Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are LARA WILLIAMS, a Gallian ace fighter pilot for the Demons of Randgriz mercenary company. After graduating from the Sturmfuhrer Academy's flight training school, you've been thrust into the skies over Erusea, where so far you've been making mincemeat everything Erusea could throw at you until you ran into Yellow 13, their top pilot which you had invariably fought to a draw.

As a result, you've become rather famous in this hemisphere of the world, though you're not really sure if you deserve the reputation or not, considering you've just happened to be in the right place at the right time, especially where cameras are involved.

However, not everything was sunshine and roses. You had recently been brought to near death after "accidentally" getting shot up by Tombstone, a rival ace that you had wronged in the past. You very nearly died and the spirit of your old Falcon fighter plane may or may not have sacrificed itself to ensure you make a full recovery so you could keep flying. Painkillers are weird like that.

Anyways, thanks to the magic of ragnaid, you're now itching to get back in a plane and into the air.

"What do you MEAN there's no planes for me to fly!?" You blink. After spending several days in a hospital tent recovering from dozens of bullet wounds, this was one of the LAST things you wanted to hear.

You're currently back on the Kestrel in the main hangar bay. Unfortunately, unlike a few days ago, you see a few less pilots and a LOT less planes occupying the deck...

"I'm sorry, Ribbons." Heartbreaker, your wing leader, sighs. "Our air wing took a beating in that last battle. Most of our pilots are fun, but half our planes are either too damaged to fly or completely trashed. We're fixing them up at the Bastion as fast as we can, but replacements are few and I'm giving priority to pilots who DIDN'T die on the operating table for fifteen seconds."

"It was more like eight." You frown. "Come on, you KNOW I can handle it!"

"I'm sorry, Ribbons, but you're grounded for he time being. If we can get some freshly repaired planes transferred, I'll consider it." Heartbreaker sighs.

Well, that was a huge downer. You sigh and consider your options. You COULD try badgering one of your wingmen to loan you their planes, but that wasn't something you felt fully comfortable with. You could try going over Heartbreaker's head and appealing directly to Captain Jurgens, too, but you're not sure if you had the clout for that sort of thing. You also heard that Lucas and his team were on board now as well, prepping for some kind of big mission. Maybe you could go see him, if only just to complain about the situation.

Well, you suppose you could just go gripe about the situation to Lucas. He was always a pretty good listener. You slowly make your way off the hangar deck down to the troops decks below. Those Tier One guys loved setting up in one little corner of the ship, so you had no doubt Lucas would be down there, or at least somebody who would know where he is.

You see some other T1 operators milling about the entrance to their little domain. You see them staring at you, as if you were something that didn't belong.

"You lost or something, pilot?" One of them grumbles. The way he says that last word kind of bothers you.

>Be polite. Just ask if they've seen Lucas.

"Well..." You give your most innocent smile and even twirl a bit of your hair for additional effect. Even the most hardened of operators still had hearts,so you were kind of banking on that to get them to trust you. "I've just been looking for my brother, Lucas. You know, kinda short, with really fluffy brown hair?"

You see the operators noticeably cough and look away, and you grin. You've still got the charm. No guy could stay menacing with a straight face when you went all out.

"Y-yeah, he's in there, third door to the right." One of the operators mumbles, pointing in the correct direction.

"Thank you so much~!" You smile as you walk past. To really strike it home you put a bit of a swing in your step, making your skirt swish side to side...

You hear a loud BANG like something fell over behind you, but you don't want to break your focus so you don't turn around to see what had happened. You finally reach the door and give it a good knock.

"Just a second!" You hear Lucas' muffled voice from inside. The door then swings open, and you see Lucas, his normally fluffy hair still damp from a recent shower. "Oh hey, Lara, I didn't expect to see you here, what's up?"

"Ah well, I'm just really pissed off, is all." You sigh. "Can I come in?"

"Sure." Lucas nods and steps aside. You just walk in and drop down onto his bunk.

