1800 hours, April 16, 2540
Morganis IV, Supercontinent designation 'Suruga'
Edge of UNSC space
Population-38,433,000

Plasma blasts rocked the airspace, subsonic shockwaves rattling teeth in skulls and destroying Kilo-Seven-Bravo in a display of pyrotechnic destruction. The glorified chauffeur, and the CO for this god-forsaken trip, acting Lieutenant-Commander Mackenzie rolled his eyes and brought the Pelican into a tight roll, yelling into the COMlink for the remaining flight to scatter. The wing of seven was cut down to four by the time the craft were low enough to seek sanctuary between the walls of the canyon. Mack guides the dropship down to a temporary command post. As the squad step out of the battered craft, a fleet of 'hogs roll through, mustering for something. The rest of Kilo-Bravos survivors set down, disgorging the reinforcements. You are Petty Medical Officer Second Class,

>Name redacted

, and your mission is to capture the split-chinned freak commander over that hill.

In typical Elite bravado, the flagship cruiser Fortitude of Phobia lead the charge against Battle Group Siberia, and promptly took three MAC rounds through the stern. Putting down on Morganis IV to make repairs, Rear Admiral James Hamilton ordered a strike team to capture the Fleet Master to call off the holding battle occurring in orbit. That's why you just got put down in an active warzone under precision Anti-Air fire. The purple-blooded freaks planted a trio of shield generators around the stricken behemoth, and is running them off the ship-board reactors. The AA cannon is stopping Longswords from assaulting, and the whole area is now fortified by a few hundred purple, orange and blue-blooded aliens. If the battle in orbit continues much longer, even Hamilton's holding tactics won't prevent massive casualties.

The Covenant are entrenched further along the valley, with UNSC forces holding a parallel line 100 meters down-range. Anyone who so much as pokes their head up gets targeted with a massive flurry of needles, plasma and carbine fire, and any vehicle that turned the corner found itself staring down a plasma mortar sailing towards it. There is already one wrecked scorpion shell at the edge of UNSC lines, and no other heavy cavalry is going near those lines until the hulking purple tanks are destroyed. There is four of them, two manned, two being recharged/repaired at any one time. The cliffs slope down behind enemy lines, which could allow a small force to do some serious damage to the tanks, but the danger level would be obscene. If the Scorpion tanks are brought to bear, the grunt and jackal lines will falter, since they have little to no major firepower which isn't inbuilt into a vehicle.

The AA gun which destroyed half of Kilo-Bravo is another major impediment to the plan-no air support will close until the gigantic apparatus is shut down for good. Designation T-27 Mantis, big enough to punch a hole through a meter of Titanium-battle plate-enough firepower to dent a capital ship. There is a rotating force of ghosts around the base, but no-one has gotten a final count on them. The force of warthogs that rolled past were going to go assault the AA complex, and are still close enough to catch up to. Of course, you could sneak up the canyon wall as night falls and try to sneak past the ghost patrols to the gun itself. The problem with such a massive construction is the fact that what is broken is NOT easily fixed-giving more than enough time for a precision airstrike to destroy the shield generator.

Finally, there is the shield generator itself-a large, hemispherical building transmitting an energy shield straight from the Fortitude of Phobia. Nothing smaller than a MAC round is denting the barrier, and a MAC round might kill the Fleet Master. Utilising the encroaching cover of darkness, you could either slip down the slope near the wraiths, or rappel down the cliff near the generator itself. The complex will undoubtedly be guarded, but the bulk of covenant ground forces are trading plasma for bullets at the trenches, so the opposition should be light. Should.

Any one of the these three moves could destabilise the battle enough to launch a decisive strike. That's why one of the UNSC's black ops squads has been called in, and why you, your squad and LTC Mack have been nearly melted down to constituent atoms in a live-fire AA battery. The entire operation is a desperate gamble, but if it pays off, thirty-eight million civilians and everyone on the Battle Group Siberia might be saved.

You wave Mackenzie over, asking about the generator building itself.

