You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Well, the party to celebrate Sylvie's win went over pretty well! Nicolette and Melanie stuck around, and you even got to her some stories from when they were all little kids!

And to top it off, you managed not to make anyone mad!

The rest of the day went uneventfully, aside from getting some more reading done. After reading for as long as you could manage, you eventually drifted off to sleep.

>Congratuations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

Reposting the list I put up yesterday for the training:

General things to work on:
1) Mana Training
2) Physical Training (General Workout/sparring)
3) Sketching

Specific Things to improve/obtain:
1) One Attack Spell
2) One Defence Spell
3) Sketch the map into memory. Then burn it.
4) Combat Casting
5) Further Reading
6) Sword Training under Aurnard

Just throwing up a possible list of things we need to do during the timeskip.

What much is there to explore? We already covered the basis of the castle.
>>
>>27963602
Magic is covered in learning spells and there was already mention of practicing sketches. Also, what's the point of exploring during a timeskip? Not like we'd actually get to see where we went and we don't really get the opportunity to do that anyway with our job as bodyguard.
>>
Voting is silly given that you already timeskipped half the day away.
Warm friendly castle is getting boring anyway.

We need actual danger to be a bodyguard as opposed to what is more or less a fellow student.

Alright, the timeskip has it.
Prior to this point, Reinhold's been at the castle for eleven days. The timeskip will cover another ten days, up to the day before leaving for Marconetti.

MP building and training basic swordery with Arnaud are a given. Beyond that, there are some optional things that you can pick out, I'm sorting them out right now.

Timeskips don't need to include micromanagement, just make the reader feel like they weren't excluded by commentating on the missed time when you return to the present.

have the PC complain about bruises from training, maybe passing comments about how you're having a proper conversation with the princess for the first time in days as her father has demanded so much time in briefing and shit and she's been exhausted
have us organize a magic lesson during the timeskip that is booked for just after we come out of cryogenic sleep, etc.
>>

The Church's Mantra-based magic is based specifically on strong belief in their god and following their doctrine. Barring a genuine inspiration of faith, it's not really the kind of thing that someone can just get into.

Just a note, belief in some kind of god is a given for the VAST majority of people in this world. There are plenty of people who don't give it much thought, but outright atheism isn't really a thing.

I feel the same way. Sure, we can use it to improve skills of our character, and maybe a lot more than what was listed along with getting to know all of the characters more. It's sort of like Persona 3 in a sense, but at the same time, I'd rather it not be like Persona at all. Persona was pretty slow because you didn't progress through the story of the game unless you did all of this stuff, but at least we won't be horribly punished if we skipped all the days.

Archelon has been pretty good about writing so far, so I'm assuming we're going to get at least a few snatches of cool things that have happened, like our next day off and such. By the same same token, I can see it being reeeeeaaaally tedious to have to try to make 11 basically similiar days interesting, and I am excited for the party.

I love interpersonal interactions and I am not ashamed. I would play the next 11 days in excruciating detail, if I could.

Magic lessons with Sylvie are a "whenever Reinhold feels like it and Sylvie has the time" thing as opposed to a firm routine. As such, everything involving them is considered as an optional thing.

Your options:

>get good at casting a spell

>start to learn a third spell
>just get started in learning how to hold two spells at once

The Alsiradna thing sounds like we might just read it for leisure for a long time. When we don't have anything better to do - it's not that important. Besides, we can keep the princess and Sylvie updated on how far we are, which is a nice ice-breaker.

Here's a thing I wrote up about the magic system like five years ago and then forgot about until yesterday.

In theory, magic can be used by anything which possesses a soul. Though this is the only flat-out requirement to use magic, spells can only be invoked by those who have learned how to conceptualize "script."

This requires a fair amount of meditation and is fairly difficult for most people, though there are those who have a natural talent for it. Because of this, the earliest mages were monks, sages and the like- people who strived to expand their minds beyond the basic human existence.

