You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

After a lovely day of emotional breakdowns, you escorted the Princess to her room and then headed down to the training hall to blow off some steam. While there, you challenged Nicolette to a duel... and won!

Afterwards, you headed over to the kitchen, where Nicolette and Sylvie told you about your predecessor... you kind of want to kill him.

But that's enough drama for one day, now is the time for FOOD.

>Guard Rank: CAT
>Congratulations, you are now an annoying CAT!
>Not one of those fancy pedigree cats, but rather a mangy stray.
>The Princess now kind of likes you a little!
>But she still doesn't consider you to be a person.

You are hungry.

So very, very hungry.

And there is food in front of you... it is time to CONSUME.

All of life's worries seem to melt away as you messily devour all of the chicken that you see. Washing it all down with a long chug of magically-cooled water, you breathe a long sigh of satisfaction.

"Good eating, huh?" Nicolette says to you with a chuckle.
"Yes it was," you reply.
"Well, I guess it's time for me to head off..."

Nicolette gets up from her seat and stretches.

"You're busy tonight?" you ask.
"Yeah, Guillaume was nagging me about some sword trick he wanted to show me so I'm headed out there for a while," Nicolette replies.
"Guess I'll head out too," Sylvie says as she finishes off the last of her chicken. "I went kind of overboard during today's fight so I have barely enough left in me for one usage of Starlight Wing to get home. "

It's kind of overdoing it. There is such a thing as too nice. Marianne kind of feels really bad about how she treats us compared to how we treat her. We've done enough at the moment and she needs time and space. We should back off on just showering her in kindness, especially since not only does she have paranoia and self-esteem related issues regarding how we treat her, but she doesn't like people who don't have a backbone and let her walk all over them.

She messed up and overreacted and we apologized for what we did wrong even though we got the most hurt out of the whole thing. It's her turn to be nice to us.

I'm saying this as a Marie fag.

In terms of events, it's possible. Inviting Melanie along on the trip into town had a TON of effects on later events, the most recent of which being that she was able to defuse Marianne's breakdown by telling her about Citrine.

Outcomes, every time. Not hanging out with someone today means that you can't hang out with them today, etc.

Routes, potentially. Not inviting Melanie along would have lost you the meidoroute forever, for example. I'll try and make it clear through context as to whether a choice will lead to a routelock, though.

"Aw, man..." Nicolette says, smiling guiltily. "Shit, now you're embarassing me."
"Umm, I'm happy to have met you as well!" Sylvie says, blushing slightly.
"Yeah, it's cool to be able to hang around someone besides Sylvie who isn't scared of me," Nicolette says.

"And if either of you needs my help with anything, feel free to ask. I'll do whatever I can," you say to them.
"Well, in that case..." Nicolette smiles evilly, "...I'm sure that Sylvie would love it if you helped her into her party dress when we get to Marconetti. It's kind of hard to get those things on by yourself, you know..."

Upon hearing Nicolette's little comment, Sylvie turns beet-red.

"NICOLETTE I THOUGHT I WARNED YOU ABOUT MAKING JOKES LIKE THAT" she shouts, trying to punch Nicolette.
"Sorry, I couldn't help myself!" Nicolette says, laughing as she runs away from Sylvie.
"GET BACK HERE I NEED TO PUNCH YOU"

You look on with an embarassed grin as Sylvie chases Nicolette out of the kitchen.

With all do respect, this is a shitty philosophy to take. Few fuckups are too great to come back from, and just not inviting someone (especially when she didn't seem to want to come) would be over the top. This isn't a VN, after all, and we can't play it through repeatedly.

You're kind of really curious as to how the Princess is doing... but bothering her right now is probably not the best thing to do. So instead, you decide to look for Melanie, the person who would most likely know how she's doing.

You wander the halls for a good twenty minutes, looking inside every open room that you walk past, scouring the hallways and stairwells... it's pretty hard finding someone when you have no idea what their schedule is.

But just a you're about to give up and go see what Niklaus is up to instead, you spot Melanie just as she turns a corner! Hurrying up to find her before she disappears, you run around the corner and tap her on the shoulder.

"Hey, Melanie?" you say.
"Kyaa!" Melanie shrieks in fright, and then turns to face you. "M- Mr. Reinhold? What are you doing out here?"
"Looking for you, actually," you reply. "Sorry for scaring you like that."
"Um- no, it's my fault for being jumpy," she says, bowing. "So, what did you need from me?"

