The Elder Things were bodiless autistic minds that happened to pop a squat in horrible giant mollusk thingies.

They said "fuck this" and projected their minds to the future, where their evil is law. Now the fools seek to return to the past and undo the evil that is Aku.

All kidding aside, that was literally their backstory.

A fight with something you couldn't damage or see would be much more terrifying than, well, almost all the bosses.

What I've always hated about the Lovecraftian 'horror' genre is that even as far back as the source material (At the Mountains of Madness for example) in practically EVERY instance of there being one of these giant monsters showing up they are conveniently so terrifying and horrible looking that they are indescribable and drive whoever beholds them mad.

I fucking hate it and it always seems like the people that are afraid of Lovecraft are the same people that are terrified by space/the ocean where they never know what they will find.

I.E. stupid people.

The most horrifying thing in the Lovecraft universe is the lack of descriptors and overuse of random tentacle monsters and deep sea cop outs fuck you.
>>
>>28115348

>lovecraft

>lack of descriptors

You've never actually read any lovecraft, have you. He has often been criticised for an overuse of descriptors.
>>
>>28115348
my main gripe is that I think Lovecraft grossly underestimated what humans are capable of coping, adapting, and eventually trivializing. Sure, such horrors may be horrors at first, but not for very long.

>>
>>28115348

Lovecraft was just a dude who was scared of niggers and the ocean, and not a particularly excellent writer.
>>
>>28115419
Quite. There are alot of horrifying things that people can learn to cope with, going bugfuck insane just at the sight of some ugly critter is kind of unrealistic.
>>
>>28115429
Both of which aren't fucking scary the hundredth time they are employed as the monster's appearance
>>
>>28115475
You've obviously never even read Call of Cthulhu. That description is only used for Cthulhu, and only the three times: the statue, the relief, and Cthulhu himself.
>>
>>28115384
His descriptions are a lazy mashup of features that leave the reader with little to no tangible mental image of whatever it is, usually aside from tentacles, mouths, and eyes randomly placed on a monster face / mound of flesh.

It's the written equivalent to looking at a giant mass of scribbles and picking out random figures from what you see.
>>
>>28115495
Not necessarily blaming him so much as the fanbase that ensures that little to no divergent monster designs are used in the modern game / etc adaptations.
>>
I find all that lovecraftian universal horror stuff a tad too... defeatist?

We do live in a vast and uncaring universe but its no reason to fantasize the universe is actually filled with/is untold greater entities that are disdainful at best of our presence and we shouldn't try to expand our knowledge at all because learning anything about the universe would destroy our feeble minds like a watermelon under a sledgehammer.

You guys are good at coming up with story ideas. I have hundreds of photos from inside an empty school, and because I'm nerdy I want to turn them into an English-language visual novel. And I mainly like horror in the fashion of Lovecraft and other Weird Fiction.

Some ideas:
>A story where you are a journalist investigating a bizarre murder suicide by a student. You find his / her diary and discover that the victim was experimenting with novel combinations of drugs, and found one particular mixture that allows him/her to communicate with an entity from another realm. The person gradually started getting more and more attached to this entity as the rest of their live starts to go badly. Ultimately the entity convinced the person to perform a grotesque ritual to transport their consciousness into his dimension. It's left unclear whether it is real or a figment of her imagination. Ends with the main character experimenting with the drugs and hearing the voice himself.
>A story where the main character starts to slowly and unknowingly get possessed by some entity. You are offered a lot of choices in the game, but these choices begin to railroad you into doing certain unusual actions which lead up to your character attempting to summon the creature from another dimension that has been controlling them into this world
>Something similar to The Drifting Classroom manga, where one day the school is vioently yanked out of our world, and left in a terrifying alien landscape swarming with terrifying creatures beyond human understanding. Now everyone must find a way to survive with their limited resources.
>A sort of Groundhog Day-style story where your character starts reliving the thirty minute lunch period of a day over and over again. Each time the thirty minutes is up, your character goes completely insane and begins horrifically murdering the person nearest to them. Your character must now figure out the mystery of what's happening.