Despite the initial difficulty, it's fairly easy to conceptualize after learning how. The next step is spellcasting, usually done by vocalizing a spell and then invoking its name. The common format is [incantation] [spell name] format, though this has been known to vary with the more advanced mages.

Incantations are generally direct, the usual form being a command given which describes what is to be done in some way.

Ex: "Dancing wisps, gather before me and light my path."
>>
>>27964061
>start to learn a third spell
>get good at casting a spell
>practice drawing
>just get started in learning how to hold two spells at once
>>
>>27964260
The basic format was adopted out of standardization, as the Script formed is not based on what is said, but rather on the thoughts of the caster. Certain words and phrases invoke the same thoughts in most people with some exceptions due to phobias, strong likes/dislikes, or life experiences. Due to this, spells cast by different people will have some slight variations even if the incantation itself is the same.

Because of this, magic teachers will try to indoctrinate their students into the same mode of thinking as they do- less chance of an unpleasant variation in effect if they have the same basic outlook.

In organization such as churches or some militaries, spells have been known to take the form of prayers or other sayings which have a strong mental image for those in the group, but may come off as merely a motto to an outsider. Even if someone from outside memorizes it, the effect is not duplicated.

An unfortunate conseqence of this is that spellbooks containing the knowledge left behind by past mages often are of no use to anyone, as many of the greatest mages were quite eccentric and had entirely different modes of thinking than present-day people.
>>
>>27964245
Bleh, sorry if I wasn't specific.

The first two "get good at a spell" votes specify getting good at a new spell.
The third "start to learn a third spell" would go after the two new spells that you learned.

As in, you learned and got decent at casting two new spells, and just started learning a third new one a day or so ago.

None of our currently learned spells have a lot of practical utility. And there's no sense doing two impractical spells at once, either. So that's all three other options gone.

So sparkle shine and the water spell can look different?

If the second part is true, then we're thinking in the same mode or way that Sylvie and Arnaud have been thinking. Would spells work differ in power, shape, size, ect. depending on emotion then?

I think the incantation focused our thoughts, and maes it so the intent of the spell is hard to be misinterpreted.
Though, that does mean that the function of the spell cast is entirely dependent on the caster's strength of will and the power of his imagination. I think it's safe to say that we definitely are not lacking in the former.

Honestly, even a small increase in speed would be useful if we're outnumbered.

And the odds are good most of what we're going to encounter in Marconetti are fucktarded duel requests in which we won't be able to use magic anyway.
>>
>>27964552
The real trick is learning how to use those "worthless" spells effectively.

Throw a water orb at someone's head, it'll surprise them at the least.
>>
Illuminate
Cost:2MP
Effect: Forms a single orb of light, lasting for about an hour. The orb can be directed on a specific place or as an independently-floating light source that follows the user. Commonly used to light homes.

Enshroud
Cost: 2MP
Effect: Cuts out one light source. Fires will still burn but show no light, etc. Any basic light-element spell targeted by this will be dispelled entirely. Very difficult to use on a moving target.

Tailwind
Cost: 3MP
Effect: Aided by the wind, the caster's speed increases a great deal. The spell remains in effect until the caster stops moving. Is more effective in combination with a flying spell, though it works just fine on land. There is a rather large learning curve, as maneuvering becomes a fair bit more difficult.

Fireball
Cost: 3MP
Effect: An orb of fire is launched at the target, exploding on impact. Considered to be one of the most basic attack spells.

Arctic Blade
Cost: 3MP
Effect: With the swing of an object, be it a sword, staff or arm, a sharp wave of ice is formed from its arc. This wave travels towards the target, cutting in as if a sword, and explodes into large crystals of ice upon stopping.

>>
Clay Spread
Cost: 2MP (base: 3MP)
Effect: Forms and shoots six fist-sized clay projectiles at a target. Provided that it's a direct hit, the clay sticks to the target. Intended to subdue the target without injuring them.

