You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Well, it's finally time.

After reading some of the book that the Princess lent you and sitting through one of Sir Gregory's lectures, it's now time for tea.

And just as planned, Sylvie is here.

>Guard Rank: CAT
>Congratulations, you are now an annoying CAT!
>Not one of those fancy pedigree cats, but rather a mangy stray.
>The Princess now kind of likes you a little!
>But she still doesn't consider you to be a person.

>"...Sylvie?" the Princess says, completely shocked. "Wh... what are you doing here?"
>"Umm..." Sylvie begins, fidgeting, "...Reinhold said that you wanted to celebrate my beating Mr. Niklaus so I should show up for afternoon tea...?"
>"Reinhold? You called her here?" the Princess asks you, completely unsure as to what's going on.

"It's the party you planned for celebrating Sylvie's victory," you say.
"Umm, yeah," Sylvie joins in. "Last night at dinner, Reinhold said that you wanted to celebrate over tea so, um..."
"You didn't forget, did you?" you ask.

Completely flustered, Princess Marianne darts her gaze from you to Sylvie and back again, and then covers her face with her hand.

"Th... that's right..." the Princess mumbles to herself. "After what happened yesterday, I'd completely forgotten..."
"Umm, did I come at a bad time...?" Sylvie asks.
"N- no, not at all!" she repies, a nervous smile on her face. "Wwwwould you like to take a seat? Arnaud should be here shortly with the tea."

The Princess motions for you all to sit at the table. Sylvie quickly takes a seat, and the Princess flashes you a glance of "WHY DIDN'T YOU WARN ME" before the two of you follow suit

No, no pie. Only cake now.

Bring up the cakes that we made with Melanie and Nicolette's family and the one's from Wilhelms. Also, warn her that Nico is coming to.

She sure is expressive.

Well, the party is ostensibly to congratulate Sylvie so let's start off with that.

awww shit this surprise party is going to set off quite a lady shit storm as the princess gets to see the girls probably like us and the girls get to see the princess probably likes us. Then there will be some misunderstanding which will allow jealously and self-doubt to take hold. This will probably go unnoticed by us but over time will drive a wedge between some of the girls and coming exploding back later in the quest.

>tfw dance class after this

I wonder if arch is going to keep making us roll after that last debacle or if he'll just cut scene it now that he's gotten what he wanted.

"So, Sylvie..." you begin, "...I know I've said it before, but your fight really was something. Even Sir Gregory was impressed that you managed to win."
"Ehehe, thanks!" Sylvie says, blushing slightly. "I'm still pretty much a newbie so I still don't have a lot of spells memorized, but I practice really hard with the ones that I do know."
"...you really have come quite far," the Princess says. "Especially after seeing your fight yesterday, it's hard to believe that you only took up magic a few months ago."

"Yeah, um..." Sylvie says, fidgeting. "...Daddy held off on having me learn magic until he was satisfied with my performance in a fistfight," she laughs nervously. "So when I finally learned how to use magic and they tested for my capacity, he was super excited."
"I bet he is, now he knows that he actually has someone to take after him," the Princess says with a smirk.

"So, uh, are you trying to beat Nicolette to becoming a Knight?" you ask.
"Eh!?" Sylvie stammers. "I- I don't have what it takes to... um..." she says, hiding her blushing face with her hands. "I just want to be strong like my father, that's all. I don't care about titles or ranks or any of that stuff."

As Sylvie tries to regain her composure, Arnaud enters the room with a full teaset balanced on either hand.

"Good afternoon, everyone!" he says as he places the teasets on the table. "On account of today's guests, I've brought a bit more than usual..."
"Guests?" the Princess says, turning to you.

Before you can respond, Nicolette enters the courtyard with a stack of boxes.

"Wha- Nicolette, what are you doing here?" the Princess asks, unable to hide her shocked expression.
"Yeah, I thought you were busy at this time of day..." Sylvie says.
"Well, a certain SOMEONE showed up at my house last night and caused ANOTHER someone to inform me that I have no choice but to crash this party," Nicolette says, sighing. "And then I ran into Melanie on the way here and now I'm carrying these boxes on top of everything else."

Melanie then appears from behind Nicolette, holding a single cake box.

"Umm, I'm so sorry that you ending up having to help me carry these, Miss Nicolette..." Melanie says, looking very guilty. "I tried to tell you that someone else could carry them, but..."
"Don't worry about it, we were going in the same direction anyways," Nicolette replies as she carefully places her stack of boxes on a nearby table.

"Hm..." Arnaud says, stroking his beard. "I believe that I'll just be in the way here, so I'll just leave the rest to Melanie..."

Laughing to himself, Arnaud hurries out of the courtyard. Completely overwhelmed by this turn of events, the Princess turns to you.

