"So how do you compete with schools like Pravda and Black Forest?" You ask Kay earnestly, as you walk along the rows of Shermans. "I mean, you can outnumber them, but how do you attack a Tiger II or Joseph Stalin tank with Shermans and not just only survive, but take them out?" It's actually something you've always wondered about Saunders- how a school using Shermans was capable of competing with defeating superior German and Russian tanks.

You are Yukari Akiyama, Panzer IV loader and spy for the school of Oorai and you're walking and talking with Kay, the captain of rival team Saunders' senshado team. You're pretty sure she thinks you're a student here, and assumption you're perfectly willing to let her have.

"Well, just like when the Americans defeated Germany, it's not just about superior numbers..." She explains walking along with you. "Those numbers have to count for something other than kill-marks on the enemy's barrel." She stops to expect the 76mm gun barrel of a Sherman. "Whenever a tank is fighting us, we make sure that we can fight them one at a time, while they're fighting us five at a time. So we do a lot of work to fragment enemy forces into chunks that we can oppose five- or ten-to-one."

"Divide and conquer..." You muse.

"Exactly!" She says, patting your shoulder.

"Well, what about the other teams?" You say, fishing for a bit more information. "Have you put any thought into how you'll fight Anzio or schools that don't use a few large tanks?" It's a pretty good question, and a natural extension of the conversation.

"Well, Anzio's never been a huge issue- tankettes just don't have the guns to take my Shermans in a fair fight." Kay brags. "Same with Maginot, but I don't think they'll be making it past Black Forest in the first round." She says, thinking. "Oorai, though..." She stops to think. "They're just getting back into senshado so I honestly don't know much about what they're running."

You decide to give her a line and see if she bites. "I heard they have a Pershing." You say.

"I've heard." She says smiling. "American crew, and they're guys- that's definately not something you see every day." She says as she tests the track tension of another Sherman with her boot. "Still, I wouldn't bet on them being as good as Naomi." She nods. "I think we'll be fine, though." She looks off down the line of Shermans. "So, we've got a meeting here in a few minutes- confidential of course." She says, escorting you to the door.

The meeting is only going to take an hour or two, not a few days.

Just drop the camera, go off to do something else on the ship, then pop back sometime later like after hours with an excuse, say a sign up form to transfer into Senshado, then pick up the camera before getting out of there.
>>
You smile apologetically. "I understand." You say, allowing her to escort you out the door. "Good luck in the tournement, Kay!" You say. Waving goodbye to your new friend.

You need a Saunders uniform so you can get back in there- Saunders has an enormous senshado team, nearly a hundred active crewmembers with countless support and reserve crews, easily the largest senshado program in the country. So if you're careful you might be able to just blend in with the crowd.

You ask around, and the girls you meet all readily help you find a reasonably well-fitted Saunders uniform. After taking a few minutes to change and make sure your spy camera and microphone are all properly connected and have a good view, you make your way to Saunders' panzer facility.

There's already a steady stream of girls milling about and filtering inside. You simply make yourself look like you belong, greeting people warmly when they make eye contact, but avoiding conversation- something that gets a lot more difficult when you here the girls start talking about how bad a tank the Panther was-

You'd like nothing more than to tell them that the Panther was an excellent design that was years ahead of its time, but was hamstringed as a tank by poor manufacturing, lack of effective maintainance and poorly trained crews. But you managed to bite your tongue- you can't bring too much attention to yourself now.

It does take long before you manage to filter into the meeting space, already set up with countless chairs for the team in an area that had to be half the size of Oorai's entire hanger. You avoid the chairs, though, and find a place against the back wall- you're thankful you aren't the only one, with a number of older veteran tankers (You can always tell the old hands...) leaning casually against the wall while the younger, more enthusiastic crewmembers shuffle around to find seating.

"Good morning Saunders!" Kay calls out with a wide grin, and the crowd echos the friendly greeting back to her- you do your best to keep up. Kay shakes her head and looks at the unimpressed, short-haired girl next to her. "Did they say something Naomi?"

