Well, in case you haven't been reading up on my Twitter, I've got a bit of an announcement to make. Due to various reasons, I've been kind of losing motivation to keep VMQ2 going. Couple that with my desire to write non-VMQ related quests, and you can tell where this is going.

However, I still want to finish VMQ2 rather than leave it hanging. The best compromise will be to just cut the story to it's essential plot and power through to the end. But this doesn't mean VMQ will be gone for good. I might post occasional extra stories or whatnot, but as a full blown series, VMQ is essentially done in my mind.

Well, now that that's been said, on to VMQ!

You are LUCAS WILLIAMS, a member of the mercenary company Demons of Randgriz and a graduate from its elite TIER ONE Program. You are now part of the elite, but inexperienced WRAITH TEAM, consisting of you and your fellow classmates from training.

After a grueling year of training and quick battle to get rid of some troublesome pirates harassing Gallia's northern coast, you and Wraith Team have found yourselves transferred to the exotic land of San Salvacion, an entire ocean away from Gallia. You've been brought in to help the beleaguered country suppress the rebels that oppose its rule, as well as counter any possible Erusean aggression from the South.

Unfortunately, the action started much sooner than you thought it would when your base was ambushed literally almost the moment you set foot in it. While the attackers were repulsed, the attack has left you and your squad a bit shaken that presumably poorly armed and organized rebels could strike at the heart of San Salvacion's military power in the south so easily.

Unfortunately, it seems the situation is getting more and more complicated as more players in this conflict begin to reveal themselves, such as Emmerian special forces, Imperial weapon smugglers, unscrupulous rival mercs, and more...

This was probably a stupid idea.

No, scratch that, this was a REALLY stupid idea.

Barreling down into a village swarming with enemies, with confirmed lancer presence, in a relatively lightly armored but still big and conspicuous armored vehicle was tantamount to suicide in most modern combat scenarios. However, what WASN'T stupid was trying to rescue two downed squadmates.

Behind you, you could hear the cracks of sniper rifles and mortar lances raining down onto the village as the rest of the squad behind you tries to provide what supporting fire they can.

"Okay Lucas, how do we approach this?" Runaround asks. "Full evasive or full offensive?"

Runaround's suppressing fire doesn't seem to nail many Eruseans, mostly blowing apart the wooden huts at the end of the street. However, it did a good job scattering them, giving the both of you the precious few seconds you needed to reach the alley without getting harassed. Without missing a beat, you leap out the back ramp, and you can already seen quite a few bodies laying in the alley, but you couldn't make out who was who.

Sudden pinging and sounds as well as the whistle of hastily fired lances fill the air as the Eruseans regroup and return fire. It's quickly drowned out by Trombe's autocannon, but you can tell it's only a matter of time before one of those lances finds its mark.

You rush deeper into the alley, where you can see about six dead Erusean soldiers. MK is slumped against the wall, while Falynn is lying facedown on the ground.

You instinctively run to Falynn's side, not only because shew as your girlfriend, but also the squad engineer/medic. Priority medical attention always had to be given to specialists. You flip her face up and check for pulse, and are greatly relieved that you find one. You then quickly scan and pat down her body for wounds but don't see anything obvious. From the blood on her forehead, your best guess is that she got hit in the head by some flying debris or something like that, which knocked her out cold. However, just in case, you grab one of the ragnaids in her bag and pop it.

You then rush over to MK, who you see is clinging to consciousness.

"Hey there Lucas." She manages to croak. "Bout damn time you guys showed up."

"Where are you hit?" You ask, bringing Falynn's ragnaid bag with you.

"Kinda obvious, don't you think?" MK motions down with her chin. You see blood seeping out from her abdomen. Gut shot. "Hurts like hell."

"Yeah, I'll take care of it." You pop another ragnaid. "Can you move on your own?"

"I-I don't think so." MK mumbles.

Damn, and Falynn didn't seem to be waking up either. That meant you'd have to carry both them out.

"Runaround! I got them! I need some pickup ASAP!" You yell.

"Coming in!" Runaround says. "Hold on!"

There are some close calls, but Runaround makes it back into the village without getting hit by any lances, miraculously enough. You can still hear sniper and lance fire sailing over your head, so at least the rest of the squad was still doing their best to help you out.

You glance at both MK and Falynn. MK is still to weak to move on her own and Falynn is still out cold.