"I was wondering if you knew how the Princess was doing," you say.
"Oh. I see," Melanie says as she adjusts her glasses. "I was just checking on her, she seems to have cried herself to sleep."
"...oh," you say, now feeling kind of bad.
"She bounces back quickly, though. Don't worry, I'm sure she'll be fine tomorrow. And you don't have to worry about me mentioning a thing about this entire debacle to anyone, the King just thinks that she's in one of her moods."

"Sorry for running off earlier, my nerves were kind of shot too," you say.
"You don't have any need to apologize," Melanie replies with a smile. "I could tell that that entire incident was hard on both of you. Are you feeling better now?"
"Hm? Uh, yeah. Pretty much."
"That's great to hear!"
"By the way, what were you going to suggest before, when you stopped yourself midsentence?"

It takes a few seconds for Melanie to figure out what exactly you meant by that, and then she starts laughing.

"Oh, I was going to offer to accompany you on a walk outside the castle grounds for a bit so that you could clear your mind," Melanie replies, laughing nervously. "That's what I always do when the stress of castle life gets to me, and it seemed that you needed it... but I guess swinging your sword around helped with that?"
"Heh. Yeah, for the most part. Thanks for the consideration, though."

"Oh yeah," you say as you snap your fingers. "Before everything went all nuts, were were talking about congratulating Sylvie on her win against Niklaus... I ended up asking her to show up when we have tea tomorrow afternoon."
"Oh, that would be wonderful!" Melanie says happily. "The Princess is sure to enjoy that, she's been so depressed lately about drifting apart from Nicolette and Sylvie..."
"So I was wondering what to do about cakes or something, since I know that the Princess likes sweets."
"Oh- um- I'd be happy to take care of that! What did you have in mind?"

Baking a cake is a perfectly valid choice at this juncture.

1) This is animu/vn quest. Every other or third animu and vn has some sort of cooking or baking episode.
2) It could be a good excuse to get the girls together to have some fun.
3) It's a bit of harmless fun.
4) Survival training for when we don't have cake.
5) Ties in well with all the cake we've seen so far: the Wilhelm's, all the tea-times, and there was that episode in Sylvie's kitchen. Turkey legs are cooking, right?

Because etymologies don't need to make contemporary sense, only historical sense. Word meanings change and sometimes fork and diverge into two polysemous parts of one word that have different semantics but the same origins. In your post you said "castle staff": if they're staff, why aren't they long, brown and woody? Well, because "staff" used to mean "support", which then diverged into two meanings for the same word, "people who support an establishment" and "a piece of wood (holding things up)", plus most probably other meanings too.

"Nicolette's mother can cook, maybe we could stop by there?" you suggest.
"Wha- Miss Nicolette's house!? A- are you sure, I don't know if-" Melanie stammers.
"Well, Ariane was really nice the last time I was there..."
"If... if you're sure about that, I suppose..." she says, hiding her blushing face behind her hands. "Um... meet me at the gate, I'll go fetch a carriage!"

Still trying to cover her face, Melanie scurries off. You then proceed to the gate, saying hello to the guards stationed there as you wait. Before long, you see a carriage approach, pulled by a green-scaled behemoth. A door then opens, and Melanie hops out and waves at you.

"Everything's ready, Mr. Reinhold!" she shouts.
"Alright, thanks!" you reply as you jog towards the carriage.

Melanie steps aside for you to enter first, and then you help her into the carriage. After you get situated, she calls for the driver to head out.

I really don't think baking Marianne a cake right after she tried to kill us is such a great idea.

Doing it in Niklaus' lab sounds completely mad, although hilarious.

Well its not "for Sylvie", its "to celebrate Sylvie punching that asshole in the face and winning". Subtle but important difference.

Also, ya know, everyone is going to be eating it, so when it comes to the important part of cake-having (the CONSUMING) everyone is equal.

"So, uh..." you turn to Melanie. "...what do you think of them?"
"Hm? Who?" Melanie asks.
"The Princess, Sylvie, Nicolette... them."
"Eh? Um... what do I think... you mean my opinion of them?"
"Yeah, pretty much. I was just kind of curious."

"Well, um..." Melanie giggles as she adjusts her glasses, "The Princess is rather high-strung, but she's a kind girl at heart. She's just a bit difficult, that's all... she's opened up a lot more since you've arrived, thouh. And Miss Sylvie... she's rather, um... violent? I suppose she gets it from her father, but her mother is rather forceful as well. She's still very nice, though."

"And Miss Nicolette..." Melanie begins, "She's very... rough? She's a lot like her father in that she holds things in for a long time and then blows up when she can't handle any more, but she's gotten a lot better about that since she joined the Royal Guard. And her dream of becoming a Knight in order to honor her grandfather... I think that's very sweet. From what Mr. Arnaud has said of him, he was quite a guy... it's a shame that I never got to meet him."