Naomi continues looking unimpressed and shrugs as Kay continues. "I SAID 'GOOD MORNING SAUNDERS!'" Kay nearly shouts, and the crowd echos back, their voices loud enough to dislodge a small amount of dust from the rafters. "Alright, so, as some of you have heard and some have even seen for yourselves, the brackets for the Fall Tournement have been posted..." There's a murmur in the crowd as Kay. "It would seem our first victi-I mean OPPONENTS" She says with a wink and a smile to her audiance. "Are going to be Oorai Highschool!"

There's some confused muttering in the crowd. "Oorai? I didn't know they even had tanks!" The veteran next to you scoffs.

"Hey, hey..." Kay says, quieting the crowd. "I know- knew school right? Well, we don't know a lot about them and that makes things interesting." Kay says. "First of all, there are rumors that they've managed to get at least one heavy tank- a Pershing." There's a hushed murmur among the crowd. "Hey! Don't worry! Pershing ain't anything new to us- no more than a Kuromuro Tiger or a Pravda Eye-Ess!" She says. "And they go down just fine if you fight smart."

FUCK YOU, WE DON"T SOUND LIKE THE MOVIE FARGO.
>>
You listen to Kay's briefing intently as the chatter dies down a bit. "So, that being said, we don't know how good they are as a team. We know they've got a heavy hitter, and from what I've heard they've got an Ex-Kuromuro as captain. So we're gonna treat this fight like we'd treat any against Pravda or Kuromuromine- we're gonna train, we're gonna drill and we're gonna fight them like it's the finals." She says. "And if they turn out to not be a challenge we'll just play around with 'em like we do Anzio. And then steamroll them." She says and the crowd breaks into a laugh.

"Every year." She says, her smile breaks into a grin. The crowd laughs louder. "Last... Six years running?" She begins to quiet the crowd down. "Unfortunately though, Big Beautiful over there won't be read in time for Oorai." She says, throwing a glance over at the T28. The crowd moans a bit. "I know, believe me I want to see that One-Oh-Five go off as badly as any of you but..." She says, holding up a hand. "We're going to keep it on the roster and hopefully it'll be ready by the time we come up against Pravda or Kuromuromine." She says, grinning at her crews. "I guess it'll just have to remain our little secret until then, eh?"

"Now, back to Oorai..." She says, pulling a remote control from her pocket. "First round is open to up to fifteen tanks so we're going to use fifteen tanks!" She says. "We don't know what sort of strategy that Kuromuro captain of theirs is going to use, so we're gonna play it a bit cautious and see what we're up against." She nods to the short haired girl on her right. "Naomi is gonna be shooting for the Firefly, so we're going to need a strong defensive perimeter- as long as we keep her in the game and she can take that M26 of theirs out of the game."

They'll be kingfishing, for the most part. The 76s on the M4s are nothing to sneeze at, but they'll be (quite smartly) going to be focusing on Grizzly first. So if we can knock out that Firefly early on, we'll have the run of the field...unless we get flanked.

Strategy discussion, go! Gotta go back to the 'chives and see what Miho was saying about countering that strategy.

In any case, without looking at that, I'd say that we've gotta keep all our tanks moving in big groups. Kay said before how they use wolf pack tactics to get enemy tanks on their own, so the best way to counter that is to make sure we don't get separated.

Thinking how to counter their numbers, though. What if they come at us in one big rush?
>>
>>27928910
We try to hole up and make them take casualties to get at us.

BJ can take their frontal shots except for the Firefly.
>>
>>27928910
>Thinking how to counter their numbers, though. What if they come at us in one big rush?
Scatter, and try to either outmaneuver or hide from them. Try to get behind them and sow chaos in their line.

On an individual level, start popping off rounds at the ones armed with 76mm guns and the Firefly.
>>
>>27928910
Presumably we have range over them so if they Zerg us then use the Stug and Blackjack to pick them off as they come.

