Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

You turn your gaze upon the final shard waiting at the Frozen Hand - Wrath. But first, you need to have a conversation with Ellendra Kalladar - the elven Queen that started all this so long ago.

But flying straight to the xenophobic elvish isles could pose many problems. But you know another elf - Valeria Kavanere - leader of those that call the Great Forest home, and members of your growing northern alliance.

Valeria is distant cousins with the elf queen, Kalladar - and they've been in contact. You gained great insight into your own nature, and the nature of the world. It was Queen Kalladar who gave you the ability to resist and deform from Erebus's programming - which was the only thing that stopped his ultimate goal of erasing Chaos. As you've reforged yourself, the burden on the queen has lessened.

But at the same time, Chaos is growing uncontrollably. Magic is getting stronger. Demons grow more powerful. How long can Venia last in a world of god-like titans? It must be brought back under control, or it, too, could consume the world.

Verlia and the queen agree that only Erebus's true might can do the job that must be done. With the future poised on a knife's edge, you traveled to the Palace of Shadow, Erebus's old base. First, you must subdue the final shard, and then set out to the place beyond Venia - from where Erebus originally came.

Your battle with Wrath has torn open the palace and spilled out onto the snow-covered ice of the Frozen Hand.

You blast out of the snow as fast as you can - but the ice makes a poor launching pad. You try to gather your aura behind you for a burst of speed as you move, but Wrath's arm catches up with you first. A titanic fist smashes into your back, and you're sent flying across the drifts. You skip across the snow like a pebble across a pond, eventually coming to a long, sliding halt.

After a moment, you clamber back up, dazed, but alive. Wrath pounds through the snow after you - but he starts to shrink. His size decreases until he's no larger than he was before. Still, he's charging full speed, wings flared to give him an extra boost. It's only a moment before he arrives.

You spread your legs wide, ready to dodge. But as you make your move, your feet falter on a ridge of ice buried under the snow. You flap your wings, which stops your falling, but you don't have enough momentum to get out the way!

Breeze answers your call.

A ring of purple light flashes over either of your wings. Your second flap brings you forward with an incredible speed. It feels less like you've moved, and more as if the world has moved around you. In an instant, you're at Wrath's side.

Wrath, caught off-guard, tries to bring himself around to face you, but now the ice is on your side. His feet slip and stumble as he tries to slow his momentum. He shoots out tentacles of shadow to pierce the ice and drag himself to a halt.

But while he tries to right himself, you have the initiative.

What do you do?

A ball of shadow gathers in front of you, your mana, concentrated into a small point. As if in slow motion, Wrath turns, eyes wide, trying to move. He's not fast enough.

A tiny pinprick of the ball of mana distorts. The concentrated power erupts out of that weak point and straight into Wrath's face. You feel the odd pressure of Shadow on Shadow, but while the resistance usually forces the magic to roll around the target, there's simply not enough room for it to go anywhere. The sheer force of the spell smashes Wrath's upper body backward snow, ripping and tearing in a cyclone of destruction.

A moment later, Wrath sits at the back of a cone-shaped crater driven through the ice. His body, effectively torn in half, is climbing to its feet. He is rapidly regenerating, but that definitely hurt him.

You cast Erode.

A cloud of earth magic surrounds Wrath, fighting his aura - but this time, it seems to overwhelm your magic. You call upon a shard of your power for help.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml0g7q4Kipg

Maker answers that call. And with the passion he forged a tomb fit for kings, Erode is doubled in strength, and then doubled again. The frayed cloud of Earth turns into a fog that sits over Wrath, smothering his aura of strength.

>Maker - Weak

Wrath is on the ropes. He's weakened; he's hurt. The time is now. You throw yourself forward through the blizzard of snow.

What follows is one of the strangest battles you've ever fought. The regenerating Wrath has lost most of his solid form. You create an array of deadly tentacles - fists, sharp-edged swords, points like spears - and so does he. You duel at high speed, arms clashing, points tearing and piercing, fists meeting one another only to warp and Ink around to try and gain some new advantage. It's like fighting a mirror of yourself.