"It would be nice if the three of them would mend things..." Melanie sighs, "...but I suppose you're working on that," she says, winking at you.
"Heh, kind of," you reply with a chuckle.

The carriage then comes to a slow stop, and the driver knocks calls out that you've arrived at Nicolette's mansion. Opening the door, you quickly hop out and then help Melanie down.

The two of you then approach the front door of the mansion... you're kind of regretting showing up here uninvited. If Ariane happens to be forcing Nicolette to try on that dress again, she's sure to be furious... but you quickly shoo the worry from your mind.

KNOCK KNOCK

Right after you knock on the door, you wonder to yourself how exactly you're going to go about asking to borrow Ariane's kitchen. But that line of thought is cut short by the sound of gears shifting. As the door opens, you step back...

".........Reinhold? And Melanie? What are you two doing at my house?" Sir Gregory says, a look of surprise on his face.

As Sir Gregory watches on with an expression of utter delight, Nicolette swings at your face as hard as she can. You jump back just before her fist would connect with your jaw, causing Nicolette to completely lose her balance, slip, and fall on her behind.

"Oh shit, this is even better than I thought it would be!" Sir Gregory laughs as he watches his daughter scramble to her feet.
"Fucking fuck fuck FUCKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!" Nicolette screams in anger. "REINHOLD WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU HERE NOW GOD DAMN IT FUCK"
"My dear -daughter- Nico, you good friend is here to ask -my wife- Ariane's assistance in baking a cake," Sir Gregory says as he rustles her hair.

"Um, sorry for coming at such a late hour..." Melanie says, bowing.
"...and you're here too... god damn it," Nicolette says, slumping down.

"So much for secrets, eh, my adorable little -daughter-!" Sir Gregory says as he wraps his arm around Nicolette's shoulders.

"Is it really that big a deal?" you ask. "It's not like I'm going to start treating you any differently."
"Yeah, see?" Sir Gregory says, still holding onto her. "He still wants to be your friend."
"fucking hell..." Nicolette mumbles under her breath.
"I honestly just came here about a cake," you say.

"...what?" Nicolette says, shaking her father's arm off of her shoulders.
"I know it sounds kind of stupid, but we came here to ask for your mother's help in baking a cake for a tea party tommorow to celebrate Sylvie's beating Niklaus..." you say.
"God damn it, you came here for something THAT stupid?"

"Cakes and tea parties?" a voice says from behind Nicolette. "How wonderful, I'd love to help!"

Ariane practically floats up to you and gives you a big hug.

"It's wonderful to see you again, Reinhold!" Ariane says with a beaming smile. "And I see that the secret identity of my husband has gotten out..."
"Friends as good as you two don't need to keep secrets, right?" Sir Gregory says with a chuckle.

>[1/?]
>>
>>27877100
No? Because we're not the host and inviting people to others' events is the height of rudeness.
>>
>>27877087

We've come to her house to bake the cake in. I'd rather take fallout of Marianne's ire with orchestrating this little party than use Nico and her family as a disposable asset without even having her share in the spoils.
>>
>>27877088
Hmm... fair enough.

And its not like we'd get in huge trouble for inviting her (unless it somehow goes horribly wrong and ends in the two of them fighting anyway) since she does want to get closer to both of them again.

We haven't seen him get really weapons grade mad, fight, his bad side or him even throwing out spells

Vincent inspires primal terror because we can sense the fact that he is a whole different level of monster, Gregory is much more worrying because he can conceal it until he decides your life is over
>>

Gerhard is the ninja librarian. He might pass for a scary I suppose, but so could most named NPCs in the palace.

Gregory is "darker" than Vincent in terms of loud, cheerful humor, I suppose.
>>
>>27877173

Well according to the princess, nico just started avoiding her.

According to Nico, its not like they had a big fight.

It feels more like they need an excuse to try and get back together since they're both too proud to attempt the first step. Or in the princess' case, thinks she doesn't deserve nico's friendship.

I think this is a good idea

Maybe we can tell the princess that Nicolette seemed interested so we asked her to come along because she mentioned before that they all knew each other from childhood and don't see each other very often because their duties and general life doesn't overlap as much any more
>>
>>27877195
That's a fair point, a lot of places where I wanted caution the correct solution was "balls out crazy". Still, three weeks is a good period of time to start mending bridges. As long as the princess doesn't spill her spaghetti with Sylvie during the time skip we'll probably be okay.