Smaller tanks should aim for the tracks. If we're being overwhelmed then leave a rear guard while everyone hauls ass out of there.

BJ made some changes. They can deploy 25 tanks in the finals in this quest too, based on what Miho said what happened in the past tourneys.
>>
>>27928946
They've got the numbers to spend on us though, and we don't have the firepower to take them all on.

Hmm. They seem overconfident, so a crazy plan here.
One: we use their own tactics against them. If I were them, I'd be splitting my team up into hunter-killer groups who are roaming around in cooperation with each other to separate and pick off tanks from our group. We keep our tanks together, and ambush their groups.
Two: before they can quickly react, we need to carve a line through their battlegroup and take down their flag. While they're in scattered groups looking for us and trying to separate us, we focus all our firepower on one point and try and get to the centre of their formation.

I don't think it's a great plan, because it relies on us knowing where their flag tank is. But I do think that the best counter to their divide-and-conquer tactics is to focus our firepower in one place and destroy their groups when they try to split us up.

If they do end up adapting to that strategy, though, we'd be pretty easy to outmanoeuvre with their superior numbers. I don't have any follow up strategies.

The Chi-nu isn't a shitty 1929 equivalent FT-17 rip off tankette, though. It's kinda alright.

At least it doesn't look shit. The Vz. 38 is my favourite tank of the early-war. The Czechs knew what they were doing, and the Chi-nu is pretty much an upsized and upgunned version.

IIRC, someone described the Chi-nu as an equivalent to early model Shermans, though of course by the time they were made we already had easy eights, fireflies and jumbos.

You stay quiet. looking around as the girls of Saunders pay rapt attention to the screen. Kay continues speaking. "Unfortunately, we won't have any major urban areas to play with, but there's plenty of forests and hills." She says, pressing a button so that a massive powerpoint slide of the battleground's map shows up on screen. "Plenty of line-of-sight issues, which is good for our M4s, but bad for the Firefly." She shrugs. "Bad for the Pershing too, I guess."

Kay basically unfolds the major parts of her strategy, and you've got to hand it to her- she's no dummy. She gives a tremendous amount of flexibility to her individual commanders, trusting them to inform her decisions on strategy. That being said there is an overall strategy and her crews are trained well enough to recognize that and know where they need to fit into it. But things are still fairly vague overall- you get the feeling that Kay does most of her planning on the fly, prefering flexiblity to precision.

For a while, as you listen to her raport with her crews, asking even the green commanders their input, she gets to the juicy bits. "So, as for our line-up..." She says, smiling as she knows the team wants to know who's fighting. "We're going to have Unit Zero-One "Firefly", Units Nine through Thirteen: M4A3s, Units Eighteen through Twenty-Two: M4A2s. Arisa, you'll be taking the M4A1 as the flag tank, of course. Then Units Twenty-Nine, Thirty and Thirty One, E8s. You guys are on support duty for the Firefly!"

You're almost about to weep with joy when the veteran girl besides you calls out. "Hey, what about us Jumbos, eh?" And then Kay looks right at you.

"Relax, just keeping you guys in reserve for the..." As soon as you see Kay's gaze swaying your way you react instantly, folding over to tie your shoes and praying that she doesn't see you. "Wait a second... What are you doing back here?" She shouts. "I said this meeting was confidential!" She points at you and you stand up straight, trying to look confused. "What's your name anyway?!" Kay says, clearly annoyed now.

Crap. What's your name? NAME! Give her something!

"Uhm..." You gulp. "Sgt. Oddball, ma'am!" You shout, saluting crisply. Oh god, that has got to be the dumbest thing you've ever said, Yukari. And that's actually saying something for you!

Someone further up finally puts a few numbers together. "SPY!" The girl next to you looks over at you surprised but immediately steps away, seemingly afraid that being too close to you might implicate her as well. More and more girls are craning their heads back to look at you and they're all realising that nobody really knows who you are.

