-LAST TIME IN SALEM-
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/27797888/

You, Natalia Jean-Louis, young witch of Afro-Carribean descent, had a bad first day of school. Everything was going fine until that AWFUL CREATURE, Sophia Dahl, a member of Turtle House, spilled a baldness potion on you and sent you into hysterics. After attacking her and being sent to the nurse’s office. Following a mild emotional breakdown there, you went off to Dueling class! You really botched it there. Professor Squall wants you to come in early for extra practice on your second day of class. You finished out the exhausting day with Magical History class and somehow managed to NOT fall completely asleep. Instead you found it strangely invigorating. You also got a TOTALLY badass bandana from the cute older Eel House member, Allen. He seems…. nice. You retired at the end of the day in a heap, glad for that awful day to be over.

-NEW FATE TOKEN SYSTEM-

So if you’ve been paying attention at all, you would have noticed that I interject -ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: BLAHBLAHBLAH- occasionally. This started out as a joke, but after the last Q&A some anons brought up that we don’t have a Fate Token system, which could have saved our emotional well-being at least once so far. SO. I have decided that for every THREE achievements you unlock (which I have drafted quite a few out for story purposes, and I’ll interject more randomly if funny stuff happens), you get ONE Fate Token. These tokens can be used to re-roll ONE roll per token, and only through a moderate amount of consensus. I may decided to call for votes for this.

-ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: MASTER OF YOUR OWN FATE-
(counts as: three achievements)

The last time you were up this early was for the trip out to the boat, you think to yourself. That feels like ages ago, even though it was just the other day. Already your life is so different, you muse as you see the sun slowly rising above the thick forest of trees that encompasses the island. Things feel still as you stand in the sand lot among your three other peers who failed to do well in Dueling the previous day. The embarrassment still stings on your cheeks, but this is a chance for you to redeem yourself.

Your head itches slightly under the bandana, the tonic was doing its job but your hair was still no longer than two inches at most. The school nurse swore that it would restore your hair to its proper length soon, now you are starting to doubt his word.

Squall finally decides its time to begin. She makes you line up in a row and has you practice Accio in drill form each of you go one after another continually. First, you feel like you are not improving but then you’re able to move the iron balls towards you.

This practice goes on for a few more moments before Squall puts a steady hand up.

“Very well.” She calls out and your group stops. “Now you’ll go one at a time just like you did in class yesterday.”

When it’s your turn to go up you feel your stomach clench. ‘Accio’ is a very simple spell, it was unacceptable that you failed the first time around. You take a deep breath to steady yourself. Arm raised with your long wand in hand you point at your target before you.

“Accio!” Your voice cracks a little bit.

You didn’t expect it, but one of the iron balls lets out a large hop and glides a few inches off the ground towards you, taking a final resting spot at your feet. Squall nods her approval.

After a while she seems pleased with the group’s results. She nods to herself and motions for you to circle up. The group does so.

“I see much improvement from yesterday.” She calmly states. “It is still very important for you to practice. Every year there are always a handful of students that struggle in my class. This does not mean that my expectations for your success will be any lower than even the most skilled of your classmates so it is imperative for you to try your hardest.”

She clears her throat and continues, the early sun glinting off of her reddish-brown hair. “I will be on the field every morning from six till breakfast at eight. Feel free to stop by.”

With that she dismisses your group and two of the students begin walking towards the main house.

Things are already off to a better start. Fortunately she didn’t keep you till eight so you still have a little time before breakfast. How do you spend it?

You notice that you are not the only one still sticking around. A young dark skinned boy with oiled wavy hair remains on the field as well. His small starfish pin glints at you. He seems a little uncomfortable though so you approach the teacher first.

“Ah, Ms. Squall?” You ask, feeling a little intimidated by the very tall woman but your drive for mastery of this spell negates these feelings. “Do you have any other pieces of advice or tips for casting ‘Accio’ or other spells you’ll be teaching us?”

She raises an eyebrow but then retires it.
“Actually, I do.”

Before she continues she points to the boy still on the field. “You! Do you want to get in on this or do you just want to stand around?”

The young boy jolts a bit to attention. “Yes ma’am!” He scurries over next to you to show his interest.

Squall turns to face one of the rouge iron balls. “This type of magic is all about direction of energy and bending of wills. It is the ball’s desire to remain where it is, it is yours for it to come to you.”

Her wand makes a crisp swishing sound in the air and the iron ball quickly flies into her free hand obediently.

“I find it helps,” She continues, “By simply imagining the result of the spell. Going into the action confidently and with a clear image will help your overall success.”

Now very curious you practice the spell but now with this new advice. You do find that the ball seems to come to you with more ease. You thank her graciously after this lesson.

Squall retires to the other end of the field, rounding up the equipment. You take this time to introduce yourself to another classmate that you’ll be sharing multiple classes with over the years.

