming and you're not sure you're going to like it.

“I refuse.” She says, flatly. “If I give it to you and you die, then you can die knowing at least I will be thinking of you. This way, I will know that if you die, you will remember I have been in more air combat than you and do not need checking on, unlike, perhaps, your cousin, who is untrained and with a damage control team on a carrier. Or perhaps your wingman.”

[] “I- uh... right. Lemme go check on Joe.”

You shrug, blowing off the 'advice'- you know the twins have their shit down, and it'll take one mother of an attack to actually hit the carrier group this time- lessons have been learned from the battle of the Bering sea.

“Actually, I just stopped by to make sure you two were loading extra for everyone.” You say. “I'd hate for you to fall behind.”

Katya snorts, and opens her mouth to say something, but you continue, cutting her off. “Besides, if I had been here to ask for a favor, I'd have been asking for Slider's.”

Katya's jaw shuts with an audible clack- but she grins anyway, and nods. “I see. Comrade Rachel?”

Slider laughs. “If I give this dink something, he'll assume it means I'm as smitten with him as you are.”

Katya cocks her head sideways. “You are not? You are doing a good job of acting then.”

Slider narrows her eyes. “I seem to recall some photographs I may ha-”

Kayta's eyes widen. “I-ah- I did not mean it like that. I am sorry.” She says, cutting slider off.

“Besides, what would I give you?” Slider says. “Underwear? I think knights carried a piece of lace or something, but only lace I own is stockings and that bla- wait, why am I telling you this?” She asks, rhetorically. “You ain't getting jack from me. Go ask Ice anyway.”

You laugh, setting down the stack of magazines. You did that in pretty good time, you think- about twenty mags.

“Where the hell do you keep all of these anyway?” You ask, looking at the mags. “Rex says he only carries, like, eight or nine, I think, and that's still more than a lot of guys.”

“Some of us wear vests, like the infantry.” Katya says. “But there are storage bays in the strikers for ammunition.”

You're about to answer when Ice walks up from behind you.

“There you are!” She says. “I've been looking for you. Is your fighter ready to go? You've been by the intel shop, right? They're predicting this will be a big one- maybe the biggest jet combat in...well, ever.”

If she's upset about anything, it's that Frank hasn't really talked to her since the Tomcat crash. Not about it, or about her being reassigned to someone else in the squadron.

Frank hasn't lived up to the ideal "hero" she saw him as when she was rescued. She was possessive of Frank, but Frank was never quite as receptive to those attentions.

>>28127463
The plane argument is one I'm not going to mess with, I said to punch out.

>>28127463
>>28127478
How are we playing them?

We've teased them sure, but I haven't seen anything past what friends would do normally.

Sure, we know some of them like us, but playing implies we did it on purpose, which I don't see. Plus, the whole war thing is not good for picking out a girlfriend, especially if they're in our squadron.
>>
>>28127427
Yeah, yeah we are. We charge headfirst into every single fight we can as long as there is something to protect, regardless of the odds of our survival, or whether or not it would actually be smarter to try something else.

As for the playing all the women part, oh you bet your ass we most certainly are. We haven't picked a single one while trying to curry favor with all three at the same time.
>>
>>28127518
>not good for picking out a girlfriend

>>
>>28127531

Have we been "currying" favor with Slider? Because if we have, I've missed it. I don't think we've taken her out to eat, or have we invited her any place. We didn't go along with her prank against the witches, and generally have spent more time with Katya and Ice on special events and such.

I think you're reading a bit much into things.
>>

Regarding your first statement, the most recent mission to get the recon witch safe. We did NOT go in howling for blood.

Regarding the second, my only disagreement is that it strikes me as more flirtatious than 'harem route' behaviors. 'Playing' has such negative connotations that I don't feel it as accurate. That said, by all means start a push to make a decision if it bothers you. Start voting to take one of the girls' interest seriously.

[x] Yeah, We're ready boss. And I loaded you some mags.

You nod, indicating the stack of mags and leaning back. “We're ready to go, Merlin already handed in a loadsheet and we drew our flightplan. The twins can handle themselves, Joe... well, there's nothing I can really say to or for him. Besides, the fleet will be fine. I figured I'd spend my time better by loading mags for you. But since you're here...”

You indicate Slider and Katya. “These two seem to think I should ask your for your favor.”

Slider sniggers, and you hear Katya snort. Ice blushes. “A favor?” She asks. “L-like I'd have one to give you anyway. Maybe some old canvas belt or something....”