"...could you please tell me what exactly is going on here?" she asks, looking quite- annoyed with you.

Because they want to retcon the idea that we just spontaneously decided to hold party for Sylvie, so they can make it look like some grand artifice for friendship, even though any mention of reuniting them (why.) took place way afterwards.

Also, since Archelon confirmed flags like a fucking idiot, /tg/ can't NOT take the harem route, so they're trying to go for that.

Even though it's already confirmed that the Harem Route is the "Red Mist" route.

What are you basing this assertion on? Do you know every single person in this thread, and their degree of predilection towards harem routes? Do you know the OP and his likelihood to guide the posters towards or away from that end? Do you know what plot points will come up, or where the discussion will be even in the next thread, let alone in the endgame?

"Well, it started off as just a tea party for Sylvie, and then we decided that there should be cake," you say as you point towards the table where Melanie is hard at work removing the various cakes, cupcakes and other pastries from their boxes and arranging them neatly on the table.
"I can see that," Princess Marianne replies.
"And then somewhere along the line, me and Melanie ended up at Nicolette's house with Arianne showing me how to bake a cake..."
"...and then my old man informed me that I'd be joining in on this little party and now here I am," Nicolette chimes in, sighing.

As everything you just says processes in her mind, the Princess slowly walks over to the table that Melanie has just gotten done covering with pastries.

"You said that you baked actually..." she says, staring at the cakes.
"We only baked this one here," Melanie says, pointing to your cake. "...well, Mr. Reinhold was the one who did all the real work, all I did was read him the directions."

"Eh!? R- Reinhold, you and Melanie..." Sylvie blurts out, shocked.
"Yup, they came all the way to my house JUST so they could borrow our kitchen to bake a cake for you and Marianne," Nicolette says, sighing.
"Wha... Reinhold! You didn't have to go that far..."

"And this one was baked by Miss Nicolette's brothers..." Melanie says, pointing to Guillaume's masterpiece, "...and the rest were brought from that bakery that you like. But the whole thing was Mr. Reinhold's idea!"

The Princess looks at the cakes and then slowly turns to you, tears welling in her eyes.

"After what I did to you yesterday, why would you go out of your way to do all of this...?" she says, her voice trembling. "Even to celebrate Sylvie's victory, all of this is just..."

"Hey, don't worry about it," you say as you walk up to the table. "What's done is done, and it's not like I can really blame you considering how it all went down."

You then pick up a knife and cut a slice of the cake that you and Melanie baked, and place it on a plate.

"Have some cake and cheer up, okay?" you say as you hand it to the Princess.
"O... okay..." she replies as she dries her eyes with a handkerchief and takes the plate from you.

"Looks like you have some serious competition there, Sylvie..." Nicolette whispers to Sylvie as she takes a seat next to her.
"...you really don't know when to stop," Sylvie says as she punches Nicolette on the top of her head and then casually walks towards you and the Princess.

"So, um... how's the one that you guys baked?" Sylvie asks as she hungrily eyes the pastries that cover the table.
"It's actually really good," you reply. "But the one that Guillaume baked is DELICIOUS."
"The little brat's gotta be good at SOMETHING, after all," Nicolette chimes in from her seat at the other table.
"Ummmmmm... can I have one of each?" sylvie asks.
"Go ahead," you reply.

As the Princess returns to her seat and pours herself a cup of tea, Melanie cuts Sylvie a slice of both cakes, putting them on the same plate. Sylvie then grabs a couple of cupcakes and happily hurries back to her seat. Melanie the cuts a slice for you and Nicolette, handing them to each of you before bowing deeply.

"Hmgh?" the Princess says through a mouthful of cake, quickly choking it down. "N- not at all. I'm sure you had a large part in this, so it would be a shame if you weren't able to join in..."
"Yeah, me and Melanie are just gonna get fat if we have to split all of this between us, even with Reinhold helping out," Nicolette says.
"Um, if you insist..." Melanie says nervously.

You get up from your seat and head to the other table, cutting Melanie a slice of Guillaume's cake and handing it to her.

"Thank you, Mr. Reinhold..." Melanie says as she takes the plate from you and finds a spare chair to sit in.

You then sit back down and resume eating... but things seem more than a little bit awkward. Aside from the sound of Nicolette and Sylvie devouring every pastry they come across, the courtyard is silent.

"You should consider yourself lucky," the Princess says to you. "The last person he taught swordsmanship to was Sir Gregory, and that was over twenty years ago."

We also mentioned the brothel owner indirectly during that time too so she can surmise it wasn't just her who treated us badly.