Uprise
Cost: 3MP (base: 4MP)
Effect: The user gestures, usually with a stomp or lifted hand, causing a rock formation to rise from the ground. The base radius is about five feet, though both the maximum distance and the ground area affected scale with the user's base magical reserves. Can only be used outdoors, or in an area with stone floors.

Shard Breaker
Cost: 3MP (base: 4MP)
Effect: Forms a fist-sized crystal which then shatters, its shards firing at the target.

Refresh
Cost: 2MP
Incantation: "Gentle wind, bring rest to this weary traveler."
Effect: A soft breeze blows over the target, healing all minor cuts and scrapes.

Sandy Step
Cost: 2MP (base: 3MP)
Effect: Changes the ground under the target into loose sand. The range increases with the user's skill, and the spell's accuracy increases the closer the target area is to the caster. Can only be used outdoors or in areas with stone flooring.

Holy Shine
Cost: 4MP
Effect: A shield of light appears in front of the user for an instant, dissipating when struck with enough force. Its strength depends on the caster's skill level, ranging from the durability of paper to about as strong as thick wooden door.

Sparkle Shine can vary in color depending on who casts it. Aqua Suspend's variant would depend on what the user thinks of as "normal" water. Differences in hardness or the like are about as far as that goes.

>If the second part is true, then we're thinking in the same mode or way that Sylvie and Arnaud have been thinking. Would spells work differ in power, shape, size, ect. depending on emotion then?
Entirely possible, though there are general limits to that.

>I think the incantation focused our thoughts, and maes it so the intent of the spell is hard to be misinterpreted. Though, that does mean that the function of the spell cast is entirely dependent on the caster's strength of will and the power of his imagination.
Exactly.

>>27964385
because of
>>27964407
this. While it's entirely possible to do the Conceptualization stage without saying a word, it's harder to get the mental image that's necessary for casting. Invoking a spell requires the caster to actually speak, though.
>>
>>27964728
Remember what Sylvie taught us, earth defensive spells can create deadly deadly shrapnel if struck with sufficient force.

Also it's the fact that it can only be used outdoors or in contact with a stone floor might bite us in the ass.
>>
>>27964592
>>27964623
Arctic Blade would give us a nice powerful combat spell, for when we need a strong swrodmage move, and unlike the other combat spells, it works with out style well.

And Refresh has too much utility to ignore, and could be essential some time.

So I vote those two. Holy Shine is also kind of nice, but it's only in front of the user, and as a skilled swordsman we can just parry. If we could make it appear in front of the princess that would be different. Tailwind is a good idea, but I think not yet - it takes mastering, so it'll be almost useless if we need to duel or something at the ball.
The rest are really just utility spells, of little use to us (Illuminate, Enshroud)or combat gimmicks (everything else).

Bear in mind, the idea that we could use these spells even remotely effectively is so far in the future that it's pointless to consider their potential now. Even slowing someone down for a minute is way better than giving us and only us a speed boost.

Plus, Earth is our element, we get a bonus from that.

So how does spellcasting work mechanically?

Like, if we failed a defense/parry roll could we cast Holy Shine to not get hit or would we have to cast/roll for Holy Shine separately?

>Refresh
We're a bodyguard
>>
>>27964834
Uh, it might help us so much actually

Notice that Tailwind is only 3 MP? That's quite a savings if we save 1 MP every time. Especially if we have to run far distances more than one time.

>>27964892
Holy Shine only applies to us.
>>
>>27964892

Marie already KNOWS refresh. As well as a dozen water spells we don't know about. Our job is to protect and gtfo, not play doctor.
>>
I honestly don't get why more people didn't vote for Clay Spread. That is really damn useful, especially if we were attacked by a group. Subdue one guy and take on the other that's still standing.
>>

Well, good point.

I vote Tail Wind and Arctic Blade, then.

you guys aren't forgetting the princess can already cast refresh and a really strong ice spell, right?