Your suggestions?
>>
>>28115702
There's a difference between "Humanity Fuck Yeah" and "Knowledge is pointless and should be avoided since human minds are incapable of obtaining it without going insane". It seems to be the mindset of a very limited individual.
>>
>>28115614
But that's the horror of it. We're fucked six ways to Fhtagnday, and the harder we try to escape that fate, the quicker and nastier it will be. There is no Good End.

I tried to talk to a few people around here about just what makes these abominations so terrifying and insanity-inducing but no one actually explained anything. The answer was just a cop-out of "they are so vastly different that you cannot comprehend."

That "cannot comprehend" thing is the biggest pile of bullshit. If you can't comprehend something, it doesn't turn you into a gibbering idiot. In fact, it can't have any affect on you because you can't fucking comprehend it, you can't understand it or interact with it beyond a few basic human methods. A lack of understanding only drives someone mad after years of obsession and that's the sort of person that Lovecraftian horrors would genuinely be able to corrupt; introverted intellectuals who obsess over the mythos.

I'm sorry but Godelian Shock Input isn't real, let alone this level of stupidity. If people go insane within a few seconds of seconds, just admit it and say it's because of some psychic field or some shit, not the ineptitude of the human mind and the inability to understand something at first glance.
>>
>>28115870
I've always assumed it was because of some psychic field. Like that looking upon them you couldn't comprehend them and you go mad, not because they look horrifying but because you are mentally overwhelmed by their presence that the human mind is unable to process or resist their psychic influence.
>>
>>28115811
Maybe my wiki-fu s too weak, but, is there a way to "hear" it?
>>
>>28115870
I agree with what you are putting forth. It really is silly.
Like if you go insane because the alien has psychic power and they damaged your psyche that makes sense, but saying that your mind shatter because you took one look at an ugly monster is weak,
Lovecraft was not a shining example of humanity and it comes through in how he expresses such shortcoming in all of humanity and their efforts.

I think the problem is that you're thinking the creature just looks ODD.Like maybe you cannot discern it's anatomy?

Well, that cant be it, plenty of things cannot be discerned at first or second glance,- ergo, what Lovecraft referred to must be something beyond mere flesh and bone -but 'existences' that your brain cannot rightly -see- like left angles going into wrong directions, a warping of space and reality, non-euclidean geometry and all sorts of things that are -not right-.

This is what he probably refers to.

Gazing upon this , perhaps drives your brain mad, unable to comprehend what you see, like a computer that got a looping error.

the text says "The Thing cannot be described—there is no language for such abysms of shrieking and immemorial lunacy, such eldritch contradictions of all matter, force, and cosmic order. A mountain walked or stumbled. God! What wonder that across the earth a great architect went mad, and poor Wilcox raved with fever in that telepathic instant? The Thing of the idols, the green, sticky spawn of the stars, had awaked to claim his own."

He got over it, but still wrote about it.

In the early 190's, we weren't inundated with horror movies, books about horror, or cosmic revelations that were bad for you. No, his works haven't aged well, but we're talking about people whose level of sophistication were ridiculously lowered in comparison to ours. You couldn't go out and rent a DVD of people having sex and murdering each other, or an animation where someone's body grotesquely morphs into a monster.

People who deride his work are jaded and think "oh, it's not so bad, humans can cope with so much worse than what he describes" because they have a higher tolerance for violence, unnerving imagery, and suspense than the average person in the early 1900's.

The original movie The Thing hearkens back to how humans react when faced with truly alien INTELLIGENT life. The react badly and underestimate the hell out of it. MacReady in the story was the smartest man in that entire camp and he barely survived it. (Yes, he knew instantly that Childs was the Thing when he and Childs were the last survivor. Only a Thing would accept a bottle of whisky someone else drank from without concern.).

Here's the deal. Lovecraft was writing from the point of view of a white, relatively well off New Englander after the first world war. WWI ripped giant holes in the cultural fabric and led to all sorts of reactionary art movements, Dadaism being both one of the most prevalent and most horrifically misunderstood by the average internet-goer. From Lovecraft's point of view, the appearance of a pile of fish guts, tentacles, sexual orifices, and eyeballs wasn't what drove you insane, exactly. Most of the crushing revelations that bring insanity come from witnessing such a creature, or learning that some some blasphemous cult had the right idea, and then extrapolating from there. If Cthulhu is real, or Azathoth is real, there goes the idea of a kind, loving God, or an orderly creation, and that takes the legs out from the structure of most contemporary people's world view. It was the revelation that everything you knew was completely wrong, that reality didn't have a meaning, that there isn't a benevolent deity, or even some actively malevolent force that has it out for humanity - that there is only a vast, protean universe that DOES NOT CARE that you live or die.

