You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

You found out that Citrine and her husband are going to be at Prince Emilio's party, picked out a stuffed alpaca to give the Wilhelms' baby (and bought another for Marianne), told her about your past, and ate a bunch of turkey legs.

But now it's time for the main point of this trip: getting the Princess a dress.

>Congratuations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

"Hey, at least you get to pick out what you're wearing," you say to Marianne.
"It's not like I have much of a desire to even do that," Marianne replies. "I just hope I can find something quickly and get this over with."
"What kind of dress were you condering getting, anyways?"
"Hm?" Marianne stops and turns to you, a look of surprise on her face.

"Of course you'd ask about that..." she sighs. "I'll probably just get the kind of thing that I always wear when I'm forced to go to these parties... something white and frilly and easy to move around in. This place usually carries at least a few things that I actually like, so it shouldn't take too long."
"You've been to wherever this dress store is before?" you ask.
"Only when I'm forced to... anyways, the alterations are usually what takes the longest, so you shouldn't have to wait very long."

Let's ask about Lucianna since that's the only thing she's actually looking forward to. How they met, how much she's looking forward to seeing her, that kind of stuff.

If I remember correctly, she doesn't like Emilio because he's spineless and I don't expect much of a different answer from the usual hates being around crowds thing from before about formal affairs.

Considering the animal guard rankings and the sexual assault she went through about 2 months ago I think she's sort of in an "all men are brutish, perverted animals" phase. She's warmed up to Reinhold but there's definitely still some paranoia over him because of what her last bodyguard did.

"So, uh..." you begin, "...is there any specific reason that you don't like Prince Emilio?"
"Ugh..." Marianne sighs. "I pried into your life, so I suppose I owe you this much," she says, looking up into the sky. "You see, I was raised by my father. Vincent, Gregory and Arnaud were also always around... and at the very beginning of my life, there was also my uncle Raoul. I'm sure it sounds strange, but I suppose I've come to judge most people against their standard."
"Even Sir Gregory? I thought you didn't like him."
"Yes. He wasn't always so irritating... but anyways, I believe that a man should be brave, strong and honest. And Emilio... while I suppose he is honest, he's even more timid than Melanie. And as a man, I find that to be pathetic."
"Ouch."

"So is that tied into why you don't like formal stuff?" you ask.
"Yes, the people who tend to frequent such events are overwhelmingly two-faced. Pretending to be your friend only to gossip behind your back, doing whatever they can just to ingratiate themselves to those in power... it's extremely aggravating, to say the least," Marianne replies.
"Yeah, I can understand that," you reply.
"And then they always try and get close to be because of my station, and... ugh. That's how most of Marconetti's nobility is, so I suggest that you be careful while around them."

I honestly don't think her paranoia is a good reason to not be nice to her, though. She really needs someone to be nice to her right now. We just got to prove we aren't in it for her station. >>
>>28014596
That's one of them.

Something much more noticeable to us and more deliberate for her to do is scratching the ear as well as turning to look around behind her. Eye contact for maximum confirmation.

And is Luciana in on the loop for how dreadful these conventions are? She hates them as much as Marianne? Can we work shenanigans in with her?
>>
>>28014647
Perhaps three coughs?
>>
>>28014572
Specific: Has Luciana always been so adventurous? One gets the sense that she wants more from her life than her lot.

Plus her father and all her babysitters in this kingdom were adventuring buddies. It's in her blood and upbringing both.

As a note, she's not very trusting of any nobility

But she's much more trusting of bakers and bookshop owners

She's had bad experiences with nobility to the point she won't give anyone even related to a castle a chance.

Then again, we aren't in a position to point out her inability to give people a chance to prove themselves

"So she's like a sister to you, huh," you say.
"As much a sister to me as Citrine is to you," Marianne replies.
"You said that she used to visit with Nicolette's family... you think that maybe Ariane was an influence on her?"
"Yes..." Marianne says with a knowing smile, "...Luciana adores her. When we were younger, Ariane would tell us stories about Arnaud's party that Celestino never would, and they'd have fun teasing Nicolette when not doing that."
"Heh, that sounds like her," you say with a chuckle.