Especially considering we've killed ZERO people in this quest so far, and will probably not kill anyone in the foreseeable future without causing an international incident

But we've COMPLETELY KNOCKED OUT like five people. In our first week of bodyguarding.

We won't USE something like Arctic blade. We'll use the "Shut up an sit your ass down" spell ALL OF THE TIME. Someone convince me that we won't.

She's a squishy wizard. She needs a tank.
>>
>>27964953
I don't see how the 'shut up and sit your ass down' spell would suddenly not be applicable there.

Do we want to start suddenly fighting over the princess in a life or death situation? Of course not. We want to buy time and get away from the threat. Not get in a dick measuring contest.

Which is what the arctic blade spell is: an icy dick measuring spell.
>>
>>27964961
By my count we get Tailwind and Holy Shine

So those are good spells in their own merit that we would use all of the time, so it's okay then. We just have to remember it for later because with our affinity, Clay Spread is 1 MP cheaper to cast than Tail Wind.
>>
>>27964953
Then killing them would probably be acceptable, but taking them alive would still likely be more useful in most cases.
>>
>>27964991
Clay Spread should definitely be learned at a future date.
>>
>>27964977
>We want to buy time and get away from the threat. Not get in a dick measuring contest.

... Or do we?
>>
>>27964991
I don't really see what we'd use Holy Shine for, since it only defends the caster.
>>
>>27964991
If archelon was a bit clearer we would have learned that spell as well instead of two spells.
>>
>>27964933
She's a pure mage in combat as far as we know, if she runs out of MP she's dead weight, and if someone is fast enough to attack her before she can get a spell off to defend herself with she's just dead.

Don't mistake offensive capacity for survival ability.
>>
THE WINNARS:

>Tailwind
>Cost: 3MP
>Effect: Aided by the wind, the caster's speed increases a great deal. The spell remains in effect until the caster stops moving. Is more effective in combination with a flying spell, though it works just fine on land. There is a rather large learning curve, as maneuvering becomes a fair bit more difficult.

>Holy Shine
>Cost: 4MP
>Effect: A shield of light appears in front of the user for an instant, dissipating when struck with enough force. Its strength depends on the caster's skill level, ranging from the durability of paper to about as strong as a thick wooden door

Time to do a writeup of the timeskip now, though I'm going to skip the Alsiradna book until later since that's going to take me all night to write up if I tried.

Tailwind and Sandy Step/Clay Spread

Both of these seem useful in several different situations, and Also seem like they could be used together pretty well.
>>
>>27965121
So we know two new spells that we're competent at and a third spell we just learned?

What's the third spell?
>>
>>27965090
what happens if we're seperated for some reason?you can't say 'it won't happen' because it's a possible thing, I would have preferred some kind of attack spell myself, because a body guard who can't end a threat isn't doing all that much good.

Remember folks, a body guard has to be lucky every time, an assassin only has to be lucky once, so the more opportunities we give one by not taking them out and instead only guarding, the more likely the princess is to get hurt.
>>
>>27965142
We didn't pick to learn a third spell.
>>
>>27965151
Oh, I thought we had enough votes for that

Actually I don't know what the other two options that won were. Reading the two books?
>>
>>27965157
Marie's book is being read for sure considering Archelon's previous post. I think practicing drawing or double casting may be the other one that won.
>>
>>27964812
Sylvie's personal variant, Jewel Breaker, pretty much turns them into exploding funnels.
Though the nature of the spell prevents it from being shaped, it's entirely possible for Reinhold to create a variant that fires iron fragments that were the size of swords if be ever got that proficient in magic.

>>27964851
Depends on the situation. If you saw the hit coming from far enough away, you could cast Holy Shine after a failed dodge roll. He still needs to be able to actually say out the entire spell beforehand.

not that there's anything wrong with that, I just thought you should be aware if anyone had illusions about being the next Sir Vincent.
>>
>>27965145

There's nothing wrong with our current spells though. Tailwind can be both an offensive and a defensive spell, and it's ultimately utility. I actually think Holy Shine can be the same as well, but it's definitely more defensive than offensive.