"NO WE ARE NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT THAT AGAIN" Nicolette shouts.
"Aww, but it's funny!" Sylvie says, obviously enjoying being the one on the teasing side for a change.
"...yes, let's not bring that story up," Princess Marianne says as she tries to cover her blushing face.
"Umm... how about that time you two were taking magic lessons?" Sylvie suggests.
"That might be appropriate..." the Princess says.
"Yeah, that's fine," Nicolette replies.

"...so me and Marianne were learning magic together," Nicolette begins. "We'd just learned Aqua Suspend, so we were trying out all kinds of things with it. Using it as an umbrella, trying to catch the water orbs we threw at other, trying to see how much water we could make float at one time, that kind of thing."
"Ma- I mean, the Princess picked up all the water out of a bathtub!" Sylvie says.

Can we not directly attack their falling out.
I mean seriously, full autistic right there:

'Man the past sure contained some gems, now let's all stop thinking about the good times and talk about a sad problem; that will set the mood even higher.'

If you break up with somebody IRL, friend or more or whatever; the worst part is often how often you hear 'HEY WHY AREN'T YOU X WITH Y ANYMORE, IT SEEMED GOOD'
Of course it seemed good, it was good.
But Z happened.

You don't tell estranged people that their estrangement is stupid, because they'll take it somewhat personally and defend their estrangement to not justify their mistakes.

Let it try to fix itself.
Or if you're meddling, then be subtle for fuck's sake.
>>
>>27929221
>to not justify

He's damaged, but reasonably stable.

Citrine probably helped a lot, gave him an anchor in his life, becoming extremely good at the sword helped a lot as well, it gave him something to focus on and make him not feel powerless any more.

>>27929264
It'd probably come from his time in the army. There's always going to be some amount of bored people doing stupid but hilarious things in the military, it's a fact of life.

On that note we might be able to find stories from our military service that won't traumatize everyone else.

>>27929251
My family, generation before mine.
There was, uh; an evil eldest sibling.
The rest of the siblings differed a lot, some broke, some cope daily, some consciously suppress memory really well.
Everyone is different.

I've known people who have had their lives destroyed by abuse, but I also remember reading about the Arab Spring, a woman who was protesting was beaten and raped repeatedly. She was eventually released as the villains got bored, instead of breaking down, she used the experience to fuel other people's opinions and got right back on the streets to continue protesting.
I'm not judging people who break, but it takes something different to break everyone.

Additionally, military service can be a boon for some; as well as a negative experience others.
Again, personal differences.

"Oh my..." Melanie says, giggling. "I've never heard that one before."
"Yeah, that happened before you got here," Nicolette replies. "It's back when my Grampa was still around, so that was over eight years ago."
"Yes, I had just turned seven," the Princess says.
"You have any other stories?" you ask.
"Nothing that I want to bring up..." Nicolette says.
"Umm, would you mind if I told one?" Melanie asks.
"...you're telling a story?" the Princess turns to her, surprised. "If you'd like to to, then I don't see why not."

"It was shortly after I began working here," Melanie begins, "Prince Giancarlo was visiting from Marconetti, and um... nobody liked him very much."
"...oh," the Princess's eyes grow wide. "You're telling -that- story."
"He'd run around the castle flipping all of the maids' skirts, telling lewd jokes, and being an absolute terror. One day he decided to tease me and make me cry, and Miss Nicolette showed up with her practice staff, threatening to, um... bash his skull in if he didn't stop."

>[1/2]
>>
>>27929414
It's partially that. Partially that he kind of gets why the princess acts the way she does. If you look at the flashback he had almost the same relationship with Citrine that he currently has with the princess. Overwhelming niceness to a person who doesn't think they deserve it.

It's intrusive of us to just immediately say "so why don't you guys hang out anymore?" It's rude, and presumptuous, to boot. We've been here a week and some change.

Rather, once the third story is told, we should approach like this:

>We smile at our friends. "You all sure have a lot of history together. We should do this sort of thing more often."

This prompts them with an opportunity to restart their friendship without butting in on their personal lives. It gets them to ask themselves why they drifted apart at 5cm a second, and gives them a chance to stop it.

More likely someone else put glue in the lieutenant's helm. I don't see us screwing around all that much after leaving poor fishing village.

"Ok, I got one. So a friend and I had a bet going on. He said 'Reinhold, you rogue, I don't believe you'd be able to beat me in a race.' To which I replied, 'Sir, you know damn well that I could outrun you any day.' So then we decided to wager who could make it up to the fallen tree in the forest and back to the village. Loser got to do what the winner asked. Well, of course we ran, but I wasn't expecting to lose by such a large margin. At any rate, he had that annoying grin of his plastered across his face and set about the terms of his victory. Well, he didn't quite think it through, but we agreed that I'd get him something within my price range, something that would cost 5 or 6 copper pieces. Well, fair enough, but I decided to be a poor sport about it. See, I bought a cheap pie, probably not worth even 3 copper coins, but all the same, I brought it to him and he seemed pleased. Then I told him that I was charging him 6 pieces for it. After all, he said 'cost'. You should have seen the look on his face. Of course, the strangling commenced soon after, but it was totally worth it.