THAT is what scared the fuck out of Lovecraft, and that fear and realization was what drove the art movements he was unwittingly part of.
>>
I found Lovecraft and others inspired by him imaginative, but not truly scary.
It often relies quite a bit on repeated driving home that the universe is a chaotic, uncaring place where all lives are insignificant, which I'm sure must have seemed terribly revolutionary when practically everyone in America reading it was a 1930's Protestant, but I basically figured that out when I was seven, so it's just sort of repeating facts.
>>
>>28116587
And while he was quite imaginative at times, I should quite a few people already are aware of this today.
I know several relatively faithful Catholic and Protestants who believe much the same thing, because they sure as shit know God isn't going to do anything to help them out, ever.
>>
>>28116587
So what are you saying, that if you think the mythos stuff is scary you are a backwards pansy?
>>
Can we yet agree that Lovecraft hasn't aged well?
>>
>>28116587
That and being black.
>>
>>28116633
No, that's certainly not true.

>>
>>28116641
I think that its generally accepted that people stop aging when they die.

Tombstones don't say "Died at age 51 and counting."
>>
>>28116587
What also seemed to send shivers up Lovecraft's spine was the idea that a member of the civilized white master race could be related to niggers or gooks. Or fish...

If you think the existential concept behind Lovecraft is scary you're probably going through a religious crisis, are awakening to the concept of a random universe, or just get the heebie-jeebies at the ridiculous scope of creation. So, by 4chan standards, yes.

>>28116645

Well, yes. Lovecraft used sex, fish, and minorities as shorthands for "horrible foreign things that break pre-established conceptions."

I find it interesting to note that Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan and Lovecraft's favorite pen-pal, basically wrote about the same kind of stuff when it came to monsters and cosmic things from beyond.
But while Lovecraft (who was afraid of the ocean and passed out when it got too cold outside) had his heroes go nuts or pass out, Howard (who was 6'1'' and a boxer since college) had his heroes flip out and kill the thing instead.

"God is the only divine force in creation" is the foundation of your worldview.

Suddenly a whole bunch of things that could arguably called gods start running around and shitting all over your puny metric of reality.

Any chain of logic you've built up after "God is" ceases to apply. Therefore, everything that depends on that to exist is wrong, in that it assumes God was the only thing.

This is how Lovecraft's mind worked, yo, I'm not saying it's master-class philosophical arguing.

Howard was also racist, but he explored it in a totally different fashion: it was more this Darwinist "all races must fight to survive" mentality in his writing, and while often Caucasian civilization was predominant, he always kept driving home that it's still pretentious and ultimately will be wiped out by mankind'd natural barbarous nature.

The amusing thing is, often Conan doesn't truly KILL these things, he just uses wits and cleverness to outwit and contain/eliminate their threat. Conan stories frequently have heavy horror elements in them.
Sorcery also works as it does in Lovecraft's stories, namely that it's weird unnatural shit, and mankind does NOT have some X-Men like ability to manipulate energy or "ambient magic fields" or whatever, and anyone who CAN just ignore the laws of reality is probably pretty much inhuman himself.

Doesn't fucking work that way if you are still tied to a planet in which the scientific method has already made some damn-near irrefutable proof of there still existing immutable truths about how reality functions on that planet.

It seems that this kind of thing would only frighten the truest of true believers.

It's literally no different from discovering that aliens are real, even in the religious sense considering a singular God or Gods would still technically be extra-terrestrials by our definitions.

Still not all that terrifying other than the fact that we found a way to pique their interest in Earth (or whichever diamond dozen cult H.P. was so enamored of inserting).

The Norse worldview was pretty much "Humanity and its gods came into being randomly, are utterly doomed despite their best efforts, the things from other worlds are bigger and tougher then even our gods, are made of unnatural matter [in many cases], and soon will come and fuck us up"

Yet the result was the exact opposite of Lovecrafts "Herp, everybody's goin insane!"