"We came to ask your mother to help bake a cake to celebrate Sylvie's victory over Niklaus," you say.
"Wha- Sylvie? Cake?" Guillaume's eyes grow wide. "Vict- SHE BEAT NIKLAUS!? WHAT!?"
"Sh- she did? how!?" Bernaud stares at you.
"Handicap match, she was able to punch him in the face before he got bored," Sir Gregory says. "Unfortunately, I didn't get to see it happen."

"So Reinhold came here to... MOM!" he points at Ariane. "If he's gonna bake a cake for Sylvie, then I am too!"
"I wanna help!" Bernard chimes in.
"What about you, Nicolette?" Sir Gregory asks, turning to his daughter.
"Hell no. Leave me out of this," Nicolette replies, scowling.

"You two can do the taste testing!" Ariane says happily. "C'mon, everyone who's going to be cooking!" Ariane then heads to the kitchen, motioning for you to follow her.

"Wait, I didn't agree to-" Nicolette says in protest.
"Give it up, you get to eat a cake without having to put in any work," Sir Gregory says as he pulls Nicolette towards the living room. "C'mon, we'll just get in the way."

As you enter the kitchen, Ariane quickly goes to work in gathering several pans and bowls.

"Help me with these, would you Bernard?" she says, handing him a stack of metal bowls.
"Um, okay!" Bernard says as he takes them and places them in a row along a counter.
"And that's the spoons..." she hands Guillaume several large wodden spoons. "...aaand the flour, sugar, eggs..."

Taking a few minutes to gather everything together, Ariane has everything set.

"Alright, Guillaume already knows how to bake because he loves helping his mommy, so you and Bernard can go on ahead..." she says as she places a poofy chef's har and oversized apron on him.
"Imma show you how a REAL man cooks, Reinhold!" Guillaume points at you defiantly before pulling Bernard along with him to get to work.

"And that leaves us!" Ariane says, clapping her hands together. "Put these on, and we can get started!"

She tosses you and Melanie two aprons.

"Reinhold, do you have any experience in baking?" Ariane asks.
"Nope," you reply as you fumble with getting the apron on.
"Oh my... well, I guess that means that we have to be extra careful!"

She then produces a list of ingredients and hands it to Melanie.

"Reinhold's the one who'll be doing the grunt work, so you take care of the direction, okay Melanie?" Ariane says as she picks up a bag of flour.
"Okay, Mrs. Ariane!" Melanie says, holding tightly onto the list.
"And now for the hard part!"

Ariane hands you the bag of flour, and has Melanie list off the ingredients and amounts that you need. After a bunch of fumbling on your part and help from Ariane, you manage to (mostly) sucessfully measure and pour the flour and sugar into the bowl.

Though there's now kind of a mess everywhere. Wondering how Guillaume is doing, you look over at where he's working... and he's working like a MACHINE. Drooping your head in shame that you're being outdone by a little kid, you go to crack the eggs.

"Shit!" you shout as you crush it in your hand.
"Haha, you're as bad as Gregory!" Ariane laughs.

You can swear that you heard Guillaume laugh, but ignore it as you go back to work at CRACKING THEM PROPERLY. It's a lot of effort on your part to not make a horrible mess of eggshells, but you manage to get it right eventually. After pouring the oil and water and the rest of the easy stuff, you're done with this step!

"Alright, Reinhold!" Ariane says happily. "Now for the mixing!"

Working as carefully as you possibly can, you take one of the spoons and start mixing. You make a bit of a mess, but still manage to get the batter to a smooth consistency, then Ariane pours it into several pans.

"We're making two cakes. One for the teaparty and another to taste. Don't want to give someone a nasty cake, after all!" Ariane says.
"Uh, yeah... the Princess would be pissed if I brought her a cake that tasted horrible..." you say, shuddering at the thought.
"Yes, she's rather picky about her sweets," Melanie says, giggling.
"And now we bake!" Ariane says as she places your pans in the oven.

The main work out of the way, you wait.

And wait.

And wait.

Ariane passes the time with more embarassing stories of her children, much to Guillaume and Bernard's annoyance. Fortunately, Nicolette's not in the room to hear the ones about her.

After the cakes are finally done baking, you pull the pans out of the oven and place them onto the counter. Ariane then casts a spell to cool them down and you get to frosting them with icing that Ariane apparently made on the spot.

You're not even going to question when she had the time to make it while instructing you at the same time...

"Yeah, it's fucking delicious," Nicolette says through a mouthful of cake.

You breathe a long sigh of relief as you take a seat and cut yourself a piece.

"...wow," you say, genuinely surprised. "This really is good. Melanie, try some."

