Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are LUCAS WILLIAMS, a member of the mercenary company Demons of Randgriz and a graduate from its elite TIER ONE Program. You are now part of the elite, but inexperienced WRAITH TEAM, consisting of you and your fellow classmates from training.

After a grueling year of training and quick battle to get rid of some troublesome pirates harassing Gallia's northern coast, you and Wraith Team have found yourselves transferred to the exotic land of San Salvacion, an entire ocean away from Gallia. You've been brought in to help the beleaguered country suppress the rebels that oppose its rule, as well as counter any possible Erusean aggression from the South.

Unfortunately, the action started much sooner than you thought it would when your base was ambushed literally almost the moment you set foot in it. While the attackers were repulsed, the attack has left you and your squad a bit shaken that presumably poorly armed and organized rebels could strike at the heart of San Salvacion's military power in the south so easily.

Unfortunately, it seems the situation is getting more and more complicated as more players in this conflict begin to reveal themselves, such as Emmerian special forces, Imperial weapon smugglers, unscrupulous rival mercs, and more...

After that long night of drinking, you groggily crawl your way out of your cot when the morning horn blares, signalling the beginning of yet another day. Really, you just want to stay in your tent and sleep, but something nags at you to get up anyways.

After cleaning yourself up and getting dressed, you wonder what to do today. You could always hit up Nemo for more gadgets or whatnot. Or you could go check up on Falynn and Charlotte, the latter having just recently been cleared for duty by the doctors.

Or, you could go see if Simo or Menendez have any more intel at the command tent. And you know that wherever Simo is, Morgan won't be far.

You also see Lucina stalking along top of the perimeter wall, as well as the rest of the Wraiths all milling about and taking care of various tasks.

Heck, last you checked, Reznov was still hanging around, so could even talk to him if you really wanted to.

You decide go see what Lucina was up to. Climbing up the wall, and silently cursing Falynn's decision to make it so freaking high, you manage to intercept her as she paces along the top.

"Hey, Lucina." You say as you clamber to the top.

"Oh, hello Lucas!" Lucina smiles. "This is a pleasant surprise. I normally don't see you on wall duty."

"Yeah well, I figured it'd be nice to change things up." You grin. "So how have things been going?"

"Oh, the usual, chasing off Erusean scouts trying to probe our defenses. They've been getting much bolder recently."

So anyways, I'm assuming that "the Bastion" is going to act a lot like Pavlov's House as the Erusians are going to invade soon. How should we evac. the civilians nearby or should they stay with us?

"That's not exactly what I meant, Lucina." You sigh. "I mean, like, how have things for you been going personally?"

"Hm?" Lucina blinks. "Well...nothing much, I guess."

Honestly, you're not sure what to do with this girl. Maybe you'd have to get her out of the base more often and actually interact with people.

"Lucina, have you actually been trying to make friends outside of the squad?" You ask.

"Well..."

"Tell me the truth, Lucina. You're not a good liar, either."

"Okay, so maybe I haven't exactly been 'socializing' much like you keep saying I should..." Lucina looks away, trying to hide her guilty expression.

"Come on, Lucina, if you're having trouble, you could always just ask me." You shake your head.

"Well... what should I do?" Lucina asks.

"Come on!" You take Lucina's hand. "No time to practice like now!"

"W-what?!" Lucina gasps as you pull her to the stairs.

"Don't worry, we'll start off easy. Nemo's not exactly the shining definition of 'normal', so she'll probably be pretty open minded about whatever you try."

"B-but-"

"No buts! Didn't your parents teach never to turn down a mission?"

"...yes." Lucina says, as if admitting defeat.

"Then it's settled." You grin.

You guide Lucina to Nemo's makeshift lab, ignoring all the stares you're getting along the way. It was really no secret that you were one of the few people who could boss around Lucina and not only live to tell the tale, but also get completely get away with it. You finally reach Nemo's tent and let Lucina in.

"You've been in the lab tent before, right?" You ask.

"Once or twice."

"Did anybody actually KNOW you were in the tent?"

"...no."

"Of course." You sigh.

Sure enough, as was customary for her, you see Nemo sprawled across one of her work tables, loudly snoring. You wonder if Nemo was naturally tired all the time or if she just works obscene hours.