Depending on if we can use it while attacking, or holding it while attacking or defending, it's pretty good if we need another option other than our own sword. I feel Holy Shine may be outdone by a shield, but considering that we don't fight with a shield, it definitely lightens up our load and having Tailwind is probably the best spell since we'd probably focus more on dodging more than anything.

Though, I do wonder if we can make the shield of light really bright... like, extremely bright.

The next ten days go by smoothly.

While you didn't really do anything that would make the Princess like you any more than she already does, you also managed not to piss her off at all.

You're also quite grateful that you didn't end up accidentally groping her again.

As far as your basic routine, things went by without incident. As your trip to Marconetti grew closer, Sir Gregory's lectures started to lean more and more into how much he absolutely despises the nobility of that kingdom and wishes that he wasn't forced to come along.

Pauline's ballroom dancing class also went well, with you pretty much being able to dance without messing up at all, though you're no DANCE MASTER or anything. Pauline is quite pleased with your progress, and the Princess complains a bit less about having to dance with you now.

As for the etiquette lectures... they are as mindnumblingly boring as ever, though you still manage to force yourself to pay attention. Most of the time. And much to Marianne's delight, she was able to have her foreign literature class a few times as well, during which you finally finished off the book that she lent you. She's offered to lend you another in that same series of slightly fictionalized biographies of the Old Kings, but you've yet to take her up on her offer.

Marianne also got a letter from Luciana... apparently, she told her father about you and he was so amused by however she described you that he actually went so far as to hold his own swordmanship tournament in Marconetti. The tournament had yet to end as of the time that Luciana wrote the letter, but she did say that Takamaru had managed to make it to the semifinals.

Your off time ended up being more exhausting than your actual job of being the Princess's bodyguard, with Arnaud taking your request to show you how to be a better swordsman -quite- seriously.

In addition to the basic training drills that you were expecting, he was successful at beating a few more advanced fighting skills into you: casting a spell while defending against an opponent, and holding a spell while defending. Though the way that he explained it sounded fancy, your training drills pretty much devolved into Arnaud hitting you with a flurry of practice sword blows while you desperately tried to cast Sparkle Shine. And then when you finally managed to get that right, he beat on you some more until you were able to successfully cast and then maintain Aqua Suspend for more than three minutes at a time.

He's told you that the next step is to cast a spell while on the offensive, though you're rather dreading whatever his method of teaching that is. With the knowledge that Sir Gregory also went through this training regimen when he was your age, you're getting a pretty good idea as to why he's in such a foul mood most of the time.

You were also able to get more than a few magic lessons in with Sylvie, who was more than happy to teach you some new spells. The first you learned was Tailwind, which increases your running speed a great deal for as long as you keep moving. The first time you cast it in the training hall, you ended up tripping over your own feet. After several more times of getting used to your legs moving THAT DAMNED FAST, you actually managed -not- to fall over... but you weren't able to decelerate before running face-first into a wall.

Thankfully, Sylvie was right there to use Healing Grace on you.

Currently, you're able to safely run for a good distance, not tripping over yourself and also managing to -almost- be able to stop when you want to. While running in anything other than a straight line while using it is still a little bit beyond you, you're at least able to use it with a reasonable amount of reliability.

The second new spell that you learned is Holy Shine, which Sylvie taught you when you asked for something that would be useful in defending the Princess. After learning the incantation, you asked Sylvie to test out its strength... which she did by punching right through the thing and hitting you right in the stomach.

On that day, you learned that she truly is Sir Vincent's daughter.

Having trained with that spell repeatedly every day, you've managed to increase its strength to around that of a plank of wood... though this still isn't quite satisfactory, you're at least pleased that it'll be of some utility should you need to cast it.

The rest of your free time was spent drawing. The scenery outside your window, random maids as they cleaned up, Melanie that one time... you've finally gotten a hang of drawing as a whole, and you're starting to see some real improvement in your skill!