But step by step, you gain the advantage. You take punches, but they're light. His swords cut you, but they're only shallow scratches. His spears and Shadows pierce your body, but only skin deep.

You step forward and drive him back. Eventually, he's pinned to the back of the crater that you made. You drive him into the ice, hammering, slamming him flat against the frozen surface.

Desperate for an escape, Wrath attempts to grapple you - but his strength is no match, at the moment. You use his own grip as leverage to pick him up off the ice, and then you run him through with several limbs combined into one dagger point. You throw him back down. The ice cracks when he hits it. Snow flies up into the air.

Your focus returns. Wrath lies before you in a torn, pooled-up mess. Even now, driven by a singular goal, it tries to pierce itself back together.

What do you do?

Look, we were told we were given a CHOICE to reject the drive to reassemble and become erebus.

What if we trigger some unknowable final plan by reuniting ourselves?

You reforge Wrath.

Humanity's light doesn't seep in or burn like it has with other shards; rather, in a blinding flash, the light shines of Wrath. The aura rolling off its arms and limbs change. Its horns, almost demonic in appearance, recede into its head. Left before you is the shape of a simple man - as with all the shards, they become less alien in appearance and sense when reforged - but this one is particularly...human.

<My anger has cooled,> the shard says, <but not vanished. It still simmers...controlled. Waiting to be unleashed.>

<...what shall I call you?> you ask it.

<Retribution,> it says, <for those that stand in our way shall be haunted by the visage of my old Wrath.>

It slips into your core, and you know you've gained a powerful ally.

>Retribution - Strong

Shards of Order and Chaos:

(Retribution) - Strong
(Maker) - Weak
(Silence) - Normal
(Peace) - Empowered
(Breeze) - Strong
(Hammer) - Strong
(Ardor) - Empowered
{Resolve} - Strong
{Humanity} - Resonant

>Titanic now lasts up to five turns, and can be cancelled at any time.

>Dark Wave - Unleash a mighty shockwave of Shadow centered on you. Low offensive power, but high knockback. (3 or 8 experience, 50 foot or half-mile radius, respectively).

--------
--------

And then you feel something change.

The shards inside you begin to hum. It's as if you're holding something that won't stop vibrating, and the feeling in your fingers is being numbed away.

And then, it fades. And a voice you recognize echoes in your mind:

---
---

Note:

All power nodes have been reintegrated. Seal integrity is affirmed. Power grid protocols allow the weakening of up to three nodes before requiring manual override.

Note:

Seal integrity is still below maximal and continues to decline. Chaotic energy increases detected. Recommendation: fully patch core seal.

Flint is actually the human incarnation of Hyperion or somehow linked to him. This is why he had so much light magic when the parasite was removed during the Demon Lord fight. It is also why his parasite being removed is necessary to free Geb from the parasite Hyperion placed on him. Since the Elemental Lord's were probably shunted into the Endless Void, when we take Flint there he'll have to resist a roll for Hyperion assuming direct control.

The nat 1 will be used there.

You glance up to the looming palace. That magic you sense earlier gnaws at your curiosity. Does it hold more answers?

...standing here, in this place, with all your shards together...there's no time like the present. Adavan and company won't get where they're going for some days, at least. You can spare a few minutes.

You make your way back up to the palace, half-walking over the snow, half flying up the ice-crusted cliffs. The storm slows you only slightly. Heat and cold never posed you much burden.

In short order, you make your way back to the front of the palace. While the entrance was good and destroyed by Wrath's stature, it seems that most of the damage is superficial. The outer wall is collapsed, but the innards are fine - clearly the palace isn't a casual pile of stone. You climb up a heap of rubble and slip into a crack.

In a moment, you're in the grand hall, the sound of the blizzard dulled behind you. You step forward, your legs lengthening and warping to keep your body steady as you go over the wholes and gouges left from Wrath's passing.