'We don't really know much about the things. There was a couple on Eridanus, but they were destroyed by the covenant when the UNSCDF started to win. There's three of them spaced around the crippled flagship, and theres over two-hundred ground troops protecting it. It's about fifty metres across and shaped like an egg cut in half, pointy end up. Plasma conduits connect it to the ship, and if we cut them, then the superconductors projecting the shield should overheat, destroying the building. The shield should hopefully lose cohesion, allowing our forces to snatch & grab this 'councillor' Fleet Master.'

There's a reason we call them wraiths-those plasma mortars turn you into one. the AA gun? well, it has to cool down somehow. either blow the coolant, or just break one of the legs it's supported on. The tripod structure leaves it lighter than our equivalents, but break one of the legs and it alllll goes tumbling down'

The 'hogs are at the end of the valley, and are about to make the climb up to the plains south of the AA gun.

Mack waves you on as he moves into the COM room, yelling 'get a move on'.

Cei and Roland follow you to the foot of the canyon side. It's an impressive bit of geology, strata showing the ages of the planet, even before terraforming began a hundred and thirty years ago. Awai trots out from the armoury tent, SRS99 barell holding a piton and enough rope to reach the top twice over. She crouches, sights, and with a dull hiss of gas escaping, the spear whizzes to the top of the canyon wall, where the slope is no more than a steep hill. The squad checks COMlinks, three green indicators appear next to your biosigns in your eyepiece HUD. The climb begins.

Four minutes later, Cei pulls Roland up over the lip. Awai is fifteen metres off, sighting distances through her scope. 'seems clear, sir, but this country has plenty of hiding places. No chance of a ghost sneaking up on us, but everything else could try it'

The badlands stretch out before you to the west and south, but the three-kilometre bulk of the Fortitude of Phobia dominated the skyline. In the upper atmosphere, screaming hunks of metal screamed silently overhead, matched by streaks of hellfire. The orbital battle still raged, but without a 3:1 advantage, it was never an even fight. You shake your head, and look around. There are three easy paths through the area, but they twist and turn, snaking through the tussocks and rocks strewn over the landscape. The UNSC spotters are down south, a pair of soldiers holding the same SRS99 that Awai is covering you with. You determine that the closest ditch runs almost parallel to the edge of the canyon, and would be the fastest way to the generator-but any covenant might try the same thing. Of course, you could just go cross country, which is a shorter distance, but much more difficult terrain.

Time-1818

The red-tinged sun of Morganis starts to be obscured by the bulk of the beached supercarrier, casting a red-purple tinge across the landscape before the coming night.

You wave Awai and Roland forward, and begin to beat your way through the tussocky grass and into the rocky wilderness. The going is hard, but compared to boot camp of fifteen years ago, positively a walk in the park. Apart from the constant whine of plasma and gunfire, and occasional explosion, filtering up from the trenches below, it would almost be reflective

A chitter mars the relative silence, and your squad melts into an overhang. A squad of jackals walks past, carbines and beam rifles held in gangly hands. While most of the six-man squad is wearing the blue-tinged armour of a Jackal Minor, the lead and the rear guard are wearing crimson armour, and carry arm-mounted shield projectors in addition to their rifles and pistols. You have the element of surprise, but the marine overwatch is too far away to provide assistance.

>Your move. This group is dangerous, but the overwatch might be able to drive them off. The only close-range weapons they have are plasma pistols, but thats plenty dangerous to someone only wearing battle plate

Ah the good old days when UNSC armor was simply designed but fairly practical and admirable.

The good old days. Back when you were fighting a hopeless war, against a foe that was nearly invincible were it mattered, when Earth was all that was left after 25 years of an Interstellar Holocaust against humanity.

Back when Hunters were moderately effective. Back when THE RETICLE WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GODDAMNED SCREEN. Back when their were distances long enough to justify the Sniper Rifle's extreme range and power. Back when the LAAG sounded badass.

Back in the good old days.
>>
>>28077755
Awai shoots the rearguard in the head, but Cei only glances his target and draws a line of purple blood, as it activates its shield. You open fire, raking across two of the unaware Minors. Roland shakes as his SMG almost bisects one of the remaining minors, but the final one rolls behind a rock, leaving his beam rifle behind.

