So, let's see... news.

Working on notes for the war-era short I want to run while I'm on break from '89, so far the people I've talked to really like it. Planefag said something to the effect of "I'm throwing money at the screen but nothing's happening" so I'm going to assume he likes it.

Could also be he hates it and was trying to give me ransom money to not run, haha.

Anyway!

Archives here:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989
and here:
https://archive.foolz.us/tg/search/subject/Strikers%20%2789%20Quest/

with a pastebin primer of sorts here:
http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

The pastebin works pretty well if you want to get involved, but don't want to bother with an archive binge. If even that's too much, ask in the thread! I'm sure one of the guys will help yank you up to speed, or if they won't, I will.

++

“So, you and the chief have been working on the fighter?” You ask, glancing over at Merlin as you walk across the deck towards your wyvern. You're not the first launches of the day, and the smell of jet fuel and scorched lubricant from the catapult mixes with the salt air. The twin's jet is on the nearby elevator, climbing out of the hangar deck- they're your wing for the patrol.

Merlin nods. “M-mostly on the witch suite though. Katya and Rosalie helped a lot too, and Ice helped when she could. Slider helped with some of the instillation and work up in your seat.” She smiles. “B-but I planned it all out and did all the research myself. I hope it works right....”

You can't help but reach over and ruffle her hair. “I'm sure it will.” You state, simply.

1/2
>>
“W-well, there was a lot of theory that went into it, and a few assumptions, but Ice and Rosalie both agreed that they were safe ones.” She says, explaining. “A-after what happened when Patty tried to use the suite, we examined the settings I had and they were ones that would have burnt out a striker in a few hours. S-so we went in and- you probably don't care, do you?”

She looks up at you. “I-I mean, it's interesting to me, but I know you have a lot of other things to worry about and this just lets us fight better, it's not really something you need explained. I-I'm sorry.”

You look over at her, noticing she's looking at her feet as you walk- you're still not sure you're ever going to get used to- or be comfortable with- her recent adoption of the witch’s skirt. It's her right, you know, but still. “I-it's just, it was fun. I can see why Ice is how she is, i-it's easy to lose yourself in work that's interesting.” She pauses. “I-I was even almost able to forget where you were. Almost” She adds in a small voice, one barely audible over the noise of the active flight deck.

[] “Of course I care, Merlin. It's our fighter, you're my crew. What all did you do?”
[] “I'm just glad you found something you like doing. You thinking about doing this post war?”

We need to keep her from becoming a workaholic, but also show our appreciation in the work she does. It's a delicate balance.

In addition, anyone else feel like we should payback the Captain? She came in big for us when we were dealing with that bitch, and then she let us have some of her personal whiskey. That's a massive amount of respect and trust she placed in us, and I feel that we should repay it some way.

That's the problem, though. American ships have been "dry" since Prohibition. Alcohol is considered contraband. That's why Captain Blackwell revealing that she had a stash, and then pouring us some of that stash, is such a big deal. This kind of dirt could get her relieved of command if we sent it to the right person, so her sharing a drink is a massive amount of trust.

[x] “Of course I care, Merlin. It's our fighter, you're my crew. What all did you do?”

Briefly, you think about admonishing her- afterall, Ice buries herself in her work and worries herself sick about everyone else without stopping to think about herself, which is distinctly unhealthy. How she manages to maintain the figure she does is a mystery- you guess magic cranks up your metabolism? You don't know and probably shouldn't be thinking about Ice's figure, at any rate.

“Of course I care, Merlin.” You say, pausing to look at her. “It's our fighter, you're my crew. I worry about both of you. Now, what all did you do?”

She looks over with a weak smile. “T-thanks frank. Here, I'll show you.”

She points out various mild changes- mostly places where new or improved magical components are located. She's also submitted a series of drawings for an improved turbofan for the jet- one that, by the sounds of it, is a huge, groundbreaking piece of technology. Assuming you heard her right, it'll be able to burn jet fuel and, if necessary, a witch can augment it with magical energy, which, as far as you know, is unheard of. It's not a new concept- hell, it was one of the first things they tried when jet fighters were coming on line. It's just that no one's ever really figured out how to do it- most designs hung up when they couldn't figure out how to design an engine that didn't lose an inordinate amount of power when the magical energy was cut off.

1/2
>>
You frown while she's pointing out where, near the engines, she's had several focuses installed, which she claims will allow her to do the same thing as her redesigned engine, just not quite as well as a purpose built design.

“It sounds to me like you're turning the jet into an outsized striker.” You say, offhandedly. She frowns slightly, but nods.