Shit. And from a theological point of view, just being strong, from another world and worshipped isn't enough to make you a god. To be "God" you have to be a very specific set of things.

The Horror: the unnatural, spiders the size of bears, the dead waking up and walking around, it's when the lights go out and something with claws grabs you by the arm. And the last and worse one: Terror, when you come home and notice everything you own had been taken away and replaced by an exact substitute. It's when the lights go out and you feel something behind you, you hear it, you feel its breath against your ear, but when you turn around, there's nothing there...” - Stephen King

Right, Lovecraft was just as freaked by the rampant potential of the industrial revolution and the constant update of scientific theory as anything else.

Also, Lovecraft was an atheist, possibly a follower of Classic Mythology. And most of his family members went insane and died. He was also a dirty racist opposed to the "dilution" of races via miscegenation (hence the Deep Ones), but I think that has to do more with african americans being "decultured" and "americanized" rather than JUST because they were black. He supposedly had a lot of respect for the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians. It's all about the "mental, moral and physical degeneration" with HPL.

"Howard Phillips Lovecraft, heaven knows, had a talent for writing which was of no mean proportion: only what he did with this talent was a shame, and a caution and an eldritch horror. If he'd only gotten the hell out of his aunties' attic and obtained a job with the federal writer's project of the WPA, he could have turned out guidebooks that would have been classics and joys to read forever. Only he stayed up there muffled up to the tip of his long gaunt New England chin against the cold which lay more in his heart than in his thermometer, living on 19 cents worth of beans a day, rewriting (for pennies) the crappy manuscripts of writers whose complete illiteracy would have been a boon to all mankind, ah, but life is a boon, and producing ghastly, grisly, ghoulish, and horrifying works of his own as well — of man-eating things which foraged in graveyards, of human/beastie crosses which grew beastlier and beastlier as they grew older, of gibbering Shoggoths and Elder beings which smelt real bad and were always trying to break through thresholds and take over; rugous, squamous, amorphous nasties abbetted by thin, gaunt New England eccentrics who dwelt in attics and who were eventually never seen or heard from again. I once experienced what is possibly the closest thing to such a feeling as I'm likely ever to. Just pure mindfuck. I have synaesthesia of scent, so scents are translated into colours in my mind due to overlap of sensory parts of the brain or somesuch. Anyways, once went to visit my sister's apartment and there was this rich red candle on her table and the room smelled the exact same colour. Naturally I assumed the colour was due to the candle because human brain is funny like that. Then she lit the candle and it was lime green in smell.

Just sat there while my brain tried to figure out what the fuck was happening for a solid twenty seconds. It simply could not comprehend what was going on.

Weirdly enough Robert E. Howard wasn't nearly as manly as you're making him out to be either - he too was a shut-in who lived with his mother, died very shortly after she did and may or may not have had sex. Lovecraft at least married a Jew.

Ok, this thread reminded me of something I have spent years looking for, but with no success. Perhaps someone here will know something.

My dad and I were once discussing Lovecraftian myths and such and he commented that somewhere he read that something slept/dwelled/whatever in, of all places, Oklahoma. And that whatever this was, it was so big and bad and terrible that Cthulu himself was scared to fuck with it. I asked him to elaborate on this thing, but that was all he could remember, no names or source.

Has anyone else ever heard of something along these lines?

If you cannot rightly see something, then that means you cannot see it. So, your human mind is literally incapable of perceiving these creatures. This does not mean you go mad from seeing them. At worst, it might mean that you don't understand what you see. It's confusing and shocking and once a human had managed to either escape from or kill such a creature, he'd probably be shaken or traumatised. Just how much it impacts them likely depends on the sort of person who saw the alien creature.

The likely-hood of immediately going irredeemably insane upon observation of one of these creatures is extremely low, however. Brains aren't capable of just crashing like that, even when presented with truly confusing things.
>>
>>28117591
Yig, I'm pretty sure.
>>
>>28112164
You're mixing Eldar Things and the Yithians. Yithians transferred their minds from their original forms to the conical mollusc-things to escape their dying planet, and then proceeded to bodyswap with people across space and time for fun and science.

