Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Alright guys, I have a suggestion. Please don’t try to be “edgy” when dealing with the Black Lady. Don’t start revealing sensitive information when we have barely met her. Don’t call her Melody, don’t reveal our relationship with Fang, don’t talk about Haven. Don’t even deny we are Erebus by introducing ourselves as Shadow. Not now. Not at our first impression. This is not the time for dramatic demonstrations, it’s the time for clever diplomacy. She has high expectations of us and we should, no, we must use that to our advantage. Since before I started following Shadow Quest, on thread 29, we wait for the opportunity to meet the Black Lady and gain her favor. We can’t afford to screw this up.

Here is how I think we should answer her:

<Unfortunately, much of my knowledge was also obscured. The energy required to seal the four hostile elemental lords was far too great, leaving me very weakened. As such, a great part of my memories have slipped away, yet to be recovered. Although my shards have been gathered, I am still far from my true power. Your assistance would be much appreciated in order to restore that power, as we face a great risk while I remain weakened.>

<In order to seal Hyperion and his allied elementals, I invested a part of myself. If I were to face serious damage, enough to risk my destruction, the seal could be breached, releasing Hyperion and the other three into Venia once more. To prevent the occurrence of such a catastrophe, I must fully restore my powers, as this is the only way to ensure the seal’s integrity. Unfortunately, I only have a hint as to how the seal can be fully patched, on account of my memory loss. Though I believe my palace holds more answers.>

Depending on how she responds, we then mention our island in the Endless Void.

Recent Events Summary:

You turn your gaze upon the final shard waiting at the Frozen Hand - Wrath. But first, you need to have a conversation with Ellendra Kalladar - the elven Queen that started all this so long ago.

But flying straight to the xenophobic elvish isles could pose many problems. But you know another elf - Valeria Kavanere - leader of those that call the Great Forest home, and members of your growing northern alliance.

Valeria is distant cousins with the elf queen, Kalladar - and they've been in contact. You gained great insight into your own nature, and the nature of the world. It was Queen Kalladar who gave you the ability to resist and deform from Erebus's programming - which was the only thing that stopped his ultimate goal of erasing Chaos. As you've reforged yourself, the burden on the queen has lessened.

But at the same time, Chaos is growing uncontrollably. Magic is getting stronger. Demons grow more powerful. How long can Venia last in a world of god-like titans? It must be brought back under control, or it, too, could consume the world.

Verlia and the queen agree that only Erebus's true might can do the job that must be done. With the future poised on a knife's edge, you traveled to the Palace of Shadow, Erebus's old base. First, you must subdue the final shard, and then set out to the place beyond Venia - from where Erebus originally came.

Your battle with Wrath tore open the palace and spilled out onto the snow-covered ice of the Frozen Hand, but you reigned victorious and united the final shard of your old self. In investigating old magic in the Palace, you saw a vision of what you believe to be Erebus's place of origination - a lone island in the Endless Void, far south past the edge of the world.

But a sudden new arrival has you on edge...

And then you see her, coming in through the cleared entryway. She appears like a Shadow, emerging from the swirl of the blizzard outside the palace. She picks her way forward through the strewn remains of your battle with Wrath as if every movement is carefully considered, but walks as gracefully as if that itself is an effortless task. If Sandalphon's eyes are steel, and Yi Fang's eyes are like fires, then hers are as cold as ice.

You cannot sense her at all. It's as if she isn't even there. For some reason, this bothers you more than the sun-like presence of the other two mages.

In her hand is a staff - one you've seen before. The Staff of Winds!

"Be at ease," she says to her mages. She looks at you, having no trouble pinpointing you behind one of the columns. The mages all follow her gaze in order to get a bead on your location. "I must offer you my apologies. I mean you know harm, and I pray you forgive my vanguard their presumption. We weren't sure what to expect. It is of little consequence to one such as yourself, but for ourselves, time obscures much knowledge. We had to be cautious."

The woman firmly plants herself between her 'vanguard' and you. "I have long awaited the return of the Lord of Justice." She lowers her head in a short, somber bow. "I am the Black Lady, Queen-Protector of Vampiria. Servant of Darkness, should you have me."

What is your response?

