The warmth of the rising sun rouses you from your sleep, energizing you and forming a stark contrast to the cold stone of the alley you call home. You yawn and stretch to prepare for the day, the creeping sunlight playing across your scales as you uncoil and wiggle your tail to get all the kinks out. For as far as you can remember, you have spent most of your twelve years of life on the streets of this city. It’s not all bad, though. You can usually scrounge and beg for enough scraps to get by and a few weeks back you even met a stray kitten who has quickly become your best and only friend. You still have a few things from your life before the city - vague memories of warm sands and your mother’s embrace, an old flute that used to be your mother’s, and most importantly: your name.

You are Shaana, a homeless lamia child in the city of Kurest, you have nothing to your name but your flute and the tattered clothes on your back, you haven’t eaten in two days, and you are very hungry. What do you do?

[] Beg for some copper out on the street near your alley. There may not be many people there, but they know you better and may be more willing to give you coin than anyone else!

[] Perform for money. Folks are much more willing to part with their money if they have been entertained!

[] See if you can’t swipe some food or coin from an inattentive street vendor. It may not be the nicest thing to do, but you’ll starve if you go too long without food!

[] Beg, perform, or steal at the market square. More people means more money, more food, and more chances to not get caught!

We flute quest now

Fuck, OP, now you reminded me. In my 3.5 (I know, I know) game that I'm part of, we decided that a certain set of pan-flutes would be our party icon. The holder of the pan-flutes since died, and as far as I know, they are still on his body where we left it (I FUCKING KNOW, we need to bury it). Thanks for reminding me, I've gotta make a trip to go get them now.

You decide that putting on a show will likely loosen pursestrings before an outstretched hand. Besides, you always feel better when you earn your money rather than begging for it. You gather the things youll need for your performance – a battered old basket whose bottom has rotted out, the patchy blanket you use to try and keep the coldness of the stone at bay, your flute, and Fuzztail, your new best friend. You drag the bucket and blanket out of the alleyway and onto the main street in order to get more passersby while Fuzztail rides on your tail. Once you find a good spot that’s both populated enough to earn you money and out of the way enough so as not to invite ire from those who don’t like your kind, you begin to set up. You flip the bucket over so that the rotted out bottom points skyward and drape the blanket over it so that it trails towards you. Using a little bit of mud, you paint a crude face on the tip of your tail and snake it under the blanket and into the blanket. Finally set up, you put your flute to your lips and play a melody that reminds you of warm sands and pleasant dreams from a far away life.

As you play your song, you dance and wiggle the tip of your tail so that it looks as though a snake is rising from the bucket and dancing to the melody. You don’t think it actually fools anyone, but some folk usually find the effort worth a copper or two.

Unfortunately, you don’t seem to be meeting any of those folks today. Most everyone just passes you by without so much as a glance in your direction and the few that do acknowledge you just hurry by faster and try to avoid your gaze. All you got for a whole morning of playing was a single copper from a man who practically threw it at your face as he rushed by. You know that humans in this city weren’t that fond of lamias, but they’re not usually this bad. They all seem to be headed in the same direction, too, the town square to be exact. Is something going on today? No one ever tells you anything, so you wouldn’t know. What do you do now?

[] Check out the town square. Maybe you can get more from all the people there.

[] Give up and go to the market. One copper won’t fill your belly, but maybe you can make a deal with one of the vendors.

[] Keep playing. Things are bound to turn around eventually.

Where there’s people, there’s money and when there’s money, there’s food! Gathering your things, you head to the town square, hoping that whatever spectacle going on there has room enough for you to earn some coin off of it. The last time everyone gathered at the town square it was for a hanging and that just left you feeling sick and scared and everyone else feeling stingy.

You really hope it isn’t another hanging.

By the time you slither over there, the crowd is too thick to see through and whatever it was had yet to take the stage at the center of the square, so you can’t tell what’s going on. Whatever it was, though, it seems to have grabbed everyone’s attention. Nobody is listening to your music at all! Sighing, you take a look on the fringe of the crowd to see if you can figure it out on your own. On the outskirts, you recognize of the other homeless of the town, apparently having the same idea as you.