“Oh for fuck's sake.” You say, exasperated. “All of you are bad luck. Merlin?”

Merlin looks up at you, confusion written on her face.

You get out of your chair and kneel in front of her, bowing your head. “M'lady, it would be a great honor to carry your favor into the coming fray.”

Merlin looks around, even more confused, and Slider hoots, falling out of her chair laughing. Finally, Merlin shrugs, helplessly. “I-I don't have anything...” She says.

I see it more as them looking out for each other. They're best friends, after all.

You stand back up, grinning. “That's ok, Sammy. Doesn't count when you're riding with me anyway.”

Ice pokes you in your good side, and looks over at Merlin. “Merlin, do us all a favor and get this guy through life support and everything before he embarrasses himself any more. You're good to go? I know your crew chief said something to me about a late night working on the jet...”

Merlin nods, tugging your wrist. “Y-yeah. Just some minor tweaks, stuff I noticed when we were helping that one girl.”

“Ok, good. Go ahead and get ready, then, and they'll be lifting your fighter while you're drawing your gear.”

The trip through life support is quick- your gear is already laid out and ready to go, it's just getting it all on. You tuck your gloves through one of your shoulder straps, stuffing your helmet and a pair of snickers bars in a flight bag.

Merlin, similarly equipped in her own scaled-down flight suit, meets you just after you step out of the bay, her slippers making barely a noise on the deck.

“Bare leg again?” You ask.

She blushes, but nods. “I-I have to now. The interface won't work through cloth, it needs skin contact. Like a striker. “

You grin. “Best damn striker in the fleet.”

I think at this point lancing the boil may be preferable to dragging things out any further. It'll cause a hell of an argument, but a serious talk with Katya is long overdue. There is actually a fair bit to discuss anyway given how she's been reacting since the crash.

But she's the one to make her interest known first and most strongly. Accepting or rejecting her, either way, would clear the deck. It's time for Frank to drop the harem hijinks and act like an adult. And frankly I think the characterization of everyone will benefit from that, not just that of whichever girl Frank does pursue.

I'm actually fine with how it's going so far in terms of development. Sure, I can understand why people are getting impatient on Frank' indecisiveness but I rather like the scenes that they have without the notion of just locking onto a route.

and when we do finally have to in which eventually we will, there will be enough development so there won't be too much of a backlash when we finally commit like what had happened in VMQ2

This so much, sums up my thoughts on this as well. Strikers feels more like a Story then a VN that some quest take on. Not saying that's a problem, PGQ is basically a VN but it works well.
>>
>>28128301
It's a latent thing. Georgette managed to survive several hours in the North Sea during the winter before Mack pulled her out, and she was no worse for wear aside from being ravenously hungry and tired.
>>
>>28128320
I don't know how much more "development" can be expected if we don't have Frank take some initiative. Ice and Katya have made their interest clear enough and Slider should be fairly obvious. Waiting around another dozen threads of Frank being oblivious won't really alter his own thoughts to each other. And even in a story you can drag a plot out way too long without a resolution.

I think after the upcoming battle is the appropriate time to force the issue. Frank and Katya need to talk about the crash in a serious way anyway. That will shift their understanding of each other, especially since Katya has clearly gotten out of her hero-worship of Frank. And they either become a couple, or recognize that they aren't suited for each other and shift into a new relationship.

Now I am not looking forward to the voting and arguing there, but I seriously think things will be better for the Quest regardless of which outcome prevails.
>>
>>28128416
>I think after the upcoming battle is the appropriate time to force the issue. Frank and Katya need to talk about the crash in a serious way anyway.

[x] Let's go through intel one last time.

“Let's head through intel one last time.” you say, leading the way to the intelligence shop. “Might as well be as up to date as possible, here.”

Merlin nods, following along.

Inside, you run into a harried ensign- probably one that's been dealing with pilots all morning. “You here before takeoff, sir, or just checking up on what we know?” He asks. “Sorry if I sound like an ass, sir. Been a long morning, and it's going to be a longer day.”

“Just before takeoff. I was here earlier.” You say, then smile. “And believe me, I know the feeling.”

He nods. “Nothing confirmed on the dreadnaughts yet, and they've got interceptors up enough that apparently we can't get recon assets in place to look. They've got some funky kind of jamming going on out there too, but it's stationary and localized on a few of their bases in Poland.”

“Funky kind of jamming?” You ask, and he nods.