>Say nothing, but play up your role. Voice your displeasure with a cutting gaze at the mages that attacked you.

<The name Erebus is dead,> you say. <I am no longer him - I am Shadow.>

The Black Lady nods. "I see. Lord Shadow, then." She rolls the Staff in her fingers. Her touch is fitful, but focused. You feel a bit of magic running in its length. She has her guard up.

You look to the group of mages over her shoulder. <Why did they attack me?>

"We had felt magic emanating from the palace," she says. "I had thought that something was violating this place once more. After Do'Vak's untimely end, I decided to take action before more damage could be done." She pauses. "In your absence, I had allied myself with him to defend my lands from the Elvish navies. Their queen, herself a mighty mage, led the best of her royal guard into your palace to destroy him not a year past. My inattention spelled his doom - I decided that, in the future, I would react more quickly."

You nod in acknowledgement. Based on what you know, that seems believable on all points.

"I must ask you, Lord Shadow," she says. "I've long tried to discern what your goals were, back in the Great War. I have studied these halls carefully, but found little clues as to what motivated you. I might better serve you if I knew your true goals." She glances at the mages. "I could dismiss them, if you would rather talk in private." Then she looks back at you, still rolling the Staff in her hands. "Some say you simply wished for peace - to be left alone - and that you were driven to conflict by your enemies. Others say you wanted to end this world altogether. Another theory goes that you wanted to...replace it. But perhaps none of these truly capture what you were trying to do. I am curious...greatly so."

Why bring up the destroy-the-world thing?
Literally no reason to. Our current goals matter. The past is irrelevant, and it would only cause confusion to discuss the goals of Erebus when we ourselves aren't even 100% sure of what he intended.

It sounds like everyone wants peace through balance, but the terms by which you communicate that are up for debate.

Let's set the overall tone of the conversation:

Also, as I recall, there were a few people that disagreed with that at least the first line of dialogue because it seemed a bit too dickish for Shadow's character.
>>
>>27996299
how is that acting like a douchebag? the comment about the dragon just reinforces the idea that WE are in charge instead of her.

though that is the worst part of the dialouge and i would be fine with a change to it
>>
>>27996327
Yeah, it has a touch of superiority. But after the 100 that pretty much dominated all of her mages so far it ma be a bit warranted IC. O maybe just a variation that isn't quite so dickish?

>>27996332
I agree, but the first like should be changed to fit the tone.

makes sense...

harassing her to establish superiority isn't really in Shadow's playbook.

We like putting everyone on a level playing field, something that probably still carries over from Erebus in a way.

we can probably strike the part about "her dragon". She may know already...
>>
>>27996397
Yes. Very much so.

She very nearly admitted as much when she said that she allied with the dragon rather than stating that it was hers, so might as well.

<You're asking quite a lot for someone I do not know,> you say.

<...a fair point,> she says, switching to telepathy.

<Who are you, exactly? What are your goals? If you want honesty, then meet me with your own.>

She nods to you. <I...am queen of a land called Vampiria, south of the palace.>

<I am familiar with the lands and peoples of the modern age.>

<That saves us much time,> she says. <Then you know that this world is one that is divided. On one side is a nigh-theocracy of angels that worship a dead god of Light. On another is the bastion of Spirit that is Archon. And then we have the rising power of Kan-Abar, poised to potentially unbalance that long, unpleasant stalemate.>

<...and then we come to you,> you say.

<Indeed,> she says. <I did not fit in. Not with the Light, of course - but neither with Archon, or the other outliers. I never really intended to make my own country...rather, it made itself around me. Vampiria used to be many smaller, factitious nations. Once, they were united by a great warlord, but when he died, they fell to civil war and internal dispute. I was interested in you - in Erebus - and so I made my home there, in the far north of those war-torn lands.

<But for good or ill, I could not ignore the the innocents that died in pointless war. Or rather...I could not stand by when they begged me for help. Things started small. I would heal their wounds; I would offer them advice. A corrupt king drew his own men against him, and suddenly, they looked to me. Those that believed in a peaceful union to end the strife of their ancestors decided to follow me, thinking that my power could make that dream a reality.> She looks past you. Her eyes drift off. <It all happened so quickly. I thought of myself as a witch, a shaman. Maybe a town elder? But then I turned about and men with swords and banners were at my doorstep, pledging loyalty, asking me to lead them against their own nobles. Nobles that they hated, that stole everything from them. Their hopes rode on my strength in magic...and I could not bring myself to say no.