Laurentius the Lame, a veteran of the last Great War, his left leg has grown twisted and black from a magical injury he sustained. He could always find someone to give him a meal and a drink to repay him for his service to the throne. Or so they don’t have to look at his blighted leg anymore. He seems particularly happy today.

There’s also Mickey the Drunken Minotaur, the only other demihuman you know of in Kurest. He was another veteran of that same war, but you’re pretty sure he fought for the other side since most people don’t like him. However, he is still strong enough to fight off any would be assaulters and can do hard labor nobody else wants to for some extra coin. He probably wouldn’t be homeless if he didn’t spend it all at the taverns. Being a fellow demihuman, he was usually pretty nice to you and even scared off bullies or bought a meal for you from time to time. Even from this distance, you could swear that you spot uncharacteristic tears rolling down his massive furry head.

The last noteworthy beggar is someone you’ve never seen before. He’s wearing rags so dirty that moss appears to be growing on them. Even from this distance he smells foreign. Rather than the cold, muddy streets of Kurest, he stinks of hot rains and too much trees. He seems to have secured himself a meal, for a bowl of wine sits next to his crossed legs as he tears into some dried meat.

What do you do?

[] Go talk to Laurentius. Happy people tend to share their coin more than sad people.

[] Go talk to Mickey. If he is crying, then something REALLY scary must be happening.

[] Go talk to the mossy man. Not only does he have food, but new beggars don’t just up and appear out of thin air like that.

[] Ignore them all and try to maneuver your way to the front of the crowd.

You decide to make your way over to Mickey. Laurentius doesn’t much care for your kind and sad sort-of friend is better company than a happy mean old man. Besides, someone as tall as him MUST know what’s going on. Thankfully the crowd is thin as you hug the edge of the town square (you HATE it when they always step on your tail!), so you have little trouble getting over to him. Unfortunately, you do have to pass by the strange smelling moss man. Your stomach grumbles at the sight and scent of the meat he is eating so voraciously and though he acts drunk, you catch his eyes following you as you pass. You hug Fuzztail a little tighter and slink past him quickly. You feel at least a little safer once you reach the massive buffer zone of emptiness that always surrounds Mickey.

At eight and a half feet tall, Mickey is big even in the company of other minotaurs, not that he has had any such company in years. Various battlescars adorn his body and show through his fur, including one of his horns broken near the base and three fingers missing on his right hand. You understand that he used to be someone important during the war, which is probably why he still tries to fight whenever he gets the chance. Whatever he is staring at in the distance must be pretty important, because he doesn’t even notice you approach him. It takes you tugging on his pants to finally get his attention.

"Shar Kathis, Mickey!" You're not sure what the words mean, but you remember mother telling you to always greet other demihumans with them. "Mind giving me and Fuzztail here a bullyback ride?" You show off your new cat, still proud of your ability to make new friends like him.

He is slow to regard you, his big eyes shiny with freshly shed tears. As he looks at you, another one rolls down his snout and plops right onto your cheek.

"Shar Kathis?" He laughs a bitter laugh as he slumps unceremoniously to the ground. "Do you even know what those words mean, little one?" He stares dead into your eyes. He has always been a bit bitter – you guess it’s because his side lost the war – but this is the first time you can ever remember him looking so…defeated. "We have no more Kathis, Shaana. No kin, no fathers, no gods. It’s all broken, sundered just as the earth was so many years ago. And now, the vultures have come to grind what remains of our people to dust. We…lost, Shaana. And now we are the lost."

He leans over close to you and puts a massive hand on your shoulder. It kind of hurts, but you can tell he is holding back. "I want you to understand Shaana – I NEED you to understand – we never meant for things to turn out this way. I don’t know what went wrong, but the Sundering and the Earthscar, they weren’t supposed to happen. We were just trying to secure our future, give a place our children could live in safety and call home." He stared far into the distance at nothing in particular. "But now it is our children who shall pay for our sins. I'm so, so sorry, little one, I have no right to be considered Kathis to the likes of you."