In either case you manage to reach the Trombe and run into the back of the vehicle. You set both MK and Falynn down and yell, "We're clear! Go go go!"

Thankfully, you don't get any lance hits as you retreat full speed up the hill. However, you can see more and more Eruseans swarming through the village, and now they're firing mortar lances of their in response to Edwin and Sparky

"Okay! Everybody's through! We're falling back!" Simo yells.

With that, the squad quickly packs up their gear and withdraws back through the safety of the west gate. There's already a team of doctors waiting and they quickly carry MK and Falynn out for treatment.

"That was a stupid risk you took." Simo says as he watches the doctors do their work.

"I know, sir."

"Good job, Lucas." Simo pats you on the back. "But the day's not over yet."

"We're going back out?" You blink.

"Yeah. We've got one of two assignments. Both pretty crappy. We either try and hold the west gate, or keep the north road clear. West gate is important for obvious reasons, but we need the north road in order to keep an open supply route with Vitoze."

MK and Falynn, on the other hand, well, Falynn seemed to have regained consciousness and was busy getting bear hugged by Charlotte, much to the protests of the doctors. MK was back on her feet, but obviously still in a bit of pain.

"I guess we'll just have to make do." You sigh. "Where's Runaround? I don't see Trombe anywhere."

"He's grabbing a new vehicle. The Viper is not ideal for a slugfest like this." Simo says.

"Okay, I'll meet you there, just give me a second."

You then dash over to where Falynn is sitting, a large bandage wrapped around her forehead.

"Hey." Falynn says weakly.

"Hey." You respond, grinning slightly.

"MK told me what you did...so um... thanks." Falynn mumbles.

"I'm pretty sure you would have done the same thing." You smile and kiss Falynn on the forehead. "I gotta go. The Eruseans are still out there. You stay here with MK and make sure she doesn't get into trouble, okay?"

"Y-yeah. Good luck!" Falynn nods.

With your spirits back up knowing that Falynn was safe, you then jog back to the rally point at the north gate, where the rest of the squad has gathered. However, the Trombe, and by extension Runaround, is still absent.

"Good of you to join us." Simo nods. "Now we just have to find out the best way to defend that road."

I agree! Falynn dies in Charlotte's arms. Lucas blood furies but ends up killed by not-so-dead Kravchenko while Lara watches from the sky.

She deploys all four smart lances but one catches Trombe, incinerating Runaround and the rest of the squad. In shame and horror and she crashes into Kravchenko...but fails to kill him.

Suddenly, a massive tank you've never seen before rolls up to the gate. It was... the oddest damn thing you've ever seen.

"Runaround, the what heck is that?!" You blink.

"Heh, when Nemo saw that hit Trombe took, she literally pulled me out and dragged me to this little baby here. Said it should afford some better protection."

"Hold it." Lucina whispers, motioning for you to stop. "I see movement up ahead."

She motions for you to stay low and she silently creeps forward, with all of you following close behind. Somehow, Lucina manages to find the one route that avoids literally anything that could possibly make a sound to give you away, from dry leaves to stray tree branches and bushes. Soon enough, you manage to see what Lucina had spotted.

It was a lancer team, set up in a wooded berm right around a curve in the road. A perfect spot for an ambush. Obviously they didn't want any reinforcements arriving. There was probably about four lancers, a couple of scouts, gunners, and engineers, and at least six shocktroopers. However, there was something odd about them...

"They're Imperial." Lucina says. "Elites, too, from the look of it."

"What?!" Charlotte hisses. "What the hell are Imp special ops doing all the way out here!?"

"Well, the Imps are basically running this show, so I'm not surprised." You sigh. "You think we can take them?"

"Possibly." Lucina says. They're watching both ends of the road, but not in this direction. We have the element of surprise.

"Wait a minute..." Charlotte squints. "Who the hell is that guy?"

You look at where Charlotte is and indeed, you see a soldier who seems to stand apart from the others. He's wearing slightly heavier armor, and he's surrounded by engineers.

"Looks like some big shot." Morgan says. "I think I might have a shot."

"I don't know, this might be too much for us to take on..." You frown.

Your opening volley is absolutely devastating. You see two lancers literally melt under your sustained fire, while Charlotte guns down two of the shocktroopers. Lucina wings one of the scouts while Morgan scores a direct hit on the armored figure's chest.