You motion Cei and Roland around the side of the rock the Minor rolled behind, while keeping a bead low on the rock the major went behind. As the fireteam slid around the edge, a shimmering wall of energy minced out from behind cover, keeping the bottom covering his feet. 'can't get a shot' comes from your right, as Awai tries unsuccessfully to put a 12.7 through the avian alien's foot. The plasma pistol is still behind the rock, but the alien will be clear to fire soon. Training kicks in, pushing a burst of adrenaline through your system-What do you do?

A scream is heard from over the other side of the boulder, followed by a sustained burst of gunfire and an alien shriek, cut mercifully short.

You wince as the sound reaches your ears, but sight along the M6D. The heavy pistol is difficult for a human to keep using, but the heavy payload and stopping power led to the widespread distrubtution of what was intended to be an ONI developmental prototype, designed for SPARTAN augmented humans.

The heavy kickback rocks your arms, once, twice, three times... but each bullet flies true-not at the shielded alien, but at the gravel beneath its feet. Small blossoms of fire pelt the area with dust and fragments, but the jackal tips forward, squawking as it loses its balance

Before it hits the ground, a 12.7X99 round plunges through its skull, travelling two-thirds of the way down its back, and erupting in a splatter of gore. Awai grins, slightly, the runs over to the others.

Roland is in bad form. A blast of superheated gas hit him on the left forearm, not penetrating the heat-resistant ceramics, but burning the flesh beneath the plate. He ripped it off as soon as he could, but the flesh is badly burned. You cover the wound with biofoam to prevent infection, inject a targeted dose of polypseudomorphine, and skin-repairing anabolic steroids, but he's gonna be in bad shape for a little while.

You could send him back, but he is the only one trained to operate the intrusion pad he carries around with him, and he still has full mobility.

As you move to meet up with Awai, Cei returns, holding two shield generators, six pistols, four grenades and a trio of Beam rifles. 'there’s more of these, sir, but i prefer olive drab in my hands to these freakish contraptions'. What do you allot out?

The COMlink sputters with static, and Mack's voice warbles in your earpiece. 'Whats the situation, Zac?'

'One man injured, but stable. We're about halfway there, be advised, Jackal snipers attempting to fire down on the front lines.'

'Get moving, the 'hogs just got back, there’s more ghosts than anticipated. Mack out'

Cei walks up to you, Roland following doggedly behind. Once again, you start moving through the badlands.

Two hundred meters before the edge of the cliff above the generator, a whistling gained volume. Every UNSC vet knew what it was-a Banshee light aircraft. Give Shield to Cei and Roland. Pass plasma grenades around the squad. Keep a plasma pistol or two, probably between us and Cei. Probably keep the beam rifle for ourselves.
>>
>>28078600
The small aircraft screams overhead, shaking the teeth in your skull. As it flies off, you motion forward, and cross the last two hundred metres. The covenant have the strange blue floodlights used in ground engagements bathing the area in front of their lines, while you can see the glimmer of human spotlights, around a kilometre away. the open area in the center of the valley has a pair of Wraiths hanging around, waiting for a target to present itself. But thats not what you're here for.

The shield generator is a cross between a building, an egg and a Seraph fighter-long, sleek, blunt end downwards. Four Anti-grav pylons surround the main bulk, supporting it with streams of blue, leaving the bobbing blob supported. At the top, a large divot projects a shimmering silver shield, providing a third of the cohesion protecting the beached whale capital ship.

The weakpoint of the structure, according to the LTC, is the massive cable attached to the bottom of the bulbous structure. Subsidiary cables branch off from the shield generator, powering the whole area, from lights to Wraith recharge stations. The cable stretches to the bottom of the shield, with lighting providing constant illumination all the way to the edge of the shield.

A group of spotlights illuminate the area around the pylons, revealing a pair of hunters, three Major elites, and a dozen grunts.