You're…not sure you understood all of that, but you feel really sick now. Even worse than the hanging. What now?

You gingerly clutch Mickey’s hand and give it a tentative squeeze.

"What’s wrong, Mickey? Does it have something to do with what’s at the center of the square? " You give his hand another encouraging squeeze. "If you talk about it, maybe you’ll feel better!"

The big oxman looks over at you and shakes his massive shaggy head with a chuckle.

"Such innocence. A shame I am about to destroy it." He sits up straight and stretches his arm out towards you, holding it stiff. "Come, little one, up we go."

You climb his arm like you would a tree, slithering around it until you reach his shoulders. From there you rest your head on top of his own flat head and grab his horns for leverage while the rest of your tail wraps around his broad chest to keep you in place. You never do get used to the lurch in your stomach as you rise so high above the ground. Your tail constricts tightly around Mickey for a brief moment as your instincts to find solid ground take hold, but you loosen back up a moment later as you catch yourself. At the center of the massive throng of people, you can see the lord of the city (Or was it Mayor? Duke? King? You don’t really keep track of that sort of thing) talking to three people you’ve never seen before. Two are wearing some of the most brilliant silvery armor you had ever seen. A white cloth was draped down the chest, bearing a symbol of a yellow sun outlined in red with similarly red rays radiating out from it. The bottommost ray was replaced by a sword that struck outwards from the center of the sun, its blade also bathed in bright crimson flames. The third one wore elegant robes adorned with several pouches. He wore a strange, rounded cap on his head and held tightly onto one of the most intricate walking sticks you had ever seen. Despite him standing in the same mud as everyone else, his clothes never seemed to get dirty.

"You see those men in the armor?"

"I want you to listen closely Shaana, for your life depends on it. NEVER get near those men. If you see them, run in the other direction. Hide and never come out until you’re absolutely sure they’re gone, no matter how hungry you get. Do the same thing for anyone who gets too friendly for them." You feel something heavy and jingling get plunked down on your head. You reach up to find a coinpurse, heavy and full. "That’s all the money I have. I want you to take it. I don’t need it anymore and it’s the least I can do for burdening your life like this."

"Why? What do you mean?"

"Because by the end of this week, I’ll be dead."

You hug his head close and accidentally squeeze him again.

"What?!"

He untangles you and sets you down on the ground.

"It’s about the war. Don’t trouble yourself over it, little one, this fate was a long time coming. I can’t say that I don’t deserve it, but I fear they may blame you as well. Now I want you take that money and buy yourself some food before word spreads about the newcomers." Her reaches down and ruffles your hair. "Buy yourself something sweet, too, you never know how much longer you have in this world. Khrosh only knows what I would give to eat some of my mother’s homemade pies one last time…"

As the depressed minotaur lumbers off, you inspect the purse to find yourself in the possession of a hefty sum of silver and even some gold! You could live for weeks, maybe months off this stuff! But, you also find yourself lacking the one friend you had in this city, possibly forever if he is to be believed. What do you do?

[] Listen to Mickey and get yourself some food. Maybe a pie, too. In honor of the Big Bull himself.

You clutch the coin purse close to you, as if it will somehow make everything better again. Your stomach grumbles more insistently, reminding you that it can make at least some things better. You hurry off to the markets, reassuring Fuzztail that everything is gonna be okay. It’s easy enough to find food at the market. Despite all the enticing aromas, you decide to be responsible and settle for some simple stew for now, settling down in an empty alley not too dissimilar from your home and chowing down alongside Fuzztail. It’s cheap, hot, and you can buy lots of it, which is a good thing, since nothing in this city properly portioned for lamias. Besides, if you eat cheap, you may be able to spend some of your money on brand new clothes for once! And a warm bed! Or secondhand clothes and a new blanket, at least. However, as you’re going to leave, the smell of blueberry pie wafts through the air. The last time you had pie was when Mickey "persuaded" the baker to give you one for your tenth birthday.