At the end of the hall lies the ruined half-arch of stone set against the back wall. At one time, it must have been one continuous piece. Did Wrath have something to do with that?

<Not I,> comes Retribution's voice.

Hmm. Solves that problem.

You move in closer to investigate the magic.

A vision takes you. You're over the land - high. Impossibly high. Venia stretches below you, the lands and seas, as if you can see it like one of Duke Vellik's maps. And then you fly south, past the edge of the water, past anything altogether, and there is only an endless black nothing.

In the distance, you see the light of the sun - a vast orb floating further in the endless space. Despite the incredible velocity at which you seem to move, it grows no closer. How far must it be?

But then, something ahead.

An island looms in the darkness. It floats alone in the void. The entire thing is...reversed. The darkest corners gleam with light. Open spaces seem pitch black. It's a photo-negative of the world as you know it.

-----
-----

The vision ends. You snap back to reality, sitting in the cold palace, alone.

What was that place?

But then, you already know. The place from which Erebus came. The end of the directive.

The magic seems gone from the archway - used up. Perhaps it was something left in case the archway itself was damaged? The way it is set almost reminds you of a door. Perhaps, originally, there was a link between this place and the island.

Valeria said that Blackwater was the only man known to have sailed to the end of the world. Perhaps he could shed some light, or offer advice on how to proceed.

As you consider what you've seen, a Wind rises at your back.

The entire reason you HAVE players is because shadow quest is so massive it draws people in, who then look for stuff to do between the autoupdates and tabbed browsing. I know I do!

You turn.

The rubble at the front of the palace is cleared in an explosion of wind. It's a wind you've never seen before - slices of green power tainted by black shadow.

No. You have seen that wind before. But you thought it was unique.

You were wrong.

The stone is lifted as the wind churns, as if a giant hand of darkness is slipping under all of it - and then it lifts, and the rubble is lifted away, and thrown. Your gaze is locked on the giant chunks as they're catapulted away and into the darkness.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFGQDdQ2lYc
>why not

Eight mages march forward - two of water, two of shadow, one earth, one fire, one lightning, one of spirit. Huge magics are ready in their hands. They came prepared.

The magic fires. You're already moving. A flurry of water formed to ice sweeps in. You blast off the ground and avoid it -

- but fire greets you. Your shards resonate. Breeze comes to your aid. The world turns, and you're past the fire. It brushes harmlessly into the wall next to you.

And the wall itself warps and changes. Stalactites grow and spike and launch themselves at you, but you're a step ahead of every attack. You run along the wall, using your wings to build momentum, and then press off again as a hand made of stone attempts to grab you.

Lightning and spirit meet where you're headed. The opposing elements clash, then explode. You blink around them.

In a flash, you're in a dozen places at once, blinking here, there, everywhere. The mages lose track of you after the first few jumps, but you keep blinking. They draw in a tight circle, bunching together for protection. Their confidence is faltering - nervous gazes sit on every face. The shadow mages raise protective barriers to guard against your own element, but that won't do them any good if you destroy their magic - or you simply crush them with your strength.

With them off-balance and unsure, you plan a retreat. But then, a voice rings out above the battle.

<Hold! Do not strike him!>

The mages hesitate. The magic lessens. Their gazes still flick about for you, but they don't move.

You glance about, seeking the source of the voice, but you can't feel any other presence. None of the mages spoke - you're sure of that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3rbTmBstTA

And then you see her, coming in through the cleared entryway, now open to the elements. She picks her way forward through the strewn remains of your battle with Wrath as if every movement is carefully considered; but she walks as gracefully as if that itself is an effortless task. If Sandalphon's eyes are steel, and Yi Fang's eyes are like fires, then hers are as cold as ice.

You cannot sense her at all. It's as if she isn't even there. For some reason, this bothers you more than if she had the sun-like presence of the other two mages.

In her hand is a staff - one you've seen before. The Staff of Winds!

