Sorry about last week, guys. For some reason, I got a ban from /m/ or something while discussing which Driver I'd like to buyfag the most, and of course that fucked up my plans for the quest, and then that whole posting fiasco...and then by the time I was UN-banned, saturday was gone and I was playing Pokemon X- which, by the way, is fucking fantastic. I actually want Y, too. (It's not often I want both versions in a gen- almost never, actually.)

Now, on to Digimon.

The twitter is at: https://twitter.com/DigimonQuest
The archive is here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Digimon%20Quest
The stat sheets are here: http://pastebin.com/u/DigimonQuest
The Storybook is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vIIWBQ-sHlw3PZ4D4yH9hiIl8YiqEVpy1ZUztKlSzzs

Now then- CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER:
[] Wayne Rogers
>Partner: Sally

[] Niklas Bylund
>Partner: Kokuwamon

[] Daniil Kravec
>Partner: Impmon
>>
>>27828718
Let's try Daniil this time.

Though it might be a good idea to remind everyone where we were when we left off with these characters.
>>
>>27828780
An Excellent suggestion.

>Wayne
Last time we saw Wayne, he, Sally, Zoe and Aslan were on the winding staircase to Olympus that seemd to go on forever! However, right before we cut away to Niklas, he saw the light shining through the clouds that told him Olympus was just moments away!

>Niklas and Daniil
Last we saw of Niklas, he was questioning a formerly confrontational and rather creative digimon as to why it had thrown spears at him before. Meanwhile, Daniil had suffered some sort of instinctual rage that sent him flying at the first digimon they saw in the wasteland they found themselves in! What could it all mean?
>>
>>27828827
Maybe a brief one sentence summary of their personalities as well?
>>

I did make these for a reason...
>>
>>27828827
Yeah let's try Daniil for now, finish the set.
>>
>>27829010
>>27828928
that was meant to link here. Damnit.

Alright, three playable character summaries.

>Wayne
A charismatic kid with good luck and a thing for greek mythology; can't decide if he wants to be really good friends with his partner or REALLY good friends.

>Niklas
the wierd kid with bad luck and issues he doesn't like talking about; you don't know that much about him, really, but with time, you'd discover it all.

>Daniil
He's your Kuwabara, only he tries to be much friendlier; it doesn't work very often.

>>27829056
>>27828780
two votes for Daniil. Any more?
>>
>>27829097
Sure, that works for me.
>>
>>27829429
>I had to go back to the last thread to get the dialogue right. god all those point of view changes. I am shame.

You are Daniil Kravec.

And right now, you'd give just about anything for a roll of duct tape.

This Digimon- god only knows what it's called- just won't shut up. It's babbling and yammering and you can't make out half of what it's saying and god DAMNIT it's annoying. You know you sort of asked for it by joining in on the questioning...

But Niklas, your only (human) friend, seems intent to hear it out. If he's willing to, then you guess you ought to, as well.

"..The Dead Zones! You don't want to die in a Dead Zone!"

Wait. Wait, that sounds important.

"What was that?" You cut in, all annoyance forgotten. The Digimon looks utterly terrified of you (you have some inkling as to why) but answers nevertheless.

"The Dead Zones! They're everywhere! The things in them just suddenly died, and if anything else dies while inside the borders of one, I've heard they don't come back!"

>[] w-what the fuck is that supposed to mean?

>[].. Come back?

>>
>>27829830
"What do you mean come back? Digimon normally do that?"
>>
>>27829830
>[x] w-what the fuck is that supposed to mean?
What a terrible story.
>>
>>27829861
>>27830039

"...Come back? Digimon can do that?" Niklas looks as shocked as you feel, as do-

As do your Digimon partners.

Before you can say anything else, however, Impmon stomps over to the strange cat-like Digimon and grabs it by the fur on its chest, shoving his face close to the other creatures menacingly.

"You're sayin' that if ya die here, then that's it?" His voice is low and even- exactly like when he fought with the Fuugamon at your school. The Digimon nods, and your partner just SNARLS at him. "And you were tryin' ta kill US?! Well-" He proceeds to launch into surprisingly impeccable Russian, hurling insults that you sadly recognize as ones you've used in his presence before at the blue furball.