"Ariane was also the reason that Luciana started to long to go on her own adventure... back in Marconetti, she was never around any women who could use magic anywhere nearly as well," Marianne says. "much less at the same skill level as her own father."
"Wait, so her father's a mage?" you ask.
"Yes. Back when he, Nicolas and Arnaud were adventuring together, Celestino was their party's mage. From what I've heard, he wasn't as good with physical weapons as they were, but he made up for it in magical skill."

So King Celestino is as potentially scary as Arnaud, even withou the whole "King of Marconetti" part... that's something to keep in mind for the future.

"Seeing as how you two write to each other," you say, "did she happen to mention anyone or anything that I should be wary of?"
"Wary?" Marianne looks at you quizzically. "Not really... since she's used to all of the idiocy that goes on there, she doesn't particularly worry about their nobles. And the last time that one of them really got under her skin, she arranged things so she would never have to deal with them again."
"Uh..." you gulp.
"Yes, she's rather frightening when she's angry. Fortunately, it takes a lot for her to actually get to that point. And she seems to like you a fair amount, so you shouldn't have to worry."

"I see..." you reply. "So she's about as fond of all of that garbage as you are, I take it."
"Pretty much," Marianne sighs. "She's just used to it, is all."

You then follow the Princess for quite a while, finally stopping in front of a LARGE shop with several impossibly fancy dresses in its picture windows. It seems to be even more upscale than the one you went to with Nicolette, Sylvie and Melanie!

"Here we are... just follow behind me and try not to break anything." Marianne says as she opens the door and motios for you to come along.

Basically the way I see it, there is two ways to be nice to Marie. The way Reinhold has mostly done it up until now, which is pretty much of his own volition and more about just being a good friend . And then there's the other way, which is basically to do what she says to avoid making her mad.

Either way you're going to get her paranoia but at least one of those ways isn't just rolling over for her.

I don't see much trouble in just asking to help her pick something. That's what friends do. We did it for Nico, so why not her too?

> I believe that a man should be brave, strong and honest.

> he's even more timid than Melanie

> And as a man, I find that to be pathetic."

> And as a man,

You're taking it out of context, Anon. She isn't referring herself as a man, but she is listing the qualities of a man. Man in that sentence isn't the subject of the whole sentence but the object of the sentence. Hell. It's a dependent clause to begin with.

> And as a man, I find that to be pathetic.

The subject in the sentence is "I," which is referring to the speaker, the princess. In the independent clause, "I find that to be pathetic," the context of the dependent clause, "As a man," is made pretty clear. She's listing a quality that she finds the object as pathetic.

Yeah, no, that sentence doesn't parse that way. In that position, the clause "as a man" can only be taken to apply to the sentence's subject, immediately adjacent.

It would be fine if it were "for a man"; and I'm happy to read it as such (after a bit of ribbing, because it IS funny). It's easily excusable, but it's not defensible.
>>
>>28016306
I think you're drunk or quite simply out of your mind. You're reading way too much into it.
>>
>>28016254
But that's wrong, you fucking retard.

While i understand what Arch meant, it was a badly written sentence. If i were to say "As a parent, I find pornography offensive." I am qualifying the independent clause "I find pornography offensive" with the context that I am a parent.

"I" is not the subject here. "I, who am a parent" is the subject.
>>
>>28016318
You know what. You got me there. It would have been clearer if it was written that way.
>>
>>28016254
That one would go to the judges. "As" in that sentence more readily associates with "I" the speaker than the preceeding man in question. "In a man, I find that to be pathetic" communicates the idea better, if still stiffly. "I find that pathetic in a man" does it best.

That's why she hates Etiquette and Dancing but like the Politics/History course and Literature classes.

Yes it is a reason for a bodyguard as she is.
Adventuring with a bodyguard seems a bit silly.
Yes a combination of squishy mage and punching bag can work, but I'm mostly referring to the fact that to be a proper adventurer one needs to be able to stand on their own two feet across as many situations as you could encounter; which does not seem to be the case for her.