Almost immediately everybody hits the dirt, not sure where the fire is coming from. The return fire is sporadic at best. However, you can see the armored figure still up and moving, as he and the engineers attempt to retreat through the jungle.

"We're hearing fire! What's going on?!" Simo yells through the radio.

"Contact with an Imp special ops squad!" You report. "They just off the road a couple hundred meters from the base. Some support would be nice!"

"Roger, give us fifteen seconds!"

While the return fire is sporadic at best, bullets were still bullets, and a few found their mark.

Being at the head of the formation, Lucina took the brunt of it, as you see at least three separate bullet impacts strike her. Even after getting hit multiple times, Lucina still manages to retain the sense of mind to roll into a covered position as she falls, so that anybody coming to her aid would be relatively protected as well.

Your adrenaline surges and you don't even remember crossing the distance between you and Lucina. Heck, the weight of your gear doesn't even feel any heavier than a feather, right now.

"Lucina! Lucina!" You yell. "Are you alright?"

"J-just had the wind knocked out of me." Lucina winces.

Closer examination show three solid impacts on her armored vest. No penetrations, thankfully, but you'd be surprised if the hits didn't shatter most if not all her ribs. You can tell when Lucina is trying to suppress pain. You quickly grab her ragnaid and pop it.

Meanwhile, Charlotte and Morgan keep up the fire, with another shocktrooper and lancer dropping. You can also hear the rumble of Runaround's new tank as it approaches. The last lancer fires off a shot, but he was shooting with the expectation of firing at a regularly proportioned tank, not the low riding, turretless contraption Runaround was operating. It sails high and into the trees.

At this point the Imps are beginning a fighting retreat. The gunners have already packed up their gear and fled, while the last three shocktroopers lay down covering fire.

"I-I don't like this." Morgan says, shivering a bit despite the jungle heat. "Something about that armored guy..."

"Let's go!" You say, leading the way, gun ready and loaded.

The trees and brush are ripped apart as you pour automatic fire into the jungle. You can ear screaming shouting before you finally hear something you wanted to hear.

"Cease fire! Cease fire! We surrender!" You hear someone yell.

At this point, Charlotte and Morgan have caught up with the engineer team. When you finally get there, you see two engineers dead, with the other two with their hands up and kneeling. The armored figure stand there stoically, unmoving. He's not armed, but he still looks rather intimidating.

"You." You say, pointing your MG at the armored figure. "Mask off."

"Th-that's not a good idea." One of the engineers warns.

"I said MASK OFF!" You yell. You've already seen several of your friends nearly die today, and you were in no mood for games.

The first engineer looks at the second and reluctantly nods.

"Subject 662, remove your helmet." The first engineer says.

"Acknowledged. Removing helmet." You hear the armored figure reply in a monotone voice as he slowly unclasps his helmet.

You all recoil at what you see.

"FINALLY!" You hear a static buzz from the thing's suit. Apparently it had a built in radio speaker. "Subject 662, please adjust your camera, I want a better look!"

The thing cocks its head a bit and you hear a rapid clicking sound.

"Oh... OH! This is marvelous! What a stroke of luck!" The voice cackles.

"Morgan, what is this about?" You say, and turn to Morgan.

5. We begin to fight even tougher opponents (i.e. Valkyrian Gene Enhanced Super Soldiers, Heavy Troopers, Ancient Valkyrian Super Weapons, etc.) and defeat them using superior tactics.

Reactions post battle:

1. She runs away after the battle, and only the Wraiths can find her, but only after much coaxing to convince them she isn't a walking weapon.

2. Everyone begins treating her as a weapon, and generally avoid her due to her "destructive powers".

3. After the battle, she is placed under arrest and sent into quarantine at Q-Labs for "study and experimentation".

You walk up to the stalls and begin checking them. You find one locked, and press your ear against the door. Sure enough, you can hear sniffling inside.

"Lucas! Morgan!" You see Simo sprinting to where you are. "Is everything all right?"

"I think we have to tell them." Morgan says.

"Yeah, I know." Simo sighs. "I was hoping it wouldn't have to come to this."

Suddenly, there's an explosion in the sky, which sends the three of you instinctively diving for cover.