"It's just not fair!" You gripe. "I've been flying missions since the beginning of our deployment here, I'm an established ace, and done everything my wing lead has asked of me and more, and he can't even spare a single plane for to fly in!"

"Oh, wow." Lucas sighs, realizing you're just using him to vent your frustrations on. "I thought the Kestrel had a lot of extra planes in case of losses."

"Evidently not." You pout. "I mean, I get shot up, make a full recovery, and now I have nothing to do but sit on my ass."

"Please don't curse so much..." Your brother shakes his head.

"Hmph. Well, what else am I going to do?"

"Well, actually, I was going to go see Nemo. Apparently SImo's making her break out all the really fancy stuff, seeing as how we're going on a big mission and all. You wanna tag along?"

"Sure, I guess I can tag along." You standing back up.

With Lucas' presence, none of the other operators seem to consider bothering you or anything, and you leave their little corner of the ship with considerably less effort than you got in before. Personally, you've never really gone into Nemo's lab much, much less met the scientist herself. You've only ever been delivered the smart lances she developed, and then submitted written reports on their performance.

"Well, if you haven't met Nemo before, she's well..." Lucas frowns as he tries to find the right word, "a bit odd."

"I'm sure I can handle it." You say.

However, what you're more curious about is this really big mission Lucas and his team were going on. Last you checked, on day they were at base, then the next, they were in the capital, and literally the day after that they were on the Kestrel with all the other T1 teams. Something definitely was going down.

Ah, well, that was no fun, only telling you the bare details, but Lucas was always a real big stickler for rules so you guess it wouldn't be that easy to get him to ignore OPSEC. Well, that doesn't mean you can't still have a bit of fun, so you decide to change the subject.

"So the, Lucas, how's things being going with Faaaaallyyyyynnnn~?" You coo, hugging your brother from behind and whispering in his ear. "Did you two go. all. the. way?"

However, if Lucas wanted to press the issue any further, he missed his chance, as you had already reached Nemo's lab. However, as you enter, you don't immediately see anybody.

"Huh, that's strange, Nemo's normally asleep on the table there." Lucas frowns.

Then the two of you hear a loud banging in the back and you rush over to see Falynn and Nemo lugging around crates and fiddling with various gadgets.

"Do we need this?" Falynn takes out something that you don't even have the first clue what it does.

"Nope, junk it"

"Mmmmm, I guess Lucas can go first." You say, nodding to your brother.

"Oh, thanks!" Lucas grins as he follows Nemo.

Falynn also moves to follow but you cut her off.

"Um. Um." Falynn stammers. "IdontknowwhatyourtalkingaboutIgottagonow!"

She takes off after Lucas before you can do anything else. Well, you tried, at least. You just grin and shake your head. . You follow the others to another little chamber tucked away at the back of the lab, where you see something rather monstrous and imposing.

"W-what the hell is that?!?" You shout.

"Juggernaut Heavy Assault Armor." Nemo says nonchalantly. I actually designed it to work with the Assault Pack. I took a page from the heavy armors Artificial Valkyria wear and designed something normal humans could wear while giving roughly equivalent protection."

"So... what's it made of?" Falynn asks.

"A series of layers of alternating synthetic fibers, steel armor, ceramic, and ballistic plates all interweaved together." Nemo drones on. "Will pretty much stop anything short of tank round, but it's naturally extremely heavy, as its name implies.

A thought occurs about the Juggernaut armor: for all its protection offered, it's probably gonna be pretty damn heavy. If we ever get knocked into a puddle of water that goes higher than our face, we're gonna be fucked over. We'll also be fucked over if we happen to be wading right into a White Phosphorus attack by the enemy--that shit will dig into our armor while melting it.

We should request Nemo creates some quick-release latches or pull-strings on the vest, greaves, and vambraces--just in case we're in a situation where we need to get it off quickly.

"You should try it on!" You say.

"Well... it certainly LOOKS safe..." Falynn nods.

"All right, just hold still." Nemo says.

After about ten minutes of fitting and gruntwork, Lucas finally manages to put the entire armor on. He's barely even recognizable, but he definitely looked really menacing.