Naturally, what this means is that we accidentally did SOMETHING odd that made this cake the best thing we've ever tasted in our lives, but we can't figure out for the life of us what it was.

All those who tasted the horrifying miracle that is our first cake are consumed by a desire to rediscover the accident that birthed it, forsaking all other obligations in favor of a neverending pursuit of recapturing fleeting gastronomic perfection.

A cult springs up around the veneration of the immaculately preserved second cake, the one previously intended for the tea party.

"Oh yeah, Guillaume?" you say, turning to him.
"What?" Guillaume replies with a scowl.
"I'll be sure to tell Sylvie that you and Bernard were the ones who baked your cake," you say as you take another DELICIOUS bite.
"Wha- you mean you'd actually-" Guillaume stammers. "Alright, Reinhold. I accept you as my rival since you actually have a sense of honor."
"And if you want, I'd be willing to give you a few sword lessons as payment for the cake?"

Guillaume looks at you, smirking in the same way that his father does.

"I have my old man for that, I don't need you," Guillaume says. "And I refuse to be indebted to you."
"I'm touched," Sir Gregory says as he tussles his son's hair.

After some more pleasant caketime conversation, the pastries are consumed and it's time for you to head back to the castle. Ariane puts the two cakes in boxes for you, and has Nicolette help you bring them to the carriage.

"You want a ride back to the castle?" you ask as you finish putting the cakes inside the carriage.
"Nah, I'm spending the night here," Nicolette replies. "I'm still kind of pissed that YOU SHOWED UP AT MY FUCKING HOUSE UNANNOUNCED, but I guess that it was kind of nice."
"Thanks for having us," Melanie replies, bowing.
"Anyways, I guess I'll be seeing you at stupid fucking teatime... bye."

You then enter the carriage and help Melanie in, and the two of you head back to the castle.

"No, that's fine.

As the carriage rolls along, you turn to Melanie.

"Thanks for going along with all of this," you say.
"Oh, um... you're welcome!" Melanie smiles. "It was actually a lot of fun, so I think that I'm the one who should be thanking you."
"So do you think the Princess will take this whole thing well?"
"Oh, I'm sure she will. Just to know that you're being this thoughtful would be good enough, I think... the cakes are just an added bonus!" she says happily.

The carriage quickly makes it back to the castle. You carry the two cake boxes out, and Melanie waes down a nearby butler to help you out.

"I'll take these to the kitchen for safekeeping until they need to be brought out tomorrow," Melanie says. "It's supposed to be a surprise after all, and I don't think it would be a good idea to risk the Princess running into you in the halls with these boxes."
"Good point, thanks," you reply.
"Umm... thanks for everything, Mr. Reinhold. Goodnight!"

With that, Melanie and the butler hurry off to the kitchen with the cakes. As you're rather tired, you head straight to your room, taking the quickest route that you can. As you exit the staircase and head down the hallway that your room's located on, you see... Princess Marianne?

And she's standing in front of your door, looking uneasy.

"Um, good evening, Princess," you say as you approach.
"Wha-" Startled, she turns to face you and jumps back again. "G... good evening."
"You're standing in front of my room, did you need something?" you ask.
"Yes, um, no- I mean..." Flustered, the Princess thrusts a book right into your chest. "Here!"
"Uh..." you take the book and look back at the Princess. "...thank you?"
"I still feel terrible about what happened, so I thought I'd try and make it up at least a little bit by lending you one of my favorite books..."
"Oh. Um..." you look at the cover, which says 'The Legend of Alsinadra.' "Cool, thanks."

"I thought it was interesting, but tell me if you don't like it..." the Princess looks down, blushing profusely. "...good night!"

With that, she runs down the hall and into her room, slamming the door behind her. You then go into your own room and toss off your jacket, placing the book she just gave you in your desk. While you'd like to start reading it, you're completely exhausted from the day's drama.

With a sigh, you get undressed and fall on your bed, passing right out.

The most important (and only) McGuffin in our quest yet.
>>
>>27878623
Its less of an immediate plus and more of a big increase in growth potential. >>
>>27878637
Personal suffering leads to selfish/introspective behavior. Barring huge avoidant behavior(like Reinhold's selfless to a certain extent), when something's wrong with you, you focus on you. It's possible that it can convert to love points or whatever but right now she's probably too depressed and worried about her own issues to properly assess her feelings for another person.

It's kind of been her issue from the very beginning, really.

Well, male ducks are just living rape machines with spiral dicks designed to get around a female duck's vagina labyrinth that prevents them from being impregnated by said rape so I guess homosexuality is the only proper way to go for them.