"Right, we should probably handle this after the battle is over!" Simo scowls. Overhead, you can see a major dogfight initiating as you can see Gallian and Erusean fighters mixing it up. You're not sure if Lara is up there, too, but you swear you can catch glimpses of a ribbon emblem here and there.

"Hey! You! You're a gunner, right?" You see one of the Bastion guards shouting at you.

"Yeah, why?" You ask.

"We're short on AA crews, and the sky's crawling with enemy air! Get in a gun and start shooting!"

Well, you guess there were better ways to spend the day.

"We'll finish this later." You assure both Simo and Morgan before running off to the nearest AA weapon.

You unleash a hail of autocannon fire at the two attack fighters. You see some shells immediately punch through the cockpit of the lead fighter, causing it nosedive straight into the ground. The second one tries to pull away, but it only ends up exposing its vulnerable belly and you manage to land a few shells into it. The plane can't recover front its turn and in flips over in the air before crashing somewhere beyond the wall.

"Lucas! Watch out on your 3 o' clock!" You hear Morgan scream.

You turn your head and see another attack fighter trying to angle in for a strafing run on you. He must have seen you shoot down his buddies and was out to get you in revenge.

One of you cannon shots manages to punch a hole through the oncoming plane's wing. It's not enough to bring the plane down, but the pilot gets spooked and the plane quickly breaks off, trying to gain altitude when a Falcon swoops in and shreds it pieces with MG fighter. As it flies back, it waggles its wings and you can see Lara's distinctive ribbon emblem on the tail.

You fight the urge to wave back as you scan the skies for more targets of opportunity. You then see Lara's plane in a fight with a plane with a yellow belly. They begin spinning and weaving around, neither plane able to get an advantage over the other.

You're tempted to help Lara out, but something within you tells you not to. This was one of those battles that should not be interrupted. The type where both combatants wanted, no, NEEDED to be left alone.

Either way, the overall dogfight seems to be subsiding anyways. Running low on fuel and ammo, the Erusean fighters begin to disengage. Since they could use the Bastion as base rearm and refuel, the Gallian fighters don't have that limitation and continue to mercilessly pound the approaching Erusean forces.

And still, you see to planes twisting and flailing in the air. Other planes, both Gallian and Erusean, stop in midair to try see what's going on.

The dogfight between Lara and that yellow fighter is almost beautiful in a way. It's just the way their planes seem to move so smoothly and naturally, as if they BELONGED in the sky, forever soaring. Finally, both planes break off and turn, and you realize that they're both trying to decisively end the duel by forcing a head on pass.

You see the guns from both planes chatter before cutting, and both planes pass each other in the air without inflicting any damage. You've fired enough MGs to know when you see when running out of ammunition mid fire. It's happened to you quite a bit. And funnily enough, both of them ran out of ammo at the exact same time.

Curious, you key the radio to an open frequency, and you manage to catch a conversation.

"You're not bad, Ribbons, just like they say. You've got potential." You hear an unknown voice say appreciatively.

"Yellow 13, I presume?" Lara asks playfully. "I heard a lot about you, too. Maybe next we can actually bring some ammo to fight?"

"Yes, that would be nice. Next time, then."

Suddenly, you see a flash of black, and a plane drops out the sky, showering both planes with MG fire. Yellow 13 breaks away and disengages, while Lara's plane tumbles int he air briefly before regaining control, though you notice its flight is much more shaky.

"Cease fire! Cease fire! Blue on blue!" You hear another voice, no doubt another pilot, shriek.

The offending plane, a black Emmerian fighter, pulls away and disappears as quickly as it appeared.

"G-ground control... requesting emergency landing." You hear Lara's voice, weak and wet, as if she was coughing out something caught in her throat. Your blood freezes.

"Request granted. Runway is clear!"

With that, you see Lara's fighter swerve around and line up with the Bastion's airstrip, and makes an effective, if a bit sloppy landing. You have a very bad feeling.

"Lara! Lara!" You yell as you sprint for the plane. You run so fast that you beat the emergency crews dashing to check on the damage. From what you can see, Lara's plane is now a mess, riddled with bullets from end to end. You see the canopy cracked and shattered as well, an ominous sign..

You literally rip the canopy open, and time just seems to stop.

There was blood everywhere. Oh god there was so much blood.

And there, slumped down in her seat, was Lara.

"Lara! LARA!" You scream.