Cei whistles. 'Whoo-ee, sir, thats a tough nut to crack. What's the plan?'

More detailed plans net you an easier job of it. if you have any questions about the area, ask them. also, roll 4d100

Alright, we can have our sniper take out one Elite, we use the beam rifle to take out another. The Hunters will probably be onto us by then. We should set a trap of explosives for them when they try to charge at us. We should try to frag the grunts as they come at us and focus fire on the remaining elite. Overcharge plasma pistol for that.

The tell-tale wink of a targeting mask across the side belies the position of a pair of Jackal sniper. Cei points it out, and you and Awai nod.

None of you can see any more, but most of the covenant forces are at the trenches, attempting to stop the UNSC advance. Also, you see a holographic emitter, at both the pylons and the recharging stations.

The largest Major Elite at the pylon, with slightly more decorative armour than his colleagues, is speaking through the projector to a similarly-clad split-chin. The projector at the Wraith-charger is silent.

>>
You're a hundred meters away and thirty meters up.

>>28078983
That was the plan to get rid of the wraiths earlier. The only one who has the knowhow and the technology to operate anything more complex than a shade turret (of which there is none close by) is Roland.

>>28079054
You currently have height over the area, and apart from the wraith-recharging station, all the other covenant are around eight hundred metres away.
>>
>>28079054
>>28078968
Can't we go stealthy? maybe not alert the eight foot tall death machines, the bipedal dogs, and the gigantic cans of worms carrying a few tons of weapons and armour? all we need to do is blow up the cable. can we get Roland to hack the floodlights, or something?
>>
>>28079105
In that case, let's sneak down there while the marksman attempts to kill the elites as a distraction. Leave her with a beam rifle in case she runs out of ammo.
>>
>>28079142
agreed
>>
>>28079136
The floodlights are controlled by the power regulator, near the Wraith-recharging depot. Conceivably, given a minute or two, he could hack it to turn off on a timer
>>
Time-1832

The elite finishes his gravelly conversation. The dialect is strange, and the covenant translation software on the tablet has difficulty understanding half the words, while the half it did understand dealt mainly with incomprehensible religious jargon

So, options are
>open fire (Elites, snipers, hunters?)
>go to wraith depot (overload the wraiths? kill the lights?)
>go sneaky and place a bomb on the conduit
>anything else?
>>
>>28079231
>>go sneaky and place a bomb on the conduit.

Once the lights are down have the marksman start picking off the covvies from the ridge. Once they're distracted
>go sneaky and place a bomb on the conduit
>>
>>28079231
kill the lights, pick off the command and snipers, and blow the conduit
>>
>>28079231
Can Roland hack the wraiths? If so we could just use those to bulldoze the hunters then kill the elites and grunts.
>>
>>28079276
But wouldn't killing the lights indicate that something is wrong and would put them even more alert?
>>
>>28079307
Roland could conceivably get inside a wraith, but that is a very noticable thing, and as soon as that is noticed, everything will open fire on him, so it's very unlikely that he would live for more than three shots

>>28079310
true, but killing the lights also makes every covenant other than jackals wearing a sniper mask blind.
>>
>>28079310
Yes, but our sniper has night vision and they don't.

>>28079349
How about when the lights are off?
>>
>>28079372
wraiths have a couple of points which glow. not super-visible, but not invisible. you have an hour of darkness before the moon starts to rise.

Also, remember that you are not a SPARTAN, have no energy shielding other than a pair of jackal gauntlets, and cannot wrestle hunters
>>
>>28079399
Are the hunters going by Halo:CE mechanics where you could kill them by shooting the in the back with a pistol?
>>
>>28079399
Going with turning off lights and blowing the conduit. Who does what? Roland needs to be at the lights, but anyone can prime an explosive.

>>28079426
Not quite so weak. Remember, there is a gestalt colony inside one, so you have to kill a lot of the worms, or blow them up, to kill it. if you roll particularly well, while very close to a hunter, you could fire explosive pistol rounds into it and kill it eventually-but its a lot more likely to swing half a ton of steel through your midsection

Roland takes out the lights and leaves C4 for anyone who comes to investigate. Once the lights are out the marksman takes out the snipers and then elites. Cei and us will sneak to the generator once the sniper jackals are dead.