Elder Things are starfish-headed aliens that arriver on Earth billions of years ago, build a vast empire using bio-engineered blobs of shape-shifting slime as slave albour, and accidentally created life as we know it on Earth when some of their biology experiements, crops or lifestock got in the wild and went feral. Eventually their slave-blobs rose up against them and ripped their heads off.

Nyarlathotep appears in human form much more oftne than he does in a tentacled horror form, tho. And the tentacled horror form is just another of his "masks" or avatars, like the human forms. I doubt he even has a true form considering that he is supposed to literally be the soul of the Outer Gods.

Another time I woke up and my fingers felt thick, so I stared at them, flexing slowly, trying to figure out why my body was telling me my hands were several centimeters wider than they visually appeared.
>>
>>28115870
The whole "go mad from seeing it" thing tend sto be overplayed in later adaptions, and doesn't really occur all that much in Lovecraft's own work. Hell, of the sailors that accidentally wake up Cthulhu, only one becomes a gibbering wreck, and even that is not so much due to looking at Cthulhu and immediately goign made and more due to the stress of being chased by a mile-high monster that by all right should nt and could not be able to exist. The other survivor gets seriosuly traumatised by the experience, but is still able to function. The only case of really going mad from just glimpsing something is one of the survivors in "the Mountains of Madness", who gets a look at the thing beyond the mountains (confirmed by HPL to be one of the Great Old Ones), which is enough to push his already traumatized mind over the edge.

Mmost people who encounter Eldritch horrors in Lovecraft's writings end up traumatized from seeing impossible thigns their mind struggles to comprehend and having their world view shattered (but don't immediately turn into gibbering madmen),which seems like a pretty reasonable response. If people get PTSD from being involved in a nasty accident, you bet they'd get from running into an incomprehensible horror from beyond stars.

Deer-in-the-headlights is a far more realistic reaction and the one most likely to get you killed unless you're lucky. The brain encounters a situation so outside of its projections that it simply shuts out all potential responses and waits for a familiar landmark to react to.
>>
>>28118200
Of course, part of the problem is that so many people think collapsing into a gibbering wreck is the only option upon hitting 0 SAN.

In a way, your Sanity score is how much you are in tune with the beliefs and morality of modern society. At 0 SAN, you now know that what you've been told your whole life is a harmful lie, worse than pointless.

What you do with this knowledge? That's up to you.

Many 0 SAN people realise, "hey, good and evil are merely words. These things offer actual power, and there's no horrific fate awaiting me if I help them out, or at least no horrific fate worse than that which is already awaiting me." and boom, you've got a cultist.

Others might realise the inhumanity of what they're facing, and the sheer power of it, justifies any extreme towards the goal of keeping humanity safe. Torture and murder are not only justifiable. Mass murder is justifiable. And the most sensible option.

SUBTLE
>>
>>28118757
Everyone's the product of those self-same tar monsters.

Well, more their source in actual fact.

All of humanity was made for food, or as a joke, or by accident.

The point is we're not special, we have no greater purpose. We simply are.
>>
This thread fucking exploded overnight.
>>
Think about it, almost none of the protagonists in lovecrafts stories turn into gibbering wrecks. Some call themselves crazy, some are institutionalized but they're all telling their story.

And its not seeing the monster that words have trouble describing accurately (partially due to alienness but, again think about it, mostly due to fucking panic), it is the implication of seeing the monster that comes after.

You find out your great uncle wasnt mauled by a bear in his own attic, you find out all the weird shit about seeing things through mirrors and prisms wasnt all crazy. Then you find out that the rabid flying turbo-shark that travels through time actually lives in EVERY 90 degree angle in you house and is now looking for you.

Having a nervous breakdown because you know for a fact that the inside of every corner is a portal through which an interdimensional hitman can arrive is perfectly resonable.

As is having trouble describing said hitman which inhabits more dimensions than the 3/4 you can percieve (and perhaps only partially inhabits your set).

The insanity part comes alot from, as someone mentioned, the later adaptations and the RPG. The a mechanic to handle the stress of monster hunting that got overplayed to silly levels, and authors getting hung up, on not the protagonist, but the sailor who hung out with him on that horrible ride.