“Hi, I’m Natalia.” You extend a hand for him which he takes politely. “I see you’re in Starfish house, how is it so far?”

“Oh,” He glances down at his lapel, almost forgetting that he was wearing his pin at all. “Yeah I like them enough. Kind of loud sometimes but everyone is really nice. The puzzle to get into the dorm is rough though. It took me forever to figure it out last night.”
“Oh?” You inquire with some curiosity. Didn’t all houses have mechanical based puzzles? They didn’t seem that tough.

“Yeah, it’s this puzzle walkway over the water. You have to walk across it but you can’t see the walkway to the dorm and it’s not in a solid line so you fall off it into the water a lot.”

Water? You immediately remember the strange house boat with a garden on top floating stationary in the ocean when you were coming in on the clipper ship. That must be the Starfish house dorms he was talking about. An invisible patterned bridge sounded frustrating.

“Sorry, I’m Jeremy by the way. I’m still a little tired. I almost fell off it three more times today on my way to this. That’s why I was kind of zoning out.” He rubs at his brown eyes. “That and you know, wondering about her scar.”

It might have been burned and then cut clear off, but that doesn’t make sense. Why would someone do that?”

That was actually a very good question. Who would be that upset with Squall that they would go to such an effort to hurt her in two ways?

You shrug. “Let’s just ask her.” Seems pretty rational to you. No use blundering about with crazy theories. Just get down to business. Your House Founder would be proud at your pragmatism, you feel.

“Ms. Squall!” You call out to her loudly, it takes a few more shouts before you can get her attention. She cups her good ear. “What happened to your ear?”

You hear a hearty laugh in response. “Don’t worry about it. This,” She gestures to her scarred side of her head. “Won’t happen as long as little boys and girls pay attention in their dueling class.”

“Well, at least she didn’t get upset,” Jeremy remarks. “Want to head over to breakfast?”

“Ah well you know, we’re the guys who usually get along well with anyone. Greatly value community and straight forward thinking. Not really too complicated to be honest. Not like those crazy Octopus house-rs, I haven’t been here long but I can already tell it’s hard to exactly put down what’s going on in their heads.”

He thinks for a bit more, obviously not being satisfied with his short answer of the house.

“Oh! We have this awesome roof top garden on the boat with some animals that live in it. It’s a great place to wander up to get some quite from the rest of the dorms. Besides, I’ve already been able to get a jump start on some Herbology lessons. Too bad we don’t get to have it together. We’re stuck with Turtle house.”

The name makes you grit your teeth instinctively. Fortunately you just had two classes with them, unfortunately you had one of those classes left: Charms.

The two of you finally make it to the large red brick building known as the Main House. You already hear some people calling out for Jeremy as you enter the large room.

You return to the welcoming sight of your class table. Intricate gold bowls hold fruit and pastries adron the oak tables. You easily find Todd who is munching on a exceptionally juicy pear. Just as you are about to bid him a good morning a firm pair of hands grabs your shoulders excitedly.

“Natalia!” An excited squeal comes from behind you, you can tell by the southern timbre of the voice that it is none other than Angela. She quickly turns you around. “I-didn’-see-ya-this-mornin’-but-that’s-not-the-point! Did Todd tell you what he saw!”

Todd sighs, “Of course not she’s just shown up.”

“Tell her Todd!” The short blond girl is practically exploding with excitement.
“A chickcha-” He begins

“A Chickachaney!” Angela interjects before Todd can finish. He gives her a hard look.

“Sorry! I’m just so excited.” She defends.

You search your mind for what a Chickachaney exactly is. You recall that it is a large flightless owl, usually not very attractive, that supposedly will bestow good luck on to those who treat it with kindness or bad luck on those who treat it unfairly.

“I saw it in the forest on my way home from some late night studying in the library. It scampered off before I could get close though.” Todd explained. “Was still really cool to see one.”

“WE NEED TO FIND IT!” Angela looks at him seriously.

“How would we even do that? The island is huge.” Todd pointed out as he took another bite of his pear. “I’m not against it, I’m just saying.”

“Duh! They like to hang out at crossroads. We just need to go to every crossroad this school has tonight to find it!” Angela simply explained.

“What if it doesn’t decide to come out tonight? Also they aren’t always only at crossroads. I didn’t see it at one last night.” Todd tries to rationalize with her, but the effort is lost.

Angela lets out a small squeal of excitement and claps her hands a bit before taking a seat to devise a strategy and grab some food before class. You join her and grab a croissant. The three of you decide that you will meet in outside Eel house in the forest outside instead of all meeting up outside the dorms and going out together, which was quickly decided to attract too much attention. From there the three of you would explore the roads of the school to find cross roads and hopefully the mysterious creature.

Soon it’s time for Herbology. If you need to ask any questions about the plan tonight now’s the time.