"So, what do I do?" Lucina asks.

Lucina just looks at you like a helpless lion cub, unsure of what to do. Well, there you guess you could guide her in a little.

"Just poke her a bit." You say.

"What?" Lucina blinks.

"Yeah, she does this all the time, so she's totally used to it. Just poke her a bit."

Lucina reluctantly reaches a hand out and softly presses her finger against Nemo's cheek. The sleepy scientist groans softly, causing Lucina to squeak in alarm and pull back.

"It didn't work!" She wails.

"Do it a few more times!" You say, trying not to burst into laughter.

Lucina cautiously pokes Nemo's cheek a few more times and the sleepy scientist's eyes finally begin to flutter open.

"Hmbalrkeja?" Nemo mutters as she wipes a bit of drool off her lip. "Oh, morning, Lucas. Morning girl I haven't seen before in my life."

Lucina blinks.

"Name!" You hiss at her.

"O-oh right! I'm Lucina - I mean- my name's Lucina!"

"Ah, the great and terrible." Nemo nods. "What brings you to my little lab today?"

"Well," You butt in, "we were wondering if you've got anything fancy and new today."

"Hmmmmm." Nemo says. "I got a new battle rifle design I need tested out, and a new development for you. Which one do you want to see first?"

"What do you have for Lucina?" You ask.

"Hmmmmm..." Nemo looks at Lucina. "I have it right here."

She then kneels down behind her work table and plops down what looked like the standard Gallian battle rifle, but it looked... different somehow.

"I call it the Enhanced Battle Rifle." Nemo says, motioning to the weapon. "At it's very core, it's still the same weapon, but with a few improvements, mostly in the weight and size so it's easier to carry and handle in close quarters."

"Really?" Lucina looks at it, now with some genuine interest.

"I shortened the barrel by four inches, added in an adjustable stock, and the whole thing is made out of a special lightweight aircraft alloy I've been working on." Nemo drones on.

"Brilliant as always, Nemo." You grin. Nemo then hands off the rifle to Lucina, who immediately starts scrutinizing every square inch of it.

"It feels off." Lucina frowns.

"That's just because it weighs less than it looks." Nemo points out. "Give it at try and see how you like it."

"Okay." Lucina nods as she starts fiddling with the telescoping stock.

"And as for you," Nemo leads you to the back of the tent. "I've got a bit of a surprise."

Well, rather than a gun, as you were expecting, you see... a backpack, which was a bit odd.

"A backpack? I don't think we need much development on those." You say.

"Not just a backpack." Nemo shakes her head. "An assault pack. Rather than having to deal with having to constantly reload boxes of ammo, you can store it all in this pack and it will feed directly into your gun. No reloading required, well, until you run it dry, of course."

"Huh, that's interesting." You agree. "Any drawbacks?"

"Well, it redistributes the weight from around your chest all to your back. Plus it'll be a bit tougher to fit into close quarters." Nemo shrugs. "But whether you want to use it is up to you."

"Get down!" Lucina yells as she slides across the table and tackles both you and Nemo to the ground.

At that moment, a mortar or artillery round lands several meters outside of the tent, shredding one side with shrapnel and showering the area with dirt.

"What the hell was that?!?" You yell.

"88mm mortar shell." Nemo says without missing a beat.

It's then that you notice you are sandwiched between Nemo and Lucina. You thank the many gods out there that the two girls involved were probably the only two in this base who wouldn't make a big issue out of it.

"Hey, Lucina, you think you could..."

"Yeah, sorry." Lucina rolls off you and gets into kneeling position with her new rifle at the ready. You grab your M60 and start loading your ammo belt into it.

"Nemo, you stay here and stay in cover, got that?" You say.

"Roger that." Nemo says as she straightens out her shirt.

"Lucas, we need to get out of here and figure out what's going on." Lucina says.

As she says this, you can hear more explosions and more mortar shells were falling into the base. You could also hear screaming and yell and warning sirens blaring. That could only mean one thing. The Bastion was under attack.