You decide to honor Mickey’s last words to you and live for the day. That pie shall be yours! You slither and twist your way through crowded streets until you make your way to the baker’s. As you approach, you notice the baker talking to one of those Sun Knights! You duck behind a nearby stall and take another look. You can’t tell what they’re discussing from here, but you can see the blueberry pie sitting outside the front of his shop on his stand, wafting its tantalizing odor your way. It’s close enough to you that you could probably grab it without them noticing, or you could wait until he is done talking to the Knight. What’s the plan, Shaana?

[] Try to nab the pie and leave a silver coin. It’s not stealing if you pay, right?

You can’t spend your whole life running away, especially when you don’t even know what you’re running from! Or have any legs! You put Fuzztail down and tell him to stay put by the stall since he has the tendency to mewl at the most inconvenient times and slither to a better vantage point making sure to keep yourself and your tail hidden – an undertaking in and of itself. It’s not too long before your pointed ears pick up their conversation already in progress.

"-karion, huh? Them beasties always did have funny names. Folks round here just call im Mickey."

"Aye, sir. Big Bull Mikarion, they used to call him. Said to be a real terror back in the Sundering Wars. Left nothing but ashes of several villages. Their inhabitants, too."

"Don’t I believe it. Damned cow must be pushing eighty now and he’s still terrorizing us humans. Wrecks me shop whenever he goes and gets too drunk. Wasn’t bad enough his kind went and wrecked the world, but he’s gotta bust up my bakery, too. Never bothers to pay for the damages, either, the damned blightsucker."

"That’s why the Order of Zoastaan is here. Just because you live on the borderlands of this fair kingdom doesn’t mean you don’t have the right to the very same security those in the capitol know. We are also investigating reports of a supposed demihuman witch in the area."

"Aye! The Vermin Hag! Lives in Rat Glade, west of here. Been haunting the damned place since I was but a lad.Think she’s supposed to be one of them scaletails. Speaking of scaletails, there’s a little one of them skulking around this city somewhere."

"She might be closer than you think!" A voice shouts behind you, startling you. A familiar smell of hot rains washes over you as a gauntleted hand lifts off the ground by the scruff of your neck.

You were so engrossed in the conversation that you lost track of your surroundings! The hand keeps hoisting you up until only the tip of your tail can barely brush back and forth on the stone street.
It turns you by your neck until it regards you face to face. Well, face to boxy helmet with only a slit for the eyes to see through.

"Trying to spy on my men, were you?" A big booming voice echoes from the helmet.

Looking down, you see that he’s wearing the same sun symbol as the rest of them, but his armor looks much more intricate, with gold patterns dancing across the silver and outlining it. He also seems to be wearing some sort of cape. Behind him, you can see the raggedy beggar from earlier, though you don’t know what he has to do with any of this. Has he been trailing you for them the entire time? What CAN you do now?

[] Beg them to let you go. You ARE a beggar, after all.

[] Try to pay them off. That IS a lot of money in the purse.

[] Ask them why they’re doing this, you didn’t do anything wrong.

[] Try to use your tail to trip him up and run.

"Not yet ya didn’t, but you was gonna steal me pies again, weren’t ya?"

"Just like you bought one on yer birthday those years back, huh?" He counters with a sneer.

"I have money! I can pay! Just please don’t hurt me!"

"She likely stole that too, yer Excellencies."

You look at the knight with wide, plaintive eyes. "Please…"

"I was just waiting for you to finish talking so I could buy some pie! I didn’t mean to listen in..."

The knight who was talking to the baker looked you hard in the eyes. "Funny, when I have to coin to spend, I typically make my presence known. Skulking about like that, well that just looks suspicious. And where did an urchin such as you get so much coin, anyways?"