...Wow. He really WAS listening to everything you said. You're a bit flattered.

Niklas is giving you a reproachful look, maybe because you're letting this go on too long. Or maybe because your partner's picked up your vocabulary.

Maybe both.

>[] That's enough, let the guy breathe

>[] Maybe this'll learn 'im

>[] Other?

>That's enough, let the guy breathe

"Easy, easy."

Step in if it looks like he's going to use physical violence, but otherwise whatever.
>>

Eh I guess a halfhearted attempt should be good.

But we should also ask that other thing what the big idea was.

Okay, maybe he's going a bit too far. And MAYBE Niklas is right.

"Easy, buddy," You place a hand on your partner's shoulder, getting a bit of a glare from him. "Yeah, I know; he went and fucked up. That doesn't mean we can traumatize him just yet." Impmon seems to consider the "Yet," and after a moment, relents, releasing the poor Digimon and stepping back, grumbling to himself the entire way. Niklas just shakes his head, while Kokuwamon looks confused at the goings on. The guy probably doesn't know what the hell was just said- but then again, he's a robot beatle. You haven't got any idea what's going on in HIS head, either.

Turning back to the blue Digimon, you

As you step back to allow Niklas to resume his questioning, you notice the Digimon's eyes flit from you to him, and a small smirk creep its way onto its face.

"Now, can you explain to us why you threw those spears, and what you were talking about with this "coming back" business?" Niklas asks. The creature merely shrugs, that same grin on his face.

"I dunno- why would I do that? Why would I tell you that, anyway?"

Holy shit.

This little fucker thinks that he'll can take advantage of your friend's kinder nature now that you're not allowing your partner to threaten him.

You knew people like that before you moved.

Putting on your worst game face and crossing your arms over your chest, you level a glare far more potent than the one your partner was using on the little blue carpet. The effect is instantaneous: all bravado and smugness just fall from his face, and he graciously reconsiders.

"ALRIGHT, Alright- word's been put out: Two things that look like digimon but aren't, with two digimon with them, apparently here to fix things. An'-...and if we can take them off, and offer proof, there's a reward."

Niklas just looks at you. You just look at him.

You're fairly certain the only thing you're both thinking is how the fuck you got into this mess.

Why is this quest still running?

It hasn't changed one bit from harem quest except for introducing multiple protags which makes the issues this thing has even worse.

Nobody has an actual personality or development
There is no overarching plot and even less any sideplots
The writing is mediocre
The extremely forgiving roll "system" not only makes things terribly unexciting but also fucks over any enjoyment that might come out of a 20
Things are moving at a snails pace at best and its not looking like it will get any better
>>
>>27833284
Then, please, offer advice, not just criticism.

I'll gladly do my best to improve, but without trial and error, nothing's going to change, and without some help, it won't be what you want. I'm not gonna get upset if you point out what's wrong with this, and if I have some sort of input ot advice on how I can get better, I'll take it.

I never advertised myself as a genius or master of my craft, and I'm not advertising the quest as anything it isn't. I'm just here to have fun along with those of us who want to join in. That means if I can work to make it more fun for you, then by all means, allow me to.

Help me help you have a good time, anon.

>>
>>27833566

>>
>>27833633
Actually, yeah...
Could we maybe get some ideas of what Luck can do for us, when it comes to rolling?
I think that could be a way to really change how the roll system works.
>>
>>27833566

In regards to dice, I will make one suggestion.

Bell Curve Probability.

If you want more midranged numbers, use multiple dice. It gives a slightly lower range, but more results closer to the median.

This means that Crits are even less likely than they are with straight probablity. for example with 1d100 you have a 1/100 chance of getting a 100, but with 2d50, you have a 1/2500 chance of getting the 100.

Once again, this only helps if you want rolls to be closer to the median. But it does mean that you could expand the Crit range slightly, or leave Crits to be even more special....

All in all, the roll system is entirely your call...