"A spy?!" Another girl echos.

Well crap.

Yeah yeah, I'm here. I promise nothing except an attempt at making it good. Feel free to comment, since I know you will anyway.

>Story start.

>She stands there in just a slightly oversize shirt and shorts, her hair down and an uncharacteristic nervous look on her face.
>She looks beautiful as what little light there is manages to catch on her face, highlighting her features for just a split second.
>”Need something?” you ask, wondering what she could want.
> “W-would you…could I…I mean…” she says, a distinct lack of concrete words starts coming from her mouth.
>You wait; knowing that whatever it is she’s trying to say won’t be helped by pressure.
>Finally she takes a deep breath and manages to get out, “…I know I said I’d sleep on the couch but… I want to stay close to you tonight…I don’t think I could sleep otherwise.”
> “Of course,” you say, moving over as far as you can and lifting the sheet so she can get in with you.
>>
>>27930533
>Giving you a small smile of gratitude she shuts the door and crawls in beside you, immediately moving to grasp you like she was on the couch, her head resting on your chest as you put your arms protectively around her.

>Even as she does this you can tell something is up, she’s still a little tense, not relaxing like she was before.

>After a few minutes of this you look down at her, just as she looks up, your faces merely inches away.

> “S-sorry,” she says, turning a little read and looking down, “You first.”

>You shake your head at her nervousness, “I was simply going to ask why you’re so tense.”

>She turns even redder at that, muttering something that sounds like, “Only you…”

>But then she speaks up, her voice just managing to reach your ears as she pushes herself back against your chest.

> “I just wanted a shot you know,” she whispers, “Just a shot at that happiness I had back when I won those local senshado tournaments in middle-school.”

> “I tried so hard,” there is a little bit of a hiccup in her voice now as she grips your shirt, “So hard to win just one tournament, just once I wanted it to be like the good old days and share the happiness with everyone again.”
>>
>>27930550
> “But you can’t win with just spirit, as much as you try. And underpowered tanks don’t usually win matches, much less tournaments.”

> “But you never cared about that,” she said looking up at you again, a small smile on her face “You were always there, even when we both knew the match was a loss before it started.”

>You open your mouth there to say something, but she puts a finger over your lips.

> “Please, not now” she asks softly, vulnerably

>You nod, closing your mouth to let her talk.

>She smiles at you again, reminding you how cute she is when she’s not pretending to be a little dictator.

> “So many pizza’s and so much pasta,” she says, gripping you tighter, “And I never thought I’d won anything.”

>You look down at her quizzically, wondering where she’s going with this.

>She looks up at you and laughs, moving a hand to caress your cheek.

> “You silly,” she says softly, “I’ve won the most important thing of all.”

>Your eyes go up at this, mildly shocked at what she’s saying. Sure, you liked her but you never thought…

>Apparently taking this negatively she stops, getting nervous again.

> “I-I mean if you’d want someone who’s such a loser as...”
>>
>>27930563
>You don’t let her finish the sentence, moving in and taking her lips in a gentle yet firm kiss.

>It doesn’t last long, but you try to put all of your feelings for her into it, to let her know you’ll always be there for her.

>As you break off, you can see her face is red and you wonder…

> “T-that was my first kiss,” she mutters, face nearing the color of the wine you two had snuck a glass of that one time after a victory.

> “Was it a bad one?” you ask a soft smile on your face.

> “I-I don’t know,” she says, turning her face more towards yours, “You’ll have to do it again.”

>You oblige her, moving in for another kiss. This one is longer and more passionate, with her moving her lips back against yours.

>You break off and look at her, cocking your eyebrow in question.

> “A-again,” she gets out, her voice now a little breathy.
>>
>>27930575
>This kiss goes on for what seems like forever, the two of you holding each other close as you take turns exploring your partner’s mouth.

>It only ends when she breaks it off and looks down, turning red again.

> “Y-you…” she stammers, glancing down and then back up.