Got bored one day after seeing Marianne off and ran into Melanie in the hallway as she was talking to another maid, then sketched a quick picture because why not.

Reinhold ended up drawing a crowd as other maids who were passing by realized what he was doing, and Melanie freaked out a little when she finally noticed.

Then Reinhold's sketchbook was passed around among the maids and there was much embarassment to be had.

Having woken up early, you stop by your desk and flip through your sketchbook... you've been drawing so much lately that the entire thing's actually been filled. And with the other one containing your copy of Gerhard's map, you're actually out of things to draw in... but it's not like you'll be doing much of that today.

Dropping it back on your desk, you quickly get bathed and then put on the casual clothes that you bought when you had a day off last week. Marianne said that the two of you were going to be going into town today, and you'd rather not draw too much attention to either of you while out there.

After fastening your sword to your belt, you do a quick stretch and wonder how you should start the day...

Come to think of it, Niklaus did tell you that he wanted your help with something... and you haven't actually bothered to go see him in almost two weeks. Feeling more than a little bit guilty, you open your door.

And THEN you remember that Gerhard told you that you really should burn that copy of the castle's map that you made. You head to your desk and open its drawer... fortunately it's still there, completely untouched! You then grab it and head out, deciding to find something to burn it with as you go.

It isn't long before you make it to Niklaus's study, though you do get a foreboding chill as you approach the door. But you press through anyways, opening it and walking inside.

His study is as strange as it was the last time you were here, with papers strewn about and an entire shelf filled with various live specimens of mice, rabbits and other small animals, all with large crystal growths on them. While they're all still alive and moving about, it just doesn't seem... right.

"Reinhart!" Niklaus shouts cheerfully as he drops down from the ceiling right in front of you.

"H-hey, Niklaus," you say, jumping back a little out of reflex. "Uh, want to set something on fire?" you say as you show him the sketchbook that you copied Gerhard's map in.
"Hm? Sure, that's always fun," Niklaus replies, taking the book from you and tossing it in the air.

"Burn it up," he says as Script forms in the air around the book and immediately vanishes in a ball of flame that consumes it entirely.

"Wow," you say, watching the charred ash that was once a sketchbook rain down onto the floor.
"So, was book disposal the only thing you came here for?" Niklaus asks as he wipes off his glasses.
"I actually came here to see what you wanted my help with... sorry for taking so long to show up," you say guiltily.

Niklaus then puts his glasses back on and starts laughing.

"Aah, you actually remembered that!" he says cheerily. "Most people who I ask to assist in my endeavors just say 'sure whatever' and then go on about their business... but you, you're a genuinely nice guy!"
"Um... thanks?" you reply.
"Aaaaanywho, I wanted to show off a bit of my research..." he says as he grabs your upper arm and pulls you along as he walks. "I've hit a bit of a snag with my research of the parasitic type of crystalline lifeform... Regardless of what I do, the sheer intensity of the magical energy that humans contain burns them out entirely."

You then shake free of Niklaus's grip.

"...you're not trying to try putting one of those things on me, are you?" you ask, slowly backling away.
"Hm? No, why would I do someting that stupid?" Niklaus asks. "If I wanted a human test subject, I have one right here," he says, pointing his thumb at himself.

"...seriously?" you say, staring at him as if he's nuts.
"Meh," Niklaus shrugs. "It flat-out doesn't work anyways, and even if it did, I can always cut off the arm that gets infested and grow a new one."
"G- grow a... what?"
"Regeneration's a simple matter... anyways, I'm not able to figure out just how to recreate 'Gran'... so I've turned my sights to the independent type."

Niklaus then reaches onto a shelf and pulls out a cube of metal that's covered in crystals.

"I've figured out how to limit their growth to a specific object, and now I'm trying to get them to react to human thought," Niklaus says. "Take a look at this."

He then holds out the crystal-covered cube towards you, and it changes to a perfect sphere.