Blow up the generator with C4, use the wrist shields when we retreat if necessary.
>>
>>28079488

'Okay, this is a tough nut to crack. I don't want to get roasted by the tin can of worms, so we'll split this up. Roland, you see the building connected to the lights? Over near the two wraiths? Reckon you could break it open?'

'Sir, probably, sir! I'll need a few minutes though'

'Good enough. Awai, when the lights go out, take out the snipers with the supressed sniper-they'll be the only ones who can see us. Once thats done, Roland and i will start climbing back up here. If they see us before the lights go out, shoot them-hopefully nothing will notice'

'Cei, you're on Demo detail. See that conduit? it needs to be cut. But if we're within a hundred metres of it, when it blows, it'll vaporise us. Cei grins, whispering into the COM

As you reach the bottom of the sheer slope, the projector flares into life, showcasing a massive, white-armoured elite. Instead of the functional, shark-like helmet that the rank and file sport, this one wears a massive crest that brings his height close to three meters. The guttural tone blares out, but before the translation software in Rolands pad could decipher it, the holograph-and the speech-vanished. The recorded message whirrs through the tablet, translating the dogma and jargon into something you can understand.

'Sounded like an inspirational speech, sir. Bolstering the troops, and all that. Blimey, we're meant to capture that bastard? Alive?'

How do you respond? You're in a dead area, no visible covenant, approaching the wraith-station
>>
>>28080010
"Sure, if we can. He may not have any limbs when we're done, but we can take him alive."
>>
>>28080044
Roland lets out a nervous giggle at that, leaving you wondering just how young he is. According to his Service Record, he lived through a Covie invasion in 2530, and signed up for Tech support, lived through three engagements-but this is his first time in a small unit.

The Wraith station is cast mainly in shadow. Roland crouches next to the plasma couplet feeding the floodlights, cracking the casing and inserting the umbilical cable used to interface with Covie tech.
'Might be a little while sir' he says through the COM. 'The written language is twice as complex as the spoken one'

Do you want to set the C-12 charges on the Wraiths being refuled, or is that pushing your luck a bit too far?

You leave Roland to his hacking, and sneak around to the front. The building is designed like a double-bay garage, but built out of that shiny purple alloy. Two massive hulks sit idle, antigrav pods off, resting on the ground. You wait for a few seconds, and hearing nothing inside, move in. The front of the building faces away from the cliff-you have no overwatch while inside

Each tank's motor compartment has a large cable attached to the back, feeding power into the internal source. The two charges are distributed to the sloping undercarriage, and remote detonators linked to your helmet COM.

You attempt to leap for the rifle, but the black squid-face is too fast, and knees you in the gut as you attempt to jump past him.
This may have saved your life, as the blade only sliced a shallow furrow along your right forearm- a distant scream echoing, before you realise it is your own-weeping blood despite the burns, incredibly painful-but not deadly.

One shot is right about to hit him between the eyes, before his shield shimmers into place-but the kinetic force still snapped his head back, disorienting him enough for you to dodge back, running around the front of the bulbous tank.

Roland finishes sabotaging the floodlights, as you start to stagger to your feet. Man, that was gonna leave a scar to be proud of. Between the drugs, the blood, and lack of adrenaline, you feel woozy, but still remember to search the body of the Elite-it may have had an active camoflage generator.

The green blast arced slightly, radioactive sparks melting off its edges, flying directly at Cei-who turned around to meet it, screaming defiance-just as an orange plane of energy flared into place.

The explosion flings Cei back a dozen metres, sheer kinetic force as unstoppable as gravity-but alive and intact, the shield generator sparking, illuminating his position-before he tears it off and runs.

The confused Hunter, leaking orange goo from its abdomen, turns and follows Cei's desperate run up the edge of the cliff-just as the magazine slides into place next to you.