The both of you manage to cross the distance relatively unscathed. Though scary, the mortar fire was actually rather inaccurate. While a good deal were falling inside the base, you see much more going off target and landing outside the walls. Lucina also seemed to have a sense of where the shells would be landing and quickly directed you to the safest spots to head towards. Within a few minutes, you finally reach the command post, which is a flurry of activity. There, you can see Simo and Menendez trying to organize the chaos.

"Simo, what's going on?!" You ask.

"We don't know, but I'll bet money it's an Erusean attack." Simo scowls. "Air support is already inbound, but we've got no idea what's coming our way."

"Counter battery fire is already starting." Menedez says as you can hear several loud BOOMS coming from the north end of the base as the heavy artillery pieces you brought begin to respond to the shelling. You also see Trombe barreling through the barrage, the rest of Wraith Team piles out.

"Okay, since we're all here." Simo waves you all forward. "Priority is securing this area!"

"We need to evacuate the villagers!" You say.

"Are you serious?" Edwin shakes his head. "What good will that do us?"

"Don't tell me you can just stand by and let innocent people get hurt when you can do something about it!" You yell back.

Edwin is about to retort when Simo cuts him off.

"Lucas has got a point. We need local support here if we want to minimize rebel activity." Simo says. "Saving a village will go a long ways toward that."

"Alright, you guys need a ride to the west gate? I'm ready to go!" Runaround says.

Thanks to Trombe, you get to the west gate in under thirty seconds. Once you reach the gate, you poke your head out of one of the observation ports and grimace when you see Dorado. The village hadn't gotten out of the bombardment unscathed, either, and you can see some buildings burning or wrecked. You can see villagers already fleeing up the hill towards the base.

"Sir, what do we do about the villagers!" One of the gate guards asks.

"Let them in! But make sure you keep them in a secure area!" Simo yells as Trombe zooms through the gate.

"Okay, we need to secure the village and the evacuation route!" Simo says to the assembled squad. "We're going to have to split into two teams for this!"

Simo quickly organizes you into two teams. You, Bragg, Simo, Morgan, Edwin, Sparky, and Runaround in Trombe would hold position on top of the hill in order to provide covering fire. Charlotte, MK, Falynn, and Lucina would proceed into Dorado to clear all the houses and make sure everybody is evacuated.

"We're moving in." Lucina says, waving for her team to follow her down the hill."

Well, now you've got a choice to decide where to point your gun.

Machine gun + fleeing villagers = WAR CRIMES

Morgan's better suited for that.

If the other team needs cover, the snipers are better for that, we're much more suited for covering an open road than an urban assault team.

It'd be a slaughter if the evac team is cut off. Let's make sure that area's kept clear.
>>
>>27856040
You keep an eye on the treeline running parallel to the road. The engineers made sure to slash and burn most of the trees in the area to provide better line of sight, but the tradeoff was a lot less cover, which was no problem if you were sitting behind a concrete wall, but sort of a problem if you only had a shallow road embankment to hide behind.

Regardless, you go prone and set up your M60 to sweep the treeline if needed. Bragg sets up his .50 while Simo and Morgan line up their rifles to overwatch the village. Edwin and Sparky are busy pulling crates of spare lance tips out of Trombe and are in a minor bickering over where to place them.

Meanwhile, the village team is busy clearing out the buildings and directing everybody to make a run for the Bastion.

"Dead sure. Leaves don't move like that." Bragg says grimly. "Simo?"

"I can't see what you're seeing, Bragg, but I trust you to fire at your discretion." Simo says, still keeping his rifle steady.

"It might be Eruseans setting up for a shot on us. These civvies out here are sitting ducks if that happen." Bragg says.

"And it could just be a boar or worse, more civvies that went into the jungle instead." You warn. "And if we start shooting I can guarantee you it will cause a panic."

And then that's when it happens. Suddenly a storm of MG fire lances out from the jungle, pinging off the Trombe's hull and sending villagers screaming and diving for cover.

"Shit!" Bragg yells and he starts to return fire. "I freaking told you, man!"

Even worse, the MG fire was just the harbinger of what was to come. You could see armored vehicles, at least three, break the treeline with at least three squads of supporting infantry flanking them, in addition to the MG teams trying to keep you suppressed.

"Goddamn, it's a whole damn army of them!" Bragg screams.