Though >>27833587 Does sound like an interesting, yet logistical nightmare, idea for it... assuming you don't mind effectively running 3+ systems...

The more you roll, the likelier it is that a result won't be completely horrible.

I don't think you understand just how many possibilities that digimon have for evolutions.

Like Impmon can become pretty much any Adult-level demon, and Kokuwamon can do the same for both insects and bugs.
>>
>>27833777
Well yes, but there's a certain 'breadth' that they can access right now.
It's not like it'd make much sense for them all to be able to become anything - at least not narratively.
>>
>>27833587
>>27833633
Luck is actually rather abstract, and it's more or less that tip in the scales- not quite deus-ex-machina, and not QM fiat.

I may eventually retire it, but I like to think of it as an unpredictable element in the story; something even I can't control, and yet we can have a bit of fun with.

Good to see this quest started up again, I started following in the previous thread, read through the archives, and it seemed like there might not be more.

On a related note, this quest has made me want to watch digimon again, but I've only seen the first series adn a bit of the second, it seems like there's heaps now, any kind souls here who could recommend which order the various series and movies should be watched in?
>>
>>27833433
Touché, that barely came up and disappeared again though.

>>27833447
Seventeen threads and its barely starting out?

Describe any character in this quest WITHOUT saying what they looked like or what their profession or role in the quest is. Describe this character to your friends like they ain't never seen Digimon.

The only character with a shred of a personality was Aslan when this thing started out, since he was a overly protective dickwad, which worked perfectly well, but he got pretty much shafted.

>>27833529
Gale is picking out the best rolls whenever he feels like it and saves up 20s, this terrible for the following reasons:
You don't have to be afraid to fail since the system by design is trying to circumvent exactly that, which also means the characters never or very rarely fail, making the whole "choice and consequence" thing non existent.
Further 20s or generally high rolls aren't an exception, but pretty the standart, which in turn means there is no reason to be happy or excited about that, since it always happens.

>>27833432
First Give your characters actual personality by giving them motivations, goals, fears, issues, quirks, beliefs (And I am not talking about religious ones) and actual development.

Wayne for example went into the digital world for little more than shits and giggles.
That doesn't work if you don't make it look like he wants actual escapism, wherever from a terribly boring and dull life or anything else.
Logical conclusion to such a character would to make him appreciate what he had, finding out that fighting for life actually isn't very fun nor is seeing your friends getting hurt.

Also a overarching plot is missing, the only thing that got mentioned is the dark zones but thats it.
Things like "reality is fucking up because x" need to be introduced early on and become more urgent as things come into the protagonists reach while he needs to have an actual motivation why he's doing it, fame, friends whatever.
>>
>>27833979
All of the seasons are independent from each other and often take place in entirely different universes.

Tamers is generally agreed upon as the best season, although the start is slow and awkward, and things only really get rolling after the first half

Adventure is second, which starts off well but without any mindblowing climaxes and trucks through a steady pace on and on.

Adventure 02 is downright terrible as an adult and most of the other seasons are mediocre compared to Adventure and Tamers.

Start off there and see if you want to go on.

Also don't watch the English dub, its really bad
>>

>Complaining about lack of personality when the one character we've had for the most part has been /tg/'s will, and the other two we just now started using actually do have them.
>Complaining about a lack of insight into who a character is when the situation is as above.

>>
>>27834098
>barely came up and disappeared again
Since they got introduced, Wayne's story has been about looking for clues about them, asking gods and whatnot.

Now we have another group's POV and the Dead Zones came up in their very first thread, and we're about to learn more about them.

The plot IS progressing slowly, but come on, you can't say it doesn't exist.
>>
>>27834098
Pretty much everything about you said about the characterization is wrong. It really only proves that you've read a couple of threads and felt like you understood everything about the characters from those few threads.

And seriously? You're complaining that the dice aren't hard enough? It's best of three. There's like a dozen other quests that use the same system.
>>
>>27832913
>Gonna split the original plan so that you can reply to the first part and change your questions if needed.