"I p-play the flute. Somebody really liked my performance. I can show you, i-if you want me to."

The baker scoffed "That’s more than I make in two months time. Who in this damned shithole of a city is rich enough to throw that kind of coin around? Especially to be wasting it on a halfie like you."

"So you’re telling me," this time, the ragged man spoke up "That on today of all days. The day the new king of these lands sent agents to investigate all known demihuman hideaways to discover and eliminate all remnants of Kathis Kal, demihuman nation and the sole responsible party for the Sundering and the blight this act has brought upon the entire world, somebody just DECIDED to give away their money to you at risk to their own health."

"Bet ya she got paid to spy on you!" the baker contributed.

Ignoring him the ragged man stepped closer to you, making sure your attention was focused solely on him as is face dominated your view. "We having a saying where I come from. Liars," He held his uo close to your face. You yelp and try in vain to move away from it as his hand spontaneously ignites into flame "burn in fires. So let’s try this again, scaletail. You hang limp and silent, tears falling freely down your face.

"Well?" The knight holding you jostles you a bit as he awaits your answer.

"…mcky…" you mumble.

"Speak up, little snake, you of all people can afford to put a little backbone into it." The ragged man quips.

"Mickey!" You shout through your tears. "Mickey gave me the money! He told to me run far away if I ever saw people who looked like you. But I was scared and lonely and cold so I just wanted a little pie. And I wanted to pay for it, too!" You add before the baker has a chance to interject. "I finally had enough money to not be a beggar for a few days, so I wanted to pay for it! I wanted…I wanted to feel like just another person for once…"

The gathering goes silent for a time. By now, the three you saw at the square had joined the rest of the group and were getting caught up on the situation.

"Mickey’s money, huh?" The baker asks quietly.

"Yeah." You confirm, dejected.

"I think this about covers the debt he owes me." He says as he pockets your money. "And you too, for that pie you stole."

You don’t try to object, you just sniffle and try to suppress a sob.

"Are you gonna hurt Mickey?" You finally muster the courage to ask. "He said you were gonna kill him…"
"We have come here to bring him back to the capitol for questioning. He will only come under harm if he resists." This time, the knight holding you seemed almost as if he was trying to be comforting.

"Which probably means he’s as good as dead." The ragged man idly cut in.

"Halfir!" The robed man scolded "Can’t you see this child is in distress?"

The man called Halfir shrugged "She was honest with us, the least we can do is return the favor."

"Please, just don’t hurt him. I know he did bad stuff of the past, but he was always nice to me and did his best to help me." You sniffle again, trying to hold your tears back from starting back up in earnest and failing miserably.

However, Halfir seemed to softer at this. He tugged a worn cloth free from his rags to wipe your face with, but upon noticing that it was in fact dirtier than your face opted to instead use the robed man’s hat, much to his ire. He also hands you the blueberry pie you had been eying. You dig in greedily, seeking what little comfort you can find in its gooey filling.

"Child, child" He soothed as he mopped up your tears. "Of COURSE he would do everything in his power to help you. You and the rest of your kind are his kin, his family. We humans, however, are not. He would kill dozens, if not hundreds of us just to make sure you don’t go to sleep hungry. The fact is he had already done as much before in his life. The simple matter is we are not worth as much to him as you are, and if killing us is the only way to secure your life, he will do it. It’s simple survival, do you understand?"

You gulp your mouthful of pie down hard and nod meekly. Halfir smiled and cleaned up the remaining blueberry from your face before returning the sullied cap to its owner.

"Good. Then you understand why we must do what comes next." He looked past you to the man whose grip on the back of your neck never once slackened. "It’s your show now, Commander."

The commander dragged you to the center of the market street before shouting once more, his voice so loud you briefly wonder if it’s magically enhanced.