You mentally recall what you've got available. There's Runaround in Trombe, with an autocannon and disposable lance launchers, Edwin and Sparky, who could use either armor piercing or antipersonnel lances, and you and Bragg, who have your MGs.

Between your M60 and Bragg's .50 cal, you wreak terrible destruction among the advancing infantry, and you see a few soldiers literally getting ripped to pieces as they advance. Two squads immediately drop to the ground, clinging to what little cover they can find, but one squad presses on, either ignoring or not noticing their fellows are lagging behind.

On the anti-vehicle front, Edwin manages to plant a lance straight into the front driver's port of one the Bears, causing the entire vehicle to explode and scattering the infantry even further. Unfortunately, Sparky's lance glances off the second Bear's angled front armor.

Finally, Runaround lets loose with Trombe's weapons. His first lance blows off the third Bear's turret, and a cannon volley finishes it off.

The advancing infantry squad and the last Bear continue their advance despite the punishing casualties, firing as they come.

You feel a bullet slam into your shoulder pad and deflect off. You wince but try to set aside the pain, glad that you're prone so it wouldn't interrupt your aim. You see Edwin take a hit as well, but he shrugs it off as he quickly starts to load a fresh lance.

However, you see a lance spiral out from the jungle and slam in to the front of the Trombe.

"Runaround! Are you okay!?" You ask.

"Yeah! Fuck!" Runaround curses. "That was too damn close!"

Indeed, you can see the cracked and slagged armor where the lance hit. If the lance had been just a little more to the right, it would have had a direct hit on the driver's compartment.

Fortunately, the two pinned squads keep their heads down as you and Bragg continue your suppressive fire. However, the third squad seems to actually start moving FASTER, as if emboldened or angered at your attempts to stop them.

However, they quickly lose their armored support thanks to Edwin, who manages to use his elevated position to his advantage and shoot a lance down onto the last Bear's top armor, blowing its engine compartment apart.

Without the Bear to support them, the advancing Erusean squad is cut to ribbons, but a few of them are left and you grimace when you see that they've got bayonets attached.

"Shit I need to reload!" Bragg curses.

You know that Edwin and Sparky need to reload too, and this close in, Runaround can't risk shooting at them either. You've got not choice and stand up...

You wince in pain but manage to stop short of screaming or crying out. Honestly, you've probably suffered worse in training. However, unlike Auntie Tarin, this Erusean was just going to keep stabbing you once you were down. With a twist of your body, you bring your heavy M60 around and swing at the Erusean. It doesn't connect, but it forces the Erusean to back away and he grabs your gun to keep you from being able to bring it into line with him. The act of dropping your gun is enough to surprise the Erusean, giving you the opening you need. You swing your head forward, slamming it into the Erusean's and sending him falling back. Shaking the stars from your vision, you then pull out your pistol and pump several shots into him. You turn to Bragg just in time for you to see him pick up his .50 from its tripod and swing it like a club at the Erusean with predictable results. Even though Bragg's position was a good handful of meters away from you, you could very clearly hear the sicking CRUNCH and metal met bone, and bone lost rather badly.

And then the adrenaline wears off and you become acutely aware of your stab wound. You wince and fall to your knees, scrambling for your ragnaid. Edwin and Sparky rush to your side to see if you need assistance.

"I'm good." You say, getting up and picking up your dropped M60. You can hear the booming of Bragg's .50 cal as he sets his MG back down and pumps more rounds at the Eruseans hiding out in the jungle.

It's also now that your realize you can hear Simo and Morgan's rifles going off. That could only mean-

"Simo, what's going on in the village?!" You yell.

"The village is crawling with Erusean infantry." Simo says without pulling away from his rifle. "Lucina's team is still fine, but they're swarming everywhere and they're going to get surrounded if they don't get out."

"Why aren't they getting out?" You ask.

We actually haven't had the time to reconfigure it to a more assault friendly configuration.

Come to think of it, is Simo toting the ATR-3?

APC's, RPG's and tight streets don't mix at all. Best we keep him back on the hill where we can provide a good field of fire.

"Let's not send Runaround in." You say. "I don't think vehicles and urban combat mix."