"So how does it feel?" You ask.

"Surprisingly easy to move around in." Lucas says, his voice a bit muffled. He does a few basic movements and twists. "Probably going to real hard to run in, and not really that easy to see, but it's otherwise pretty effective."

"Good, while you're at it, you can try this." Nemo hands Lucas another MG. "It's not an exact copy, but I applied the lessons I learned from analyzing the Ruhm. This is the modern variant I came up with."

"Nice!" You guess Lucas is probably beaming under that helmet of his.

"Well, that's nice and all, but don't leave out lil' Falynn here!" You say, putting your arm around her shoulders. "Can't she have something nice?"

Nemo turns to look at her and narrows her eyes.

"Hmmmmm, I might have something." Nemo nods. She ducks down and heaves up what looks like a Fencer shield.

"Um, last I checked, Falynn's an engineer, not a fencer." Lucas points out.

"I am aware of that." Nemo nods. "It's smaller and made out of lighter materials, since engineers have to carry a lot of weight already. It's good against most types of small arms except for anything past 7.62mm or AP rounds. But, using this means you'll be restricted to one handed weapons or tools while its deployed."

Bragg is exactly the same class, and he would arguably need it more, considering how his mobility is already limited by lugging around a HMG.

Sparky and Edwin are Lancers and some of the most valuable members of the team, more protection is always good for them. Not like they're scouts or anything.
>>
>>27981673

Though the risks to Edwin and sparky is they mainly go after tanks and shit. Which the armor can't really defend against. Kind of better if they can move out of the way in decent time.

Lancer's are high priority targets, although Edwin and Sparky would probably be better off with just a stronger chest plate and helmet rather than the full suit.

"Yeah, it would probably be a big help to you." You say to Falynn and lean in."You could also use it to protect Lucas for a change!"

Falynn blushes at the thought and just nods silently.

"And last but not least." Nemo at waves you to follow her. "There is this project I have been working on."

"I've been told that Emmeria and even the Empire already have jet aircraft in mass production, which is a bit vexing, but understandable." Nemo says as she slips her way past crates and piles of disassembled junk. "But this jet, I've been working on for a number of years to get it 'right'. I doubt the Emmerians and Imps even spent any more than a few months on their designs."

She then brings you to a small little clearing in the sea of junk, to show you what had to be one of the most beautiful planes you had ever seen. That smooth, sleek shape and those delta shaped wings... it looked almost heavenly to you.

"I call it the Dragon." Nemo continues, patting the plane's side. "It's been in development for so long because honestly, we've been breaking a lot of molds with this. Delta wings are an unproven concept, and we've found that while they give extremely good speed, they lack in life which makes their flight characteristics rather unstable. But... we believe we've alleviated those problems by using a compound delta wing, that you see here."

You really had no clue what Nemo was saying, but you don't care. You had to have this plane. You HAD to.

"So, do you like it?"

"Hell yeah! When can I fly it?!" You say, your eyes sparkling like Lucas' previously were.

"Well... me and Falynn already did all the touch up work. All we have to do is get it to the elevator up to the hangar deck, fuel it up, and it should be ready to go."

"C-can I get in it?" You ask.

"I don't see the problem." Nemo shrugs.

You give the girliest, highest pitched squeal you can manage and huge Nemo.

"You're welcome."

"Heh, well you have fun with that, Lara." Lucas grins as he finishes extracting himself from the Juggernaut armor. Well, me and Falynn have to be heading back now. Good luck with that new plane!"

"Uh huh yeah, bye." You say, totally not listening to him. You pop the canopy and look inside. There, rolled up perfectly in the seat is a bright blue scarf. It almost looked bit like...

...a ribbon.

Smiling, you just pick up the scarf and unconsciously wrap it around your neck.

"Hey, so how do I look?" You ask Nemo, doing a quick pose.

"Silly." Nemo responds bluntly. "But I can see the appeal."

Grinning, you jump into the cockpit proper and start familiarizing yourself with the controls.