<We won the day, but our neighbors turned upon what they thought was a beaten carcass. I was forced to show them otherwise - and then, I was compelled to help their peoples, as well, for they were not much better off. Things snowballed from there. One by one, the countries of the north fell, and we united...under my rule, I suppose." She sighs. "But Archon, whom I thought might be an ally, so long ago...they turned against us to halt their own decay. The angels, of course, couldn't stand the rise of another nation under which darkness was not only tolerated, but accepted. And so my progress ground to a halt, aided by paranoid elves and an Archon needy of leverage over the Ring City.>

<Then you intend peace?> you ask.

>>27996698
We must be sure to ask how mages of light are treated in her country.

but so far i liker her, even if this is a prepared speech it fit in with current evidence and our picture of melody
>>
She nods. <This conversation could go on for quite some time, but I believe that tolerance and acceptance is the road to peace. Barring our way, unfortunately, are the fearful, the proud, and the ignorant. The difference between myself and Sandalphon is that I do not revel in the power I have attained. I wish my people had the power. I was just a scholar, once. But life never bows to simple wishes.

"Unfortunately, confronting Sandalphon openly is a risk I cannot take. There is a chance I might win such a fight, but unlike myself, he has many allies. If I fall, those in my care will be rendered vulnerable and helpless. And thus,> she says, gesturing with a hand, <there is the world as it stands. But now, new chaos from Kan-Abar. An opportunity to liberate the southern lands and expand my own territory? Or a menace that grows out of control, that must be stopped at all cost? But if I stretch my arm to beat back the greater evil, might the angels cut my hand?>

She looks at you. <But there was another way. I studied your palace, trying to find hints, clues. Your power is legend - and it is the only thing I could imagine capable of ending this long, rotten conflict. You are the leader we needed to tip the scales. You are the ally I need to protect my people - to help everyone in this world. I sensed you, Erebus - no. Shadow. I sensed your power in Kelvere. A hope beyond hope...you are here, at last.> She bows her head once again. <Lord Shadow. You are the Justice the world needs.>

What is your response?

Ok. We need to get the matter of Melody settled.

If she is Melody, that alone would give me a little bit more of a trust bump. Anything's better than "uberstrong vampire we know nothing about beyond her sneakiness and ability to talk a good game."

I would like to see Vampiria before offering her alliance. I think that we should go see the place, then tell her that we are going to discuss an alliance between Vampiria, Archon, [whatever we refer to Haven as that won't make people sperg out over MUH SECRECY], and the possibility of Arland + Kelvere in the future.

<To be honest, I have been thinking of contacting you for some time,> you say. <As you stand in my own element, I had thought you most likely to be sympathetic. My condolences on the loss of my dragon.>

The Black Lady makes a small smirk. <I am shocked to learn that the Arbiter of Justice has a sense of humor.>

<Though,> you say, feeling a bit pleased with yourself, <while time can be obscuring, as you said - it can also be revealing. I do not wish to tip the scales - only to balance them. But a balance between outright antagonists merely promotes this endless tension - a war that isn't quite a war, a dry heap of brush with a lit candle poised above it. There are many wrongs to right, and the scars the world holds are old and deep. Power - war - is not the answer. Our work begins with a binding of nations.>

<I think you're right,> she says. <That's why I've held off for so long. More war...it just won't do us any good. At best, many who don't deserve death will have it...and at worse, all I've built thus far will collapse. But who would be my ally? I cannot take the risk of betrayal. The shadow has no friends. You know this, better than anyone.>

<I met a young woman, once,> you say. <She understood well the difference between simply pursuing duty, and doing what is right, despite the chains of responsibility. You might know of her.>

The Black Lady frowns thoughtfully. <What was her name?>

The somber expression of the Black Lady is broken as her lips part in surprise. Her hands grip the Staff tightly. Her body stiffens.