Three shots thump out, tearing the Hunter apart from the inside out-leaving nothing but rapidly cooling sludge inside the titanic armour.

The final shot thunks forth, right at the skull of an elite stupid enough to poke it's head out, spraying alien brains, blood and mandibles flying across the panic stricken grunts.

Free of the threat to her squadmate, Aiwa opens fire on the terrified cannon fodder. Methane packs pop and heads explode, reminding you of a macabre birthday party as breathers and bright blue blood flies in splattering arcs.

Cei pants as he arrives at the rendesvous. First thing to leave his lips was a query-'Who stole my kill? The can'o'worms was mine!'

Roland looks on in confusion as Aiwa casually flips him the bird. You snicker, then point back to base. Your job is finished-you send the all-clear to Mack, and start moving out.

The landscape fades behind you, but as you circle a large rock, Cei at point clicks the COM twice-the signal for stop.

Edging around the rock, a clearing holds a Spirit dropship, releasing a clutch of five elites and a holo-projector, currently dormant. The repulsor engines fire, lifting the Spirit off the ground, keeping low to avoid being spotted. The elites are a gaggle of majors and minors, led by a gold armoured monster-a Zealot.

The C-12 timer decreases to ten seconds. Nine. Eight.

You are more than far enough away from the explosion to avoid it-but its going to be loud, and its going to be bright. Distraction?

>your move, marine

What do you mean by "Distraction?"

Anyways, have Awai time her shot on the Zealot with the explosion

The explosion will be one hell of a distraction, is what it meant. Just Awai, or have everyone open up fire? You can use an AR, just not at long ranges
>>

Basically, have everyone time their shots to the explosion then sneak away.

The Holo-projector whirrs to life, projecting an elite wearing SpecOps gear. Roland holds up the pad to record, but you motion him to put it down. Three clicks, engage. Five seconds-Four-you stop gesturing and draw your pistol.

The explosion rings out, bathing the entire area in incredible white light, the shockwave travelling along the ground-but by then the first shots are already ringing.

The light, brighter than a rising sun, obscures your squad as you unload everything you have onto the surprised covenant. A 12.7X99 impacts on the zealots shields, followed by a second breaking through, punching it in the stomach, and a third blasting its chest apart

>>28081893
Roland opens fire with a flurry of plasma from the SpecOps pistol-either better quality or better maintenence of the firing mechanism allowed a dozen fast blasts of plasma to imparct on shielding, draining a minor's shield to nothing before melting half its chest as the cooling elements failed, leaving the target screaming in agony and cursing in a dozen languages as its flesh melted under the barrage

>>28081904
Cei's rifle fires tight, controlled bursts at a Major-punishing blasts rocking its personal energy shielding, followed by a trio of rounds entering its skull without leaving the back of its helmet

You open fire with your M6D, but the combination of exhaustion and injuries and the shockwave rumbling through the ground only allowed two impacts before you lost balance

Two elites remain, and are not aware of their attackers numbers-only that human weaponry is taking chunks out of their brothers. You are partially obscured by a rock large enough to hide a Spirit dropship.

The blade of energy shoots forward with one last propulsion of incredible muscles, as the shields flare, fade and die...but the momentum of the red-armoured elite it continues forward, eliciting a scream as the unit scatters-too slow, for Awai, as a superheated blade of plasma rips open the side of her abdomen. The screaming, you've heard before-dozens of times-but it almost seems personal. The plasma blast knocks you forward, comparable to a grenade. but by now, you're far enough out of the explosion not to be vaporized-merely tenderized.

The wound was horrible, but not mortal. Hopefully. The blade carved a path through her abdomen, damaging the bowel. You did as best you could, but you need Evac, now. As you buzz Mack, you hear the sound of battle abate as the last of the trench warfare concludes-with the retort of a Scorpion firing.

'Mack, i have injured, i repeat, injured. Require Evac, pronto!'

The LTC must have heard the exhaustion in your voice, as he merely replied an affirmative, before dumping the call, rather than the usual smart-alec comments.