"Merchants! Travelers! Countrymen! Pay heed to my words! As you all know, sixty years ago this world was blighted by the Kathis Kal, that foul demihuman cabal! We do not know if they were trying to use their foul magics to create a god or simply summon one, but we do know is that all they succeeded in doing was sundering the earth, creating that foul stain upon our realm known as the Earthscar, from which horrific abominations beyond imagining still pour forth! For sixty years we have endured this nightmare as the new reality, for sixty years we have pushed futilely back against the Scar, built walls around it and fought the horrors that spill from it! And we have prepared to do it for another sixty! I say we have had enough! Your king has said we have had enough! The great god Zoastaan has said we have had enough. That is why he has sent me to cities such as yours, ignored by the king for simple lack of men to aid you, to deliver you from the blightbringers that have plagued our lands for too long! Only once we cleanse ourselves of the infection can we begin to heal the scar they have dealt us. Those remnants of Kathis Kal now roam OUR lands, stalk OUR streets, and eat OUR food, taking and never giving. They call themselves refugees, but we know what they really are: invaders! They stalk your streets and make the roads unsafe! They are the enemy! Mikarion the Murderer is the enemy! The Vermin Hag is the enemy! And most perhaps the most insidious enemy of all, is THIS!" He hoists you up high for all to see. "They seek to not only take our lands, but supplant our cities with their own children! They will not stop until humanity is but a distant memory and only their malformed kind remains! Now, gaze upon the only mercy we can permit the enemy!"

Without warning, you feel something sharp pierce the side of your neck. It glides through your throat until it reaches the other side and is swiftly pulled forward, severing your jugular and tearing out your throat. You cough and splutter for air as he drops you to a crumpled heap on the stone. In your last moment of clarity, you’re amazed at how little it hurts. Rather, you just feel…cold. As you fade away, you dream of warm sands, of dancing and laughing with your mother, and of a kitten purring gently against your chest.

Your name is Halden, and you are a Paladin Initiate of the Order of Zoastaan. When a convent was founded in your hometown, you were eager to join, lulled in by the promises of adventure and bringing good works to the world. You proved yourself skilled with a blade and quick with your invocations to the Blade of Dawn. When the Order requested one from your convent to join the esteemed Templar-Commander Lloyd Esteroc on a Mission of Faith, you were the Father’s first choice. However, your Mission had yet to live up to your expectations. After four days of traveling by rickety caravan while listening to a wild man and a Spire Wizard argue over whose magic was better, you were eager to reach Kurest and begin aiding the people. And now here you are, watching the man you admired slit the throat of a child in the name of the good of humanity and Halfir immolate her corpse under his orders.

But tomorrow would be better. Tomorrow you and your band take on the terror known to the locals as the Vermin Hag. Surely that will do some real good…right?

I want a savegame still. I was really looking forward to hobosnake: the game. I even rememebr pitching that on QTG way back.
>>

I think we're going to play a torn human Paladin Initiate who wants to do good, but ends up becoming torn because all he sees is killing more innocents.

no. I'm not.

Nope.

It's going to be human paladin going renegade to save all the monster girl waifus that are victims of the evil bigots. Because /tg/.
>>
>>27965588

I'm assuming we'll be playing as the rookie.
>>
>>27965588
If you guys want, I can pick up next week at about the same time with Halden and Friends going to slay the Vermin Hag.

And maybe after that I will transplant Shaana into a less grim setting, but that would be a long ways away since I never had any overarching plot planned for her, she was just to introduce you guys to the setting.

Please do a legit hobosnake quest at some point in the future, I really was looking forward to it.

If I do actually do it, it wont be for a while at least. On the bright side, I don't plan on this one going past 15-20 threads as a generous estimate.
>>
>>27965711
well, I've had the personal fantasy of some kind of hobo lamia/naga quest for some time. I had just thought someone had picked up one of my pitches. please
>>
>>27960463

Speaking of 3.5, I had a Bard that was given an awesome set of flutes. They were made of finger bones from humans and dragons. Three times a day, I could use its magic to strike fear into any non-friendly in a radius of 60 feet from me.