The loss of composure lasts only an instant, but she seems rattled. She turns to her mages. A sharp hands cuts the air. "I must speak with him alone. Wait outside." The mages linger, eyes uncertain. "Now," the Lady commands.

The mages march out of the vast hall. They position themselves well outside the entrance, keeping the blizzard at bay with a simple ball of heated air that sits around them.

>Tell her to ready her nation, but to hold her position for now. You will call upon her when the time is right.

HERP, intellectuality secret alliances in the face of warprepping countries hello?! Great War time I guess.

>Tell her that Fang is more open to an alliance than she realizes. Offer to set up a meeting of the minds.

This is terrible. It would be much better to have Archon be prepared to make nice as soon as possible, long before all the other allies meet, because of how strong a sentiment they share in regards to the mysterious Vampiria.

This is the equivalent of coming up to a nearly consensus UN and saying, "But I also have THESE guys as my allies, no I'm not holding anything else back.."

incoming vote, etc.
>>
>>27997772
>mfw we can literally replace the angels with vampiria in the war against archon
> Atlantis would desert them because they are only there for the trade anyway
> Arland would be there only ally and flint is poised to take it back
> imagine how pissed sandalthong will be when all of the sudden HE is the bad guy
>>
>>27997876
God damn it that second was supposed to greentext of #2.
>>
Well, we voted to "surprise" the alliance then.
Ah well. That's going to be entertaining.
>>
Well, I think we have a consensus.

I'm pretty exhausted today, so I'm going to call the thread a bit earlier than usual.

This is a conversation finisher, so I'll do this bit and then we can decide on our next course of action.
>>
>>27997876
>>27997900
actually it would be better to have her meet with the leaders of our alliance first before visiting Arland. but it doesn't really matter because there is no way she is not going to join our alliance
>>
>>27997876
>>27997900
The whole Arland thing is basically "let's undermine the Ring City Empire's authority by pulling a huge alliance out of nowhere"

Arland doesn't even know it's going to happen.
>>
>>27997936
> but it doesn't really matter because there is no way she is not going to join our alliance

It's more of a matter of how accepting the others will be of them, and of us, for holding back such a major and integral point right up until the summit day.

It's the diplomatic equivalent of shouting that you have been and have chosen to deceive them.
>>
>>27997949
The funny thing is is that Arland is already half-way in it.

cause we all know that the parasite debacle is going to launch Flint either to the top or dam near it
>>
>>27997978
Pretty sure we'll be informing the other parties before it happens, dude. The meeting isn't happening for a while.
>>
>>27997708
>fang is a more intense version of her.
It's less about intensity than the fact that he willingly went through a magical lobotomy that ended up mutilating the part of him that otherwise would have given a fuck. The fact that he is even able to retain any bit of sentimentality is kind of impressive.

Her situation is actually really interesting, since she's actually sort of hybridized herself halfway between how Fang ended up and the first half of Abby's Archonium trial. (Wherein you might recall that since Abby was the one with power, she was called on to keep solving all of the problems within and between splintered communities, eventually uniting them and sort of stumbling into a position of power by virtue of having just kept helping everyone for so long that she basically became their leader.)

Even in our limited interaction, she sort of strikes me as how Abby would have turned out if the Empress fragment had "won" the Archonium war.
>>
>>27997978
Well we are goin to tell fang and our allies that she will be there to give them a heads up of course.

imagine how pissed sandalthong is going to be when all of the sudden the black lady, the shadow elemantal who wrecked his city, and fang are all sitting across from him

>>

Dude. Let the man have his rest. Don't be so selfish.
>>
>>27998003
Ehh maybe.

The main thing is that Melody wouldn't have thrown Abby into the Archonium like Fang did. she has ambition and manipulativeness but it is governed by her morals. unlike fang who doesn't care at all as long as the job gets done.

You'd better plan on getting that point across quick. Secret alliances piss off war prepping nations more than anything.

So, the list of everyone we need to inform;
>Everyone at Haven,
>Fang & Abby,
>The Elf Sister,
>The Duke?

I'm braindead right now, who're the others?

>>
Guys... how long has it been since we got EXP?

Sooooo. The Black Lady knows we're Erebus.