“Yessir, similar to what was reported from the heavies at the battle of the Bering sea. We've tentatively classed them as dreadnaughts, but we're not sure. Other than that, their air coverage has been increasing, and it's all been modern stuff, not like the clunkers they gave the Iraqis or the shit in Alaska. We believe it's all guards air, too, none of their regional or regular forces.” He says, with a shrug. “Nothing other than that, sir. Weather is ok, though weather was saying we're due a rainstorm before long- big front, all over Europe it sounds like. “

“How are we doing?” You ask.

its a new flying carrier....
>>
He shrugs again. “It's too early to tell, sir, and we're not getting up to the second stuff from SHAEF.” he laughs, grimly. “I guess because they've got other things to worry about. The spooks are helping out, though. Sounds like the army could really use some help.”

You nod. “Thanks.”

He nods back at you. “Anytime, sir. Take care up there.” he says, turning his back to you- you forgive him the minor breach of conduct, since the man has to be hard pressed- just about every pilot on the sara probably came through here.

You're up on deck, marveling at just how empty it feels- the only aircraft still aboard, besides your wyverns, are the SAR helicopter and a pair of jets down for major faults- their crews working alongside their pilots to get them airborne for the fight.

Your walkaround, a matter of both safety and tradition, is quiet- with everything in the air, the traditional noise of the deck is absent. Neither you nor Merlin detect a single problem with your fighter, and she climbs up, setting her flight bag on her lap and dropping out of sight, leaving her hatch open.

You take a second to look around- returning the nod of the cat officer, before climbing into your fighter. Inside, on the control stick, there's an old canvas belt, a small piece of lace cut off...something... and a soviet aviation witch's cap badge. You smile at the favors, tucking them inside a pocket on your vest and pulling on your gloves. You can't help but wonder- who put them there? Well, not who, but in what order? How? Did they agree? For some reason, you feel a vague sense of unease and confusion at this.

You mentally shrug, working through the prestart checklist with Merlin, then starting the jet up off the power cart it's hooked to. You and the twins will be first off the deck, while the witches launch themselves off the waist- they rarely, if ever, use the cat sled they've got.

The kick of the catapult launch gets a grunt out of you as your ejection seat slams into your back- you tighten down your straps a bit more in response.

“Alright, listen up.” Ice's voice says as she and the rest of the witches take their spots at the lead of the formation in a loose chevron, you and the twins above them and behind by a few hundred yards. “Last intel said the airspace was getting hotter, but that the soviets weren't deploying that many surface to air systems. We think the SEAD missions have shut down a lot of systems, and that they're holding the rest for if they need them. The fighter coverage is good, but there's no confirmed sightings of witches.”

“None? At all?” Katya asks, sounding relieved.

“None. We’re not sure what's going on there, but just because we're launching and there's no Soviet witches up there doesn't mean we can get careless. Watch out for each other. That goes double for you, Warhound. Be careful, don't get separated. It's ongoing at all altitudes, but it sounds like most of it is low, below angels ten. There's two big targets- first, we need to make sure their ground attack aircraft can't get in to hit the army. Second, they'd like someone to open up a window so that we can get our own CAS birds in to go to work again. We'll target their ground attack aircraft first, their escorts are going to have trouble handling witches. Warhound, you and Mako pick your own targets.”

[x] “Roger, Ice. We'll get stuck in with you, then, and hit their ground attack aircraft.”

“Roger, Ice. We'll follow you in and hit their ground attack aircraft.” You respond, mentally going over your weapons list. “Are we missile free?”

You can see her shake her head. “Negative. It's too mixed up in there, and even the short range AA stuff is having trouble. Short range weapons only unless otherwise ordered for now. Intel said they were sending reinforcements though pretty regularly, so you may get to use those AMRAAMS either way.”

You call out feet dry minutes later- crossing the coast near Cruxhaven. The German countryside, at least, this far back from the line, still looks idyllic- the war hasn't reached here, yet. Looking down at the ground beneath you, you hope it doesn't.

As you get closer to Berlin, though, the more the war becomes evident. The local AWACS is doing his best, but he's overworked and barely has time to give you a vector to the general airspace, forget setting up an actual intercept. Ice leads you in on the deck, keeping you low and fast, to stay below any soviet radar. While the witches won't give a good return, and even the wyvern is supposed to be low observable, there's no point in testing that theory.