“Won’t someone be patrolling the roads? Also how are we going to get it’s attention?” You ask your fellow Eel-House members.

“Well that’s easy peasy.” Angela reassures. “We just give anyone we see the slip by going into the forest. And if it’s really that much of a trouble then we’ll just walk along side the road but hide among the trees.”

“As for the Chickcharney itself you can leave that to me.” Todd chimes in. “I probably have some sort of jerky left over from the boat ride and if not I can slip something off the plates after dinner.”

With the plans fully intact the three of you leave for Herbology class which is located on the same side of the island as the dueling field but much farther away. As you walk you are suddenly struck with a longing for your ferret, Snowball. You had to leave early this morning while he was still curled up on your pillow. You comfort yourself with the thought of having the tiny sock-like rodent wrapped warmly around your neck.

It takes about twenty minutes for your group to walk from the main house to the herbology botanical garden. Large stone archways covered in ivy and fountains that are thick with lilly pads decorate the area. You see a large group of black clad students so you join them. As soon as you do, you see who is your teacher for this class. Unlike the others you’ve had this man was dressed in dirt covered blue jeans and an equally dirty red flannel top. His hair was even more untidy than Angela and had the color of sand.

He gives your group a large wave, “Hey kids! I’m Mr. Christofferson! Glad to see you all were able to find your way out here.”

Mr. Christofferson pauses and looks to the field and then looks back at you. “Well, you just kind of….you know. Without them screaming and stuff.” The answer seems obvious to everyone but himself. “You’ll figure it out. Come now!”

The group reluctantly makes their way into the field. You notice that there are some shears in a basket on the ground. However, you see an Octopus house girl clip at middle of the stalk, causing the plant to emit a loud and horrible high pitch scream. You wonder….

You grab some of the shears and roll up your robes as you walk through the muck. Sticking your hand into the mud you find the base of the plant and then use the shears to cut the stalk off right at the base. You brace yourself, expecting to hear the horrible screaming as the plant fell to the ground.

However you are met with only a small bubble burping from the stalk’s base.

You decide that you would greatly appreciate it if the air wasn’t thick with the screams of the reeds. First, you go over to Todd, whose stalk has already decided to start screaming after he pulled it up halfway off the ground. You quickly bend down and give it a clean sip at the base, making the root bundle fall back into the mud and finally silencing it.

Todd looks at you with surprise. “How did you figure it out?”

“To be honest, just kind of looked around.” You admit to him with little fanfair. “I hadn’t seen anyone cut them out at the base part so I thought I would give it a shot.”

You spend the rest of the period helping a few other classmates.

>Relations with Eel House +5

Eventually the class comes to a close and not one student was spared from the mud of the reed field. Fortunately, the teacher lets your class out early to allow for everyone to wash up before their next class. You all take turns rinsing off from one of the many water spigots in the gardens until one of the Octopus House students starts spraying people randomly. The room rapidly descends into chaos as the students start spraying each other and playing with the hoses.

The sudden smell of woodsmoke takes your attention from the anarchy. You glance around looking for the source. A slumped figure stands out of the corner of your eye deep within the forest. You whirl around on your heel instinctively to see nothing but empty forest staring back at you. Weird.

“What is it Natalia?” Angela asks as she rubs a glob of dirt off her nose.

“Nothing. Just seeing things,” you respond as the strange heaviness in the pit of your stomach returns. A feeling of mysterious dread sweeps over you.

You suddenly realize that your next class is Charms, which Eel House shares with Turtle House.

Thanks forthe run! Why did you decide to run a Harry Potter universe quest?
>>

A few questions -

1. What year is this quest happening in?

2. Is this an alternate universe where the events of the books didn't happen, like in the quest with Millicent?

I've been working on a splatbook for the homebrewed HP RPG that the original HPQuest was based on. That quest inspired me to build the Salem Institute and flesh out Magical America. I'm really excited for you guys (and Natalia) to explore this part of the world.

1. The year is around the same time as the show Archer

2. No, it had effects. We're just in a different part of the world, and it's not immediately relevant to the story. Just as Hitler is not immediately relevant to Gray's Anatomy.

How regularly will you be running this? Weekends only?

I'm from Europe, so today's quest was perfectly timed - it doesn't matter how long I stay up on a Saturday.

Thanks for running this, regardless. This setting gives me warm fuzzy feelings.

So is Salem the only magical school in all of America?

I mean the United States is quite a bigger country than Great Britain.

It really depends on my work schedule. I definitely try to run one friday or saturday, and if I can pump more out during the week, even better.

There's a school in Canada, and there's a school in Mexico. As of the current date, this is the only school in the US. There's been discussion in the Society about opening a new school on the Pacific Coast, although this is not immediately relevant to the plot. Just random lore-bits.

Don't forget to archive this, QuestFag.