“I-I guess.” She says. “It's really not the same thing entirely, though. The jet can work without a witch, even if it wouldn't be as good as it would be with one. And I think the twins would be able to use it better anyway, since they can control their power better.”

She looks down at the deck. “E-even if Tabitha and Rosalie are right, and I am one of the strongest witches ever, I can't really control it that well. I... I just wish I'd been able to finish my time at the academy.”

[] “Merlin, you're doing great anyway. Don't worry about that.”
[] “Well, I'm sure Ice or Rosalie or Katya would be happy to teach you, if you asked.”

[x] “Well, I'm sure Ice or Rosalie or Katya would be happy to teach you, if you asked.”

“You know, for not being able to control it that well, you're doing a damn good job.” You say, looking up into your centerline bay- currently loaded with AMRAAMs. Everything looks fine in there, the rotary launcher for the missiles serving as proof of your crew's dedication- damn thing looks like someone polishes it on a regular basis. Then again, most of these guys were handpicked by Ice, so you can only expect it.

“Not as good as I could be doing.” Merlin responds.

“Well,” You say, looking in the two intakes for any obvious damage or debris- you don't find any, of course- “You know, if you asked, I bet Ice or Rosalie or Katya would be happy to teach you.”

“T-they're all so busy though.” Merlin says, starting up the ladder. “A-and they're already so nice to me that I'd feel bad, asking them.”

You wait until she's on top of the fighter before you start up the ladder yourself. From up there, the two of you pause to watch a pair of Tomcats take off, climbing in afterburner away from the deck of the Sara, bound for their own CAP.

“I'm sure they wouldn't mind.” You say. “In fact, let's ask when we get back, ok?”

“I-I guess. If you say so.” She mumbles, trailing behind you. “Careful, Frank.”

You look down and move your boot- you were about to step on one of the sensor packages studding the outside of the 'canopy'

“Thanks.” You respond, sitting down in your ejection seat and hitting the retract switch.

It takes you a minute to pull your kit out of your flight bag and get all plugged in, and it takes you a couple tries to get your straps threaded through the vest and cinched down.

Can't say I don't see a cliffhanger coming up, feel like it'll be "The Reds are invading Berlin, Martians are with them." or just Straight up Invasion of Berlin or Martians popping up. [x] “No, just see if you can get a link going with the tico, her radar is still a hell of a lot more powerful than ours.”

You shake your head, even though you know she can only just barely see it. “Nah, just see if you can set up a link with the Tico. Her radar is still a hell of a lot more powerful than ours.” You say, gently throttling back to best endurance speed and leaning back for a long patrol. “And if anything does come our way, that way we can maybe get the drop on them.”

“Glad they refitted her.” Merlin says. “Only a few ships in the task force can network with us. Hang on, I'm setting it up.”

It only takes her a few seconds- pretty soon she announces that she's watching the radar feed from the USS Ticonderoga. The powerful AEGIS set located on the cruiser outclasses even yours by a matter of magnitude- mostly through the sheer size and power that can be put into a radar set on a multi thousand ton warship, as opposed to the one that can be put in a fighter aircraft.

You know Merlin's also got up your other systems- specifically, the Tesla sensor, still unnamed, as well as the laser detection and rangefinding gear and the bird's IR suite. Sometimes, you think she and her sister would have made quite the pair, flying AWAC strikers- you have no doubt nothing would have been able to get by them.

>>
The twins join you only after a few minutes- Merlin detects them long before they contact you. You spare them a glance as they form up on your right wing- whatever their other faults, you can't ding Alyssa's flying at all. She's almost as good as you, you think.

Almost.

“So, uhh... Frank.” Alyssa says, hesitantly, on your flight's radio frequency. “You're not too mad at us, are you?”

“We really do love him, you know.” Clarissa adds, helpfully.

“And he's happy!” Alyssa says. “Some of the jarheads have been showing him around and teaching him how to handle himself on the carrier.”

“And he's with damage control and with all these ships he's going to be just fine!” Clarissa says.

“Now if we could just get him to pay a little less attention to Katya....” Alyssa adds, somewhat quieter.

[] “No, I'm not too mad at you. Everyone's got a right to be happy, I guess.”

[x] “No, I'm not too mad at you. Everyone's got a right to be happy, I guess.”

You sigh. While you want to explain, loudly, how bad of an idea you think this is, you can't bring yourself to do it. “No, I'm not too mad at you.” You say, clicking open your mic. “I'm not pleased with you, but I'm not too mad. Everyone has a right to be happy, I guess.”