I suspect that, after running into Citrine, Nicolette, Sylvie, and Melanie already know enough about our childhood not to inquire further -- and after the incident in the ballroom, the Princess is unlikely to be indelicate enough to ask directly.

"Heh, you seem to get cake every time you punch someone in the face," you say.
"N- not really..." Sylvie laughs nervously.
"How are you able to resist doing it all the time?"
"Because I don't want to get fat from constantly eating," she replies, sticking her tongue out at you.
"Bah, she wouldn't get fat," Nicolette says, "Gaining weight would just turn her into a giant pile of muscles like Vincent."

"Umm, I just thought of a story!" Sylvie says as she devours a few more cupcakes.
"As long as it's not about THAT..." Nicolette shoots her an angry glance.
"Don't worry, I won't talk about that... or the other thing," she says with a wicked grin.

"So a few years ago," Sylvie begins, "all the maids were going on about a ghost. Stuff would get moved... messes would get cleaned up... someone would ask for something and it would just appear... that kind of thing."
"Ha, I remember that!" Nicolette says, laughing.
"Oh no, not this story..." Melanie covers her face with her hands.
"Melanie was especially scared, so she absolutely refused to go anywhere by herself... and one day, she convinced me to go around with her as she took care of her work."

"So we were wandering castle together, and then my mother asked Melanie to get her some book from the castle so we were searching around the library..." Sylvie says as she cuts herself another piece of cake.
"I have an idea of where this one's going," you say.
"...and just as we were about to give up, the book was sitting right there on a table, plain as day. We looked all around but there was no sign of anyone, so Melanie demanded that we hurry out of there as fast as we could. And just before we got to the door, we heard a voice saying that Melanie dropped something.'

"Please, Miss sylvie... it's not that funny..." Melanie says, still covering her face.
"Melanie turned around and saw Gerhard standing there and screamed SO HARD that everyone in that wing of the castle heard and then she fainted!" Sylvie laughs. "Gerhard had just started working in the castle as a butler a few months before, so he wasn't very used to the way that things went... and I guess he scared a lot of people."

>[2/?]

What about that story we dreamed about?

It's gonna end up being sad, isn't it?

Gerhard is an amazing butler. Things just get done.

Reinhold stayed at the brothel until he ran away the year he joined the army. He was 13 when he joined, the story took place years before then.

Still though, I think it was a hint about Reinhold's sword.
>>
>>27929942
They die. They don't come back. Rienholdt is too scared to leave. They just wanted to fuck us.
>>
>>27929942
Probably something like they visited a couple more times taught him some techniques then went off and died somewhere. But that's really dark so to make it less dark his sword gets sent back to us right before we join the army or something.

That sword they were talking about, arguing who would be chosen to take it, they probably got it then died and left the sword to Reinhold.
>>
After a few more stories, the pastries and tea finally run out and everyone starts to get up so they can get back to their schedules.

"It sounds like you all have quite the history with each other," you say. "We should do this again some time."
"Yes, it was really nice to see the three of you talking again," Melanie says with a warm smile.
"Yeah, I suppose this wasn't -so- bad..." Nicolette says begrudgingly. "Guess now I have something else for my old man to nag me about..."
"Umm, yes! Thank you for the delicious cakes, Reinhold!" Sylvie says happily. "And you too, Mari- I mean, Princess! Thanks for setting all of this up!"

Princess Marianne slowly turns to Sylvie, a wistful smile on her face.

"...you know, you don't have to call me by my title..." she mumbles.
"Hm?" Sylvie replies. "Did you say something?"
"What I mean is..." she sighs, "...we're still friends, right?"
"Eh- O- Of course!" Sylvie stammers.
"Then it's okay for you to call me by my name."

Princess Marianne then turns to you.

"...I suppose you count as my friend as well, so the same goes for you if you want," she says, blushing.

Something simple like this. All this "on the job" talk is redundant and obvious. No need to bring it up.

Only when we are inside the castle and around friends though. If there is a stranger, or some official business and the like, we call her princess.

Because there will be times when we're alone with her and still on the job.

I have class in the morning so I'm calling it a night here, guys.
The entire thread was taken up by one event but it was still fun so yay.

Might do another thread tomorrow, depending on how long certain things run for. If not, it'll be the usual LATE Saturday night/wee hours of Sunday morning.
And as always, thanks for playing!