"Be at ease," she says to her mages. She looks at you, having no trouble pinpointing you behind one of the columns. The mages all follow her gaze in order to get a bead on you once more. " "I must offer you my apologies. I mean you know harm, and I pray you forgive my vanguard their presumption. We weren't sure what to expect. It is of little consequence to one such as yourself, but for ourselves, time obscures much knowledge. We had to be cautious."

The woman firmly plants herself between her 'vanguard' and you. "I have long awaited the return of the Lord of Justice." She lowers her head in a short, somber bow. "I am the Black Lady, Queen-Protector of Vampiria. Servant of Darkness, should you have me."

I really hope that our 100 can extend ever so slightly into being able to give her a bit of a surprise by addressing her by name at least once rather than by her Black Lady title.

...That is, if the crit at least provides some lingering protection from her jumping immediately to the (correct) conclusion that we could only possibly know who she is from a connection to Yi Fang.

After all, starting off negotiations by implying a mildly disconcerting air of omniscience: good. But accidentally shitting all over a potential alliance the minute it presents itself in an attempt to do so? Bad.

I'll post it next thread and see what the early arrivals think of it. Maybe add to it and let on that we're not exactly Erebus, too, and have connections to a certain former Highest. Should create a sufficiently terrible leak of information.
>>
>>27946441
Maybe say something to the extent of

<Once I was known as Erebus, Arbiter of Justice and Blah Blah Blah.

The thing to remember of this situation is that Vampiria fired first, and then spoke second.

Just see her reaction.
>>

>>

Let's not reveal fucking ANYTHING that she doesn't obviously already know until we know EXACTLY who she is, what she wants from us, and which "side" she's on.

I know we like to be wordy, but sometimes it's best to start with a simple greeting and figure things out from there.
>>
>>27946583
...which is something I did not suggest, rather that once we know her position we can leverage the positive ties and advances we've made with Archon to facilitate her integration into the alliance if it's a possibility for her nation.
>>
>>27946580

Not really.

Its playing off of her words.

'oh great justice is back, take me!'
'Justice? What about YOUR wrongdoing'

Also, our newfound humanity and wholeness and NO inner battles vs order.

I think its fitting to take a moment to instrospect on what just happened, and how the black lady presents herself - and try this dry humor thing out.

Also
>>27946526
>>27946558
>>27946567
>>27946583

Are all valid points and part of the thinking. You do NOT reveal connections to her known enemies, especially not right off the bat when they have you outgunned.

If that means pretending to be justice while she makes her pitch - so be it.
>>
>>27946622
>meet god-like powerful shadow vampire mage with OP staff of winds
>dry humor time

Keep in mind that she has a history of "Irreverence" and "Trickery." All this could just be playful pandering to get us to play our cards & vet our responses.
>>
>>27946644

Yes.

Which is exactly why we should respond in kind.

Look.

We just got spawncamped by an alliance of ALL chaos element types, and a sorcerous queen with Lord-tier relics.

She is playing for KEEPS, and I seriously doubt her plan was to go 'lol hire me'.

Fuck no.

She wants our power for SOMEthing, and will take it by hook or by crook.

Talking gives us both chances to draw out each other's plans, and .... that may mean clamming up about our connections and feelings( especially since erebus has this reputation).

in any case.... I'm tempted to say she's actually possibly an Erebus Servant from back when. With some sort of corrupted Shadow/Consume power due to Servant/Chosening.
This would explain 'vampires' quiiiiittee well, as well as the flavor(and myth) of her immortality.

So....
that means this is an Adavan moment, where she has expectations of us half- rooted in the Old World.

So tread wisely.

if you're going to complain about my dialogue - lets come up with something better.

I do like the bit about correcting her to Mister Shadow.
>>
>>27946750
Vampirism was created by Archon along with Orcs and Werewolves, wasn't it?
>>
>>27946769

Yeah, Archon headed by Yi Fang created Orcs, Werewolves, and Vampires. They don't need an explanation, they have one.
>>
>>27946750
>This would explain 'vampires' quiiiiittee well, as well as the flavor(and myth) of her immortality.
Read the book about Vampiria in the pastebin. You're just wrong.
>>
>>27946750
Archon created vampires as magical experiments.