You guys don't think she would bring that up in her arguments for her side of the story during the summit?

To. Everyone. There.
>>
>>27998139
......No.
>>
>>27998126
Quite a bit IRL time. Less than 4 threads IIRC in quest time.
>>
>>27998139
We can tell her to keep it on the DL I think. I mean, she IS of the shadow element, and she has a lot more subtlety going for her than we do.
>>
>>27998139

She had better not. We're trying to move past that name and everything associated with it.
>>
<I have learned,> you say, <that what you are is of little consequence. It is what you do that matters.

<I have not been quietly lingering in the shadows,> you continue. <Soon, there will be a summit in Arland. With help from a few friends, I will forge an alliance leveled squarely at Kan-Abar. Many powers will be in attendance - and the Ring City will be poignantly absent. No one will be able to deny that the Black Lady's power would be vital to facing the Demon Lords.>

"What powers?"

<Kelvere. Archon. Felnoir. Among others.>

The Black Lady merely stares at you. "...and how did you arrange...Yi Fang will be at this summit? In Arland? In person? Archon and Arland?!"

<It involves quite a few happy coincidences, and quite a bit of time...but yes.>

She lowers the Staff to her side. "Then...this is a chance. To lower barriers. Forge friendships. Fang, in Arland. Fang, looking to work together with others?" She frowns deeply. "I don't believe it. He has to have an angle. He always has an angle. Especially after..." she trails off.

<He's become frustrated with Archon's situation,> you say. <Repositioning Archon the keystone of world peace - and supplanting the Ring City in that role - is the driving force of his movement. If we have your support...>

"Then you, yourself, have been in contact with Fang? He told you he'd be doing these things in person?"

<Yes.>

"By the elements," she whispers. She begins to pace back and forward. Her footsteps clack on the stone, echoing in the vast chamber. You can see the wheels turning inside her head.

Eventually, she stops, and wheels about, facing you directly. "...I will attend your summit,> she says. "If you can make a guarantee. Should the cards fall against me, and harder, crueler voices win out...will you stand with me?"

>con't
>>
You are silent as you consider her request.

"Vampiria..." She sighs. "I am the linchpin that holds it secure. Such exposure is dangerous. I must have your word on this. It may mean alienating others. If you cannot afford that cost, I may be better off holding back, for now."

What is your response?

>ask her more about her relationship with Fang
>agree to provide your protection, should it be necessary
>write-in
>>
>>27997772
Yeah but you know eventually it is going to either get out or someone is going to put two and two together. Or the other lords with tell everyone when we free them
>>
>>27998234
>ask her more about her relationship with Fang
This is a very serious thing to agree to. We know Auriel isn't going to like this and we'll need to talk to her and other potential problems about the situation.
>>
>>27998234
>>agree to provide your protection, should it be necessary
If anyone turns on her, they're already going against us in such a way as would draw our actions regardless.
>>
>>27998234
A choice between decisions or characterization to help us make a better decision. HM. HOW DIFFICULT.

>ask her more about her relationship with Fang
>>
>>27998263
All we need to do to convince auriel is give her a tour of vampiria. To show her they aren't evil
>>
>>27998234
>ask her more about her relationship with Fang
Not a lot of people will be accepting her, but maybe a few people like Abigail and Adavan could help us.
>>
>>27998234
i can take people away who are endangered. i can stand, myself, against fang-or you-or Sandalphon, if need be. there is a guarantee of non-aggression, and i can enforce it.
>>
>>27998218
>She begins to pace back and forward. Her footsteps clack on the stone, echoing in the vast chamber. You can see the wheels turning inside her head.

SM I'm not sure but I think I've noticed you describe this think-pacing with both the Duke and Yi, you really like this method don't you?