Used it during a siege when the town we were in was attacked by a massive hoard of orcs, one of Obuld many-arrows forces. That flute was fucking wicked, would love me one of them for real.

As far as I'm concerned you didn't even make it past 1. And this is coming from someone who doesn't even have a lamia fetish.
>>
>>27965720
>I had just thought someone had picked up one of my pitches
I never once saw your pitch, to be honest. I just thought a lamia hobo would be a fun way to lull /tg/ in.

I like monstergirls just fine. Why else do you think I figured using one would be so effective on /tg/ and had a lamia picture for every post? This is...I don't actually know what it is, but it should be fun to find out together, yeah?

Well. I came in expecting some lighthearted but dark tale about a lamia kid trying to make her way in a world which doesn't like her, but what I got instead was suffering.

Kudos, OP. You had my attention, now you have my interest.
>>
I came to fill the void from no Homeless Mutant Quest on Friday, and to be a homeless lamia scrounging a living. Instead I got Everything Is Sad. Hoping for Legit Homeless Lamia Quest later.
>>
>>27965479
as a matter of fact...
>>
>>27965880

I thought it was a good setup.

Questanons on /tg/ like to be babied far too much, though the danger may be that you'll get an even more cowardly lot, cringing from the thought of Bad Ends and No Waifus.
>>
>>27970120
Except there was no avoiding Bad End here. Folks came to be a homeless lamia and have hijinks ensue as they scrabble to earn enough to eat and avoid freezing to death.
Not get snagged by the Pelor The Burning Hate squadron and have textwordstext to serve as a prologue to the actual quest of being one of them.
If it was that quest from the start, reactions would've been different, and we could have been introduced to the setting without needless levels of So Sad.
>>
>>27970227
I thought it was a nice prologue. I'm a fan of tragic stories, though. *Especially* if they make you feel dead inside.
>>
>>27970227
>Be the kind of society that mercilessly executes a child who knew no life beyond being alone in the streets of the city for the "crime" of not being human
>Be surprised that the non-human races are so desperate to be free of you they'd take desperate measures
Honestly, if this doesn't lead to huge crisis of faith in the new MC as he learns more, the worldbuilding and GM suck.

To each their own. I just think a misleading quest with the intention of going absolutely nowhere beyond ramping up the tragedy levels and then using it as a launch pad to the actual quest where we play a guy involved in the tragedy on the side of the initial antagonists will taint future quests. Instead of drawing the Paladin, "fight evil monsters for humanity and damn all who oppose us" crowd, we had the group for playing pipes and making tail-puppets to buy pie.
>>27965550 said it best for the mood now. We have no emotional investment in this guy, at all.
>>
>>27970354
Yeah, you'd think that Halden would've had any sympathy/empathy drilled out of him during his training. Like, that should be the first class for these guys.
>>
>>27970470
>>27970519
It's a classic bait and switch protagonist. Many a successful story has used the technique, and this is a good example of it. OP used it as a source of exposition, a general indicator of tone, and a method of motivating the actual protagonist, who clearly has some pretty serious disillusionment going on.

And now you get to play the soldier who tries to follow his orders while knowing that somewhere along the way, he might have started being the bad guy.
>>
Damn you, Vagabond.

>>27969539
I'm rejoicing too much over here.

But yeah, you've got my interest.
Expect to see me on most of your threads.
And you know damn well that I'll try to say ''fuck you'' to Halfir when a chance is given.

Let's become the saviours of demihumans once more..
>>
>>27972873
I have but one thing to say to this sentiment: Humanity, Fuck Yeah!
>>
>>27972907
I shall still be that little voice in Halden's head, telling him what really must be done.
>>
>>27973164
Of course. Once the external threats to humanity are fully and forever purged we may finally turn our attention inwards.

Let's be honest here, all the cataclysmic events referenced thus far sound far more likely to have been perpetrated by our own than the demihumans. Still, one scourge at a time.
>>
>>27973526
Or at least it was the actions of the kingdom that lead to the desperation needed to try whatever caused the earthscar.