Cei still hasn't stopped swearing, and is watching as a guard while you stabilise Awai. Leaving her with Roland, you and Cei try to locate the last elite. Roll me 2d100

It's not difficult to find him-while Cei looks around the hills, you merely follow the blood trail into the hills, finding the mortally wounded alien coughing purple blood onto the ground. Looks like that single volley managed to puncture something important. Despite being nearly two feet shorter than the squid-faced freak, you feel rather high-and-mighty- and thats not even mentioning your anger.

Actions? It is unarmed, five meters away, clutching its throat.

You raise the M6D. This was your retribution. It looks up at you, snarls, and begins to pull itself to its hooves-but before it even gets off the ground, a bullet rips into one of its knees. then the other. A warbling scream echoes through the air, the armoured mandibles stretched wide-before a HE shell passes between the spread mandibles, detonating inside the creatures skull. The helmet remained intact, but the skull, somewhere between a snake, a shark and a B-grade horror movie antagonist is reduced to mush.

Cei walks into the gully, sees your expression, and stands to the side. No funny stuff, not today.

Time-1920
The Pelican swoops in, landing in the clearing. You carry Awai onto the blood tray, and use the on-board supplies to stabilise her. Mack walks down from the pilots bay, and shakes his head at the state of the crew.

Awai-horribly injured
You-forearm injury, requires surgery. First-Degree burns from Energy Sword Overload
Roland-Second to Third degree Burns along his arm
Cei-Minor concussion, fractured rib.

Beating an elite? good luck with that. the arbiter can outwrestle the Chief, who is the strongest human to ever live, while he was in MJOLNIR, which about doubles his strength. Seriously, these guys are scary.

Ok, I kind of meant after shooting him up and weakening him, then commence with the beatdown. Whatever. mission accomplished.

Behind you, the bulk of the Fortitude, the object of this operation, lies open, Longsword Bombers cutting swathes through the hull, allowing the ODST pods to hopefully land directly within the ship.

The first of the drop pods began to land, mostly outside the bulk of the ship.

The Holopad that was dropped off with the elites flares into life again, displaying the commander this operation was meant to capture, both to stop this engagement and to hopefully halt the war.

Roland fiddles with his pad, then giggles again. That seems to be a habit of the nervous 'rookie'. Not that he was a rookie anymore. 'Got it working this time-this should be a literal translation, without the bullshit'

The pad hums and whirrs, then begins to narrate, providing an electronic counterpoint to the rough, guttural sounds projected with the imposing image. 'This is Fleet Master Zaki 'Vhokuree. The Unclean Vermin have prevailed-but they shall not gain any honour from my defeat. Burn their filth to purity from orbit in my memory-Take my Memory to the Hierarchs, May they see fit to guide me on the Great Journey.'

The massive, crested alien reaches towards the camera, slamming a fist outside the range of the holoprojector. 'Benedictions are too late now'

Mack is next to you, not in the pilot's seat. Your actions?

Though, you might want to streamline the rolling process. Some quests have people roll a certain number of dice and take the best out of three posts. try something like that.

You turn around, but Mack is already running for the cockpit, yelling over his shoulder 'Close the fucking airlocks' Shaking your head, you do what he tells you, and you are about to ask him what was up his ass. He yells into the COM 'Get all units the hell out of here! It's gonna blow! This is Lieutenant Commander Steven Mackenzie, ordering ALL units to retreat! The Split-chinned Freak is gonna kill everyone!'

The import of the words make you realise just what the Fleet master implied-The great journey was the Covenant's Honourable Death.
>>
>>28082675
Three minutes after takeoff, the shockwaves batter the small craft, Mack screaming obscenities as he wrestled with the controls. At Firebase Delta, the wreck of the ship remained visible on the horizon.

The fusion reactors had overloaded, killing the ship, the covenant, and every UNSC soldier on board and including a kilometre out wards from each of the bulbous reactor sections.

However, the loss of the flagship demoralised the covenant enough to retreat, allowing the civilian population of Morganis IV to be saved. it was officially a victory, something to be savoured-but it was bittersweet.