>>27998297

>>
>>27998234
Agree but ask about her relationship anyway
>>
>>27998218
>Her footsteps clack on the stone
HA HA! She isn't naturally stealthier!
>>
>>27998234

>ask her more about her relationship with Fang

Also:

<If they turn on you, then in all likelihood they will do so with me. You will have my support if it comes to that.>
>>
>>27998313
We'll want to take a tour of Vampiria ourself first. Y'know, in case they're putting light mages in camps when Melody isn't looking and whatnot.
>>
>>27998234
The main conflict I forsee is going to be with Auriel, who flat-out told us that if we side with Vampiria, she's out. But she may have softened on that somewhat, thanks to the Moonsong situation.
Something we could drop to further cement Archon's change of ways is the destruction of Bad Place.
I wish to know more about her current relationship with Fang.
>>
>>27998234
Can we accompany her to a pool in her country and get a word from Fang and Auriel? They're a bit more plugged into the nature of this summit than we are. We need to know if this'll blow up on us before we give an answer either way.
>>
>>27998311
Sandalthong, Fang, and the Black Lady all about to go at it and destroy the city in the process and shadow has to maximum nightblaze and play babysitter

I am now wondering how things would have gone if we'd taken the shadowmages to Vampiria instead of the forest.

<You seem very familiar with the archmage, though he knows little of you,> you say.

"...you know who Melody was." She raises the Staff. "You know what this is. What it means to him."

<...I do.>

"I took it, Shadow," she says, "because I thought he would be not far behind. Because I thought that with this..." A grim smile crosses her face. "I was young. And stupid, by proxy. There was a time...we...shared many things together. But after he entered the Archonium...he changed for the worse. He became like his father. He..." She shakes her head, then looks back at the staff. "With this, I thought to lure him out of that damn city, get him to chase me. And when he found me, I'd snap him out of it. Things would go back to the way they used to be. But he..." Her voice becomes soft. "He never showed up. And you know him. You know how he is, now. Hellbent on duty. He's woven so many webs he's caught himself in them."

She glances up to you. "I can't rely on him. He doesn't even know I'm me, not anymore. Melody is a footnote on the pages of his life, and I have no intention of trying to make it otherwise. We're different people, now...and I fear that his heart has been rotted by his own self-imposed isolation."

<Perhaps he's more flexible than you think,> you say. <He'll need to know you're coming, at least, among others. For Arland itself...this is all going to be a bit of a surprise. But the others need to know you'll be there. I can't surprise them like that.>

"...I will trust your judgement on the matter, assuming I have your protection," she says.

<If the hearts and minds we mean to win over turn on you,> you say, <it is very likely they'll turn on me.>

"Then...?"

What do you do?

>yes, I'll stand with you if things go south

There's clearly no middle ground here. It's all in or all out.

I still have that -1- to use, after all...

>>27998818

I'm actually moving from a store I hate to a store I really like (within the same company), but my old boss didn't want to let me go, because I'm a valuable employee. But the very reason I wanted to leave is because I hate his guts. He's not a bad person, but he's a terrible manager and extremely condescending. He also tends to give contradicting orders depending on the mood he's in. I was actually on the verge of quitting outright. The stress that place caused me was a major contributing factor to the car accident I was in. I was busy thinking that rather than paying attention to the fucking road.

I recently had a very intense conversation with him, and ended up guilting him into it without telling him that the reason I wanted to leave was because of him.

So that's in the works. In the meantime, to cause as little trouble as possible, I'm just saying -yes- to everything. At the same time, I've been working for four different pharmacies on a regular basis (still in the same company, just different stores). My moving to one pharmacy puts the other three in a tough spot. Now, I hate the one, so I don't give a shit, but I want to keep my evil boss happy until I'm well and gone. The other two I actually really like, so I don't want to leave them handing.

I ended up severely over-promising myself, hence no days off for five weeks.

BUT! It's almost over and I'm pretty much getting what I wanted. Sometimes you have to suck it up and put your nose down.

In an odd twist of fate, the car accident actually ended up helping me with that. I wasn't able to get home until my boss left for a week of vacation. That gave me time to cool my head and really think about what to say, and so I was able to get through it without making it personal.

But boy did I want to tear him a new asshole...

I wasn't actually working on anything, my mind was just boiling over it the whole time. I was distracted.

I'm not saying it was his fault; that's not true. It was my fault. But when you're in a situation that's so stressful that you get in car accidents, you've got to change your environment. That was basically how I put it to him, also mentioning that had my little sister been sitting in the passenger seat of that car then I never would have forgiven myself.

He caved pretty quickly after that.