You hear them sigh in relief over the radio. “Thanks Frank. So does that mean you won't have Slider do horrible things to us?” Clarissa asks. “We've seen her, she's watching us, we know it. She's going to do something terrible to us.”

“She wants Joe, I keep telling you that.” Alyssa says. “She's going to do something and-”

“She wants Frank, dummy.” Clarissa cuts her sister off. “But there's a line forming for that one and-”

“Ladies, please.” You say, resisting the urge to rub your temples. You better not have to put up with eight hours of this. “Regardless of who wants what, no, I'm not going to make shark fin soup out of you two for this, as much as there's many parts of me that want to.”

“Is that the best we're going to get?” Alyssa says. “No promises to not kidnap us and do unspeakable things to us?”

“You sound like Ice.” Clarissa scolds her sister. Why can't they do that on their intercom?

“Spellcaster flight this is Camelot.” A combat controller from the Saratoga's combat information center calls.

You acknowledge his call, tensing up and looking down at your MFDs. As if on command, one of them flips over to the comprehensive sensor picture for a hundred miles around- other than the twin's, the air and sea below are empty.

“Commander Bishop, this is Agent White. We've got a job for you.” A new voice says. “I'll spare you the details, but it's right up your alley. We've got a recon witch that needs an escort. She's high and at speed, but the Russians have launched interceptors. She took some damage from SAMs over Poland and occupied Germany and is losing speed, they'll intercept before she can get inside the fleet's SAM coverage. We can't divert her to any Luftwaffe fields because of an ongoing air attack, and we can't risk losing her information.”

[x] “So what are my orders, sir?”

“So what are my orders, sir?” You ask, Turning your plane roughly southbound and beginning to climb.
“She's at heading one one zero, about two hundred clicks out, but she's losing altitude and bleeding speed. She'll never make France or the UK, and she'll be slow enough to intercept over Germany and the Luftwaffe and Whermacht's air defense guys are pretty strung out right now. It's this task force or nothing.” He says, prompting you to turn so you're head on.

“She's not badly hurt, but she's got no shields- if those interceptors get to her first...” He trails off.

“Got it, sir.” You respond. You don't need a picture of that drawn- you're well aware what would happen.

“ Don't lose this girl, commander.” The agent says. “We need that intel.”

You click off the radio before responding- this guy's more worried about her intel than the witch, but that's predictable. It's what he's trained to worry about- spooks, you think derisively. They're all the same.

You gradually open up the throttles, letting your powerful jets really go to work. Behind you, You hear Merlin shift around a bit, adjusting to the gradual pressure of the acceleration. “Frank,” She says. “We'll be beyond the range of the Ticonderoga's radar when we link up. Do you want me to turn us on?”

[x] Yeah, heat us up. Those interceptor jocks might break off if they see us coming.

You nod, knowing she'll see the top of your helmet moving. “Yeah, heat us up.” You order, watching your MFD display suddenly flash over to relay the new radar data coming in. They're still well beyond range, but You've got limited information from the fleet- last heading and altitude.

The altitude tag makes you do a double take. “Angels sixty five? Jesus!” You grunt.

“She's drifting down.” Merlin says. “She should be at angels sixty or so when we see her, if we keep climbing. We'll have her on sensors before radar though.”

“That's still damn high.” You say, thinking about lift and how thin the atmosphere can get up that high.

“From what we know about the Mig thirty ones,” Merlin responds, sounding distracted, “Their ceiling is somewhere in the seventy thousand range. But they're interceptors, not fighters like we are.” She says.

“They won't want to turn with us.” You say, nodding. “Alright. Give me a miles to intercept.”

Instead of answering- she's juggling a half dozen things, again- It simply pops up in your helmet display, spinning down rapidly.

“So what's the plan, Fearless leader?” Alyssa asks.

“Or is it dear leader?” Clarissa supplies.

“Fearless dear leader?”

Protecting the witch has priority.
>>
>>28016803
Alright, depending on numbers, I vote we either both go after the interceptors and keep them tied up long enough for the witch to get away, or if there's too many top keep tied up, we stick with the witch.
>>
>>28016803
If the interceptors have the speed and altitude advantage, then they will be the ones deciding whether they want to engage us, at what distance, and when.

This basically eliminates three of the four choices.

Forget about haring after them.