Figure out a way to creat elastic walls so that we can do crazy double jumps and 310 degree turns and other ridiculous bullshit like that. Or maybe develop light walls where we don't bounce, we reflect, so the speed boost doesn't have to be re-instanced at every turn.

The stuffed alpaca gift seems to have gone well, but you're still a bit wary about pushing your luck too far. As such, you decide to keep quiet this time and just do as the Princess says. Following her into the store, the two of you are quickly approached by a cheery store attendant.

"Good afternoon, it's so nice to see a young couple in here!" the attendant says cheerily.
"And good afternoon to you," Marianne replies, ignoring the second part of her comment. "I'm here to find a dress for a ball, so could you show me where the ones in my size would be?"
"Of course!" the attendant smiles. "Just follow me!"

you notice Marianne rolling her eyes as she turns to follow behind the attendant. Taking the rear, you eventually stop in what seems to be a forest of dresses.

"Do you have an idea of what you'd like? That way, we can narrow it down," the attendant asks.

After Marianne gives the attendant the same criteria for a dress that she said to you while on the way here, the attendant leads the two of you even deeper into the labyrinth of dresses.

"Alright... these fit what you asked for, miss..." the attensdant says.
"Marie," Marianne says.
"Ah, such a lovely name! Well, this is what you specified, would you like some help in picking something out?"

Clearly kind of annoyed by the attendant's comments, Marianne scours through the racks of dresses for something that she would actually like to wear. She quickly pulls out whatever looks like it might be nice, handing each one to you to hold as if you were a clothing rack.

As Marianne piles on the dresses until you can barely support their weight, you breathe a sigh of relief when she finally starts removing them from your arms as she enters the second round of her dress selection process. Inspecting enery dress that she handed you, she gradually puts them back for various reasons.

Poor stitching...

Too much cleavage...

Too restricting...

After a while, she seems to have settled on two dresses: one that's frilly and covered in lace, and another decorated with flower ornaments.

it's single use because it's incredibly powerful. More so than any magic we actually currently have access too.

We shouldn't be depending on the magic we can cast directly in Marconetti at this point unless it is literally life or death.

Frilly. Flower is nice too but doesn't seem as much her.
>>
>>28017554
I know why it's single use.

Flowers.

If she wants our opinion, she'll ask for it.

Though I'd lean towards the flowers personally, if freedom of movement is her concern.

Frilly.
>>
>>28017588
We probably won't need it at all unless there's multiple assassins. But that doesn't seem like a likely outcome at a ball in Marconetti.

It seems more likely we'd be on the wrong end of political scheming and maybe an honor duel or two.

Which is why generally I'm inclined to leave the decision up to her.

Our job isn't to choose what she wears, it's to protect her irrespective of what she wears. If she wants the frills, it's just another minor headache to be aware of.

I don't know if you understand my suggestion... We jokingly offer to try them on so she can see what they look like. You into what jokes are, right, anon?
>>
"I think the frilly one looks nice," you say.
"Hm?" Marianne turns towards you. "You like it too?"
"The flower one is pretty and all, but I think the frilly one would suit you better."

Marianne looks at you, and then back at the dresses.

"Yes... I think you're right," the Princess says as he takes the flowery dress and places it back on the rack. "Excuse me!"

Hearing Marianne's call, the attendant scurries towards the two of you.

"Ah, you've found something?" she asks.
"Yes, I'd like to have this one fitted," Marianne replies.
"Of course, of course... come this way!"

The two of you follow the attendant to the very back of the store, where an old lady is seated behind a counter.

"Umm..." the attendant begins, "...this is Marie and her gentleman friend, and she's decided on this dress here," she says as she places it on the counter.
"And she needs to get measured so it can be fitted?" the old lady asks.
"That's right!"
"Alright then... Miss Marie, come back here..."

The old lady motions for Marianne to come behind the counter.