"I have to warn you," Nemo says through the radio, "while they work on the same basic principles, flying a jet is fundamentally different from flying a propeller plane. It goes at much faster and speeds and consequently exerts much higher G forces in maneuvers."

"Okay." You nod.

"So, I can get the Captain to clear a test flight, if you want."

"Well, I should probably familiarize myself with the controls first before I do any actual flying." You say.

"A wise choice." Nemo nods. "Well, take our time."

It takes at least another week before you're confident in flying the Dragon for real. During that time, the Kestrel changes its course, breaking away from its holding pattern near the Bastion and it begins to drift to the west, towards where presumably that special mission was going to take place.

Because of the tight timeframe, Heartbreaker and Edge reluctantly allow you to take the Dragon out for combat operations, despite you not having that many hours in it. However, you've been doing nothing but learning the controls, and as you had shown previously with the Falcon, you had a natural aptitude for learning the quirks and characteristics of planes.

You have seen news reports and heard stories that Artemis had also gotten its hands on some Northstars and were equipping their aces with it. Similarly, Erusea was allegedly being sold Imperial issue jet fighters, though nobody had any clue what they looked like or what they were capable of.

Also, Min was no longer on the Kestrel. He had been transferred off while you were being hospitalized as part of a prisoner exchange to get back some Gallian pilots that had been shot down and captured. You felt kind of sad that neither of you had the chance to say goodbye to each other. You also had some conflicting feelings about the thought of facing him in battle again.

Currently, you were flying out to rendezvous with an allied air squadron to escort them to a waiting Emmerian aircraft carrier. With the Dragon, you can fly higher faster than anything you flew before, and you enjoyed hanging out over 50,000 feet in the air, bouncing and scaring the shit out of the older prop planes.

However, this time, you look down and see that you're not just escorting any squadron, but a squad full of Northstars. In fact, one of them bears a very familiar dark grey paint scheme...

Tombstone.

No doubt they have an industrial advantage. However, the Empire tends to use much of it on overly complicated, underperforming "Wunderwaffen".
>>
>>27982224
A) the Empire is very set in their ways and to be honest excluding genius darcsen made things, they did out-muscle the usual tanks.

B) Both those counties send resources fighting and aren't as prone to making high end prototypes. The fact that Maximillian took the few they did make and got them wrecked likely didn't go over too well.
>>
>>27982224
>>27982242
Gallia pretty much INVENTED planes, and Darcsens are traditionally very skilled engineers due to the fact that they're often relegated to industrial jobs. That's why one of the stereotypes of them is that they stink of grease and oil. Gallia is one of the few nations that actually listens to them.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the other nations had a lot of conservatives that cockblocked innovation. This is a setting where stable monarchies still exist.

The Demons aren't even officially part of the Gallian army proper. Yes, they get a lot of R&D funding from the government, but in terms of sheer numbers and production capacity, they pale in comparison to their larger neighbors.

I mean, shit, the Edelweiss was the exact same thing. You gonna bitch that Gallia's OP because they had ONE tank that was obviously better than anything else the Imps had?
>>
>>27982587
>>27982597

That's not how it works anons, the Empire and Emmeria can afford to have a larger number of troops because of their larger resource base, not because there was some arbitrary decision to go for a large number of redshirts. Gallia doesn't have that number of troops because it simply can't match.
>>
>>27982621

Honestly the Edelwiess kind of didn't. Compared to some of the batshit tanks they where using. Was better then the average tank though.
>>
>>27982645
Though the Edelweiss had a bunch of prototype equipment. Such as being able to be operated by 2 people (Cmdr. & Driver) by replacing the loader with an auto-loader.
>>
>>27982645
Were you even playing the same game? The base Edelweiss was good enough to take on basic Imp tanks. When fully upgraded, it was literally fucking unstoppable, like plopping a modern MBT into WWII.
>>
>>27982621
>Rope the Belkans into help building them a flying carrier
>Said flying carrier is now controlled by the Demons instead of Belka for God knows for what reason
>Also battleship