>Stay close to the recon witch
>Wait for the interceptors to make a move, then retaliate with missile fire or active ECM/ECCM.
>>
>>28016803
It occurs to me, that both the Blackbird and the Foxhound are made for flying at or above Mach 3. Can the Wyvern keep up?
>>
>>28016918
Anon makes a good point. The initial engagement will be on their terms, but if and when we tangle, we'll have the advantage. Cover the witch until the Foxhound(s) decide to engage, and if that happens, take them out.
>>
>>28016943
The Mig-31s will have to slow down if they want to engage, and IIRC, Wyvern is capable of supercruise so it can actually reach Mach speeds more efficiently than the Foxhounds.
>>
>>28016943

I think we can get up to Mach 3. Our top speed was said somewhere previously. Was is Mach 3.3?
>>
>>28016966
They probably will not want to tangle, and if they they got superior numbers they'll just try and blow past us to take out the witch. Assume that these guys are just as mission oriented as we are, if they can do their job while ignoring us, they'll try to do it, especially if they are well aware of their disadvantages.
>>
>>28016981
We would have greater endurance, sure, but the -22 (also supercruise-capable) tops out at something like 1.8 due to the RAM in the skin.
>>

guys lets remember that it might not be Foxhounds at all we could be looking at some other more advanced form of soviet interceptor lets not get cocky or we'll fail big time.
>>
>>28017066
Well we have no other options as far as engagement goes. What else can we do?
>>
>>28017066
It'll still likely be an interceptor, and thus not really suited to a turning fight. If it can chase down an SR-71 (or the witch equivalent), it's likely optimized for raw speed over maneuverability.

[x] “We're all going to stay in close to the witch- they're not going to want to tangle with us.”

“We're all going to stay in close to the witch.” You state, straining your eyes to try and see her. It takes you a second to remember that you're not really looking outside- you're seeing a multispectral composite sensor image welded together by one very powerful computer displayed on very high quality screens arrayed to look like a traditional canopy. In not so many words- straining your eyes won't do a damned thing.

Still, you notice the tiny black spec trailing a thin ribbon of smoke before anyone else.

“Tally ho!” You call, adjusting your flight path while Merlin works to confirm that this is, indeed, your witch. “One bogie, trailing smoke, eleven o'clock high. Merlin, that our girl?”

“That's her, Frank.” She says. “I've got multiple bogies about one hundred klicks out and closing fast! At least six, maybe more, I've got intermittent contact with an additional group.”

“Do they know we're here?” You ask, right as the radar receiver alarm starts screaming.

“I-I'd say so, yes.” Merlin responds, sounding a bit like her groundside self for a second. “They've got a radar lock! They're firing! Two missiles on us, Two on the twins, Two on the witch.”

“I guess your Putin was a liar!” One of the twins says as they yank their fighter into evasives, dumping decoy emitters into the air.

“Hardly.” You grunt. “These must just not be his boys. Merlin?”

“I'm on it, Frank.” She responds, sounding harried. “Frank, you need to get us in close to the witch!”

1/2
>>
You comply, bringing your fighter up from under her- keeping a bare minimum separation- small enough that the witch can- and does- reach out to put a hand on your fighter to maintain her spacing.

“Careful, there, pilot.” She says, though you catch a grin when you look back. She's still trailing smoke from her rightside striker unit, and you can see the dark stains of frozen blood the arm of her outstretched jacked- but she seems ok. “I”ve been beaten up enough today, so don't go getting rough with me just yet.”

You snort, ejecting yet more decoys and hoping Merlin can pull off whatever plan she has. You're watching the distance to intercept- your fighter's sensors tracking the missiles diligently, counting down your time to live.

Well, time left to react, you don't really think these things could kill you, but it pays to not be cocky.

“Merlin?” You ask as the missiles close within twenty kilometers. Getting kind of tight, now.

“Almost got it-” She responds.

“There!” she exclaims, a second later. The remaining locked missiles on you sputter out and enter freefall, their rocket motors exhausted.

“They launched at the extreme edge of their range.” Merlin explains. “Those big amos missiles of theirs just couldn't close fast enough.”

“I feel like I should have known that.” You say, looking over your shoulder.

“Frank, they're still coming.” Merlin says. “They can't keep a lock on us long enough, and Clarissa knows her job, but they do have guns.”

“And I don't have a shield.” The Blackbird witch says. “I can't outrun them either, not with this damage.”

[] We’re staying with the witch- if these guys close to gun range, we'll turn on them.

[x] We’re staying with the witch- if these guys close to gun range, we'll turn on them.

“We're staying with the witch,” You order, looking over your shoulder. “If these guys do want to close to gun range, we'll turn on them.”

“They won't have radar lock.” Merlin says, confidently. “They're going to have to close for guns.”

“Let's- Let's descend a bit.” The blackbird witch says, her hand still flat against the broad back of your fighter- you look back and see that, instead of the usual stiff positioning of her strikers, they're waving in the slipstream slightly- fatigue or blood loss, you're not sure which.