"Reward?" Niklas asks, and the digimon nods rapidly, backed up against the rocks as he is. You send a questioning look to Impmon, but all he can offer is a shrug in reply. Kokuwamon seems equally befuddled...not that you can tell. Niklas thinks to himself for a second, then looks back to your captive. "What was the reward? What could be worth killing four people you've never even met, and in the case of the digimon, irreversibly?"

The answer isn't one either of you expected.

"Sanctuary! What else?!" He throws a limb out, jabbing his claws at the landscape around you. "The Dead Zones are everywhere now! You can't go a day's travel without coming across one, and all we know is that they're never near any big settlements or landmarks." He looks to the both of you and your digimon, his eyes pleading with you. "You have to understand; when I said everything died, I *meant* everything. All the plants, all the trees, they withered and left us without anything to eat, and the streams dried up as soon as they reached the dead zones, so there was nothing to drink, and nobody wants immigrants from the Zones when there are too many refugees as it is!" He collapses on the dirt in front of you, and you wonder for a second if he can get any more miserable than he already is, before he mutters dejectedly, "This was my only chance to get out of here, and now it's gone."

you and Niklas share another glance, and you know he wants to comfort the guy. But you're not so sure...

>>
>>27834293
You just agreed that there was little to no characterization but excused it by saying that /tg/ had control over Wayne the most part.

>Complaining about the roll system not assraping us at every turn.

Yeah right, I can strawman too.

>>27834305
A role is protagonist, villain, anti hero, comedic relief and the sort.

Sally being sadistic and going waifu on Wayne doesn't giver her a character if she doesn't have anything behind that.

Just do:

>Describe any character in this quest WITHOUT saying what they looked like or what their profession or role in the quest is. Describe this character to your friends like they ain't never seen Digimon.

>>27834310
Can't disagree with you because this whole thing is going on, so you're right.

>>27834404
The only character I described was Aslan and you gotta prove it wrong, also I am reading this quest along since it started, you can tell yourself the different if you have to.

>And seriously? You're complaining that the dice aren't hard enough?
Overwhelming lenience never did any good and an adventure means jackshit without hardship.
>>
>>27834098
The reason the dice don't seem very difficult is because we've been getting very, very good rolls. With almost no failures.

See, the reason I like this quest as opposed to other quests is that fuckups happen at the worst times. And during an action or pacing sequence it grinds stories to a halt. That's why we can save 20s here, because we already know we have plot armor, it's Digimon. Not D&D. So having a reserve of good rolls keeps characters from dying because the dice gods decided they were angsty that day.

Also I don't think anything you said about the plot is true at all. It was pretty clearly explained to us what the overall plot is, we just don't know how to go about solving it or what is causing it.

You're acting as if Gale should just hand us the keys and the clues to solving the entire puzzle of the story. When he expects us to explore and find the cause and solution.

Unless you really don't know much about how the story is laid out and you've really joined this quest fairly recently. Because I find it difficult to believe that you think that about the characters, that they have no motivation, or reason to be there.
>>

Now you're getting rude. Great job.

>Sally being sadistic and going waifu on Wayne doesn't giver her a character if she doesn't have anything behind that.

Okay so we should just pigeonhole characters into roles instead of letting them be their own character.

>>Describe any character in this quest WITHOUT saying what they looked like or what their profession or role in the quest is

You are not RedLetterMedia, this isn't Star Wars, it's an interactive story told from the second person. That entire test breaks down when it's not being observed in the third person.

>The only character I described was Aslan and you gotta prove it wrong

no no, YOU got to prove that his character is weak, you're the one making the supposition. Not say "Well Wayne doesn't have any reason to be there so his character sucks" and hope that no one catches onto your little ruse.

Wayne is there because he genuinely wants to help Sally and fix the imbalance between his world and the Digital world.

Oh you didn't read that thread? Yeah the real world is being affected by this too. Maybe you should go archive trawling and report back when you're a bit more educated on this quest.
>>
>>27834545
[x] "If everything is gone, why are you certain that you would have got sanctuary in the first place? Where could you go to hide from this?"
>>
>>27834551
>Yeah right, I can strawman too.