You were saying?
>>
>>27982662

Then you hit that one crazy motherfucker who's name I forget. The one with the tank that was like 20 feet long.
>>
>>27982637
Thus Gallia starts to train their troops as soon as they can hold a rifle. Someone who has a decade or more of experience usually outmatches a conscript.
>>
>>27982637
the VMQ-verse doesn't work like that, even in the games. for some reason, all the badasses and geniuses in the world gathered in one small country about the size of poland and decided to kick ass
>>
>>27982679

Then your industrial base wouldn't even exist, because so much time is being put into training.
>>
>>27982689

That's called terrible world-building anon.
>>
>>27982679

Eh not really. If it wasn't for Welkin Gallia would be a smoking crater. Imperials where badass just one had a a genius and a valk helping and narrative luck.
>>
>>27982691
It's actually a year or two of militia training when they're teenagers.
>>
>>27982689
You realize you basically described the the first game, as well, considering that Gallia's most skilled and badass soldiers all just happened to be gathered together in a single unit under a TACTICAL GENIUS and his MECHANICAL GENIUS sister.
>>
>>27982721

Which means they're not much better than everyone else on average, because that training and the physical conditioning you get from it isn't constantly being reinforced.

Not to mention that everyone else still has far more resources than you.
>>
>>27982691
I assume you've never heard of the militia? Compare to the modern National Guard: As shown in recent conflicts they are on par with regular Army, and only go out a weekend a month, with an additional 2 weeks per year. That isn't much of a time commitment.
>>
>>27982734
You mean like Finland vs Russia during the Winter War?
>>
>>27982477
"Okay, you're on!" You grin.

"Awesome!" White Fang's enthusiasm just oozes through the radio. "So, how do you want to do this. Straight up speed, or maneuverability? Or a little of both?"

You pause to ponder your options. From what you've heard, the Northstar was designed as an interceptor, so speed was its top priority. One the other hand, Nemo had told you the Dragon was intended to be equal parts interceptor and dog fighter, so you're pretty sure you can out turn White Fang, but not necessarily outrun him.

>Well, you need a challenge. Go for speed!

Because, you know, Jager happens to be personal friends with the leaders of both countries?

And don't blame Merc for that. It was the readers who wanted Jager to BEFRIEND Karla.
>>
>>27982672
I'd imagine the Demons often act in the interests of Gallia, without actually being Gallia. You can see the benefits.
>>
>>27982748
Uh yes, because the US is totally retarded enough to not give them additional training before sending them off to a warzone chockfull of guerrillas.

>>27982749
Finland would have been crushed should the war have continued, despite the disproportionate casualties, should the USSR not have other priorities.
>>
>>27982842
Because the Demons REALLY NEEDED a flying carrier and battleship. As in it overrided the strategic imperatives of the leaders of both countries.

>>27982844
And I'm sure they need a battleship and a flying carrier for that.
>>
>>27982780
You decide to make things fair, and incorporate both speed and maneuverability challenges. What was the point of a competition otherwise?

"Okay, see those marker bouys in the water? We'll start off by weaving through each and every one, then it's a straight shot over open sea to the carrier. How's that sound?"

"Sounds like you're gonna lose!" White Fang laughs. "Loser buys the winner a drink?"

Did you forget Jager, OUR Jager happens to be still in charge of the Demons?

It's not a question of need. It was never a question of need. We /tg/ played this guy for the entirety of VMQ1. He quite literally has /tg/ bouncing around inside his head telling him to do stuff.
Jager for all intents and puposes as far as VMQ goes is /tg/ personified.

I also forgot to mention, Gallia has a stupidly high concentration of Ragnite. Everyone wants it, the Empire and the Feds to fuel their war machine.

>>
>>27982971

They have a lot of ragnite, I don't see anything about it being the biggest, not do I see anything about financial and economic resources to call upon.

This is equivilent to saying that Australia should be a world superpower because it has a lot of material resources.
>>

To the extent of ordering in a flying carrier and battleship?