“We'll be inside SAM coverage of the fleet soon-” Merlin calls out. “We're networked with the Ticonderoga and the Saratoga. Both ships are at general quarters and ready to fire on our solutions.”

“Can we get an over the shoulder shot?” You ask, looking back- thirty kilometers and closing fast.

“N-not with the AMRAAMS.” Merlin says, faltering a bit.

>>
“If you need to break off and engage them,” The Recon witch says, sounding tired, “Now's the time to do it. If you can keep them tied up, I'll be alright- but if they launch a missile at me, I don't stand much of a chance.” You notice that you're having to gradually bleed speed to keep her where she is- she's slowing down noticeably now.

“She's still inside my jamming envelope.” Merlin says. “As long as we stay with her, they can't launch on her.”

“Don't forget we're here- we could always- Frank! Break right!” Alyssa yells.

You respond instantly, and Merlin's shield- huge and a glaring, angry red, flares into life, absorbing the 23mm shells meant for you and the witch. You watch the big fighters, now suddenly in front of you, break madly to get out of your sights.

It's almost too easy to dispatch an agile after one, the twins breaking to engage another pair.

“O-out of options.” The Recon witch says as you work furiously to keep the big interceptors away. “H-hope you have friends on the way, pilot.”

[] “Why would I need friends? There's two of us here. It's hardly fair, the twins should escort you home.”
[] “I've got big friends down below. We're gonna drag them into the fleet.”

[x] “Why would I need friends? There's two of us here. It's hardly fair, the twins should escort you home.”

Not because heroism, but because rescuing the witch is the objective. Frank doesn't have to win, he has to stall. Once the Twins have taken her into SAM range, we're good to disengage, and we're faster.

[x] “I've got big friends down below. We're gonna drag them into the fleet.”
“I've got big friends down below.” You say, Looking around- the twins are doing a good enough job of keeping them off you, but they haven't shot any down, either. The one you sent the agile after must have ducked the missile- you still count six bandits.

“We're going to drag them into the fleet. Let's see how interested they are in downing you when they've got a pair of AEGIS ships shooting at them.”

“J-just make it... it fast.” the recon witch says.

Despite the herculean effort by the twins, some do get through- though they have to keep their airspeed up to keep the marauding wyvern from being able to get a good firing solution, they manage to put 23mm shells into Merlin's shield occasionally.

“You ok back there?” You ask, grunting after having to roll away from a particularly long string- fortunately, most of it missed, and the twins got a piece of him in return, sending him flying southward, a visible fire licking along his intake.

“I-I'm fine, Frank.” Merlin says. “But we need to end this soon. I'm not sure I can keep the shield up much more. “

“Damnit! These guys just won't die!” Alyssa rages over the squadron net. “And where the hell is our backup!?”

“CAP is on the way.” Merlin responds. “But they can't launch BVR because we're in here.”

“Damnit!” Alyssa says again.

You see the fighter diving- he's coming in from above, trying to limit your defensive options. Merlin's shield flares to life to absorb some fire, but it fails at the end- the last few rounds punch through it, but miss your fighter and the witch, sheltering beneath it.

“Shield’s gone, Frank.” She says, sounding defeated. “I-I'm sorry.”

1/2
>>
“It's ok, Merlin,” You respond, soothingly, breaking through the intermittent cloud deck and descending in full view of the fleet. “We made it.”

The Tico's forward twin-arm launcher and the Saratoga's Box launchers, mounted on her new island, belch fire and smoke, launching SAMs as fast as they can reload, swatting two of the big interceptors from the sky and damaging a third who breaks south, clawing for altitude. The remaining two undamaged Migs quickly follow suit, ejecting chaff and flares to escape the fleet's overwhelming firepower.

After your run, landing seems mundane. The witch lands first, and you wince when she slams into the crash net- a lighter weight, much more forgiving net, designed specifically for witches in out of control strikers. You have the twins land second, figuring they've burned far more fuel fighting off the foxhounds than you did.

Your landing is almost perfect- third wire, right on the money. You take a second to deplane, pulling off your helmet and letting it hang by it's umbilical as you lean your head back against the seat.

“F-Frank? Are you ok?” Merlin asks, her head appearing at the hatch above your head.

You nod. “Felt like we could have done better.”

She frowns. “I-I'm sorry...”

You shake your head. “No, not you, me. Not sure how, though. Seems like that wasn't much of a fight.”

Merlin looks away, then back down at you. “W-well, Tabitha and Rachel are coming. They don't look too happy though, m-maybe we did things right?”

You smirk. “Yeah, probably kiddo. Probably.”