>You what? You look down and then notice what she means, though it’s because she wiggles against “it” and not because you can actually look at it.

> “Sorry,” you mutter, managing to turn a little red yourself.

> “I-it’s ok,” she says, looking up at you.

>“D-do you really want to…I mean, with me?” she asks, her face nervous and blushing intensely.

>You take your hand and stroke her face softly. “Yes,” you say firmly, “But only if you’re ready.”

>In response she kisses you again, hard, while starting to stroke her hands along your chest.

Such as? The sloped armour was literally ripped off from the T-34. Hell one of the other proposed Panther designs was virtually a carbon copy of the T-34.

And I challenge you to find a modern tank that has a direct design lineage from the Panther.

And the French reported on the smoke grenade thing when they were operating Panthers after the war. The Germans noted a tendency to engine fires too.

It was a good tank, I'm not denying that but it was hardly years ahead of its time.

>Such as? The sloped armour was literally ripped off from the T-34. Hell one of the other proposed Panther designs was virtually a carbon copy of the T-34.
So the russian design team behind the T-34 where the ONLY ONES who considered sloped armor? Please... Just because two things look vaguely similar, does not mean that one is totally a rip-off of the second.

Also, what does
>And I challenge you to find a modern tank that has a direct design lineage from the Panther.
have to do with anything. Of course you won't find it, the germans lost the war and basically had to cut all weapons design for a bit.
Also, does ANY tank from WW2 have direct lineage to the modern day, aside from maybe some designs from the T-34 being maintained in the shittier modern (and exported) russian tanks?
>>
>>27932028
>So the russian design team behind the T-34 where the ONLY ONES who considered sloped armor?

THAT'S what you take offence with? Are you retarded? Are you always denying the truth?
>>
>>27931983
>And I challenge you to find a modern tank that has a direct design lineage from the Panther.

French AMX-13, which is still in use in various parts of the world. The 75mm gun it uses is a direct copy of the Panther's.
>>
>>27932028
>So the russian design team behind the T-34 where the ONLY ONES who considered sloped armor?

T-34 shows up in 1941. Germans say 'this sloped armour stuff is awesome!' (Compare previous German tanks-tends to be a lot of flat plating), design a few tanks based off the design-one of which basically is the T-34 in Feldgrau (VK3002DB-look it up, it was a real design) and start producing the winner. Boom, Panther.

>Of course you won't find it, the germans lost the war and basically had to cut all weapons design for a bit.
And when West Germany started building tanks again did they build off the Panther when they were making the Leopard? No, because it was a dead end.

>Also, does ANY tank from WW2 have direct lineage to the modern day, aside from maybe some designs from the T-34 being maintained in the shittier modern (and exported) russian tanks?

Okay, perhaps 'modern' might be overdoing it. How a bout 'postwar'?

Compare: Pershing to Patton (And arguably Abrams)
Or Centurion, Chieftain, Challenger.

Also I'm pretty sure that the 'export' and home use Russian tanks share a common ancestor in the T-44/54. Pretty sure it continues to the modern Russian tanks, to boot.
>>27932112
>French AMX-13, which is still in use in various parts of the world. The 75mm gun it uses is a direct copy of the Panther's.

The gun? AKA one of the interchangeable components that was not at all unique to the design? I'm talking about the design as a whole.
>>
>>27932234
>AKA one of the interchangeable components that was not at all unique to the design?

That's half the damn Panther.

The Wheels were designed to be standardised and directly interchangeable with those of the Tiger 1 E and Tiger II.

The Maybach HL230 engine it had was used in pretty much every German Heavy ever, along with a lot of the same drivetrain components.

Functionally, the Panther gave to modern tanks the genesis of the MBT concept, albeit in primitive form. It was fast, Well armed, and well-armoured. Despite constant rumour and myth, it had only slightly less operational downtime than the Panzer IV or other smaller Medium tanks; whether due to lack of spare parts or mechanical reliability. - it's operational reliability was consistently within within five percent of the Panzer IV on both fronts in 1944.