Are you bullshitting me? That's an absolutely retarded reason for anyone with a semblance of intelligence.
>>

Gallia actually sells and utilizes their resources. Australia doesn't exploit them as much as they should.
>>
>>27982978

Thing is that made a lot of sense for him to do. Considering the majority of the circumstances. Hell the best action scene that happened in the first game came from him being desperate enough to challenge a random knight pride.
>>
>>27983002

Australia is making a shitton of money thanks to the resource black hole that is china. And yet China (and America for that matter) still remains wearing the pants when it comes to relationships.
>>
>>27982999

That's the thing we really don't know context here. It's been 20 some years since then. So it's kind of hard to get a bead on exactly what happened. Right now we are kind of shooting in the dark.
>>
>>27982902
"How about we up the stakes to dinner?" You say.

"Hey, if you're offering!" White Fang laughs. "You ready?"

"Yeah."

"Well LET'S GO THEN!"

Both your Dragon and White Fang's Northstar takes off, and you quickly come to the buoys that will serve as your makeshift markers. Your hand hovers over the throttle as you try to decide the speed to take it.

>Go fast, to ensure you can beat White Fang here.

That's exactly what I'm telling you.

But as anon said, it has been 20 years. Jager has had a LOT of time to work with the contacts that he's accrued over his career, additionally has debts owed to him that can be called in, if not in straight up technology, in materials and resources to acquire that technology.

It's not even that strange, in the span of 20 years in our own world we progressed from horse back to ancestral MBT's. We went from prop planes with barely any application to strategic bombing campaigns. Another 20 years later and we're fielding planes that literally use their throttles as a missile countermeasure, and in reply we made missiles that have international range for the express purpose of combating such aircraft.

If you want to complain about bad world building take a look at our own world first, I assure you real life is about ten times more outlandish if you look in the right places.
>>
>>27983051

Honestly It's not so bad for me. All of Valkyria chronicles was harder for me to swallow then this.
>>
>>27983075
Believe it or not, I believe that Merc can progress beyond making Gallia the special snowflake capital of the world.

Not to mention you guys are the ones who took my disgust at Nemo building a super fighter jet better than everyone else has so far (and belittling them for only putting in a few months, that has to be one of the stupidest comments I've seen in this quest) and turn it into an argument.

Oh, and nice concession there.

Do you even realise what kind of investment it is to get a battleship/carrier? Especially if you're just a bloody PMC?

Here's a hint, you have the vast majority of nations not having what one fucking PMC has. Unless this is the world of Ayn Rand where exceptional people can shit out gold bricks if they tried (and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised at this rate considering the bullshittery seen so far), this is fucking retarded with anyone knowing how to worldbuild without pulling shit out of your ass.

>It's not even that strange, in the span of 20 years in our own world we progressed from horse back to ancestral MBT's. >>
>>27983224
White Fang, White Fang what are you doin bro, that isn't how you fly plane.
>>
>>27983228
Unfortunately for White Fang, and fortunately for you, White Fang's insistence on going through the turns full speed works against him in the most spectacular way, in that as he goes through the first turn, something happens with his control systems, apparently being unable to respond at such speeds, and his plane just shoots past in a straight line. You slow down briefly to see if he's okay, but it doesn't seem like he's going to smash into the sea. By the time he gets his craft back under control, you're already through the turns in the straight away. Even if he completes the course and goes at full speed, there was no possible way he could catch up.

"Damn, guess I lost this one." White Fang laughs. "II didn't really expect my plane to do that."

"Yeah, well we're all learning." You say reassuringly. "Also, you owe me a dinner. A really expensive one~."

"Yeah, yeah, I figured that." White Fang laughs.

"Ribbons, White Fang, what the hell are you doing all the way out there?" You hear Magic's familiar, exasperated voice call out on the radio.

"Just taking the scenic route back. What's up?" White Fang says.

You swoop past, firing as you go, but you can't really score a solid hit, as the enemy planes are just moving too fast, though you're pretty sure you might have nicked a couple.

As you and White Fang pull out of the dive, you finally get a good look at what your facing and your heart races.

It looked like you've finally come face to face with the Imp jet fighters. And these particular ones had yellow bellies. Good old Yellow Squadron.