Well that, and its a resonable reaction for people to think you are crazy when you inist you are being hunted by a timeless hound and must spend your days in a spherical room lest it get you.

Hell most things people do in horror, that doesn't get them killed right away, is considered at the very least extreme behavior by people who aren't briefed on the situation.
>>
>>28119448
Yeah, people go insane in Lovecraft far less often then the game would have you believe. And when they do it's more of a crippling depression rather than the gibbering insanity people like to envision.

Besides there's still some badasses in Lovecraft. I mean Randolph Carter went through some serious shit and he still basically told Nyarlothotep and Hastur to go fuck themselves and then did a triple barrel somersault into deep space so he could teleport back to earth while flipping off Azathoth. He could also speak with cats and his best friend was a flesh eating ghoul. And that's before he had tea with Yog-Sothoth and became a time traveler.

There's also Professor Armitage who at the age of 70 climbed a mountain and then fought off the giant invisible son of Yog-Sothoth with nothing but a blowgun, two friends, and a few pieces of paper.

After this thread, I've come to the conclusion that the lovecraft-verse is kinda... boring.

There's massive horrors from incomprehensible origin that exist seemingly to just fuck around.
Humans are jokes/pawns/irrelevant
There is no hope of destroying these great evils and you might not want to anyway.

So the exciting stuff comes from the mystery and investigations, but discussion about mystery is the very thing that ruins it.
>>
>>28119832
>Humans are jokes/pawns/irrelevant

Eh not necessarily. We just gotta start reverse engineering all the badass alien technology that keeps getting left on Earth. See how Cthulhu likes it when we travel back in time using Great Race tech and blast R'yleh off the face of the planet with Mi-Go weapons.

Plus the humans in the Dreamlands are pretty badass.
>>
>>28119745
Well then I guess you have no excuse.
>>
>>28119832
An important thing to note is that they're not evil. They just are. They destroy us not because they hate us, but because we don't even register to them as important or even sapient.

As you say, humanity doesn't matter, in the big picture. But investigators don't look at the big picture. We want to protect our existance, we want to live to see tommorow.

Some of the entities, the small and the most human, can be dealt with, with guns and other weaponry. Many of them don't wish to be seen as they consider us rather backwards, in that we still care about things like morality.

Of course, the real threat, the real danger arn't these creatures. But the cultists. You see, humanity doesn't matter to these creatures. But the cultists, they think they can change that. They think that by attracting their attention, by proving themselves useful, they can make deals.

They're like Cargo cultists, seeking manna from heaven by building air strips. And rarely, if they're very very unlucky. They succeed.

That's what investigators are for. If nothing else than to protect our loved ones, we go out into the night to stop some idiot making deals with horrific monsters, or attempting to raise up something they cannot put down.

The Conan series are classics. I'd pick up his El Borak series too - about a Texan gunslinger who runs in the rugged hills of Afghanistan in the late 19th century and a brief foray into Arabia into the 20th here and there.

I'd consider REH and Harold Lamb to be the primary inspirations of my writing style. If you know it from another thread, I'm mister purple prose

Actually go look up Harold Lamb's Iron Men and Saints + Flame of Islam (Crusades) or his book on Tamerlane and Genghis Khan.
>>
>>28127192

Meant to add more. Harold Lamb is fantastic, guy knew English, French, Latin, Arabic, Persian, was a screenwriter and technical advisor for a 1930s film of the Crusades.

The Flame of Islam and Iron Men and Saints, as well as his other historical biographies are this curious marriage of historical tome and adventurous narrative. I suddenly realized a few seconds ago it's almost like a modern day Herodotus or Thucydides or the like in how it tells you history while reading like a novel.

What I particularly admire is that this author of the turn of the century deals with his characters more evenhandedly, respectfully and realistically than most modern and hyper partisan authors do. He doesn't demonize the Crusaders and lionize the Saracens or vice versa, you sympathize and root for Saladin or Baibars as well as Godfrey of Boullion or Raymond IV or Baldwin. Nobody is a 2d caraciture.
>>
The main thing people don't really seem to understand about the basic idea of Lovecraft horror is it's pretty much "Something that makes no sense to you is going to kill you."