We COULD just ignore you because you clearly just want to troll instead of be genuinely helpful.

>Overwhelming lenience never did any good and an adventure means jackshit without hardship.

So what you're saying is: You want the quest to be at the level of difficulty for you.

Also "No Hardship"? Have you really read more than one or two threads? We fuck up all the time. Wayne is a lobster because of our pathetic roll luck.
>>
>>27834564
>The reason the dice don't seem very difficult is because we've been getting very, very good rolls.
Well, actually we tend to ask Gale to take into account any 20 we roll even if it's not one of the first three rolls, so the guy has a point. Kind of.

Then again we've also been extremely lucky concerning 1 rolls, too. We've rolled far more 20s than 1s for some reason.
>>
>>27834738
>Well, actually we tend to ask Gale to take into account any 20 we roll even if it's not one of the first three rolls

And he typically stores them. I'm perfectly fine with storing 20s.

Which is Gale's call, I think storing 20's is a good idea. It's really that guy wants the quest to be at his difficulty with his mechanics. Which is just tough because it's not his quest.

Something that conveys the sentiment of

"And instead of helping the people who were sent to save the world, you know, us, you decided it was a better idea to kill us because some jackass promised safety.

Even though the kind of person who wants to assassinate people sent to save the world KIND of seems like the kind of guy who kills minions when they stop being useful, instead of giving them fabulous prizes."

Also Gale, if it's possible, speeding up could be neat.

responses?

And I'd also like to take the time to say that I have taken the criticism and advice into consideration, and there are points that have been put out there that I do agree with.

Wayne for example, isn't as developed or even three dimensional as I'd like. I'm making efforts to correct this, and next time you play as him, I hope you'll see the result of this. Nothing completely character breaking, but I'd like to at least make him out to be more than he has been.

Sally's characterization has been planned from the start, and is something you should look forward to...I-If you want, I guess.
>>
>>27834899
Now quick question gale

You're not trying to write these in the 4chan reply box, are you?
>>
>>27834922
Only a few of them, when I do have a concrete idea of what will happen next in mind.
>>
>>27834899
Gale, don't take the advice of someone who does drive-by criticism. He has a few points but it's weighed down by all the incorrect assumptions he made because it's clear he doesn't want to or have any desire to follow this quest.

Keep going as you are, just keep characterization in mind. No one expects the players to know 100% how the characters think and act when it's being told in small updates from a second person narrative and it's foolish of him to want that.
>>
>>27834985
sometimes, it's not just the players, but I myself will have no idea how the character should be acting or reacting or thinking, and knowing how the character would go about the suggestions from the players in their own way is a big part of this.

It's that I agree with everything he's said, but some of his points do overlap with my own concerns, and it's given me an excuse to finally fix this.

Now then, will we be using >>27834794 and >>27834660 for this next post?
>>

And one thing that might be helpful is to write flashbacks showing how Nicklas and Daniil interacted with their digimon partners, each other, etc.

Like figure out how they tick, and what exactly the relationship between them and their digimon is, since it's very different from... you know, what Wayne's got going on.
>>
>>27835206

This will eventually be a thing. I can promise that.

"Wait, wait," you say, and hold up a hand, the other going to your forehead. "What made you think there'd be any sanctuary in the first place, if everything's dead or gone? Where could you go to hide from all this?" You gesture to the wastelands around you, and the Digimon perks up a bit at your question.

"I-I'd be going to the city, of course- that's where almost all of us who could went when the dead zones took our homes." His voice seems full of reverence, but for what, you don't know. Niklas just shakes his head in confusion.

"But...who would offer a reward for US? Why would anyone want the ones sent to fix this dead?" He asks, and the digimon laughs nervously.

"Fix this? Yeah, that's real funny. I'd love to see you do that. Really." He looks between the two of us, and something seems to dawn on him. "...You don't know. You don't know anything." He puts his claws to his head in some gesture of surprise, then drops them to his sides and sighs.