The message of your dialogue was just too unserious, and you don't win anything from playing the games -responding in kind- to what god-tier rusers such as herself present.
I'll just be advocating short and to the point next time. The silliness can wait until after we see her peoples and lands, which will be a better judge of her character, before going off on edging into her attitude.
>>
Somewhat heavy-handed speech is go!

>>27946152
<To be quite honest, I'd been thinking on and off about contacting you for some time now. My condolences on the loss of your loyal dragon... oh, wait, how silly of me, he wasn't exactly YOUR dragon, was he?>

Conversational, but sort of reinforces that she's right to feel at least some sense of obligation toward us.

<Although you suggested that time obscures knowledge, I suspect if you thought back, you might recall that Erebus was not exactly one to keep subordinates.

But time doesn't only obscure, after all. Sometimes, it also makes things clear.>

<But I've gone off track. Much of the world does not look kindly on Erebus. For this reason, among others, you may call me Shadow.

I suspect that you know of a woman named Melody who would understand the desire to take a new name. And who would also appreciate the difference between simply pursuing one's duty, and doing what is Just.>

Judging by Yi's infodump about Melody leaving Archon, Yi's Archonium-driven laser focus on making Archon "great" again and losing sight of everything else was the major tipping point that drove her away. Hinting at the fact that we chose to make the OPPOSITE decision at some point might ingratiate ourselves with her even moreso than the Erebus appellation would alone.

Interesting that she chooses to address us with the Justice monicker, as opposed to any of the other piles of Erebus' titles. That, plus the fact that she showed up with a cadre of all sorts of elemental mages means she could very well be more open than we might think to the Balance plan.

If we really decide against talking right now, I suppose the alternative is just to agree to let her give us the whole Vampiria tour and sales pitch at a point shortly in the future and get down to business then, once we're not in the middle of doing a laundry list of things.
>>
>>27947120
Though, depending on how the quest feels next thread, we may have to account for our key-retrieval obligation.

I think Adavan and co. can handle it, but there's a good chance we'll vote to accompany them anyway.
>>
>>27947120
Not sure about that first line. Was it her specifically that stated the dragon was hers or was that just other people making connections?
>>
Huh. If we went after Addy first then the Black Lady would've fought Wrath.
And probably would've won, too...
>>
Elf queen's relative person that we talked to said the dragon was summoned by Erebus, but served the Black Lady in our absence.
>>
>>27947213
I see. Then the little schpeel there at the start provided by lolwut isn't needed, she already very well knows that it's not hers and they probably only helped each other to make erebus rise again.

Of course, that also means we betrayed one of her allies way back at the beginning of the quest.
>>
>>27947186
The only person who ever actually stated that the dragon was hers was Duke Vellik, IIRC, and he was just misinformed.

>>27947213
This isn't EXACTLY right, but is functionally close enough for our purposes.

>"Indeed," Valeria says. "In your absence, the dragon was harrassing elvish ships. The isles and the angels have a certain agreement; the elves keep the Black Lady's navy to the northern seas, and the angels leave the elves in peace."

><Did the Lady speak with the dragon?>

>"We don't know," Valeria says. "Though it's quite possible.

It doesn't exactly matter whether she actually spoke with Do'Vak; his actions were almost strictly to Vampiria's benefit, and those actions got him offed by the Elves, who otherwise would probably have just left him alone.

We don't want to harp on it too hard, since we A) don't really care all that much, B) actively don't want her looking into avenging the dragon's death on our behalf, and C) REALLY don't want it coming to light that we were actually more or less responsible for offing him in the first place.

It just struck me as an amusing way to make sure that we start our discussion from an even more firmly established position of strength, even if it is only out of a fleeting sense of panic about whether something so trivial to us is actually something that would affect her standing in our eyes.
>>
>>27947287
<I just woke up and had no idea what was going on.>
There, problem solved. I doubt she's enough of a dumb cunt to bitch at us for getting our own summon killed.