The T-34, while contributing some design considerations to the Panther, was not similarly influential. As you said, modern Russian MBTs are more influenced by the T-44 and T-54/55, which are post-Pantehr and thus can be argued to have been influenced by it's abilities.

>No, because it was a dead end.
No, because several decades had past post-bellum, and thus it was more efficient, from a design standpoint, to start from scratch and take cues from contemporary designs, rather than a decades-old machine.

>(And arguably Abrams)
The Design paradigms used in the Abrams are so far removed from the Patton and Pershing that even calling it "arguable" is hilarious.
>>
>>27932354
>The Wheels were designed to be standardised and directly interchangeable with those of the Tiger 1 E and Tiger II.

And a pain in the arse to replace, apparently.

>Functionally, the Panther gave to modern tanks the genesis of the MBT concept, albeit in primitive form. It was fast, Well armed, and well-armoured.

I'll give you well-armed, but the armour on the sides wasn't so great. As I understand it it was easily penetrated by the 75mm on a Sherman.

>The T-34, while contributing some design considerations to the Panther, was not similarly influential. As you said, modern Russian MBTs are more influenced by the T-44 and T-54/55, which are post-Pantehr and thus can be argued to have been influenced by it's abilities.

I'd say that the Centurion was the genesis of the MBT, which had started development in 1943. And for the T-44, that also started development in 1943, and if you look at the two side-by-side, I'm not sure how you get the idea it was influenced by the Panther. The silhouette is completely different. And the Pershing came from the t20 and its siblings, circa 1942. The actual design of the vehicles were independent of the Panther, for the most part.

I never said the Panther was a bad tank, just it shouldn't be wanked over the way that it is.
>>
>>27932520
>I'll give you well-armed, but the armour on the sides wasn't so great. As I understand it it was easily penetrated by the 75mm on a Sherman.

No different to the side armour of any other tank in those days - even now, side armour is somewhat weaker than frontal armour in most designs.

The Panther's side armour was still tougher than the Frontal armour of many tanks still in use at the time. It's only "Not so great" in the context of ridiculous beasts like the Tiger I and Tiger II.

>And a pain in the arse to replace, apparently.
Time-consuming, yes, but the interleaved design was how they managed to get the ground pressure of those things low enough to dance like ballerinas over ground far lighter Shermans would bog in. There's always a tradeoff.
>>
>>27932520
>I never said the Panther was a bad tank, just it shouldn't be wanked over the way that it is.

>>
>>27932520
>'m not sure how you get the idea it was influenced by the Panther.
It doesn't have to be direct technical ripping to influence it. Rather the Tactical and operational paradigms it was designed around.

That said;
>I'd say that the Centurion was the genesis of the MBT, which had started development in 1943. And for the T-44, that also started development in 1943,
Parallel developments happen. In this case, the Panther happened slightly earlier, and because it actually saw meaningful combat and usage on the Tactical and Operational levels during the war. Unlike T-44s which didn't ever do shit and Centurions that didn't see action until the MBT concept as already well established.

The Panther actually being operational and experienced in practice meant that it was the Panther's performance, abilities and usage that highlighted the need for a Universally capable tank, and while the Centurion and T-44 (and Pershing, sort of) started development concurrently with the Panther's active deployment, the practical experiences offered by facing the Panther (And operating captured examples) quite clearly influenced the design and composition of the Cent/T44 during their developmental stages.

Practical combat experience is worth a billion theoretical design bureaus.
>>
>>27932635
Just a reminder, the Tiger and Tiger II were both evolutionary dead ends because, for all their power, they were horrible war machines. Both required very specific circumstances to be effective, were gas guzzlers(something Germany couldn't afford) and both were maintenance whores that would put F-14's to shame(there were never more than 20 Tiger II's operational at a time, usually closer to 10).

Don't get me wrong, when they worked and were in the right circumstances, they were pretty beastly machines, but the problem is that they rarely got to be used in that capacity.