"you wanna hear something that'll save you a lot of effort and cryin'? It's been tried. all of it. They’ve all tried. The Sovereigns? They tried. The jerks on their mountain? a few of them tried, the rest just took one look at this mess and told us it was our problem. The Devas lost a few guys trying to fix this. The Knights? Where the hell are they? Nobody’s got any idea. The only ones still tryin’ are those four hermits, and a fat load of good that’s doing anyone. The most anyone can do now is just try to stay alive. The City’s our best bet of doin’ that, because for some reason, none of the dead zones got anywhere near it. And whoever’s in charge, he’s sayin’ he’ll take anyone in. But just gettin’ in don’t get ya anything- you’re just as shit outa luck in there as you are in here- only in there you just get to starve longer. So when we hear that if we take you out, we’ll be provided for...who the hell wouldn’t take that up?” He sighs, and it’s a shuddering breath that tells you he’s likely on the verge of tears. “And here I went and fucked up.”

...Well… You look to your friends to see what they think- first to Impmon, who looks like he’s only barely holding something back, but whether it’s an outburst or an attack, you don’t know, then to Niklas, who is CLEARLY eating the sob story up- hell, he’s devouring it. Kokuwamon’s looking as impassive as ever. You don’t get that guy.

...Something's still bugging you, however.

"Who's in charge of these...safe zones? And who told you about the reward?" You ask, earning you a reproachful look from Niklas. Yeah, well, the bleeding heart can wait until you know who's put a fucking hit out on you- or hell, out on Rogers and his friend, for that matter. Your captive hesitates to answer, but once you start tapping your foot, he catches on and spills some more.

"The guy in charge is a- an Ultimate, or so we hear. Nobody gets a look at him that often, but we know he calls himself The Don....whatever kind of name that is. He offers anyone who enters the city his protection, so long as they accept him as their leader, but he doesn't have the resources to really take CARE of everyone, so he has to settle for protecting us until he gets supplies from...wherever he gets supplies from." The Digimon rubs one arm in a nervous gesture, apparently uncomfortable with this. You can sort of sympathize- this Don guy seems like an alright person...if he hadn't told everyone in his city to kill you and your friends.
>>
>>27847209
You decide to change the subject to something else that caught your interest during his rant earlier.

"And these 'Hermits?' Who are they, and why are they still trying to save this place when nobody else is, according to you?" At this, the Digimon just shrugs.

"I dunno, I never met 'em. Word is that they're tryin' ta find something from an old story that'll fix this clusterfuck, but it's just a pipe dream. They've got their hearts in the right place, I guess, but that's grasping at straws as much as anyone else, really. "

Niklas seems deep in thought while all of this is going on, before suddenly speaking up.

"D-do you think you could take us to the City, or the Hermits?" He seems a lot more earnest than normal; he must want to meet these Digimon more than you'd have thought.

The Digimon seems thoughtful, as if weighing his options.

"I...COULD take you to one of them, or at least point you in the right direction..." He finally says, and you hear Impmon growl out another muffled curse under his breath behind you.

>[] Take us to your leader

>[] Help us, Hermits; you're our only hope!

It's not...really a question, is it? Is it?

You mean, Niklas isn't actually suggesting you head to the city, right?

'Ultimate' sounds like it'd be a bit too much for the four of you to take on right now, after all.

"Where did you last hear the Hermits were?" You ask, and the blue digimon hums, obviously wracking his memory. Perhaps it'd be easier if you had a map of some kind-

Oh, wait, you do. Pulling out your Digivice, you flip it open and turn on the map function, before turning it to face the digimon you're questioning. "Perhaps this will help?"

After staring at the (mostly blank) map for a few seconds, the digimon nods, and points off.... to the east.

"It was somewhere around that way, last I heard. They're always moving, but word is they stop frequently to help out whoever they can. Not that they can do much besides beat up anyone causing trouble." He grouses, and sits back against the rock. "Can I go now?"

You share a look with your friends: Niklas seems thoughtful, Impmon's still scowling at the blue digimon, and Kokuwamon just shrugs. The Goblin-like digimon from earlier's snuck off in all the confusion it seems, but you'd probably be able to find him again if you tried.