"Pretty cool, right?" he says with a wide grin. "I can only manage basic shapes, but this has promise for what I have in mind... but I still haven't been able to get anyone else to test it out."
"Uh, if it works the way you wanted, then why would you..." you ask.
"Because I need to test whether it's reacting to the thoughts of -humans-, or just -me-. Because I'm awesome like that."

He then takes a close look at the newly-formed sphere, and then hands it to you.

"So, you want to try and see if it reacts to you?" he asks.

You try and do what Niklaus says, thinking "at" the metal sphere in your hand to form a shape... but what shape?

As if there was any question.

You try and "order" it to form a sword, concentrating as hard as you can. It doesn't seem as if it's going to work, but then the sphere starts to ripple...

...and slowly extends into a cylindrical shape, with one end forming somewhat of a point. You try and think at it harder to become more swordlike... but that seems to be the best that you can manage.

"W... wow..." you say in awe as you look at the oddly-shaped piece of metal that rests in your palm.
"OH WOW THIS IS JUST HOLY CRAP I AM SO INCREDIBLY BEST AT EVERYTHING HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA" Niklaus laughs maniacally as he dances a crazy man's dance. "Oh... oh wow..." Niklaus says as he bends down and tries to regain his composure. "Thanks, man. You have no freaking idea how much this helps me out."
"No problem," you reply.
"Well, the base model works..." he says, reforming the piece of metal into its original crystal-covered cube form and placing it back on the petri dish. "You wanna help out with phase two?"

...phase -two-?

"Depends on what that means," you reply.
"It's nothing big..." Niklaus says, rummaging through another drawer and pulling out a plain-looking bracelet. "I want to get some dormant crystals to infest this bracelet here, and then I'll have you wear it for a while and charge it with your own personal energy. Provided that it works as it should, you should be able to manipulate it within the day or so, just in time for you to leave for Marconetti."

"Just play with it whenever, and tell me how well you're able to manipulate it when you get back," Niklaus says as he spins the bracelet around with his finger. "So, how about it?"

"Sure, why not," you say, shrugging. "...but wearing this thing isn't going to screw me over while i'm in the middle of some important event, will it?"
"Hm? Of course not!" Niklaus replies happily. "It shouldn't even move unless you will it to, so there shouldn't be any problems."

Before you can say anything else, Niklaus runs off into another part of his study. You find yourself waiting for -quite- a while before he finally comes back.

"Aaaalright, here you go!" Niklaus says, handing you the bracelet which is now covered in a fine sand-like later of clear crystals. "Just put that on and tell me how it is when you get back!"
"Uh... okay..." you say as you do as he says.
"Hahaha, great!" he says, grabbing the arm that you put the bracelet on and holding it up in the air. "From this day forth, you shall be lab assistant THE SECOND!"

"Uh..." you say, breaking free of his grip, "what happened to 'lab assistant the first?'"
"Hm? Oh, that's the adorable young miss Melanin." Niklaus replies. "Alas, my feelings towards her are onesided... but she still helps me out whenever I ask, she's like a bespectacled angel..."
"...huh," you reply, kind of surprised that Niklaus is even capable of having romantic interest in an actual person.
"Glasses maid... such a shame that she'll never be mine..."

With nothing else that you really planned on doing this morning, you head down to the dining hall to wait for the Princess. Taking your post beside the entrance, you take a look at the bracelet that Niklaus gave you... it seems like this will be harmless, but you're REALLY hoping that this doesn't result in your arm getting devoured by a crystalline monster.

You lose track of time as you spin the bracelet around your arm, doing so until you hear the sound of maids chattering and footsteps approaching. Turning to face them, you're once again met with the sight of Princess Marianne, who is dressed quite differently from usual. She's wearing a somewhat plain-looking dress with a matching shawl, and has her hair done up in a braided ponytail.

"Good morning," she says to you. "I see that you've actually managed to dress properly this time."