"Yeah, that's what I was thinking." Simo says. "If you want to help, you remember that brick building Arguello set up shop in? Lucina and the others are in that general area. They're trying to get inside, but the Eruseans have them pinned down. Some support fire would be appreciated.

"Got it." You say, squinting through your red dot sight. You focus in on the lone brick building in the center of the village, and sure enough, you can see tracers zipping about as small little figures trade fire with one another. The distance was pretty far, but the point was to suppress the enemy, not necessarily kill them...

DAKKN

You unleash a sustained burst of fire into the buildings west of Arguello's residence, hopefully taking some Eruseans out and keeping their heads down.

"Lucina, how's the situation?" You say as you let off the trigger a bit to let your barrel cool.

"No good, there's still too much fire coming our way." Lucina responds over the radio.

"Lucina, whatever you do, do it fast." Simo warns. "The Eruseans are coming around the northern flank. Me and Morgan are trying to keep them pinned, but you're likely going to be surrounded in three minutes."

"Go for it, Lucina! Get Arguello out of there!" You yell. "We'll cover you!"

"Roger that. We're breaching."

You then see a brief flash and a large smoke cloud as presumably Falynn blows a hole in the wall to gain entry into the building. You see a flurry of activity in the west part of town.

"Oh no, they realize something's up." Morgan says, firing her GSR-TAC as fast as she can manage. "They're trying to assault the building!"

You swing your gun into position and fire.

You spray the entire area with MG fire, but he Eruseans still seem very determined to push through the village, despite the horrid casualties you must be inflicting on them.

"We've secured Arguello! We're falling back!" Lucina reports.

You then see four figures burst out from the now crumbling brick building and sprinting in your direction.

Unfortunately, you're so focused on the western half of the village, you forget about the flanking force in the north. You shift your aim back to the north and end and realize both forces are about to run straight into each other.

"Lucina! Watch out! You're going to run straight into the Erusean flanking force!" Simo yells.

You unleash a burst at the flanking force, but it's too little too late. You see muzzle flashes and tracer fire as both sides exchange fire.

"Shit shit shit shit!" You hear Charlotte cursing over the radio. "Lucina's hit and... and..."

"Charlotte, what's happening?" You yell. You're afraid Charlotte might have been hit too, which was why she was stammering.

"MK and Falynn are down. I repeat, Falynn and MK are down!" You hear Charlotte forcing the words, nearly on the verge of tears. "I-I can't reach them! They're on the north side of the street and they got us pinned!"

"Charlotte, get Lucina and get the hell out of there!" Simo yells.

"But-"

"THAT'S AND ORDER." Simo yells.

However, it seems like all the sound around you has gotten dull. The only thing you could focus on was the fact that Falynn was down there.

Falynn was down there.

Falynn was down.

That ugly, boiling feeling you had successfully kept suppressed was starting to assert itself again, but you try to force it down. You needed to be calm. You needed a plan.

"Runaround, get your ass over here! We're going in to get them out!" You yell.

"U-um, roger?" Runaround says, a bit unsure.

"Lucas, I know how you feel about Falynn and MK, but I can't let you go on a suicide mission to rescue them, and I can't very well let you drag Runaround into it!" Simo says, standing up to confront you.

"Well sir, I'm going down there regardless of what you say. If you want to stop me, you're going to have to shoot me." You scowl.

"Damnit, Lucas..." Simo reaches for his pistol You guess he really was willing to shoot you.

Well, time to break out the big words.

"If it were Morgan down there, what would you have done?"

"Fuck. FUCK!" Simo spits taking his hand off the pistol. "Fine, go, but promise you get EVERYBODY out alive, including yourself! You got it? Or I'll fucking kill you myself!"

"Roger that." You say, hopping into Trombe's rear hatch. "Runaround let's go!"

"I got a bad feeling about this." Runaround frowns.

But you almost don't even hear him. You're to concerned about other things.

"Don't worry Falynn, I'm coming." You say to nobody in particular.

And in so many ways, too. We could lose the two of them to blood loss or one or both could come out of this with an amputated limb. Depending on where they were shot, what type of bullet went through, entry and exit wounds, we could be looking at a critical time to patch them up as long as a few hours or as short as one or three minutes.

And our rescue effort will be completely fucked over if a lance scores a lucky shot, anyhow.