You rocket over Berlin, barely a thousand feet up, and into the fight, noting that the air is already thick with twisting contrails. Below, on the ground, columns of smoke climb skyward from knocked out tanks- the guards, instead of the all-out charge, are fighting smart, advancing across the open under friendly guns, supported heavily by artillery. Their ground attack aircraft, on the other hand, are behaving like madmen, ignoring the massive NATO air presence to dive in and release their weapons, only to be torn from the sky before even pulling out of their runs.

1/2
>>
“Jesus” you whisper to yourself, watching the witches break into their pairs and throw themselves into it, Ice and Slider breaking high to intercept another pair of birds setting up their run- while Katya and Rosalie follow them up, engaging the escorting migs.

You and the twins latch onto a pair of fullbacks, just out of their run, noting that these guys, while not on par with Konstantina, are good.

“Frank!” Merlin warns, as the fullback pilot slides under your gunsights, evading your shot again. “Migs are coming around! They're gonna get behind us!”

“Cheel, little sistah.” Alyssa says, trying on her Jamaican accent. “We goan mash dem up.”

The soviet aircraft recoil from the sudden attack, the ground attack stymied by the appearance of the witches and your two fighters. You finally nail the fullback, only to flip around on the tail of a sukhoi dueling with Rosalie- she's leading him on, flying backwards and firing while he's trying to line up on her. Your guns put an end to the discussion, eviscerating the fighter- the pilot riding a spear of fire skyward.

You can't help but wince a little at that one- his chances were equally good in a crash, you figure, given the fight on the ground. She tosses you a smirk and a sardonic salute before breaking off to look for new targets.

“Frank, targets inbound from the east.” Merlin says. “Heavy group, at least thirty plus, and there's a dread in there. I think there's two more inbound beyond that, but I can't tell with their jamming. I can boost the radar to try and see, but it'll probably make us a target.”

With the networked combat system, we can let the rest of our forces know what's coming, too. Maybe get some long-range support.

[x] Do it, we need to know what's coming.

“Do it.” you state, Flipping your fighter inverted and rolling out to get on the tail of a Fulcrum that's hounding a Luftwaffe aircraft. “We need to know what's coming- shoot the data to the rest of the unit too.”

“Ok Frank, I'm on it.” Merlin says.

The Mig pilot breaks off, abandoning his pursuit of the phantom, who withdraws to the west, his aircraft hit in a few places and his weapons hardpoints empty. You stay on the mig, Finally getting guns on him and chewing his fighter apart. The little mig simply disintegrates under the hail of 25mm cannon fire, coming apart like someone stuck it in an industrial grinder.

“Ok Frank, got a fix. It's two more dreads, the first one is slowing their approach so all three of them will arrive at the same time. I can't get a solid number on the other bandits, looks like sixty plus. The Luftwaffe is scrambling reinforcements, they should be here around the same time. We won't be outnumbered that badly but-”

“We'll be outgunned.” You state. “Call it in.”

Behind you, Merlin starts calling in her information to the non-networked units, while you link back up with the twins, looking around for the rest of the witches.

You're in a knife fight with a mig when the dreadnaughts enter view, flying in a loose vee at no more than five thousand feet up.

Yep. A character is intended to deliver narrative, and if a better story involves the death of said character, then let it happen.

I don't have a favourite character, although Mav has been pretty coo'.
>>
“Frank we're being painted by at least half a dozen- Missiles! Missiles in the air!” She calls, and you can feel the jamming- you grunt, knowing that trying to throw off that much shit, anything this early won't get you anywhere.

Instead, you hammer the throttle to the stops, your turbines roaring as they're unleashed, burning a hundred pounds of fuel in an instant. Your fighter rockets forward, it's tails folding and wings tucking in, it's designed high speed aerodynamics making it slice through the air as fast as friction will let it.

Your fighter will take the abuse physics will put on it, you know, and your decoys handle the missiles you can't defeat. You dive in response to a cry from Merlin and a maser passes over your head, colored in a brilliant, neon red by one of your sensors- not visual, part of your brain thinks idly, since aren't masers supposed to be invisible?

Either way, those dreads are a threat, but that many fighters could tip the balance too. Hard decision- the girls could handle the fighters, and will, no doubt, but the numbers are kind of long and you've been at it a while- well, a while for a dogfight like this.

[] Get on the fighters! No way I'm letting them through without taking some of them down.

Unlock all missiles so the girls can call them down if they need them, and feed as much data as we can to friendly units. They threw all those missiles at us, how about we return the favor?

Some harpoons from second string sea air assets would do good things against dreads. Now that they are painted, some surface to surface love from the fleet should be in bound.