It isn't the monsters that drive you insane or anything its the lack of logic. Humans at some basic level want to think humanity will eventually reason out a way to survive even if they die on the attempt they want to think their children or their children's children will at some point win.

Lovecraft horror is tossing something that is a total OCP at them. Something that no human can logically figure out how to beat. Thing is unlike say particle decay or Entropy it has a chance of killing everything you know and love at any time. You can't see it or understand it or stop it you can't even understand it.

Issue is the lowest common denominatorgot a hold of it and now it is "lol you go crazy"
>>
>>28116876

I've read all of the REH stories but none of the comics. Recommendations?
>>
>>28127376
Well that and we've been desensitized to pretty much everything that Lovecraft found terrifying. I mean one of his stories has "ZOMG YOU HAVE A NEGRO ANCESTOR" as its horrifying revelation. And we're supposed to agree that this is worth going insane over.
>>
>>28127711

Yeah. That's why in modern day it's best to turn it up a bit and by a bit I mean a lot.
>>

That and it was less negro and more "Ancient monster that lives underwater."

I'm not talking about "The Shadow over Innsmouth" this one's "Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and his Family" aka "The White Ape".

>The two particulars in question are these: the arms on the golden locket about the creature’s neck were the Jermyn arms, and the jocose suggestion of M. Verhaeren about a certain resemblance as connected with the shrivelled face applied with vivid, ghastly, and unnatural horror to none other than the sensitive Arthur Jermyn, great-great-great-grandson of Sir Wade Jermyn and an unknown wife. Members of the Royal Anthropological Institute burned the thing and threw the locket into a well, and some of them do not admit that Arthur Jermyn ever existed.

Not only did the guy go insane and burn himself to death along with his mansion, but his peers refused to acknowledge he even existed after learning of his negro heritage. Pretty harsh.

That I'll agree too. Not just because Lovecraft's style of "Cosmic Horror" is ubiquitous, but, just we tend to experience in general way more creepy or freaky stuff, and we also know and accept the human mind is way more resilent than some of lovecraft's protagonists are, and than the style of CoC games, though I can't really think of a better way to make the spiral into death and despair which does happen in HPL works than with a mechanic like SAN deliberately stilted to slowly destroy the character. Otherwise the broadest denominator would just be like "meh, whatever, doesn't bother me".

Personally, in a /tg/ state of mind, I prefer a style more like Eclipse Phase, where "Lucidity" is basically a mental "health" stat (though much harder and more time consuming to fix than cuts and bruises). As your LUC degrades, you have a harder time functioning (same as taking physical damage) and gaining short-term derangements or permanent disorders. And even at 0 LUC, you only go into a kind of Fugue state until you get back about zero. You don't go incurably insane until you hit twice your Lucidity value, which is your insanity rating, and probably requires your character to be in a situation where some kind of superintelligent alien monstrosity is actively trying to destroy your mind.

I disagree.

There are people that go blind after witnessing intense, real life brutality. Imagine seeing a screaming, gibbering creature that is warped and then tears the head off a baby, eating it with its many mouths that are all actually one mouth.

If people can go blind over a few war crimes, I'm sure they can go mad seeing something like that.

Part of me wonders if that's the purpose of the Deep Ones.

Maybe one of Cthulhu's kin saw the pale scuttling creations of their enemy and took pity on our ancestors. And so decided to uplift us.
The Deep Ones are designed to interbreed with us, to gradually make us immortal, able to survive on far more than the isolated reaches we dwell on, and able to understand the universe.

Nope. It even specified in the Call of Cthulhu that the Deep Ones came to Earth with the dark wizard god himself to escape the wrath of the Elder Gods and had no intention of helping anyone except their own. Remember, they came to our world at the very beginning of our evolutionary process and didn't all of jack shit to help us out. They built mighty cities during the Age of Conan the Barbarian and had some contact with humans but ultimately they left us alone to our own devices. They see us as nothing more than potential slaves and a food source.

That reminds me I have a question, and I'm sorry if this is derailing anything but I'm trying to develop a story and world (and some gameplay elements) for a game I'm working on. Would /tg/ be the right place to discuss that sort of stuff?
